Andy and Chad Flewwelling (Host of 518BeatKeepers) sat down to share a beer at Bound by Fate in Schuylerville on the last day of 2023 to discuss the year behind and the year to come. They discuss what is coming for not only their respective podcasts, but with their bands as well. This is the type of episode I have wanted to do for a while. I have always believed that cannabis had an unfair stigma that gave it a "bad rep", so instead of a local musician this week, I sit down with Alison of MB Farms. We talk about how MB Farms was on the first wave of legal cannabis growers in NY state, what is happening now and what the future holds. There is also some "breaking news" about a possible "consumption lounge" in one of our local cities. So, get to know Alison, MB Farms and get a peek behind the curtain of legal cannabis in NY on episode 106 of Unsigned518.  

It was really cool to get to talk to Sara and Dave of Elephant Back. Not only are they very cool and friendly people, but very talented with a  lot of interesting stories as well. Including when they went to Lndon to play a gig and record at Abbey Road studios. They were even told by someone very close to John Lennon that John "would have loved them". Luminous Crush are from just across the border in VT, near my hometown and it turns out we had several mutual friends and connections, but had never crossed paths before this episode. Luminous Crush are a duo that simply cannot be categorized into one genre. They both have amazing musical ranges and an impressive output of wholly original music. Get to know Bay and Laura of Luminous Crush on episode 104 of Unsigned518.  

I sat down with Jackie of Nikki Brown and the Well Diggers and Sound Talent Group for a very interesting conversation about not only Jackie's role as drummer in Nikki Brown and the Well Diggers (whom I mistakenly refer to as "The Nikki Brown Band" several times throughout the episode. Sorry.) but also her day-job with Sound Talent Group. We talked all about what it takes to put a tour together for national and international acts and I learned so much about what goes on behind the scenes. I think you will really enjoy this conversation with Jackie on episode 103 of Unsigned518  

On this episode of Unsigned518, I sit down with Natalie and Andy of Little Saints. We talk about the creative process behind their songwriting and go into how their personal lives and day jobs help create the immersive storytelling in their music. We talk about how Natalie and Andy both encourage and inspire each other and we talk about the other 518 all-stars that round out the Little Saints. They also play us a couple of songs off the new ep. Get to know Little Saints on episode 102 of Unsigned518

Episode 100. It is hard to comprehend that I have put together 100 episodes, but here we are.    When I realized that this weeks episode would be number 100, I thought it was only right to circle back to my very first guest on Unsigned518, Mikey Baish.    While MIkey is primarily known as the frontman of local favorites, The Sugar Hold, he is also a key figure at Jive Hive Live. This episode he is on representing the Hive and we even recorded it at Jive Hive Live, which is where episode one was recorded.   Anyway, enough talk. Check out episode 100 and find out not only what has happened in the last couple of years, but also about what is coming in the near future.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a lifelong punk-rock fan, so The Hauntings have been on my radar for a while and it was really cool to finally have them on the show. We talk about their early days in other bands and how the Hauntings finally came together. We also get insight into how The Hauntings write and record their records.Then we play two songs off of their brand new EP. So, check out episode 99 of Unsigned518 with The Hauntings.

On this episode, I sit down with Nick Kossor, Horror aficionado and guitarist for kickass 518 rockers, Gozer. We discuss some horror movies filmed in the area and deep dive into the Gozer song, My Design, which has nearly a dozen horror-movie references in the lyrics. 

I also head up to Palangi Studios to talk to local musician and filmmaker, Frank Palangi, who has two horror movie anthologies available to view on streaming platforms. We talk about the process of making horror films and doing it 100% DIY. We also play Frank's interpretation of the classic John Carpenter theme to Halloween.

Then, I go back to the Dazzle Den to finish out the episode by playing some cool 518 tunes that have a Halloween vibe. So, Ghouls and Ghosts, listen to the Unsigned518 Halloween Special. Just don't do it alone. 

TV Doctors have been shooting to the top of must-see bands in the 518 in the last few years and in this episode I had the pleasure to sit down with the Docs and get some insight into their successes and get to hear the history of the band. Including where the name came from. Check out the TV DOctors on episode 98 of Unsigned518.  

The first time I saw Turf 'N' Turf play, I was immediately impressed with the set up and execution of  Turf 'N' Turf and The Noise Machine. It was loud, brash and nearly everything you could ask from a rock-n-roll show. Plus, there were bones and cymbals being punched.    If you are not familiar with Turf 'N' Turf and/or The Noise Machine, it is a little hard to describe. It is chaos and creativity in a cage. Turf 'N' Turf is a one-man outfit and I recently had a chance to sit down with Snail, the aforementioned one-man. Listen to how Turf 'N' Turf went from an idea to a reality. You can hear about it on this episode, but I highly suggest that you check out Turf 'N' Turf for yourself.

Carm is an absolute shredder on guitar, But not only that, he is someone who decided early to forge his own path and that path kicks ass, We talk about his early inspirations and influences and play a couple different track to highlight his diversity, Check out Carm Grasso and Grasso Sardella and get to know Carm a bit better on episode 96 of Unsigned518.  

From the first moments of this episode, I knew it was going to be something extra cool. Mr Every Day is a dynamic, engaging, and infectiously positive individual. His story is one of the most interesting that I have told on this show. I honestly don't want to give anything away, but rather have you dig into Episode 95 with the man, the myth, the legend... Mr Every Day.  

Ahead of their show with the Nolanauts and Erin Harkes (Cohoes Music Hall, Oct 7th), The Sugar Hold made a stop at the Dazzle Den, to do some catching up. In true Sugar Hold fashion, we had a couple of beers before we got rolling, so this episode will prove to be extra-entertaining. We also learn that The Sugar Hold have their own Tremolo pedal coming out from Poison Noises and have been working on a Halloween special with Jive Hive Live. If you are even tangentially aware of the 518 music scene, then you know who Josh Morris is. If not, here is your opportunity to get to know him. His first single under his own name, "Ready For Your Love", has gained international accolades and even charted on the BBC!    That is an amazing achievement and if you have heard the song, you'll quickly realize why it has done so well. In this episode, not only do we hear about Josh's lifelong relationship with music, but we also have his second single "When The Night Is Over" to play for you, ahead of its release date!    I am very excited for you to hear this episode and get a sneak peek at Josh's new single, which is sure to do as well, or better, than his first.

In the last five or so years, Reese Fulmer has built quite an impressive musical resume. His songwriting and delivery are, in my opinion, on par with national acts. His Carriage House Band is composed of some of the absolute top musicians in the area and he keeps that impressive cast rotating. So, while you may not know who will be in the Carriage House Band when you see them, you can be assured they will be of the very best.    Reese not only plays us a track from his live album, but also performs a song live on the episode that left me in awe.

B. Austin has been crushing it lately. From winning awards, to having streaming numbers that transcend just the local scene. In this episode, we go into where B. Austin developed and honed his love of music as well as find out what current and upcoming projects are in his future. Get to know B. Austin on Episode 91 of Unsigned518.

This was such a cool episode to record. If you didn't know, Jordan and Poison Noises make guitar pedals and are very well known for the quality and craftsmanship of their products. Not only that, but recently, they have been teaming up with some 518 bands and helping them create their own signature pedals. Not only is Jordan's artistry top-notch, but his integrity is, too. He helps keep things within the grasp of the local bands, which are usually only reserved for the big national acts- although they certainly do make pedals for them as well. 

Get to know Jordan and Poison Noises on this episode of Unsigned518, where we will also play a couple of tunes from some local bands that have their own Poison Noises pedal in their gear set-up—the E-Block and Halo Bite.

This episode was recorded just days before BCBB's blistering set at Nipperfest and I got the chance to sit down with Josh and Tex to discuss the history of the Bad Boys and how everything fell into place. It involves a pretty dramatic story with pounds of weed, the police and a not small amount of jail time. There the idea of the Brule County Bad Boys began. In a cell in, you guessed it, Brule county.   But you don't want to hear it from me, so let the boys themselves tell you the story on episode 85 of Unsigned518 with Brule County Bad Boys.

I became friends with Ben long before this podcast existed and when ShortWave RadioBand was still a semi-acoustic duo playing cover tunes in the corner of local taprooms. Ben and his bandmates in Under The Den (Jay-No, Solo and Madison) were very supportive of us when we added John, Abby and Ryan and decided to make a go at original music. So much so that we call them and two (of the many) other bands that helped us fly in our early days (The Sugar Hold and E.R.I.E) out by name in our soon-to-be-released single "Along The Way".   This episode was recorded just days before it was announced that Ben was stepping away from his duties in Under The Den for the foreseeable future, but I certainly already had that knowledge when I pressed record. For that reason, we do not talk about his leaving the band, but instead focus on what he will be doing as a solo artist going forward.    Ben also performs two original songs live in-studio.   My love for Ben and every single member of Under The Den is no secret and I know that both outfits will thrive in the 518 and beyond. In the meantime, hear about what Ben will be up to going forward on episode 88 of Unsigned518.

This is technically the second time Man Must Explore has been on Unsigned518, but the last time they were on, they were a different band. Quite literally. A couple of members of the previous lineup of MME went on to form other local favorites, Flat Wounds. MME added a couple of new members and this lineup was solidified. Ryan and I have crossed paths several times in the last year or so, and he even sang the bridge to the ShortWave RadioBand song 'Dont Care' when we played it at a show last fall and appeared in our music video for 'So Long, THe Hopeful'. So MME are not only personal friends, but friends of this podcast and ShortWave RadioBand. I'm excited for you to catch up with what is new with Man Must Explore on episode 90 of Unsigned518.  

My point is, Tops of Trees are too diverse to be put into one box. It is evident in the well crafted songs that there are many musical influences that go into making their tunes. But it is more difficult as you listen, to pin down those influences because the songs are wholly original. The guys in the band were also a very welcome presence in the Dazzle Den, and I feel like we fairly instantly bonded and became pals. I even invited them to participate in a special show that I have coming up this winter. But, more on that later, right now check out episode 86 with Tops of Trees.  

It's just me this week as I talk about just a few of the many highlights of Nipperfest '23. I will keep the talking brief, but will just tell you a little bit about a few of the many highlights for me, and then I will play a song from the artist that the highlight relates to. I've known iRod for several months, but was familiar with him long before we personally knew each other. iRod is a very talented dude, who can front a band, do solo acoustic shows, DJ as DJ iRod and do his own music with iRod + Aux. His live show is something to behold and the accompanying visuals really elevate the whole experience. iRod is working on a new album and on this episode we will play 2 tracks from it, including a first listen at the upcoming single "Dreaming of You". Dave has been around the 518 for a while now. You may know him from The Blisterz or his outfit Watch Reggie Run, kids' music that adults can enjoy. Dave's newest venture, Dave Graham and the Disaster Plan, is releasing original music and just put out an album of 518 covers called "Appreciate the 518". On those covers were songs from Black Cat Elliot, E.R.I.E., and my band, ShortWave RadioBand. We talk about how that came about and Dave's hyper-enthusiasm for local music. It's a really great conversation with a cool and talented dude. Get to know Dave Graham and the Disaster Plan on episode 83 of Unsigned518.  

Not only have I known Dave and John for years, but they are also the ones who crafted the super-sweet theme song that you will hear at the beginning of the episode. They are also both great guys. Dave has appeared on the episode a couple of times and John and I had recorded an earlier episode that, for several reasons, never aired. John and Dave now make music under the moniker simplemachine and many of you are probably familiar with their first singles "Unbroken" and "Ingloria". We go into their songwriting process and even hear an early demo of Unbroken before playing the song. We also play the first simplemachine song featuring John on lead vocals called "Unenlightened". Kristian's story is an interesting one for sure. After making a name for himself in the Boston music scene, life steered him in a different direction and he took an 18 year hiatus from music. A few years ago he dove right back in with a unique and infectious sound that was all his own. He has put out several full length albums of originals in just a few years and has another one, produced by Andrew Koss, coming out later this year. On this episode Kristian plays a song off the new album, live in the Dazzle Den and plays an as-yet-unreleased studio track off the upcoming album. So, get familiar with Kristian Montgomery and the Winterkill Band on episode 81 of Unsigned518.  

Niki has been writing her own songs for decades and has such a penchant for songwriting that she will sometimes drive her car with no radio on and compose melodies in her head. Her songwriting seems to know no bounds as she will write about things that she sees, experiences and feels. Her songs are as unique and free spirited as Niki herself. She not only talks about her love of music and her process, but also plays a couple songs live in the Dazzle Den. Check out Niki Kaos on episode 80 of Unsigned518.

Brian is a true punker, in my opinion. He lives it and breathes it. He is in Death Cult Pharmaceutical as well as Lex Naturalis, his solo project, But not only does Brian make his own music, he is very instrumental in helping the music scene in general. He has been putting together band showcases at local venues, including one where my band ShortWave RadioBand played at and his passion and enthusiasm helps him have successful gigs, So, check out Brian Cirillo on Episode 79 of Unsigned518.  

Kristina has been making and performing music for most of her life. She has already done so much professionally that I would not be surprised if she became not only nationally known, but internationally as well. Her tightly crafted songs will get into your head quickly, with the only way to get them out, being to listen to them on repeat. I found myself humming the tunes for days after our conversation. I had been familiar with Camtron 5000 for a little bit and like a lot of my guests, it took a little bit for our schedules to align. I finally had a chance to meet Camtron at the Eddies and a few weeks later he was on my show. Get to know the origin story of this unique individual, who has a seemingly endless supply of song ideas and styles. We talk about how he got started and how it has led to Camtron 5000 getting a spot on Alive at 5's Hip-Hop night, opening for the legendary Rakim, to him being a featured artist at this year's Nipperfest. I recently sat down with Aaron of The Snorts after playing a show with them at The Fuze Box. The Snorts play fast punk songs that have an "aggressive positivity" to them and I convinced Aaron to play a few of them in the Dazzle Den with an acoustic guitar. So, meet Aaron, familiarize yourself with The Snorts and check out the little acoustic mini-concert that rounds out this episode. 

Up and coming 518 hip-hop artist, Cir Red stopped by the Dazzle Den recently and we talked about how he got started in the music game and where he expects it to take him. He has recorded and collaborated with some pretty big names and I think you will be hearing his name on the National level soon. Theresa is the taproom manager of SingleCut North and while not a musician herself, has done a lot to help promote and grow the 518 music scene. This was a really cool episode for me to record. I have been a fan of the band since long before the podcast, so to have them over to the Dazzle Den for a couple of beers and a good conversation was a cool milestone for me. This also clocks in at one of the longest Unsigned518 episodes, at an even hour. We just had so much fun and had so much to talk about.  Lucid Street has been making a name for themselves in the last year and has recently been picking up major steam. They placed in the Elite Eight in Nippertowns March Music Madness and have been booking an increasingly busy show schedule. Welcome to the Unsigned Unwind. This show is an attempt to gather great local music from all over the US and Canada, have a brief conversation with the band/musician and play one of their songs. My goal is that local-music enthusiasts, such as myself, can discover great local music that otherwise may have remained hidden to them. Ultimately, I would love to have local bands from different areas not only get to know each others music, but play shows together and really build a community. 

This show is all about discovery. Not just yours, as a listener, but mine as well. The way the show operates is our showrunner, Angela Tourangeau schedules guests for me to talk to. I am not given any information about who I will be speaking with beforehand, just a name and a phone number. This way, as I find out where they are from, what their bands name is, what kind of music they play, influences, etc, you will be finding out right along with me.

I had heard of At Lights Wake from my good friend Dave Tyo, who is producing their music, He told me that they were really nice guys, who played brutally heavy music. He was not wrong on either account. Having been a band for only about a year, At Lights Wake;s first couple singles really made an impact. There is more music on the way and I expect a ton of great stuff from this band. So, check out At Lights Wake on Episode 71 of Unsigned518.  

I met House of Saturn at the Jive Hive when this podcast was only 1 or 2 episodes old. We talked about having them on the show then, but it took until now to make it happen, so I am extra psyched about this one. They are so talented and adept at making music, but like a lot of the folks I have met through the Hive, they are also really, truly wonderful people. So if you are unfamiliar with the House of Saturn, get ready to meet this amazing band.

When my band, ShortWave RadioBand was first playing out as our solidified five-piece lineup, Twilight Drive were one of the first bands that we played with. It was at the Troy Speakeasy and let's just say that there were not a lot of people out that night. Like none. So our bands basically performed for each other and we had a lot of time to get to know each other and we became fast friends. Also, Darryl of Twilight Drive was the very first guest I recorded on Unsigned518. So it was really cool to finally have another member of Twilight Drive on the show. Twilight Drive is a 3-piece that sounds like a 7-piece or more. Very layered, driving sounds with all 3 members doing at least 2 different things at a time. Really an interesting band and very friendly dudes. I'm happy for you to hear about Twilight Drive, if you are not familiar. They are about to make a splash in the 518, I can feel it.
