Belgium: A pilgrimage to the battle sites of World War I20 Apr 202000:11:35
In this episode of Trip Notes, we revisit a story published by Herald journalist Nicholas Jones, about his trip to Belgium and to the battle sites of World War I.

"A deflated rugby ball and a couple of plastic poppies mark Dave Gallaher's grave. Scrawls, handwritten in Vivid marker pens, make it look like a memento from a modern rugby match: the sort that a child hangs over the halfway tunnel, hoping his heroes will sign," writes Jones.

Chef Gareth Stewart on how to beat food FOMO, and the best things to see - and eat - in England11 Nov 201900:30:07
Each episode, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, brought to you by House of Travel, we chat with Gareth Stewart.

As executive chef for the Nourish Group, British expat Gareth Stewart knows a thing or two about food. So there was no better candidate to be our guest on a special food-themed episode.

Stewart has most recently created the excellent menu for Nourish’s new gastropub venture The Brit, but when he’s not busy there — or at one of the group’s other 12 restaurants (Euro, Andiamo, Jervois Steak House and more) — he is also an avid traveller. And he has a theory about why some of our favourite travel memories involve food.

He also tells us how to beat food FOMO when travelling (trust us, it's a real problem), and we talk about the best things to see - and eat - in England.

Tom Sainsbury, the pressure to pack light, and why we love LA07 Oct 201900:31:25
Each episode, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, brought to you by House of Travel, we chat with comedian/actor/playwright and Auckland mayoral hopeful Tom Sainsbury.

Tom, who stars in the new season of Wellington Paranormal on TVNZ 2, loves travel but - like his comedy - his favourite destinations are a little off beat. We talk Sweden, Jersey and the Chatham Islands... then bring it back to more familiar territory with our Destination of the Week, LA.

Plus, we talk about packing and the pressure to travel light. Is it possible to only travel with hand luggage? What are the essentials you should always take with you? And who says you can't take a giant suitcase on holiday, anyway?

Cruise special: Big ships, small ships, luxury sailings and the world's best ports of call30 Sep 201900:30:03
Each episode, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, brought to you by House of Travel, we chat with NZ hospitality legend Judith Tabron.

This month, she's hitting our screens twice a week as co-host of TVNZ's My Restaurant Rules, a reality TV series searching for New Zealand's best out-of-the way restaurant.

For this cruise-themed episode of Trip Notes, Judith was the perfect guest - she's been on eight cruise holidays in destinations ranging from the Caribbean and Canada; Greece and Nice; and many more.

The meaning of travel writing in a Covid world16 Aug 202100:30:28
How do you run a travel magazine when you can't travel?

Somehow, despite the world being shut off for the last 18 months, the NZ Herald Travel magazine has been able to not only survive, but also thrive and become an award-winning magazine.

But we're not going to lie - it's been a tough road.

In our final episode of this season's Trip Notes travel podcast, travel writer Juliette Sivertsen, Deputy Editor Maggie Wicks and Editor Stephanie Holmes take a look down memory lane, and chat about some of the challenges we've had producing two weekly travel magazines in a Covid era.

The episode was inspired by Juliette Sivertsen's article, Why The Australia Bubble Pause Is Giving Me An Identity Crisis, which you can read here: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/transtasman-bubble-why-the-australian-bubble-pause-is-giving-me-an-identity-crisis/YVJCQMPSMNKMPNGDN4ZH4Z4NWU/

Passenger shaming, to recline or not to recline, and the place worth going back to again and again...02 Sep 201900:27:06
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, we chat with Lorna Subritzky.

Best known as Coast's days host, her alter-ego is Lorna the Explorer - she loves to travel and is often posting glamorous, envy-inducing tropical holiday pics on her Instagram. But Lorna reveals she was quite a late bloomer when it comes to travel ... now she's certainly making up for lost time.

Lorna tells us about the travel experience that made her cry, as well as her favourite destination - a place she loves so much, she's been back 14 times.

Plus, we talk about the worst passenger behaviour we've ever seen on a plane. Are you guilty of any of these air travel faux pas?

Once you've listened, please leave us a review and tell us some of your favourite destinations - we'd love to know where you're travelling, and where you're dreaming of.

Michael Galvin, why Fiji is off limits, and facing up to failure in London19 Aug 201900:30:38
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, we chat with Michael Galvin.

He's known and loved in New Zealand for playing Dr Chris Warner in the country's longest-running soap opera Shortland Street, a role he's had since the show started in 1994... apart from a four year break early on.

He left the show in 1996 and moved to London, but his dreams of finding fame and fortune there didn't quite work out. In a refreshingly candid conversation, Michael tells us how it felt to fail and how he's found peace with the decisions he made.

We also talk about Fiji - one of Stephanie and Tim's favourite destinations - but Michael reveals what it's like to visit there when you're the star of the nation's best-loved TV show. Clue: it's crazy.

Once you've listened, please leave us a review and tell us some of your favourite destinations - we'd love to know where you're travelling, and where you're dreaming of.

Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, we talk to Stacey Morrison.

Stacey is quite possibly the busiest woman in New Zealand. Not only does she co-host The Hits Drive Show with Mike Puru, she’s also an ambassador for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, a best-selling author, a teacher at Massey University, and mum to three children.

And somehow, among all that, she still manages to fit in a healthy love of travel.

From her first overseas trip to Japan as a high school exchange student, to family holidays in Hawaii, to eye-opening trips to Russia, Stacey has loved — and learnt a lot — from seeing the world.

She talks to us about the resilience she needed on her first trip overseas, what makes her a "Macgyver mama", and why she thinks all New Zealanders have a voyager spirit within.

There's also talk of how she enjoyed a Magic Mike strip show in Las Vegas, but Stacey assures us it was only because of "the art"...

Once you've listened, please leave us a review and tell us some of your favourite destinations - we'd love to know where you're travelling, and where you're dreaming of.

Meet the 38-year-old CEO of a $400 million travel company, plus tips for being an ethical traveller08 Jul 201900:27:09
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, we're joined by James Thornton, CEO of Intrepid Travel, who tells us what it's like to be CEO of a global travel company with an annual revenue now well over $400 million. We also chat about his favourite places to travel, and some issues close to his heart.

Born in the UK, now based in Melbourne, James has been in the hot seat of Intrepid for more than three years, but has been with the company for more than 14. He says he loved travel from an early age and after starting his career path in investment management he realised "making rich people richer" was "a terrible way to exist professionally". He set out to find a job he was passionate about. "I was most definitely not good enough to play football for the England football team, so I pursued an interest in travel."

His first job with Intrepid was as a sales and marketing coordinator, and over the years he's risen through the business, taking on a number of different roles, before becoming the company's first non-founding managing director at the age of 31. Now 38 (he's had a birthday since we recorded this episode!), James is CEO of Intrepid Group.

We talk to James about some of the best places he's travelled - both for work and for pleasure - and the incredible experiences he's had over the years.

We also talk about the concept of "greenwashing" - what is it, why does it matter, and what do we, as consumers, need to be aware of when booking holidays and travel experiences.

Once you've listened, please leave us a review and tell us some of your favourite destinations - we'd love to know where you're travelling, and where you're dreaming of.

Michelle Langstone, tips for group travel, and do you need to be rich to visit Paris?24 Jun 201900:22:03
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, brought to you by Intrepid Travel, we chat to Kiwi actor Michelle Langstone, star of Westside, 800 Words, McLeod's Daughters, The Bad Seed, Go Girls, The Almighty Johnsons and many more.

When we invited Michelle into the studio to talk about the joys of group travel, we weren’t exactly prepared for her response. “I have never, ever, ever done a group trip, and I never, ever will,” she said, vehemently. Listen to find out if we manage to convince her to change her mind.

Michelle also reveals the power of a foreign destination to help heal a broken heart, and admits her first holiday as an adult was a little bit reckless, skipping drama school to go on a tropical holiday with a friend.

And, we pick Paris as our Destination of the Week. What are the best things to see and do there? Why do so many people love it? And do you need to have a lot of money to really enjoy the best of it?

Leave us a review and tell us some of your favourite destinations - we'd love to know where you're travelling, and where you're dreaming of.

Clarke Gayford, travelling with a baby, and why you should discover the Solomon Islands10 Jun 201900:26:47
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. On this episode, brought to you by Intrepid Travel, we chat to Clarke Gayford.

He's now often referred to as New Zealand's First Man, but Clarke Gayford has a long history of working in travel - he hosted TV series Getaway, he finished in the top 10 of Tourism Queensland's viral competition to win the Best Job in the World, and now hosts Fish of the Day - a travel, fishing and cooking show that takes him all around New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Clarke talks about his childhood memories of growing up in Gisborne and how it inspired his wanderlust, he tells us why he loves places like Niue and Vanuatu, and we discover he and Tim once spent time at the same Club Med resort... possibly at the same time.

As well as a busy TV presenter, Clarke is also father to an almost one-year-old daughter, Neve. He and his fiance, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, split their time between Auckland and Wellington and, as a frequent flyer, he has some great tips for plane travel with babies.

And our Destination of the Week is the Solomon Islands, a place yet to be discovered by most tourists but somewhere Clarke believes is a South Pacific paradise ready and waiting for those looking for adventure.

Daniel Faitaua, over-tourism and why we love New Zealand27 May 201900:26:22
Each fortnight, Trip Notes hosts Stephanie Holmes and Tim Roxborogh are joined by a special guest to talk all about travel. For our very first episode, brought to you by Intrepid Travel, TVNZ Breakfast newsreader Daniel Faitaua is with us in the studio.

Daniel tells us more about his former life as an Air New Zealand flight attendant - what he enjoyed about it, and why he gave it up. He reveals the highs and lows of his travelling life so far - his first overseas trip as a wide-eyed 16-year-old, his favourite family holidays, and the dream destinations still on his list.

We also talk about one of the biggest problems facing the global travel industry right now - over-tourism. What is it, which places are affected by it, and what can we do to prevent it?

Each episode, we'll pick a Destination of the Week and where better to start than with New Zealand? We talk about why we love it, some of our favourite spots around the country, and why there's no place like home.

They also discuss boating holidays in New Zealand and abroad, and their favourite memories of being out on the water.

Splendid isolation: Why we love remote holidays07 Jun 202100:37:03
Ever wish you could just get away from it all? The Travel team loves going to truly remote places, and this week, we're covering our favourites.

Listen to Maggie Wicks' story about 'podhopping' her way around the South Island, staying in the truly remote PurePods in Kaikoura, Waipara Valley and the Banks Peninsula. Then join Maggie, travel writer Juliette Sivertsen, and travel editor Stephanie Holmes discussing their favourite far-out destinations, and whether it's scary to stay far from civilisation.

From simple huts to remote luxurys, and from being alone, to being alone in a crowd, we have some really far out adventures to share this week.

This episode covers the Coromandel, the South Island's Routeburn and Hollyford tracks, windy Iceland, the Bolivian Salt Plains and newly opened Sydney - one of the last places you might expect to experience being alone.
