The Secret Causes Of A Hockey Player's Aches & Pains25 Sep 202400:39:24

On this episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I take some inspiration from a question I got from an athletic trainer who is taking my free mini-course, The Missing Link.  Her question was regarding how the SI joint may be affected in hockey players due to various reasons including skating, shooting the puck, and their general playing position.  In this episode, you’ll hear me break down how I think about how a hockey player’s dynamic posture and movement affect the visceral and neurovascular structures, which could ultimately be the main driver of their pain complaints.

Easily Restore Knee Flexion After Injury or Surgery11 Sep 202400:54:30

This week on the Unreal Results Podcast, I dive deep into the complexities of restoring knee flexion following an injury or surgery.  This is a topic that I know all too well as I spent many days in PT having my knee forced into flexion and well, I still don’t have full knee flexion.  In this episode, I talk about some of my favorite techniques that don’t require you to force your patient into tears to help them achieve full knee flexion.  You’ll hear me discuss some of my favorite approaches including the “standard” hands-on techniques with the typical biomechanical lens of view.  But you know it wouldn’t be an Unreal Results episode if I didn’t talk about the holistic side of things including how specific visceral and neural influences can affect the knee as well as the importance of hydration.  This is a can’t miss episode for all of my healthcare providers who want to help their patients with treatment techniques that stick from session to session without endlessly repeating them every session.

The Controversy Of The Gillet SI Joint Test04 Sep 202400:49:32

This week on the Unreal Results podcast, I talk about one of my favorite topics - the Gillet SI joint test.  Gillet’s test or sometimes known as the March test or Stork test, is typically known for having poor reliability based on previous research.  If you’ve been following along for some time, you probably know that said research likes to get thrown around by the EBP police when I make posts on social media.  But the often overlooked part of these research studies is that they have lots of flaws and limitations.  Make sure you tune into this episode as I break down why the studies on the Gillet test aren’t the best and why I think the SI joint is innately difficult to assess with only one test.

The Hidden Signs: Detecting Red Flags & Visceral Referrals28 Aug 202400:51:14

In this week’s episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I talk about recognizing and responding to red flags in patient care.  First and foremost, this topic is important to me because this is what happened with my mom’s cancer diagnosis, which I talked all about in episode 1 of this podcast. I talk about how it’s important to recognize when a patient’s condition isn’t progressing as expected and the need to consider possible underlying visceral issues or red flags such as cancer or infection.  You’ll also hear me talk about the importance of referring your patient to a specialist and how to do that appropriately to ensure comprehensive care for the patient.  This is a must listen episode for my physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other essential sports healthcare providers.

Movement Compensations Are Not The Problem14 Aug 202400:40:16

Welcome back to the Unreal Results Podcast!  After a little summer hiatus, I’m back to recording new weekly episodes.  In this particular episode, I talk about what I’ve been up to these past 6 weeks including working with one of my closest athletes, my birthday celebrations, and some personal health issues.  But the main topic for today’s episode revolves around the body’s compensation mechanisms and how healthcare & movement providers should not fixate on them.  You’ll hear why I believe compensations are actually great for the body, but more importantly how utilizing the LTAP™ for an individualized assessment is way more important for the treatment you provide, whether it’s to address the compensation or not.

This week on the Unreal Results podcast, I’m taking a clip from episode 33, Assessment Is Sexy, to highlight the importance of a good assessment.  This was originally a guest episode featuring my friend, teammate, and colleague, Lex Lancaster, where we talk about treating her chronic shoulder pain.  I of course highlight the use of the LTAP™ (Locator Test Assessment Protocol) as the basis of any comprehensive assessment to help guide you where the body exhibits any protection patterns.  In this case study, you'll hear how targeting the liver and nervous system dramatically improved her shoulder pain and mobility.

How The Trigeminal Nerve Could Supercharge Your Practice17 Jul 202400:22:40

For this week’s episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I’m throwing it back to episode 28, The Power of the Trigeminal Nerve.  This is legitimately one of my favorite episodes, which yes, I know I say that a lot, but what I talk about in this clip can be tremendously helpful for your practice if you don’t know this information.  In this episode, I talk about how the trigeminal nerve is more than just a sensory nerve to portions of the face and innervates the masseter, but also its role in the parasympathetic nervous system.  I break down the anatomy of the trigeminal nerve and relate that to cranial and spinal nerves, headaches, and nervous system tension throughout the body.  I truly believe that this information could truly improve the outcomes that you get with your patients.

Why Your Shoulder Treatments Might Not Be Enough10 Jul 202400:17:30

In this week’s episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I revisit episode 16, Why The Shoulder Comes Last.  Part of the reason why has to do with a story regarding my sister who has been dealing with chronic shoulder pain, which resolved immediately following a treatment that wasn’t for her shoulder.  But in this episode, you’ll hear me challenge the traditional approach of treating the shoulder by first understanding the surprising connections & influences of shoulder pain from the nerves and visceral organs.

Rethinking Mobility and Stretching03 Jul 202400:15:59

In this episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I am taking a clip all the way back from season 1 episode 12, Rest Postures vs. Mobility vs. Stretching.  In this specific episode, I highlight insights from Philip Beach’s work that emphasizes floor-based rest postures along with sensory input can improve overall function and mobility. I also talk about the value of making rest postures feel genuinely restful through the use of props, thus facilitating increased mobility without the discomfort often associated with traditional stretching. I hope as fellow healthcare practitioners, you’re encouraged to consider how safety and sensory input play a crucial role in effective movement therapy and rehab.

Ego-Free Healing: Learning A New Paradigm In Patient Care19 Jun 202400:34:27

In this week’s episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I reflect on the LTAP Level 1 course that I taught in Washington, D.C. this past weekend. If you didn’t know, the LTAP is a paradigm assessment that I created over my 20 years of practice that helps you shift your focus from more of a traditional orthopedic approach to a whole-organism approach.  In the episode, I go over the course structure and breakdown, the importance of feeling versus thinking during assessments & treatments, and the paradigm shift you truly need to help you get the best results for your clients.  I hope you enjoy this episode and join me in one of the upcoming in-person LTAP courses!

Liver Love12 Jun 202400:51:04

In this week's episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I explore the anatomy and physiology of the liver and how it is an integral area of the body to treat to support overall health and wellness.

A key organ especially for swelling and the lymphatic system as well as a driver for many musculoskeletal issues including right shoulder pain,   neck pain, hip pain, and left-sided sciatica. I discuss the relative anatomy and how that relates to the mobility of the organ itself and the musculoskeletal system.

In addition, I break down the programming of the "Lymph Love" Regen Session which is very liver focused. Taking you through my thought process and why being precise and specific with movement interventions can be a difference-maker in treatment outcomes.

Diaphragm Details That Unlock Thoracic Mobility04 Dec 202400:56:09

In this week’s episode of the Unreal Results Podcast, I talk about the often-overlooked role of the diaphragm.  I bring this topic up because I see it often in my NFL athletes around this point in their season and how diaphragm stiffness starts to affect their performance. In the episode, you’ll hear me talk about diaphragm anatomy and function, how stiffness of the diaphragm can lead to limited thoracic mobility and pain, and give you practical exercises that I use with my athletes to improve their diaphragm mobility.  Regardless if you work with athletes or not, this episode can give you a lot of insight on understanding and treating the diaphragm if you think it’s contributing to your client’s thoracic spine or T6 costovertebral joint pain.

Periods & ACL Tears: Must Know Info To Reduce Injury15 May 202400:35:49

In this episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I’m talking about a topic that’s been on my mind as of late: the connection between the menstrual cycle and ACL tears. First & foremost, I truly believe that everyone, including non-healthcare providers & men, should understand the menstrual cycle and how it affects the body’s hormones.  I challenge the general assumptions made about ligament laxity and when ligamentous injuries frequently occur by analyzing what’s actually happening during the menstrual cycle.  I also talk about ALL of the ways that female athletes can reduce their risk of ACL tears and other ligamentous injuries.  I hope that you’re able to have some excellent takeaways from this episode and share them with anyone that has a female in their life!

REPLAY: Results Cheat Code- The Missing Link [Kick-Off Call!]15 Apr 202401:45:02

This is a replay of the kick off call to the Results Cheat Code- The Missing Link Mini-Course.

One of the things I hear from sports healthcare professionals is that in their day to day, theylack the confidence to guarantee results for their clients.

What most sports healthcare professionals miss is the ability to trust the wisdom of the body and be able to listen to it to guide the treatment sequencing. When you know where to start by listening to the body you will get fast results that stick using any tool or treatment approach you like. Getting consistent results like that will improve your confidence and have you feeling inspired by every client's session, even the most complicated clients, without having to learn ANOTHER treatment system.

The Results Cheat Code is rooted in the beliefs that the patient’s body knows best, the SI joint connects everything, AND where you start matters.

In this course, you will learn how to use a foundational orthopedic test that assesses SI joint mobility and “asks the body” the 1st of 3 important questions: “Is there something you are protecting?” Asking the body simply means performing a manual assessment and allowing the results to guide treatment.

The SI joint is unique in that it has a direct connection to everything- visceral organs, the central nervous system, the myofascial system, and the peripheral nervous system. This makes it a PERFECT joint to use for a full- truly whole-body assessment. And perhaps this is the reason why SI joint dysfunction is so common yet not always easily treated. The Results Cheat Code will provide you with a new lens of view on an old assessment that will not only make dealing with SI joint issues easy but allow you to see how it influences all aches, pains, and injuries you encounter.

Based on the results of the assessment the body directs you to know if the SI joint mobility is being affected by the visceral organs, the central nervous system, or the musculoskeletal thus allowing you to know EXACTLY where to start treatment because when you know exactly where to start treatment you will get better results so you can-

  • spend less time repeating treatment techniques
  • require fewer treatment sessions
  • have happy clients
  • gain confidence that you guarantee results and can help anyone

A Different Way To Treat Achilles Pain - Track Athlete Case Study03 Apr 202400:33:53

Where do I start treatment for an athlete complaining of Achilles tendon issues?  The same place I start every evaluation - the LTAP (locator test assessment protocol). This directs me to where the body is protecting and what the underlying driver of changing the dynamic alignment, function, and pain is.  I still look at the movement and orthopedics of what was going on and likely stressed the tissue - but the story of something being “tight”, “weak”, or “inhibited” is gone. I talk about all of this and more including my entire breakdown of a recent case I had of a track athlete complaining of Achilles pain.

The Elbow Episode28 Feb 202400:24:10

In this episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I explore the various challenges of treating elbow pain, using a specific case study with one of my throwing athletes.  As always, I emphasize using a holistic assessment that considers visceral and central nervous system influences rather than just focusing solely on any dysfunction located at the elbow joint.  I firmly believe by using this approach you will have more effective and lasting results by aligning treatment with the body's protective patterns and shifting patients into a parasympathetic state.

Small Intestine and Mesenteric Roots14 Feb 202400:28:30

In this episode of the Unreal Results Podcast, I talk about the Mesenteric Roots of the small intestines and their significance in cases of low back pain.  I dive into the anatomy and function of the mesenteric root, including its relationship with the duodenal jejunal flexure and the ligament of Treitz. I also talk about the reflexive connections between the mesenteric root, blood flow, lymphatic flow, and nervous system tension.  Lastly, I provides some insights to treating the Mesenteric Roots, including spinal mobilization and mobilizing the route itself with the use of soft massage tools, such as the coregeous ball.

Using the LTAP with Post Surgical Rehab31 Jan 202400:31:58

In this episode, I share how the LTAP (locator test assessment protocol) and MovementREV lens of view, incorporating the whole organism (visceral, neural, and musculoskeletal systems) guides post-surgical rehab.

From swelling, range of motion, and exercises to manual therapy and facilitating safety and the parasympathetic nervous system, I share my approach to an ACL rehab in a true whole organism approach to care, one that meets the body where it is at and honors the body's innate wisdom and ability to heal.

The Kidneys- Visceral Connections to Movement24 Jan 202400:40:00

Join me for a deep dive into the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys.

Explore how the kidneys are deeply embedded into our movement and humans and how closely the organs are related to the spine and extremities.

In this episode you will learn why I am so adamant about not using hard massage tools or deep tissue to the area of the kidneys and why you may want to consider the kidneys when dealing with knee, back, and foot pain.

Using Weight Shifting to Improve Movement Patterns17 Jan 202400:41:21

In this episode of the Unreal Results podcast, I share how powerful understanding and cueing weight shifting can be to instantly improve dynamic alignment, reflexive core stability, and overall movement performance.

I share how important understanding fascial tensegrity and sensory integration is in motor development and how when you appreciate the whole organism vs. biomechanics coupled and combined movements is what creates efficient movement patterns not a billion CARs (controlled articular rotations) and bracing the core to prevent movement.

I share exactly how to cue weight shifts during all directions of movement and bases of support. This will be a super practical episode so get ready to try it out in your own body or on your clients!

Becoming the Best at What You Do10 Jan 202400:50:44

Inspired by the trend on social media I share what my professional development plan would be if I was starting over in my career, fresh out of college.

There are some big missing pieces in the industry as far as movement science and bridging the gap between rehab and performance that would be the focus as well as learning about a more whole organism lens of view earlier including the viscera, nervous system, and neurology.

I reflect on the 20+ years of continuing education and professional development I have taken and pull out some of the highlights and still solid education that I pull from years later.

I also emphasize the important role mentorship plays in the integration and assimilation of information and the art or creativity that patient care requires.

The Pink Eye Chronicles27 Nov 202400:24:55

It’s been a little while, but I’m back for another episode of the Unreal Results podcast, where this week, you’ll hear me chronicle my viral pink eye infection.  If you follow me on social media, you probably already know that I’ve been dealing with viral pink eye, in both eyes nonetheless, for 19 days as of recording this episode.  But to me, it feels like it’s been eleventy-billion days.  Either way, in this episode, you’ll hear all about how I’ve been dealing with this virus, the different types of pink eye, and a quick mention of one of the biggest sales I do each year for my online products.

The Fundamental Attribution Error and Why You May be the Problem, Not Your Client20 Dec 202300:53:50

I recently posted a thread about the tendency toward settling for mediocrity in our profession. This is actually exactly what keeps us from feeling confident in not only guaranteeing results for our clients but also referring them to other practitioners or back to the doctor for red flags, and advocating for different answers.

You can get caught up in saying things like:
"Some people just don't get better"

"It takes time"

"You can't help everyone"

"Pain is complex"

"You can't fix things overnight"

"The patient doesn't do their HEP"

"The patient doesn't manage their stress"

"You will have to live with some degree of pain or limited function because the tissue has changed forever"

But in reality, it DOES NOT take weeks and or months to solve their problems, and these beliefs all stem from average or below average (mediocre) results.

In this episode, I unpack what I mean when I say I can guarantee results in 1-3 sessions. Why you need to be able to guarantee results too and how when we make judgments on our patients we often fall into to a psychological tendency called the fundamental attribution law.

3 Powerful Nerves13 Dec 202300:45:44

In this episode, I share why I believe these 3 nerves are so powerful to target for manual therapy, nerve glides, or movement drills. The 3 nerves are the trigeminal nerve, the accessory nerve, and the obturator nerve.

I break down the connections to the fascial containers of our axial skeleton and the role they play in viscera and neural influences on the body, why they are easy to target, and why spinal articulation can also be a powerful tool to combine with these nerve glides and targeted treatment.

During this episode, I also share about recently learning that the pelvic splanchnic nerves, which have been classified as parasympathetic for decades, in fact, are not! So what does this mean for us and our understanding of the ANS? Listen to hear my thoughts on it.

Healing and Wellness: Remade06 Dec 202301:05:37

"Your body is your best friend." parting words from my friend and colleague Daniela Spear. Many people have a hard time both feeling and understanding this, especially those people who have autoimmune diseases. Often in the Western medicine community when someone is diagnosed with an autoimmune disease they are given the explanation that their body is "attacking" itself. It is easy to then understand why it does not resonate with best friend vibes.

Daniela was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease when she was 15 years old and through learning about health and wellness and performance from her previous job as a strength (performance) coach at EXOS and through the MovementREV education realized that she was under-recovered and under-rested, which is different than the traditional concepts of over trained and overstressed.

While practicing various methods of movement that supported rest and diving into how emotions played a role in her diagnosis and capacity to heal she learned how her symptoms were not something wrong with her, but ways her body was working for her, and responding to the information it was being provided.

Join me as Daniela shares her journey of healing from autoimmune disease and getting a second chance at a life not only free from medication but truly feeling in EASE with life after dis-ease.

We talk about the power of words, belief systems, the role her liver and liver-focused movement played in her healing, and how she can now offer support to others ready to be remade too.

C-Sections, Back Pain, and Scars22 Nov 202300:49:13

In this episode I share how the understanding of Phillip Beach's contractile field theory of movement provides new context for c-sections and back pain.

I also discuss the anatomical connections of the uterus and ovaries to the hard frame of the skeleton, the role the scar and the loss of cutaneous sensation may play in back pain and recovery.

In addition I share my go to approach on how to assess and treat any scar with manual therapy and inhibition testing.
