The key to making change stick and realizing the benefits of the change you’re trying to make is getting people committed AND having them continue working in the new way. This means you need all the people in your organization - those who do the work of your organization everyday – to be on board. The people who are going to be able to make this happen for you are your managers – the people who lead your teams everyday – the supervisors, lead hands, managers, directors. They are the ones who likely didn’t chose the change – that is often done from the top – yet they are the ones who lead and influence the majority of your people. When I get asked to provide change management support on a project, my first question is always ‘what do you mean by change management?’. My definition of change management is driven by the need for an organization to realize its desired outcomes from a change. To do this you need solid project management – to prepare, implement, and evaluate the change AND you need transition plans to support people through the ending, exploring, and new beginning stages of transition. Together, these plans make up your change management plan.

Can you be a good change leader if you don't want to change? A deep question to cover in two minutes but I give it a go - with a real-life example and actions you can take - here's a hint, they involve conversations! 

Just like on a flight where they instruct you to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others (in the unlikely event that oxygen masks are needed), you need to start with some self-reflection, and perhaps some personal changes, before you can successfully lead others through change.
