Pee-wee's Big Adventure & A League of Their Own | Podcast FINALE | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review21 Sep 202503:16:23

Well folks, the end was nigh and now it's here.

What a fun ride this has been. Whether you're just now watching or listening to us, been with us since the beginning (whoa, hell yeah, btw), we wanted to say THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for even wasting your time on our silly little podcast. If nothing else, this is a great time capsule to a very special time in human history, and expertly catalogues the growing friendship between two people.

With this finale episode, we swung big and decided to talk about two movies: "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and "A League of Their Own". While on the surface, their differences could not be more starkly apparent, there is one clear connection that eagle-eyed watchers of both films will know. We took that as a clear signal from the eons of time immemorial that we chose the correct two films to discuss, and that this was indeed the proper time to close this chapter of our lives.

So take care of each other, show your favorite people your favorite things, and nerd out together. Also, it goes without saying: fuckicefreepalestinereleasetheepsteinlistandFDT.

The Prince of Egypt | Old Testament Get MCU-ified | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review13 Sep 202501:16:30

Jesus Christ, it's Moses.

We're getting biblical, folks! Strap in for a look into Joe's pick from his childhood, "The Prince of Egypt" from 1998. We step through what makes this movie so special to Joe and integral to his upbringing, how and why it won an Oscar, and ponder at what an alternative universe would look like if this movie out-performed "Shrek" (both concurrent projects from Dreamworks Studios).

Next episode is IT, y'all. After 3 years, almost to the exact date, Uncultured Universe is closing up shop and moving onto other hobbies and pursuits. It's been a great ride, but all good things must come to an end. So with that, we'll be doing a rarified, never-before-seen-or-heard-of DOUBLE FEATURE episode where we'll look at two movies at the same time: Justin's pick "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" from 1985, and Joe's pick "A League of Their Own" from 1992. Do these two movies have more in common than you realize? Listen and find out.

Uncultured Culture Club: Forrest Gump 20 Sep 202401:13:58

"Life is like a box of chocolates..."

To celebrate our 50th episode (as well as the podcast's 2nd birthday) we've decided to temporarily throw out the rules and do something a little different. This episode, we look at Justin's favorite movie of all time, and Joe has also seen it: Forrest Gump from 1994!

No frills, no muss, no fuss. Just a great discussion about why the movie Forrest Gump rules. This film has it all: deep social commentary, romance, complex human emotion on display, harsh realities of war, but most importantly this movie has heart. Tom Hanks is obviously at the center of that heart, but his costars Robin Wright, Sally Field, and Gary Sinise are absolute triumphs in their roles that support and don't outshine the others.

We'll come back to our Uncultured Culture Club soon with Joe's immense and hard-to-tackle pick, the entire Lord of the Rings Extended Editions! But first, we're going to jump into October looking at a couple Winona Ryder centric films starting with a selection from Joe, 1994's "Little Women"!

Field of Dreams (1989)07 Sep 202401:05:13

"If you build it, he will come."

We go straight to the heartland of middle America with the late 80's family drama "Field of Dreams" - a Joe pick! Justin had always known the general broad sweepings of the film, but never knew deep down it was dad-centric ghost tale.

The boys discuss how the family nature is the heart of this movie, and how that's what truly give it such a lasting impact. It also goes without saying how phenomenal James Earl Jones is, being a crotchety yet solid foundation to this flick. Finally, there's discussion of just how with a few simple tweaks to the script, this movie could've easily been turned into a psychological horror.

BIG NEWS! So we're approaching our 50th episode of Uncultured Universe, which is both insane and incredible. To celebrate, we'll be looking at a couple of our favorite films together, regardless if the other has seen it before or not, because fuck it! To start we'll be going with Justin's absolute favorite film of all time - "Forrest Gump," starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and Gary Sinise!

Varsity Blues (1999)18 Aug 202401:18:50

"I don't want your life."

Are y'all ready for some good ol' sports film talkin'? Then strap on your helmet and get out there, coach is countin' on you!

We take a look at some influential, beloved (as well as heavily parodied) sports classic, starting with Justin's pick: "Varsity Blues" from 1999.

The boys discuss the seemingly innocuous and innocent plot to dive deeper into the deeper and darker implications of this movie. The adults of the town? Has-beens and drunk who are stuck in the past. The coach? A sadistic sociopath who has probably killed before. And of course, these here good ol' boys just run rampant through the town of West Canaan with impunity. A lively discussion ensues.

Come back later in August for Joe's sports pick, all about the Kevin Costner-driven classic: "Field of Dreams"!

Miss Congeniality (2000)02 Aug 202401:11:05

"You think I'm gorgeous, you want to kiss me..."

We put the cuffs on our Crime Corner July series and throw away the key with our episode all about 2000's "Miss Congeniality"!

Sandy B. is on fire in this one, anyone could attest to that. Accompanying her are heavy hitters like Candice Bergen, William Shatner, and of course the effervescent Michael Caine bring a level of panache. And lest we forget, a stunningly hot Benjamin Bratt rounds out the cast with his smarminess.

A classic early 2000's comedy, this one pulls all the right strings in balancing comedy and action, while bringing a little bit of that down-home goodness that only Sandra Bullock can bring to the table. But of course, it goes without saying this movie's blatant sexism and objectification of women is on full display and is a product of its time.

Despite the flaws, this movie is enjoyable mostly in part to the dynamic and fun cast. This movie also holds a special place in Joe's heart for a number of awe-worthy reasons!

Stay tuned for our next series where we explore sports movies, literally kicking off with a Justin pick: "Varsity Blues"!

Super Troopers (2002)15 Jul 202401:05:08

"Mother of God."

Expecting 1987's "Robocop?" Well guess again, muchachos. We're hitting the highway with the comedy cult classic from 2002, Broken Lizard's "Super Troopers."

A deeply nostalgic cut from Justin's teenage years that surprisingly (but also not so surprisingly) did not hit the mark with Joe. Call it differing tastes, or simply chalk it up to a movie comedy that's nearing 20 years old showing its age. Irregardless, this movie still slaps and hits for the most part, with its deceivingly straightforward plot, but heavily peppered in with some classic early-2000's raunch and physical comedy.

Following up our Crime Corner July, faux law enforcement mini series will be the 2000 action comedy starring Uncultured Universe fav Sandra Bullock, "Miss Congeniality!"

Superstar (1999)01 Jul 202401:07:52

"Go drink a bottle of yourself."

Rounding out the SNL mini series with the late 90's Catholic school "teen" comedy, "Superstar," starring Molly Shannon as the zany yet earnest Mary Katherine Gallagher.

Again, the SNL studios crew managed to extrapolate and bring a small screen character and world to life with this movie, and with classic 90's gusto. Justin and Joe discuss the unique comedy of Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell, the wonderfully villainous nature of Elaine Hendrix's Evian, and this movie's insane one-liners ("Mary Magdelicious!")

Join us in July where we take an interesting turn towards two cop movies that could not be any more different, starting with 1987's "Robocop."

Waynes World (1992)10 Jun 202401:10:41

""Party time. Excellent."

We're back on our movie bullshit, coming at you with the early 90's grunge-slacker-comedy classic "Wayne's World" - schwing!

During the month of June, we'll be taking a look at movies that are based on Saturday Night Live sketches. This one of course takes the cake as the highest grossing film based on an SNL skit, and obviously it makes sense. This movie is full of great gags, memorable quotes, and a brand of comedy Joe & Justin clock as "innocently Canadian."

Be sure to come back later this month for the Joe pick, "Superstar" starring Molly Shannon & Will Ferrell!

Uncultured Recap: Music24 May 202400:51:32

It's a recap episode, everybody!

After 40+ episodes, why not take a look back in the past? If you've been in the Uncultured circle for a bit, you know that we make a lot of silly musical accompaniments to add a little spice to our episodes. From vibe-y lo-fi movie trailers, to off-the-wall intros for a game, we do it all in-house and we wanted to shine a little light on some of our favorites.

We take a look at a few highlights ranging from our sea shanty inspired song for our "Muppet Treasure Island" episode, to a rocking version of the iconic motif from "Interstellar." Listen to see where the inspiration stemmed from, a little of the recording process, and the hilarity surround some of the absurd concepts.

Stay tuned for our next mini-series in June where we'll look at movies based off of famous SNL skits. Starting off with a Justin pick, we'll embody the spirit of peak early 90's cinema: "Wayne's World!"

Uncultured TV: Bob's Burgers18 May 202401:12:35

"If you think about it, any box could have vibrators in it."

We've finally cracked into the world of television! This is our initial foray into discussing our favorite tv shows with each other, and Joe mans the helm with his pick, the animated family sitcom Bob's Burgers.

Out the gate, we knew this would be a big undertaking, asking someone who's never seen the show (in this case Justin) to take a dive into a new show. Luckily, Bob's Burgers is not serialized, so Joe picked 4 episodes that he feels encapsulates the wacky and often endearing Belcher family.

We discuss episodes "Bob Fires the Kids", "Turkey in a Can", "V for Valentine-detta", and "The Plight Before Christmas." We look at what makes each of these episodes special, and drive at the heart of the show, which is the love and affection the Belcher's has for each other.

Stay tuned for our next episode, where we'll take a look back at some of our favorite musical moments from the back catalog of Uncultured Universe (it's a recap clip show y'all!)

Uncultured Book Club Vol 1: Marley & Me22 Apr 202401:05:47

"Give him your heart and he will give you his."

What a doozy of an episode, y'all. We welcomed back Ryan to sit behind the mic to discuss one of her beloved comfort-reads, the 2005 New York Times Bestseller "Marley & Me" as well as the 2008 film starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston.

We discuss our own experience with pets throughout our lives, what the book means to Ryan, and how much we loathe the movie. Bottom line: this book and movie will make you feel a lot of things.

This is our first "Book Club" episode, so be sure to stay tuned for more in the future!

Mortal Kombat | Basically Wii Sports Resort | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review26 Aug 202501:15:17

GET OVER HERE!

We got another 30 year old classic coming in hot - this time with the 1995 cult classic "Mortal Kombat." Based on the deeply popular and long-lasting video game series, this movie capstones the Justin-loves-karate-fighting-movies Trilogy with an enigmatic bang. Filled with super rad fight scenes, practical sets and backdrops, this movie only comes up short with Joe's sentiment of "there's literally no other way to do this movie BUT to do it silly." Always a good time when the uncultured enjoys the flick.

Join us next time for our third-to-last episode EVER with Joe's pick, "Prince of Egypt."

The Big Lebowski (1998)25 Mar 202401:08:58

"And this guy peed on it."

We wrap our mini series of looking at the iconic cinematographer, Roger Deakins, with the cult classic from 1998, "The Big Lebowski."

In accordance with the tenets of his duderness, this episode is chill AF. We talk about how non-traditionally this flick reached cult status, and how John Goodman's Walter Sobchak is the MVP. Of course, we discuss the lived-in warmth this movie has visually, and how obviously that is thanks in part to Deakins' masterful handiwork.

Stay tuned, because next month we're mixing things up a bit! We're bringing back co-host Ryan to discuss our first ever book-into-movie discussion, starting with "Marley & Me." Prepare your tear ducts.

1917 (2019)11 Mar 202401:19:53

"If you fail, it will be a massacre."

The Uncultured Universe continues to look at the people who bring a film to life, with this month's focus being on the cinematographer synonymous with the profession: Roger Deakins. To kick off the series, we watched the 2019 war epic, "1917."

The boys pore over the realities of war, the neurodivergent tendencies of reacting emotionally to powerful and sweeping scores and cinematic moments, and the sheer awesomeness that this limited-cut/seemingly one-take masterpiece accomplishes. And of course, massive gushing over how damn good this flick looks, of course thanks in part to Deakins himself.

Be sure to stay tuned for our next episode, where we go in the complete opposite direction of war, and look at another Deakin's classic "The Big Lebowski."

Romeo + Juliet (1996)25 Feb 202401:20:32

"For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo."

The Uncultured Universe wraps our February Baz Luhrmann series by talking about perhaps one of his most well known film, "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet."

The boys verily dive in to examine this strikingly beautiful film, that is both timeless and yet a perfect time capsule of the 90's. From Leo's perfectly mid-nineties shaggy long hair, to just how incredibly hot everyone is in this movie, no stone is left unturn'd. Also, never trust your fate to an experimental Friar or a delivery service.

Stay tuned next month, where we take a look at the highly influential and accomplished cinematographer, Roger Deakins!

Strictly Ballroom (1992)09 Feb 202400:56:14

"A life lived in fear is a life half lived."

February starts off with a quickstep and a foxtrot by looking at the iconic and well-respected work of auteur Baz Luhrmann debut film, "Strictly Ballroom." It is a romantic comedy/drama centered on a gifted dancer bound for great things and a lust for bucking the system with his unconventional dance steps and trying to succeed with a new partner.

This was one of Joe's "library" movies that he and his family watched a bunch growing up, and Justin had never even HEARD of it before! The boys discuss the ins and outs of Luhrmann's debut film and how it ties to the other films of his red curtain trilogy, "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge."

Speaking of, stay tuned for the next episode where we look at Luhrmann's follow up, "Romeo + Juliet"!

Legend (1985)22 Jan 202401:12:47

"What is light without dark?"

We wrap up our TIM CURRY series in fantastical style (heaps of glitter to boot) with the 1985 cult classic "Legend."

The boys discuss the sheer dreamy-ness that envelops this film: from the incredibly realistic, albeit wet, practical makeup effects, to the insane amount of dust and tangible magic that fill the forest scenes. And then of course, a large amount of discussion is spent on Tim Curry's goddamn iconic "Lord of Darkness" devil-in-the-flesh performance. While his screen presence is small, his impact is large and can be felt deep in your bone marrow.

Be sure to tune in for next month's theme where we'll look at movies by the avant garde director known for flash and bold choices, Laz Buhrmann!

The Three Musketeers (1993)08 Jan 202401:10:04

"All for one; one for all."

New year, new name, new us! We kick off 2024 with our TIM CURRY series, and the sweepingly Disney-fied classic "The Three Musketeers" from 1993!

The boys dive into the acting choices of the cast (re: accents), how misleading the title is, and just how incredibly H-O-R-N-Y this movie is. And of course, this movie would be nothing with out the powerful presence and alluring malevolence of Tim Curry. The man oozes charisma, and commands attention when in a scene, of course not without his trademark not-so-subtle sexiness to it.

Check out our next installment in the Tim Curry series when we look at the high fantasy fever dream, "Legend" from 1985!

Krampus (2015)18 Dec 202301:33:52

“...Krampus came not to reward, but to punish. Not to give, but to take."

We wrap up the Xmas season, as well as the 2023 year, with the indomitable monster holiday flick, "Krampus" from 2015. The spooky Christmas movie tradition continues, as the boys dissect the true meaning of the holiday, the inner workings of Santa Claus and Krampus, and have a little DnD roleplaying to cap it all off!

Thanks to all who have watched and listened this year! The UCU has some big plans for next year, diving more into people-focused discussions. We'll see you in 2024 when we kick off our Tim Curry series with Joe's pick: "The Three Musketeers" from 1993!

“We're all gonna be down here talking about you."

Let's kick off the Christmas Season with heaps of cringe, a mixed bag of chemistry, and a whole lot of "what the hell" as we discuss the 2005 divisive romantic dram-edy, "The Family Stone."

Hear Justin and Joe dissect the intricacies of this unique family dynamic, and how an outsider threatens their perfect and cozy equilibrium. The boys also talk about who should go to jail for their crimes of being just the absolute worst (spoiler: it both is and isn't who you think it is!).

Justin and Ryan discuss the ins and outs as well as the science behind this incredible space drama, the unrelenting gut-punches that being a parent brings, and just how much of a dick Matt Damon is.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)13 Nov 202301:17:31

“I already forget how I used to feel about you.”

Wildcard month is back, and out the gate we’re getting deeply cerebral with the 2004 mind-twisting and heart-breaking “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

The boys discuss what it means to truly forget, dive into how our memories work, and wonder how in the hell Lacuna, Inc. operates with only 4 people on staff.

And haven’t you read this before? Déjà vu.

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit | And Also With You | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review09 Aug 202501:09:00

Oh happy day!

We're coming back to the convent and doing our first ever sequel to an episode we've covered previously with "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" from 1993. Another iconic flick in the repertoire, which brings back the infectious buzz of Whoopi Goldberg, and that classic early 1990's feel-good atmosphere. While still a good time, filled with memorable performances, musical numbers, and copious amounts of montages, this movie feels more made-for-tv and somewhat trope-y at times. But that was the 90's man!

Join us next time when we complete the Justin-Ninja-Karate trilogy (previous installments include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie!) with another 30 year old cult classic: 1995's "Mortal Kombat" - Hi-yah!

The Exorcist (1973)10 Oct 202301:13:57

“What an excellent day for an exorcism.”

We’re back on our spooky bullshit this month, and we came out swinging with the 1973 heavy hitter “The Exorcist.” Always committed to the bit, Justin and Joe went and saw this in a physical movie theater, celebrating the film’s 50th(!) anniversary.

The boys ask why the temperature needs to be so low while you’re possessed, what’s with all the good-looking smoking priests, and if the power of Christ really is all that compelling? You won’t believe the answer to number two!

Next up for Spooky Season is Joe's pick, M3GAN from 2023! Stay tuned, uncultured freaks!

Howl's Moving Castle (2005)01 Oct 202301:23:58
“I see no point in living if I can’t be beautiful.” This certainly has been a wild card month. We round out this September series with Joe’s pick, the Hayao Miyazaki modern classic “Howl’s Moving Castle.” A fever dream incarnate? A romantic steampunk’s wet dream? Perhaps an amalgam of both? The boys discuss the sheer drama that embodies Howl's narcissism, the multi-layers of themes that emerge from the story, as well as the beauty that circles every single Studio Ghibli film. Get lost in the details of this surprising anti-war and-literal-coming-of-age masterpiece! Stay tuned as we kick off Spooky Season with “The Exorcist" coming soon! -- Welcome to the Uncultured Cinematic Universe, with your hosts, Justin and Joe! The Parent Trap (1998)23 Aug 202301:22:01

"Sisters? Hallie, we're like twins!"

The boys at the UCU wrap up August's Summer Vacation theme with another indelible classic, 1998's "The Parent Trap." Introducing and starring a young Lindsay Lohan in what might be the role of the century, this movie is a sweet family-centric rom-com with incredibly dark and seedy implications and undertones. Like seriously, how messed up is the premise of this movie?!

Speaking of messed up, stick around for the gameshow at the end of the episode - it's a good one!

"You're the god damn devil!" The boys at the UCU kick off August with our new theme - Summer Vacation flicks! The first foray into that world is the raunchy heartbreak-in-paradise comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." While this movie holds a special place in Justin's heart, Joe is admittedly a little lukewarm on the film at first blush. See if Justin can turn Joe around! Fans of dad joke-level puns will also get a kick of the end game; stay to the end!--Welcome to the Uncultured Cinematic Universe, with your hosts, Justin and Joe! Speed (1994)17 Jul 202301:25:07

"Yeah? Well I'm taller."

In a film filled with insane one liners, "Speed" definitely isn't without its heart. The boys dive into the 1994 blockbuster classic and talk about how everything is a bomb, Jeff Daniels is the only sane person in the movie, as well as the general ineptitude of the police. Also, can we just take another minute to appreciate Keanu Reeves' forearms? You're welcome.

Sister Act | Helluva Good Time | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review03 Jul 202501:03:31

Closing out Pride Month™ 3 days late. How queer.

We take on Joe's pick for the month, 1992's "Sister Act" starring Whoopi Goldberg, and boy what a wave of nostalgia across the board. This flick is like a warm hug, welcoming you back to simpler times. A tight, albeit contrived, classic 90's plot, powerful performances, and memorable musical numbers - this movie has it all. Whoopi shines with her insanely infectious allure, and is perfectly complimented by Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, and Wendy Makkena. So kick back with a can of Surge, snack on some Dunkaroos, and enjoy this perfect 90's capsule of a film with us!

Next time we're back to a Justin pick, celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie"!
