106 Multi-Cat Households - Treating more than just the Patients28 Oct 202500:25:06

Episode 106 – Multi-Cat Households - Treating more than just the Patients

Here in the UAE, I see many multi-cat households with behavioural presentations.

These households can range from 2 to 32 (my biggest ever MCH!) cats and are hugely complex to understand, assess, evaluate and treat.

If you know anything about feline behaviour, you know that cats are socially flexible, non-socially obligate, obsessed with resources and often unable to reconcile differences or hostile relationships with other cats.

This can lead to a whole host of problems including undesirable elimination outside the litter box, inter-cat aggression and physical health manifestations of stress.

In this episode I chat through my approach to large multi-cat households and how, even if the caregivers highlight only some specific cats in the household as showing problematic behaviours, I always consider the effect that these situations have on ALL the cats in the home.

If you'd like to learn more about Feline Behaviour, then my "Learn To Speak Cat" course is an absolute must for you!

097 Risk Assessment25 Aug 202500:24:20

Episode 97 – Risk Assessment

Comprehensively assessing the risk of a Behaviour Case can be one of the most important things to do when you are first presented with a patient.

Whether you're a GP vet faced with a tricky situation, a Vet or Veterinary Nurse with an interest in Veterinary Behaviour Medicine, or a non-Veterinary Behaviour practitioner, it is always really good practice to perform a risk assessment and have an open conversation with the caregiver based on this risk assessment

In this episode, I tell you my top 3 risks to assess against and give you 4 specific things to evaluate when it comes to assessing risk.

Following these steps will give you so much more clarity when it comes to advising your clients on the risk – and safety aspects of their pet's behaviour.

096 The Veterinary Behaviour First Aid Kit18 Aug 202500:21:38

Episode 96 – The Veterinary Behaviour First Aid Kit

How many times does it happen that a patient presents with a Behavioural Presentation that you don't feel fully equipped to deal with?

Or the client just happens to mention at the end of a consultation – as they're walking out of the door – that their cat has been urinating outside of the litter box or that their dog has been recently aggressive to a family member.

What on earth should you and can you do in these situations?

This is where having a bit of a "Veterinary Behaviour First Aid" plan can be really useful, especially after performing a risk assessment, which we'll talk about in next week's episode, so make sure to tune in!

In this episode, I give you a list of 4 things you can do to provide immediate Behavioural First Aid to keep everyone safe and improve your patient's behavioural health until you can either see them for a more in-depth Behaviour Consultation or arrange referral to a Veterinary Behavioursist!

If you're not quite sure which short acting psychopharmaceutical might be a good option for your patient, check out my PSYCHOACTIVE course, which will give you so much more knowledge and confidence on which medication to choose:

095 What's New in FIC in Cats11 Aug 202500:23:03

Episode 95 – What's New in FIC in Cats

Feline Idiopathic Cystitis is such a fascinating disease from a Veterinary Behaviour Medicine perspective as it poses the perfect intersection between physical and behavioural health.

It is a diagnosis of exclusion, is mainly seen in younger cats under 10 years of age (2-7 years is most common), and can be triggered or exacerbated by stressful events.

Often referred to as "bladder migraine", this inflammatory psychoneuroendocrine disease can be very uncomfortable for cats, may cause them to "block" and can have recurrences over time, which can lead to euthanasia (20% mortality).

While we are aware of some risk factors for FIC (male, pedigree, overweight, indoor only cats fed on a dry diet… and a few more…), we are always in search of other factors that may contribute to the development and recurrence of this disease.

In this episode, I mention a recent study (see below) that found a significant statistical association between cats that are fearful of unfamiliar people and the RECURRENCE (not development) of FIC episodes.

Cats that were fearul of familiar people were also overrepresented in the recurrence group.

So, this gives us even more information when we think about the urgency of treating these behavioural presentations in cats, especially if they have had an episode of FIC in the past!

Here's the study I mention in this episode:

Caudron, M., Laroche, P., Bazin, I. and Desmarchelier, M., 2025. Association between behavioral factors and recurrence rate in cats with feline" idiopathic" cystitis. Journal of Veterinary Behavior, 78, pp.90-96.

094 Client Education and Managing Expectations04 Aug 202500:29:30

Episode 94 – Client Education and Managing Expectations

Wow, this turned into a bit of a philosophical episode… because these are topics I have been thinking about and contemplating a lot lately.

What is it that actually creates a positive outcome in the Veterinary Behaviour Medicine World?

Of course, behaviour change in the patient is an important part, but what about a shift in the expectations, beliefs and understanding of the caregiver? How important is this in creating a successful outcome?

In this episode I touch on managing expectations and how some of my cases have massively turned around for the better once the caregiver was able to shift their expectations of their pet and life with their pet.

I also talk about leadership styles within a consultation and how declarative versus cooperative we should be as Behaviour Professionals to achieve the best outcomes and how our own as well as caregiver beliefs influence our consultations…

I told you, a bit of a philosophical one, but an episode I really enjoyed recording.

093 Side Effects from Psychotropic Medications28 Jul 202500:29:14

Episode 93 – Side Effects from Psychotropic Medications

Side effects are something we ALL think about when prescribing any medication for our patients, not just psychopharmaceuticals.

But for some reason, whether it's because these meds are still so unknown to many in the industry, or because of experiences we have heard from people – friends, family – who have been prescribed these medications, conversations around side effects from psychotropics seem more difficult to navigate.

In this episode, I unpack the 2 most common caregiver concerns I encounter when talking about psychotropic medications as well as what side effects we commonly expect to see with long-acting medications and how I approach these situations.

Here's the study I mention in the episode:

Dreschel, N.A., 2010. The effects of fear and anxiety on health and lifespan in pet dogs. Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 125(3-4), pp.157-162.

092 Pica and GI Disease in Dogs and Cats21 Jul 202500:22:04

Episode 92 – Pica and GI Disease in Dogs and Cats

What a fascinating topic and one I've been thinking a lot about in recent weeks.

We have seen a spike in foreign body surgeries at my clinic in Abu Dhabi in recent weeks – as we all know, these things tend to come in 3s – and this, together with the publication of the below paper in JAVMA, has really had myself and my team thinking about best protocols when it comes to pica – the ingestion of non-food items – and resulting foreign body retrieval.

In this episode I chat about when it might be "normal" for pets to ingest non-food items, what pica means from a behavioural perspective and what physical health diseases aside from GI disease may lead to pica.

And, I dive into the below paper and why we have now made it an SOP to get GI biopsies during all foreign body retrieval procedures unless contra-indicated.

Here's the paper I talk about in the episode:

Perez, J., Ford, S. and Lynch, H., 2025. Pica as a clinical sign of a chronic enteropathy in dogs and cats. Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association1(aop), pp.1-6.

091 Open Concept14 Jul 202500:33:26

Episode 91 – Open Concept

I absolutely love pushing the boundaries of what is possible in Veterinary Medicine and indeed the Veterinary Industry.

In this thought-provoking episode, Nora and I chat about our newly embraced "Open Concept", which allows for more transparency, owner presence and owner contribution to their pets' health and treatment.

I totally understand that this may be a challenging concept for many in the Veterinary Industry, however, I feel that there are so many benefits to be gained from thinking outside the box and embracing different ways of approaching pet health.

Listen as I share a childhood experience that really got me thinking about "emotional safety", how an experience that Nora had with one of her daughters elicited those same thoughts and how we therefore collectively wanted to explore our patients' emotional safety a lot more.

I would absolutely LOVE to hear what you thought about the episode and your thoughts on the topic !!

090 Preparing for an Aggressive Dog Consultation07 Jul 202500:34:24

Episode 90 – Preparing for an Aggressive Dog Consultation

As Veterinary Behaviourists, safety is an extremely important part of our practice – safety for ourselves, our teams, safety for third parties and safety for the caregivers as well as the patients. Safety is especially important when we regularly see patients that are being presented for aggressive behaviours and that have a bite history.

Safety is something I learned about very early on in my residency, but also something that I review and re-evaluate on a regular basis to ensure that safety protocols are fit for purpose and up to date, that my team is briefed and that safety is also always at the top of their minds when it comes to Behaviour Patients.

In this episode, I chat about the safety aspects I consider before, during and after the consultation, different strategies that I use myself in my own practice, but also strategies I have seen my colleagues around the world use in their practices.

This episode is INVALUABLE for anyone who is thinking about starting a Behaviour Service or who regularly sees Behaviour Patients including those that have a history of aggression.

One of THE most important aspects of keeping everyone safe is the ability to REALLY read canine body language and facial expressions well and if you are keen to get better at this, then I have just the thing for you!

089 Holiday Choices for Cats – Home or Cattery?30 Jun 202500:32:23

Episode 89 – Holiday Choices for Cats – Home or Cattery?

We all want what is best for our feline friends and that includes ensuring their happiness, safety and behavioural health while we are on holiday or traveling.

But what IS actually best for them?

·         To stay at home in their familiar surroundings and territory?

·         To stay in a cattery where they will have company and be monitored at all times?

·         Or, should they even travel with you where possible?

The answer is, there is no "one size fits all approach" when it comes to behaviour and what is best for each individual.

In this episode, Nora and I chat through the many positive options there are to keep our kitties safe and happy during holiday times, always keeping in mind their natural preferences and behavioural needs.

088 Serotonin Syndrome - What you need to know!23 Jun 202500:31:14

Episode 88 – Serotonin Syndrome - What you need to know!

Serotonin Syndrome, also known as Serotonin Toxicity, is the most severe side effect of serotonergic medication and can potentially be fatal if not treated and managed.

Therefore, understandably, many vets are very cautious when it comes to prescribing serotonergic agents and especially when combining serotonergic agents such as an SSRI and, for example, trazodone.

·         But, how frequent is this side effect in practice?

·         What are the signs you should be looking out for?

·         What can you teach your caregivers to do in terms of monitoring to screen for mild signs of Serotonin Syndrome?

·         What medications, aside from psychopharmaceutical medications, can cause Serotonin Syndrome?

·         What are the Differential Diagnoses for Serotonin Syndrome?

·         And how do you treat a pet with Serotonin Toxicity?

I talk about all this and more in this episode!

Here are the studies I mention in the episode:

1.      Indrawirawan, Y., & McAlees, T. (2014). Tramadol toxicity in a cat: Case report and literature review of serotonin syndrome. Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 16(7), 572–578. https://doi.org/10.1177/1098612X14539088

105 15-minute Speed Coaching with Sharon Jones20 Oct 202500:22:17

Episode 105 – 15-minute Speed Coaching with Sharon Jones

Welcome to our brand-new episode format – 15-minute Speed Coaching Sessions for Veterinary- and Pet Care Professionals!

The rules of the game are as follows:

·         Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted.

·         Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish…

·         Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started!

In this episode, I chat to trainer and behaviourist, Sharon Jones, who has questions around managing barrier frustration in urgent situations, where we absolutely need Safety Management strategies in place, such as a baby joining the home or learning to crawl.

We are often faced with situations where we need to manage safety but haven't yet got the tools in place to do so or where the dog becomes very frustrated at being confined or no longer being able to access high value areas of the home.

Listen as we brainstorm the challenge of managing these cases and come up with a number of tools we could use while conditioning the dog to cope with barriers.

If you'd like to book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me, you can do that right here:

086 Behaviour Signs and Neurotransmitters09 Jun 202500:18:14

Episode 86 – Behaviour Signs and Neurotransmitters

When I first started out in Veterinary Behaviour Medicine, knowing which Behaviour Medication to choose for any given patients was a real struggle. I didn't really know what to base my choices on, often reached for the same medication over and over again without really knowing why and just hoping that I'd made the right decision.

Sound familiar?

As I progressed through my residency, I started to understand how behavioural signs are correlated with neurotransmitters in the brain and how to make really smear medication choices to affect these neurotransmitter levels.

In this episode I chat through exactly this and give some examples of how to start thinking about which medications to choose according to the signs the patient is showing.

084 Assessing and Managing Inter-Cat Tension & Aggression Cases26 May 202500:36:20

Episode 84 – Assessing and Managing Inter-Cat Tension & Aggression Cases

This week, I saw a 2-cat, a 4-cat and an 8-cat home, all with diagnoses of inter-cat tension or inter-cat aggression.

These cases can be really complex to work up and understanding the fine nuances of cat-cat sociability can be really challenging.

In this episode, I share the things I think about and the questions I ask when I go into a multi-cat home with inter-cat tension or aggression.

You'll hear me talk about severity of behaviour, covert and overt feline aggressive behaviours, how to discern play from hostile behaviours, why it is important to assess everyone in the home including the cats not obviously involved in aggressive events and some mistakes that caregivers commonly make when they are living with cats who are fighting.

Have a listen also to episodes 18 and 48 of this podcast to learn more about resources and the 5 Pillars of a Health Feline Environment, both of which are so important when it comes to inter-cat tension.

083 We are what we eat. A conversation about Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome in dogs and cats - with Dr Gaelle Joanny19 May 202500:46:51

Episode 83 – We are what we eat. A conversation about Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome in dogs and cats - with Dr Gaelle Joanny

This is SUCH an epic episode. The quality of conversation with Dr Gaelle Joanny always blows my mind and I am so grateful to be able to share this with you.

I have spoken about Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome in dogs and cats before – check out episodes 55 & 57 of this podcast for more background information.

However, in this episode, we take a deep dive into the nutritional ways we can support our patients that are suffering with this disease – both with diets and nutraceuticals.

Here are some things you'll take away from this episode:

1.      How feeding a good quality diet over a lifetime can prevent Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.

2.      Nutraceuticals to help manage Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome and how they work.

3.      Medium Chain Triglycerides as an alternative fuel source for the brain.

4.      How management and environmental enrichment can help.

5.      Why we all need to get so much better at recognizing the signs of Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome!

Dr Gaelle brings her nutritional expertise to the conversation; we talk about a number of influential studies on this topic and we both express the importance of recognizing the signs of this degenerative disease so we can support and manage our pets so much better in their twilight years – because… don't they just deserve that from us!

Keep an eye on our Social Media Channels in the coming days and weeks for even more information about the diets and nutraceuticals mentioned in this episode!

We really hope you enjoy this episode; it is packed with so much information!

082 How young is too young to start Behaviour Meds?12 May 202500:24:25

Episode 82 – How young is too young to start Behaviour Meds?

"Oh, I'm sure they'll grow out of it…". A phrase that makes my heart sink when it comes to young dogs with obvious behavioural diagnoses.

Now, what do I mean by "young"? We're talking about dogs somewhere between 6 and 12 months of age and yes, it is absolutely possible that these youngsters already have a behavioural diagnosis based on genetics, epigenetics and early life learning experiences.

Should we wait to treat them?

Absolutely not!

In this episode, I chat through my reasons for making this bold statement and present you with a nice study by Dr Jill Sackman, DACVB, et.al. "Outcomes and side effects of Behavior Medications in young dogs", that shows that the use of behaviour medications in young dogs (6-12 months of age), is safe and prevents the continued development of more troublesome problem behaviours!

081 Janice and Robbie's Story05 May 202500:36:16

Episode 81 – Janice and Robbie's Story

Robbie is probably one of the most anxious dogs I have seen in my 6 years working as a Veterinary Psychiatrist.

His behaviour got so bad that his lovely caregiver, Janice, had to sleep on the sofa with him for several weeks, neither of them getting much sleep.

When I first met him, Robbie would pace, pant, patrol the home, lick walls and cupboards, and paw at the floor to try to make himself feel a little better.

The relationship with his housemate dogs became extremely tense as they were just not able to read his body language or understand his behaviour.

Everyone was stressed and at a loss.

After an initial consultation, I started Robbie on a comprehensive psychopharmaceutical treatment plan and within a few weeks, his anxiety had decreased to the point that Janice could sleep in her own bed again.

Robbie continues to go from strength to strength and has even started to play with his toys again and is friends with his housemate dogs again.

080 The Business of Behaviour28 Apr 202500:43:44

Episode 80 – The Business of Behaviour

In this episode, I chat to Jo and Vicky from Canine Business Academy, (guys, I had a blooper when I introduced Jo & Vicky's business – It is Canine BUSINESS Academy, not Canine Behaviour Academy – sorry, my bad…), a company based in the UK, dedicated to helping Pet Behaviour Professionals create successful and profitable businesses.

We talk about the stigma around actually earning money as Behaviour Professionals, and how this is the only way we can actually serve our clients and patients.

I share about the struggles I had to overcome when I first opened my Veterinary Clinic, as business skills are definitely not something we were taught when I was at Vet School!

We also delve into comparison-itis, niche-ing and the importance of working with business coaches to help and support Pet Behaviour Entrepreneurs on their journeys.

If you have your own Pet Care Business, are thinking of taking the plunge and opening your own business, or simply want to listen to a hugely interesting and inspiring conversation, then this is the episode for you !

I had an incredible time at the WSAVA Congress in Rio and one of the things that I really took away as a musing from the Congress is the question as to whether or how we can differentiate pain from emotional states such as anxiety. We know that pain has an emotional component – often fear or anxiety – so do we therefore need to be more comprehensive in treating our painful patients by treating both pain and anxiety?

I'm not sure we have all the answers yet and we definitely don't have any research looking at this, however, my suspicion is that we probably should be treating both!

In this episode I give you my 3 top explanations of why pain and emotional state are so interwoven and intertwined and how I think about treating my Behaviour Patients that are also in pain!

If you'd like to learn more about the medications that can treat both pain and emotional state, then have a look at my AMAZING PSYCHOACTIVE course:

077 Considerations for Multi Cat Households with Lisa Sinnott07 Apr 202500:18:09

Episode 77 – Considerations for Multi Cat Households with Lisa Sinnott

Multi Cat Households can be challenging environments for the cats that live in them and also the caregivers that live with those cats, especially if there are hostile or aggressive events between the cats.

In this episode, I chat to non-veterinary behaviourist, Lisa Sinnott about the types of cases she sees in the UK compared to my UAE based caseload and what some of things are that we need to consider when providing optimal environments for multi-cat homes.

In this episode we talk about:

1.      The importance of resources

2.      Why cats, unlike humans, are NOT social eaters

3.      How cats navigate the world through their sense of smell

4.      Why reading body language is so important

074 How to Administer Medications to our Pets18 Mar 202500:28:52

Episode 74 – How to Administer Medications to our Pets

Giving tablets to our pets is not always easy, and cats especially are notoriously difficult to administer oral medication to!

The problem with not being able to give medication is that this may interfere with your pet's medical care and have a detrimental effect on their physical or mental and emotional health.

One of the most important things I stress in this episode is to ask for help from your vet or pet care professional if you are struggling to give oral medication to your pet – there is usually a different solution out there so we can ensure your pet gets the treatment they need together!

In this episode, I share my Top 10 Tips for medication administration to help you easily and successfully give tablets to your pet.

Things you'll learn in this episode:

1.      Why I dislike Pill Poppers so much!

2.      How to become a detective at finding a super high value food for your pet!

3.      How play and operant conditioning can help.

…and so much more!

068 Dog Walks – What You Need To Know!04 Feb 202500:29:37

Episode 68 – Dog Walks – What You Need To Know!

Dog walks are supposed to be a fun and enriching activity for everyone – dog and walker.

But sometimes, they just aren't.

And sometimes, walks are not necessary or appropriate, for example, if your dog is fearful, injured or ill or if the weather won't allow for safe or comfortable walks.

In this episode, I dispel the social myth that dogs MUST be walked numerous times per day to prove good dog guardianship and welfare, in fact, in some cases, frequent walks can actually be detrimental to welfare.

Don't get me wrong, for many, many dogs, walks are an important part of their physical and mental enrichment, and many dogs and guardians love and treasure their walks together, but for some, walks are stressful and even dangerous.

In these cases, there are a number of alternatives to walks, which I share in this episode.

For even more information, please download my amazing FREE PDF all about dog walks and alternatives to walks:

103 15-minute Speed Coaching with Victoria Shepherd06 Oct 202500:25:22

Episode 103 – 15-minute Speed Coaching with Victoria Shepherd

Welcome to our brand-new episode format – 15-minute Speed Coaching Sessions for Veterinary- and Pet Care Professionals!

The rules of the game are as follows:

·         Episodes will be in-the-moment, off-the-cuff and unscripted.

·         Coaching sessions will be 15 Minutes MAXIMUM, so wherever we finish, we finish…

·         Which means that we might not find complete resolution to your question, but we will certainly get the thought process started!

In this episode, I chat to holistic groomer and aspiring behaviourist (currently with a behaviour certification), Victoria Shepherd, who has questions around communicating the possibility that her patients may be in pain to both the caregiver and the caregiver's vet.

As pet professionals who spend a lot of time with their patients and put their hands on them A LOT, groomers often recognize signs of pain or discomfort. And communicating that to the caregiver and the GP vet can be challenging.

I absolutely LOVED recording this episode and it ends with a bit of a cliff hanger… so tune in…

If you'd like to book a 30-minute Vet-Vet or Vet-Pet Care Professional Consultation with me, you can do that right here:

067 - Canine Adolescence – The Terrible Teens28 Jan 202500:32:22

Episode 67 – Canine Adolescence – The Terrible Teens

Is your lovely puppy changing before your very eyes?

Are they showing behaviours you have never seen before and are, quite frankly, challenging and disturbing?

Are they pushing boundaries and taking more risks?

Are they growing into larger and stronger dogs that are becoming difficult to handle?

Is this putting a strain on your relationship with them?

The reason? Adolescence.

Just like human children, young dogs also go through a developmental period known as adolescence and just like with human children, this can be a challenging, but hugely important time.

The reason you are feeling overwhelmed is because you possibly didn't realise that canine adolescence is a thing.

The reason you are struggling to understand your dog is because you didn't know about all the physical and emotional changes that take place in this time.

The reason your relationship might be challenged is because you don't know yet how to help your dog through this period.

That's where I have you covered!

Click the link below to download your FREE PDF all about Canine Adolescence to understand your dog better and get amazing tips on how to help them cope in this challenging period.

https://katrin-jahn.mykajabi.com/adolescence-download

Are you the proud parent of a new puppy who is driving you crazy with their constant biting, nipping or mouthing?

Are your ankles and wrists showing the marks of tiny, sharp puppy teeth?

Are you and your kids having to jump onto the sofa to rescue yourselves from your little puppy-shark?

065 Collaboration between Trainers and Veterinary Behaviourists – A Chat with Lottie Hanks14 Jan 202500:46:50

Episode 65 – Collaboration between Trainers and Veterinary Behaviourists – A Chat with Lottie Hanks

I cannot stress enough how important it is for Veterinary- and other Pet Care Professionals to collaborate for the well-being of our patients.

Sadly, there is still a divide and an unwillingness in both camps to come together and share unique areas of expertise for the sake of the pet.

In this episode, I chat to dog trainer and all-round amazing human being, Lottie Hanks, on how we have successfully collaborated on a number of cases, something that is not the norm in our industries… and, we have had AMAZING results even though we are based in different continents!

Episode 64 – Children and Pets Part 1

Are you an expecting parent waiting to bring a new baby into a home with existing pets?

Or perhaps you are a pet care professional looking for the best advice to give to new or expecting parents about introducing a new baby to their pets?

The reason you are worried about this is because you're not sure of the best way to approach this.

And the reason you are feeling stressed and anxious is because you feel guilty about disrupting your pet's routine or not being able to pay them as much attention as before.

This is all completely normal, and you will absolutely be able to manage this, with a little advice from myself and Nora.

As a mom of 2 young girls as well as 2 cats, Nora gives us her top tips on integrating new babies into a home of already existing kitty cats (with lots of transferrable information for doggie homes too!)

She chats about the importance of early preparation, the important role that dads play when the baby first comes home and how to navigate the feelings of guilt that can arise when a new mom's time and routines are turned on their heads.

We also talk about how important it is to be able to read canine and feline body language to understand how the pets might be feeling because of these changes in their homes and routines.

063 Preparing your Pet for Air Travel31 Dec 202400:33:02

Episode 63 – Preparing your Pet for Air Travel

Air travel can be a stressful experience for both pets and owners, but, with some thoughtful preparation and by following my 5-step approach for Pet Air Travel Preparation, we can manage the stress for the pets, which will also help pet owners feel more comfortable.

During my veterinary practice ownership in the UAE for the last 16 years, I have prepared around 300 pets ANNUALLY for Air Travel, which means I have been able to gather a wealth of knowledge and expertise when it comes to all things Pet Air Travel, especially how to alleviate and manage stress in pets during air travel.

Episode 62 – Deep Dive into The Veterinary Behaviour Consultation

Join me for a deep dive into some of the unique aspects of The Veterinary Behaviour Consultation and learn more about some of the really useful skillsets required to dig deep and really help bring about behaviour change.

Here are some of the things you'll take away from this episode:

1.      How to remove some of the barriers that might be holding you back from offering behaviour consultations in YOUR practice.

2.      That behaviour consultations don't have to be super lengthy in order to make a difference to your client and patient.

3.      How a really short and simple questionnaire can prompt your clients to talk about behaviour problems during routine veterinary visits.

4.      Why sensitivity, compassion, deep listening and thoughtful questioning are essential skills in any consultation.

5.      How to ensure you meet your client's desired outcomes while still focusing on the global health and welfare of your patient.

I really hope this episode gives you some food for thought and some inspiration to perhaps build mental and emotional healthcare into your everyday practice.

Here are the resources I mention during the episode (and where you can find that super short and simple questionnaire):

061 Canine Cognitive Skills - with Kay Attwood17 Dec 202400:39:30

Episode 61 – Canine Cognitive Skills - with Kay Attwood

I absolutely loved recording this episode with Kay!

Cognition and Cognitive Skills are so important when it comes to behavioural health, and I often use cognitive exercises as part of my treatment plans in order to teach coping skills as well as help dogs process better by accessing brain areas associated with cognition rather than brain areas associated with emotional reactivity or "fight or flight" states.

In this episode, Kay introduces us to her brand-new book "Canine Cognitive Skills" in which she teaches us about her "brain games" and how to use them for our own dogs and our patients!

This is a book for doggies of all ages, pet owners and pet care professionals alike and should be on your bookshelf if you want to learn more about canine cognition!

060 Romanian Rescue Dogs – Amelia and El's Story10 Dec 202400:51:26

Episode 60 – Romanian Rescue Dogs – Amelia and El's Story

Amelia and her wonderful caregiver El are amongst my very favourite client and patient and I chat to El on the 3 year anniversary of us starting to work together!

Amelia is a rescue dog from Romania who was transported across land to the UK to be with her new doggie mom and caregiver El in 2021.

Listen to El's incredible story of when Amelia first came to her as a very frightened pup and how she managed to win her trust and allow her to become her perfect canine partner.

In El's words, it has been and continues to be quite the journey, however, the care, dedication, open-mindedness and personal growth and sacrifice that El has shown over the last years is absolutely mind-blowing.

This is definitely a conversation you won't want to miss and gives so much hope and inspiration to anyone who may be living with a dog with past trauma and severe fears and anxieties.

I am so very proud of these two wonderful souls, and I hope you enjoy their story as much as I have enjoyed accompanying and supporting them.
