138. How Do I Know if the Holy Spirit is Guiding Me? 02 Sep 202400:16:43

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

AMA: I’m a junior in high school, but only just turned 16, which means I’ll move out to start college when I’m 17, and I still don’t know where God wants me. I’ve prayed for guidance and trust, but I just don’t quite know how to get through high school with so much ungodly anxiety.

I wanted to answer this question, because we are walking through this exact thing right now ourselves. I have a 17 year old daughter who is in her senior year of high school (grade 12) and a 15 year old son who is a junior (grade 11).

To share a little bit about our story, my daughter started taking dual enrollment classes during her 11th grade year in high school. For those of you who don’t know what those are, that’s when you take college courses in high school, but they count both toward your high school courses and your college courses. She was sure she knew exactly what God wanted her to do in life. Fast forward to this year and she came to grips with the thought of…what if this isn’t what God wants me to do with my life? What if I’m wrong.

Girls, whew, this culture puts so much pressure on teens to have their whole life figured out. I feel like many times, we rush God’s plans, because of this pressure. It’s tough…you have only a short period of time to figure out your whole life when a lot of adults don’t even know what they want to do with their life.

137. Why Isn't God Answering My Prayers.26 Aug 202400:15:21

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Have you ever felt like God wasn't answering your prayers? Like, He's just not listening?

I have had several of you girls write into me lately saying that you don't feel like God is answering your prayers and it's making you question your faith.

Today, we’re going to talk about Hannah. We can find her story in 1 Samuel chapter 1. Hannah walked through some pretty big challenges. She doesn't feel like God is answering her prayers, so she gives into the challenges, starts to let them take her down and then something happened.

Check out this week's podcast episode to learn what Hannah did and what you can do to see real results with your prayers.

127. AMA: How do I Overcome Distractions and Temptations When It's So Hard?24 Jun 202400:23:02

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

On this week’s Ask Me Anything Episode, Priscilla says, “I’m a homeschooler and I do all my school on my laptop, and I have a really hard time staying off other apps like YouTube. And no matter how hard I try and pray I just can’t seem to get over this. I want to live for God and do His will, but this is really hard to get over.”

Now, you may not be a homeschooler and you may not do school online, most of you are probably not even doing school right now, because you are on summer break, but I’m sure almost every single one of you can agree with me when I say that there are things that distract you from doing what you know you should be doing...either because we lack the motivation to do it or the willpower to do what we are supposed to do.

I mean come on, how many times have your parents said, “I thought I asked you to do...fill in the blank…can you tell me why it’s not done?” Or something along those lines…maybe you’ve heard, “how many times do I have to ask you to…again fill in the blank.” I’m sure we’ve all been there at one time or another!

Or how many times have you told yourself, I am going to read my Bible when I first wake up and then this little rectangle object…and I’m not talking about your Bible…is so enticing you can’t help but grab it. You tell yourself; “I’m only going to check my messages. I’m only going to see if I have any notifications”…and then one hour, two hours, three hours go by and you have totally forgotten about and ditched your Bible.

As I’ve said, we’ve all been there! A couple weeks ago, I woke up, got into my Bible, but got distracted and had to go back later to pray. Ugh…as Priscilla said, “No matter how hard I try and pray I just can’t seem to get over this. I want to live for God and do His will, but this is really hard to get over.” How do we overcome these distractions? Why are distractions so hard to overcome?

I want you to think about it this way, the enemy is constantly attacking our minds. If you are living for Jesus and the devil isn’t able to make you bad, his next trick up his sleeve is to get you distracted, because he knows if he can get you distracted, he will pull you away from God and then he will be able to make you bad.

The whole point of distractions is to hold you back and pull you down.

Check out this week's episode to learn how you can overcome distractions and temptations!

39. No Fear Here!16 Oct 202200:18:55

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

I used to be so addicted to fear…yep…I said it. I was addicted to fear. I was addicted to horror movies…I couldn’t wait until the next one came out. I went to haunted houses. Now looking back, it’s crazy to me just how addicting fear really is.

It wasn’t until a couple years after I became a Christian that I had a conversation with another Christian about how I was going to watch the next horror movie that had come out and he looked at me…not in a judgmental way, but in a way that was just matter of fact. He said, “I don’t watch horror movies.”

After I picked up my jaw off the floor because I was so surprised…ha-ha…I asked him why and I remember his response so clearly even to this day. He said, “I don’t understand why people intentionally invite fear into their lives when God tells not to fear.”

 That night changed my life!

2 Timothy 1:7 says that “God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and of a sound mind.”

1 John 4:18 then goes onto tell us that there is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out all fear, because fear involves torment. Whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

What is love?

1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love.

There is no fear in God, but God's perfect love casts out all fear!

Fear is a liar! But fear is also very real. You may have heard of the acronym for fear that says, “False evidence appearing real.” That’s exactly what fear is. Fear is a tactic the enemy uses that is meant to paralyze us so that we are not effective in making a difference for Jesus.

Three of the biggest fears we face:

  1. The fear of failure-
  2. The fear of missing out
  3. The fear of rejection

38. God loves the Unlovely10 Oct 202200:16:18

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Growing up, I saw myself as a reject.

That word reject means to throw away, as anything useless or disgusting. Something that is despised. To cast away or abandon.

My dad was very physically, mentally and verbally abusive toward me and my mom would leave for weeks at a time, leaving us to think that maybe this time she wasn’t coming back. It left me in a place where I felt unloved, unaccepted and rejected.

Each one of us are born with a God-shaped hole in our hearts. We can try to fill it with all kinds of different things, but the only thing that actually fills that hole is God. For me, try to fill it with…friends, school, music, boyfriends, but no matter what I tried, nothing could satisfy my heart until I met Jesus.

You may have heard me talk about this statistic before, but it is projected that only 4% of Gen Z is Bible believing Christians. Those who are between the ages of 10 and 25. So, if you think of the statistic, it looks like this…out of every 100 Gen Z’rs you see walking around in your city or your school, only 4 of them are projected to be Bible believing Christians. The average number of students in a public school in America is 500 students. If your school had 500 students, that means that only 20 of them are projected to be Bible believing Christians. That’s not a lot.

According to another research that was recently done, that says 79% of Gen Zers reported feeling lonely. Ladies, this generation needs the hope that you have on the inside of you. Just because we see that statistic of 4% of your generation being Bible believing Christians, doesn’t mean that it has to stay that way! People need and want to know Jesus!

Back in Jesus’ time Zacchaeus was considered to be the biggest reject of them all. Nobody liked him, because he was wicked to the core.

But even as a reject…there was something on the inside of him that was empty…that wanted more.

Zacchaeus was drawn to Jesus, because there was something different about Him. Jesus went out of His way to see Zacchaeus, the one person nobody wanted to see. Jesus went out of His way to let Zacchaeus know that God even loves Him…the one that everyone else rejected.

36. If God is Good, Why Do Bad Things Happen?26 Sep 202200:18:21

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

If God is good, why do bad things happen?

To answer this question, we have to first ask ourselves...is God really a good God?

My answer...without a shadow of a doubt, yes!!

We can also see in the Bible, God's character...and let me tell you, He is good!

1 Chronicles 16:34 says, "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!"

Psalm 145:9 says that the Lord is good to all!

James 1:17-Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

He is good all the time! He doesn't change!

So, if God is good, then we have to ask ourselves the question...why do bad things happen?

Check out this week's episode to learn more about why bad things happen...why God doesn't stop them...and so much more!

35. You are Beautiful19 Sep 202200:14:07

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

What is beauty? What makes it so enticing?

I mean, some people will do anything just to discover beauty: from surgeries, to endless video tutorials online, to spending money they don’t have shopping for clothes that they think will make them beautiful.

Is beauty defined by the culture or those around us?

Is beauty only skin deep, or does it go much deeper than that?

If we are looking to outward appearances only, culture and media are usually the ones who decide what beauty is. Look around you…what do you see on tv shows? Movies? In magazines?
What are the newest fashion trends?

Without even saying it, they determine the way we view beauty.

Why do we fall for it?

Some of us want to express our artistic nature.

Some of us want to stand out in a crowd and become the most beautiful person around.

Some of us want to just fit in…we don’t want to stand out in a crowd. We want to feel like we belong, so we use fashion to cover up the fear of being an outcast.

In the day of technology, when we post pics on Instagram, we use filters and airbrushing to make ourselves look better. If you ever see a model in a magazine, you will see someone who looks so flawless, but that’s not reality.

But what does God say about our beauty? Who does He say we are?

34. I Forgive You12 Sep 202200:17:44

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

I forgive you…these can be some of the hardest words to say to someone, yet these three simple words are also some of the most powerful words that we could say…they have the ability to bring so much freedom into your life.

What is forgiveness…many times when we think of the word forgiveness, we associate it with our emotions and our feelings…how we feel about someone and what they did to us, but did you know that forgiveness has nothing to do with our feelings or our emotions?

Forgiveness is a choice. It is extending grace to someone even when they don’t deserve it…and many times, they don’t deserve it.

Grace is not getting what we deserve, but getting what Jesus deserves.

When we extend grace to someone, we are basically saying…what you did was wrong, but because Jesus has forgiven me, I will forgive you even though you don’t deserve it.

And this might help you…you don’t have to even like the person who you are forgiving. Just because you forgive someone, doesn’t mean that you have to enter back into a friendship or a relationship with that person.

Unforgiveness doesn’t hurt the person that hurt you…it only hurts you.

So, how do we forgive? What does that look like? Before we get into that, let’s see what Jesus says about forgiveness.

Check out this week's episode of the UncommonTEEN Podcast to learn more about what it looks like to forgive.

33. Breaking Free from Perfectionism05 Sep 202200:16:38

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

These week on the UncommonTEEN Podcast, we are talking about Breaking Free from Perfection.

Many of us have the tendency to be perfectionistic. I know it's something that I struggled with my whole life and I talk to so many teen girls who struggle with it as well.

Perfectionism can feel like it's suffocating us. It wears away your peace and robs you of joy. Perfectionism also keeps you from being the best version of you.

When we focus so much on ourselves and the need to be perfect, we push God away and basically are saying that we don’t need Him, because we have this on our own.

Perfection leads to anxiety and frustration, but God wants you free.

Perfection leads you to feeling like you aren’t valuable or that you don’t measure up when you mess us. God tells us that we are valuable, not based on what we have or haven’t done, but based on what Jesus has done for us.

Perfectionism is rooted in fear.

Fear of rejection
Fear of acceptance
Fear of getting something wrong
Fear of someone seeing the real you

Check out this week's podcast episode to learn how you can break free from perfection!

Ladies, there is always hope! With God, you can overcome!

However, change doesn't happen until you make a decision to change!

When I think of overcomers in the Bible, one person comes to mind.

John 5:1-7- From Galilee, Jesus returned to Jerusalem to observe one of the Jewish feasts. Inside the city, near the Sheep Gate, there is a pool called in Hebrew, “Bethesda,” surrounded by five covered porches—the paralyzed, the blind, and the crippled—all of them waiting for their healing. For an angel of God periodically descended into the pool to stir the waters, and the first one who stepped into the pool after the waters swirled would instantly be healed. Among the sick people lying there was a man who had been disabled for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him lying there, He knew that the man had been crippled for a long time. Jesus said to him, “Do you truly want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, there’s no way I can get healed, for I have no one to lower me into the water when the angel comes. As soon as I try to crawl to the edge of the pool, someone else jumps in ahead of me.”

The man saw himself as crippled and that there was no hope. He stayed stuck in his sickness, because of the excuses that he was making.

However, when Jesus met him, now the man was finally ready to get rid of His excuses and Jesus was able to heal Him completely.

For me, my teen years were some of the darkest years of my life. I didn’t feel loved or accepted. I hated who I was. I carried around so much pain. No matter where I looked, I couldn't find the one thing I was missing in life…love.

It wasn’t until I met Jesus when I was 18 that I finally had a glimpse of hope.

I wish I could say that in an instant, that things got better after I gave my life to the Lord, but they didn’t.

It wasn’t until a couple years later that I began to realize that since I had given my life to Jesus, I was a new creation. I was no longer identified by my past. I could move forward.

And the same thing goes for you. If you have given your life to Jesus, you have been made a new creation. You are no longer identified by the things that are holding you back.

If you’re ever going to change your life, you have to first change how you see yourself on the inside. God wants you to be healed. He wants you to overcome whatever you’re currently

29. It Takes Courage!08 Aug 202200:17:53

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

I love how God can take common things and make them uncommon. I love how He can take ordinary things and make the extraordinary.

Acts 4:13 says, "Now when they (the crowd) saw the boldness of Peter and John and saw that they were unlearned and untrained in the schools, they were common men with no educational advantages, the crowd marveled; and they recognized that Peter and John had been with Jesus!"

Ladies, it doesn’t matter what grades you get. It doesn’t matter what other people think about you. God can use you!

See, Peter and John were just common men, but because they spent time with Jesus, they were no longer common, now they were uncommon!

I love that word uncommon…it means not common; rare; above the ordinary; exceptional; and remarkable! Ladies, that is you!!

God has called you to be a light to this world. He has called you to be a light in your youth ministry. He has called you to be a light in your community. He has called you to be a light in your school. What it’s going to take in order to be that light, though, is spending time with Jesus and it’s also going to take courage.

In order to fulfill God’s plan for your life, it’s going to take courage. The root word for courage comes from the French word, “Coeur” which means heart. It takes courage…it takes heart in order to fulfill God’s plan for you.

28. Discover Your God-Given Purpose by Being You!01 Aug 202200:15:54

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Two of the biggest questions we all have in life are: Why am I here? And what is my purpose?

We hear verses like Jeremiah 29:11, where God tells us that He has plans for our lives of good and not evil to give us a future and a hope. And Ephesians 2:10 where it says that we are God’s masterpiece, recreated in Christ Jesus for good works that were planned for us even before the world was formed.

But how do we discover that purpose? How do we find out why we are here?

This week on the UncommonTEEN Podcast, I get the incredible honor of having Sara Barratt join me again!

This is the second time that Sara has been on the UncommonTEEN Podcast, and ladies...let me tell you, there's a reason she's back!

Sara has such a huge heart for Jesus and for reaching teens for the Lord.

On this week's episode, Sara shares with you the message behind her new book, Stand Up, Stand Strong.

In this book, she addresses the questions that are often causing confusion among Christian teens today:

How do I navigate the LGBT+ issues as a Christian?
How can I know who I am in such a "be yourself" world?
How should I think about things like Critical Race Theory? Abortion? Transgenderism? Media?
How can I apply biblical truth to the hot-button issues of today and remain faithful to God...even in an anti-Christian world?

26. Setting Boundaries: Part 217 Jul 202200:18:22

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Hey ladies! We are on part 2 of our series on boundaries!

When most people hear the word boundaries, they automatically think of something that is restrictive…it keeps them bound. It separates them from others. We think of them in a negative light.

However, boundaries do more than keeping you in and keeping others out. Boundaries help others see who it is that you really are and what it is that you believe.

Boundaries are not a negative thing. They are a good thing. Boundaries are a blessing! They give you security. They help you take responsibility for your life…your thoughts, your words, your actions…and you don’t have to take responsibility for others. That’s on them.

Know that when God wants to bless someone, He uses people. When the enemy wants to hurt someone…he uses people. And let me tell you, there will be many opportunities he will use people to try to get you to do things you don’t want to do or become someone you don’t want to be. When we have boundaries in place, those people that the enemy uses, can’t shake us.

Today, we are going to talk about 3 areas that as Christians we need to set boundaries in: In our friendships, in our relationships and in our social media.

25. Setting Boundaries: Part 111 Jul 202200:18:08

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

When most people hear the term boundaries, their automatic thought goes to an imaginary line that separates you from someone else…kind of like a boundary on a map between two states or two countries.

However, boundaries do more than keeping you in and keeping others out. Boundaries help others see who it is that you really are and what it is that you believe.

When boundaries are set well, they can keep you from falling into a place where you resent those around you, where you are angry all the time, where you are fighting with the feelings of guilt and shame. None of us want to be in that place. We want to enjoy our lives. We want to enjoy those around us, we want to live in peace knowing that we are standing strong in who God created us to be.

When we don’t set healthy boundaries, it can lead us to taking our best friend’s struggles and hardships on as our own, weighing us down with a sense of heaviness and anxiety and stress. I’m not saying that you can’t be there for your friends and you can’t help them, but it isn’t your responsibility to carry that load for them.

Without healthy boundaries, people will take advantage of us. My husband used to be this way where he felt like he had to say yes to everyone and do everything for everyone, but he was struggling emotionally, because he couldn’t be everything for everyone. God never designed him to be that way and God didn’t design you that way either.

Without healthy boundaries, it can lead you to being a people-pleaser, where you are constantly changing who you are depending on who you are around. When we become people pleasers for long enough, eventually, we will lose who it is that God created us to be in the first place and that can be a very lonely and dark place to be. I know, I have been there!

Without healthy boundaries, it can lead you to a place where you are trying to get your acceptance and your validation from those around you. The problem with that is when you try to gain your acceptance and your validation from those around you, when something happens…like they reject you…it crushes you…and it will happen, because they are only human, they aren’t perfect.

So, let’s talk a little more about healthy boundaries, what areas you should set healthy boundaries in, what they look like and how do you actually set them.

There are three common areas we need to set boundaries:

  1. Our thoughts
  2.  Our emotions
  3. Our bodies or our personal space

This week we will talk about what it means to set healthy boundaries in our thoughts and in our emotions and then next week, we are going to talk more about setting healthy boundaries when it comes to our bodies or our personal space, especially in the area of our friendships, our relationships and social media. So, you don’t want to miss out on next week’s episode!

24. There is Freedom in Love!04 Jul 202200:17:13

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

As I was studying freedom this week in the Bible, I came across some verses that really stood out to me in a way that I hadn’t seen them before.

Most of us have heard these verses that are mentioned several times in the Bible, however, we’re going to read them out of Matthew 22:37-39-Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Okay, so you may be thinking, what does this have to do with freedom? Oh my goodness, so much!

Galatians 5:1 tells us to stand fast therefore in the freedom by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage…that means do not move from the freedom that Jesus has given you! Don’t go back to the bondage that had previously held you back from being all that God created you to be.

Ladies, there is a bondage that has held several of us back for so long and it’s time to step in the freedom that God has given you…once and for all! What is that bondage that has held us back…that has enslaved us. Well, let’s keep reading in Galatians and find out.

Still in Galatians 5, we’re going to skip down to verse 13. It says, “For you have been called to freedom.” Ladies! God doesn’t want you stuck in bondage. He doesn’t want you held back by anything. He has a plan and a purpose for your life and He wants to use you to make a huge difference for Him!

However, continuing in verse 13, it says not to use that freedom that Jesus has given us as an opportunity for the flesh…meaning, don’t use it for selfish reasons, but through love serve one another.

The way we treat others…the way we serve others…those should be done with love…that should be the outcome of the freedom God has given us…not using our freedom for selfish gain.

That word love is agape. This is the kind of love that God has for us and God has given us to love others with.

Romans 5:5- Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Agape love is not a feeling, but it’s something that we choose. It’s an action. This kind of love always seeks the highest good of the other person, no matter what they do or don’t do. This kind of love gives freely without asking for anything in return. It does not consider what we think the person’s worth is that we are coming in contact with. Again, it’s the same kind of love God has for you.

So true freedom means to serve others in love.

Then Galatians 5:14 goes on to say, “For the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

How do we serve others in love…it starts here. If we don’t love ourselves…and I’m not saying make yourself a shrine or an idol. Don’t put yourself in a position that says, “I’m better than you.” It doesn’t mean selfish love.

But how do we love ourselves with the kind of love God has for us?

22. God is My Protector20 Jun 202200:18:05

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

It doesn’t take much to look around us and see all of the craziness going on in this world. I mean, if you just watch the news for 5 minutes…which I don’t suggest...it can cause you (if you’re anything like me) to fight off anxiety and fear. It can lead us to feeling like we don’t ever want to leave our house.

But ladies, 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and of a sound mind…or a mind at peace.

With all that’s going on in the world, how can we trade that fear for what God says He’s given us…His power (miraculous power!), His love (that has no limits…no boundaries…no strings attached), and His peace.

In John 14:27, Jesus tells us that He has given us His peace. It’s not a peace like the world has to offer, but a peace that can only come from God. Therefore, we don’t have to let our hearts be troubled nor let them be afraid.

How do we receive that peace, though. How can we walk in a way that we know 100%, without a shadow of a doubt that we are protected and kept safe?

The key to walking in God’s protection for your life is to spend time with Him. Get to know what His Word says about your protection. When you mess up, don’t be afraid to go to God and talk to Him about it. He knows the moment that you mess up and He’s there waiting for you with His arms of love wide open for you.

Then, as you learn what God’s Word says about your protection, begin to speak it over your life and choose to trust God that His Word is the truth!

Today, we’re going to walk through Psalm chapter 91, that talks all about God’s protection over our lives. As we walk through this, my heart is to show you what God says you have protection from and to help you begin to stand strong on the Truth of God’s Word and see that protection in your life!

21. How Do I Study the Bible So I Can Understand It?13 Jun 202200:16:44

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

I have had many teen girls come to me over the years asking me what devotional is a good devotional for them to read. It’s a great question. I would venture to say that most everyone who listens to this podcast probably has read some kind of devotional in their life, right? I know I have.

However, do you want to know which devotional I think is the best devotional to read? My answer is usually none. I don’t care for devotionals at all and can I tell you why?

Most of the time, when we read devotionals, we are using those devotionals as our Bible Studies instead of reading the Word of God. Most devotionals start with a Bible verses or a couple verses, then it goes on to describe what the author believes about those verses and you’re done. However, when we study devotionals that way, we are not actually getting into the Bible for ourselves.

Ladies, John 8:31-32 tells us that when we abide in God and His Word abides in us. Then, we are His disciples and then the truth that we know will make us free.

The key to freedom in every area of our life is getting into the Word of God for ourselves.

Now, you may be asking, okay, Jamie, that makes sense and all, but don’t you have a devotional that you wrote.

Yes, yes I do. However, if you have read my devotional, you will see that I don’t want you to just blindly believe what I’m saying, I really do want you to get into the Word and see what God is saying directly to you!

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between the soul and the spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

Today, I want to talk about how to study the Bible so that, one, so that you can actually understand what you’re reading, but two so that your time with God isn’t boring.

So, how do you read the Bible in a way that it is working effectively in your life?

Check out this week's podcast episode!

20. Real Recovery-What Eating Disorder Recovery Actually Looks Like with Grace McCready06 Jun 202200:18:16

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Grace McCready is a twenty-something and the author of Real Recovery: What Eating Disorder Recovery Actually Looks Like.

"Grace McCready was a thin, beautiful girl; but when she looked in the mirror, all she saw was fat and ugly. What started out as her trying to lose a little weight by slowly changing her diet led to her telling endless lies, starving herself, and exercising herself nearly to death.

[Grace] kept believing lies about who she was instead of believing the truth about who God created her to be. But with the support help of her family, doctors, counselors, and God, Grace discovered what real recovery looks like."

In this week's podcast episode, Grace talks to us about how she was able to recover from the eating disorder she struggled with and the challenging road that she had to go down to really recover.

Even if you are not overcoming an eating disorder, the principles that we talk about in this week's episode, apply to any area of our life that we find ourselves struggling to overcome.

125. Peek Inside the Mind of a Teen Guy with Zach Lloyd10 Jun 202400:21:19

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Ladies, this week we are getting inside the mind of a teenage guy.

Zach Lloyd is a fitness and anti-diet coach. As a teen guy, Zach was bullied quite a bit until he began to workout and get fit. He understood what it was like to be on both sides of the spectrum as a teen guy...someone who didn't fit in at all to someone who got a lot of attention.

He talks to us about how teen guys try to gain the attention of teen girls.
How the majority of teen guys are really insecure, even if they are fit and in shape. He also talks about how they deal with a lot of the same insecurities that we deal with and what we can do to overcome those insecurities.

This is a two part episode, so be on the lookout, because next week we dig more into emotional eating (or not eating), why we do it and how we can over come.

19. Defeating Discouragement30 May 202200:16:34

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

I was talking to another teen girl recently and she told me something that made me sad. She said, “I don’t expect good things to happen anymore. I find out that when I don’t expect them to happen, I don’t get disappointed and if someone good was to happen, then it makes me just that much more excited.

That sounds great and all, but it makes my heart sad, because when we live life expecting disappointments, we are going to live our lives discouraged.

God doesn’t want us to live a life of discouragement or disappointment. He wants us to live a life of expecting good things to happen, because He is always looking for ways He can get good things to you!

Many of us know the verse, Jeremiah 29:11, but I want you to really think about this and ask yourself, do I really believe it?

It says, “for I know the plans that I have for you, says the Lord, plans of peace and NOT evil, plans to give you a future and a hope!”

God is saying…you don’t need to expect bad things to happen all the time, you can expect good, because He is good.

Now, I’m not saying that bad things will never happen, the storms of life come to every home, but they don’t have to touch you. They don’t have to hurt you. They don’t have to shake you.

You don’t have to live your life defeated and discouraged, because you have God on your side.

To learn more about how to defeat discouragement, check out this week's episode of the UncommonTEEN Podcast.

18. My Truth VS The Truth23 May 202200:16:43

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Have you ever played the game, Two Truths and a Lie? If not, this is a game where you list 3 things about yourself. Two of them are true and one is not. Then the other people that you’re playing with are supposed to guess which one of the 3 things is the lie.

Now, I’m not condoning lying, so please don’t hear that. Everything that we say should always be truth.

However, I bring up this game, because I believe that this game is similar to the game that the devil and because of the help of the devil, this culture is playing with us today.

What the enemy does is he will tell you the truth, but in the same matter slip in a lie. If we aren’t careful, we will believe it all as the truth.

You have probably heard the phrases, “My truth is…” or “that’s just their truth.” Or “know your truth.”

The problem with “my truth” is that the people who are saying this phrase don’t really even know what truth is.

Truth is not relative. If truth was relative, meaning that it changes based on the individual, then it wouldn’t be truth…it would just be an opinion or the way that someone perceives something. It there would be no such thing as truth. It wouldn’t exist.

The culture tells you, “do what makes you feel good!” You deserve it!

Just because something feels good, doesn’t mean it is good. Just because it feels right, doesn’t mean it is right. We are letting our feelings determine our truth.

To learn more about "My Truth vs. The Truth" check out this week's podcast episode!

17. It's Not Good to Do Life Alone16 May 202200:14:58

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Have you ever been blindfolded before? Or maybe the electricity went off in your house at night and you were trying to navigate your way through in the dark? You know that in either of these situations, it’s extremely hard to see when you have no idea where you are or what’s in front of you.

Yesterday, I walked into my room and because it was dark, I tripped over the vacuum cleaner that someone did not put away…okay, that I did not put away. Then as I righted myself, declaring I would never leave the vacuum there again, I walked into my bathroom…still no lights on, tripped over a sandal that my husband left on the floor and about face planted the wall.

After that…I finally got the bright idea…maybe I should turn the light on!

Sometimes in life, we find ourselves in positions like this…not that we are physically walking in the dark and need some sort of light, but maybe we are doing something that we have never done before and we have no idea what to do, where to go and it feels like we are walking in the dark…stumbling trying to find our way.

Maybe it’s simply that you know that God created you for a purpose, but you have no idea what that purpose is.

Or maybe it’s, you know what God is asking you to do, but you’re not sure how to do it.

Maybe God is calling you to start a ministry encouraging younger teen girls, but you have no idea where to start.

Maybe God is calling you to start a club at your school, but you have no idea what to do.

Or…maybe you know what to do, but you are holding yourself back from doing it, because it’s scary.

Ladies, God never intended for us to do life alone. That’s why the Bible talks so much about friendships and gives so many examples of someone coming alongside someone else to help guide them as they are on their journey.

For example, Samuel had Eli, Elijah had Elisha, Moses had Jethro, Esther had Mordechai, the 12 disciples had Jesus.

We all need people to come alongside of us to encourage us, especially during the teen years. You are facing things that you have never faced before in life and some of them can be quite challenging.

16. The Battle Against Anxiety09 May 202200:16:19

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

It’s no secret that fear and anxiety are plaguing teens today. A recently research study by Barna came out that about anxiety alone that said that 2 in 5 teens deal with anxiety.

That pressure can come from so many things: Teens are afraid to fail, they are anxious about making the right decisions, they don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, they have a need to be perfect or are pressured by expectations from their parents that they don’t feel like they can live up to.

If we’re not careful, anxiety can grip us making it hard to breathe, hard to sleep…causing us to be irritable and restless…not knowing what’s going to happen.

Ladies, know that anxiety doesn’t have to have its grip on you! You can take a stand against it and watch it let go of the hold it may have on your life. I encourage you to do the same thing when you feel that fear or anxiety…seek the Lord.

So, what do you do when fear and anxiety try to overcome you? It's time to wage war against anxiety and fear and take control over it!

Check out this week's podcast episode to learn how!

15. I know I Should Like the Way I Look, but I Don't.02 May 202200:16:23

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

There was a time in my teen years that really stands out to me about when I began to hate the way I looked. I was in 9th grade and why they did this, I still have no idea…but it was a terrible idea. In gym class—that had both guys and girls, they did body measurement tests in front of the whole class. When I’m talking body measurements, I mean like our weight, height, what percentage of fat we had on our bodies, they checked our flexibility, and also did a test of how many pull ups you could do.

I really didn’t think anything of it until the guy in front of me went to get tested. All I remember was that he could do 20 pull ups and that he weighed 90 lbs.

When it came to my turn to be tested, I could do zero pull ups and I weighed about 20 lbs more. I was mortified. I couldn’t understand how I weighed more than a boy.

But from that moment on, I struggled with what I thought about my body.

It didn’t help that the teen magazines that I would read at that time all talked constantly about diets and newest exercise trends.

If I can be honest with you, probably from the moment I woke up until the moment I went to sleep at night, what I thought about my body was constantly running in my mind. I became obsessed with pointing out every flaw I had, obsessed with comparing myself to all of the girls around me, and obsessed with trying to be the “perfect size.” It was a constant nightmare.

In this society that we live in, I’m sure that you have probably seen this before in someone that you know or maybe you have dealt with thinking negatively about the way you look. In our society, they seem to say, “If you’re skinny…I mean what is a thigh gap anyway…but if you’re skinny, you’re pretty and popular,” but if you are heavier, it seems to be a joke.

Ladies this is not okay!

God created all of us uniquely, not two of us…even if we are identical twins are exactly alike. We aren’t the same height or the same weight or have the same bone structure or the same hair color or eye color. God created all of us to be different shapes and sizes and guess what…He says that you’re beautiful!

14. Conquering the Mountains in Front of You25 Apr 202200:18:12

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Have you ever had something major you were facing right in front of you and it seemed like there was no way out of it? It almost seemed like the end of the world. Okay, so most of us can probably agree that when we first heard the news about COVID and how the whole world was shutting down, we felt like we were in a place like…how are we every going to bounce out of this. How are we ever going to live again? Is it the end of the world?

If we’re not careful, we can start to fear.

When we look in the Bible, there are several people who felt this way. The Israelites before David defeated Goliath. Daniel when he was facing the fiery furnace just for worshipping God. Elijah when Jezebel threatens to come after him…he actually wanted to end his life, because he was so afraid of her. But the person we’re going to focus on today is Timothy. We find his story in the books of 1 and 2 Timothy.

Timothy had a calling on his life to become a pastor. The thing about Timothy, though is that he was young…just 21 years old…not much older than you all.

And not only was Timothy a young pastor, but he was a pastor of a huge church that was growing even bigger very quickly. It was growing so fast that Timothy needed Paul’s mentorship in order to navigate the challenges that they were facing.

So first Timothy is about Timothy’s growing church.

Now, let's jump to second Timothy. Timothy now has another problem. Nero, who was the crazy emperor at the time starts a fire. You may have heard of the Great Fire of Rome. Nero, hated Christians. He hated that they didn’t serve his gods and bow down to him. So, after starting the fire that burned down much of Rome, in order to not take the blame for what he had done, turned around and blamed it on the Christians.

Because of all of this, the people in Timothy’s church began to leave the faith by the droves…and not only were they leaving the faith, but they were running for their lives. All of the Christians were being scattered. I couldn’t even imagine how Timothy must have felt.

He was facing a huge problem…not only was his congregation being threatened, but his life was being threatened as well.

Since God had placed Timothy in the charge of the church, Timothy couldn’t just leave and abandon his calling in life, so he had to figure out how to not only encourage the Christians that were still there to stand strong, he also had to overcome the fear he was facing personally.

There are times in our lives when the enemy will come up against us and he will throw weapon after weapon after weapon at us and if we aren’t careful, we can find ourself in the place that Timothy was in…not sure what to do and living our life in fear.

13. Removing the Mask18 Apr 202200:16:00

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

When you ask someone how they are doing, what is the standard response that they usually give back to you? “I’m fine.” Right?“

 But are they really?

We smile and pretend that everything is good, but on the inside, it’s not.

Some of us don’t have anyone we can talk to, so we keep everything inside while putting that mask back on every time we walk out the door.

I know this from experience.  I know as a teen, I was so good at this. I didn’t want to deal with the problems that I had. For those of you who don’t know my story. I grew up in a home where my dad was physically abusive and my parents did drugs right in front of us. My mom would leave for weeks at a time and we weren’t sure if she was coming back or not. So, for me, putting on that mask started at a young age.

I didn’t want to deal with the issue that I felt like nobody loved me.

That nobody liked me.

I didn’t want to deal with the issue that if any of my friends knew the real me that they would leave me, too.

I didn’t want to deal with the issue of thinking that the choices my parents made were my fault.

I didn’t want to deal with the issue that I honestly hated who I was, so I put on a mask.

I pretended to be someone I wasn’t. I pretended that my life was perfect and I had it all together, but on the inside it was eating away at me. I dealt with deep depression, because I couldn’t talk about anything I was walking through. I dealt with feeling numb and not feeling a thing. My smile never reached my eyes…it was all fake. I dealt with major panic attacks.

To learn more about how I took off the mask and what you can do if you struggle with hiding behind a mask, check out this week's episode.

12. Don't Be Afraid to Go First!11 Apr 202200:17:44

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." Mariann Williamson

I love this quote for so many reasons, but what I love most about it is the part that she says, “As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.”

I don't know if you have seen this before or if you have done this before...I know I have...but you're in youth service and the praise and worship music starts and nobody is singing...nobody is even paying attention. You want to sing, you want to be a part of it, but you're almost afraid that if you do, that people will see you as weird.

Or, maybe other students are singing, but you want to express your praise through raising your hands, but nobody else is and you aren't quite sure if you want to, because you don't want to be seen as weird.

But I want to encourage you to not be afraid to go first, because when you go first, you  unconsciously give others permission to go, too.

Psalm 34:1-4 says, "I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises. I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart. Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness let us exalt his name together. I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears."

In these verses God is telling us that when we call out to Him, He will answer us and free us from all our fears.

You were called to be difference-makers. You were called to be world-changers. Don't be afraid to go first!

11. Is Being Popular Really Worth It?04 Apr 202200:17:47

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Rachel was the most popular girl in school. She was beautiful. She had a massive friend group that adored her. She had the most popular guy in our grade swooning over her. Rachel was…perfect.

Or so it seemed.

Rachel made it her job in life to make my life and I’m sure many other’s lives miserable. She would take that time to make fun of me and call me names, something I sadly had to get used to.

She even went so far as to start a rumor about me saying that I started a rumor that Josh, the most popular guy in our grade, and I were dating. I remember the day very well. I walked into my classroom.

CJ stormed up to me and he was mad. He couldn’t believe that someone that he saw as a nobody would actually spread a rumor like that, and he let me know. It was a nightmare. Not only was I humiliated, but I was furious. If I can be honest, I didn’t even like CJ because he was so arrogant and then for him to yell in my face in front of the class, it was a nightmare.

As you can tell by this story, I was not one of the popular kids. I honestly never cared to be.

See, with Rachel, she seemed like she had it all together. She had put on a mask of beauty and perfection. One thing I didn’t realize, though, was that Rachel was hurting on the inside.

I don’t know her full story of what was going on in her life, but what I do know is the summer after middle school, Rachel had to move. She left behind all of her horses, her friends, her perfect life and had to start over.

I saw Rachel a couple years later at a high school function, and she had completely changed. She was no longer popular. Instead, she was insecure and lonely. She was living a life that I had never thought I would have seen from her. I didn’t get to talk to her that day, but a part of me wishes I could go back and encourage her.

Popularity…it’s one of those things that many of us wish we could have.

We want to feel like we’re beautiful. We want to feel like we are valuable. We want to fit in. We want to have friends. We want to feel like we belong.  It’s a sense that all of us have on the inside of us.

What is it that makes being popular so enticing? What is it that makes someone popular?

Is it because they have a massive friend group? Is it because everyone around them seems to adore them? Their life seems perfect.

But do these popular kids really have it all together? Are they really as perfect as we make them out to be? Or is there something else going on behind the scenes?

We all have a love shortage on the inside of us. Popularity pretends to fill that shortage for a while, but in the long run, it’s never really satisfying. The only one who can truly fill that void is Jesus.

How do we overcome the struggles of wanting to be popular?

124. How Do I Keep Peace When Life is Hard?03 Jun 202400:18:05

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone of you when I say that this world is crazy! And on top of that, there is a real enemy out there who wants nothing more than to steal our joy and our peace from us, to kill, and to destroy everything that we have. How do we keep our peace when life is hard. How do we walk through this life and win when we have an enemy who is out to get us?

We’re all going to face challenging circumstances in life. Many of us have heard about the story of the wise man who built his house on the rock and the foolish man who built his house on the sand. Storms came to both of their houses, but it was the wise man’s house that was still standing after the storm had passed. Storms come to everybody’s house, but it’s what we do in the midst of those storms that really make a difference. Can we actually keep peace when life is hard? The answer is, yes! We can! But how?

9. Taking Control of Your Thoughts Part 221 Mar 202200:16:41

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Our thoughts are so powerful. If we don’t control them, they can lead us to believe some pretty crazy lies.

I struggled with this for so many years…especially when it came to fear. Even after I became a Christian, I would watch all kinds of scary movies and then wonder why I had to fight off fear all the time.

Another type of fear that controlled me was the fear of rejection. I didn’t grow up in a Christian family that, honestly, they just didn’t know how to love us. I felt rejected. Like I wasn’t wanted.

I remember thinking that those people who were supposed to love me would eventually leave me. Or the people who were supposed to love me didn’t love me. And I used to think that something was wrong with me. I would tell myself all kinds of lies. I’m not good enough. I will never measure up. Nobody would ever love me.

And those lies caused me to close myself off and put up some pretty big walls around myself.

On last week’s episode of the UncommonTEEN Podcast, we saw how the woman with the issue of blood had taken control of her thoughts and how it lead to complete healing. The same is true for you!

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says, “Our weapons of warfare are mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

"Our weapons of warfare…"

There is a battle that is going on inside of our minds every single day. God has given us His Word, the Sword of the Spirit, to pull down those strongholds…and we’ll talk about what those are in a minute, but He gave us His Word to pull down strongholds, to cast down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.

Have you ever heard someone say something like, “You can’t get close to that person, because they have put up so many walls.”

That’s exactly what strongholds do to us. That word stronghold in the Greek means a fortress. Think of a castle from the Middle Ages…those castles has massive walls that surrounded them to keep out the enemy. Only the problem with strongholds, is they act as a prison, keeping you locked inside.

When in reality, if you have given your life to Jesus, He has already made you free and has given you the keys to unlock the door of the prison that is holding you captive.

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that God’s Word is living and powerful. It’s active and effective in changing our lives.

God’s Word is powerful enough to change our lives! Nothing else can transform our lives like the Bible can…because it is the true, living word of God!

Romans 12:2 says, do not be conformed to the patterns of this world…don’t take on their culture as your own, but instead by transformed by the renewing of Your mind…begin to change your mind and choose to start seeing things as God sees you! So that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God is for you. That last part that says, “So you may prove what is the good and accepta

8. Taking Control of Our Thoughts14 Mar 202200:17:59

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

“Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.”

We all know that there are good thoughts…thoughts that bring life. Thoughts that bring healing. Thoughts and encourage others or even ourselves.

Then there are thoughts that are toxic. Thoughts that bring pain, make us feel worthless, alone, anxious, discouraged. Thoughts that we aren’t good enough, that we aren’t pretty enough.

In this episode we’re talking about how to change those toxic thoughts into good thoughts.

But first, I want to share an account of someone in the Bible who struggled with her thoughts and how she was able to overcome them, change those thoughts and receive complete healing in her life.

We find her story in the book of Mark chapter 5 verses 25 though verse 34. You may have heard of her, we are talking about the woman with the issue of blood.

Not only did she feel bad physically, but she was an outcast socially and emotionally, she was deeply alone.

How did she go from deep despair to becoming completely healed?

She chose to change her thoughts by changing her words. Her words changed her actions. Her actions changed her life!

The same thing is true for you.

Is there a thought or maybe more than one thought that you have been struggling with? Maybe they are thoughts like:

  • I’m not pretty.
  • I’ll never be good enough.
  • I’m too fat….or too skinny.
  • I’m not smart.
  • I’m a total nobody.
  • I’m weird.
  •  I’m ugly.
  • I’m a disappointment.
  • Nobody likes me.
  • I’m worthless.

Let me first tell you, none of those are true. They are a lie from the enemy.

Ecclesiastes 3:10 says that God has made everything beautiful in its time. This is your time…God created you for this time…and whether you know it or not, you are pretty.

You are good enough.

You are beautiful just the way you are.

You are loved and accepted by our Heavenly Father.

You are not weird.

You are not a disappointment.

God looks at you through His eyes of love and says to you, “You are my daughter and I love you so much! Nothing you could ever do and nothing that has ever been done to you could ever change how much I love you!”

You are not worthless!

To learn more about the power of taking control of your thoughts, check out this week's episode.

7. Get Back Up! You're Stronger Than You Think!07 Mar 202200:16:47

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Sometimes in life, we have things happen to us that can cause us to become overwhelmed, or maybe stressed out or have some serious anxiety.

See, the devil knows that if he can get you overwhelmed and if he can get you stressed out or anxious, he can stop you from fulfilling your purpose in life.

My Pastor often says, “Somebody’s future won’t begin until you walk into it.” (Jim Frease)

“Seeing that you are here right now on earth at this time is proof that God saw a problem that only you could solve!” (Jim Frease)

Take a second to let that sink in...

There is a purpose that you are here on this earth!

Now, think about the people around you. How many of them are feeling this way: overwhelmed, stressed out, anxious? It’s almost like this is the new pandemic.

It seems like so many people are either running away from their problems, giving up, complaining, or blaming everyone around them for what’s going on. It seems like so many people these days are in division with one another.

Daniel 7:25 says, “And Satan shall speak words against the Most High God and shall wear out the saints.”

That verse, when it says, "saints," if you have given your heart to Jesus, it's talking about you. Satan is the one that I’s behind the attempt to wear you out…or overwhelm you, or cause you stress and anxiety.

So what can we do about it?

How do we overcome this overwhelm, this stress, this anxiety?

Can we even overcome it?

The answer is…yes, you can!

Micah 7:7-8. These verses are key for overcoming the overwhelm.

“But as for me, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; My God will hear me. Do not rejoice over me, my enemy; when I fall, I will arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord WILL be a light to me.”

6. There Is Always Hope! What If My Friends/Family Turn Their Back on God?28 Feb 202200:17:22

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Ladies, do you know someone who has recently walked away from the Lord? A friend or maybe a family member or even someone famous that you’ve heard of? I want you to know that there is always hope.

In today’s episode we talk about someone who did just that. They decided to walk away from God. Not only did they decide to walk away from God, but they also decided to go all in with the world and it about destroyed them. But…with God, there is always hope.

Zechariah 9:12 tells us, and this is God speaking, “Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. Even today I declare that I will restore double to you."

That word stronghold is talking about a pattern of thinking. In this case it's talking about a pattern of thinking that has become negative.

The word hope we use a lot to mean, "wishing for something," but true Bible hope means to expect good things. Expect it, because it IS coming!

So, we can think about this verse like this, "“Change your pattern of thinking from thinking the worst about this person...that they are never going to come back to God and start expecting it!

Do not let anything move you from that hope!

Ladies, there is hope!

I am so thankful to God that He didn’t give up on me...that He sent someone like you into my life to invite me to church where I was able to hear the Good News of Jesus for the first time.

I am so thankful that my friend didn’t give up on me. I encourage you, don’t give up hope for your friends or family members who have turned their backs on God.

In this week's episode, we talk about a story in the Bible that most of you have probably heard before, however we are going to see that it's more than just a story about a prodigal son, but it is also a story of hope!

5. Internet Best Friends: Protect Yourself Online21 Feb 202200:15:58

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Sensitive Information is shared in this week's Podcast Episode.

Recently, I heard a new trend that kind of blew me away.

If you listen to the intro of this Podcast, you know that it is my heart to help teen girls overcome real life issues in a way that stays true to who God created you to be. That’s exactly what we’re going to be doing this week…tackling a real-life issue that honestly isn’t talked about a lot.

  • Teens are spending an average of 8 hours a day on social media alone.
  • 46% of teens report being online constantly.
  • An average of 5+ billion snaps are created every day.
  • Females between the ages of 10-19 make up TikTok’s largest demographic.
  • 54% of teens said they’d be a lot more worried about social media if their parents knew exactly what was going on.

And this kind of leads us to to what we’re going to be talking about today. Many of the profiles we see on IG, TikTok, and Snapchat are fake.

You all may or may not know this latest trend we’re seeing on social media by teens, but teens today are going online to find their next IBF…or internet best friend and then when they find them, they meet up with their new IBF in person and record a dramatic video of the process.

As teens, I get it, you just went through the pandemic. It’s not always easy to get back into life since you had been isolated for so long. You want to meet new friends…and that’s okay.

There’s a quote that my pastor says, it is “If you want to find someone bad, you are going to find someone bad.”

Finding your next IBF is great when everything goes as planned, but this is also a breeding ground for online predators to take advantage of these teen girls. So, what I want to talk about today is how to protect yourself online so that you aren’t taken advantage of by these predators.

Now, know that I’m not trying to scare you with this or incite fear, but I want to help you with making wise choices so that you aren’t taken advantage of and hurt in the process.

When I searched the tearm #IBF on Instagram, I found that their were close to 900,000 posts about them. With the hashtag, IBFmeeting, it was over 130,000, IBFfinder had over 221,000 and you get the point.

When I looked at someone of the posts...which I share in this week's episode...ladies, there is a problem here…these posts, one are created by young teen girls who are desperate. They are sharing personal information about themselves…and that is exactly what online predators are looking for.

Another research study was recently done that shows that the percentage of people trying to entice minors online…anyone under the age of 18…with inappropriate materials has gone up 97% since the shut down in 2020. This includes predators manipulating teens to share their own explicit content online.

To learn more about how to protect yourself online from these predators, check out this week's episode.

3. What Do I Do When My Friends are Bad Influences?07 Feb 202200:18:18

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

This week, we’re going to talk about the importance in the quality of your friendships.

Sometimes in life, we are going to have to make the tough decision of letting some friends go.

I say tough, because if you have ever had to walk away from a friendship, you know it’s the farthest thing from being easy to do.

Sometimes those friends are as close to you as family. Sometimes it’s the fact that you’re comfortable in your friendships and you don’t want to lose your friends.

Other times fear might hold us back, because we think that we can help our friend make good choices instead of going down the path that they’re headed on.

One of the hardest things I believe that we will ever do in life is end a friendship or a relationship that is not healthy.

Have you ever heard the quote, “You become like the 5 people you spend the most time with. Choose carefully?”

I want you to think about this…have you ever been hanging around a friend who is negative…always complaining about everything and then afterward you find yourself complaining as well?

Or let’s change it. Have you ever been around someone who is super joyful and it lifted your spirits?

That’s exactly what that quote is saying. The more you hang around someone, the more you will act like them.

Now, I’m not saying that you can’t be nice to everyone or that you can’t engage in small talk with people who aren’t going in the same direction as you.

But what I am saying is those are not people that you want to spend the most time with. The people you spend the most time with need to be going in the same direction that you want to be going when it comes to your walk with God.

1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “Do not be deceived: evil company corrupts good habits.”

The reason that this verse starts off with “Do not be deceived,” is because it’s easy to think, “Their choices and their habits won’t effect me.”

But this verse very clearly tells us that we will eventually become like the people we hang around the most.

Proverbs 22:24-25 has a similar message. It says, “Make no friends with an angry man, and with a furious man do not go, LISTEN TO THIS: lest you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul.”

We become like those we hang around.

Proverbs 12:26 tells us, “The righteous…that’s you if you have given your heart to Jesus…should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray.

When you choose your friends, you are choosing what direction you will take in life.

What do you do when you need to walk away from bad influences?

How can you pray for those friends?

What can you do in order to bring better friends into your inner circle?

2. How Do I Share Jesus with My Friends?31 Jan 202200:17:13

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Many of us want to share Jesus with those around us, but it can be scary.

  1. Maybe we’re afraid they’ll ask questions that we can’t answer
  2. I struggle with my own faith
  3. I never learned how to
  4. I don’t know how to start the conversation

Let’s talk about these fears…because they are real!

Fear #1: What if they ask my a question I don't know how to answer?

First of all, you don’t have to have all the answers. Let them know that you don’t know the answer to the question…then from here, you can do a couple things:

You can connect them with your youth pastor or someone else who may know the answer.

Say, “Truthfully, I don’t know the answer, but I can connect you with someone who would know."

Then, it’s super important to do this part no matter what…is say, “All I know is I know who I was before I met Jesus and what He did in my life, and it changed me.”

Then go into sharing your story.

Fear #2:  I struggle with my own faith.
This is where being authentic is super important. They don’t expect you to be perfect, otherwise, you will turn them off from Jesus, because there is no way that they can be perfect. Tell them that you aren’t perfect, that you still mess up and then go into sharing your story.

Fear #3: I never learned how to.
That’s why I’m sharing this episode with you!!

Fear #4: I don’t know how to start the conversation that will lead to sharing my story. We'll talk about this a little later.

1 Peter 3:15 says, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."

Now, you may be asking…how to I share my story? What do say? How do you start the conversation?

Ask questions to genuinely get to know and care about them:

Then if you see a pain point or a passion point, ask them if you can pray for them.

A pain point is something they mention that is hard for them. Maybe a family member is not doing well or they had a family member pass away or they are failing a class that they really need to pass.

A passion point is maybe they have a solo at a choir concert or they have a gymnastics competition or they have a speech and it’s scary.

Ask them if you can pray for them. If they say yes, go ahead and pray for them. They don’t care if you have the right words, they are just blown away that you would ask them to pray for them. Don’t get held up with perfectionism. Believe God will give you the right words and if you mess up, who cares. They get to see a genuine, authentic relationship with Jesus. They get to see that they don’t have to be perfect. Perfection will turn them off from Jesus.

After you pray for them, here are a couple of questions you can ask them to lead that conversation in the direction of sharing Jesus.

  1. What are your thoughts on God?
  2. Do you have a good church that you go to?

Then answer the question yourself authentically and go into sharing your story.

1. Live Bold!24 Jan 202200:16:13

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Matthew 19:26-But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Have you ever had the opportunity to share Jesus with someone…like you knew that you knew that you knew that God had opened the doors, and this was the moment that you were supposed to walk through them, and share Jesus and you got scared? You didn’t do it?

Yeah, me, too! You’re not alone. In fact, the last time I remember this happening was about a year and a half ago. I had a lady ask me why I was so happy all the time and instead of sharing Jesus with her...my hands began to get sweaty, my face started turning red, the temperature in the room seemed to rise by about 100 degrees and I chickened out.

I had a problem, I believed a lie from the enemy that I didn’t have the right words.

The truth was, I was scared and instead of speaking God’s truth to myself in that moment:

2 Timothy 1:7- God did not give me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.

My mind went blank!

Today, we're talking about boldness.

Before we get into the practicals of what to do, I want to share with you our theme verse for UncommonTEEN: Acts 4:13 says, “The council members were astonished as they witnessed the bold courage of Peter and John, especially when they discovered that they were just ordinary men who had never had religious training. Then they began to understand the effect Jesus had on them simply by spending time with him.”

In this verse, we see that Peter and John had a bold courage. They didn’t have the bold courage, though, because they were naturally born with it. They received that bold courage because of spending time with Jesus.

Actually, Peter, if you remember the account of Jesus right before He goes to the cross doesn't just shy away from telling others about Jesus, but denies Jesus 3 times in one night!

Peter was so afraid…that same sweaty palms, red in the face, feeling like the temperature in the room just went up about 50 degrees, right? And he failed the test. He denied Jesus 3 times.

Ladies, we’re not alone….and I don’t know about you, but this gives me hope. If someone could deny Jesus…not just shy away from telling them about Jesus, but completely deny Him to wear He’s using profanity…and God still used Him to make that major impact we saw in Acts 4, He can use us, too!

Going back to Acts chapter 1. Let's look at what happened that transformed Peter from denying Jesus into sharing Jesus with such great boldness.

Acts 1:8 says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

This is what changed for Peter. In Acts 2:1-4, we see that He received the gift of the Holy Spirit on the inside of him and it gave him power to be a witness and share Jesus with great boldness.

They had so much boldness, that we see in Acts 4:13, that the crowd marveled at them. They weren’t experts, they weren’t bible sc

123. AMA: How Do I Share Jesus without Being Pushy?27 May 202400:20:24

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

On this week’s Ask Me Anything Episode, we are answering Chloe’s and Danika’s questions.

Chloes says, “I have a friend who is not sure what to believe. I want to persuade them to turn to God but I’m not really sure how to do it without sounding like I'm forcing them.

Danika says, “I have a question… I know this girl that is an atheist and she brought up a situation that made her question if the Lord is real. My question it was I sent to help her to turn to the Lord? And if so, how do I help her without pushing her?"

Know that no two people are the same, every conversation is going to look different and that’s okay! With what we’re going to talk about today, hopefully, you will be ready to crush those comfort zones and step into your God-given purpose as you share the Good News of Jesus with those around you.

Okay, so how do you even have a conversation with someone, especially a friend or a family member, to know if they are even open to hearing the Good News.  Again, no two people are the same—no two conversations are the same. Jesus healed some, He taught others, and to some gave a Word of Knowledge.

2 Types of Witnessing (Sharing Jesus)

  1. Confrontational-(I don’t suggest this with your friends or family members.) This is really for people who you see once, and you will most likely never see them again. For example, I’m going to Jamaica in a couple weeks to be sharing the Good News of Jesus with Jamaicans. This is the approach we will be using because chances are we will never see these people gain.
  2. Relational. You want to build a relationship with these people before you jump in to asking them about Jesus. This approach is all about making a connection with them. You connect with them, you listen to them, you care about them, you earn their trust. Wait a while before you bring up the topic of Jesus. Get to know them by asking questions. Never underestimate the power of conversations!

CARE: Connect, Ask Questions, Relate, Encourage

Connect with  them. "Hey, how are you doing?" and stop and really listen to how they are doing!

Ask questions-a lot of questions to get to know them better.

Relate to them where you can.

Encourage them.

When you find a pain point, ask them if you can pray for them or share your story with them!

51. She Did What? The Truth About Gossip10 Jan 202200:15:15

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Gossip Defined:

  • Worthless talk or rumors; especially about the personal or private affairs of another person that is said behind someone’s back.
  • Talking about someone when you have no power or will to help fix the problem

What is it that is so enticing about gossip?

  • It makes us feel important and special
  • It makes us feel like we’re wanted
  • It makes us feel like we fit in
  • We can impress others—get attention
  • It makes us feel powerful. Like we're in control.
  • It’s contagious

Gossip is one of the biggest tactics that the enemy uses to divide Christians.

We all have a natural curiosity and want to be in the know. We don’t like feeling left out of conversations.

But what’s so bad about gossip? If you have been on the receiving end of gossip, you understand all too well what’s so bad about gossip.

Proverbs 16:27-28-An ungodly person digs up evil and it is on his/her lips like a burning fire. A perverse person sows strife, and a person who gossips separates the best of friends.

Ladies when we are a part of gossiping, we are a part of allowing the enemy to do his work in dividing and destroying us Christians. It destroys friendships. It destroys relationships and in some cases it can destroy someone’s life and their future.

Proverbs 18:8 says The words of a gossiper are like tasty desserts...it feels so good to be a part of it. However, the verse then goes on to say that those words that we are using to gossip…they cut deep into the innermost part of the person we’re talking about.

If this is the case, though, why do so many of us Christians have a hard time with this?

As I said, it’s hard. We are naturally curious creatures. We want to be in the know. We don’t want to feel left out. Gossip is mysterious and exciting.

I don’t know about you, but I love a good mystery…movie or book, it doesn’t matter…but only if they are clean. I love them, because I want to know if I can solve the crime before the movie or the book tells me who really did it. It’s exciting and it’s mysterious. The same is true for gossip.

Proverbs 6:16-19 talks about 7 things that the Lord hates. Did you know that God actually does hate some things. He doesn’t hate people…but there are things that He does hate.

In this list it says:

  1. Arrogance
  2. Lying
  3. Murder
  4. A heart that comes up with wicked plans
  5. Feet that are quick to run to evil
  6. A false witness who speaks lies—this is talking about spreading rumors
  7. Gossip.

Does that seem crazy that God would hate gossip as much as He does murder?

Why do you think that God’s so against gossip? God is against anything that will hurt His kids. He loves you so much. He wants you to live a life of abundance.

Proverbs 18:21 says that death and life are in the power of the tongue.

If gossiping is something that you have a challenge with...or maybe you have a friend who seems to always come to you with gossip, check out this week's episode fo

50. Why Do I Feel So Alone?03 Jan 202200:18:27

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Why Do I Feel So Alone?

I feel so out of place. I feel so unloved. I feel left out, like no one wants to even talk to me. I don’t even know if I want to be around people. I can’t even hold a conversation. I feel sad all the time. I feel defeated. I feel hopeless. Why am I even here?

If you have ever said any of those things to yourself, you know what I’m talking about. Loneliness…it’s a hard place. And let me tell you, you’re not alone. So many girls your age feel the exact same way.

Sometimes that loneliness comes when we lose a relationship or maybe a loved one. One thing I talk about with my daughter is that in the teen years, your friends are going to choose to go one of two ways…they are either going to choose to go all in with God, or they are going to choose to follow the culture. When those friends, the ones that you have had since you were in kindergarten…or the ones that you were super close to begin to make decisions that are leading them away from God, it’s up to us to try to help point them in the right direction, but if they don’t want anything to do with it, we have to make the hard decision to let them go.

Sometimes the loneliness is sparked when a love one that we were closed to passes away and it’s tough.

Sometimes that loneliness is triggered by being excluded from friends, other teens our age, our family and when that happens it can make you feel like, “What’s wrong with me?”

First of all, let me just tell you…there is nothing wrong with you. You are amazing and that’s not a lie. That is truth. You have the creator of the universe who planned out every little detail about you before He even formed the world. Jeremiah 1:5, God is telling this to Jeremiah, but it’s just as much for you as well. He says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. I approved of you as my chosen instrument. Before you were born, I set you apart and I called you to be a difference maker.” I’m totally paraphrasing that last part, but it’s truth!

The biggest reason, though, that we feel lonely, is because it’s an outright attack from satan himself. He wants nothing more to make you think that you are worthless so that you detach yourself and isolate yourself from everyone else. And…if the enemy wants to attack you, you know how he does it? He uses people.

Check out this week's episode and learn how you can overcome loneliness once and for all!

49. The Lies of the Enemy Part 327 Dec 202100:18:52

Have a question you want me to answer on the podcast? Ask Here!

Every single day each one of us has between 50,000 and 70,000 thoughts and how Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:5 that we need to take every one of those thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ.

The enemy’s number one tactic is to feed our minds lies. Lies that tell us that we’re worthless, we’re not important, nobody likes us, we’ll always be alone, nobody loves us, we’re ugly, we’re a failure, we’re not accepted.

In order to take those thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ, Ephesians 6:10-18 tells us that we need to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might and we do that by putting on whole armor of God-God’s fighting suit, that you may be able to stand against the mind schemes of the devil.

In Part 1, we talked about the Belt of Truth and how it is the written word of God. We talked about the breastplate of righteousness and how that is truly understanding our identity in Christ.

Then in Part 2, we talked about the shoes of peace. In the world we live in today, this is so vital! Then the last piece of armor we talked about what the shield of faith.

The next piece of armor that we are going to talk about is the Helmet of Salvation.

That word salvation means so much more than just saved and going to heaven. Salvation means, deliverance, safety, preservation, a sound mind, and healing.

We put on the helmet of Salvation by renewing our mind to the Word of God.

The Roman soldier’s helmet was not just an average helmet, but it was a work of art. They were decorated with very intricate detail. Not only was it engraved with beautiful artwork, but they also had plumes on their helmets that were huge and colorful.

Our salvation is like that! It is a beautiful gift that God has given us!

When we are confident in our salvation…in who God says that we are, people will notice just like they noticed the Roman soldier’s helmet.

When we haven’t renewed our mind to the Word of God, when we don’t know who it is that we are, the enemy is able to cause destruction in our lives.

He is able to steal our blessings. He tells us lies and because we aren’t sure what the Word of God actually says about it, we believe those lies.

The next piece of Armor that we need to put on is the Sword of the Spirit.

Now we talked about how the Belt of Truth is the Word of God…and now it’s saying that the Sword of the Spirit is also the Word of God. What’s the difference?

The difference is this…the Belt of Truth is the written Word of God…your Bible.

Well, the Sword of the Spirit is the revealed Word of God.

Have you ever been reading your Bible or sitting in church and a Bible verse just pops out at you and it just speaks to your heart so strongly? That was a word that was revealed to you. That is the Sword of the Spirit.

Only the rhema or revealed Word of God can run the devil off, not just the written word.

The next piece of armor is the Lance of Prayer and Supplication

Ephesians 6:18-praying always with all praye
