| Wrongly Convicted: The Case of Sam Hallam and the Fight for Justice | 17 Oct 2026 | 00:44:11 | |
Today I’m joined by Matt Foot, a criminal defence solicitor and Co-Director of APPEAL a legal charity that fights wrongful convictions as we discuss some of the cases that have raised serious questions about our criminal justice system. We begin with Sam Hallam, who was just seventeen when he was convicted of murder. He spent seven years in prison before his conviction was quashed, and Matt represented him in the fight to clear his name. We also talk about other major cases Matt has been involved in, including that of Andy Malkinson, who spent seventeen years in prison for a rape he did not commit before his conviction was overturned. On 26 October at 9pm watch Matt as he discusses the Sam Hallam case as part of the Crime & Investigation series 'Convictions Gone Bad with Will Mellor'. These cases raise difficult questions about how innocent people can be convicted, the devastating impact of wrongful imprisonment, and what happens when someone tries to challenge a conviction and prove their innocence. It’s a fascinating and important conversation with someone who has worked at the heart of some of the UK’s most significant miscarriage of justice cases. Convictions Gone Bad with Will Mellor airs on Mondays at 9pm weekly exclusively on CRIME+INVESTIGATION. The Sam Hallam case airs on 26 October at 9pm as part of this series. | The Truth Behind Closed Doors : Episode 553 | 15 Oct 2026 | 00:28:49
In almost ten years of making the UK True Crime Podcast, I’ve only covered male victims of domestic abuse once before. The vast majority of domestic abuse victims are women abused by men, and that reality should never be overlooked. But in this episode I wanted to tell the stories of two men who suffered horrific abuse at the hands of their female partners. Both cases are deeply upsetting, and both men faced enormous difficulties in speaking out and being believed. I think it’s important to recognise that domestic abuse can happen to anyone, and that every victim deserves to be heard, supported and protected, regardless of their gender. ManKind Initiative (help for male victims of domestic abuse) Refuge (supporting those suffering domestic abuse) I release new episodes of the UK True Crime Podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me for the next story on Tuesday. | The Rumour Which Led To Murder : Episode 552 | 12 Oct 2026 | 00:26:42
In this episode from Sunderland, I tell the story of Barry Sewell, a man whose life became caught up in a rumour with devastating consequences. The case raises important questions about the dangers of unsubstantiated allegations, how quickly rumours can spread, and what happens when people decide to take the law into their own hands. When does suspicion turn into vigilantism, and what happens when people decide they can act as judge and jury? | Interview with Tom Wood: 40 Years as a Senior Detective and Author | 10 Oct 2026 | 00:48:02
In this episode, I’m joined by one of my real true crime heroes in Tom Wood, a retired senior police officer who spent almost 40 years in policing, working on some of Scotland’s most significant murder investigations. Tom has worked on some of Scotland’s most infamous murders and was Officer in Overall Command of a national investigation into the murders of five young Scottish women in the 1970s, including the deaths of Edinburgh girls Helen Scott and Christine Eadie, the notorious ‘Worlds End Murders’, which he wrote about in his book that was published in 2024. Tom is now a successful true crime author, sharing his experiences and knowledge through his writing. And as you’ll discover, he is a brilliant storyteller, sharing his experience and fascinating insights into the realities of investigating serious crime. We had far too little time to cover everything I wanted to ask him, but I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and could happily have carried on for hours. A gang of armed robbers terrorised Bristol for more than a year, targeting banks, building societies and post offices with shotguns and other weapons. But how did they operate, and how did police finally bring them down? In this episode, I look at the robberies, the victims and the remarkable covert operation that eventually led to the gang's arrest and imprisonment - it is quite a story. It’s the world’s largest uncut diamond and one of the Natural History Museum’s most important pieces. When a young window cleaner is arrested a few months after the theft, his family is thrown into turmoil. David Knight will protest his innocence until the day he dies, but it’s the start of a much bigger story. | The Friend Who Led Him To His Death : Episode 550 | 05 Oct 2026 | 00:28:11
Today’s story takes us to Plymouth, where we look at the tragic story of Callum Hill and the events surrounding his death. At the heart of the story is a personal dispute between two men and the seemingly futile idea that problems can be settled by arranging a fight. What begins as an argument driven by pride, ego and a refusal to back down ultimately has consequences far beyond the people involved in the original grievance. It is also a story about friendship, trust and how easily someone can become caught up in a situation that was never theirs to begin with. | The Solicitor & The Builder - Revisited | 03 Oct 2026 | 00:24:23
A building project that went badly wrong would lead to a lengthy and costly legal dispute between builder Michael Chudley and his customer, Christopher Sear. As the court case dragged on for years, the consequences for Chudley and his partner became increasingly serious, with both of them losing their homes. As the financial and personal pressures mounted, Chudley began looking for someone to blame for what had happened. But where would that search for answers lead, and what would happen next? | True Crime Catch Up - October 2026 | 02 Oct 2026 | 00:37:09
True Crime Catch Up is back! I'm delighted to say that True Crime Catch Up is back with a brand-new episode, as I sit down with Stuart Blues, host of the British Murders podcast, for episode one of our new monthly series. If you haven't listened before, it's a chance for the two of us to get together and chat about different aspects of true crime, from individual cases to our own experiences of researching and presenting them. In this episode, we each talk about three cases we've covered on our podcasts that have stayed with us for a number of reasons. Some have affected us more than others, and we reflect on why these particular stories have remained in our minds long after recording them. It's a slightly different format from our usual podcasts, with a more relaxed conversation, a few personal reflections and, inevitably, a few laughs along the way. We're now releasing True Crime Catch Up on the first Saturday of every month, and I'm really looking forward to getting together with Stuart regularly to explore more true crime stories and topics. I release new episodes of the UK True Crime Podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me for the next story on Tuesday. Sixteen-year-old Ruth Wilson disappeared after travelling by taxi to Box Hill in Surrey. She had skipped school and, after being dropped off, was last seen standing alone in the rain on a quiet bridleway as darkness was falling. Ruth had been experiencing difficulties in her personal life, having recently discovered the truth about her biological mother's death, something that reportedly had a significant impact on her. Friends also described her as someone who had talked about running away and starting a new life. But what actually happened to Ruth remains unknown. Did she deliberately disappear, hoping to leave her old life behind? Was she struggling with her emotions and considering ending her life? Or did she encounter someone on Box Hill and come to harm? | The Secret in the Cellar : Episode 548 | 28 Sep 2026 | 00:31:02
Carol Jarvis was a woman whose life was shaped by her family and, later, by a degenerative illness which left her increasingly dependent on others. As her health deteriorated, her husband took on the role of her carer, looking after her at home as she became less able to care for herself. But behind the closed doors of the family home, things were not quite as they appeared. Carol’s children began to notice differences in their mum's condition, particularly when comparing the times she was cared for by her husband with those when they looked after her themselves. Small inconsistencies began to raise questions, but confronting their Dad was far from easy. When another woman entered the picture, the situation became even more complicated. What followed would expose a disturbing relationship, a bizarre living arrangement and a series of events which would eventually lead police to a devastating discovery inside the family home. This is the story of Carol Jarvis, the questions raised by those closest to her, and the shocking truth that eventually emerged. | The Graveyard - Revisited | 26 Sep 2026 | 00:23:52
Note: This epiosde was originally released in February 2022. High Wycombe isn't somewhere you would necessarily associate with violent crime, but in this case an apparently ordinary churchyard became the setting for a brutal and completely unnecessary murder. Lee Gillespie found himself caught up in a complicated situation involving jealousy, relationships and misplaced loyalty. What began as tension between people who knew each other would eventually escalate into violence, leaving Lee dead and several people facing the consequences of what happened. This is a story about relationships that had become increasingly complicated, decisions that had devastating consequences and a confrontation that ended in a tragic death. | Murder At The Wrong House : Episode 546 | 21 Sep 2026 | 00:29:01
The story today is from Cheshire, when two childhood friends visit a family property, Boarded Barn, unaware that their lives are about to be caught up in a terrifying chain of events. This is a case involving mistaken identity, an extraordinary sequence of events and a murder investigation that would eventually uncover the truth. It’s a story that raises some difficult questions about chance, circumstance and how two completely innocent people became caught up in something that had nothing to do with them. | The Business Partner Who Wasn't Who He Seemed : Bonus Episode | 19 Sep 2026 | 00:38:44
In 2005, Jim Phillips co-founded a marketing company with his best friend. The business grew quickly, securing major contracts and working with high-profile international clients. But behind the success, Jim began to notice increasingly strange behaviour from his business partner. What followed was an extraordinary web of deception involving fake contracts, impersonated bank officials, claims of connections to the Chinese government and even a fabricated story about having cancer. Jim eventually discovered that much of what he had been told was a lie. In this interview, Jim talks openly about what happened, how he began to realise that things weren't adding up, and the impact of discovering that someone so close to him had been living a double life. It really is an incredible story. I release episodes of the UK True Crime podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please join me for the next episode on Tuesday. | The Man Behind The Blindfold : Episode 545 | 17 Sep 2026 | 00:26:36
She spent more than 100 hours with the man she believed she loved - but she never saw his face. Kye Fortune was, to the woman at the centre of this case, a real person. They had built a relationship online and eventually met in person, but only on the condition that she wore a blindfold. What followed would lead to one of the strangest criminal cases in the UK, involving deception, identity, trust and consent. In this episode, I tell the story of Gayle Newland and the woman who believed Kye Fortune was real. I release new episodes of the UK True Crime Podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me for the next story on Tuesday. I’ll also be releasing a bonus episode on Sunday - an interview with the victim of an astonishing fraud case. It’s a fascinating and very personal conversation, so I hope you’ll join me for that too. | The Murder of an Identical Twin : Bonus Episode | 12 Sep 2026 | 00:50:38
What would it be like to lose your identical twin to murder? In this episode, I talk to Nick Dawson, whose identical twin, Simon, was murdered in the most dreadful attack in 1998. I found this conversation incredibly moving and, at times, very emotional. Nick takes us back to his brother’s childhood and talks about the man Simon was before his life was so brutally taken away. We also discuss the murder itself and the devastating impact it had on Nick and those who loved his brother. But there is another extraordinary part of Nick’s story. He has met the men who killed his brother. Nick tells me about those meetings, what it was like to come face-to-face with the people responsible for his twin’s death, the questions he wanted answered, and what those encounters meant to him. It is a deeply personal conversation about murder, grief, memory, forgiveness and the search for answers, told by someone who lost the person who, in so many ways, was the closest person in the world to him. 1, Buy Nick's outstanding book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Face-Finding-Justice-Murdered-Brother/dp/1837732426 2, Nick is a voluteer for this charity: https://restorativejustice.org.uk/ 3, Nick is an ambassador for this charity: I release episodes of the UK True Crime podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please join me for the next episode on Tuesday. | Interview With Top Crime Reporter Martin Brunt : Bonus Episode | 05 Sep 2026 | 00:52:57
In this bonus episode, I chat with top crime reporter, Martin Brunt. Martin spent 36 years at Sky News and built such a reputation for contacts that, during the 2006 Ipswich serial murders, a police press officer reportedly told a rival journalist: 'Call Martin Brunt. He knows everything before we do.' Martin Brunt joined Sky for its launch in 1989, reported from the Gulf and Balkan wars, then became one of Britain's best-known crime reporters, covering cases including Fred and Rose West, Sarah Payne, Jill Dando, Madeleine McCann and the Hatton Garden raid. His book, 'No One Got Cracked Over the Head for No Reason', opens up his notebook on the victims, detectives, villains, sources, errors and ethical choices behind those headlines, and asks why some crimes seize the public imagination while others barely register. Martin stepped back from full time reporting in 2025, but retirement seems to have evaded him: he remains a Sky crime commentator and, with Helen Fospero, co-hosts the award-winning True Criminals podcast. Minutes before taking his own life, Michael Ryan looked back on the devastation he had caused in Hungerford. He had killed 16 people and injured 15 others. Then he told the police negotiator: “I wish I had stayed in bed.” In this episode, I look back at what happened that day, the people whose lives were changed forever, and the events that unfolded as a quiet town found itself at the centre of a tragedy that shocked the country. I also look at some of the lesser-known details of the case and the questions that remained long after the shooting had ended. | Revisited - A Pact With The Devil | 29 Aug 2026 | 00:23:18
Note: This epiosde was originally released in August 2023. Detectives believed they had identified the murderer, and when they entered the bedroom of 18-year-old Danyal Hussein in south-east London, they found something extraordinary. Among his belongings was a handwritten note, signed in his own blood, which described a pact he claimed to have made with a demon called Lucifuge Rofocale. According to the beliefs surrounding black magic, Lucifuge Rofocale was said to be in charge of the government and treasury of Hell, acting on the orders of Lucifer. The pact Hussein had written described a chilling bargain: he would murder six women every six months in return for financial rewards, including the promise of winning the lottery. What detectives had discovered would give them a disturbing insight into the thinking of the teenager they believed was responsible for two brutal murders. | Revisited - There Is No Justice In Death | 22 Aug 2026 | 00:29:23
Note: This epiosde was originally released in October 2024. Vikki Thompson lived in a village near Oxford with her husband Jonathan, two young children and the family dog, Daisy. At about 4pm one Saturday afternoon, Vikki took Daisy for her usual afternoon walk in the pretty countryside close to where she lived. Half an hour later, Daisy returned home with no sign of Vikki which was most unusual. Jonathan knew something was wrong and headed out to look for his wife where he was joined by others in the village. At just before 7.15pm Vikki was finally found by the railway embankment, but she had been attacked, suffering terrible injuries and despite an air ambulance taking her to hospital in Oxford, just six days later Vikki had died of her injuries. In this episode of the UK true Crime podcast I ask just who killed Vicki - and why? | Lost Evidence. Unanswered Questions. The Death Of Ed Cornes - The Inquest/Where are we Now? : Episode 4/4 | 15 Aug 2026 | 00:30:04
Welcome to the final episode - for now, anyway - of this special four-part series of the UK True Crime Podcast, where I explore the life and death of 19-year-old Ed Cornes. Today, we look at the inquest into Ed’s death, the Met Police referring themselves to the IOPC over their handling of the investigation, and I ask the question: where are we today? If you have missed the other three episodes, 19 year old Ed Cornes had only just begun the next exciting chapter of his life when, in October 2021, he arrived at University College London with ambitions of becoming a barrister. But less than 48 hours later, those ambitions were cut tragically short when paramedics were called to a hotel in King's Cross, just half a mile from his university accommodation, where they found Ed dead. At the time of his death, Ed was in the company of two men in their fifties - strangers he had met only a few hours earlier. If you have any information at all that can help us find out any more about what happened to Ed, please contact in the strictest confidence: 1, Ed's family via Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/Da8cL06MHmq/ 2, The Met Police: opthrupp@met.police.uk 3, Me: Adam@uktruecrime.com I release episodes of the UK True Crime podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me on Tuesday for the next episode. | A Crime of Pure Evil : Episode 535 | 13 Aug 2026 | 00:26:38
The murder of Sadie Hartley is a shocking story of jealousy, obsession and a carefully planned killing. Sadie was a successful businesswoman from Lancashire who was attacked and murdered on her own doorstep. What followed was a complex investigation which uncovered a plot that had been developing for months. This episode looks at Sadie's life, the events that led to her murder, the investigation that followed and how police eventually uncovered the truth behind what had happened. Above all, this is the story of a woman who was simply going about her life, completely unaware of the danger that was developing around her. | Lost Evidence. Unanswered Questions. The Death Of Ed Cornes - Stephen Port Investigation : Episode 3/4 | 08 Aug 2026 | 00:39:09
Stephen Port was a serial killer who murdered four men in Barking, East London, between 2014 and 2015. In this episode, I examine the failings in the police investigation into Stephen Port and ask whether the Metropolitan Police repeated some of the same mistakes in their handling of Ed Cornes' death. It's a thought-provoking episode that raises important questions about policing, accountability, and whether the lessons from the Port investigation were truly learned. | Introducing...The Surgeon of St Helena | 05 Aug 2026 | 00:32:15
What happens when a controversial surgeon arrives on one of the world’s most remote islands? St Helena, a tiny British territory in the South Atlantic, is famous for Napoleon’s exile and for Jonathan the tortoise, the world’s oldest living land animal. Journalist Luke Jones, who you might remember from The Pitcairn Trials, is back investigating another shocking scandal. He travelled to St Helena to speak to Islanders who were meant to benefit from the arrival of a top orthopedic surgeon 2015. Instead, residents say he caused devastating harm and are now in a fight for justice. | Bonus Episode : Inside the Suzy Lamplugh Investigation: Interview With Ex-Detective Mike Barley | 27 Jul 2026 | 00:56:47
To mark today, the 40th anniversary of Suzy Lamplugh's disappearance, last week I sat down last week to chat with former Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Mike Barley. Mike was one of the first officers involved in the investigation, helping to establish the original incident room at Fulham Police Station within hours of Suzy being reported missing. He remained closely involved with the case for more than 12 years, following countless leads, investigating reported sightings, working with Suzy's family and later focusing on convicted murderer and rapist John Cannan. It's a fascinating interview where Mike shares behind-the-scenes insights into one of Britain's most enduring missing person investigations, including the remarkable story of an afternoon spent interviewing John Cannan in prison, during which Cannan briefly admitted killing Suzy before immediately withdrawing his confession. Mike and co-author Russell Barnes have recently published a new book, Suzy Lamplugh: The Inside Story of Britain's Most Notorious Missing Person Investigation, drawing on Mike’s decades of first-hand experience of the case. You can buy the book on Kindle by following the link below. I'll be back as normal on Friday for the next episode of the UK True Crime podcast, so do join me then. | Suzy Lamplugh: 40 Years Without Answers : Episode 530 | 27 Jul 2026 | 00:35:42
Forty years ago today, estate agent Suzy Lamplugh disappeared after leaving her office in Fulham to meet a client known only as 'Mr Kipper'. She has never been seen again. In this special anniversary episode, I revisit one of Britain's most enduring mysteries, examining Suzy's life, the investigation, the suspects, and where the case is at four decades later. In a second episode also released today, I interview former Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Mike Barley about this case. There is nobody out there more qualified to provide insight than Mike who was one of the first officers involved in the investigation, helping to establish the original incident room at Fulham Police Station within hours of Suzy being reported missing. He remained closely involved with the case for more than 12 years, following countless leads, investigating reported sightings, working with Suzy's family and later focusing on convicted murderer and rapist John Cannan. | Lost Evidence. Unanswered Questions. The Death Of Ed Cornes : Episode 1/4 | 25 Jul 2026 | 00:28:34
Welcome to this special four-part series of the UK True Crime Podcast, where I explore the life and death of 19-year-old Ed Cornes. Ed had only just begun the next exciting chapter of his life when, in October 2021, he arrived at University College London with ambitions of becoming a barrister. Throughout this series, I'll speak to Ed's family and friends - the people who have fought tirelessly to uncover the truth about exactly what happened to him. Together, we'll examine the events leading up to his death, the police investigation that followed, and the many questions that still remain unanswered today. If you have any information at all that can help us find out any more about what happened to Ed, please contact in the strictest confidence: 1, Ed's family via Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/Da8cL06MHmq/ 2, The Met Police: opthrupp@met.police.uk 3, Me: Adam@uktruecrime.com Next Sunday, I sit down with Ed's mum, Miriam, and his best friend, Sam, to learn more about the young man behind the headlines and the profound impact his death has had on those who loved him. I hope you'll join me for this episode. | Daniel Khalife : Spy, Soldier or Fantasist? | Episode 529 | 23 Jul 2026 | 00:32:32
You will probably remember Daniel Khalife for his extraordinary escape from HMP Wandsworth. But his story started long before that. In this episode, I look at how a young British Army soldier became caught up in a world of espionage, the events that led to his arrest, and the remarkable prison escape that made headlines around the world. It's a story of ambition, deception and some surprisingly old-fashioned spycraft. I release episodes of the UK True Crime podcast every Tuesday and Friday, so please do join me again on Tuesday for the next regular episode and do join me on Sunday for the first episode of my four part series about the tragic death of Ed Cornes. | The Bogus Doctor : Episode 527 | 16 Jul 2026 | 00:27:43
We all trust our doctors, don't we? In many ways, we have little choice. We rely on them to diagnose illness, offer advice and make decisions that can have a profound impact on our lives. But in today's episode of the UK True Crime podcast, I look at the extraordinary story of a doctor who wasn't at all what she seemed. For more than two decades, she practised medicine in the UK despite not being properly qualified, exposing serious failures in the systems designed to protect patients. It's a story of deception, misplaced trust and missed opportunities - and one that raises uncomfortable questions about how such an astonishing fraud was allowed to continue for so long. What goes on inside the mind of a killer? In this special episode, I'm joined by top forensic psychologist Kerry Daynes, who has spent her career assessing and treating some of the UK's most dangerous offenders. We talk about dangerous criminals, manipulation, violent crime, and what she's learned from sitting face-to-face with people most of us hope never to meet. | The Drugs Mule : Episode 525 | 09 Jul 2026 | 00:28:42
Melissa Reid and Michaella McCollum became known around the world as the "Peru Two" after they were caught trying to smuggle 11 kilograms of cocaine out of Peru. They said they had been drawn into the operation by an organised crime gang and felt they couldn't back out, while others argued they had knowingly taken a huge risk in return for money. Their arrest made headlines across the globe and sparked years of debate about where the line lies between exploitation and personal responsibility. In this episode, I look beyond the headlines to explore how two teenagers ended up at the centre of one of the most talked-about drug trafficking cases of recent times, and why their story still divides opinion today. | The Stalker Who Walked Free : Episode 524 | 06 Jul 2026 | 00:29:06
"Is it fair that a young lady who dresses to attract, the queen bee attracting the drones, the queen bee that dresses to kill... cries out foul because somebody finds her attractive?" Shockingly, those were the words of the defence barrister during the trial. Understandably, this sparked widespread outrage at the time and remains one of the most extraordinary examples of victim blaming in a British courtroom. A chance encounter with a stranger turned Perry Southall's life into a nightmare. What followed was a relentless campaign of stalking that left her living in fear and exposed serious flaws in the way the justice system dealt with dangerous offenders. Perry's courage in speaking out helped change the conversation around stalking in Britain, making this one of the country's most important stalking cases.
