12 Unexpected Benefits of Travel: Life Lessons I’ve Learned on the Road16 août 202600:26:55

Travel Gives You So Much More Than a Holiday

What if your next holiday could give you more than incredible photos, beautiful destinations and a few weeks away from work?

After more than 20 years of travelling, I’ve realised that some of the greatest benefits of travel have nothing to do with the destination. The real transformation happens in the moments when plans go wrong, you have to navigate somewhere unfamiliar, or you find yourself seeing everyday life through a completely different lens.

From discovering a secret 3am ferry in Samoa to navigating travel chaos in Spain and experiencing a major power outage in Granada, travel has taught me lessons I never expected to learn. And many of those lessons have followed me home.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • 12 unexpected life lessons travel can teach you
  • How travel develops problem-solving skills and adaptability
  • Why travelling can change your perspective and challenge your assumptions
  • How travel builds resilience and confidence
  • The unexpected ways travel can improve your financial awareness
  • How travel can strengthen relationships and create meaningful connections

How to Visit Petra, Jordan Without the Crowds: The Ultimate Petra Travel Guide09 août 202600:28:01

Petra was the reason I travelled to Jordan. I’d seen the Rose City in documentaries, books, travel feeds and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but nothing prepared me for the moment I walked through the Siq and saw the Treasury for the first time. It felt completely unreal... like I’d stepped into a film set, except this ancient city was very much real.

What surprised me even more was just how enormous Petra is. Over two days, I walked 26 kilometres and still felt like I’d barely scratched the surface. And while Petra can be busy, there are ways to experience this incredible ancient city with fewer people around... including one strategy that gave me several precious minutes at the Treasury almost completely alone.

In this episode of Tourist to Traveller, I’m sharing my practical guide to visiting Petra, Jordan, including how long you need, where to stay, when to visit, how to avoid the biggest crowds, what to see beyond the Treasury, and the things I wish I’d known before arriving.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why Petra is so much more than the famous Treasury
  • How many days you really need to explore Petra
  • The best strategy for experiencing the Treasury without the crowds
  • Why the Monastery is worth the hike
  • The best times of day for exploring and photography
  • Whether Petra by Night is worth adding to your itinerary
  • Important safety considerations, including heat and flash flooding
  • Why I don't recommend supporting animal tourism in Petra
  • Where to stay in Wadi Musa
  • My top tips for making the most of your Petra experience

Wadi Rum, Jordan: Why This Otherworldly Desert Belongs on Your Bucket List12 juil. 202600:24:11

Most travellers dream of visiting Jordan for one iconic reason: Petra. And while Petra absolutely deserves its place as one of the world's greatest archaeological wonders, there was another place that completely surprised me... Wadi Rum.

Known as the Valley of the Moon, Wadi Rum feels like stepping onto another planet. Towering sandstone mountains, endless red dunes, ancient rock formations and vast open skies create a landscape so dramatic that it has been used as a filming location for Mars in movies like The Martian and Lawrence of Arabia.

But what made Wadi Rum unforgettable wasn't just the scenery. It was the feeling of being completely disconnected from the outside world... sharing tea with Bedouin hosts, watching the desert transform at sunset, and standing beneath a sky full of stars with nothing but silence around me.

In this episode of Tourist to Traveller, I’m sharing exactly what it’s like to experience Wadi Rum, why staying overnight is essential, and how to make the most of your visit to one of Jordan’s most incredible bucket list destinations.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why Wadi Rum is one of the most unique places to visit in Jordan
  • What it’s really like to explore the desert on a Jeep safari
  • Why staying overnight in a Bedouin camp is a must-do experience
  • The best things to do in Wadi Rum, including sunrise, sunset and stargazing

The Ultimate 24-Hour Guide to Chefchaouen: How to Experience Morocco’s Blue City Without the Crowds05 juil. 202600:25:49

Chefchaouen doesn’t just photograph beautifully... it feels different the moment you arrive. Tucked into the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, this blue-washed city invites you to slow down, wander without a plan, and breathe a little deeper.

But here’s what most travellers get wrong: they rush it. Chefchaouen is often squeezed into a tight Morocco itinerary as a quick day trip, leaving just enough time for a few photos before the tour buses roll on.

In this episode, I’m sharing exactly how to spend 24 unrushed, magical hours in Chefchaouen... from sunrise wandering through empty blue alleyways to golden hour rooftops, local food spots, and the quiet moments that make this city unforgettable.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why Chefchaouen is worth more than a rushed day trip

23 Unmissable Things to See and Do in Palau, Micronesia27 juin 202600:27:44

Palau is one of those destinations that doesn’t just live up to the hype... it rewrites what you thought tropical travel could be. Remote, raw, and wildly beautiful, it’s a place where emerald islands rise out of electric-blue water, WWII history sits alongside ancient culture, and nature is protected.

Palau is a small island nation in Micronesia that consistently ranks as one of the world’s top destinations for nature, diving, and conservation-led travel... yet it still flies under the radar for many travellers.

When I first started planning Palau, I realised very quickly that this wasn’t a “turn up and wing it” kind of destination. It rewards curiosity, preparation, and travellers who want more than just pretty beaches.

In this episode, I’m sharing 23 unmissable things to see and do in Palau, based on first-hand experience... from kayaking through hidden lagoons and swimming with sharks, to ancient stone monoliths, waterfalls, cultural sites, and moments that genuinely stopped me in my tracks.

How I Travel With a Chronic Illness (CIRS): Honest Stories & Practical Travel Tips21 juin 202600:35:50

Travelling the world with a chronic illness isn’t something you often see talked about online, especially when the illness doesn’t “look” obvious. From the outside, my travels might seem carefree and high-energy, but behind every trip is careful planning, flexibility, and a deep understanding of my body.

What I Pack in My Carry-On for Long-Haul Flights (Comfort, Delays & Lost Luggage Covered)14 juin 202600:34:11

Long-haul flights are a fact of life when you’re a frequent flyer. They’re the gateway to bucket-list adventures… but they can also be uncomfortable, exhausting, and wildly unpredictable.

On a recent trip from Australia to the USA, a “quick” stopover in Dallas turned into a 24-hour airport survival situation when a once-in-a-century snowstorm hit Texas. Flights were cancelled, hotels were full, Ubers shut down, terminals were freezing... and when I finally reached my destination, my checked luggage didn’t.

That experience reinforced something I’ve believed for years: what you pack in your carry-on can make or break your journey. In this episode, I’m sharing exactly what I pack in my carry-on for long-haul flights... not for perfection, but for comfort, preparedness, and peace of mind when travel doesn’t go to plan.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why your carry-on matters more than your checked luggage
  • How to pack for delays, cancellations, and lost bags
  • My go-to carry-on bag setup for long-haul travel
  • What always stays with me (and what I intentionally leave out)
  • Comfort essentials that make long flights more bearable
  • The underrated items that have saved my trips more than once

This episode breaks down my real-world carry-on packing strategy for long-haul flights... especially when travelling from Australia, where multi-leg journeys and long stopovers are unavoidable.

You’ll hear why I always travel with a hard-shell suitcase plus a carry-on backpack, and why I swear by my Tildy Carryall Camera Backpack from taz + tez... a bag that works as my flight carry-on, day pack, hiking bag, and road-trip backpack.

How to Travel on a Budget Without Missing Out (Smart, Real-World Travel Tips)19 avr. 202600:25:48

Some of my most memorable travel moments didn’t come from five-star hotels or big-ticket tours. They came from wandering side streets, eating where locals eat, and realising I didn’t need to spend more to experience more.

Travelling on a budget has a reputation for being restrictive... like you’re constantly saying no, missing out, or stressing over every dollar. But in reality, when it’s done well, budget travel can be incredibly freeing. It pushes you to travel more intentionally, more creatively, and often more authentically.

In this episode of Tourist to Traveller, I’m sharing how to travel on a budget without sacrificing the magic... the exact strategies I use to stretch my money further while still having rich, unforgettable experiences.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • How to choose destinations where your money naturally goes further
  • How to find cheaper flights without obsessing over deals
  • Accommodation hacks that save money without ruining the experience
  • Simple money-saving habits that add up while travelling
  • How to stop overspending before you even leave home

Budget travel isn’t about cutting joy... it’s about spending with intention. In this episode, I break down how planning smarter (not harder) allows you to travel more often and with far less financial stress.

How to Avoid Jet Lag While Travelling: Real Tips That Actually Work29 mars 202600:23:15

Jet lag used to be the part of travel I dreaded most. Not the packing. Not the long flights. The bone-deep exhaustion that hit on arrival... the kind that steals your first few days and makes everything feel foggy, flat, and harder than it should be.

As an Aussie, long-haul travel is just part of the deal. Whether I’m landing in Athens, Casablanca or Barcelona, it’s usually after 20+ hours of flying, multiple time zones, and some very questionable sleep.

But after years of long-haul travel, I’ve worked out how to avoid jet lag almost completely... without sleeping pills, gimmicks, or losing days of my trip. In this episode, I’m sharing the real-world habits that actually work, so you can arrive tired but functional… and start enjoying your trip from Day 1.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • How to start adjusting to your destination time zone while still in the air
  • The simple in-flight habits that help reset your body clock
  • Why meal times matter more than sleep on long-haul flights
  • How to handle arrival day without crashing or losing momentum

Jet lag isn’t just about lack of sleep... it’s about timing, routine, and how quickly your body adapts to a new rhythm. In this episode, I break down the practical strategies I use on every long-haul trip to minimise jet lag and maximise energy on arrival.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why Andalusia is one of Europe’s most rewarding regions
  • The best places to visit in southern Spain (and how long to stay)

My Biggest Travel Icks (And How Not to Be That Traveller)15 mars 202600:31:06

After more than 20 years of travelling, I’ve learned that travel isn’t just about where you go. It’s about how you show up while you’re there.

I’ve experienced some truly magical moments on the road… and I’ve also been stuck next to some wildly uncomfortable travel behaviour. The kind that doesn’t ruin a trip entirely, but subtly drains the joy out of flights, airports, tours, and group adventures.

This episode of Tourist to Traveller is a candid, good-humoured look at my biggest travel icks... shared not with judgement, but with the hope that we can all travel a little more consciously, respectfully, and confidently.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • The most common airport and plane behaviours that frustrate travellers
  • Why small actions can have a big impact in shared travel spaces
  • Cultural travel habits that disrespect destinations
  • Group travel dynamics that can derail an otherwise great trip

If you’ve seen the news lately, chances are you’ve seen headlines about escalating conflict in parts of the Middle East and Europe. And when those headlines start appearing, many travellers immediately ask the same question: Should I still travel?

It’s a complicated space to navigate. Safety matters, of course. But the world is also far more nuanced than a breaking news alert or a dramatic headline.

In this episode of Tourist to Traveller, I’m sharing the process I personally used when this event impacted my travel plans, and how I recently made the decision to pivot my upcoming trip.

Because becoming a confident traveller isn’t about ignoring risk, it’s about learning how to navigate uncertainty with clarity and good judgement.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

Ultimately, this episode is about shifting the mindset from fear-based travel decisions to informed travel decisions. The Best Food I’ve Tried Around the World01 mars 202600:29:17

Some travel memories blur with time. Others stay so vivid you can almost taste them again.

For me, so many of those lasting memories are tied to food... not just what was on the plate, but where I was sitting, who I was with, and that exact moment when I took a bite and knew it was special.

In this episode, I’m sharing the most unforgettable meals I’ve eaten around the world. These aren’t fancy fine-dining experiences or viral Instagram spots. They’re the meals that made me pause and smile, the ones I still think about years later.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why food creates some of our strongest travel memories
  • The meals around the world that left a lasting impression on me
  • How simplicity often beats complexity when it comes to unforgettable food
  • Why food-led travel creates deeper, more meaningful experiences

When Travel Goes Wrong: Real Travel Fails, Hard Lessons & How to Travel Smarter08 févr. 202600:33:37

For every dreamy travel photo you see online, there’s usually a moment behind the scenes where something didn’t go to plan. A missed flight. Accommodation that looked nothing like the photos. Or that sinking feeling when you realise you’ve packed your itinerary so tightly there’s no room to actually enjoy the trip.

After more than 20 years of travelling, often squeezing bucket-list adventures into annual leave, I’ve had my fair share of travel fails. And while they were frustrating at the time, they’ve shaped the way I travel today far more than the “perfect” trips ever did.

In this episode of Tourist to Traveller, I’m getting honest about when travel goes wrong, what those moments taught me, and how you can avoid common mistakes... without overplanning, stressing yourself out, or losing the joy of travel.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why travel going wrong is more common than social media makes it look
  • My most memorable travel fails (and what I learned from each one)
  • How travel fails can actually make you a more confident traveller

In this destination deep dive, I’m unpacking what Palau is really like to travel, beyond the photos and the hype. From when to go and how to get there, to what’s actually worth your time once you arrive, this episode is designed to help you decide whether Palau belongs on your bucket list.

How to Choose the Perfect Group Tour19 janv. 202600:29:08

I’m an independent traveller at heart. I love planning my own trips and moving at my own pace. But sometimes, a group tour is honestly the smartest option, especially when time, energy, or logistics are working against you.

The problem is, not all group tours are created equal. If you’ve ever been stuck on a massive bus, rushed through highlights, or dragged from one tourist shop to another, you’ll know how quickly a trip can lose its magic.

In this episode, I’m sharing my personal process for choosing a group tour that actually enhances your experience, not one that leaves you frustrated and exhausted.
