Client Connection, Retention & the Future of Beauty with Jena Mehlberg
In this episode, Katarina Forster sits down with Jena Mehlberg, a seasoned beauty industry professional and entrepreneur with nearly two decades of hands-on experience.
Jena’s journey in beauty began early. Inspired by her mother, who owned a massage therapy business, she launched her own mobile beauty business at just 19 years old. Over the years, she grew that mobile venture into a successful brick-and-mortar salon, which she owned for eight years before selling it to pursue her next chapter in tech.
Having worked in nearly every role — employee, renter, salon owner, and employer — Jena brings a rare, well-rounded perspective to the conversation. With a degree in Business Management and a passion for blending beauty with business strategy, she has spent the past three years coaching beauty professionals across the country.
In 2024, Jena began building her own CRM platform designed specifically for the beauty industry, aiming to bridge the gap between beauty and technology. Her mission is to create tools that elevate the client experience while empowering beauty pros to grow, streamline, and adapt in a rapidly evolving landscape.
Beyond her work in salons and software, Jena has spoken at conferences nationwide, sharing her expertise on entrepreneurship, women’s empowerment, diversity in beauty, and creating authentic client experiences. She uses her platform to advocate for greater representation industry-wide. Outside of work, she is a proud mom to her son, Hayden, who already mirrors her entrepreneurial drive and love of travel.

Episode Summary: In this raw and empowering episode of Unwritten Beauty Talks, I sit down with Kelsey, the founder of My Skin Dealer, to demystify some of the most in-demand advanced skincare treatments: RF microneedling, lasers, and chemical peels.
Kelsey is not just a provider—she’s a leader and educator in the aesthetic industry, known for her client-centered approach, passion for education, and commitment to building a community of empowered providers. Together, we discuss the science behind combination therapies, how to build deeper trust with clients, and why consultations and aftercare can make or break a treatment’s success.
We also dive into the emotional side of aesthetics: from grief and healing to self-care and redefining beauty. In one of the most honest conversations yet, I share how losing my mom six months ago has shaped the way I lead, treat, and teach. It’s a conversation about technique—but also about heart, energy, and showing up for yourself and others in all seasons.
What We Cover: 💉 What is RF microneedling really doing—and how customizable is it? 📋 Why consultations are the foundation of every successful treatment 🔬 The science of combination therapy (and how to stack safely) 🧬 The role of exosomes in post-treatment healing 🤝 The importance of trust, emotional connection, and realistic timelines 📚 Kelsey’s approach to training her staff and building an online education platform 💬 Why client follow-ups matter more than you think 💫 Redefining beauty as aura—not appearance 💛 The emotional labor of being a provider—and why self-care is non-negotiable 👯♀️ Building a team and a community that uplifts, supports, and grows together
Key Takeaways:
Every treatment plan should be as unique as the client receiving it
RF microneedling is incredibly versatile and best when tailored
Proper aftercare is essential for healing and avoiding complications
Exosomes can enhance recovery and reduce downtime

Educated clients get better results and stay loyal longer
Success in aesthetics isn’t just about outcomes—it’s about connection
Self-care is not a luxury for providers, it’s a requirement
In this episode, Katarina sits down with friend and fellow aesthetician Melissa Rossi to dig into the world of skincare trends vs. results-driven treatments. With over 20 years in the aesthetics industry, Melissa shares her experience moving from day spas to medical aesthetics to finally launching her own studio in Ontario, Canada. Together, they unpack the rise of skincare influencers, TikTok trends, and social media hype — and how these can mislead clients away from true skin health. Topics Covered:
Melissa’s 20+ year skincare journey: from spas to surgery centers to solo studio
Why she finally went solo and the birth of In Skin Studio
The problem with comparing influencer advice vs. aesthetician expertise
Why credentials and experience matter in skin health
The truth about popular skincare trends:
Face taping vs. Botox: does it actually work?
The beef tallow craze: is it the new coconut oil for your face?
At-home microneedling: what you need to know about safety and results
The power of personalization in skincare treatments
Clinical data, ingredient integrity, and real results vs. aesthetics and branding
How estheticians build skin protocols from experience, not viral content
Key Takeaways:
Not all skincare advice is created equal. Just because something worked for one influencer doesn't mean it works for your skin.
Many trends, like face taping or beef tallow, may feel satisfying but lack long-term clinical support — and can do more harm than good.
Professional treatments like microneedling, chemical peels, and customized skincare protocols offer proven results.
A great esthetician doesn’t just look at your skin — they consider your health, habits, and goals to build a plan just for you.

1. **Skin Boosters**: These treatments are ideal for individuals with dehydrated skin or those needing a boost, especially as we age or experience hormonal changes like menopause. Skin boosters work on superficial layers of the skin, providing hydration and refreshing the skin without permanent effects.
2. **Collagen Stimulation**: Treatments like **Sculptra** and **Radiesse** are emphasized for their ability to stimulate collagen, which helps with skin rejuvenation. Melissa explains that while topicals can assist, they aren't as effective as treatments that reach deeper layers of the skin. Collagen-building injectables and devices (e.g., radiofrequency microneedling) are highlighted as long-term solutions.
3. **Radiofrequency Devices**: Devices using radiofrequency (RF) are gaining traction for their skin-tightening and fat-remodeling effects, with minimal downtime. These treatments work by delivering energy to different skin layers to stimulate collagen production and promote tighter, firmer skin.
4. **Exosomes**: Melissa explains how exosomes, derived from stem cells, can accelerate skin healing, reduce inflammation, and stimulate collagen production. These are used in professional treatments like microneedling for enhanced rejuvenation. Exosomes function as a director, orchestrating cellular activities for regeneration.
5. **Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)**: A favorite among professionals, PRF (including the "Plated" version Melissa recommends) works by harnessing the body's own stem cells and growth factors to rejuvenate the skin. It’s applied topically or used in treatments like microneedling for a robust anti-aging effect.
6. **Growth Factors**: While similar to exosomes, growth factors are naturally occurring proteins that support cell growth and tissue repair. They’re used to improve skin healing and collagen production and are included in various skincare products and professional treatments.
7. **Aesthetic Education and Safety**: The conversation wraps with Melissa emphasizing the importance of education in the aesthetic space. She mentions **AestheticsHQ**, a platform designed to help people better understand and select the right treatments, providers, and devices for their specific needs. The platform aims to streamline the process of learning about aesthetic treatments while ensuring safety and personalized care.

🌞 About Arielle Moody
Arielle Moody is a mother, beauty industry veteran, and the founder of Mama Sol, a mineral sunscreen brand created with safety, efficacy, and self-love in mind.
While pregnant with her first child, Arielle was shocked by how many toxic ingredients were hidden in everyday skincare. After testing countless natural sunscreens that left white residue or heavy textures, she set out to create one that felt lightweight, clean, and luxurious — something she’d actually look forward to applying daily.
Before launching Mama Sol, Arielle spent years shaping the beauty industry as a sales trainer for brands like Smashbox, Dr. Perricone, and Bite Beauty, later becoming Head of Product Development for Skinn Cosmetics and Head of Sales for a leading cosmetics formulation company.
