| Concert Buddie | Making + Collecting Music on Vinyl: Talking with Mark Anthony K of Projekt Gemineye | 06 Dec 2023 | 00:56:53 | |
Grab your guitar cases, Buddies! We have a bonafide musician on the pod today. For this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts, we chat with Mark Anthony K of Projekt Gemineye. The only thing matched by his love of music (and collecting it) is making his own music via his band Projekt Gemineye. We talk about the origins of the project, and how he finds the inspiration to create new music. His output is quite prolific, as evidenced by a glance at his Bandcamp page. Why is it important his music is made on vinyl? Who creates the splendid artwork for these albums? What other projects can we look forward to on his label Reficul Records? Will Projekt Gemineye hit the road in 2024? Answers to these questions (and MORE) coming up here on Vinyl Community Podcasts!

| Concert Buddie | Behind the Music: Cicely Balston of AIR Studios | 29 Nov 2023 | 00:44:05 | |
New treat for you Buddies on this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts. On our 100th episode of VCP, we feature a conversation taking us behind the music: specifically, I'm speaking with Cicely Balston of AIR Studios in London. Earlier this year Cicely was awarded the 2023 Music Producer's Guild "Mastering Engineer of The Year" honor - and for good reason! With over a decade in the field, she began to develop her trade back in 2013 at Gearbox Records, an all-analog shop known for cutting on a vintage Skully lathe. She moved on to AIR Studios in 2016, with a detour at Alchemy Mastering (later acquired by AIR) in between her return to Sir George Martin's enterprise in 2020. She's been involved in some terrific releases of late courtesy of Vinyl Me Please, including the exciting recent release of Chalino Sanchez' "15 Exitos 15". She's been part of working on projects from artists like David Bowie, to Young MC, Busta Rhymes, Witch Fever, Sun Ra and a litany of artists across many genres and styles. We touch on that, as well as navigating mastering from digital files and analog both for today's hungry vinyl consumers. As the "vinyl resurgence" continues to go full speed ahead, the mastering side of things is in great hands with Cicely and other mastering engineers taking the baton from their predecessors. This episode has it all: science, music, laughs, and some name dropping (mostly by me). Let's jump into this terrific conversation now on Vinyl Community Podcasts!

| Concert Buddie | The Future of Vinyl Collecting? Learning About Vintage Media Grading (VMG) | 22 Nov 2023 | 00:51:21 | |
Something different for you with this one, Buddies. For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by Chad and Drew from Vintage Media Grading (VMG). The guys were kind enough to inform and share what their business is about: namely, introducing a new way to collect vinyl into the marketplace. Taking cues from other collectible spaces like sports cards, comic books, etc., VMG offers third party grading services on vinyl records, including "slabbing", which is commonplace in those aforementioned hobbies. As VMG has been gaining awareness in the hobby, there's some natural questions that come from this new way to collect vinyl records. Listen ahead to learn more about this alternative to traditional vinyl collecting, additional services VMG offers (the "V" doesn't mean "vinyl" for a reason), and also the origins of this new company (hint: we have some fellow record collectors in our midst). All this and more on this latest installment of Vinyl Community Podcasts!

| Surface Noise (A-Side) | We Came, We Saw, We Waited for a Shipping Notification | 23 Aug 2024 | 01:08:56 | |
Coming at you on the A-Side, SURFACE NOISE is back for your weekly look at the bloodsport that is vinyl record collecting. Latest news, reviews, and escapes from the zoo documented here for all to hear. Topics for this presentation include: (1) Repeal the Seal: lots of videos of late dealing with this topic, and discovering that deadstock/long sealed records have damage (foxing/ghosting/hazing, warps, paper/label deterioration/etc) inside. Where do our panelists land on this topic and any horror stories for opening long-sealed records purchased that way? (2) Trading Up: stories or scenarios where you traded records you owned (doubles? gifts?) for upgrades/grails/more desirable pieces. Where and who did you do the trading? Did it take some "nurturing" to get the deal across the finish line? etc (3) Records our vinylists own that may surprise other people/that they wouldn't normally associate your taste(s) with All that and MORE on the latest SURFACE NOISE: A-SIDE!For more on Concert Buddie: https://www.youtube.com/@ConcertBuddie

| Concert Buddie | Mind of The Record Collector: Patrick (pbthal) | 01 Nov 2023 | 00:57:58 | |
Rip you very much, Buddies! For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by a great resource in the VC, and that is Patrick aka pbthal. More recently known as The Vinyl Archivist, Patrick is a fixture in the community, running multiple livestreams each week on his channel. We jump into learning about his start on YouTube, within the Vinyl Community, and the beginnings of his record collection. Additionally, Patrick is well known in and outside the community for his process in finding, ripping, and storing the best sounding recordings on vinyl. What started at the end of the first decade in Patrick converting analog recordings to a digital database has earned him high praise and standing in the "ripper" community. We get into that, what his process and approach to ripping albums looks like, and how that impacts the titles on wax he chases to this day. Throw in some "lighting round" questions to close out this chat, and we have the makings of another winner here on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Enjoy!

| Concert Buddie | Mind of The (Audiophile) Record Collector: Steve Westman | 25 Oct 2023 | 00:50:45 | |
Sharpen the skates, Buddies! For this latest episode on Vinyl Community Podcasts and my series "Mind of The Record Collector", I'm joined by Steve Westman. Steve runs a terrific channel on YouTube, complete with regular content and interviews with a litany of guests in the Vinyl Community. You'll regularly find Steve and his guests discussing the topics of the day in the record collecting hobby, as well as sharing information and tactics for procuring the latest new releases. Before YouTube, Steve went about sharing his passion for music and record collecting during the pandemic on several Facebook groups specific to Audiophile record collecting - buying, selling, and trading - where he remains an admin on several to this day. We also hit on Steve's early interest in collecting records, whether there's any "competition" amongst other Audiophile-branded channels in the community, and close with some patented lightning round questions led off by who Steve's "grail" guest would be. We highly encourage you to check out Steve's channel (details below), but in the meantime hear it from the man himself here on Vinyl Community Podcasts!

| Northern Revolutions | Tale of Two Record Collectors | 18 Oct 2023 | 00:48:32 | |
In this latest installment of the Vinyl Community Podcasts, our host Rob of the YouTube channel Northern Revolutions chats with Jason Arsenault. Jason has been long time viewer and comment contributor of VC videos and has recently jumped in the pool and started making his own YouTube vinyl content.
Jason and Rob have vastly different experiences in the vinyl record collecting world. While both are in their 40's, Rob has been a record collector since his teenage days in the 90's, whereas Jason is a relative newcomer catching the vinyl bug during the pandemic. As a result the have had quite different experiences with the hobby. The discussion ranges from how each got into the hobby, how buying has changed in the last 30+ years and where their collections are headed.
Rob and Jason have quite different perspectives but ultimately share the same love of the format.

Fellow Austin attendees Harry and Eddie P. drop by to add more insight into this rowdy get together. | Concert Buddie | Collecting Music Across Formats: Monie Muse | 27 Sep 2023 | 00:39:30
Set your lasers to FUN, Buddies! This latest 'sode is a conversation with a YouTube channel + creator that recently hit my radar in the past few months (silly algorithms), although she's been doing it for much longer than that. Monie Muse (Monica) has a passion for the music collects, and collects it across multiple formats besides vinyl (CD's, hello). We talk about her experience on YouTube, and what it's like to be a woman in a space often crowded by very opinionated men. From there we touch on how she sources the pieces she collects, what music fills her cup, and her focus to living intentionally with the music she does keep (ie minimalism). We bring it home with some light hearted "lightning round" questions where mischief may be in play. All this and MORE, here on the latest episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts!

| Northern Revolutions | Grace Potter: The Journey to ”Mother Road” | 25 Sep 2023 | 00:50:10 | |
Hello again everybody! For this latest installment of Vinyl Community Podcasts, host Rob of Northern Revolutions is joined by Concert Buddie (Chance) to discuss their shared affinity for the talented singer/songwriter Grace Potter. Both have been fans of her work for over a decade, and share similar paths to learning about her and following her musical journey since. Grace began her music career some time ago, most notably in the band bearing her name - Grace Potter and The Nocturnals - starting around 2005. This was the starting point for our hosts, with both discovering her music right around the same time in 2011. After several years and releases with the band, Grace forged a new direction with the release of her first solo work - "Midnight" - in 2015. A callback in several ways to artists of yesteryear, she evokes the fire of Janis Joplin, the showstopping stage chops of Tina Turner, incredible musicianship across multiple instruments, and the songwriting of some of the great rock writers of the modern era. On her latest release - "Mother Road" - we find her clearly in her own lane, with clear direction on her sound, her songs, and her music as she points her car forward into the distant horizon. What do the guys think of the new album? How do they feel about her penchant for releasing her work on vinyl? And what album/songs would they recommend to someone new to her music? Answers to these questions and more, ahead on this installment of Vinyl Community Podcasts!

| Concert Buddie | Can There Be UNITY in the Vinyl CommUNITY? | 06 Sep 2023 | 00:58:15 | |
Digging deeper on this one, Buddies. I'm joined by a fellow content creator on YouTube in the Vinyl Community, Steve (Vinyl Chef Steve). On his channel he recently dropped a video called "Keeping The UNITY in The Vinyl CommUNITY" (yes, I totally ripped off his use of capitalization for effect). Several of the thoughts and sentiments he expressed in that video were ones I've shared and thought long about, so when I heard him speak many of those shared thoughts and opinions aloud, I had to reach out and expand the conversation. We hit on many pieces within his video - why are people so critical to strangers, why people should be able to make whatever they choose on their channel without scorn or ridicule, and even share how Steve and I started out on the wrong foot over a difference of opinion only to eventually find common ground and do so with civility and kindness. It can be done, folks! Kindess is still free (I checked). Curious what other places this conversation took us? Ch-ch-ch-check it out now!

You wanted the best, you got us (again) Buddies! I'm back in the pilot's seat learning about the biggest band in the world, flanked by some of the deepest fans with the best information about the band in our Vinyl Community. Once again Dylan (The Record Spinner) and Felipe (Jazz Bum Felipe) return, joined also by co-host of the KISS FAQ Podcast, Mark Anthony K (Projekt Gemineye) as we toss around the question: which era of KISS was best - the masked or unmasked eras? No blood or fire was spit in this discussion, but some serious KISS-torians educated me in the vast differences in these parts of the band's KISS-tory. | Concert Buddie | Podcasts Unite! A Chat with ”Two Guys Talking About Records” | 30 Aug 2023 | 00:45:59
Ready for a good time, Buddies? After much debating, negotiating, and conversating, I'm joined by the great guys over at the podcast "Two Guys Talking About Records" - Jim Gleason and Steve Carlson - to talk about their collecting backgrounds, how they met, and (more importantly) what on earth possessed them to start a podcast (looks in mirror). Kidding aside, Jim (owner of Radio Wasteland Records in Midland, MI) and Steve Carlson ("The Mayor" of The Vinyl Community) have one of the best vinyl-related podcasts going, and it was fun to hear all about it! We even feature a cameo by one of the youngest record collectors in the history of the Vinyl Community (who might be related to one of our guests) to put a fun bow on a fun conversation. You can hear "Two Guys Talking About Records" on iHeart Radio, Spotify, YouTube and (soon) Apple Podcasts. Let's goooooooo! | Souldisco | Interview with Michael ”Boogaloo Shrimp” Chambers from Breakin’ | 16 Aug 2023 | 01:02:23
Hello again! We have a splendid interview for this latest trip on the dance floor. Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers is an American dancer, actor, and choreographer who gained widespread recognition for his exceptional dance skills and innovative style during the 1980s. He was a pivotal figure in the world of street dance and played a significant role in popularizing breakdancing and "popping" dance techniques. Boogaloo Shrimp's journey into the world of dance began at a young age. Growing up in Watts, Los Angeles, he was exposed to the vibrant street culture and dance scene that was flourishing in the 1980s. He found inspiration in the moves of legendary dancers like Don Campbell, Boogaloo Sam, and Popin' Pete, who were pioneers of the popping and locking dance styles. At the age of 16, Chambers shot to stardom when he landed a role in the 1984 cult classic film "Breakin'." In the film, he portrayed the character "Turbo," a highly talented and creative street dancer. Boogaloo Shrimp's performance in "Breakin'" was nothing short of mesmerizing, showcasing his unique popping and robot-like movements. His dance routines, particularly the iconic broom dance scene, became legendary and etched him into the history of dance and hip-hop culture. After the success of "Breakin'," Boogaloo Shrimp continued to showcase his dance skills in the sequel, "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo," released in 1984. The film further solidified his status as a dance icon, and he remained a prominent figure in the dance community throughout the 1980s. In addition to his work in film, Boogaloo Shrimp collaborated with other influential dancers and choreographers, such as Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, and Gregory Hines. His contributions to dance extended beyond the silver screen, as he performed in music videos, television shows, and various live performances. While Boogaloo Shrimp's fame reached great heights during the 1980s, he encountered challenges as the popularity of breakdancing waned in the following decade. However, his impact on the dance world remained significant, and his influence can be seen in contemporary dance styles and in the work of subsequent generations of dancers. Boogaloo Shrimp's legacy continues to be celebrated by dancers and enthusiasts worldwide. His innovative techniques and charismatic performances have left an indelible mark on the history of dance, and he remains an inspiration to aspiring dancers who aim to push the boundaries of movement and self-expression. Though Boogaloo Shrimp's dancing career was most prominent in the 1980s, his contributions to dance and hip-hop culture have ensured his place as an enduring figure in the annals of dance history. Now you can learn more about this fascinating career through this conversation on Vinyl Community Podcasts!
| Concert Buddie | Talking on Sugarman - Reflecting on Sixto Rodriguez | 14 Aug 2023 | 00:39:56 | |
Welcome back, Buddies! On this episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts, I'm joined by Rob (Northern Revolutions) to share our thoughts on the incredible story of Sixto Diaz Rodriguez - recording artist, father, and subject of the 2013 Academy Award Winning Documentary "Searching For Sugarman". Mr. Rodriguez passed away recently at the age of 81, leaving behind incredible music and a story even the best writers in Hollywood could not emulate. The film suggests that Rodriguez was lost to obscurity (in the music industry) - especially in his own country - only to shockingly learn about about a devoted following in South Africa. Yet that's not the entire tale. Rob and I discuss the documentary, Rodriguez' career and album output, plus share some notes not found in the documentary and developments following the film. An artist we both came to enjoy immensely due to the film, we both found it fitting that even on the day his passing was announced he was not given his full due with the unfortunate news of the passing of Robbie Robertson of The Band. Life still imitating art; art imitating life. Fitting, no? Perhaps just another example of those "Inner City Blues"....

| Safe & Sound Texas Audio Excursion | Unveiling Steely Dan: Engineer Roger Nichols’ Daughter Shares Inside Scoops (Part One) | 09 Aug 2023 | 00:34:55 | |
Hello and welcome to another Audio Excursion! Roger Nichols was educated in Nuclear Physics and worked as an operator at a Nuclear Plant in California with the acronym SONGS. Ironically after just a few years in that industry, he threw it all away to learn how to become a Recording Engineer. He became the recording engineer for Steely Dan by luck as they wanted to record some material for Gary Katz of ABC Records, but the only engineer around was Roger Nichols. And the rest, as they say, is history. A tight knit group of professional musicians joined the production team and the band. Roger also did engineering work for many others with John Denver being a regular client and friend of Roger. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2011 leaving behing his wife Connie and 2 daughters, Cimcie and Ashley. Cimcie has graciously agreed to have a wide ranging interview here on Vinyl Community Podcasts. Enjoy!

| Concert Buddie | Mind of The Record Collector: Josh Norrid - CEO/Owner of Hi-Fidelity Records | 14 Aug 2024 | 00:59:07 | |
Buddies, Record Collectors, lend me your ears! For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts we resume my series "Mind of The Record Collector" which asks what we collect, why we collect it, and how we find it. Our guest today aims to touch all three tenets, and that is Josh Norrid - CEO/Owner of Hi-Fidelity Records in Tulsa, OK. Josh has a story familiar to many in the Vinyl Community: how a passion for this format and the music that comes from it lead him to work at record stores, for record companies, and eventually to open and operate his own business selling the best of the best Audiophile and high-end records available in the market today. Josh cut his teeth as a buyer at Josey Records, then learned directly from the pulpit (literally) of Chad Kassem's Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions operations in Salina, KS, before finally taking the leap in founding his own online business. Josh shares his personal journey as a collector along that road and shares his thoughts on the hobby today, how he sources his inventory, and even shares how he's added 21st century social marketing techniques to put the best pieces in the hands of the best collectors anywhere. Josh has a burgeoning presence on social media, including his own YouTube channel sharing information, tips, and details he's honed in his 20 years plus in the business. We know you'll enjoy this latest "Mind of The Record Collector" as much as we did!
