An Unlikely Contract Killer; Episode 406
27 Aug 2024
00:29:02
Local man 38 year old Graeme Woodhatch was at the Royal Free hospital in London for a routine operation when he collapsed and died whilst on the phone outside the ward. But when medics looked more closely at Graeme's injuries, it turned out that he had been shot four times, seemingly by a professional contract killer. But who would have wanted to kill Graeme and why? In the episode this week we follow the twists of the investigation as a most unlikely killer is revealed.
Last week we heard how Marian Bates was murdered at her jewellery shop in Nottingham in front of her husband Victor and daughter Xanthe during a botched armed robbery. One of the criminals who was sent to prison for 13 years in connection for conspiracy to rob Marian’s jewellers was Craig Moran. And in April 2017, Moran was out of prison and looking to make up for the lost years behind bars. In the episode this week, we follow his organised crime career from his release to the current day.
It was a bright winters day in Sheffield at about 4pm as two friends were walking to return a drill bit to a tool factory. As the walked, they saw something just off the pavement in the hedges – it hadn’t been covered up and was easily spotted. It was a three foot holdall.
The two men who found it carried it down the road, thinking it contained something valuable like an engine; it was certainly big enough. The bag was covered by a bedding sheet tied with rope and the body was wrapped in polythene. They undid the rope, unzipped the bag, peeled open the polythene and got the shock of their lives. They had found a badly decomposed body - a body that was soon confirmed to be that of a man who had been murdered a number of years before.
Just who had dumped the body in this area where it would easily be found. And who had killed him - and why?

The peace and remoteness of The Fens, in the east of England is a big draw to many. And it was to Connie and Janice Fenn, who enjoyed their life of solitude breeding whippets. He says no and many believe his conviction to be unsafe. But if Benguit wasn't responsible just who was - there are a number of suspects.....
From Bad Women: The Blackout Ripper Stalks London’s War-Torn Streets
12 Oct 2022
00:16:15
Here’s a preview of Bad Women: The Blackout Ripper.
Over a single week in February 1942, a depraved serial killer stalked London’s dark and WWII bomb-ravaged streets, hunting for victims in the city’s bars and clubs. But the victims of the so-called Blackout Ripper are now all but forgotten.
Using new research from police files, court transcripts and exhaustive genealogical studies, season 2 of Hallie Rubenhold’s Bad Women reconstructs the lives of the women The Blackout Ripper brutally attacked and murdered and examines why their deaths were swept from view.
In warm weather, Bournemouth on the south coast of England is a nice place to spend some time. On the summer evening when we join the story, 26 year old Jong-Ok Shin was walking home from a Bournemouth nightclub, and just metres from the door of her home when she was attacked and she tragically died from her injuries. There were no witnesses to this crime.
Shortly afterwards, local drug addict Omar Benguit was arrested and convicted of murder and over 20 years later he is still in prison. But was he guilty of this dreadful crime?

It was almost 5am on a wet and murky morning on an estate just outside Sutton Coldfield. This week, we head to the north-west of England and a local theatre group. The theatre is a serious business here and the productions put on are of a very high quality, but it is also very sociable. Live Interview With Author Jason Wilson at CrimeCon London
19 Jun 2022

At CrimeCon London last weekend, I had the pleasure of interviewing author Jason Wilson about his excellent new book, 'The Old Man And Me'. In front of a live audience, we chatted about why he wrote his book about growing up and living with his gangster father.
The book is no nonsense and talks about the reality of crime, not the glamourised versions you hear about elsewhere, and in this interview Jason was very open about his life. I hope you enjoy and there is link to the book below.
