Episode 79: Five Finger Fanfare, Part 201 Jun 202401:07:00

We are back again, and this time we're returning to a classic show theme for another Part 2, this one focusing on the Five-Finger Fanfare (a term coined by the Super Marcato Bros. on their excellent and seminal VGM podcast). This is a term used to describe a run of 5 notes that line up with the first 5 notes of the minor scale - a technique used frequently in video game music. Will you be able to hear the Five-Finger Fanfares in each piece of Very Good Music the hosts brought to this episode? Only one way to find out!

Bonus Episode 11: VGMVGM Presents O Som do Cartucho's Masters of VGM!06 Jul 202200:32:49

Greetings, Gamers!

On this special bonus episode of Very Good Music, Bedroth is proud to present his VGM podcasting colleague Andre, host of the Brazilian O Som do Cartucho podcast! As one of only three international podcasts joining the event, and as the only podcast whose regular episodes have been released entirely in a language other than English, “Cartridge’s Sound” definitely lends a unique flavor to the proceedings.

There was a bit of confusion at first as to whether this episode would be posted on the BGMania thread or the Very Good Music thread. However, since VGMVGM won’t be posting another regular episode for at least a couple weeks, and BGMania has a full slate of episodes for July, we opted to present it for you here.

We hope you enjoy one of the final episodes in the inaugural Masters of VGM event!

Episode 67: Pikuniku (with Flare and Luna)15 Apr 202201:12:00

This week, Bedroth is joined by his two youngest daughters, Flare and Luna. The kids have been very excited to do their first podcast, and after a lot of back-and-forth, decided to talk about one of their favorite games to play together: Pikuniku.

The game, released in 2019 by Devolver Digital and developed by French-British indie collective Sectordub, stars a strange, red, ovoid creature named Piku (whose orange counterpart, Niku, is the avatar for player 2), as he takes on the megalomaniacal Mr. Sunshine, who wants to strip the land of all its resources, which he will use to hatch an even more nefarious plot. The single-player mode is a puzzle-platforming adventure, while the two-player mode includes both a cooperative adventure and competitive mini-games.

The clever, lighthearted soundtrack by Calum Boen (sometimes known simply as Bo En)perfectly complimentes the simple, childlike art style designed by Arnaud De Bock (also the game's creator) and the quirky, humorous story by Remi Forcadel.

You can find Calum at https://www.youtube.com/user/calumbowen and http://bo-en.info/, and you can check out (and purchase!) the Pikuniku soundtrack at https://calumbowen.bandcamp.com/album/pikuniku-original-soundtrack.

For more about the soundtrack, check out Kate Remington's interview with Calum on Music Respawn: http://www.respawnshow.com/home-1/2019/2/7/calum-bowens-funny-lighthearted-soundtrack-for-pikuniku

Episode 66: Cuphead (With Lemon Boy)19 Mar 202201:36:04

This week, Bedroth and Shootkapow are joined by Shootkapow's little brother, whose podcast personal is "Lemon Boy". Lemon Boy has made a couple of brief appearances before, but this time he is bringing his 10 favorite tracks from a game that has been taking up a lot of his attention: Cuphead!

The 2017 indie sensation, developed and published by Studio MDHR, the company started by brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, became famous for its unique visual aesthetic inspired by classic robber-hose animation style, as well as its high degree of difficulty. Also highly praised is the game's soundtrack, composed by Ontario jazz musician Kristofer Maddigan and performed by live jazz and big band musicians.

Episode 4-10: From Minnesota to Melee to Mother: Shogo Sakai with RJ04 Dec 202102:04:35

Greetings, Gamers! This time, we are joined by Shootkapow's good friend (and game developing partner) RJ! RJ's been recommending songs for the show for over a year, and we're really excited to have him on to talk about one of his favorite composers, Shogo Sakai!

Sakai isn't quite as well-known as some of the others we've discussed this season, nor is he as prolific as far as the number of games he's composed. However, he's been involved in the VGM scene for over 30 years, and his work on the massive (and beloved) soundtrack to Mother 3 has made him famous in at least the VGM fandom. And as always, everything we're bringing from his discography is Very Good Music!

Episode 4-9: The Metal Master from Oz, Mick Gordon with The Messenger13 Nov 202101:57:20

Greetings, Gamers! This week, we are joined by the patron saint of VGM Podcasts, Alex Messenger, to discuss the work of the man who composed the music for the realm of demons in Doom and Doom Eternal: Michael John "Mick" Gordon!

Gordon is well known for his hardcore musical style to modern re-imaginings of classic franchises like Killer Instinct, Wolfenstein, and the aforementioned Doom. He also happens to be Alex's favorite composer. We talk about all of that and more, and, as always, we play some Very Good Music!

Episode 4-8: Final Fantasy Character Themes by Nobuo Uematsu06 Nov 202101:19:42

Greetings, Gamers! This time around, all of our Very Good Music will follow a very specific theme. Nobuo Uematsu is probably the most famous video game music composer in the world. As such, we're going to hone in on a very small but significant corner of his library: Final Fantasy Character Themes!

Our songs today come from Final Fantasies IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X and run the gamut from slow and somber to soaring and heroic. We hope you enjoy this unique take on a composer focus as we look at the work of one of game music's greatest of all time.

Bonus Episode 8 - Arachnophonia with Dusklight31 Oct 202101:01:46

Greetings, Gamers, and welcome to another bonus episode! Dusklight joines us once again as we take a week off of the regular full-length episodes we've been droping during our composer-focused season to bring you a special holiday-themed spooky show!

Although they are among the most beneficial creatures on the planet, spiders have always had a creepy reputation. Maybe it's the silken death-traps they make with their butts. Maybe it's their fun way of liquefying their prey from the inside so they can drink them for dinner. Maybe it's just all those eyes and legs! Regrdless, there's some Very Good Music associated withour arachnid acquantances in the wide world of VGM, and we hope you enjoy the songs we've chosen for you.

Episode 4-7: Skeletroy Presents the 8-Bit Best of Sunsoft Sensation Naoki Kodaka23 Oct 202101:36:12

Greetings, Gamers! For this episode we're joined once again by Skeletroy as we go through the NES library (plus a couple of bonus Bat-tracks) of renowned Sunsoft composer Naoki Kodaka. We have a blast[er Master] discussing one of our very favorite composers who, while he definitely gets attention, is not as widely-known as industry titans like Kondo, Uematsu, and Shimomura.

Still, as this episode will show, few could rival the talents of Kodaka and his team in the realm of Very Good Music on the Famicom/NES.

Episode 4-5: Three Young Composers (Tristan Alric, Lena Raine, and Toby Fox)09 Oct 202101:45:53

Greetings, Gamers! For the first time this season (but not the last!) we bring you an episode focusing on multiple composers! This time we wanted to give the spotlite to three non-Japanese composers whose experience doesn't stretch back quite as far as the others we spoke about, but who are doing great work and who we believe have a bright future ahead of them!

Dusklight joins us (as always) for the season's 5th episode, where we Tristan Alric's wonderful, Paper Mario-inspired score for Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling; a wonderful, eclectic selection of tracks from Celeste's Lena Raine, and some highlights from the worldwide phenomenon, Deltarune, the latest work from multi-hyphenate Toby Fox. Episode 4-4: The SID Sensation, Ben Daglish with Lee from The Sound Test02 Oct 202102:14:33

Greetings, Gamers! This week we have a very special episode, co-hosted by our first intercontinental guest: Lee Tyrrell, the UK-based creator of The Sound Test podcast, where for over three years, Lee has hosted live VGM celebrations on YouTube and interviewed renowned composers, including the subject of today's show: legendary musician and SID chip composer Ben Daglish. Lee has curated a playlist designed to celebrate Daglish's life and work, and we really think you're going to enjoy this week's helping of Very Good Music.

VGMVGM hasn't explored the SID very much, so this deep dive is long overdue. It barely scratches the surface of this huge, historic part of the VGM landscape, so we encourage you to go on a deep dive of your own into the wonderful world of the C64 SID and its successors.

This week, Bedroth is joined by the one and only Bryan Clutter, creator of Level Down Games, a multimedia company dedicated to covering the best that pop culture has to offer, through reviews, videos, and podcasts, including BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast, on which Bedroth has been a guest several times! We are more than happy to welcome Bryan to join us this time to talk about his personal favorite VGM composer: Yuzo Koshiro!

As we will learn, Koshiro is an absolute behemoth in VGM history. From his early days with Nihon Falcom working on the Japanese home computer system, the PC88, through his time as a freelance and as founder and president of his own development companny, Ancient, Koshiro has been an enduring presence in the world of games, and the source of a great deal of Very Good Music, just a small taste of which we are happy to bring you today.

Episode 4-2: The Queen of VGM, Yoko Shimomura18 Sep 202101:55:05

Greetings, gamers! Let's talk about some of the most successful, longest-running franchises in gaming. Street Fighter. Mario. Final Fantasy. Mana. Kingdom Hearts. You know what they all have in common? Very Good Music, composed by the queen of VGM herself, Yoko Shimomura!

This week, Bedroth and Shootkapow talk about another of their favorites, one of the most famous video game music makers on the planet. We trace her trajectory from her roots at Capcom all the way through her latest freelance collaboration with K-pop star Taeyeon. From chiptune jams to vocal-orchestral masterpieces, though, everything follows our number one rule: It's all Very Good Music!

So good, this intro says it twice!

Greetings, Gamers, and welcome to Season 4! This season is all about composers! Some of the folks we'll discuss this season may be new names for you, and a few will be very well-known. Our first focus is a special one, though. Yasunori Mitsuda is possibly most well-known as the composer of the phenomenal soundtrack to the equaly phenomenal Super Nintendo RPG classic, Chrono Trigger. But that was just the beginning.

This episode explores a lot of Very Good Music, as always, and ventures into realms of this maestro's discography that surprised even the two of us, who have long counted him among our favorite composers! We can't think of a better way to start this new phase of our VGM road trip, and we're excited to have you along for the ride!

Bonus Episode 7 - Season 4 Prequel28 Aug 202101:04:31

Greeting, Gamers! Welcome to our second consecutive bonus episode, al about the number 4! In season 4, as you've heard, we're using each episode to focus on a particular composer. However, a while back, Shootkapow had the cool idea to play "VGM related to 4 of something". I always figured we'd play it to open up season four...so why not use it as a prequel? It may seem like a limiting topic, but trust us...everything you'll hear is very good music!

Bonus Episode 6 - Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony Musical Commentary21 Aug 202102:15:23

Greetings, Gamers, and welcome to a very special bonus episode, where Bedroth flies solo to discuss the songs featured in the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics!

Special thanks to Nikkei on Twitter, who appears to have been the first to publish the official list of 19 songs played in the ceremony. Thanks also to YouTubers Deh Almeida and Nicolas Monteiro, who uploaded rips of the individual themes played at the ceremony which, along with the always-wonderful VGMDB website, helped make this episode possible. Anything I get right today will be a tribute to the information I found there, as well as on various crowdsourced info-banks like Wikipedia (only approved, source-citing articles!) and the Fandom Wiki (for the more obscure stuff).

Here's a link to the MediaFiles episode mentioned in the intro. Seriously, you should totally be listening to this show! https://anchor.fm/the-mediafiles/episodes/Olympic-Games-Tokyo-2020-e15iikh/a-a69t9lj

Episode 3-6: Catlandia Bloopers and Commentary with Ryan Steel19 May 202101:21:13

Listen as Bedroth, Shootkapow, and special guest, composer Ryan Steel, discuss a super-wide variety of topics as they listen to the songs from Episode 3-6 of the podcast. Trigger warning: there is some discussion about American/Canadian political/economic topics (specifically healthcare and military spending) between 24:31 and 26:35. If that’s not your jam, skip it, and enjoy our chatter about composition, sound design, the pronunciation of our names, learning from failure, game jams, and, of course, the reality of the Flat Earth, among many other topics!

In case it's not obvious, if you haven't listened to Episode 3-6, you should really pause and go check it out first! Here's a link: https://youtu.be/WNI7qKQq-P4

Episode 3-6: Catlandia: Crisis at Fort Pawprint with Ryan Steel18 May 202102:04:03

Greetings, Gamers! Coming off of our cat-stravaganza with Dusk last week, we are excited to finally bring you our interview with Ryan Steel, VGMVGM patron and composer of Catlandia: Crisis at Fort Pawprint! This is just such a diverse, well-made soundtrack, and we had a blast talking about it!

Ryan is a Sound Designer and Music Composer from Canada. Playing video games were some of his earliest memories, and he grew up loving the music, learning a variety of instruments growing up and trying to play all those sweet VGM tunes on them. When he moved out to the farm he decided to stop playing in metal bands and started writing video game music because everything he was writing already fit the bill.

Thanks as always to our amazing patrons and the artists who made our show art and theme song. Links to their content can be found below the playlist on our YouTube video! You, too, can become a patron at patreon.com/vgmvgm, and you can reach out to us one of these ways:

Episode 3-2, Part 1: Let the Battles Begin! (RPG Battle Themes)23 Mar 202101:13:34

Greetings, Gamers! This time around, we ended up splitting our playlist into two episodes, because this topic – RPG Battle Themes – is just too big to narrow down to 14 tracks! This week, Shootkapow and I each bring you 5 tracks (out of a total of 10 we each picked) from tactical, turn-based, or adventure-style role playing games. There are some classics here, as well as some more obscure picks, but as always, everything is Very Good Music!

Bear with us – I actually decided partway through this episode to split the tracks up instead of going for one full-sized, 20-song extravaganza. We hope you enjoy the format and the rare opportunity for some back-to-back episodes!

Thanks as always to our amazing patrons and the artists who made our show art and theme song. Links to their content can be found below the playlist on our YouTube video! You, too, can become a patron at patreon.com/vgmvgm, and you can reach out to us by e-mail at verygoodmusicvgm@gmail.com, on Twitter @Shootkapow, or by leaving us a voice message at anchor.com/vgmvgm. You can also leave us a comment on YouTube and while you're at it, please let us know if you like the video, and subscribe and ring the bell to be notified of future episodes! We look forward to hearing from you!

Episode 3-1: Level 3 Unlocked!09 Mar 202101:40:56

Greetings, Gamers, and welcome to Level 3! To kick our third season (and 2nd year, wow!), we've selected tunes from the 3rd level/area/stage of some of our favorite games, along with a few others we've never played! As usual when it's not a spotlight episode, we're featuring a wide range of publishers, platforms, and eras in gaming, but as always, everything follows our number one rule: It's all Very Good Music!

While a couple of tracks from some of our MVPs are notably absent (no Flowers of Antimony from Shovel Knight or Threed from Earthbound???), Shootkapow and I are very proud of this list we've put together. Check out the YouTube video and let us know in the comments, shout out your guesses @Shootkapow on Twitter, or email Bedroth at verygoodmusicvgm@gmail.com!

Episode 2-11: Platformers with ProfJeff!12 Jan 202102:14:41

Greetings, Gamers, and Happy New Year! This week, the hosts are joined by Apparently-Regular-Episode-Eleven-Cohost ProfJeff! The trio has an absolute blast discussing some of what might be considered lower-tier platformers. Or at least 2D side-scrollers. We play it a little fast and loose. But just like always, you can rest assured in the fact that everything we’re playing is Very Good Music!

Note - we usually try to keep this show G-rated. This one gets solidly PG in a few places - notably in our discussions about Donk and Tembo and after our Spelunky discussion. For anyone who is sensitive to mild cursing or innuendo, discretion is advised.

Thanks as always to our amazing patrons and the artists who made our show art and theme song. Links to their content can be found below the playlist on our YouTube video! You, too, can become a patron at patreon.com/vgmvgm, and you can reach out to us by e-mail at verygoodmusicvgm@gmail.com, on Twitter @Shootkpow, or by leaving us a voice message at anchor.com/vgmvgm. Very Good Music Bonus Episode 4: Interview with Artist Naomi Rubin05 Jan 202101:30:52

In this very special bonus episode, the hosts are joined by the artist who designed their awesome cover art: Naomi Rubin! We had a blast digging into Naomi’s process for coming up with the VGMVGM design, and in talking about some of her influences. Of course, there’s still plenty of Very Good Music, as the trio listens to three songs, each representing one of the stars of the art itself: Sans, Zelda, and Proto Man!

No playlist this week. Naomi is the star of this show, and we want to keep the music a bit of a surprise. More than ever, we would love for you to check out the accompanying video on YouTube, where you can get an exclusive look at some of Naomi’s in-process artwork!

Finally…we have a Discord now! Come join us and talk about the music here: https://discord.com/invite/qpbXPdCf2N

That’s all for now. We’ll see you in one week for Episode 2-11: Platformers with ProfJeff!

Episode 2-10: Very, Very Good Music (2020 Podcast Year in Review)29 Dec 202002:14:07

Here it is, gamers...our 10 best favorite most memorable(?) tracks from the podcast in 2020. Yeah, the only real rhyme or reason to this is that these are the tracks we picked when we HAD to pick 10 tracks for our end-of-year special. Take from that what you will! Either way, we had a blast. We even get to open up with a few picks from our wonderful patrons! Thanks for a great year, and let's all hope that 2021 holds many great things for us all!

You can also leave us a comment on YouTube and while you're at it, please let us know if you like the video, and subscribe and ring the bell to be notified of future episodes! We look forward to hearing from you!

No track list, to maintain the mystery. If you really want one, it's available on the YouTube video!

Episode 2-9: A Holly Jolly Podcast15 Dec 202001:20:26

Sleigh bells ring...are you listening? Yes, you are...to another batch of winter vgm! Join the hosts for another episode, this one exploring the less icy, snowy side of the season and exploring the jollier, more festive kind of music we all associate with this time of year. In fact, see if you can count how many times Bedroth says "festive" in this episode!

This episode also features a lot of bonus music in between the main tracks. Check the show notes for information about those songs, and check out our accompanying YouTube playlist to hear the songs without our inane chatter on top of them.

Episode 2-7: Pokemon! with the Last Rican and Pernell01 Dec 202003:21:01

Welcome to our first ever Patron-requested episode! Our wonderful patron, Daryll "The Last Rican" Bowers, host of the VGM Fight Club podcast, has brought along a good friend, Pernell of the Rhythm and Pixels podcast! It's an extra-long podcast host extravaganza as we discuss a series that is very close to three of our hearts: Pokemon!

Enjoy a diverse selection of tunes from three veterans and one noob (yours truly) as we explore a small part of the history of this world-famous, long-running franchise. The Last Rican has also brought along some quiz questions to try to stump Pernell and Shootkapow. See how many you can answer as you follow us on our journey through the various Pokemon regions!

Thanks as always to our amazing patrons and the artists who made our show art and theme song. Special thanks to Naomi Rubin for our amazing new cover art!
