Greek Island Hopping: Hidden Gems, Insider Tips & How to Do It Like a Local17 Jun 202500:46:51

Paula and co-host Rachel Beausang sit down with Petros — a Melbourne-born Greek who moved to Athens and never looked back. Now running Blue and White Dream Tours, Petros has spent decades discovering what most tourists miss: the family taverna down the side street, the island the locals actually love, and why August is the worst time most people choose to visit. This one is packed with practical gold.

In this episode

  • Why most island-hopping itineraries fail — and the transfer mistake almost everyone makes
  • Seven days, two islands plus Athens: the formula Petros swears by
  • How to find where locals actually eat: follow the pensioner, never the laminated menu
  • Santorini is worth doing once — but go early morning or you'll be in a human traffic jam
  • Why Naxos is Petros's personal favourite and the island he keeps going back to
  • Milos for beaches, Syros for getting genuinely lost, Crete for eating with the bus drivers
  • Skip August. Seriously. End of May, early June or September is the move
  • Theatre on the Move: Petros's new concept bringing actors in togas onto Athens tour buses
  • What to actually expect from Greek hotels — and why big lifts are not part of the deal

Everest Base Camp: Why This Bucket List Trek Is More Doable Than You Think10 Jun 202500:33:57

Most people hear 'Everest' and immediately rule it out. Troy Barnes is here to change your mind. A seasoned mountaineer on a mission to conquer the Seven Summits, Troy sat down with Paula to share what it's really like to trek to Everest Base Camp — from the world's most nerve-wracking airport landing to yaks delivering groceries at 5,000 metres, and why people in their late 60s with average fitness made it to the top.

In this episode

  • Why Everest Base Camp is a trek, not a climb — and what that actually means for your body
  • Troy's group included people aged 69 with average fitness. Two didn't finish, but 13 out of 15 did
  • Lukla airport: tagged the world's most dangerous, one runway, and a wall at the end of it
  • What you eat along the way (simple, nourishing, and surprisingly fine if you're not fussy)
  • Tea houses vs tents — and why Troy was very pleasantly surprised
  • The moment 40 yaks came charging across a rope bridge 100 metres above a river
  • Altitude sickness: what to watch for, when to take tablets, and why you shouldn't skip the safety checks
  • The highest-altitude Irish pub in the world at Namche Bazaar. Of course Troy found it.
  • Why April and October are the best months to go

 Practical info

  • Getting there: direct flight Singapore to Kathmandu (~4.5hrs), then a small plane to Lukla
  • Duration: approximately 14 days total including acclimatisation days
  • Best time: April or October — moderate temps, stable weather
  • Do you need a guide? Yes — they handle permits, tea house bookings and daily health monitoring
  • Altitude tablets: optional but recommended to have just in case
  • Packing tip: don't over-pack. You carry your own bag. Troy had energy bars until day 7 and never needed them

Sicily Road Trip: Solo, One Month, No Map (And I Survived)10 Jun 202500:34:54

Welcome to the very first episode of Truly Expat Travel! Paula kicks things off with a solo month in Sicily — house hunting, road tripping and eating her weight in arancini. From the Sunday markets of Palermo to the medieval streets of Salemi, this is a love letter to slow travel done the Sicilian way.

In this episode

  • Why Paula drove herself solo across the entire island — and cried twice (only twice!)
  • The Sunday street food markets in Palermo that turned into a spontaneous dance party
  • Why she fell hard for the medieval town of Salemi and started dreaming about buying property there
  • The driving reality check: GPS lies, big cars don't fit, and Sicilians drive like they're auditioning for Fast & Furious
  • Where to eat: arancini, cannoli made from a nun's original recipe, Hugo Spritz and the best gelato of her life
  • Best time to visit, which towns to base yourself in, and what to skip

 Must-try food & drink

  • Arancini — Paula's near-daily habit and non-negotiable
  • Cannoli from the Palermo convent bakery using the original nun's recipe
  • Hugo Spritz — elderflower and Prosecco, her go-to across all of Italy
  • Pistachio gelato & the local pasta — don't skip either

Paula's top tips

  • Go in May or September — warm, less crowded, beaches still swimmable
  • Get a small car. Seriously. A small car.
  • Don't trust GPS in the old towns — it will take you somewhere you cannot escape
  • Book accommodation with a car park confirmed in writing, not just 'parking nearby
  • Stand at the bar for your morning espresso. It's cheaper and it's the local way
  • No cappuccino after 11am — the Italians will judge you (lovingly, but still)
  • Watch The Leopard on Netflix before you go — filmed in Palermo, sets the scene perfectly

  • Permits cost $800 (high season) or $700 (low season)
  • Minimum age: 15 years
  • Do not visit if you have flu, cold, or cough — gorilla DNA is close to ours

  • Fitness level: comfortable walking 3km on uneven, hilly terrain

Chimpanzee Tracking Tips:

  • Morning or afternoon sessions available
  • Duration: 2–3 hours
  • More active, energetic experience than gorilla trekking

Drone Warning: Always declare drones before entering Uganda. Clearance is required — and it's strictly enforced, especially in national parks.

The Tulip Season Secret Most Visitors Get Wrong — with Gerrit from Hidden Holland07 Apr 202600:17:12

Most people planning a trip to Holland for tulip season get the timing wrong. They book Keukenhof, they show up, and they either miss the peak bloom entirely or find themselves shoulder to shoulder with thousands of other tourists wondering why it doesn't look like the photos. Sound familiar?

This week I'm joined by Gerrit from Hidden Holland — a specialist in Dutch travel and someone who knows the tulip fields better than almost anyone — and he's sharing exactly what most visitors get wrong, when you should actually be going, and where to find the real tulip experience beyond the tourist trail.

This is a special 4-part series where I'm featuring travel creators sharing their best tips, hacks and local knowledge from four completely different corners of the world. Each episode, one creator, one destination, one set of tips that could genuinely change how you travel. This week — it's all about Holland in spring.

If you're planning a trip to the Netherlands this year, listen to this before you book anything.

What We Cover in This Episode

  • 🌷 When tulip season actually peaks in Holland — and why most visitors get the timing completely wrong
  • 📍 Where the tulip fields really are beyond Keukenhof — and why locals go somewhere different entirely
  • 📸 The best spots for photos that aren't overrun with tour groups
  • 🗓️ How to plan your Netherlands spring trip around the bloom — including what happens if you get the dates wrong
  • 🚲 How to explore the fields like a local rather than a tourist
  • 💡 Gerrit's single best tip for first-time visitors to Holland in spring

About This Week's Guest

Gerrit is the founder of Hidden Holland — a travel platform dedicated to showing visitors the real Netherlands beyond the obvious tourist stops. He joined me on a previous episode to talk about Amsterdam, and this week he's back with everything you need to know about tulip season.
