| 243: Your Firm Is an Institution | 01 oct. 2026 | 01:17:27 | |
Espy Harper, David Spehar, and Anthony Hauck join the podcast to talk about data-driven design for healthcare, where a missed clearance or a misplaced outlet stays built into a hospital for decades. We explore why firms treat every project like their first, how as much as 90% of room requirements can be templated and reused, and how a live link between a room-data database and a 3D planning tool lets one equipment change ripple through every affected room. We also get into bringing nurses and department heads into early design, and who should own the data once the building opens. This episode is especially relevant for healthcare planners, design technology leaders, and firm principals who know their best knowledge lives in a few senior people's heads, and are wondering what it would take to turn it into something the whole firm can use. By connecting owners, architects, engineers, and contractors around a shared source of truth, dRofus improves collaboration, reduces costly redesigns, and ensures projects remain aligned with operational and capital planning goals. Learn more at dRofus. Hypar Hypar is 3D space planning software for complex buildings, built for early design. Drop in your program and CAD, then drag rooms into place with walls already sized. Hypar is intuitive enough that clients can help shape the rooms in your design meetings. It checks areas and equipment clearances as you go. Hold several options in one model and change one on the spot. When a client spots a need pre-design missed, fix the requirement and design together in the same meeting. Revit takes over for construction documents. Learn more at https://hypar.io/ ----- Sign up to become a TRXL member.

| 242: Designing for 100 Years⊠in 100 Seconds? | 24 sept. 2026 | 02:26:39 | |
I asked the same partners you heard last episode two questions back to back. When a vendor says AI, do they mean autocomplete, a copilot, or something that acts on its own, and does the distinction matter to you? And further out, can you describe a building in plain English and get something real back? Oliver Goldman at Autodesk isn't sure the three terms mean much beyond branding, and explains why Revit's MCP server started read-only when both you and the agent hold the pen. Greg Demchak at Bentley describes an agent driving a headless MicroStation, and argues for a new interface on top of a proven geometry engine instead of a rewrite. Matt Wash at Bimbeats shows an agent flagging a model with 50 hours of work from one person and no second reviewer, while Ariel Cooke-Zamora explains why his crash-report agent ended up as a Python script. Marty Rozmanith at Skema says the AI writes deterministic scripts and then runs them, and calls Revit a data entry tool. Scott Reynolds at UpCodes says stacking agents in a line is a software architecture mistake. Jesper Wallgren at Finch gave this episode its title. Mike Soldan (Egnyte), Prasanta Bose and Michael Jansen (TwinMaster), Roderick Bates (Chaos), Holger Kreienbrink (Graphisoft), Gavin Nicholls, Campbell Yule, and Theodoros Galanos (Aurecon) weigh in on where the prompt-to-building idea holds up and where it breaks. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders and design technologists who are being sold "agentic" this quarter and need a way to tell what ships today from what is still a demo, and for anyone wondering how far a prompt gets you toward a building. | 241: From Autocomplete to Agent: Where AEC Actually Is | 17 sept. 2026 | 02:20:32
Every company in this arc has AI in their marketing. So I asked all of them the same question: in a real firm today, what can it actually do, and what can't it? Michael Jansen and Prasanta Bose at TwinMaster open with why firms resist adopting new tools at all, and Roderick Bates at Chaos separates real capability from social-media hype using a story about his son and a magnet-fishing YouTube video. Holger Kreienbrink at Graphisoft wants AI on the tedious tasks, not the creative ones. Marty Rozmanith at Skema says 90 to 95 percent of what they do is deterministic math, not AI at all. Ariel Cooke-Zamora and Matt Wash at BIMbeats can actually measure adoption inside a firm instead of guessing at it. And Oliver Goldman at Autodesk admits he isn't sure autocomplete, copilot, and agent mean anything different beyond marketing, before Greg Demchak at Bentley and Theodoros Galanos at Aurecon lay out what a harness actually is and why it might be 90 percent of the real work. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders and technology decision-makers who are tired of vendor claims that expire the moment they're spoken, and who want a straight answer to what these tools do in a real firm this week, not the demo. | 240: I've Got to Get My Project Out on Friday | 03 sept. 2026 | 01:59:06
Two questions close out the BIM 2.0 arc. When a tool generates a design for you, where does its output stop and your judgment start? And what does interoperability actually deliver once you strip away the vendor promises? Roderick Bates at Chaos draws the clearest line anybody in this series draws about what a generative tool should not be allowed to do â his team wonât let AI touch geometry or materials without the designerâs direct input, because thatâs âthe bridge too far.â Campbell Yule pushes back on the whole premise of AI-assisted design: a model that satisfies every constraint is a starting point, not architecture. Jesper Wallgren at Finch says the architectâs role is shifting from craftsman to curator, and that quality â not quantity â becomes the competitive edge once AI can produce endless options. Gavin Nicholls walks through the build-versus-buy calculus at his firm and lands on an analogy that sticks: even Excel is lock-in, we just donât think about it that way. Then the episode turns to interoperability, and Dimitrie Stefanescu at Speckle gives me the line Iâd put on the poster for this whole arc: letâs liberate our data. He and Marty Rozmanith at Skema both argue the old goal â perfect file translation between platforms â was never the real point. Carl Christensen at Autodesk has to answer for what actually survives the trip between Forma and Revit, and Holger Kreienbrink at Graphisoft previews an open collaboration platform meant to make that handoff invisible. Randall Stevens closes the loop on where AI-generated imagery is heading, and Clifton Harness at TestFit makes the case for a constellation of people over any single tool. Three episodes, and the people in them agreed on almost nothing except that the tools are changing faster than the contracts are. This one is for anyone who has ever had to ship a project on a deadline that didnât move while the tools underneath them did. | 239: You're Not Going Home Early | 27 août 2026 | 03:07:37
Episode one ended with the pitch: new tools give architects their day back. Episode two asks the harder question. If a firm stops running one platform and starts running ten, what happens to twenty years of muscle memory while that shakes out? I put some version of that question to nine voices building and using the BIM 2.0 stack. Gavin Nicholls calls the sunk cost a serious blocker and describes his own Revit add-in work as "polishing the prison bars from the other side." Carl Christensen at Autodesk has to answer for why the company that built the industry's center of gravity is choosing to hold customers' hands through the transition instead of moving faster. Matt Wash and Ariel Cooke-Zamora at Bimbeats bring real adoption data â a firm's AutoCAD-to-Civil 3D migration climbed from thirty to seventy percent, then flatlined, and the people who were going to switch already have. Campbell Yule lays out the Catch-22 underneath the whole BIM 2.0 pitch: a new tool only earns the years of trust Revit already has by getting used inside Revit first, not by replacing it. Clifton Harness at TestFit calls Revit "a masterpiece" and then argues that's exactly the problem â it's a parametric propagation engine, not a design tool, and adoption "costs everything" because firms almost never budget for retraining. And Randall Stevens, Jesper Wallgren, Holger Kreienbrink, Marty Rozmanith and Dimitrie Stefanescu all answer from inside the products they're building, sometimes conceding more than a pitch deck would allow. This one is for BIM managers, firm leaders and anyone who has to defend a software line item â the people who feel the switching cost in their calendar, not just their budget. | 238: Half Your Day Isn't Design | 20 août 2026 | 01:38:07
The first episode of The Next AEC Tech Stack opens on the number nobody wants to say out loud. Randall Stevens of AVAIL puts the mundane overhead of an architect's day at somewhere near fifty percent, and he admits it's hard to measure because it disappears in seconds and minutes at a time. Looking for a file. Marking up the same PDF three people already marked up. Waiting on a license. Across this episode I put one question to ten people building and using the BIM 2.0 tools: does this let architects design, or does it move the technology tax to a different line item? Matt Wash and Ariel Cooke-Zamora bring project data showing where a documentation crunch actually went. Campbell Yule argues the real progress is much narrower than the marketing suggests. Jesper Wallgren, Holger Kreienbrink, Marty Rozmanith, Dimitrie Stefanescu and Clifton Harness answer from inside the products, sometimes conceding more than you'd expect, and Gavin Nicholls prices out what adoption actually costs a firm with a fixed tech budget. It closes with everyone answering the same three questions about the firm of 2030. This one is for practitioners, BIM managers and firm leaders who have watched a new tool arrive and quietly add work. | 237: 'The Interns Will Have Interns', with Phil Read | 14 août 2026 | 01:27:10
Phil Read joins the podcast to talk about where human judgment belongs in an AI-assisted design process. We explore his case for the infamous sawtooth diagram (the thing BIM was supposed to eliminate) as the place where experience gets injected. We get into AI as an intern rather than an oracle, why firms are using it to study materials and lighting instead of generating building form, and why automated documentation is fast but not yet predictable. We close on AEC Acoustics, the 50-person event Phil runs in North Florida, and why it's built the way it is. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders, technology directors, and educators watching entry-level work get absorbed by software. If the reps were how people used to build judgment, the open question is what replaces them, and Phil makes the case that the answer is teaching delegation far earlier than anyone teaches it now. | 236: 'No One Can Own the Law', with Garrett Reynolds | 11 août 2026 | 01:22:19
Garrett Reynolds joins the podcast to talk about UpCodes' decade-long fight to keep building codes free and public. We explore the string of lawsuits UpCodes has faced from the International Code Council, ASTM, and other code publishers since 2017, the Supreme Court and circuit court rulings that established no one can own the law, and the Pro Codes Act, the industry-backed legislation now trying to accomplish in Congress what the publishers couldn't win in court. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders and practitioners who rely on adopted codes every day and have never thought much about who controls access to them. Garrett lays out what's actually at stake for firms and their tech stacks if the publishers win, and what a small amount of constituent pressure can do against a well-funded lobbying effort. | 235: 'How Olson Kundig Scaled AI Adoption Across a 300-Person Firm', with Marlene Chen and Blair Payson | 28 juil. 2026 | 01:19:13
Marlene Chen and Blair Payson join the podcast to talk about how a firm known for design, not technology, actually puts new tools to work. We explore the office-wide crit they ran to surface friction points across every role and experience level, the shift that took their visualization team from three people to effectively 150, and the messy reality of adoption: rogue folders on personal desktops, a surprise surge in software licenses, and the slow work of change management inside a 300-person practice. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders, design technologists, and anyone responsible for getting a growing practice to adopt new tools without flattening its culture. If you've ever wondered how a studio this size balances experimentation against deadlines, and why the people always matter more than the technology, this one will give you plenty to sit with. | 234: 'Here's to the Crazy Ones, AEC Edition', with HÄvard Vasshaug | 14 juil. 2026 | 01:38:58
HÄvard Vasshaug joins the podcast to talk about what happens to building data after the architect hits save, and why so much of it dies inside the authoring tool. We explore why it makes no sense to force construction, cost, and scheduling data into Revit, how live model changes can flow straight to contractors and owners without a BIM license, and why six-week-old information is the reason projects run over time and over budget. HÄvard also gets into architects' instinct to guard their files, the industry's decades-long habit of shedding risk instead of getting paid to carry it, and why the firms that self-disrupt end up looking light years ahead. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders, BIM managers, and design technologists who are tired of being the bottleneck stuffing metadata into models on someone else's behalf, and who suspect that structured, liberated data is the real groundwork for everything AI is about to ask of the profession. | 233: 'Spaces For People To Kiss', with Mariusz Hermansdorfer | 01 juil. 2026 | 01:32:55
Mariusz Hermansdorfer joins the podcast to talk about turning an internal tool into a product for the whole profession. We explore how he spun Jifto out of Henning Larsen as the firm's first ever tech spin-off, why letting go of corporate control was the thing that made it possible, and how a Rhino plugin can put wind, stormwater, and microclimate analysis in the hands of architects who never had a specialist team to call. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders and computational designers who are sitting on tools they've built in-house and wondering whether they could, or should, take them to market. If you've ever felt the gap between how designers think and how engineers deliver, or wondered what it really takes to spin a product out of a practice, this one's for you. | 232: 'Bringing Joy Back to Architecture', with Tatjana Dzambazova | 16 juin 2026 | 02:00:32
Tatjana Dzambazova joins the podcast to talk about why the AEC industry deserves a brand new tool, one built for AI from the ground up instead of bolted onto software designed 25 years ago. We explore the end of what she calls the terror of technological expertise, the difference between hoarding artifacts and capturing the process behind a building, and why she believes AI could bring joy back to architecture rather than grinding it down to cost and speed. This episode is especially relevant for architects and firm leaders who feel the pull between efficiency and meaning, and who are wrestling with what their value will be in a world where anyone can generate a rendering. Tanja makes the case that if architects don't define what they'll be paid for in the future, owners will define it for them, and she offers a far more hopeful read of this moment than most. | 231: 'Architects: Reclaim Control in CA', with Jack Sadler | 09 juin 2026 | 01:07:54
In this special partner episode, Jack Sadler joins the podcast to talk about the phase of a project where architects quietly lose control: construction administration. We explore why CA became a cost center instead of a profit center, what happens when architects run their work out of someone else's software, and how AI can automate the routing, logging, and paperwork without ever touching the professional judgment that actually matters. Jack makes the case that CA is where design intent gets realized or negotiated away, and that owning the flow of information is how you make sure it's the former. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders, project architects, and anyone who's been handed the CA phase and felt it turn into email triage, spreadsheet chasing, and cover-your-ass paperwork. If you've ever suspected there's a better way to run construction administration, one that makes your firm smarter, more defensible, and maybe even profitable, this conversation will give you a concrete place to start: take back control of what you're already accountable for. | 230: 'Rooms for Storytelling', with Keith Gerchak | 19 mai 2026 | 01:23:09
Keith Gerchak joins the podcast to talk about the double life he's been living for thirty years: designing spaces for storytelling as the Design Principal at TheatreDNA, and inhabiting those spaces as an actor and filmmaker. We explore what makes performing arts buildings unlike any other building type, the surprising parallels between directing a feature film and managing an architecture project, and how technology â from Revit to AI â can either serve a story or quietly strip it of meaning. This episode is especially relevant for architects and design technologists who feel the tension between the tools they use every day and the purpose those tools are meant to serve. Keith makes the case quietly and specifically â drawing from three decades of bespoke theater design and a twelve-year independent film that made it into 500 theaters nationwide â that knowing why a building exists, and for whom, is the one thing no technology gets to replace. | 229: Campfire Series - 'The CGarchitect Story', with Jeff Mottle | 06 mai 2026 | 01:23:47
In this special Campfire Series episode, Jeff Mottle joins the podcast to tell us the full story of CGarchitect â from a side project launched in 2001 to a 21-year platform, a sale to Chaos Group, and everything in between: the 3D Awards, CGschool, the evolution of archviz from expert-only technical gatekeeping to storytelling, and what COVID revealed when it stripped away all the travel and in-person events that had been keeping him going. We also get into his four years at NVIDIA, the AI wave he'd been predicting for nearly a decade before it hit, and why the AEC industry's instinct to wait for a clear winner may be the costliest mistake it makes. This episode is especially relevant for visualization professionals, design technologists, and firm leaders watching AI reshape the tools they've built careers around. Jeff makes a direct case that the democratization of archviz didn't start with AI â the last 5% just got sped up â and he's specific about why billing by the hour is the industry's biggest liability going forward and what a shift to outcome-based pricing actually looks like. | 228: 'What Did You Actually Do Today', with Steve Burrows CBE | 28 avr. 2026 | 01:24:23
Steve Burrows CBE joins the podcast to talk about why the construction industry keeps rewarding dysfunction instead of fixing it. We explore the gap between selling time and creating value, why startups keep failing to change construction by trying to change all of it at once, and what the collapse of Katerra actually taught the people who were in the room when it happened. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders and engineers who feel trapped in the cycle of meetings, emails, and change orders, and who suspect the system they're operating in was never designed to produce great work. Steve makes a blunt, practical case for starting with what you can control, and his perspective is shaped by decades of working on some of the most complex structures in the world before walking away from the corporate path to figure out what comes next. | 227: 'Are We Horses or Are We Coal', with Rachel Riopel | 14 avr. 2026 | 01:36:40
Rachel Riopel joins the podcast to talk about why enterprise transformation keeps failing in AEC and what it actually takes to make it stick. We explore the gap between running pilots and operationalizing technology across an organization, why the industry's obsession with productivity as the primary metric is a race to the bottom, and how cybersecurity is quietly becoming one of the biggest friction points in AEC collaboration. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders, digital practice directors, and technology strategists who are tired of watching transformation initiatives stall out after the initial push. If you're wrestling with how to move technology from a siloed initiative to something embedded in your firm's business strategy, or if you're trying to figure out what to actually measure beyond speed, Rachel's framework for organizational readiness will give you a sharper lens for the work ahead. | 226: 'Think Slower to Move Faster', with Charles Portelli | 07 avr. 2026 | 01:49:58
Charles Portelli joins the podcast to talk about what you learn when you leave architecture to build software, and what you bring back when you return. We explore the gap between how buildings are designed and how they're actually fabricated, why the most valuable work inside a large firm is often the least glamorous, and what it would take to build an AI-powered project assistant that actually knows everything about a job. This episode is especially relevant for design technology leaders, firm principals, and anyone working on the internal tooling side of architecture. If you've felt the tension between chasing the next new capability and keeping everyone from drowning in an ever-growing tool stack, Charlie names that problem clearly and talks about what a more patient, intentional path forward looks like. | 225: 'A Nuclear Bomb Moment', with Antonio GonzĂĄlez Viegas | 31 mars 2026 | 01:17:16
Antonio GonzĂĄlez Viegas joins the podcast to talk about the open source infrastructure layer he's building for BIM software and why the barriers that have protected legacy vendors for decades are collapsing faster than most people realize. We explore why every BIM company has been forced to reinvent the same foundational technology from scratch, how That Open Company is giving those pieces away under an MIT license, and what happens when AI compresses years of development into weeks. Antonio coined the phrase "nuclear bomb moment" to describe where BIM software development stands right now, and the conversation pushes hard on whether that framing holds up. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders, BIM managers, and design technologists watching the AEC software market shift beneath them. If you're weighing vendor lock-in against emerging alternatives, or wondering whether small teams with AI can actually compete with established platforms, this conversation will sharpen your thinking. | 224: 'Everything Is Going to Change', with Martyn Day | 24 mars 2026 | 03:18:35
Martyn Day joins the podcast to talk about the forces quietly dismantling how architecture and engineering work gets done, and how it gets charged for. We explore how AI-driven solvers are compressing months of project coordination into hours, why BIM 1.0 is becoming a drawing conduit as open SDKs erode software moats, and what layered cloud and AI token costs mean for firms reconsidering where their project data lives. This episode is especially relevant for firm leaders and technology directors who are watching these tools arrive without a clear view of what they mean for staffing, billing, and competitive position. Martyn moves past tool-by-tool analysis to the structural question underneath: if the business model depends on billable hours, what happens when the hours disappear? | 223: 'They Better Find Something Else to Do', with Pablo Zamorano Mosniam | 18 mars 2026 | 01:19:24
Pablo Zamorano Mosniam joins the podcast to talk about what it looks like to build a technology practice around design values rather than the other way around. We explore the âdoor scale,â the intimate layer of texture and touchable detail that most firms skip and Heatherwick obsesses over, why tools leave recognizable fingerprints on the buildings they produce, and how the studio's most-used internal AI tool turned out to be the one that required the least training to adopt. This episode is especially relevant for computational designers, design technologists, and firm leaders watching the industry accelerate toward faster, cheaper, and blander â and wondering whether the right response is better tools, clearer values, or both. Pablo doesn't soften his view: the people waiting on the sidelines won't find a comfortable place to land. | 222: 'You're Automating the Wrong Thing', with Mirco Bianchini | 10 mars 2026 | 01:12:47
Mirco Bianchini joins the podcast to talk about where AI automation is actually headed in AEC and why the industry is likely focused on the wrong problems. We explore the gap between Grasshopper prototyping and real product deployment, why LLMs are about to democratize computation far beyond the specialist niche, and how MCPs could finally connect a construction industry that has always been fragmented by tool silos. This episode is especially relevant for BIM managers, computational designers, and design technologists who are experimenting with AI tools but unsure how to move from individual automation to something the whole firm can use. Mirco argues the real opportunity isn't in generating models but actually in the unglamorous operational work: capturing knowledge across projects, reducing email overhead, and building the organizational second brain that firms have always needed. | 213: âThe Rise of Tech-Driven Leadership in AECâ, with Jonathan Nelson, Nirva Fereshetian, Heath May, and Shane Burger | 25 nov. 2025 | 00:56:40
Jonathan Nelson, Nirva Fereshetian, Heath May, and Shane Burger join the podcast to talk about one of the biggest questions facing our industry: How do design technologists grow into firmwide leaders? What was originally planned as a one-way presentation quickly became a true two-way conversation. Instead of a traditional panel format, we created a space where the audience guided the discussion with thoughtful and challenging questions. The energy in the room elevated the entire session and resulted in one of the most engaging and candid moments of the conference. Joining me on stage are four leaders who all began in design technology roles and now hold significant positions inside their firms:
Together, we explore real pathways into leadership, pivotal career decisions, and how to build credibility inside complex organizations. We discuss what technology adoption conversations look like, how to develop the next generation of talent, how to approach the build versus buy dilemma, and what it takes to secure buy-in for major technology investments. We also talk openly about the cultural friction that continues to challenge firmwide transformation. By capturing and sharing this session on TRXL, we help extend the value and reach of AECtech far beyond the room. These ideas and insights can now be part of a global conversation among AEC professionals and leaders. If you want to understand how design technologists make the jump into senior leadership, what skills matter most, and how the future of practice is being shaped right now, this episode delivers clarity, candor, and inspiration from leaders who have lived it. | 212: âCuriosity as a KPIâ, with Ashley Hastings | 11 nov. 2025 | 01:50:11
Ashley Hastings joins the podcast to talk about what it really means to make curiosity a key performance indicator (KPI). đ A note from Evan: The phrase âcuriosity as a KPIâ contains its own contradiction, and hopefully the irony landed with you, dear listener. Obviously, KPIs are about measurement, control, and predictabilityâthe very things that can kill curiosity when applied too rigidly. True curiosity thrives in open-ended exploration, not quarterly targets. The challenge isn't to meter curiosity like a production metric, but to design systems that protect space for it, reward it when it leads somewhere useful, and to not punish the curious if/when it doesn't. The goal is to make curiosity visible and valued. Not to turn wonder into a dashboard. We discuss how curiosity can and should be operationalized as a measurable part of firm cultureânot so much as something tracked, but rewarded and tied to real outcomes instead of being left to chance. Ashley shares her perspective on aligning incentives for innovation, treating training like a product, and creating feedback loops that actually capture and scale knowledge across teams. We also talk about the post-GPT reality of context over keywords, and how design technology leadership is increasingly about change management and culture design. If youâre a digital practice leader, BIM manager, or anyone trying to build a more innovative, adaptive practice, this conversation offers a clear path toward turning curiosity into a strategic advantage. Robert Otani and Alexandra Pollock join the podcast to talk about how theyâre rethinking Thornton Tomasettiâs engineering practice by making technology the foundation rather than an add-on.
