How I Created a Long-Term Vision for My Career Success (A Story)28 Oct 202500:03:36

Most people think success comes from constant hustle.

It doesn't. It comes from patience mixed with smart action.

Most people chase quick wins.

I learned the real secret is patience mixed with purpose.

When you think long-term, you make better short-term decisions.

You stop chasing every shiny idea and start stacking small wins that lead to something big.

Back in 2015, I made a decision that tested every ounce of my patience.

Even though I was most qualified to teach leadership, I didn't start there.

My long-term vision was to become a one-stop shop for your career.

But to earn that, I needed to start by solving your most acute pain first…getting the job.

That meant helping people fix their search, knowing they'd leave me once they succeeded.

It was a sacrifice, but a necessary one if I wanted to serve for the long haul.

This week's lesson shares (in under 4 minutes) how I created a long-term vision for my career success.

And how you can build yours using the same approach.

If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings:

How to Beat Perfectionism and Finally Move Forward21 Oct 202500:06:00

Perfectionism is the great career stall.

Most people don't slow down because they're lazy.

They slow down because they want everything just right before they move.

Job seekers spend months polishing résumés, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles before they ever start actually searching.

Professionals over-edit reports and presentations until the opportunity passes.

They all have the same problem…waiting until it's perfect before they ship.

But progress doesn't come from polishing. It comes from acting.

This week's lesson is all about breaking free from perfectionism so you can finally make real progress.

I share how I overcame a decade of "consultant conditioning" that taught me perfection was everything and how learning to act fast and iterate changed my entire career.

If you've ever felt stuck trying to make something flawless, this one's for you.

If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings:

How Small Details Drive Career Performance (and Wealth)12 Aug 202500:08:47

You've probably heard the phrase "don't sweat the small stuff."

Well, I'm here to tell you to do the exact opposite.

If you want to perform at the highest level, if you want to grow in your role, get promoted, or become a standout in your field, you better sweat the small stuff.

Because that's where mastery lives.

This week, I'm sharing one of the most important performance lessons I can give you.

Whether I'm talking about writing emails, managing a team, speaking with clients, or building a long-term financial future, the people who succeed are the ones who obsess (productively) over the right things.

In this talk, I'll walk you through:

  • Why greatness lives in the details (with stories to prove it).
  • How top performers think differently about their craft.
  • A powerful health and wealth analogy that might just change how you approach your career.

You'll come away with a better approach for how to improve your day-to-day work and make long-term progress in your profession and finances.

Just 8:46 and one of the best mental models I've shared…

If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings:

How to Win the Job Interview for a Role That Isn't Defined12 Sep 202300:33:13

Do you realize whenever you're interviewing with a company, you'll have FAR BETTER results when you treat every interaction as if you're already a team?

What do teams do?

They work together to achieve a common goal.

From the first screening interview all the way to your salary counteroffer, you'll be amazed at what manifests when you approach it this way.

Now, sometimes, you're interviewing and you're not quite clear what the goal is. They might not be clear either.

But, you know you like each other enough to start dancing even though you don't know all the steps.

Maybe, they say, "Hey, we like your background. Don't have an open role. But, let's get together and see where it goes."

Perhaps, they say, "Come on down and interview for this role. We don't have a description, but it's general engineer-y stuff."

It could even be, "We're thinking about hiring someone to build out this area. We don't have a job description yet because it's a new position. Wanna talk?"

Whatever the scenario, I have the formula for exactly what you can do to win the day.

My formula has a bunch of stuff I want you to do and at least three things I do not want you to do…

DO NOT tell them what you've done.

DO NOT tell them what you can do.

And for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT tell them what you want.

There is a better way to get what YOU want and help the company get max value from you.

There is NO Need to Memorize Job Interview Answers05 Sep 202300:05:56

Ever have trouble remembering your job interview answers?

Actually, my real question to you is, "Why are you trying to remember your job interview answers?"

My mind is like a steel trap and I'd never consider trying to remember all the words it takes to give you a (live-show) lesson.

That's just too much stuff.

Not to mention, if I memorized it, I'd sound robotic instead of my cheery self!

There is a better way to answer questions in an interview.

It doesn't require much other than remembering a few points.

The Easiest Way to Know if a Company is Right for You | Ask This Question in Your Job Interview22 Aug 202300:16:03

I once had a client who would say to me, "But, Andy, I'm really bad at predicting the future."

She was referring to her ability to hire the right engineers for her company.

She'd say they sounded great in the interviews.

Then, she'd notice, after they were hired, they didn't really have the traits she thought they did.

This works both ways.

Job candidates don't often know what questions to ask potential employers to determine whether they company is a great fit for them.

I guess, technically speaking, asking the questions is the easy part. After all, you can just ask the ones I give you.

The challenge lies in your ability to dissect the employers' responses.

That's why, in today's lesson, I'm going to give the ultimate question to ask an employer to know (yes, know) whether it's a great fit for you.

Here's the question…

"What do you love about working here?"

That's the easy part and you don't even need to listen to the podcast to know what it is.

The gold isn't in asking the question.

It's in knowing what their responses mean—to YOU…

7 Powerful Perspectives to Transform Your Career and Life25 Jul 202300:40:15

Coming at you today with a more-powerful-than-usual talk about success.

Hard work might get you there. Might.

But, after working with and observing about a bajillion people, I've learned why some just seem to have it all and others live in a state of wonderment.

Perspective.

That one thing actually changes the way you approach, well, everything.

Perspective when it comes to gratitude has a way of providing you an overarching head start on life.

There are perspectives, however, that go along with different aspects of your career and life that can trip you up.

Hence, why I needed to cover 7 of them in today's lesson.

By simply changing your perspective in the way you look at something you can ignite a fire in yourself that wasn't there a minute ago.

Inside today's podcast, I hit reasons why you don't start new challenges or improve your skills.

I covered resources you should never forget whenever you make any decision and just how dang close you are to a person that'll change your life (even when you think you have no network).

I didn't stop there!

I went through time wasters that drag you down (they're not social media) and safety nets and more.

I hope you enjoy it. It's a doozy!

4 Resume Writing Strategies to Get More Job Interviews20 Jul 202300:24:24

Are you getting job interviews? Any?

Let me give you a hand.

In today's podcast, I teach the concepts and tactics that get recruiters and hiring officials and whomever else is reviewing your resume to WANT to speak with you.

It's not just a do-this and do-that lesson.

I go into, as I usually do, the WHYS and WHEREFORES and other important factors that most people don't think about.

Writing your resume requires sales skills, marketing skills, an advanced understanding of human psychology, and a basic understanding of biochemistry.

Okay. I might have gotten carried away there on the biochemistry thing.

But, you get the idea.

These sales and marketing skills are ones you likely don't earn a salary for, but make or break you when you're trying to get a new job and salary!

A little catch-22-ish, eh?

That's alright because you have me.

And this podcast.

How to Job Search During a Recession27 Jun 202300:12:14

We're not in a recession at the moment, but I don't like to be late to the party.

Even if we enter a recession, I don't want you to panic for a few reasons.

First, panic doesn't do anyone any good.

Second, you have me.

Third, there are always opportunities for you regardless of whether your world is zigging or zagging.

You just need the right perspective.

How you look at something has almost everything to do with what you see.

For example, here's how I process the world…

When the market goes up, people need my job searching services to max out their job opps and crank up their pay.

When the market goes down, people need my job searching services to overcome the more difficult challenges in getting hired.

When some industries zig, others zag. At any moment, some people need my "crank up your pay" services and others need my "overcome challenges" services.

I'm ALWAYS needed.

Think I'm unique? Think again.

Same goes for you.

It's all in how you choose to look at it.

Recently, Rachel, one of my beloved #BOOTCAMPERS, asked me, "Which industries do you predict are most likely to grow during this economic downturn?"

First, I clarified for her, we are not in an economic downturn.

Sure, the news people might be doing their level best to scare you. That's the thing about "the news." They only talk about the tiniest of extremes. If it bleeds, it leads. They're in business (yes, business) to make money, not be a public service that actually delivers "the news."

They package up the most sensationalized extremes to get your eyes, ears, clicks, etc. You think what you're seeing is pervasive and normal. Then you become frightened. Then you call your children and tell them to stay in the house.

Andy Sunshine is here to tell, that while you're allowed to have rough stretches, all is generally wonderful and he wants to make YOUR world a better place.

So, after I clarified that bit of economic reality for Rachel, I gave her the goods on HOW to think through which markets will thrive and HOW to think through your job search should your particular industry take a turn for the worse.

Take in this week's podcast on How to Job Search During a Recession and learn exactly how to maneuver through any employment environment.

Best Answer to "What Are You Looking for in Your Next Role?"06 Jun 202300:10:15

Can you just tell me what you want so I can eliminate you from this wonderful position because I can't satisfy your needs?

Good. Grief.

Why do employer's ask stupid questions.

Maybe, if I was going easy on them, I'd ask, "Why do employers not ask questions the right way?"

I mean, the way that'd yield the actual info they need to make a good decision about hiring you.

Have you ever been asked in an interview, "What are you looking for in your next role?"

Did that question make you sweat and break out in the heebie-jeebies?

It should have. Because it's a Yes/No question the employer is answering for themselves based on the several words that are about to come out of your mouth.

The interviewer just wants some assurance you're interested in the role.

No good can come of you answering this question in any detail or with any specifics.

At best, you're letting the interviewer know you are essentially interested in the job you're interviewing for.

At worst, you're saying something that eliminates you because it doesn't fit.

Wondering what to do? Say? As in exactly say?

Let's get to it!

Great Questions to Ask in a Job Interview to Gauge a Company's Culture30 May 202300:10:15

Ever want to dig into how a company actually operates?

As in, how they truly behave?

That'd be a good thing to do if you're job interviewing, I'd think.

You don't want to be joining a company you won't like!

First question: Do you even know what kind of culture works for you?

Let's say you do.

Can you get over your freshly-inflicted bruises that tend to shine overly-bright lights on recent issues at the expense of investigating all the other cultural traits you want?

You know what I mean…

I want to make sure they don't work me too hard. My last company did that.

You become myopic on this issue to find that, yes, in fact, this new employer of yours doesn't require you to work too hard.

Except, after you start working there, you discover they are very political, confused, generally don't have a good strategy, or high employee satisfaction.

Second and third questions conflated: Do you know WHAT questions to ask and HOW to ask them so you are actually getting evidence of their behavior?

Fourth question: And how to do this without incriminating yourself?

As in, if I ask about work like balance, they'll think I don't work hard. Etc. Etc. and Ha and ha.

Okay. I can practically hear you wiping the sweat off your eye brows.

Let's get to it and get you some questions and answers…

Is It Better to Switch Jobs or Stay at the Same Company?02 May 202300:09:29

Got asked a great question a few weeks back at Live Office Hours.

The person asked if he should stay at his company or transition every 3-4 years.

He has aspirations of being a CEO at some point in the future and was wondering whether the variety or longevity would better position him.

Have you ever wondered this?

You might be thinking, well, Andy, I just need a job. This is moot at the moment.

Or, hey, Andy, you're a mind-reader!

Well, what do I often say?

"Your trajectory matters much more than where you are at any moment in time […] any moment in time is just that. It's over in an instant."

You will eventually be faced with a scenario like this.

And, even if it's just a matter of changing jobs, you'll benefit from the philosophy, whys, wherefores, whats, and how-to-thinks in today's video clip.

Take in at your leisure so you can stay on that not-so-leisurely, skyrocket-like trajectory!

How to Change Your Tactics When Job Interviewing with an Executive24 Apr 202300:06:46

When interviewing with a senior executive, you need to be ready for different types of encounters.

Whether the interviewer asks you, "What questions do you have for me?" or "Why should be hire you?" or "How will you make us a better company?" or "Tell me how you did that project?" the good ol' storytelling tactics you typically use to explain your projects, what you do, and how you do it won't be enough.

You need to take a different approach, which, good news, I'm serving up today…

Why Personality and Aptitude Tests In Job Interviews Are Not Good Indicators of Performance17 Apr 202300:05:27

What's up with "TESTS" in job interviews? As if job interviews aren't rough enough, why, for the love of all that is holy, would employers push us job seekers over the edge with tests?

These "tests" come in all shapes and sizes.

Most of them are ridiculous, but, since I don't universally run hiring for the world, we'll need to deal with them.

(Feel free to start a petition if you want to see if you and I can completely reform hiring for all mankind.)

I know you want to know what you should do before you take one of these little buggers.

Spoiler alert: Nothing.

Don't do anything.

As in anything.

As in no thinking. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

Zero brain power dedicated to this.

That's if the employer wants you to take a personality or aptitude or "fit" test or something of that nature.

If it's a case study, by all means, knock your socks off.

That's because those are cool and good predictors for future success.

I pulled today's clip from one of the 1,478 times I was asked about "tests" during various Live Office Hours sessions.

You get my cheery thoughts on them and a little story about one of my recruitment clients who used them and the expensive dinner she bought me after she lost our bet…

Empathy: The Career Skill Nobody Taught You [The Zebra Code]06 Aug 202500:15:07

There's a career skill no one taught you in school.

It's not on your resume. It's rarely on a job description.

But it's the difference between being heard and being trusted.
Between managing and truly leading.

Empathy.

And here's the kicker…

Most people think they have it.

But very few understand what it actually is or how to build it.

Today's lesson is one of my most personal.

I'll walk you through the three types of empathy (yes, there are three), show you how to practice them, and share a story that changed how I live and love (this WILL bring a smile to your face).

If you want to deepen your relationships, earn trust faster, and elevate your career, this one's for you.

Top 5 Skills Employers Look For in 2023!10 Apr 202300:48:47

Skills. You have 'em. I know you do.

Can you demonstrate them? Do you know which ones to shine the light on?

It's important. Always. Just more important now.

Inflation is hovering around 6%.

Unemployment is roughly 3.6%.

Our US Fed is trying to manage inflation by raising interest rates.

We're trying the disinflation thing which means a slowdown in the rate of inflation even though inflation is still positive.

The last 10 times this happened, for every 2% reduction in inflation, unemployment went up 3.6%. (That's historical fact.)

It's linear-ish, so each 2% drop in inflation means 3.6% increase in unemployment.

So, let's carry a few numbers.

That means if we want to get back down to ~ 2% inflation, we might be adding 7.2% to the unemployment rate = 10.8%.

Ouch.

I bet when you opened this email you didn't think you'd be getting an econ lesson!

Don't worry.

You have me. You read my messages. You prolly watch my videos and join my live shows.

You're covered.

I'll continue to keep you updated on the skills, tips, tricks, and techniques to keep you razor sharp, employed, and getting paid well!

3 Ways to Make Your Resume More Powerful!03 Apr 202300:17:09

Does your resume say, "Hi, my name's [whatever your name is]. I'm a [whatever you are]?"

Or, does your resume say, "Hi Ms. Recruiter. This is how your company is about to change—for the better? You've been waiting for me. I'm here now."

You might be wondering, Coach, how am I supposed to say the latter if I don't know what the company wants?

To which I'd say, "You do know. You're just prolly not spending any time thinking about it. And, likely not spending any time writing that in your resume."

It's easy breezy when you know what to think, how to think, what to ask yourself, and where the answers to the questions you just asked yourself go on the resume.

You guessed it because I'm a pleaser not a teaser.

It's all in today's podcast on how to add more power to your resume!

Habits and Systems to be More Productive30 Mar 202300:38:35

I'm not sure when it happened, but somewhere between the time I was born and today the world started operating at Mach speed.

On the one hand, I'm not quite sure how I survived as a child without a cell phone, walked to the park, played with my friends, and managed to make it home alive all by myself.

Now, it's hard to be alone anywhere, without accessibility, with hundreds of thoughts racing through your head of all the things you need to do for all the people for whom you need to do them.

Oh, I haven't even gotten to the work stuff yet. Oy!

I don't think I need to keep going for you to get my drift.

Are you feeling as overwhelmed as I do? Amiright?

We have entirely too many demands on our lives.

What's worse, is most of them—at least the corporate-related ones—are ineffective if not flat out unimportant and unnecessary.

How can we manage it all? Focus on getting the right things done quicky? And, work toward the goals that really matter to us?

Well, I got a little somethin' to help you with that!

Get the Most Out of a Job You Don't Like Using This Tactic13 Feb 202300:05:45

Ever have a job you didn't like? Or were totally bored with?

Maybe you liked your job in general, but had some tasks that were mundane or uninteresting.

We've all encountered this no matter who we are.

The big difference between the people who manage and the people who don't has more to do with the way they approached the task.

I often say, "Your success has more to do with where you place your attention than your ability."

When you're faced with mundaneness, you can max out the experience or you can mail it in.

Join me today to get my take on the skill, yes, the skill, I've built to handle these situations. In fact, I use this skill to handle ALL my situations…

How to Negotiate Salary After Job Offer | Show Your Value in a Counteroffer07 Feb 202300:07:53

Here's your offer. Let's be generous. "100K," says the employer.

You're thinking whaaaa? Did I bomb the interviews, but they somehow are showing mercy by giving me an offer?

Now what?

We'll, if it's a lowball offer, you can totally crush it with my ultimate question. (Not to get sidetracked, but here's that video from a year ago. Maybe you can watch that later.)

If it's more in the ballpark-ish, but you're a little bit bruised by the fact it ain't raining dollar bills, you can make a counteroffer.

Please don't make a counteroffer by citing market pay of which there is no such thing and the employer doesn't care about. This is the equivalent of saying, "I just want more money because I do."

Please don't make a counteroffer because you're moving to a big city where everything is four times the price. The cost-of-living index means nothing more than a food label.

Please, pretty please, don't make a counteroffer by citing you deserve more because you have skills. So does everyone else. Their resumes totally say so. And no one ever lies about that stuff.

Make a counteroffer with a lucid, rational, well-thought-out argument that gets the employer's eyes off your cost and staring at your value.

Learn how today!

How Self-Awareness Shapes Every Decision You Make [The Zebra Code]05 Aug 202500:13:16

This week's a special one.

I'm going back to one of the most important lessons I've ever taught.

Self-awareness.

Not the generic, "journal your feelings" kind.

I'm talking about a powerful, real-world framework that shows you where your life is out of alignment.

Most people define self-awareness as "knowing yourself."But there are actually two types:

  1. Internal self-awareness: How well do you know who you are?
  2. External self-awareness: Do you understand how others perceive you?

Both matter. A lot.

And most people aren't nearly as accurate as they think.

That misalignment causes stress.
Bad decisions.
Unfulfilling jobs.
Relationships that drain instead of energize.

In today's lesson, I walk you through the six pillars of self-awareness.

It's THE practical way to measure whether your life, work, thoughts, goals, and habits are aligned with the person you say you want to be.

This isn't theory. It's a diagnostic.And it's going to help you course-correct in a powerful way.

If your inner and outer life feel even a little out of sync… this one's for you.

A Proven Way to Make a Successful Career Change | Case Study24 Jan 202300:34:18

Ever wonder how to change careers?

Meet Tracey.

She was at her new job in her new career for a short while when she and I connected on this. She couldn't wait to tell me about it.

Before I turn you loose on the valuable, DOZENS of lessons she shares, let me set the table for you on her challenges…

She's in the early stages of her professional life and lives in New York in the US.

She had umpteen challenges while trying to change not only jobs, but careers.

Here are just a few of her issues, for editorial purposes, I think will hit home:

Big career change: She was a performance artist and fitness trainer and wanted to support an ESG organization in an analytical capacity.

No experience in the new career: She had virtually no hands-on experience related to these types of organizations or working in the kinds of roles she was interested in pursuing.

"Wrong" education: While educated, her studies didn't align to the change she wanted to make, so she needed to quickly supplement her resume with certifications and courses.

Narrative issues: During her networking, many people told her, "I don't get your background. I'm not sure how you'll fit." So, she needed to get her storytelling in order and "feed the funnel!"

So? What did she do about it?

Listen to today's podcast as she shares exactly how she planned for and approached it, what she did, and what transpired.

All I can say is, "Tracey, your table is ready."

How to Make Your Résumé Standout in 2023!17 Jan 202300:58:40

It's January, which translates to high recruitment season. That means employers are interviewing candidates like crazy.

Even so, it's not exactly like shooting fish in a barrel if your résumé isn't up to snuff.

No matter what month or year it is, you need to put a killer résumé together to not only show potential employers the value you can contribute, but also set the best table for yourself when you get into the interview.

What do I always say?

"Whenever you set out to do something, plan to win."

Winning in this case means you're going to get the interview AND job offer.

The problem is most job candidates don't think this many moves down the pipe.

They hope for an interview.

They hope they'll do well when they get into the interview.

They don't concentrate on planting all the seeds throughout the entire interviewing process to ensure they have the most leverage when they actually receive the job offer.

Well, today, you're in luck because I've got a spectrum of goodies that cover how to make your résumé standout by putting in it exactly what employers want to know.

Because I'm so confident they want to know this, I'm certain they'll ask you about it in the interview.

That's why I'm not only going to show you what goes into the résumé as it relates to your bullet points, but also how to turn those bullets into interview stories.

I even have a case study in there for you!

Join me for today's podcast how to make your résumé stand out and interview stories shine in 2023!

Job Search Tips for the New Year30 Dec 202200:19:39

January is a great, if not the best, time to search for a new job.

It just is. Why?

Employers are filled with new hope, new budgets, new directives and a bunch of other "news."

Even if this isn't technically the start of their new fiscal year, they know it's the time of year employees take stock. They know the best employees will be mobile, so they want to hire those best employees.

They also pray their best employees don't go all mobile on them…as in create unplanned vacancies!

I've been working for 35 years as an executive in small and large companies, a business owner, executive recruiter, and career coach.

A little street cred I'd hope you'd say…

…and I'd say, every year I've worked, I watch history repeat itself as employers reflect, think, rethink, plan, and scale.

This should matter to you whether you're looking for a new job or not!

And, you should use this opportunity to position yourself advantageously.

What exactly do you need to do?

It's in today's podcast on Job Search Tips for the New Year. I give you a behind-the-scenes take on what this looks like inside organizations and the changes to make to your approach to significantly increase your odds of success!

You Have a Lot to Offer this World | Perspective is Everything23 Dec 202200:05:53

If I didn't know better, I'd think it was hardwired at birth.

…an inability to see our true impact.

…those wonderful ripples and echoes we make every minute of every day…that affect far more people than we'll ever know.

Where does this myopia come from?

Probably a lack of perspective to start and a host of other bandits constantly stealing it whenever we do get some.

I'm not entirely sure, but here's what I do know.

YOU matter more than you think you do.

No matter your age, occupation, or family life.

There are people out there who need you. They rely on you.

They need you to do whatever it is you do day in and day out.

They need you to do what you ache to do.

They need you big time.

The title of this week's podcast pretty much says it all. You have a lot to offer this world. Perspective is everything.

How to Determine How Far Back Your Resume Should Go13 Dec 202200:05:27

What does a resume do?

Answer: It gets you a job interview by MARKETING you, your background, and expertise.

Amiright?

Then, why for the love of all that is holy, would anyone tell you there's an exact number of years—10, 15, 20—an employer cares to see on your resume and the rest doesn't matter?

This is the problem with the world. Any idiot with a cell phone can turn it on and call themself a career coach.

Ahhhhhhhhh.

The exact answer is...it depends on what markets you best!

That's how you determine how far back YOUR resume should go!

Of course, there are some other tricks too otherwise I wouldn't have created this week's video for you.

Catch this week's podcast on How to Determine How Far Back Your Resume Should Go to set yourself (or at least your resume) apart!

How to Self Reflect so You Improve Your Life08 Dec 202200:05:21

I've long claimed no matter how successful you are, you'll never feel successful if you don't reflect.

Reflection is a skill. It's a tool. It's powerful in that multi-dimensional sorta way.

True reflection requires time, effort, and discipline, which usually means most people won't do it.

The great news is a little bit of reflection goes a long way. I do it daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually. And, NO, it does not require hours.

December is a great time to take stock of all the wonderful moments you've had and lessons you've learned.

Becoming more conscious of them and interpreting them with the right mindset will benefit you now and in the long run.

I reflect on nine categories when I do my annual reflection.

But, to be clear, this is NOT about looking at where your marriage is or career is or major buckets that tend to consume your life.

Reflection, to me, is about asking yourself the right questions—the ones that hurt your brain a little because they require you to stop whatever you're doing, think, and, most importantly, interpret what actually happened.

See, here's the thing. When you're in a present moment, it's impossible to know whether you're experiencing a high or low. That's only seeable when you turn around. But, when you look forward, you have the power to change that moment to whatever you want it to mean.

Check out this podcast on How to Self-Reflect so You Improve Your Life so you can start feeling better about your accomplishments!

A Story on How a Company's Culture is All Around You06 Dec 202200:07:36

It's all around you and it's difficult to make it tangible.

Although, sometimes, it does seem palpable. Maybe.

Companies think they have it and they're right.

Except most times they're not right about the one they have.

What is it?

Culture.

The word itself is meaningless.

The adjectives used to describe it are meaningful.

The behavior that reinforces it is the be-all end-all.

That is, if and only if the behavior matches the actual company culture the organization want to promote.

In The Hiring Prophecies: Psychology behind Recruiting Successful Employees, I wrote extensively about culture, how to define it, build it, promote it, and, of course, outlined the 20 most common adjectives used to describe it. Of course.

But, how is a job seeker or employee gonna notice it?

Whether it matches what they want?

The signs are everywhere.

In today's podcast, A Story on How a Company's Culture is All Around You, I share a story (well, you knew that already) about a time I worked with an organization who used a project name as a reminder.

It served as a constant cue to get the behavior they wanted—and needed—to get to where they wanted to go.

Enjoy!
