Melody shares her thoughts and feelings before going into the Deadhorse 50mile race! She also shares what she has learned about training during HER training!

Episode Takeaways:

-A treadmill is a great tool to improve your running form
-Add strides to your easy runs (30sec fun fast runs)
-Do speedwork! Trail runners forget how important this is
-Don't obsess over your heart rate zones
-Try running based off of rate of percieved exertion instead of heart rate

Chiropractic Care and Ultra Running with Dr. John Vigil | S3E1017 May 202201:00:11

Dr. John Vigil (aka @thestretchdoc, Doctor or Chiropractic), tells us his story of how he got into ultra-running, how he got burned out, and how he got into ultra-running AGAIN. Dr. John shares how chiropractic care can benefit an ultra runner, he also tells us how bodybuilding, triathlons, and other education/sports helped him become a better ultra runner!

Some Gold Nuggets:

-GET A COACH
-Plug yourself into a running group that will stretch/push you
-Put in the time
-See a chiro/PT/Dr if your pain lasts longer than 2-3 days. If the pain keeps returning, GO SEEK HELP BEFORE IT GETS WORSE
-Dynamic Stretching > Static Stretching
-Separate your running gear when flying, just in case your luggage is lost!
-Don't start anything new two weeks before your event!

Dr. John's Advice:
-Enjoy it
-Try different coaches until you find one you like
-Don't spend too much money on gear
-Focus on your nutrition "garbage in = garbage out"

Pick Goals That Scare the Crap Out of You w/ Joe Corcione | S3E726 Apr 202201:09:37

"I was NOT born that way" is how Joe responded when we asked how he got into ultra-running. In fact, Joe was often picked last in gym class. He has struggled with bouts of major anxiety and depression and even was addicted to Adderall for a time. Joe decided it was time to get his life together and he started by lifting weights.

Weightlifting turned into Spartan races, which turned into triathlons (including an ULTRA triathlon) which ultimately turned into ultra-running.

In this episode, Joe talks about how he went from being the last kid picked in gym class to coming in 11th place in his first 100-mile race!

Some things you'll learn in this episode:

-How to add weightlifting and speed training into your routine
-How to find balance between work/life/training
-The importance of sleep
-Where to find the will to keep moving forward when things get tough
-The importance of setting big goals/stretching yourself

Some episode takeaways/power quotes:

-You can do anything in life, but you can't do everything
-The suffering only stops when you cover the distance

Ultra-Running Nutrition is NOT Intuitive with Julie Shobe | S3E505 Apr 202201:01:53

Did you know that 30-50% of ultra-runners struggle with gastrointestinal distress? Have you ever wondered why you felt nauseous on a long run or during a race? Julie Shobe, a nutritionist for beginner ultra-runners, tells us WHY we might be feeling nauseous and HOW to combat GI issues during training and on race day! Listen to the episode to learn more!

How to get started with better nutrition according to Julie:

AVOID DEHYDRATION: drink 14oz of water every hour and 250mg of sodium every hour (or500mg of sodium for every 1L of water)

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR BODY TO EAT WHILE RUNNING:
1. Start with carbs and find your baseline (how many g of carbs do you eat every hour?)
2. Slowly increase your carb intake (eat 10g of carbs more than you do every hour until you get to 60g of carbs every hour)
3. Add sodium and protein

WHAT TO EAT DURING A LONG RUN: Eat a variety of foods high in carbs and protein. Avoid food with high fat. Here are some ideas
-Quesadilla
-PB&J
-Pizza
-Cheese stick
-Nuts
-Protein bar
-Protein shake

HOW TO EAT OFF OF THE TRAIL:
-60% carbs
-Then protein
-Then fruits and veggies
-Fat will just find its way in there!

CAFFEINE EQUATION:
Body Weight in Kilograms x 9 = __________mg of Caffeine intake per 24 hours.

WHY WE GET NASEOUS WHEN WE RUN:
-Under fueling
-Stomach "falls asleep"
-Not enough salt
-Not enough protein
-Not enough fluid
-Waiting too long to start eating

OTHER TAKEAWAYS:
-Eat protein during your long runs so it can start to rebuild and strengthen your muscles
-Carbs = energy. Protein = rebuild/recovery. Fat = hormones.
-Practice running and eating through the night! (12am-5am is the hardest!)
-Intermittent fasting/running fasted is proven to show an increase in cortisol levels in female athletes
-Peeing consistently on a run MIGHT be a sign that you are not getting enough electrolytes
-CARBS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!

You Don't Have to Kill Yourself to Be an Ultra Runner | S2E1217 Jan 202200:48:55

Jacob and Melody share their experiences running Deadhorse 2021.

Life updates:
Melody is doing medical massage in Ogden UT (contact her here to make an appointment: www.melodybateman.biz)
Jacob started a flooring business. Contact him through our Instagram page @trailto100 to get a quote.

Main Takeaways:
-If you don't feel like running...Just force yourself to put on your running shoes and run anyways! Give yourself permission to turn around early if you still don't feel like running after that!
-Do what is best for you, don't compare yourself to other runners. (Melody dropped her 50mile to the 50k, Jacob decided to run the 50miler even though his training wasn't as good as he wanted it to be. They both made the best decisions for themselves.)
-You don't have to kill yourself to be an ultra-runner! Jacob finished his race without running more than 20 miles during the training season! (Take into consideration that Jacob has been running ultra-distances for about 3 years now...But you can build up to that point too if you want to!)

Becoming an Ultra Runner w/Andrea Christensen | S2E1101 Nov 202100:59:42

Andrea Christensen joins the podcast to share how a single mother found healing and strength through ultra running in the mountains. Here is a bit about Andrea Christensen.

1. When did you first start ultra running?

2017

2. How did you become interested in ultra running?

I had been a road runner for 20 years, had a friend bring me along on a trail run, and I was immediately hooked.

3. Why do you run ultras?

For the adventure, for the opportunity to see beautiful things, to be able to experience big highs and big lows and everything in between, to practice doing hard things.

4. Favorite ultra?

I honestly have loved every one I've done in very different ways. If I had to pick one, I'd probably say the Skyline 55k.

5. Best Advice for beginner ultra runners?

Be kind to yourself and to your body as much as possible. Remember that there's so much value in both the runs and races that go well and in those that don't. Eat enough. Sleep. Cheer on everyone else around you. Listen to everyone's advice and then do what's right for you.

Wasatch 100 Race Recap W/Josh Bryant | S2E1025 Oct 202100:40:33

Josh Bryant shares his story about running the Wastach 100 for the first time this year. He had a goal to finish in under 20 hours! Unfortunately, Josh did not reach his ‘A’ goal…or even his ‘B’ goal! BUT, he got his ‘C’ goal of finishing the race which makes him an elite athlete in our eyes!

Josh said he just didn’t feel quite right during this race which often happens to runners! Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what “went wrong.” These are the things Josh learned from his experience:

-Spend more time in high elevation for a high elevation race (race specific training!)

-Eat solid foods sooner (Josh didn’t eat solid foods until the late afternoon of his run. He ate gels up until that point)

-Carry a “fun” food with you for an uplift when you are feeling down. Josh’s “fun” food is chili fries!

Even thought Josh soon knew he wasn’t going to reach his goal, he never stopped and never doubted that he’d finish this grueling race! I think we can all learn a lesson here…To not give up when things don’t go according to plan!

The Importance of Cross Training- Dugway Ultras | S2E917 Oct 202100:36:53

Melody and Jacob share their experience running the Dugway Trail and Ultra Run on Oct 2. 2021. The main take away from this race: CROSS TRAIN!

 What Jacob has recently learned:
-Do more cross training (he is doing insanity workouts and going to kick boxing classes)
-Do speed work (because we've been doing A LOT of long slow runs...So now we are adding in speed work to get faster!)
-Do race specific running (Ex. run flat if you’re racing flat, run hills if you’re racing hills!)

What Melody has learned recently:
-It’s okay and EVEN GOOD to spend time in zone 3 (as long as you aren’t spending ALL of your time here!)
-There is no such thing as “running rules” because everyone’s body is different
-If you are looking for a coach, find a coach that fits your style of training!
-Don’t do more than 1-4 races a year!
-Work in mobility work into your training (make sure your mobility work includes mainly strengthening, because that is how you will see permanent range of motion changes. Melody is adding karate into her cross training routine for core strength and hip mobility).

Melody’s time: 4:04:47 – 1st place in the women

Jacob’s time: 6:34:21 – 6th place in men

Becoming an Ultra Runner w/Sherrie Shepherd | S2E811 Oct 202101:04:25

"I am nothing...I realized how bad I wanted it...I want this so bad...So I started moving faster...I climbed that hill...I didn't stop once...Then I got to the top of the hill." These are some of the words spoken by Sherrie Shepherd as she came to the end of her first 100 mile race this year. Her story is inspiring as well as educational. In this episode, Sherrie shares the most spiritual running experience she has had thus far in her running career. She shares her advice about body love, nutrition, and mindset. Get ready to feel all the feels and get ready to run, because that’s all you’re going to want to do after you hear this story.

 A little more about Sherrie:
Sherrie Shepherd is a single mom of 5 kids ages 8-20. She is a running coach, a life coach, and a professional piano player! Sherrie has released several albums and singles that you can find on most music apps, including Spotify and iTunes. (Link below).  Sherrie started running for the sole purpose of losing baby weight after her 3rd kid and she immediately fell in love with it. Since then, Sherrie has run 24 road marathons, a few 50ks, the Bryce Canyon virtual 50miler, the Squaw Peak 50, and just recently ran her first 100-mile race! (Which we hear all about in this episode). She considers herself an ultra-adventurer as she has completed multiple ultra-feats as well, including the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim and the Teton Circumnavigation. Sherrie said that she found healing in the mountains during some of the most painful experiences of her life and that running, quite literally, has saved her.

Sherrie’s advice to a beginner ultra-runner:

-Ease into it to avoid burnout

-Be a part of the scene (pace, volunteer, ect.)

-Your body can do more than you realize. You just have to believe in it, then put in the work. (<<THIS!)

Melody’s takeaways: “I learned a lot about nutrition and body love! I’m going to try intuitive eating and would encourage every runner who listens to this to spend more time communicating with their body!”

Jacob’s takeaways: “I love how calm Sherrie was before her race. I think it’s important to realize that you’re probably not going to finish every race and that’s okay. Even the best runners in the world DNF. I’m going to practice going into each race with the mindset of ‘whatever happens is what is supposed to happen’.”

Eliminate Stress-Crimson Canyon Ultra | S2E704 Oct 202100:28:59

Panic Attack: a sudden feeling of acute and disabling anxiety, sometimes so severe that one might believes they are about to die. Melody experienced her first panic attack this year in a tent after a series of stressful circumstances. Unfortunately, her training was affected by all the stressors in her life and she has taken a few steps back in her training (well, atleast physcailly...She has grown in understanding and mental toughness, that's for sure!) Melody shares what she has learned through her experiences this year and how her run at the Crimson Canyon Ultras taught her an important lesson about eliminating stress!

Ways you can eliminate stress:
-Quit your job (no seriously, if it's not the right fit for you, find something else!)
-Turn off stats on your watch (HR, VO2 max, performance condition (garmin) )
-Run by feel - Don't forget what it's like to ENJOY running. If you find yourself starting to dread your runs, that is a sign of burn out!
-RECOVER! Take breaks and make sure you are getting enough sleep! Mike Mcknight suggests a 6mo off season and a 6mo on season.
-Realize that life is going to happen and have faith that when set backs happen, you will come back stronger

Jacob placed 5th in the 25k Crimson Canyon Ultra. Time: 2:54:46
Melody placed 5th in the Women 25k (19th overall). Time: 3:37:43

*Crimson Canyon Ultra Stats:
