TD198: What Really Happened To Yellow, Inc?23 déc. 202400:53:51

In today's episode, we discuss what happened to my former employer, Yellow, Inc. Why did they go out of business after almost 100 years? Was it the Teamsters fault like the CEO of Yellow said? Or was it Yellow's fault like the President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said.

Spoiler alert: I don't have any special inside knowledge, but I do have opinions based on working for both the company as a driver and the Teamsters as an Alternate Union Steward.

TD197: Video Reviews: Garmin dēzl™ Headset 200 & Garmin dēzl™OTR81028 sept. 202400:15:11

So it’s been over a year since the last episode aired, so obviously I start out with a groveling apology, followed by a brief explanation of what happened. I also lay out a plan to wrap up the Trucker Dump Podcast once and for all.

But for now, here are the links to those long overdue Garmin video reviews I’ve been talking about. And I also throw in a link to my older review of the Garmin dēzl™ OTR1000, which goes into all the details of setting up your Garmin GPS.

TD196: Teamster Battles Continue, EPA Vs. Truckers, Truck Stop News, Female Trucker Survey, Lots Of Truck Safety Topics, & More06 mai 202302:02:53

In today’s long-overdue show, we’ve got stories on Teamster fights with Sysco and Yellow, FedEx is heading into a massive reorganization, lots of truck stop news, what’s going on with truck safety; including crash rates for new carriers, new out-of-service criteria, driver-facing cameras, drug testing, E-log violation detection, automatic emergency braking legislation pending, and the safest state for truckers (this one might surprise you). We’ll also talk about trucking’s ongoing battle against environmental standards, how female truckers feel about their job, and much more.

In the listener feedback segment, you weigh in on tire recycling, checking your brake lights, and we’ll have some follow-up on whether day cab drivers can utilize the split sleeper berth rule without having a sleeper berth.

TD195: ELD Failures, Teamsters Get Busy, Cheat Sheet For Safety Blitz, Tax Breaks For Truckers, AB5 Challenged Again, Agriculture Exemption Under Fire, Can Day Cabs Use Split Sleeper?, & More01 avr. 202301:32:02

In today’s show, we’ve got a cheat sheet to prepare for the upcoming largest safety blitz in North America, the Agriculture Hours-of-Service exemption is coming under fire, California’s AB5 law is back in the headlines, we’ll try to figure out if Electronic Logging Devices have improved safety as much as the FMCSA hoped, the Teamsters are having battles on many fronts, we’ll learn about possible new tax breaks for truckers, and we’ll discuss how the new under-21 driver program is coming. All that and more news.

In the listener feedback segment, I’ll give you an update on my quest to find out if day cab drivers can legally extend their 14-hour day by using the 14-hour pause aspect of the split sleeper berth rule. Then a listener will explain the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse loophole that baffled me recently. We’ll have more on the AB5 thing and what defines an independent contractor. We’ve got another “law of trucking” submission and we hear from a new listener. So sit back, take your shoes off, put your feet up on the dash, and turn it up. Unless of course, you’re driving right now.

TD194: Knight-Swift Buys U.S. Xpress, Daylight Savings Time Challenged, Truckers Given Stoplight Priority, Bad Choice For Secretary Of Labor, What To Do With Old Tires, Possibly The World's Tiniest Trucker, & More25 mars 202301:27:32

In this week’s news, Knight-Swift buys yet another large carrier, daylight savings time is being debated in Congress for the millionth time, a Congressman calls the Secretary of Labor nominee the “worst choice.” We’ll find out why. We’ll discuss a new technology that could possibly give truckers priority at stop lights, a safety coalition calls for big safety changes, we’ll discuss what happens to a tire when it finally dies, I’ll tell you about lots of new truck stops opening (better get your shot glass out), what possibly might be the world’s tiniest trucker, and it appears that the public want more truck parking (just not anywhere near their house). All that and more news.

Plus in the listener feedback segment, you weigh in on truckers wanting praise above all else, we’ll learn more about how these “best fleets” lists work (I knew there was something fishy going on there), and one listener wants to talk about a few things; how stupid parking on a shoulder is, his tolerance level for breakdowns, and of course, he takes a shot at me for making a bad guess as what CBP stands for. And we’ll follow that up with a bummer-of-a-story to end on a rare sad note. But it’s something that needs to be said, so please stay tuned.

So without further ado, let’s get this thing rolling.

In today’s episode, we’ve got a possible new Secretary of Labor, a fight between a Senator and the Teamster’s President, rising pay for diesel mechanics, the Love’s Travel Stop’s founder dies, I’ll tell you about one high tech and one low tech product, Cummins is rebranding it’s emissions-focused division, and apparently, truckers value praise more than anything else. Huh? All that and more.

We’ve also got followup in the listener feedback segment concerning hourly trucker pay and how Canada is spending their money to attract new truckers.

So in the immortal words of Lynyrd Skynyrd; turn it up.

TD192: Roadcheck Safety Blitz Dates Announced, Canada Gets Funding For New Truckers, FMCSA Gets More Exemption Requests, Big Truck Crash Study Coming, & More04 mars 202301:03:34

In today’s show, I’ll tell you when the biggest safety blitz of the year will take place, Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) asks the FMCSA for a better Big Truck Crash Study this time around, more rules exemptions are being sought from the FMCSA, new “move over” laws are coming in some states, Canada provides funding to get more truckers into the industry, a new loading/unloading system is introduced by a major LTL company, and a truck pulls a semi out of a ditch. Spoiler: it’s not a tow truck.

Then for the fun part where we’ve got a Trucker Grub segment from @Wunuvakind, @TruckerSmack has a suggestion how the FMCSA could make the split sleeper berth rule easier for everyone, and once again, my ability to speak coherently is challenged, only this time it’s by @Goose from Australia.

TD191: State Of The Union & Trucking, EV Rollout Not Going As Planned, FMCSA Stays Busy With Exemptions, TA's New Restaurant, & More25 févr. 202301:06:14

In today’s show, we’ll talk about how the trucking industry was a hot topic at the State of the Union address, we’ll talk about how this futuristic trucking world isn’t working out quite as expected, the FMCSA is staying busy receiving and rejecting exemption requests, I’ll tell you about a new restaurant chain at TA truck stops, and I’ll point you to a funny article written in a style you used to get here.

In the listener feedback segment, we’ll talk weigh station apps, worn out tires, how “best trucking fleet” criteria works, and I’ll point you to another trucking podcast I listened to recently that was recommended by a listener. And after much guilt-driven goading, I finally talk a listener into submitting a Trucker Grub segment. Well… sort of. Stay tuned.

TD190: BP Buys TA, New State Traffic Laws, Truck Stop News, Preparing For Weigh Stations, Right To Repair Trucks, What Your Tires Can Tell You, & More18 févr. 202301:31:38

In this week’s show, we’ve got lots of truck stop news, I’ll tell you the top 10 worst traffic bottlenecks in the US, we’ve got a crap ton of new state traffic laws, the FMCSA is revamping the way it rates carriers for safety, I’ll share tips to get you in and out of a weigh station quickly, and we’ll talk about what your tires are trying to tell you.

Also, there’s a new “AirBnb” for trucks (yes trucks, not truckers), there’s a new type of CB radio on the market, we’ll discuss how new Right to Repair legislation is important, and a trucker gets arrested for eating muffins. And that’s only part of the news.

In the listener feedback segment, Andrew remembers our dearly departed friend Shannon Holden, Gordon joins the Trucker Dump Slack group, Dave finally figures out what the guy says in the feedback intro, and ex truck driving instructor calls me Toddles and offers his services to the podcast.

TD189.5: No Show This Week11 févr. 202300:01:04
No show today. Really crappy week. 'Nuff said.
TD189: ATA CEO Talks To Congress, Choosing A Truck Driving School, Possible New Speed Limits, Steps To Take Before Applying, & More04 févr. 202301:19:31

Well, news was light last week, but it’s back with a vengeance, which means I’m pretty sure this week’s show is going to be long, so strap in and keep your cup of coffee handy so you don’t doze off. LOL

News this week includes American Trucking Association’s (ATA) CEO discussing trucking’s biggest issues with Congress, positive drug tests were up in 2022, lots of states making new road rules, how to make sure you have the best chance to get that next trucking job, and possibly the world’s worst trucker. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Listener feedback topics this week includes roundabouts, Canadian vaccine mandates, an and a lengthy discussion about truck driving schools. Also, it seems only right that someone would point out how bad I talk. LOL Alright, let’s get on with it.

TD188: A Trucker's Breakdown Saga, Tax Credits For Truckers, New Roundabout Rules, Bird Poop Vs. Autonomous Truck, & More29 janv. 202301:28:20

Well, the news is light this week, so we’re trying something different again. We’ve been teasing a mega breakdown saga from listener Wunuvakind in recent weeks and it turned out to be far too long for the listener feedback segment. So, I’m sure much to her surprise, Wunuvakind’s story is featured on the show. I enjoyed it immensely and I hope you do to.

As for the news, we talk about a new bill pushing tax credits for most truckers, new roundabout rules, CARB is slowing it’s electric truck expectations, and an autonomous truck gets sidelined by bird poop. All those stories, plus more.

In the listener feedback segment, Charles, Farley, and William all just want to say hi, Driver Dave is back to scolding me again, and Cici shares her favorite Trucker Dump episodes.

TD187: Worst Traffic In The World, The Legality of Trucker Marijuana, Pay-By-The-Mile Criticized, Ammonia-Powered Truck, & More21 janv. 202301:01:10

In today’s show, California’s AB5 just won’t go away; getting paid-by-the-mile is coming under fire; truckers, drugs, and drug testing is always a hot topic; and I’ll tell you where is the worst traffic in the world and the US is (the answer might surprise you).

Also, how likely is the US going to be ready for electric trucks by 2045?; I’ll tell you about the new type of eco-friendly fuel; we’ll discuss new ways to avoid low-clearance accidents; and one source says the worst of this inflation mess is behind us. All that and more news.

Plus, we’ll hear from a new listener in the feedback segment and I’ll introduce you to Cici, who you’ll be hearing from in quite a few upcoming episodes.

TD186: Teamsters Vs. UPS, California’s Massive Truck Shutdown, FMCSA Busy Rejecting Stuff, & More14 janv. 202301:11:12

Well, we’re back to our normal news-focused show this week. We’ve got lots of news to catch up on, including how California shutting down a crapload of trucks is going. Is the new Tesla semi already having problems? The FMCSA is staying super busy with both denying and accepting requests. I’ll catch you up on that.

What else? Trucking jobs are slowing down, there’s a new tax guide for owner-operators, young truckers and truck parking are both back in the limelight, I’ll tell you about the ongoing battle between UPS and the Teamsters (and why it’s important), and the Biden Administration makes a statement that won’t make most truckers very happy. All that news and more, including @wunuvakind coming back to share a great cafe in the Trucker Grub segment.

In the listener feedback segment, we've got new Trucker Dump Slack Group members, @driverchrismc questions my website building skills, and a listener needs your help finding a particular kind of trucking app.

TD185: Scoot Over And Fix It Now!07 janv. 202300:51:25

Well, you asked and I listened. In today’s show, we go back to a time when there was nothing on the show but this dorky trucker telling a story and a reading a couple of emails from listeners. This time around we’ve got a rant called “Scoot Over And Fix It Now!” We’ll also hear a bathroom story from Driver Dave and Wunuvakind sent in an audio clip about harassment and urban parking.

In this week's show, guest host Steven Gorman talks about the difference between accidents and incidents, and how neither should keep you from succeeding in your trucking career. And he backs that up by telling you about his roads mishaps and where he is now.

In the news segment, Steven talks about the top 10 largest private trucking companies, he’ll provide some further evidence to disprove the “truck driver shortage” myth, and he’ll site a survey telling how the public views truckers in 2022. TD183: Harassement In Trucking, Bad Weather Driving, Electric Truck Snafus, Legislating Bathrooms, & More17 déc. 202201:17:50

In this week’s trucking news, you’ll get winter driving tips from experienced drivers and you’ll learn if your employer can retaliate if you refuse to drive in bad weather. We’ll hear about the Department of Labor getting an earful about the newly-proposed rules on who qualifies as an independent contractor. California emissions Nazis are reeking havoc again, and we discover yet another chink in the electric truck armor.

Canada is finally getting ready for electronic logging devices, the FMCSA seeks to modify emergency exemptions, the crazy high harassment numbers in the trucking industry, and finally, a trucker’s rights to bathrooms goes to Congress and one trucker who really loves Kelly Clarkson! And it’s Christmas, so of course I’ll share my rendition of Twas The Night Before Christmas: Trucker Style. Might what to earmuff your kids for that one. LOL

As for listener feedback, @wunuvakind and @goose from the Trucker Dump Slack group weigh in on the new format of the show, and @goose also gives us some insight and additional tips on the winter pileup story we covered in the last episode. And last but not least, we hear a funny delivery story from Driver Dave.

TD182: Railroad Strike Avoided, Facebook Discriminates Against Female Truckers, Good/Bad Changes By States & FMCSA, & More03 déc. 202201:23:08

This week, we’re going to discuss Congress’ controversial intercession in the pending railroad strike, also, both the FMCSA and individual states are making it harder for truckers in some aspects, and easier in others, Facebook seems to be discriminating against female truckers when it comes to trucking jobs, I’ll tell you about a government funded research grant that might actually yield something useful for a change of pace, and to keep you out of trouble, we’ll also talk about what you need to know about counting the costs before you go into owning your own truck and what you should do if you find yourself in one of those massive weather-related pileups.

All that plus more news, and a couple of listener feedbacks from Steve and Trailrider. Steve shares his honest opinion about new format of the show, while Trailrider asked me a question about the 60 hours in 7 days vs. the 70 hours in 8 days, that frankly, I need your help answering.

TD160: Really Late Trucking News01 mai 202202:24:31

Well, I’ve been holding onto this episode with the hopes that I’d be able to include a main topic, but that’s still in the works. So I guess there’s no logical reason to keep hanging onto all this old news. Some of it isn’t all that relevant anymore, like the whole Canadian border thing and Covid news. But there’s also some more relevant topics here, including all the typical stuff like recalls, more safety blitzes (not the NFL version), moving forward with both the infrastructure plan and futuristic trucks, drug and health updates, and of course, all the things our government is up to.

Additionally, Scott Gunter a.k.a. Killjoy gives me a chance to drool all over his submission for the Trucker Grub segment. This time around, most of the listener feedback segment consists of new drivers wanting to join the Trucker Dump Slack group, but two long-time listeners also pipe in on mechanical woes and YouTube videos.

TD159: All Trucking News; All The Time24 janv. 202203:28:10

It’s been over two months since the last episode, so we’re skipping a main topic today to get caught up on a crap-ton of news. We’ve got several recalls, new emissions and inspection standards, autonomous and electric trucks, Teamster elections, the top 500 trucking companies, fixing the supply chain issues, tips for driving in bad weather or avoiding it altogether, and new places for truckers to park.

We’ve also got big stories on the proposed vaccine mandate, lots of new legislation, and a trucker who got a major break on his sentence after a fiery wreck. And most importantly, we’ll start the show with some hand signals every trucker should know to combat human trafficking.

We’ll point you to some good southern eatin’ in the Trucker Grub segment, and in the Listener Feedback segment, we’ll discuss everything from broken websites, to the future of trucking, to some clarification on the latest Hours of Service rules.

TD158: How Do We Attract The Next Generation In Trucking?06 nov. 202103:25:39

Today we talk to Dave Dein, a co-founder of The Next Generation In Trucking Association, which is a non-profit organization who’s goal is to get more young people interesting in trucking and logistics careers. What they’re doing is pretty cool, so you’ll want to stick around for that.

But first we’ve got more news than you can haul without a permit, including a dangerous social media game involving truckers, changes to the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse that could affect your livelihood, more on autonomous vehicles, a proposed electric vehicle tax, a new device that fleets could use to restrict driver’s use of cell phones, and of course, a whole bunch about the impending vaccine mandate.

Also, money for truck parking is back on the agenda, care packages for the troops are requested, warehouses are full, the problem at the seaports, more on the lease-operator legal issue, the history of the owner-operator, and legislating bathrooms for truckers. Yes, really.

The Trucker Grub segment gets a retraction, and listener feedback features a whole mess of new Trucker Dump Slack members, gear recommendations, and me getting scolded. What’s new? LOL

TD157: The First 6 Months Of Trucking - Part 228 sept. 202103:07:03

We’re back with Part 2 of the interview with Zach Smacher, about what it’s like for a new trucker in their first 6 months. We left off with a cliffhanger, so that’s where we’ll pick it back up.

But first we’re going to talk about the FMCSA’s new rules about COVID extensions and how they’re bending over backwards to get new truckers into the industry. We’ll also talk about President Biden’s vaccine mandate and how that’s going to affect the trucking industry. And in related news, how to get your own authority if you want to sidestep the mandate. LOL

What else? The pros and cons of working for a union shop, no government money for truck parking, higher per diem rates starting soon, lower Social Security benefits expected in the future, a naughty fuel card company, changes to an age-old technology - the CB, and with winter coming up, I’ll point you to a great resource for chain laws state-by-state.

In the listener feedback segment, we’ll congratulate a new CDL holder, help another potential new trucker, and a couple of drivers want to discuss hazardous materials handling.

TD156: The First 6 Months Of Trucking - Part 109 sept. 202102:25:48

In today’s main topic, we’ve got the first part of a 2-part interview with a new trucker about his first six months in the industry. Lots of good info here for anyone looking to get into the industry.

But first we’ve got a couple of recalls, soon-to-be obsolete electronic log devices, possible new vision standards from the FMCSA, and yet another COVID exemption extension.

We’ll also talk about the FMCSA’s new driver advisory panel’s first meeting and we’ll hear some reactions to it. We’ll discuss electric vehicles, slack adjuster no-nos, and more truck parking coming to Indiana.

Get out your sweet tooth for the Trucker Grub segment and in the listener feedback segment, we’ll discuss, everything from trucker TV shows, burning trucks and trailers, and trucker gear. And be sure to stick around to see if you can help a really short woman figure out how to become a trucker.

TD155: Yes, More Trucking News10 août 202102:25:56

Got a whopper of a show for you today, but once again, there is no main topic. I promise this isn’t a new trend. I’ve got some good things lined up for the next few episodes. But for now there’s a fairly long intro where I talk about my company’s hazmat issues, per diem tax breaks, adverse driving conditions, other trucking podcasts, and driving a fancy car.

In the news segment, we’ve got more truck recalls, yet another safety blitz, bridges reopening, toll plazas closing, rising driver pay, new insights into driver shortages and women’s affect on it, and what to do if you don’t pass your DOT physical.

Also, our governments are working on taxing truckers more, more COVID extensions, proposed legislation on speed limiters, sleep apnea, liability insurance, and infrastructure, all while putting the kibosh on the highway trust fund. Huh?? Oh, and teaming with a robot. Double huh??

On a lighter note, Pilot Flying J is giving away prizes this summer, there’s a popular movie about truckers on Netflix, and in not so light news, a fleet owner has a controversial idea on how to increase safety.

I’ll also announce the winners of the Trace tablet and the $50 for the Trucker Grub contest and we’ll hear from listeners on the topics of truck parking, speed limiters, the VMT tax, Walmart reefers, a longtime trucker retiring, and we’ll catch up with a past interviewee and see what’s up with him.

TD154: Trucking News And Free Stuff!25 mai 202101:58:07

We don’t have a main topic today, but we do have a mega crap ton of news, some listener feedback, and a fun contest that could win you $50.

So about this news; we’ve got a handful of truck recalls, Canadian ELDs, lots of driverless trucks being ordered, some useful tips for tax time, another reroute around a busted bridge, and yet another safety blitz (yes, really). But hey, all is not lost. We'll also tell you what qualifies as an out-of-service violation when it comes to lights and hours-of-service. This one might surprise you. We’ll even discuss how some of these violations are actual crimes! Whaaaa?

We’ll address some myths around the COVID vaccine and if you’re still freaked out, how to clean your truck to reduce your chances of getting it. But hey, at least you won’t die from a truck rollover if this prototype fifth wheel makes it to market!

And once again, the powers that be are making truckers unhappy with talks of the new Vehicle Miles Traveled tax, the push for speed limiters and automatic emergency braking, and why DOT physicals still won’t go directly onto your CDL for years to come. Not to mention the courts ruling against lease operators and a survey showing not much faith in the Biden administration. But hey, at least a new FMCSA director has been nominated. So there’s that.

And to finish up, we’ll show you how to value your time more, how to extend the life of your DPF filter (yes, I realize that’s redundant), and I’ll tell you about a new addition to the Garmin dēzl™ OTR series of truck GPSs and a new feature they all have.

What? I told you there was a lot of news. Did you think I was lying?

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot. I'm also giving away this Trace tablet from FleetUp to the first person who emails me at TruckerDump@gmail.com

TD153: Truckers And Tax Time09 avr. 202102:02:42

In today’s show, we discuss truckers and their taxes in an interview with Mason War, CEO and Co-Founder of COS Accounting & Tax. Lots of good info on 1099 drivers here.

But first, we’ve got the obligatory Covid-related news including more extensions and vaccines, the Canadian Electronic log roll-out, lawsuits involving Prime,Inc., sleeper berth pay, and independent contractors, and I’ll tell you when to expect the next safety blitz.

The government has been busy too, with pushes for underride guards, speed limiters, mileage-based taxes, and more truck tolls. President Biden wants to fortify the supply chain while the FMCSA warns truck drivers of massive job losses. All while thousands of drivers are being lost to drug testing. Yeah, that makes sense.

Thankfully we have listener feedback to cheer us up; from Danny, Taran, Shawn, and of course Stevie.

TD152: When Should You Look For A New Trucking Job?08 févr. 202102:02:42

In today’s main topic we talk about how you know when you should switch trucking jobs. But first, lots of news involving COVID, new elog information for both the US and Canada, and lots of changes coming in 2021 due to a new presidential administration, including a scary one involving sleep apnea testing.

Also, truckers stick it to California, Walmart and driverless trucks, the big UPS sell-out, new vision and testing standards for CDL holders, and of course, the obligatory truck recalls.

In the listener feedback segment we’ll hear about hatred of elogs, a driving school and training story, COVID vaccinations, and I get called out by a 15-year-old. We’ll also hear about a great BBQ joint in the Trucker Grub segment.

TD151: In-Depth Review Of The Garmin dēzl OTR1000 GPS Truck GPS02 janv. 202101:49:30

Got something a bit different for the main topic today. I had the opportunity to test Garmin’s newest truck GPS called the dēzl™ OTR1000, and I’ll share my thoughts in a video review.

But first, lots of news to discuss including truck recalls, winter driving prep, and COVID vaccines, waivers, and how it relates to workman’s comp. Autonomous and electric vehicles are always a hot topic, including how electric trucks might attract new truck drivers to the industry.

We’ve got an update on the closed bridge in Cincinnati, we’ll learn about fancy pants smart trailers, a request to be the new head of the FMCSA, and a DOT physical exemption for one large company. HUH?

We’ve got a non-traditional Trucker Grub segment this time and we’ll hear about Stevie driving for a carnival and musical guest, Driver Dave will give us his origin story.

And we’ll top it all off with the annual reading of ’Twas The Night Before Christmas - Trucker Style.

TD150: Trucking News Galore!07 nov. 202002:02:59

Well there is no main topic topic today, but we’ve got enough news, listener feedback, and other stuff to choke a hippo… provided a hippo would try to eat stuff like that.

Anywho, we’ll be covering truck recalls and lots of stuff about truck brakes, myths about truck inspections, truck parking, new hours-of-service clarifications, and we’ll learn about winter fuel additives.

Good news on the economy and trucker pay is always good, but dash cams, drug testing, delayed driver training guidelines, and drivers getting sued, not so much.

Listener feedback covers, trucking schools, elogs, “smart” trailers, autonomous trucking, and of course, tailgating truckers.
