“Cathexis” 30th-anniversary reflections

While Captain Janeway shacks up in ancient England, Chakotay has an out-of-body experience. There's been an attack on the shuttle he was riding around in with Tuvok, and while the Vulcan suffered only a concussion, all of Chakotay's bio-neural energy has been drained and he has fallen into a coma. The Doctor says he can keep him alive, but nothing more, since his brain is dead. That's when B'Elanna turns to a medicine wheel to save her old friend.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Voyager, one episode at a time. In this installment, we discuss “Cathexis,” the writers' attempt to add depth to Chakotay's Native American heritage, the twist, and, of course, that holonovel.

“Heroes and Demons” 30th-anniversary reflections

Harry Kim's disappearance draws the Voyager crew into a medieval mystery as a holodeck recreation of the Old English epic Beowulf starts converting people into energy. There's just one person on the ship who can safely venture into the holographic forest to find the young ensign: the Doctor. That trip into the unknown leads to many firsts for the man briefly called Schweitzer, and reveals a very Star Trek story.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Voyager, one episode at a time. In this installment, we discuss “Heroes and Demons,” how tapping into elements unique to the series creates a story true to the core of Star Trek, how it sets the stage for The Doctor's character, and what we think of his choice of name.

“Parallax” 30th-anniversary reflections

Caught in a galactic escape room, the newly merged Starfleet and Maquis crews must work together to find a way out while fighting with each other. Meanwhile, the Doctor experiences shrinkage and Neelix does wonderful things with vegetables. Can Voyager become one big happy family and continue making their way home or will they remain trapped inside the event horizon of a quantum singularity?

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Voyager, one episode at a time. Coda.   It's safe to say that Voyager fans generally have strong feelings about the third-season episode "Coda." Janeway/Chakotay shippers tend to embrace this episode for its tender and impassioned portrayal of the special bond between Commander Chakotay and Captain Janeway. And although "Coda" suffers from the Voyager reset-button effect (after an impressive number of Janeway death scenes!), "Coda" reveals the depth of affection that the Voyager crew share for their beloved captain. From old-fashioned resuscitation techniques to the contrasting portrayals of tenderness and suspense, hosts Suzanne Williamson, Zachary Fruhling, and Kay Shaw bare their souls about all things "Coda."   Chapters  Intro (00:00:00)  Initial Thoughts on Coda (00:01:56)  Janeway Death Scenes (00:04:28)  Chakotay's Talents (00:05:56)  Janeway's Father (00:09:17)  Comparison with Other Star Trek Episodes (00:11:40)  Chakotay's Rose (00:15:12)  Death and Meaning - Watching Your Own Funeral (00:19:29)  Coda Quotables (00:23:38)  Crew Reactions - Tuvok's Log Entry (00:25:01)  Contrasts in Coda (00:29:00)  Coda Trivia (00:31:50)  The Doctor and Euthanasia (00:36:31)  Final Thoughts (00:42:22)   Hosts  Suzanne Williamson, Zachary Fruhling, and Kay Shaw   Production  Kay Shaw (Editor) Suzanne Williamson (Producer) Zachary Fruhling (Producer) C. 192: But It Never Really Happened15 Dec 201600:47:46

Voyager Continuity.   Voyager is sometimes criticized for not having the same degree of continuity as Deep Space Nine or Enterprise. But in this episode of To The Journey, hosts Kay Shaw, Suzanne Williamson, and Zachary Fruhling discuss various examples of continuity in Voyager, from callbacks to previous episodes to continuity with the rest of the Star Trek universe. Together Kay, Suzanne, and Zachary argue that, despite all-too-frequent use of the dreaded episodic reset button, Voyager has its own unique brand of storytelling continuity that serves the development of Voyager's overall tale.   Chapters  Intro (00:00:00)  The Dreaded Voyager Reset Button (00:02:21)  The Kazon and "Shattered" (00:04:49)  Vidiians and Dr. Pel - Voyager's Reputation in the Delta Quadrant (00:12:03)  Relationships on Voyager - Continuously Going Nowhere (00:14:34)  Q Cubed - Voyager's Continuity with the Expanded Star Trek Universe (00:17:03)  "Year of Hell" - Is Voyager (Dis)-Continuity Dissatisfying? For their first assignment in the Delta Quadrant, Suzanne, Kay, and Zachary lay their Voyager cards on the table, sharing their thoughts on the things they love—and hate—about Voyager. 190: Set Course for Home10 Nov 201600:45:05

What Made Voyager a Family.

In the beginning, stranded in the middle of uncharted space was a divided crew against a slew of enemy aliens. It's a miracle Voyager got home at all, much less in seven years. But Voyager was the little ship that could, and one of the biggest reasons why was due to its crew. The transition of uniting Starfleet and Maquis crews into one had its initial hiccups (Seska and Jonas, anyone?), but eventually the people running Voyager became more than just a crew. They became a family.

In this last episode of To The Journey hosted by Charlynn Schmiedt and Tristan Riddell, they discuss everything that made Voyager a family. They parallel how real-life circumstances might have united the actors that portrayed the crew, how a family atmosphere was portrayed on the show (or in some cases, maybe not enough), and how that cemented the show's place as a unique entity in the Star Trek universe.

To all of our Trek family, we thank you for joining us for our four glorious years of talking Voyager. To The Journey! —Tristan and Char

"Author, Author" Commentary.

Just about any episode centered around The Doctor is likely to be entertaining. What's better than that? Well, what about an episode that's as entertaining as it is thought-provoking? Cue Voyager's "Author, Author," which aired in the last third of the seventh season. Motivated by the knowledge that EMH Mark I holograms like himself have been relegated to menial jobs, The Doctor has written "Photons Be Free," a holonovel that is loosely based on his experience aboard Voyager. But when the crew sees thinly-veiled exaggerations of themselves being portrayed in the program, they're not exactly happy. Join Tristan and Char in this episode of To The Journey as they break out the quills, the smoking jackets and the Netflix as they comment on the shenanigans that ensue as The Doctor fights for his intellectual property rights.

"Fury" in the Mirror Universe.

In the previous episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan set the stage for the next installment of the mirror universe series, so why not keep going? It's time for Kes' revenge!

Three years have passed between the story written in the last TTJ and this one, which means some serious shenanigans have gone down aboard the ISS Intrepid. With the balance of power always in flux in the mirror universe, who's controlling what — and whom? And meanwhile, what has Kes been doing since she fled the Intrepid? She returns, just as she promised to Tuvok and B'Elanna, but what tricks does she have up her sleeve? Tune in and find out how Char and Tristan wrap up their Voyager mirror universe.

That's right, this is the last episode that will feature the mirror universe because Char and Tristan have an important announcement: They will end their four-year tenure on To The Journey with episode 190, set for release on Nov. 10. Voyager Mirror Universe, Part 5.

In the same way that little kids will repeat an action if it makes an adult laugh, Char and Tristan are here to give the listeners what they want. And what they want is more adventures aboard the ISS Intrepid, better known as the Voyager mirror universe. Char and Tristan started creating their interpretation of the mirror Voyager crew in the Delta Quadrant back in TTJ 114, and in this fifth installment written on-the-fly, the story's focus centers on Kes and Neelix. They have both been indentured servants in exchange for being rescued by the Kazon shortly after the Intrepid found itself in the Delta Quadrant. After three years of serving the crew, Neelix thinks it's time he and Kes moved on, but Janeway doesn't think they have repaid their debt in full. What now? Tune in to this fifth installment of the Voyager mirror universe and find out.

186: All Natural Borg Birth14 Oct 201600:36:03

Origin of the Borg.

Ask a Star Trek fan about the how the Borg collective got started, and you might hear a few different theories. One is that the collective was started after V'ger joined with Decker in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Others point to stories in Star Trek literature that reveal the Borg Queen's rise to power over countless millions. But the truth is, nothing in canon states how the Borg came to be. Therefore, as promised at the end of the last show, Char and Tristan put their collective heads together and come up with their own version of how the Borg originated in this episode of To The Journey. Did their story match up to any theories of your own? Contact us at trek.fm/contact or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin) and let us know!

185: Time Traveling Neelix07 Oct 201600:38:02

Voyager as an Animated Series.

Star Trek's animated series is an often overlooked edition in the show's extensive catalogue. Yes, it was short-lived and yes, it wasn't always good, but it also made the most of telling Star Trek stories in an animated format — especially on a ridiculously low budget. But when we say that The Animated Series has an important place in Trek lore, don't take our word for it; instead, tune into Trek.fm's Saturday Morning Trek, which explores all facets of Star Trek in the 1970s.

In this episode of To the Journey, Char and Tristan ponder an animated version of Voyager. How would it be developed and distributed if it were being produced today? What sort of stories would it tell? How would animation lend itself to new things that couldn't have been done on the live action series? They think through these questions and more, so tune in and let us know what you think of the idea of an animated Voyager series.

“Caretaker” 30th-anniversary reflections

In pursuit of Maquis rebels, the starship Voyager is pulled across the galaxy and quickly becomes entangled in local affairs. Captain Kathryn Janeway and rebel leader Chakotay, whose ship was also snagged by the entity known as the Caretaker, join forces as they look for a way back to Federation space. But first they must rescue missing crew members with the help of an odd merchant and his girlfriend. Once everyone has been safely returned, Janeway is faced with a difficult decision: take her crew home and abandon a world in need or destroy the Caretaker and strand Voyager 70,000 light years from the Federation.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing bring back our dedicated Voyager podcast in honor of the 30th-anniversary and kick off a retrospective that will take you through all of the series, one episode at a time. In this installment, we discuss “Caretaker” as well as the development of the show and its premise.

"Resolutions" Commentary.

Sometimes when things in life get tough, you've got to indulge in a little bit of comfort. For Char and Tristan, that comfort is a heaping serving of Janeway and Chakotay goodness. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan indulge in "Resolutions," the episode that drove the J/C shippers wild 20 years ago...and still does. It's got the implausible romance setup of a man and a woman alone together on a planet, a bathtub, headboards, ancient legends, and of course, a primate. All the makings of a perfect love story for two people coming from vastly different backgrounds, but slowly coming together...until Tuvok and the Voyager crew come racing back to New Earth and rip them away from all that could have been. Le sigh.

Create a New Character.

With all the untapped potential Voyager had, it's not much of a surprise that "what if" speculations are a regular component of To The Journey. And guess what — this week is yet another scenario where Char and Tristan let their imaginations do the talking. This week, they add a member to the crew, describe his or her role on the ship, and explain how this character integrates with the other regulars. And before you ask, no, this isn't a "replace Seven of Nine with another character" discussion; in fact, that was already done on TTJ 135! This character is someone new who isn't replacing anybody.

But wait — aren't there plenty of people already in this large ensemble cast? Yes. Is there really a void another character could fill? Absolutely, yes. Listen and find out how Char and Tristan made their scenarios work.

Career Paths in the Future.

You're 18 years old and a fresh graduate of Zefram Cochrane High School. The whole galaxy is your oyster. What do you do with your life?

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk about the sort of life they would lead if money wasn't a factor in the workforce. While it's unfortunate that most of us don't have such a luxury in the 21st century, people in the 24th century do; in fact, one of Star Trek's biggest messages of hope is that some of our greatest problems (often connected to money) will be gone in the future. With basic life needs met and a social mentality of bettering humanity, what sort of things do Char and Tristan think they would do if they lived in the 24th century? Would factors such as education affect their attainment goals? Would their callings be the same? Listen on, find out, and ponder your own ideal self in the future.

Rewrite of "The Disease."

Love hurts, and no one on Voyager knows that better than Harry Kim. He left behind his fiancee back on Earth and he's been down on his luck since, having unsuccessfully fallen for a hologram, an ex-Borg, and the wrong Delaney sister. When he falls madly in love Derran Tal in "The Disease," it's really not a surprise that something went wrong. Not only must Harry answer to an angry Mama Bear Janeway when she finds out Harry didn't file his "I wanna make love with an alien" paperwork, but he also gets a raging case of space herpes. Poor Harry doesn't ever catch a break.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take the elements of "The Disease" they did like and transform the rest into their own episode rewrites. Does Harry still glow when they're finished with him? Listen and find out.

A Chakotay/B'Elanna Prequel.

Before finding peace at Janeway's side aboard Voyager, Chakotay was a self-described "angry warrior." A former Starfleet officer, he joined the Maquis to fight for his home planet against the Cardassians, and we unfortunately know little else. A recent listener email suggested that Char and Tristan write a pre-"Caretaker" story about the "angry warrior," so in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan do just that. They write an episode on the spot that starts with Chakotay telling a story to the senior staff during Ancestor's Eve, which takes us all back to Chakotay and B'Elanna's Maquis days. The story reveals several things, such as how Chakotay recruited B'Elanna into becoming his chief engineer about the Val Jean, but also a detail about Chakotay's life that few know. It shocked Janeway and it might shock you, so tune in and find out what it is.

"Bride of Chaotica! Commentary.

One of the most incredible parts of the convention experience is the cosplay, whether putting a costume together yourself or simply admiring the craftiness of others. With Star Trek Las Vegas still on their brains, Char and Tristan thought it was finally time they tackled a commentary of "Bride of Chaotica!" That way, they could talk about some of the incredible cosplay they saw at STLV that was inspired by this episode, and discuss which character(s) from Captain Proton they'd choose if they were dressing up. And, in the midst of Captain Janeway burying herself in the part of Queen Arachnia, Char and Tristan could justify talking incessantly about Kate Mulgrew's prowess — not that they need a reason for that, but a convenient segue doesn't hurt. So queue up this Voyager fan favorite and listen as Char and Tristan talk about why they appreciate this episode so much.

Star Trek Las Vegas.

Every year around the first weekend in August, the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is taken over with people dressed in Starfleet uniforms from every era, as well as Andorians, Klingons, Tellariates....and even Fear?! Ohh my! Star Trek Las Vegas takes the honor of being the largest Star Trek convention in the world, and this year was even bigger thanks to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original series. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan report live with guest Matt Hansen from The Nerd Party about the whirlwind time they had at Star Trek Las Vegas. They discuss what it was like when they met in person for the first time, the panels they attended, and the favorite things they experienced while at the convention. Even if you were at the convention yourself, this is an episode you don't want to miss!

"Time and Again" rewrite.

The Voyager episode "Time and Again" does not stand out by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it is forgettable — and you *can* forget about it because in the end, the events that occur in the story are reset by mucking about with time! In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan give "Time and Again" some love and think of ways they could improve the story and make it more noteworthy.

Char and Tristan will be at Star Trek Las Vegas next week! Not only will they record an episode of TTJ in person for the first time, but they will also be contestants on the Super BridgeMates panel happening at 12:30 p.m. on August 5 on the Roddenberry stage. Please join us if you will be at the convention!

Working in the Writer's Room.

From the very beginning Voyager was loaded with potential, which was sadly not used to the fullest extent onscreen. On the bright side, it left fans like Char and Tristan a plethora of untapped possibilities to explore. In fact, episode rewrites and original stories that resolve loose threads have become To the Journey staples! In this episode, Char and Tristan transport themselves to the writer's room at Paramount Studios in 1996, when Jeri Taylor was in charge of Voyager. As wunderkinds who managed to finagle their way into the writer's room, Char and Tristan have some influence in guiding the direction of the show during the third season. What sort of things do they pitch to the staff, who is likeliest to shoot them down, and just how much do they suck up to Jeri Taylor? Tune in and find out.

Tom Paris Marathon.

It's a crisp Sunday in October. The coffee's ready, the blankets are out, and Netflix is calling your name. It's time for a Voyager marathon.

Longtime To The Journey listeners know how much Char and Tristan love creating five-episode marathons. So it should come as no surprise that in this episode, they resurrect the character-based marathon series they started tens of episodes ago and create a marathon centered around their favorite Tom Paris moments. Listen on and find out if your picks made their lineups.

Writing TNG's "The Game" into Voyager.

Addiction is a powerful and potentially destructive thing. We saw just how quickly the cycle can start (and spread) in The Next Generation's "The Game," where a seemingly innocent game from Risa turned into a mind control ploy as a way of taking over the Enterprise. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take the story from "The Game" and rewrite it into the Voyager paradigm. Without a Starfleet Academy cadet and a young Ashley Judd aboard, who will save the ship? Tune in and find out.

Bryan Fuller.

When the news broke that Bryan Fuller was named the showrunner for the new Star Trek series set to debut in 2017, fan reaction was highly positive. Not only do Trek fans know of Fuller as someone who broke into Hollywood with a spec script for Deep Space Nine, but he wrote several episodes of Voyager and worked his way up to becoming a co-producer by the seventh season. Since then, Fuller has only continued to build a positive reputation as a producer with shows such as Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, and Hannibal. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss Fuller's contribution to Voyager as a writer and how those episodes might provide hints as to what we can expect from Fuller as the showrunner of the newest Trek series.

"Endgame" Commentary.

After 172 episodes over the course of seven years, Voyager finished its journey and made it home. For To The Journey, it's been three and a half years and also 172 episodes. To commemorate this milestone, Char and Tristan deemed an "Endgame" commentary as an appropriate celebration. They start out drinking tea, but promptly switch to coffee when they realize how wrong it was that they were drinking tea in the first place (that's Earl Grey's territory). Char and Tristan consider many topics during this commentary, such as the awesome prospect of how certain Voyager characters could make it on the new series set to debut in 2017. Just who do they believe really should have died in "Endgame?" Also, they discuss how the cast and crew felt as the show they worked on for seven years came to a close. And what exactly was that type of shuttlecraft, anyway? Catch this and much more in this episode of To The Journey.

Episodes that Exceeded Their Potential.

Have you ever cringed at those one-sentence episode summaries on Memory Alpha or Netflix? You are not alone. Sometimes they break down the plot so simplistically that the summary makes the episode sound boring, cliche, or downright bad. Sometimes they barely describe the plot at all. The lesson to be learned here is that one should not judge an episode based on these descriptions.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan take that lesson to heart and list their top five episodes that exceed their potential. On paper, the plots of these episodes might not sound enticing, but they shined on screen. Some that made the list are fan favorites. Others are highly overlooked. All of them excelled as episodes of Voyager.

Voyager Mirror Universe Story.

Gather around everyone, it is time for another round of Voyager story time. In this episode of To the Journey, Char and Tristan return to the Voyager Mirror Universe they created. It is a crazy world where Ensign Kim feels entitled to power as a descendant of Empress Sato, and Captain Janeway shamelessly plays with the emotions of her first officer in the name of reaching the Alpha Quadrant just a second sooner. In this chapter things get a little bit bloody. Members of the engineering team are being killed off and all signs point to Chief Engineer Torres as the culprit. Is she innocent or is she being framed? Tune in and find out what Tuvok uncovers in his investigation.

Interview with Garrett Wang.

When Voyager first began, Ensign Harry Kim was a fresh Starfleet Academy graduate with a promising future. Young and gullible, he was often labeled the "green ensign" by fans. The actor behind the character, Garrett Wang, was also young when he landed the role in his mid-twenties. Beyond that similarity, however, Harry Kim is a far cry from the man who played him.

Wang's seemingly endless supply of enthusiasm is something fans often note when they meet him at conventions. He speaks honestly about his experience working on Voyager, giving equal footing to positive and negative aspects of it during panels. He does the same in this episode of To The Journey, where for the first time in TTJ history Char and Tristan talk with a main Voyager cast member. They discuss the untapped comedic talent Voyager had among its cast, Wang's Voyager movie pitch, reprising the role of Harry Kim for Star Trek Online, and much more.

Episode Comparison.

It has been awhile since Char and Tristan have compared an episode of Voyager to another episode of a Trek series. In this episode of To The Journey, they are doing it in full force. Not only do they compare plot points of Voyager's "Coda" to The Next Generation's "Cause and Effect," but they throw TNG's "The Next Phase" into the mix as well. It is a three-for-two bargain that examines the intricacies of recurring time loops and discusses what officers should do if others mistake them for dead. We hope this will prevent listeners from entering distortions in the space-time continuum, blowing up their ships every day for 80 years and being none the wiser.

Voyager's Impact and Legacy.

As The Next Generation ended its TV run and set sail for the silver screen in 1994, The Powers That Be™ Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor announced that a new incarnation of the Star Trek franchise would debut early in the following year. The show would take place in uncharted space and feature a starship NOT named Enterprise. And, most notably, the ship would be captained by a woman.

Now, more than 20 years after the show's debut, opinions about Voyager's place in the Star Trek legacy remain mixed, just as they were when the show aired. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan examine aspects of where Voyager thrived and failed as a Star Trek series, why these things happened the way they did, and how these examples might serve as lessons for the team developing the next series set to debut in 2017.

How has Voyager influenced you? How do you feel about Voyager's legacy in the Star Trek universe? Please share your thoughts at trek.fm/contact, The Babel Conference on Facebook, or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin). We may read and discuss your thoughts on an upcoming show.

Let's skip the frills and just say it: This is the last edition of Essential Voyager. Sob!

Char and Tristan have had a blast evaluating Voyager episode by episode, season by season. Now it all comes full circle in this last installment, where they slash Voyager's final season down to the essentials in this episode of To The Journey. With this multi-part series now concluded, Char and Tristan will need a new angle for reviewing each season. You know they'll find a way just as Voyager found her way home, but will they break the Temporal Prime Directive to do it?

Top five Janeway/Seven Moments.

One of the most complicated relationships on Voyager was the constant struggle between Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine. Janeway, always in need of a reform project, almost bit off more than she could chew with the former Borg drone who struggled with her separation from the collective and forming an individual identity. The process put the two constantly at odds and was a heavy point of focus in the last half of Voyager's run. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan list their five favorite moments between the two characters, ranging from tough times to simple moments of friendship.

With over 160 episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, you could be forgiven for thinking a few can go on the ‘meh’ pile. There are also a lot of episodes that rise to the top when it comes to thinking of the best of the best. But it is almost impossible to choose just one episode from each series that is not to be missed.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Liam Smart and Suzanne Williamson attempt to whittle down each season to just ONE episode that embodies Voyager. Of course they do not agree...

Rewriting DS9's "Fascination" into Voyager.

Tristan and Char have been on a creative streak lately. Two episodes ago, they conducted a session in the writer's room and improvised an episode live during the recording. Then, they explored what Voyager might look like in the JJ-verse. For this episode, they are still feeling the creative vibes, so Char and Tristan are back in the writer's room for a rewrite of Deep Space Nine's "Fascination." In this Season Three episode, a Bajoran holiday ritual mixes with telepathy and the crew starts forming unlikely infatuations with one another. Since Voyager never got its version of this "Naked Now"/"Naked Time"-esque storytelling, Char and Tristan take the premise from "Fascination" and rework it into Voyager. Who pursues whom and do they make out? You will have to listen to the episode and find out.

Voyager in the JJ-Verse.

Star Trek loves playing with timelines. We have seen every incarnation of the franchise play with possibilities outside of what we consider "our" timeline, from Edith Keeler in the 1930s to Captain Janeway on in the 29th century. Aside from the "prime" universe and the Mirror Universe, we now have the Abramsverse. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan envision what Voyager and her crew would be like in the timeline created in the JJ Abrams-produced films. They discuss the likelihood of a Vulcan on the ship, a CGI alien as a regular cast member, the aesthetics of key areas of the ship, and much more. And yes, lens flares are still a thing in the 24th century.

Episode On the Fly.

Char and Tristan have been recording To The Journey every week for the last 3+ years. One of the things they have learned in that time is that they make a crackerjack writing team. They have also learned that they have fun thinking on their feet. In this episode of To The Journey, they do both and write an episode of Voyager on the fly. That's right — with no preparation beforehand, they hit record and develop a full-length episode live on the podcast! This go round, the story centers around Tuvok, where he puts his undercover investigative talents — and his principles as a Vulcan Starfleet officer — to the test.

Season Six Essential Voyager.

Popular opinion among Voyager fans states that the show hit its peak in seasons four and five. If that is true, then where do the last two seasons stand in comparison to Voyager's heyday? In an effort to answer that question in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan return to their Essential Voyager series. They examine each episode for its importance to the characters, Voyager's journey home, the series as a whole, and condense the season down to mandatory viewing. Listen and find out if Season Six measures up to totals from previous seasons, or if it falls short of expectations...much like a malfunctioning holographic boyfriend.

To The Journey 159: Conversation is Irrelevant03 Mar 201600:42:45

TTJ AMA 2.

Char and Tristan know that listeners love it when they get a little personal. Some of the most popular episodes of To The Journey do just that, and it's the same reason why they did a Reddit-style "Ask Me Anything" in TTJ 137. That episode received so much of a response that Char and Tristan decided to open the floodgates once again and solicit questions from Twitter, The Babel Conference, and via email. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan answer questions from listeners about art, their thoughts on the X-Files revival, who they would not want to be alone with in the Delta Flyer, and so much more. Many thanks to everyone who sent in questions!

Five-episode Janeway Marathon.

Longtime To The Journey listeners know that Char and Tristan love marathoning Voyager on a lazy Sunday afternoon. They have created marathons for all seven seasons in episodes past. Now they are tackling character-centric marathons. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan each make a list of five episodes they would marathon about Voyager's fearless leader, Captain Kathryn Janeway. She is intelligent, can be a complete badass when the time calls, and though she is compassionate, she does not suffer fools gladly. Once you have listened to Char and Tristan's picks for a Janeway marathon, chime in with your own on The Babel Conference on Facebook or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin).

Voyager Rewrite of TNG's "Captain's Holiday."

What do you do when your captain refuses to take a much-needed vacation? As a crew member, you conspire with your peers and *make* it happen. That's what the crew of the Enterprise-D did to Captain Picard, and in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan do the same to Captain Janeway. With no prior preparation, Char and Tristan craft a rewrite of TNG's "Captain's Holiday" and give it a Voyager spin. Listen on and find out what sort of shenanigans ensue when Janeway meets her Vash.

Voyager in the Dominion War.

Char and Tristan love playing "what if" and this week they have a humdinger. In this episode of To The Journey, Char, Tristan and special guest Matt Rushing ponder just what might have happened if Voyager had made it home during the Dominion War, an important storyline in Deep Space Nine. They explore the possibilities of when and how Voyager made it home, as well as how Voyager could have played a unique part in ending the war. Also -- perhaps most importantly -- what does Voyager do when the Dominion War is over and the series still has two more seasons to produce until its conclusion? Listen on to hear all of this and more.

Top Five Tom/Harry Moments.

Bromance is a beautiful thing. The Original Series had Kirk and Spock. TNG had Data and Geordi. On Deep Space Nine, it was all about Miles and Julian. On Voyager, Tom and Harry had the ultimate friendship. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan reveal their top five moments between these two friends. Did your favorite Tom and Harry moments make their lists? Listen on, find out, and let us know your favorite moments on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin) or Facebook (The Babel Conference).

One of the many, many (did we say many?) episodes of Star Trek: Voyager to feature the Borg, Season 6’s Survival Instinct focuses on members of Seven of Nine’s Unimatrix that crash landed with her on a random planet a few years prior to the events of the episode. These now ex-Borg are desperate to find a way of delinking themselves from the mini-collective they were forced to form by Seven, and now require Seven to help them undo it.

In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Liam Smart are joined by Christopher D Littlefield for a commentary on Season 6 Episode 2, Survival Instinct.

"Twisted" Commentary.

Bottle shows aren't often highly regarded among the fans as standouts since the lack of budget is often apparent in the final cut. However, the Season Two episode "Twisted" sits among Tristan's favorites. It's a bottle show, yes, but it still has enjoyable character moments. Watch along and listen as Char and Tristan lose themselves in their commentary for "Twisted," where Char pays extra attention to Robert Beltran's behavior and Tristan...wait, where did Tristan go?!

"Infinite Regress" Rewrite.

One of Char and Tristan's favorite things to do on To The Journey is rewrite an episode of Voyager that could have used some extra love. On the block this go around is "Infinite Regress", an episode that is dynamic but lacks the long-term impact of a synthetic pathogenic virus. Grab your Kadis-kot board, listen in and find out how Char and Tristan would give "Infinite Regress" a new personality (or multiple) in their rewrites of this episode from Voyager's fifth season.

Essential Voyager, Season Five.

It's time once again for Essential Voyager! In this round, Char and Tristan take on Season Five. For a season with several standouts and solid quality overall, it might have been easier to say "just watch them all" and leave it at that, but that doesn't make for good podcasting. Instead, Char and Tristan did their homework and examined each episode for essential-worthy status. Just how many episodes did they keep and how does that affect the overall percentage of Essential Voyager overall? Tune in and find out.
