Our relationship with food & body with Rachael Wilson06 Sep 202400:57:51

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matilda chat to Rachael Wilson, a UK-trained registered dietitian and feeding therapist specialising in family feeding, feeding disorders, disordered eating and body image. Rachael’s professional training and background also includes mindfulness and mindful eating, intuitive eating, and she is a highly-trained feeding therapist with the Ellyn Satter Institute. They discuss how to nurture a positive relationship with food and body for our children, as well as learning about healing from our own challenges.

(Trigger warning: This episode covers topics such as disordered eating, body dysmorphia and child feeding conditions.)

They dive deep into the complexities of picky eating, exploring the psychology behind it and offering practical advice for parents struggling with mealtime battles. Rachael explains how to create a relaxed mealtime environment, the importance of offering familiar foods, and why we need to give our children autonomy over their eating.

The conversation also covers the challenges of fostering a positive relationship with food and body image in a world obsessed with diet culture. Rachael emphasises the importance of mindful eating, understanding that food is more than just fuel, and how parents can model positive eating behaviors and attitudes towards their body for their children even when they’ve grown up with unhelpful conditioning, eating and body image issues themselves.

Rachael introduces the concept of feeding disorders like ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and provides insights into the rise of eating disorders among children and adolescents. She offers advice on how parents can spot the early signs of disordered eating and the importance of seeking help early.

This episode is packed with valuable tips and honest discussions that resonate with anyone concerned about their child’s, or their own, relationship with food and body image.

“Why do I smell like an uncooked sausage?”30 Aug 202400:49:56

In this episode of Untidy, after Hannah’s haunted by a lingering leek, Matty and Hannah kick off pondering some awkward culinary curiosities and an exploration of Matty’s food quirks. With recent kitchen renovations, Matty’s shocked to discover she’s not the dynamic person she thought once thought.

After being confronted by her new-found stagnancy, Matty is also adjusting to the reality that her son, Milo, is growing up as he gets ready to start school. The girls talk about handling school transitions and give a hearty plug to Hannah’s ‘My Big Moment’s’ book, ‘Ready for School’ which is helping Matty and Milo prepare for this next milestone.

After that wholesome segment on actual parenting issues, they find another shaky segue onto memories of minor misdemeanours and first crimes from their childhood which they largely, but, not completely, regret.

No more sloppy lasagne05 Jul 202400:49:45

In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah get to sit down in person with Untidy’s behind-the-scenes cat wrangler extraordinaire, Flicka Williams. The girls catch up on how to transition your kids when moving countries without sustaining lasting facial injuries, then loop back to a topic that really lit up the listeners: solving the perfectly layered lasagne. With advice from listeners and a live call to a country mum for the last word on country cooking, they all feel inspired to embark on a ‘lasagne mini-break’ and give it a crack.

Hannah reminisces about producing a turducken (a bird in a bird in a bird in a bird) one Christmas, reveals unmissable pumpkin hacks, then lowers the tone with her next ‘doin’ it for the pod’ modern dating mission.

Preventing social media harm with Michael (Wippa) Wipfli03 Jul 202400:43:36

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matilda are joined by Michael (Wippa) Wipfli, the much-loved Australian radio presenter and co-host of the Fitzy, Wippa & Kate Ritchie breakfast show on Nova 96.9 Sydney. Wippa is the co-founder of 36 Months, a petition to raise the threshold for kids to legally join social media from 13 to 16 years of age in Australia.

Statistics show we are raising ‘the anxious generation’ with young people facing a ‘mental health epidemic’ attributed to the rise in social media usage. Wippa is determined to petition the Australian government to change policy and protect children from social media harm. He maintains that kids need that 36 months between 13 and 16 for crucial brain development to develop a greater sense of self and secure identity before being exposed to the ‘likes’, rankings, and addictive features social media use presents.

Wippa discussed conversations with Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and the leader of the opposition, Peter Dutton, who are verbally supportive of policy change. Matilda and Hannah asked what they could do to support the movement in New Zealand, and the great race to parliament began with a direct message to Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, to make policy changes to give the young people of Aotearoa better mental health outcomes.

Find Wippa’s 36 Months petition here and follow on Instagram  @36months.com.au and @wippa1.

Our Matariki and Māori language with Stacey Morrison26 Jun 202401:02:37

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty have a kōrero with Stacey Morrison (Te Arawa, Ngāi Tahu). A mainstay of broadcasting in Aotearoa New Zealand for three decades, Stacey is also the co-author and author of books to help people on their journey with te reo Māori. As a champion of Māori language, culture and wisdom unique to Aotearoa, Stacey extends the invitation it offers us all to feel stronger about our connection to whenua, to this land.

Stacey did not grow up speaking te reo and had to confront trauma associated with being separated from her native language on her journey to becoming a fluent speaker, translator and teacher. She and her husband, Scotty, have now given the gift of this birthright back to their children by committing to te reo Māori as the first language spoken in their home.

Stacey, Matty and Hannah talk about the unifying opportunities Māori language and wisdom offers the collective culture of Aotearoa and discuss resistance, awkwardness, uncertainty and also enthusiasm associated with this cultural shift through the generations of New Zealanders.

Stacey gives education on Matariki – Māori New Year, and shares how all people can find connection, meaning and celebration by embracing this time.

Follow Stacey on Instagram at @stacedotcom and find her and Scotty’s books in all good book stores.

She and Hannah embrace the age and stage of life where conversations start with a health round-up and Hannah embarks on a body-wide WOF (if she can remember what she’s doing).

The girls answer hard-hitting listener questions and expose the culprit in lasagne crimes, as well as revealing Hannah’s dating pool is in fact, The Bog of Eternal Stench where she shares her struggles to find her sunny pontoon.

Intro to step-parenting and IVF with Rebecca Hyde24 May 202400:52:30

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty talk to Rebecca Hyde to ‘call a spade, a spade’ about the realities of stepping into the role as a step-parent and undertaking an IVF journey to conceive two children as a “geriatric” mother.

After finding a lack of genuine advice as she embarked on these two journeys towards parenthood, Rebecca wanted to lift the lid on conversations that needed to be had by someone who had spent time on these paths. It’s pragmatic, honest, informative – and as always, gloriously Untidy.

A frigate of fish fillets upon you17 May 202400:42:29

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty kick things off with a light rant about the overly emotionally charged occasion that is Mother's Day and share their individual "lulls" (to exercise a euphemism to the core). They wonder if we should all just focus on Easter and we discover that NZ's prime minister is finally seeking wise counsel.

The update we've all been waiting for of Matty's call to Dr Ben Dentist London is delivered and the clock is ticking on a frigate of fish fillets to be deployed by our woman on the ground in England.

The tonic for intolerances with Steph Campbell10 May 202400:42:28

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty talk to Steph Campbell, the founder of Clover Ferments about her incredible story to heal her daughter’s extreme food allergies. Steph was forced to undertake 18 months on a total elimination diet whereby she ate only lamb, leek and green beans to keep her daughter out of hospital who reacted dangerously to any other foods Steph ingested whilst breastfeeding.

This led Steph on a journey to discover a way to heal her daughter with the support of other mums around the world experiencing similar difficulties. Steph started to use an anaerobic fermentation process to produce tonics that miraculously cured Clover’s intolerances within only one month. From this, Steph developed her business ‘Clover Ferments’ and has been able to help people heal their gut issues and resolve many food intolerances and inflammatory skin conditions.

In this conversation, we talk about the ‘juggle struggle’ and what we can do as individuals, organisations, and a society to bring about a revolutionary way of working for parents that respects their family priorities, while also making strong commercial sense for employers.

Dr Ellen Joan Ford is ambitious about changing the working world. And it’s difficult to fault her logic or resist her enthusiasm. There is hope! Ellen helps organisations to improve staff wellbeing, retention, leadership, productivity, innovation and business performance. Her experience is in leadership, as well as gender, well-being and the future of work. She has led troops in the NZ Army, completed an MBA and PhD in leadership, runs her own business, and is raising two little boys. Ellen was awarded the Kiwi Bank New Zealander of the Year 2023 ‘Local Hero’ for coordinating a volunteer team that evacuated 563 people from Afghanistan to New Zealand. She is a force to be reckoned with!

Matilda’s greatest poo story in pod history28 Mar 202400:07:28

What do you get when you combine a dodgy meal, a new relationship, and a coffee in the park? Possibly one of the best poo stories of all time. Matty shares her most (to-date, anyway) embarrassing story, all for the pod. Enjoy!

Sneeze submissions, toilet rumours, and #concernedforkate22 Mar 202401:00:05

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty dip a toe into the alleged conspiracies around Kate Middleton’s disappearance and are #concernedforKate. Having blown Sneeze-gate wide open, they elaborate on this topical issue with ‘in-the-field’ research and share listeners’ story submissions.

It’s high time for more poo news and toilet rumours, so, they reminisce about Matty’s heroic poo story from the good old days and share a couple more as well as a voluntary and unprompted listener’s voice note.

The girls wonder if anyone’s really got it all together, complete with a full sense of inner-earnestness, or if they’re all just pretending to be grown-ups like they seem to be.

Navigating new sexual landscapes with Jo Robertson15 Mar 202401:02:46

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty speak to Jo Robertson – otherwise known as @sextherapistjo on Instagram. Jo is an experienced therapist, specialising in sex and relationships, addiction, betrayal, and trauma. Jo is dedicated to helping our kids grow up with healthy messaging about sex and relationships. She is also the co-founder of 'Makes Sense', an organisation that aims to raise awareness about gaps in our sexual violence prevention approach and digital media regulation in Aotearoa, New Zealand, as well as lobbying for tighter restrictions from the government.

We talk about the juggernaut that is the new porn landscape, and how pornography (often aggressive and violent) is openly accessible to children. We discuss how we are supposed to talk to our kids about what they might see online, as well as protect them from things they can never ‘unsee’.

Jo shares practical tips on how to lay the foundations for tricky conversations with your children from an early age so they don’t seem so daunting when they’re older, as well as tips for parents on how to navigate playdates and sleepovers.

You can find Jo via her website https://www.jorobertson.org/, and on Instagram @sextherapistjo. You can also sign up for her parenting course @trickychatsparenting by visiting the Tricky Chats Parenting website.

Stress on ice, panic stations, and scream sneezers08 Mar 202400:43:25

In this episode of Untidy, Matilda confesses more horrifying prejudices. First fruit, now dogs ... what will she confess next? A secret repulsion for long weekends?? Hannah’s thrown the kitchen sink of resilience at her stress response, and, they discover Matty’s brain is working double-time to ensure the survival of her offspring.

The girls tackle the hard-hitting topic that is scream sneezing, and bring this unacceptable practice into the light for detailed analysis.

Cheap dopamine and the dark angel of dating16 Aug 202400:45:32

In this episode of Untidy, ‘podcast partners’ Matty and Hannah begin to merge completely by turning up in matching jumpers. Matty is the ever-vigilant neighbour sniffing out the cause of suspicious smoke activity in the far-off distance, while Hannah remains completely oblivious to an actual emergency right outside her front door. After that initial housekeeping and checking in on the set homework of the 90s poo, they get to discussing Hannah’s activities as the dark angel of the dating world, sharing the latest horrifying encounters, honest observations of fellow daters, and delivering due consequences to dating swamp monsters haunting the shallows of the ‘Bog of Eternal Stench’. Will Hannah find her sunny pontoon? Or, will this foray just continue to deliver content for the pod?

With a chasm of disconnect between many women wishing to ‘engage the mind before engaging the heart’, versus many men moving directly to, ‘send me a pic’, the girls ponder if we are headed for a greater loneliness epidemic with the dehumanising effects of dating app culture.

Love behind the scenes with Art & Matilda Green23 Feb 202401:14:40

In this episode of Untidy, we go behind the scenes of love with Art and Matty as they open up about their story from beginning with The Bachelor to nine years later having three babies and Buster (licking his bum on the chair at the time of recording).

We talk about how they've evolved through being in relationship, and what it's like being seen as the 'poster children' for #couplegoals, we solve the conundrum of Valentine's Day, discuss the pressure that children have put on their relationship and how they stay solid through this shaky season, and find out how they deal with conflict and resolution. If you've ever wondered what's real behind the reels, now's your chance to hear Art and Matilda open up in a very honest chat about the realities of marriage.

Survive, recover, and thrive with Emma Ferris16 Feb 202401:03:04

In this episode of Untidy we talk to an incredible woman that needs one heck on an introduction, Emma Ferris. Emma is a stress and resilience coach and founder of The Breath Effect whose ‘bring me to my knees moment’ can be heard in nail-biting detail on her podcast, ‘Conning the Con’. She is also the host of her second podcast, ‘The Bravery Academy’.

We kick things off talking about Emma’s separation and divorce story. Although she and her ex-husband were seen as the ‘poster children’ for managing a conscious separation, Emma talks about the realites of the toll that took on her physically, mentally and emotionally, despite having a positive co-parenting relationship to move forward with.

When Emma began dating again she had her ‘trial by fire’ and was targeted for her high empathy by a psychopathic conman who conned her out of a six-figure amount. Emma talks about how she coped in crisis and how she realised she had a choice either to be a victim in that moment, or to learn how to fight. She shares her wisdom for how to survive, recover, and thrive.

Follow Emma on Instagram @thebreatheffect and find out more about her courses, coaching and retreats on her website https://www.thebreatheffect.com/

The resources we talked about in this episode were:

Irks and quirks09 Feb 202400:37:55

In the pettiest episode of Untidy to date, Hannah and Matilda air their irks, quirks, and irrational phobias. There’s airborne orange eaters, wild dogs of Warkworth, bogan bog rolls, and bodily snag hazards. Matilda reminisces on her vegetable revolution and Hannah enjoys the comedic value of the local community Facebook page. Nothing is solved in this episode and personal development loiters in a state of hiatus while the girls just chew the fat (but not the fruit ... and certainly not with eye-contact ...).

The unlucky 2% with Jo Roca05 Jan 202400:45:17

In this episode of Untidy, we talk to Jo Roca, a creative director and working mum of two, for a  raw and candid conversation about navigating the brutality of Hyperemesis Gravidarum during both her pregnancies.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) affects 2% of pregnant women and is a severe type of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that can require hospitalisation and treatment with IV fluids and anti-nausea medication.

Jo gives us an honest insight into what it’s really like living with Hyperemesis Gravidarum in pregnancy. There is very little scientific understanding and social awareness about this condition and Jo takes us through what this harrowing journey is really like from the inside.

As well as talking about the physical, psychological, and emotional impacts of HG, Jo also talks about the impact on her relationships with her husband and first child. She discusses openly what helped, what didn't, how to get through it, and how to support someone you know who is suffering from HG.

Playful psychology with Emily Hanlon08 Dec 202301:08:39

In this episode of Untidy, we talk to Emily Hanlon @theplayfulpsychologist, a child & adolescent clinical psychologist who is all about rethinking our approach to emotions. Emily takes a practical and accessible approach to her work and generously shares her wisdom and humour to her audience online. In this conversation, we wanted to ask every aspect of the age-old parenting questions ... which essentially boils down to wondering if we’re doing it right and if we’re doing enough!

We cover how to know if it’s time to engage a psychologist, how therapy works, highly sensitive kids, living in an anxious world, bringing up kids that like themselves, body positivity and food, balancing play and productivity, building secure attachment, and fussy eaters! There’s a lot more goodness and a whole lot of laughs, too. Emily is real, down-to-earth, and a parent herself. It’s a great conversation!

Mixing rugby and motherhood with Les Elder01 Dec 202300:39:39

In this episode of Untidy we talk to former Black Ferns captain and māmā of two, Les Elder. Les was part of the World Cup winning squad in 2017 and later became captain while trying to start a family at the same time. With both her babies conceived by IVF, the process of conception was complicated whilst meeting the rigorous training schedule as a professional rugby player. Les continued training throughout her first pregnancy and returned to her career soon after giving birth. She experienced dangerous complications during her second pregnancy that resulted in emergency surgery.

Les talks to us about how she handled rising into leadership as women’s rugby in Aotearoa New Zealand became professional. She explains how she juggled starting a family, maintaining a healthy relationship, recovering from pregnancy complications and birth with the pressures of performing at the highest level of rugby and continuing her career in sport.

As a working mother that saw Les spend a lot of time away from her young children, she talks about how this felt and how she and her husband, Johnny, reconcile themselves with the choices they have made as a whanau.

Meeting the inner critic with Mike King24 Nov 202301:38:24

In this episode of Untidy we talk to the iconic Kiwi entertainer, now, mental health advocate Mike King. Mike gives us a warts-and-all account of his evolution from an edgy and turbulent life as a breakthrough comedian, to his life-threatening reckoning that changed his path forever.

Mike is now the founder of I Am Hope Foundation and initiative, Gumboot Friday, which fundraises to provide free and timely counselling for young people across Aotearoa. Mike is not afraid to rattle some cages as he works towards societal change that will positively impact the devastating suicide statistics amongst our rangitahi in New Zealand.

We discuss the inner critic that lives inside of all of us and how this is where anxiety and depression stem. Through being honest about our own experiences, thoughts and feelings, we can parent our tamariki in a way that they understand they are not alone, they are worthwhile, and they are valued to give them a brighter future.

Help Hannah and her team, Tuk Tuk Boom, raise vital funds for Gumboot Friday through their Givealittle page https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/tuk-tuk-boom as they race a tuk tuk around Sri Lanka! And keep an eye out on @untidypodcast for race updates.

Surfing the waves of adolescence with Maggie Dent09 Aug 202401:21:51

In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah talk to the ‘queen of common sense’ parenting educator, Maggie Dent. Maggie is a celebrated author, podcaster, and speaker with a background in teaching, counselling, palliative care, and suicide prevention. Maggie draws from her deep knowledge of neuroscience and her rich experience as a high school teacher and mother of four boys, to share her refreshing, reassuring, and candid perspective on navigating the challenges of parenting through adolescence.

(Trigger warning: In this episode, there is some discussion of self-harm, suicide, sexual assault and exploitation, bullying and cyber-bullying. Please listen with care.)

Maggie’s latest book, ‘Help Me Help My Teen’, is a guide for parents to help their teens when they're struggling with the challenges and increased pressures today’s teens are facing, i.e. vaping, anxiety, sexuality, school grades, self-harm and sexual harassment.

The conversation touches on how to really work alongside your teen through those tumultuous adolescent years. Maggie provides invaluable advice on managing conflict and disappointment without damaging the parent-child relationship. She advocates for maintaining a strong emotional connection as a teen’s ‘safe place’, even in the face of disagreements, to ensure that teenagers always feel supported and understood as they navigate this period of both enormous potential and also enormous risk.

Maggie's insights are not only practical and grounded in reality, but deeply compassionate, to empower listeners to be able to guide their children through these critical years with love, patience, and understanding. This episode is a must-listen!

Follow Maggie Dent on Instagram @maggiedentauthor, register for her popular full-day Calming Today's Anxious Kids conference in Auckland on 14th September, find much more at her website maggiedent.com, and by her books at Mighty Ape, Paper Plus or in audiobook format. You'll be wanting more of Maggie, so luckily, she is also the host of The Good Enough Dad podcast and has hosted six seasons of the award-winning ABC podcast, Parental As Anything.

Prepping for a Positive Birth with Helen Bartrom27 Oct 202300:53:58

In this episode of Untidy we talk to Helen Bartrom from Positive Births. Helen is a Clinical Hypnotherapist, mum of three, and host of The Positive Birth NZ podcast. She is also the author of ‘Positive Birth in New Zealand: using Relaxation, Hypnobirthing and Mindfulness’.

Helen helps women and birthing people feel empowered for their upcoming birth, using hypnobirthing techniques. Matty recently had a session with Helen, so the girls dive into what hypnobirthing actually is, and the common misconceptions around it — i.e., whether it is just a ‘woo-woo’ fad. They discuss the importance of focusing on what you can control in the labour process, and how to let go of the need to control the things you can’t. We delve into the importance of the breath, and how it is used to work with your body to assist the birth process, as well as practical ways your partner can act as a support beam during labour.

The girls also discuss the primal sounds that can occur in birth, why we should embrace the time in a woman’s life where it is socially acceptable to moo like a cow, and why positive birth stories need to be shared far and wide to flip the narrative that childbirth needs to be feared.

Follow Helen on Instagram at @positive_births_nz, and check out her website https://www.positivebirths.co.nz/. Helen does in person sessions as well as online. Helen also does a free Webinar every few months. Find out more via her website.
