#262 - Are You Coping or Are You Healing?05 Nov 202501:10:28

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode, Matt and Paige take a deep dive into the difference between coping and healing. From self-care routines to emotional boundaries, they explore how coping can be both a bridge and a trap—necessary for survival but not meant to last forever. They share personal stories about burnout, triggers, and stress, discuss concepts like allostatic load and polyvagal theory, and offer real-world examples of when it’s time to stop managing chaos and start creating change. This conversation is a reminder that while coping helps us find peace, only change allows us to keep it.

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

Rehab is a reset, not a miracle. In this straight talk Q&A, Matt answers the questions we hear most from spouses, partners, and people heading to treatment. What actually happens day to day, how detox works, why some centers involve family and others do not, what to expect while they are inside, what to plan for after discharge, and the red flags that predict a quick return to old patterns. You will hear Matt’s 30 day inpatient experience, the lessons that stuck, why aftercare matters more than the stay, and how families can support without micromanaging or losing themselves. Clear expectations, simple next steps, and real hope tied to action.

#252 - Paige's Perspective: When “Just Stay Positive” Stops Working10 Oct 202500:14:08

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode of Paige’s Perspective, I’m breaking down the difference between toxic positivity and the power of pivoting.
We’ll talk about how social media, family, and even traditional recovery spaces sometimes weaponize positivity to silence your pain, and how serenity has been mistaken for emotional shutdown.

Then we’ll reframe it. Pivoting is about being honest and grounded — holding two truths at once: “This is hard, and I can handle it.”
You’ll hear real-life examples of what pivoting looks like in the moment, and I’ll give you a challenge to practice it this week.

This one’s for anyone who’s tired of pretending they’re okay and ready to learn what real peace actually feels like.

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode of Paige’s Perspective, Paige dives into the essential question: Are you living by your values? Drawing inspiration from a Freya India article on anxiety and values, she reflects on how self-love and self-respect aren’t given—they’re earned through action.

Paige breaks down how values like honesty, health, and personal integrity serve as an inner compass, helping us make decisions and create a life we’re proud of. She emphasizes that living by values isn’t about perfection; it’s about small, intentional steps that lead to big changes. Whether it’s teaching kids the importance of values by example or questioning societal conditioning around health, Paige reminds us that we always have the power to realign.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected, this episode will inspire you to pause and ask: Am I living by my values?

In this episode, we sit down with Sheri and Matt Salis from the Untoxicated Podcast to explore the complexities of addiction, recovery, and the profound impact these experiences have on relationships. Sheri and Matt share their journey, starting from the early years of their marriage, through the decade of Matt's active addiction, and into the challenging process of rebuilding their lives and relationship.

We dive deep into topics like natural detachment, resentment processing, and how addiction reshapes not just the addict but also their partner. Sheri opens up about the anger and resentment she carried while navigating life with an addicted partner and the turning point that led her to seek her own recovery. Matt reflects on the pain of early sobriety, the humbling process of earning back trust, and the realization that love wasn’t enough—respect and healing were just as crucial.

Together, they discuss the often-overlooked trauma that partners endure, the importance of individual growth, and why validation, empathy, and independent recovery are at the heart of healing. #159 - Paige's Perspective: The Hard Truth: No One Can Save You But You10 Jan 202500:23:45

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

It’s a week into the new year, and while resolutions are fresh on our minds, some of you may already feel yourself slipping. This is the perfect time to confront a reality that can change everything: no one is coming to save you. If you’ve been waiting for someone to fix your life, make decisions for you, or pull you out of the tough situations you’re in, it’s time to stop. The truth might feel harsh, but it’s also freeing—because the power to change your life has been in your hands all along.

In this episode, I’ll unpack why we often believe someone is supposed to save us, from cultural conditioning to the fear of independence. For some, this waiting game looks like hoping a partner will change—believing that if they just get it together, everything will fall into place. But that’s another way of handing over your power. When we pin our happiness on someone else’s actions, we give them control over our lives instead of taking responsibility for our own growth.

I’ll also challenge the myth of rock bottom and the excuses we use to avoid responsibility, while exploring how to break free from the victim mindset and start building the skills to save yourself. Along the way, I’ll share examples, practical steps, and a message of hope: you don’t have to be perfect, but you do have to take action.

Because here’s the hard truth: no one else can live your life or make your decisions for you. But that’s also the good news—you have everything you need to become your own hero. So let’s talk about how to do the damn work and reclaim your power.

#154 - Paige’s Perspective: Complaining – Are You Venting or Staying Stuck?20 Dec 202400:11:45

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode, we’re getting real about complaining—why we do it, when it’s healthy, and when it becomes a trap that keeps us stuck. Complaining isn’t the enemy; sometimes, you need to let off steam and call out the frustration. But here’s the truth: if all you’re doing is talking about the problem without taking action, you’re just spinning your wheels.

We’ll dive into:

  • The good side of complaining—how venting can clear your head and highlight what needs to change.
  • The downside—how staying in a cycle of complaints keeps you powerless, drains your energy, and blinds you to solutions.
  • The key question you need to ask yourself: “Am I releasing this, or am I living in it?”

Because complaining feels productive in the moment, but progress only happens when you’re ready to stop rocking in that chair and take a step forward.

“It’s okay to hate where you are. Just don’t plant roots there.”

Let’s talk about getting out of the complaining trap and back into action.

#251 - Why “One Day at a Time” Isn’t What You Think08 Oct 202501:10:37

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

“What if” feeds anxiety. “Even if” builds a plan. In this episode we unpack what “one day at a time” actually looks like for both spouses and people in recovery. We break down how to use it as a call to action instead of a reason to wait it out. You’ll learn how to swap future-tripping for present-focused steps, set values-based boundaries, and stack micro wins that add up to real change. We also get honest about the ways this phrase gets misused in relationships, how accountability fits in, and what “recovering separately, together” can look like when both people are doing their part. If you’ve ever wondered when “one day at a time” helps and when it keeps you stuck, this conversation brings clarity and practical next moves.

#152 - Paige's Perspective: Optimism Theatre13 Dec 202400:18:23

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode, Paige shares thoughts on Optimism Theatre—a concept Matt explored in a recent TWFO article. While he told the story from his perspective as someone in recovery, Paige focuses on why it’s so difficult for spouses and partners to set boundaries and be assertive in these relationships. I dive into how the addict’s performance of optimism—promising change, saying the right things, and creating false hope—can keep us stuck in cycles of waiting and second-guessing. Actions speak louder than words.

#147 - Stop Fexting: How Text Fights Are Ruining Your Relationship27 Nov 202401:05:18

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode of Till the Wheels Fall Off, Matt and Paige dive headfirst into the digital dumpster fire of text fighting—aka "fexting." They tackle why arguing via text rarely accomplishes anything productive, how it’s become the modern default for conflict, and why it’s often a sign of deeper communication issues.

They explore why text fights are emotionally exhausting, miscommunication-prone, and give manipulators an easy playground. Plus, they ask the big questions: Is texting making relationships worse? Are you addicted to the back-and-forth drama? And why do we think texting someone into submission will actually work?

Matt and Paige also share tips to break free from the cycle, challenge listeners to stop fexting for 24 hours, and drop some truth bombs on why face-to-face conversations build real intimacy. With humor, personal anecdotes, and a few controversial hot takes, this episode will have you rethinking your text habits—and maybe even putting down your phone.

Also on the docket: Thanksgiving food debates, ambrosia salad, and why mashed potatoes don’t belong at the holiday table.

Don’t miss this one—it’s time to text less and talk more.

#143 - Pain and the Past: How We Faced Opiates Together After Years of Sobriety13 Nov 202401:05:32

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode, we share our personal journey through Matt's recent surgery and the challenges of managing pain with opioids - his past drug of choice. This was scary, new territory for us and it's a slippery slope given the history of addiction. We discuss the emotional complexities surrounding the surgery recovery, how we planned in advance and discussed the decision to treat the pain with a dangerous substance, the accountability built into the situation, the importance of open communication, and how we navigated the fears and realities of pain management together. Opiates in an emergency setting are tricky in recovery, and we believe this conversation will be helpful and insightful for couples and individuals that are navigating difficult emotions around pain treatment in sobriety as well as those that have faced a relapse. This candid conversation highlights the significance of trust, accountability, and the growth that can come from facing difficult situations as a couple. We navigated this one successfully and we're both incredibly proud of how we faced it and we think you'll gain quite a bit from this one too if you find yourself having to go down this road.

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

Shame can keep you stuck in self-judgment or help you grow, depending on what you do with it. In this Mindset Monday, Matt talks about what shame really is, where it comes from, and how to move through it without collapsing or running from it. You’ll learn how to handle the first wave of emotion when it hits, reframe the thoughts that follow, and turn that discomfort into accountability instead of avoidance. Matt also shares how shame shows up in relationships during recovery and repair, how to stay grounded when a partner spirals, and how to face your own shame for staying, tolerating, or being connected to addiction. This episode is a practical guide to turning pain into progress and rebuilding self-respect one honest moment at a time.

#142 - Paige's Perspective: Why Self-Care is Essential for True Healing08 Nov 202400:17:13

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode of Paige's Perspective, we're diving deep into the true power of self-care—not as a luxury, but as a crucial foundation for healing and growth. Self-care isn’t about spa days or quick fixes; it's about rebuilding from within and learning to prioritize ourselves so we can face life’s challenges with clarity and strength. We’ll explore how self-care helps us understand who we are, what we need, and what we stand for. Think of it as self-maintenance, like tuning up a car or maintaining a home—it’s ongoing, it’s essential, and yes, it takes effort. But by investing in physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual self-care, we empower ourselves to set boundaries, make healthier decisions, and break out of old cycles. This episode is here to remind you: self-care is the backbone of healing, and putting yourself first isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. Let’s get excited about building the best version of ourselves. So, Wheelies, let’s get rolling!

#139 - Abby Eckel - Equal Partnerships, Marriage, & Asking for More30 Oct 202401:29:28

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode, we sit down with Abby Eckel, a powerful content creator who highlights some of the most pressing issues women face today—unequal partnerships, the mental load of motherhood, how addiction and mental health disorders give context - not excuses - she gives her opinion on whether you can train someone to change, and discusses the complexities of navigating relationships in a patriarchal society.

Together, we dive into what it means to have a truly equal partnership, why men often perceive equality as oppression, and how societal conditioning plays a role in perpetuating these dynamics. Abby shares her thoughts on weaponized incompetence, the undervaluing of women’s work, and the emotional toll placed on partners in relationships with addiction and mental health struggles.

We also explore the challenges women face when trying to enact change in their relationships, how to balance compassion with accountability, and what minimum standards of care every partnership should strive for. Abby offers candid insights on where the ‘good guys’ are, whether partners can realistically change, and how to manage frustration with people who refuse to act on their issues.

This is a thought-provoking conversation for anyone who has felt the weight of unequal expectations or struggled to communicate their needs in relationships. Join us for a deep dive into the realities of modern partnerships and what we can do to foster change.

#136 - Paige's Perspective: Anger vs. Aggression: Finding Strength Without Losing Control18 Oct 202400:13:17

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode, Paige explores the difference between anger and aggression, helping listeners understand how to express anger without letting it control them. She acknowledges that anger is a natural response to betrayal, harm, or crossed boundaries, but warns that reacting aggressively—yelling or lashing out—often shifts the focus away from the real issue and gives others an excuse to dismiss your needs.

Paige discusses how aggression can leave us feeling disconnected from our authentic selves, trapping us in guilt and shame. Instead of trying to change others with anger, she emphasizes the importance of using anger constructively: setting boundaries, communicating assertively, and taking intentional action to protect yourself. Standing up for yourself isn’t about forcing others to see your point of view; it’s about honoring your own needs, values, and worth, even if others refuse to listen.

She encourages listeners to pause before reacting, use “I” statements to stay in control of their emotions, and recognize that true power lies in how they respond—not in mirroring the chaos of addiction or manipulation. Paige reminds everyone that anger, when managed well, can become a powerful force for growth and change.

#135 - Sobriety Doesn't Fix Unequal Partnerships16 Oct 202401:28:04

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

This episode tackles the real issue behind many struggling relationships—unequal partnership. It’s not just about addiction or bad behaviors, but the mental toll of a one-sided relationship. We explore the emotional impact of carrying the mental load—chronic stress, burnout, resentment—and highlight what true equal partnership looks like: shared responsibilities, open communication, mutual involvement in home life, and respect.

We also challenge the myth that women “picked” unequal partners—society has normalized these imbalances. If you’re in an unequal partnership, it’s time to demand more. You deserve equality, respect, and a partner who shares the load.

#133 - Life Isn't Black & White - Embrace the Gray09 Oct 202401:40:20

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode of Till the Wheels Fall Off, we explore the concept of “Gray Area Thinking”—a mindset that embraces nuance, complexity, and multiple truths in life. While we dive into the challenges of rigid, black-and-white thinking, we also recognize that in some instances, black-and-white thinking is necessary. We discuss when having clear, binary thinking can provide structure, safety, and clarity, particularly in situations involving boundaries, moral decisions, or safety concerns. However, we also highlight how adopting gray area thinking in other areas of life can improve decision-making, reduce anxiety, and lead to personal growth.

We’ll share real-life examples, discuss the balance between black-and-white and gray area thinking, and provide actionable tips for shifting your mindset to embrace life’s complexities when needed. Tune in to learn how to let go of rigid judgments, find peace in the gray, and understand when clear lines can still serve you.

#249 - Paige's Perspective: You’re Not Overreacting: Why We Minimize Instead of Catastrophize03 Oct 202500:12:29

Many spouses believe they’re catastrophizing — blowing things out of proportion, imagining the worst — when in reality, they’re minimizing. In this episode of Paige’s Perspective, we explore how minimization shows up as a survival strategy, how addicted partners manipulate us into shrinking the truth, and how society reinforces it with messages like “at least he’s not hitting you” or “forgive and forget.” I’ll share real-life examples of what minimizing looks like, why we’re so afraid of facing reality, and how recognizing the truth — even when it’s scary — can set us free.

#127 - Beyond Sobriety: The Hard Truths of Recovery18 Sep 202401:34:32

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode, we dive into the hard truths of what it’s really like to be with someone in recovery. Recovery isn’t a magical reset button; it's a long, painful process filled with challenges. You can’t just “start over” once someone gets sober—years of emotional immaturity, anger, and resentment come to the surface. It's not just about substance use, but about dealing with stunted growth and the unhealthy behaviors that persist or worsen even after sobriety.

We'll tackle the complexities that partners face, from letting go of hypervigilance to managing the fear of relapse. We explore why setting boundaries is crucial, how building trust takes time, and the waves of resentment that often surface. You’ll hear about the difficulties of adjusting to an alcohol-free lifestyle, mourning the old life, and feeling isolated as your partner connects with a new sober community.

This episode is packed with real-life questions from our community, addressing the fears, challenges, and emotional realities of being with someone in early recovery. Together, we’ll discuss what it means to truly heal and how to navigate these issues as a partner. Recovery is hard—emotionally, mentally, and relationally—but it’s possible to find a path forward, even if that means walking away to protect yourself.

#125 - Understanding Addiction: A Tool for Healing or a Trap of Inaction?11 Sep 202401:03:07

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

In this episode we discuss the natural tendency to want to understand what is affecting your loved one if they struggle with addiction. Often times the journey of education is enlightening and fosters empathy and understanding, but it can also be a trap which keeps people stuck in a pattern of inaction. While understanding is important, it is not sufficient to "fix" anyone and runs the risk of keeping spouses and partners stuck in a loop of seeking to understand rather than taking action. We discuss benefits and possible dangers of over-intellectualizing addiction, we discuss separating the behaviors from the substance, and how you can take action to protect yourself and your family from an abusive situation that may cause you harm.

In this episode we discuss how to get from validation to making real changes in your life with the help of acceptance, impermanence, and the adoption of a growth mindset. So often our minds are geared toward guarantees and permanence so much so that we sacrifice the things we need for what is simply familiar. #248 - Is What They Say When They’re Drunk True?01 Oct 202501:04:04

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

You’ve probably heard the saying, “A drunk man's words are a sober man's thoughts” But is that really true? In this episode, we break down drunken honesty and get real about what alcohol does (and doesn’t) change. From the science of lowered inhibitions to the deeper beliefs and resentments that surface when the filter drops, we explore why it’s not just about what was said in the moment but about the patterns that reveal who someone really is.

Most importantly, we shift the focus away from dissecting intent and toward the impact these words and behaviors have on you. Whether they meant it or not, the harm is real and you don’t have to play detective to figure it out.

#121 - "Weaponizing" Support - When Does Asking for Support Become Manipulative?28 Aug 202401:03:33

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

Many people have experienced a situation where they are asked by someone struggling with addiction for "support." They will tug at heartstrings, elicit sympathy, ask for loyalty, and beg for support- but what are you supporting? If someone is asking for your support, but they are not making a recovery effort, is that really support? In this episode we talk about our own experience where asking for support was little more than leading someone on and asking for dismissal rather than asking for support for a genuine recovery effort. We dissect the various meanings of the phrase "I need your support" in our own past in hopes to validate many that are experiencing similar circumstances.

#120 - Paige's Perspective: People Pleasing23 Aug 202400:13:33

Have an episode suggestion? Text us!

This episode from Paige's Perspective discusses the human tendency to care about what others think and the roots of people-pleasing behaviors. Paige reflects on how historically, humans lived in small, interconnected communities where fitting in was essential for survival. This instinct to please others was ingrained as a means to avoid ostracization. However, in the modern world, with access to diverse perspectives and communities, the need to conform to one’s immediate environment is less critical. Paige encourages embracing authenticity and going against the grain, even when it feels uncomfortable or when it goes against societal norms. She emphasizes the importance of finding a community that aligns with one’s true self, rather than trying to fit into a mold that doesn’t resonate personally. Paige also touches on how this mentality can be applied in daily life, such as making healthier lifestyle choices despite societal pressures and raising children to be authentic and independent thinkers. Ultimately, she advocates for letting go of the need to please others and living a life true to one’s values, even if it means standing out or facing criticism.
