Finally, Charles Dickens and the Marvel Universe are together at last. Ebenezer Scrooge uses time travel to explore alternate universes. Today we climb a tech tree to travel Beyond the Sun. Dennis K. Chan focuses an entire game around the usually-ancillary tech tree to develop something very unique. Then we discuss where the majority of our attention is during a game. A game board can sprawl across half a dozen areas, and sometimes our focus is across all of them. We explore games that overfocus on one part, overproduce parts that don't get enough attention, and talk about where the game is really played. | 116. Retro Review: Rococo | 05 Jun 2023 | 00:35:56
The Rococo period, which emerged in the early 18th century in Europe, was a highly ornamental and elegant artistic and architectural style that replaced the grandeur and formality of the Baroque era. Characterized by delicate and asymmetrical designs, pastel colors, and a focus on frivolity and pleasure, Rococo art sought to create a sense of lightness and enchantment. It celebrated the aristocratic lifestyle, depicting scenes of leisure, love, and nature, often incorporating elements of fantasy and mythology. The period's intricate decoration was seen in lavish interiors, furniture, sculpture, and painting, reflecting the tastes of the ruling elite. However, Rococo's emphasis on opulence and superficiality also drew criticism for its lack of substance and excessive indulgence, leading to its eventual decline in favor of more restrained Neoclassical styles. Unlike this description, the game of Rococo is no more superficial and is incredibly full of substance. It is, however, an absolutely excessive indulgence, especially the overtly lavish deluxe edition. Marco.... Polo.... Marco.... Polo... On today's episode of Two Wood for a Wheat, we wander across the Mongol empire, searching for efficiencies, hidden player powers, and precious jade. How does Simone Luciani and Danielle Tascini's sequel hold up to the original Marco Polo? Find out from a novice and a 50+ play veteran. We then discuss what's the right number of plays -- to understand how a game works, to know if you like a game, to review a game. And if you love a game, how many plays will you get out of it? I always liked the number fifty. Imagine five ice cream cones. Then imagine five ice cream cones 10 times. On our fiftieth episode, we review the formidable dice drafting game by Italian designers Danielle Tascini and David Turczi, Tekhenu: Obelisk of the Sun. To continue in our thread of bad board game titles, this roughly translates to Obelisk: Obelisk of the Sun. We really bring balance in our opinions of the game. Then we each look at our 10 most anticipated games coming out of Essen Spiel Digital. I have never seen such a fantastical theme. Cats that desire order over chaos, patterns over randomness, and who can see in reds and pinks. Today we're reviewing Calico, a powerful tile-laying pattern-matching game in a small box. After that, it's the strength of our favorite and least favorite board game names. By the light of the full moon, we're reviewing the Spiel-nominated Nova Luna, a time track tile-laying game reimplemented by the brilliant Uwe Rosenberg. | 47. Mariposas & Variable Scoring | 21 Sep 2020 | 00:46:02
Every spring, the danaus plexippus butterfly, also known as the monarch, migrates north to lay the next generation on milkweed plants. It does this until it makes its way as far from Mexico to Canada. Then a 'super-generation' that lives as long as eight months makes its way back to Mexico to overwinter in oyamel fir trees which create a bubble of temperate air for them to live in. Who says board games can't teach you something? Today on Two Wood for a Wheat, we review Elizabeth Hargrave’s big box follow-up to Wingspan. It’s Mariposas, a colorful nature-themed game about the northern migration of monarch butterflies. We also discuss the happy variety and rude surprises provided by variable scoring. "Welcome, dear listeners, to another riveting episode of Two Wood for a Wheat! Today, we delve into the mysterious realms of the new game sensation, Legacy of Yu, where strategy meets sorcery and dice rolls hold the fate of empires. Join us as we bravely navigate the treacherous waters of punishing board game mechanics, where victory is hard-won and defeat leaves you craving redemption. Grab your dice, sharpen your wits, and prepare for a wild ride through the lands of chance and strategy!" At least that's what ChatGPT thought I should say when I got lazy and wanted it to write a summary for me. But the robots have not done their research. Legacy of Yu is actually a solo deck building legacy game brought to you by Shem Phillips and illustrated by his brother Sam Phillips. One of us thinks it's one of the best solo games of the year while the other thinks something... else. | 42. Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion and Underused Mechanisms | 13 Jul 2020 | 01:16:06
I remember my first love. She was always the life of the party, constantly kept me guessing, and had more tuck boxes than you could shake a stick at. Today we return to Gloomhaven with Jaws of the Lion. It's the same beast in a smaller box. We take a very deep look at what makes this game stand out and whether it holds up to its very significant weight. How does it land with players new to Gloomhaven? Will it inspire the same love in veteran players of the big box? We also discuss board game mechanisms that are criminally underused. Mechanisms that deliver such wonderful tensions that you have to wonder why we don't see more of them. Seriously if I don't see a closed economy auction in one more boardgame then somebody's going to jail. On another note, we are considering renaming our podcast to something that better fits our analytical and critical banter.
