 Today was celebrated as Guru Purnima by devotees of Hindu, Bhuddist, jain and Sikh faiths. Why do we celebrate this day as Vyasa Jayanti ? Why is Vyasa Maharshi important to us? Watch to learn abt about this great teacher.

Why do we celebrate Guru Purnima?

It is a public holiday in Bharat, but hardly anything is taught about it in schools. So, most of us just know that it is an extra day of holiday. Why should some ancient Hrshi's birthday be celebrated by us? Atleast Gandhi and Nehru were in our Independance sttruggle and their birthdays have some relevance to us. But, Veda Vyasa Jayanthi means nothing to the hindu of Bharat.

This is the reason, this day gained more traction as Buddha Purnima, even though we have very few Buddhists in India.

Among some others, the modern version of honouring all teachers as gurus has recently caught up. Like teacher's day, people believe this to be a Bharatiya version of teacher's day. While, honouring teachers is a very integral part of bring a Hindu, is this the original purpose of this day?

So, let us see why we celebrate Guru Purnima.

Hindus, Buddhist, Jains and Sikhs celebrate this festival, as a day dedicated to honouring their Gurus. Hindu Gurus like Shankaracharya, Madhavacharya, Sai Baba, Sri Krishna (because of Bhagavat Gita teaching) are also venerated on this day. Yet, among Hindus this is only known and followed by some persons following certain religious institutions like the Ashrams or Matts for the various Gurus. To the lay person, a Guru is either a teacher or a fake Sanyasi fooling people.

Guru Purnima has still not been understood. Let us clearly look at this day.

The Puranic story from Skanda Purana about Rshi Bronchi’s insult to Parvati Devi, makes one wonder - “What relevance do these out dated stories have for us?” This is the question I wish to explore here.

Most Hindus are familiar with at least a few stories from the Puranas. Of over a hundred Puranas mentioned in ancient texts, the 18 Mahapuranas of Vyas Maharishi are quite popular. The stories within these Puranas talk of Gods, Devas, Asuras and a lot of happenings which are sometimes so fantastic that it looks imaginary. At other times they are very much like happenings in our own life. Most Puranic stories leave us with many questions and don’t seem relevant to our modern life.

This is the 2nd episode on Sanskrit alphabets. The basic consonant form is explained here using the often debated pronunciation of names between the North and South Indian population. While each language has it’s own manner od pronunciations, Samskrta must be pronounced as it was meant to be. Especially when we chant stotras and mantras, we cannot compromise on pronunciations because Sanskrit sounds are used to produce certain vibrations which impact both our bodies and our environment. Balamukundashtakam is about the baby and young child Krshna who simultaneously behave like a child while performing miracles as a God. His birthday is  celebrated by Hindus as Krshna Janmashtami.

The 8 verses of this Stotra tells us how this seemingly innocent baby, who is adorable and also a very mischievous child, is n fact Lord Vishnu incarnated for the benefit of humanity.

These are shlokas commonly chanted before meals in traditional Hindu households. They differ in meaning from the thanks giving prayers of other faiths. Puranas and Symbolism: Many gods are seen vanquishing various asuras. These stories tell us the nature f God in symbolic ways. Examples of this type of symbolsim are seen in every purana. Jupiter also represents the energy of the Supreme ParaBrahman as the Guru- the Jagadguru (teacher of the world), bestower of Wisdom, who incarnates from time to time in order to restore Dharma. This video looks at Tuesday or Mangalvar/ Mangala Vaasara named after the planet mangal or Mars. ‘Mangal’ means auspiciousness and the planet is held as sacred as it is auspiciousness personified. This powerful planet represents qualities like vitality, power, endurance and courage. It is thus dedicated to the worship of many strong deities, of such qualities. These are the 2 deities who are worshipped on Monday. While there is no ban on worshipping any god daily, it is considered beneficial to worship certain Gods on each day of the week. The vibrations of each day have a resonance with the type of deity we meditate upon. 3 shlokas each for Lord Shiva and Ganesha, have been recited 3 times each While 3 is an auspicious number for the repetition of any shloka or mantra, it is also the number the brain recognises as a piece of information worthy of storage for a longer duration. Therefore it aids in memorising the shloka.

I had learnt this stotram very early in life. It has seen me through thick and thin. Easy to learn and very powerful, this stotram chant be chanted at night before sleep or in the morning along with daily prayers or repeatedly on festive days like Shivaratri.

The stream means that the whole of Creation is manifest in the form of this mantra- Om namah shivaya”. It is an Eternal mantra which resonates in space and brings forth the beauty of Creation and all it’s forces and possibilities. It is Ishwara itself, and it can be realised as a shining force within the heart by Yogis. The Vedas too vouch for this sacred mantra and it is the most ancient of them all, says this stotram. Shatpadi- 6 Verses on Sri Vishnu describing Him as the Supreme One Who can bestow on us Eternal Bliss and Moksha.

Srimad Adi Shankaracharya(788-820CE) even though he was a proponent of Advaita philosophy, is famous for his compositions on many deities. He composed this stotra on Sri Vishnu, asking for His help in crossing the Ocean of Samsara. Samsara is the recurring cycle of birth and death and the only way out of this cycle is to attain realisation.This exit requires not only effort from our side, but also the grace of the Supreme Divinity in the form that we approach It, Shiva, Vishnu or Devi.

It is also a stotram which appeals to the Universal Mother to sustain and bestow us with all Her bounty; to grant us good health and form, wealth and success; and to guide us spiritually. It is a powerful stotram which can rid us of all negative influences from the outside worlds as well as rid us of the negative tendencies within us, while enhancing our virtues.
