| Has Trail Running Lost Its Soul? | EP 790 | 15 Jul 2026 | 01:12:47 | |
Trail running has grown from a small community of passionate runners into a global sport, bringing bigger races, better gear, international competition, and more opportunities than ever before. Gaël Dutigny shares a firsthand account of witnessing UTMB from its very first edition in 2003 and reflects on how its evolution mirrors the growth of trail running itself. The conversation explores both sides of that growth, from crowded lotteries and commercialization to innovations in equipment, race organization, and worldwide access to incredible events. Along the way, Gaël, Don, and Scott discuss what makes iconic races so special, why local races still matter, and how runners can stay connected to the welcoming culture that first drew so many to the trails. It's a thoughtful discussion about preserving the soul of trail running while embracing the sport's exciting future. Links:

| You're Probably Using Caffeine Wrong | EP 789 | 09 Jul 2026 | 01:03:54 | |
Caffeine is one of the most researched performance enhancers in endurance sports, yet most runners know surprisingly little about how to use it effectively. In this conversation, Stone Creek Coffee founders Eric Resch and Amy Balestrieri separate the science from the myths, discussing when caffeine actually helps performance, why timing matters more than quantity, and how too much can hurt your sleep and recovery. They also explore why that morning cup of coffee is about far more than caffeine, touching on the rituals, psychology, and community that make coffee such an important part of endurance culture. Along the way, you'll learn about caffeine tolerance, race-day strategies, common misconceptions like dehydration, and even what goes into producing a truly great cup of coffee. You'll come away with a better understanding of how to make caffeine work for you and a new appreciation for the cup of coffee that starts so many great adventures. | EP 780: The Woman Who Ran 600 Miles | 06 May 2026 | 00:57:34
Megan Eckert returns to Trail Runner Nation after an extraordinary stretch in endurance racing, including a third place at Cocadona 250, setting a women's world record at Big's Backyard Ultra and becoming the first woman to run more than 600 miles in six days. She explains why backyard ultras are less about speed and more about solving the strange little puzzle of time, sleep, food, heat, pacing, and decision-making, one hour at a time. The conversation gets into what happens when the body starts swelling after days of effort, how recovery has to be tested carefully, and why a runner's "toolbox" matters more than a perfect race plan. Megan also shares how mantras, gratitude, crew support, short sleep strategies, and breaking huge goals into smaller chunks helped her keep moving when the mental fog rolled in. The big takeaway is that toughness is not always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it looks like patience, curiosity, a good crew, and the willingness to step back into the corral one more time. Links:

Megan closes with a simple message: the best attribute is curiosity, because you never know what you are capable of until you show up. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Join ultra runners Jennifer Russo and Megan Eckert to discuss backyard ultras, a niche of ultra trail running. They explain that backyard ultras are last-man-standing races where runners complete a 4.167 mile lap every hour until only one person is remaining. Jennifer holds the world record with 74 yards (308 miles) set last month at Capital Backyard Ultra in Lorton, VA. She beat the previous record of 68 laps set in 2020 by Courtney Dauwalter, while Megan won her first backyard ultra at Saguaro Showdown last month with the 4th highest total "yards" 65. | EP 683: Sh!t You Don't Do on the Trail - Western States Edition | 26 Jun 2024 | 01:12:49
We recently replayed an episode from 2017 called, "Sh!t You Don't Do on the Trail" with Tim Twietmeyer and Bob Crowley. We had so much fun walking down memory lane, we thought we should update it for 2024. Since we are near the start of Western States 100, we thought we'd skew it towards this race, but many of the principles mentioned are applicable wherever you are running. And of course, it wouldn't be in TRN style without gamifying the episode :). So Bob and Tim used descriptive but cryptic titles for each topic. We have to guess what they are referring to. We hope you have fun playing along. Tim Twietmeyer is Vice President of the Western States Endurance Run Board and board member since 1996. He is also the only person to finish the race 25 times....all under 24 hours! Oh.....and he won the race FIVE times! Bob Crowley is a past president of ITRA, the International Trail Running Association, and a seasoned runner with notable finishes of over 80 ultras including 2019's Tor des Geants and the 2023 Tahoe 200 mile race. Both are members of History Expeditions, where they take their passion for history and bring it to life through expeditions that combine historical research and adventure. | EP 779: The Hidden Performance Cost of Sun Damage | 01 May 2026 | 00:54:19
Returning guest, coach Colleen Miracle, joins us to talk about something many trail runners know they should care about but often ignore: sun protection. The conversation is based on Colleen's UltraSignup article "Why Ultrarunners Face a Higher Risk of Skin Cancer and Decreased Running Performance." Colleen shares her own experience with stage-one skin cancer on her lip, which began as what looked like a small freckle but turned out to be a wound that would not heal. The episode gets practical fast, covering SPF 30, UPF clothing, sun hoodies, lip sunscreen, reapplication during races, altitude exposure, cloudy-day risk, and why a "base tan" is not real protection. For endurance athletes, the biggest takeaway is that sun damage is not just a long-term health issue; during long efforts, your body may divert energy toward cooling and repairing damaged skin instead of helping you keep moving. It is a useful, slightly uncomfortable reminder that protecting your skin may be as important to longevity in the sport as shoes, fueling, or strength work. Resources & Links:

| EP 680: Breaking Barriers in Women's Running | 07 Jun 2024 | 00:54:57 | |
We are joined by Maggie Mertens, the author of "Better Faster Farther: How Running Changed Everything We Know About Women," which challenges long-held beliefs about women in running. Starting with a powerful reminder from over a century ago, when a woman ran the first modern Olympic marathon without permission, the book reveals how women have faced relentless opposition from the medical establishment, media, and athletic associations. Despite these challenges, they ran barefoot, without sports bras, and sometimes disguised as men, defying quack science and societal norms. Mertens takes us from this boundary-breaking marathon in Greece in 1896 to today's ultra-marathons, like the Spine Race, where women have shattered records. The conversation explores the history of women in running, the progress made, and the lingering stereotypes and inequalities. It highlights the achievements of female athletes, the impact of Title IX, and the need for more research on women's bodies in sports. Overall, it sheds light on the importance of breaking down barriers and empowering women in the world of running. You can preorder the book now or buy it on June 18th when it is released. What if there was a way to instantly diagnose and address running issues right on the trail? In this episode, we talk about the new Trail Triage app. We speak with the team that developed the app answering these and other key questions:
Trail Triage is an innovative new tool that can assist runners, pacers, crew, and aid station volunteers tackle common challenges during runs. In this episode, we sit down with ultrarunning legend Hal Koerner and Ian Sharman to go beyond the race results and into the stories hidden between the aid stations. Hal also shares memorable moments from decades in the sport, including hallucinations, race-day mistakes, lessons from other legends, and the strange, beautiful chaos that unfolds after enough miles in the mountains. Along the way, we discuss how the sport has changed, from shoes and nutrition to the growing popularity of ultrarunning, while Hal remains the same smiling, endlessly curious runner with the grin that somehow survives even mile 90. | EP 776: Build Stronger Feet Before They Fail | 09 Apr 2026 | 01:02:07
In this follow-up conversation with Dr. Tonya Olson, we shift from fixing foot problems to preventing them by building stronger, more resilient feet before race day disaster strikes. Tonya explains that the biggest mistake runners make is not paying attention to their feet until something hurts, even though their feet have been quietly sending signals for months, like tiny grumpy trail prophets. The discussion explores how calluses, hot spots, toenails, and skin changes can reveal weaknesses in shoe choice, mobility, gait, and training habits. Tonya also unveils the surprising connection between foot problems and bigger biomechanical issues, explaining how limitations in the ankle, big toe, hips, and glutes can ripple down the kinetic chain like one bad domino tipping into another. We talk about simple weekly routines, mobility work, proprioception, and why "good enough" maintenance now can prevent a full-scale foot mutiny later. By the end, the episode makes a compelling case that resilient feet are not built in race week, but one small habit at a time. Resources & Links:

Your foot may be the smoke, but the fire could be somewhere upstream. 33:00 – Wobble Boards, Mobility, and Training Smarter The group discusses proprioception, ankle sprains, balance training, and which exercises actually transfer to better trail running. 48:00 – The Long Game: Keeping Your Feet Healthy for Decades Tonya explains why maintaining mobility and strength over time is the key to avoiding the stiff, cranky, "why does everything hurt now?" runner future Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
