Parenting Made Simple: Evolving with Your Child, Stress-Free with Dr. Leon Levitt23 Dec 202401:06:23

Welcome to Thriving Parenting, the podcast where we explore the joys, challenges, and everything in between that comes with raising children. In this episode, I’m thrilled to sit down with Dr. Leon Levitt, a GP obstetrician with over 30 years of experience helping parents navigate the complexities of raising little ones.

Dr. Levitt is the co-director of Grantham House Medical Practice and the founder of Baby Steps Health, a multidisciplinary centre supporting babies and their families. He’s also the author of What Do I Do Now? The Basics of Parenting Babies Without Stress, a book designed to simplify parenting and help you embrace the process without the overwhelm.

Together, we unpack his philosophy on parenting with perspective, understanding your child’s developmental stages, and the importance of adjusting your parenting style as your child grows. We dive into:

  • Why parenting needs a developmental perspective.
  • The power of the pause and how it can transform your parenting responses.
  • Addressing common parenting myths, like the instinct to “fix” every cry or tantrum.
  • The importance of leading with joy and embracing the messiness of family life.
  • Practical advice for navigating early parenthood and beyond, tailored to both you and your child’s unique needs.

Dr. Levitt offers a refreshing perspective that removes the pressure to get everything “right” and instead focuses on connection, kindness, and adapting to your child’s growth.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed as a parent, this episode is filled with wisdom and practical tips to help you parent with confidence and calm.

Dr Leon Levitt is an experienced GP Obstetrician who has been professionally changing nappies, settling babies, caring for young children and guiding parents for over 30 years.

In 2015 he founded the Baby Steps Health Centre, to reduce the challenges parents face in accessing quality care for their children.

He is the author of ‘What do I do now? Click here to access your copy  The basics of parenting babies… without stress’, a book about common parental anxieties, and the overriding principles he uses in his medical practice to empower parents. Together with Dr Maria Kailis, he owns and works at Grantham House Family Medical Practice, a family friendly General Practice in Wembley.

I hope this episode resonates with you and offers the reassurance that you are doing an incredible job. Remember, don’t try to fix everything—be there, support, and find joy in the journey.

Until next time, Thrivers!

Permission to Struggle: Embracing Discomfort in Parenting’s Hardest Moments16 Dec 202400:50:35

Welcome to another episode of Thriving Parenting! Today, I’m delving into an important yet often avoided topic: Where are we avoiding discomfort in our parenting? How might this avoidance be hindering both our growth and that of our children? I cannot wait to explore this topic with you, as it’s something I encounter often in my coaching and, admittedly, in my own parenting journey.

In this episode, I share a personal story about a situation where I avoided discomfort for a while, only to face it head-on with transformative results. I’ll provide a real-life example involving one of my children and discuss common areas where we, as parents, might try to sidestep discomfort. Together, we’ll reflect on whether these avoidance patterns truly serve us—or if they prevent us and our children from thriving.

We’ll examine:

  • How avoiding discomfort might stop us from achieving the thriving life we desire for ourselves and our children.
  • Key areas where this avoidance often shows up in parenting, such as managing big emotions, setting boundaries, and allowing mistakes.
  • Practical strategies for embracing discomfort as a necessary part of growth and connection.

I also want to share a heartwarming testimonial from Andrea, a client who engaged with my Sleep Godmother program. She described her transformative experience in these words:

"Within a few days, our 15-month-old went from waking up 3–8 times a night to sleeping through or waking only once. Jen’s support was a game changer for our family."

Andrea’s story reminds me of how often discomfort arises during big changes. It’s relevant to this episode because, in helping families, I often see that transformation begins when we confront discomfort with courage and empathy.

Finally, I reflect on my recent parenting experience, where I helped my daughter transition away from thumb-sucking—a deeply ingrained habit. It required navigating her big emotions, setting firm but loving boundaries, and working through my own discomfort as a parent. The result? Watching her proudly declare, “Mum, I’m so proud of myself!”

This episode is a reminder that discomfort and growth go hand-in-hand. Whether it’s guiding our children through life’s challenges or embracing our own vulnerabilities, leaning into discomfort fosters resilience, connection, and understanding.

Thank you for tuning in! If this episode resonated with you, please take a moment to leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify—it truly helps this podcast reach more listeners. Don’t forget to share it with someone who might benefit from this message.

Until next time, Thrivers! Let’s embrace the discomfort, grow together, and keep thriving.

In this episode of Thriving Parenting podcast, I’m diving into part two of a conversation I started last week—three things I’m really glad I knew as a first-time mom that helped me navigate the early days of motherhood with a bit more ease.

In this episode, I share personal insights from my journey, reflecting on how these realizations shaped me as a mom and helped me grow through the ups and downs of parenting. From learning to trust my child’s development to finding joy through play, these are the things that gave me confidence and peace, even in the uncertainty.

Here's a quick rundown of what you’ll hear in this episode:

Key Takeaways:
  • We’re Meant to Evolve: Both you and your child are constantly growing. It’s about embracing the changes and trusting the process. I’ll share how understanding developmental milestones helped me relax and enjoy motherhood more.
  • Your Child is an Individual: Realizing early on that my child is their own person—not just a reflection of me—made all the difference. I talk about how this perspective took the pressure off and allowed me to get to know and respond to my child in a way that worked best for them.
  • Connect with Your Inner Child: Play is powerful. I share why being playful and tapping into your own inner child can make parenting more fun and help you build strong connections with your kids.

In this episode of Thriving Parenting, we delve into the emotional journey of becoming a parent for the first time. I shared three important lessons I wished I had known when I first became a mum, having now accumulated 12 years of parenting experience and reflection.

The episode explores managing anxiety as a new parent, emphasizing the necessity of trusting oneself and the parenting process. It highlights how mistakes are not just inevitable but beneficial for growth, as they foster resilience in both the parent and the child.

The episode also discusses the misconception that a baby's mood is directly linked to a mother's capabilities, encouraging parents to accept all emotions as part of their child's development. By sharing personal anecdotes and the support she received from family, the host provides insights into coping with societal pressures and self-judgment. This episode is intended to offer reassurance and perspective to first-time parents, reminding them that it's okay to let go of perfection and embrace the unpredictable nature of parenting.

Thriving with Two: Making the New Sibling Transition Easier with Gen Muir23 Sep 202400:52:22

In this episode of the Thriving Parenting Podcast, I engage in a detailed conversation with Gen, a Social Worker, parent educator, founder of Connected Parenting, Author of the new parenting bible Little People Big Feelings, Co-host of Beyond the Chaos Podcast, and Mum to four boys.

Gen shares her personal experiences of raising four boys, highlighting that the transition from one to two children is often the most challenging for parents. She explains the reasons behind this difficulty, such as the need to manage the demands of two children at different developmental stages and the potential struggles of the older child in sharing attention and resources with a newborn.

Gen also offers practical advice for parents to navigate this transition, including strategies for building connections with older children, setting and enforcing loving boundaries, and understanding the emotions behind difficult behaviors. She emphasises the importance of preparing oneself as a parent rather than focusing solely on preparing the child.

The discussion also covers how small acts of connection and empathy can significantly impact a child's adjustment to a new sibling. Gen's insights aim to reassure parents that it's okay to feel overwhelmed and stressed during this period and that through patience, empathy, and consistent connection, families can find their rhythm and thrive.

Steph shares practical strategies, including the benefits of shadow work, setting healthy boundaries, and involving self-care practices like exercise and seeking help. We also address common parenting challenges, such as balancing self-care with parenting responsibilities and overcoming societal expectations that contribute to mum guilt.

The Baby Sleep Formula: 4 Essentials Every Parent Needs to Know02 Sep 202400:36:51

In this episode of Thriving Parenting, I discussed the importance of activity, bath time, nutrition, and sunlight in promoting better sleep for babies and toddlers. Each of the four key areas is explored in detail:

I explained the importance of physical activity for children of all ages, emphasising how it helps maintain a healthy weight, build strong bones and muscles, improve balance and coordination, enhance mental and emotional well-being, and reduce the risk of injuries. I provided age-specific activity recommendations and stressed that physical movement is crucial for raising core body temperature which aids sleep.

Bath time is highlighted as a powerful tool for promoting sleep due to its ability to raise and then lower the core body temperature, signaling the body that it’s time to sleep. I also mentioned the benefits of co-regulation during bath time, such as boosting immunity and gut health and increasing stress resilience. Using Epsom salts in baths is recommended for its magnesium content, which can further improve sleep quality.

The relationship between nutrition and sleep was discussed, with a focus on the importance of maintaining a balanced diet rich in key nutrients like magnesium and iron. I debunked the myth that food before one is just for fun and emphasises the importance of introducing solids at six months to meet the baby’s nutritional needs. Foods high in tryptophan and other sleep-promoting nutrients are recommended, with practical tips for integrating them into the child’s diet.

Lastly, in this episode, I highlighted the significance of sunlight exposure for resetting the circadian rhythm and boosting serotonin levels, which convert to melatonin, the sleep hormone. Practical suggestions are offered for parents to get outside and enjoy sunlight with their children, regardless of energy levels or weather conditions.

Why Do I Feel So Stressed As A Parent?! Simple Breakdown For These Normal Feelings We ALL Have19 Aug 202400:34:37

In this episode of Thriving Parenting, I dive into the topic of understanding and managing stress, particularly for parents. I explained stress in simple terms, aiming to make the concept accessible to everyone. I highlighted the significance of recognizing stress triggers and how increased awareness can help in managing stress effectively.

The episode covers the primitive brain's role in stress responses, often referred to as the 'lizard brain', and how it's designed for survival but can become detrimental when overactive in modern day scenarios.

I explained that while some level of stress is beneficial for growth and learning, chronic stress can be harmful. Parents are encouraged to identify the root causes of their stress, which could stem from past experiences or ongoing circumstances, and work on creating new, healthier pathways to handle stress. Various practical tips are shared, including the importance of taking quiet moments, setting realistic expectations, and staying mindful to help reduce stress levels.

The episode concludes with inspirational quotes about stress, emphasizing that managing stress is about choosing how to respond to various situations. The host advocates for conscious awareness and self-care as key strategies to thrive as a parent.

Which Parenting Style Are You? Unpacking the Trends and Finding What Works12 Aug 202400:31:03

In this episode of Thriving Parenting, I dive into various parenting styles, with a special focus on understanding and mixing different approaches to create a balanced parenting experience.

The core discussion revolves around four main parenting styles—authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved—and how sub-styles like gentle, attachment, and mindful parenting can fit within these categories.

I highlighted the authoritative style as the most recommended due to its balance of security and support and identified the three essential needs children have: love, safety, and being seen and heard.

A key takeaway is the encouragement for parents to adapt and blend various styles to suit their unique situations, rather than rigidly following one method.

In this episode, I also addressed common fears parents face regarding their child's emotions and offered practical advice on how to navigate these challenges. A client case study is shared to illustrate the flexibility and personalization required in effective parenting, demonstrating how tailored support can help overcome the limitations and demands of a single parenting style.

How to Transform Your Parenting Style with a Simple Pause22 Jul 202400:30:54

In this episode of Thriving Parent-ing, I introduced the power of the 'Pause,' a transformative parenting tool aimed at improving how parents react to their children's behaviors and emotions.

The episode unpacked how taking a moment to pause rather than reacting impulsively can lead to more effective and compassionate parenting. I discussed the concept using various real-life examples, such as observing a child's exploration at the park and managing their discomforting behaviors like tantrums or crying. By advocating for mindfulness in parenting. the episode also underscores the importance of understanding both the parent's and the child's emotional triggers and reactions.

I also shared a touching story about my client learning to pause before responding to her baby's cries, demonstrating how this practice can even improve sleep patterns. With an emphasis on self-reflection, intentional responses, and building emotional regulation. This episode offers practical advice for parents looking to cultivate deeper connections and more peaceful interactions with their children.

Catnapping Dilemma: What to Do When Your Baby’s Naps are Short15 Jul 202400:40:59

In this episode of Thriving Parent-ing, I explored the concept of 'catnapping' in babies, which refers to shorter naps usually lasting one sleep cycle of about 45-50 minutes.

The discussion includes whether parents should be concerned about catnapping and various strategies to potentially extend their baby's naps. I explained the development of baby sleep cycles, from the early weeks to around six months, and how changes in sleep patterns can affect nap duration. Key topics include creating a sleep-friendly environment, understanding and interpreting baby's tired signs, and the pros and cons of using resettling techniques. Practical tips such as darkening the room, using white noise, ensuring the baby is well-fed, and gradually extending awake times are provided.

Achieving Emotional Balance in Parenting: Key Signs & Solutions (Part 2)01 Jul 202400:26:53

In this second part of the previous episode, I delve into actionable steps parents can take to prevent their children's emotions from defining their parenting.

The episode begins by encouraging parents to reflect on their feelings, sharing practical ways to explore why certain child behaviors trigger deep emotional responses. Crying is highlighted as a common trigger, with suggestions for journaling to uncover underlying beliefs.

The importance of setting clear, loving boundaries to create a secure environment for children is underscored, alongside advocating for the significance of self-care to maintain energy and patience in parenting. Seeking support from therapists or trusted friends, educating oneself about child development, and developing coping strategies such as mindfulness and deep breathing are also emphasized.

I advocate for encouraging emotional expression in children by guiding them to manage emotions appropriately, and maintaining open, honest communication to help children feel heard and validated. Positive reinforcement for good behavior and the value of joining supportive parenting groups are discussed, as well as strategies for dealing with societal judgment.

This episode wraps up with reflections on moving forward with empathy, understanding, and balanced emotional management, aimed at fostering healthier interactions and a nurturing environment for both parents and children.

Achieving Emotional Balance in Parenting: Key Signs & Solutions (Part 1)24 Jun 202400:34:45

In this episode of Thriving Parent-ing, I discuss eight critical signs that parents may be letting their children's emotions define their parenting abilities. I provided a compassionate approach, encouraging parents to allow themselves to feel and process these emotions.

The episode covers the following signs: taking emotional reactions personally, creating inconsistent boundaries, overcompensating for the child's emotions, avoiding conflict, experiencing excessive guilt, constantly seeking validation, neglecting self-care, and becoming emotionally enmeshed with the child.

I personally have anecdotes and professional insights gathered from 12 years of parenting three children, emphasizing that these challenges are normal and that parents are not alone. Practical steps and reflections were shared to help parents recognize these patterns and start working through them.

Taking care of our emotional wellbeing is one of the best things we can do for our kids. Parenting can bring up a lot of emotions, some of which we can understand and others that may require additional support. If this podcast content has brought up challenging or distressing feelings, consider speaking with your GP about a referral to a psychologist or exploring alternative therapy options for extra support.

How to Transform Your Parenting with Shadow Work w/ Caitlin Hosking17 Jun 202401:06:35

In this enlightening and comprehensive episode of Thriving Parenting, I sat down with Caitlin Hosking, a renowned shadow work coach and trainer. Caitlin shares her expertise on shadow work, a practice that involves diving deep into the hidden parts of ourselves formed by societal conditioning and personal experiences. We discussed how these hidden 'shadows' can impact our behavior, particularly in parenting, and how recognizing and addressing them can lead to profound personal transformation.

Caitlin explains the concept of conditioning by drawing parallels with dog training, illustrating how societal norms shape our perceptions of good and bad behavior from a young age. This conditioning can create internal fractures affecting self-esteem and self-worth, leading to behaviors like procrastination and people-pleasing. Moreover, Caitlin unpacked the concept of people-pleasing, explaining how it often stems from an inability to set boundaries and the fear of being judged or disliked. She provides a detailed explanation of how shadow work can help identify and address these deep-seated fears, allowing for healthier boundary-setting and emotional regulation.

This episode also covers the societal stigmatization of emotional expression, particularly anger, and how this repression can lead to explosive outbursts. Caitlin offers practical advice on healthy anger release techniques and emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence in parenting. Personal stories and reflections further illustrate the transformative power of shadow work, highlighting the importance of self-awareness, self-compassion, and personal responsibility.

Championing Parenting: The Middle Ground Movement03 Jun 202400:21:49

In this episode, my discussion centres on the Middle Ground Parenting Movement, which encourages parents to balance their needs with their children's, offering flexible and personalised approaches to parenting and baby sleep.

I address the challenges parents face, such as societal pressure and the dichotomy between constant physical contact and cry-based sleep training methods. The aim is to empower parents to explore a variety of co-regulation tools and approaches, highlighting the significance of self-awareness, perspective, and flexibility in parenting.

Through practical examples and personal insights, the episode advocates for the rejection of perfectionism, promoting self-care, and the prioritisation of parental well-being as essential for fostering resilient and securely attached children.

The Hidden Reasons Behind Rocking or Feeding Your Baby or Toddler to Sleep: Awareness Starts Here02 Dec 202400:42:54

Today, we’re diving deep into a topic that many parents grapple with: why we might still be rocking or feeding our older babies and toddlers to sleep, even now that they’re beyond the newborn stage. Let me just say this upfront: this is a non-judgmental space. No guilt, no shame—just exploration, awareness, and empowerment.

If you know me or follow me online, you know I’m all about minimising stress in parenting. My ultimate goal is to help you thrive—whatever that looks like for you. Parenting is not one-size-fits-all, and your emotional well-being matters just as much as your child’s. Stress impacts the quality of your parenting, and what works for you is just as important as what works for your child.

This episode is all about bringing awareness to why we do what we do during sleep time and giving ourselves the grace to ask, “Does this still align with me? Does this still feel good?” Because, as we know, nothing changes if nothing changes. Once we’re aware of why we’re doing something, we have the power to decide: do we want to continue, or is it time to pivot?

Here’s what we’ll unpack in today’s conversation:

  1. Choice vs. Habit: Are we rocking or feeding to sleep because it aligns with our values, or is it something we feel “stuck” doing out of habit or fear?
  2. Knowledge Gaps: Understanding how self-soothing and natural sleep processes evolve in babies and toddlers, and how we can nurture this growth while staying responsive.
  3. Parenting Mindset: Recognising if control, fear, or societal pressure is playing a role in our sleep routines—and how to break free of those cycles.
  4. The Role of Support: Why a lack of support, whether from a partner, community, or resources, can make these routines feel like the only option.
  5. Empowerment Through Awareness: How to read your child’s cues more clearly, trust yourself as a parent, and step into a confident, balanced approach to sleep.

If today’s episode resonated with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Share your insights or questions with me, and let’s keep this conversation going. Until next time, Thrivers—keep growing, keep thriving, and know that you’re doing an amazing job. 🌟

Raising Children Together: The Impact of a Supportive Village27 May 202400:21:46

This episode dives into the well-known adage "It takes a village to raise a child", exploring its relevance and application in contemporary Western society. I shared personal experiences of initially resisting assistance in parenting, reflecting a common societal mindset that equates accepting help with inadequacy. Through recounting moments of realisation and change, the discussion highlights the importance of allowing others to contribute to child-rearing, not only for the parent's benefit but also for the child's development of secure attachments with multiple caregivers and family members.

In this episode, emphasis is placed on the need for a collective approach to parenting, encouraging listeners to open their parenting "village" to include partners, family members, and wider community connections. The episode aims to shift the perception that parenting should be a solitary journey, instead advocating for a more inclusive, supportive, and interconnected approach to raising children.

Your Window of Tolerance: The Key to Thriving in Parenthood20 May 202400:33:53

In this episode of Thriving Parenting, I explore the concept of the window of tolerance, originally coined by Dr. Dan Siegel, explaining it as the optimal state of arousal where individuals can best support their mental health, well-being, and emotional regulation.

The discussion covers the impacts of being outside this window, in either a hyper or hypo-aroused state, and their effects on parenting. I shared personal examples and emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, mindfulness, and self-care in expanding one's window of tolerance to better manage parenting stressors and challenges. Strategies such as mindfulness, proper nutrition, exercise, and sleep are highlighted as ways to maintain and widen the window of tolerance, alongside an exploration of self-care techniques tailored for hyper and hypo-arousal states.

Is your Baby’s Sleep Regressing? Help for Tired Mums (and Dads!)13 May 202400:50:39

For this week's episode, I dived deep into the topic of sleep regressions, addressing common parental concerns such as its impact and management strategies.  Sleep regressions as natural developmental milestones that can disrupt a child’s sleeping patterns, arguing against the notion that such regressions are a negative phenomenon. Instead, I promote understanding and positive management of these periods.

Also, I emphasize that sleep regressions are a sign of healthy growth and advise parents on how to support you child through these times without creating dependency or stress. The discussion covers the impact of a child’s sleep history, temperament, and the parenting approach on experiencing sleep regressions. Various age-related regressions are explored, including the notable ones at four months, highlighting the permanent changes in sleep patterns, and offering practical advice on adapting to these changes. This episode stresses the importance of staying informed, maintaining consistency, and leveraging various tools and techniques to support both the child and parent through sleep challenges.

7 Reasons Why Parenting Will Challenge You and a Mindset to Overcome Them06 May 202400:31:16

Here's why embracing the inevitable bumps on the road to better parenting can actually be a good thing.

In this episode, I discussed seven reasons why parenting can be challenging. I also explored how these challenges can be a learning curve, filled with emotional ups and downs. But fear not! I also shared some great tips for navigating these early days. Leaning on your partner, family, and friends – your "village" of support – is key.

I emphasized the importance of self-care (because a well-rested parent is a happy parent!), and letting go of rigid routines in favor of adapting to your baby's needs.

Remember, trusting your gut instincts and having a toolbox of responses for your little one is crucial. Additionally, I discussed the importance of setting healthy boundaries, even if it means your little one gets frustrated sometimes. It's all part of raising happy, well-adjusted humans!

A Growth vs a Fixed Mindset In Parenting – How To Overcome Challenges And Boost Your Parenting ability25 Mar 202400:27:25

In today’s episode we are talking all about mindset, which is one of my favourite areas to talk about because it is such a powerful tool when it comes to our quality and fulfilment in life.

Carol Dweck, a professor of psychology, identified that people tend to fall into two categories when it comes to mindset – a fixed mindset, where people believe their abilities and intelligence cannot be changed, and a growth mindset, where people believe they can develop and improve through effort, learning and perseverance.

In this episode, I’ll be exploring how these opposing mindsets manifest when it comes to parenting, and the power that having a growth mindset has when it comes to overcoming challenges and obstacles, responding to criticism, handling stress and responding to the success of others.

I’ll also be exploring where our mindsets are established, how we can nurture a growth mindset when it comes to our parenting, and how this can boost your parenting ability.

The Shared Motherhood Experience and A Hysterectomy at 37 with Rachel Lee.25 Nov 202401:06:58

Welcome Thrivers! I’m so excited to bring you another guest episode of Thriving Parenting. Today, I’m joined by the incredible Rachel Lee, an award-winning photographer, mom of three boys, and a passionate advocate for embracing the full spectrum of motherhood—the beautiful, challenging, and everything in between.

In this episode, Rachel and I dive into her deeply personal journey of motherhood, beginning with the struggles she faced as a first-time mom. She shares how a traumatic birth, sleep deprivation, and breastfeeding challenges made her question whether she was cut out for parenting. Over time, Rachel reframed her mindset, learning to embrace the ups and downs of motherhood and finding joy in the process.

Rachel also opens up about her decision to expand her family, her approach to navigating hard seasons, and how her perspective shifted with each child. She candidly discusses her experience with overwhelming health challenges and her transformative decision to undergo a hysterectomy—a choice that profoundly improved her quality of life and parenting journey.

We also talk about Rachel’s powerful passion project, The Colors of Motherhood. This photography series captures the raw, unspoken realities of motherhood and pairs them with stories from moms of diverse backgrounds. Rachel shares how this project helps validate the hard emotions of motherhood, fosters connection, and gives voice to feelings often left unspoken.

Throughout this episode, Rachel and I reflect on how motherhood reshapes our identities, teaches us about resilience, and challenges us to seek support and let go of perfectionism.

In This Episode, We Cover:

  • The emotional rollercoaster of becoming a first-time mom
  • Reframing challenges and embracing the seasons of motherhood
  • How each child brings a unique experience and healing
  • Rachel’s journey through chronic health struggles and the decision to have a hysterectomy
  • The inspiration and stories behind The Colors of Motherhood project
  • Practical self-care tips for busy moms (yes, including how a keep-cup can be life-changing!)
  • Why asking for help is an act of courage, not failure

About Rachel Lee:

Rachel Lee is a mum of 3 zestful boys, who are 8, 6 and 3 who teach her how to enjoy the moment, even when it’s full body tackles. Her motherhood experiences have been both joyful and challenging and through parenting her boys, she has discovered more about herself than she ever expected. She is also the creative force, founder and photographer behind Scribbly Gum Photography. She is an International award-winning photographer, and most recently, also received the Illawarra Women in Business award for Outstanding Customer Service.

Rachel has a deep passion for capturing the essence of motherhood in all it’s forms - motherhood is more than the beautiful moments of love and connection. She has created a Colours of Motherhood Magazine. This is a collection of stories from a diverse group of mums, who have each shared a challenge they have faced in motherhood. Rachel has created an image to represent the feelings each mum faced when navigating their challenge. She created this magazine to try and start to change the narrative of experiencing challenges in motherhood as common, and not have it being equated to personal failings. She hopes that mums reading it will see that they are not alone in their feelings and experiences.

Rachel is also a volunteer photographer for Heartfelt, an organisation that provides photography services for families who have experienced stillbirths, premature births or have children with terminal illnesses. For these families, photography can be an important part of their healing process. Rachel has also supported and trained newer photographers starting their volunteer journey with Heartfelt.

Why Having Self-Soothing As Your Baby’s Sleep Goal Is Your Parenting Nemesis, and What To Focus On Instead25 Mar 202400:27:40

Welcome Thrivers, to the first episode of Thriving Parent-ing! I’m so glad you’re here!

Today I am talking about self-soothing, why I believe that having it as your baby’s ultimate sleep goal is actually your parenting nemesis, and what to focus on instead.

By reframing this focus point, you can shift your perspective and feel more secure and confident in your parenting.

I’ll be breaking down what self-soothing and self-regulation are, the ages at which these tend to develop (whilst remembering that all our babies are unique!) and I’ll be talking about the small steps and building blocks you can be shifting your focus to instead.

It's these 1-2% changes you can start implementing right now that will ultimately make the biggest difference, because they’ll help to foster trust, safety and confidence around sleep.

By taking the pressure off yourself and your parenting, you can sit in the more comfortable place of developing your confidence and skills, rather than focusing on that end goal. So if you’ve been feeling like you’re failing, or like your goal of getting your baby to self-soothe is out of reach, this is the episode for you.

Parenting from the Inside Out: Overcoming Barriers to Raising Emotionally Intelligent Kids11 Nov 202401:13:45

Welcome to another insightful episode of Thriving Parenting! Today, we’re thrilled to have Dr. Bianca Mastromano, a clinical perinatal psychologist, joining us to talk all things parenting and emotional development. Dr. Bianca, also a mother of two, brings a unique perspective shaped by her extensive experience in clinical and forensic psychology. She shares her journey from studying forensic psychology to her current passion: supporting parents through the early stages of parenthood and helping them nurture their children’s emotional wellbeing.

What Bianca is sharing today is intended to be educational in nature and not to replace individualised assessment or treatment of mental health concerns. Bianca encourages anyone needing individualised support to speak with their GP so that they can access whatever support they may need.

In this episode, we explore:

  • The Importance of Emotional Development
  • Dr. Bianca explains how children, from babyhood to toddlerhood, undergo key emotional development stages. She highlights the importance of recognising nonverbal cues, like mirroring our child’s emotions, to foster connection and resilience.
  • Balancing Boundaries and Emotions
  • We dive into the delicate balance of setting boundaries while supporting our child’s emotional expression. Dr. Bianca assures us that children need safe spaces for big feelings and provides insights on holding boundaries without suppressing emotions.
  • Managing Societal Pressures
  • From societal expectations to social media standards, today’s parents are often bombarded with the notion of raising the “perfect” child. Dr. Bianca shares practical tips on tuning out external pressures and nurturing our parenting intuition.
  • Emotion Coaching Explained
  • Learn about the concept of emotion coaching—identifying, validating, and connecting with your child’s emotions. Dr. Bianca emphasises that it’s not about getting it perfect every time but about showing up with empathy and understanding.
  • Rupture and Repair
  • Dr. Bianca reassures us that it’s okay if we don’t always get it right. The idea of “rupture and repair” is key: even if we lose our cool, it’s possible to reconnect and strengthen our relationship with our child through repair.
  • Embracing Our Own Parenting Journeys
  • Throughout the episode, we discuss the importance of self-compassion in parenting. Dr. Bianca encourages parents to reflect on their own childhood experiences and let go of unhelpful patterns, helping us create a nurturing environment for ourselves and our children.

You can find Dr. Bianca Mastromano on Instagram @drbiancamastromano or on her website at drbiancamastromano.com.au, where she shares valuable resources and insights for parents.

Tune in for this heartfelt episode that encourages us to embrace the beauty of imperfect parenting!

The Power of Connection in Parenting: How 10 Minutes Can Transform Your Child's Behavior04 Nov 202400:38:30

Welcome back to Thriving Parenting! In this episode, I dive into a topic close to every parent’s heart – the power of connection. Through a personal journey, I share how embracing small moments of connection shifted my parenting approach and made a tangible difference in my relationship with my children.

Key Takeaways:
  1. The Weight of the Invisible Load: Parenting comes with an immense invisible load that can feel overwhelming. As parents, we juggle endless responsibilities, from providing nutritious meals to ensuring developmental milestones are met. I unpack how this invisible “backpack” often distracts us from meaningful connection with our kids.
  2. Mini Moments of Connection: Connection doesn’t have to mean hours of focused time. Small pockets of connection – even just 10 minutes – can fill our children’s need for attention and nurture a happier relationship. I discuss how these brief, intentional moments create a sense of security for both parent and child, making day-to-day parenting smoother and less reactive.
  3. Fulfilling Our Own Needs: Parenthood isn’t just about being there for our children; it’s about ensuring we, as parents, have our needs met too. I share personal insights on the importance of self-care, whether it’s through movement, a brief moment alone, or setting boundaries that allow us to recharge and show up better for our children.
  4. Connection as a Parenting Strategy: So often, we focus on strategies to manage behaviour without addressing the foundational need for connection. In this episode, I explain how building a “connection loop” enables us to hold boundaries with ease and navigate parenting challenges with more empathy and resilience.
  5. Bringing Self-Compassion into Parenting: Parenting is tough, especially in today’s world where “the village” is often absent. I encourage listeners to offer themselves the same compassion they show to their children. You are doing a fantastic job, and your child is lucky to have you.

The Will for Change: How Small Shifts Can Transform Your Parenting Journey28 Oct 202400:41:38

Welcome to another episode of Thriving Parenting! Today, we’re diving into something profound yet often overlooked: the will for change. Change is hard, especially in parenting, where our instinct to protect and sacrifice can sometimes overshadow our own needs.

In this episode, I explore why finding the will to change is essential, especially when it comes to sleep and overall well-being. As parents, we’d do anything for our children, even depriving ourselves of sleep and comfort to keep them secure. But that intense protective instinct can sometimes hinder logical thinking, especially in those challenging sleep-deprived moments.

We look at how to manage our protective instincts so that they benefit both us and our kids. By understanding the “will” behind why we need to change, like needing more rest or wanting more energy to enjoy life beyond just parenting, we unlock healthier habits that support our children’s growth—and our own peace of mind.

Throughout this episode, I share personal insights, client stories, and practical motivations for change. We talk about how something as simple as wanting to reconnect with your partner or having energy to pursue personal goals can be a powerful motivator. Change isn’t easy, but finding your will can make it possible.

Key Topics Discussed:
  • Parenting Instinct vs. Logical Thinking: Understanding when instinct can take over and how to bring balance for the well-being of both parent and child.
  • Benefits of Change in Sleep Routines: How addressing sleep habits can lead to more personal freedom, connection with partners, and overall family happiness.
  • Motivators for Parents: From reclaiming personal time to feeling energized enough to exercise or socialise, discover what might motivate you to embrace change.
  • Coping with Sleep Deprivation Positively: Avoiding the trap of letting exhaustion become an identity and finding healthy ways to manage challenges.
  • Empowering Yourself for Better Parenting: Realising your own worth, your needs, and how small changes can bring significant rewards for the whole family.

Stressed Out? Why It’s Blocking Your Ability to Truly Know Your Baby Best10 Mar 202500:40:41

Welcome to another episode of Thriving Parenting! Today, we're diving into a critical yet often overlooked challenge in parenting—stress and how it affects your ability to truly connect and attune to your baby’s needs.

Parenting is overwhelming, and stress is inevitable. But what happens when stress takes over? It clouds our judgment, pushes us into survival mode, and makes it nearly impossible to attune to the subtle cues our baby gives us. In this episode, we unpack:

  • What attunement really means and why it's the key to understanding your baby beyond their basic needs
  • How stress literally rewires your brain, shutting down logical thinking and problem-solving
  • The hidden sources of parenting stress—from sleep deprivation and emotional overload to the mental load of managing a household
  • How to break the stress cycle, regulate your emotions, and create an environment where both you and your baby thrive

The truth? You know your baby best—but only when you have the capacity to tune in. And that starts with reducing stress, tuning into your own needs, and trusting yourself.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed, constantly second-guessing your parenting, or simply running on empty, this episode is for you.

Want more support? I offer free sleep clarity sessions to help parents navigate stress, sleep, and connection-based changes. Reach out to see how we can work together!

The Perfectionism Trap: How to Stop Feeling Like a ‘Bad Parent’ When Things Go Wrong03 Mar 202500:33:19

Welcome back, Thrivers! In this episode, we're tackling a topic that so many parents struggle with—perfectionism in parenting. If you've ever felt like you're failing because things didn’t go as planned, this one’s for you.

I get it. I’ve been there. Whether it’s worrying about sleep routines, questioning if we’ve “ruined” everything by comforting our child a certain way, or feeling like we need to get it all right, perfectionism sneaks up on us in ways we don’t even realise. But the truth is, parenting isn’t meant to be perfect—it’s meant to be human.

In this episode, I dive into:

  • How perfectionism shows up in parenting (and why we don’t even realise it).
  • The hidden pressure we put on ourselves to control the uncontrollable.
  • Why comparison (especially with other parents) fuels our self-doubt.
  • How to shift from control to connection and let go of the guilt.
  • Practical ways to pause, reset, and remind ourselves that we are enough.

Parenting is messy. It’s unpredictable. And that’s okay. If you’ve ever felt like you’re falling short, this episode is your reminder that you are doing better than you think.

Sophy and Kai’s Story: Finding Sleep and Support That Transformed Their Family30 Dec 202401:00:33

Happy New Year, Thrivers! 🎉

In this special episode of Thriving Parenting, I sit down with Sophy, a previous client who embarked on the Sleep Godmother Program when her son, Kai, was just five months old. Now at 10 months, Sophy reflects on her experience, sharing the ups, the downs, and the invaluable lessons she gained along the way.

Sophy opens up about the challenges of contact napping, the feelings of uncertainty, and how trusting herself and Kai transformed their sleep journey. Together, we explore the realities of seeking change, the discomforts of stepping out of old habits, and the ultimate reward of a more confident and connected parenting experience.

Key Highlights:
  • Sophy's Background: Moving from Melbourne to sunny Queensland without family support and navigating life as a first-time mum.
  • The Turning Point: Why Sophy reached out for sleep support and how a family recommendation led her to the Sleep Godmother Program.
  • The Process: Insights into the three-week tailored support program, including daily logs, text support, and regular coaching calls.
  • Breakthrough Moments: Learning to trust Kai’s cues, let go of control, and embrace a holistic approach to sleep, including the impact of nutrition and physical activity.
  • The Result: A transformed relationship with sleep that brought independence, confidence, and trust for both mum and baby.
  • Sophy's Advice: “This too shall pass.” Her reflections on surrendering to the process and recognising that every family’s journey is unique.

This heartfelt conversation is a must-listen for any parent navigating the challenges of sleep, seeking support, or simply needing a reminder that they’re not alone. Sophy’s story is a testament to the power of trust, patience, and letting go of self-imposed pressure.

About Sophy:

Sophy, originally from Melbourne, now calls sunny Queensland home. She moved there with her husband four years ago and is a proud mum to her 10-month-old son, Kai.

When consistent contact napping became unsustainable, Sophy turned to Jen's signature Sleep Godmother Program https://sleepthrivegrow.squarespace.com/sleep-godmother-program. This three-week journey offered one-on-one sleep coaching and parent mentoring, providing the support she needed to create positive change.

In this episode, Sophy reflects on her experience, sharing the highs and lows of her sleep support journey. Five months on, she discusses the transformation she’s witnessed, offering reassurance and inspiration to other mums who feel overwhelmed or scared to take the next step toward change.

3 Baby Sleep Quick Win Areas That Make it all Feel Easier (No Extra Effort Required!)24 Feb 202500:39:29

Welcome to the 51st episode of Thriving Parenting. I’m truly grateful to be part of your journey and to share the parenting wisdom I’ve gathered over nearly 13 years. In today’s episode, I’m diving into three quick win areas that can dramatically improve your baby’s sleep with minimal extra effort. These areas are:

1. Sleep Environment

I’ve found that setting up the right sleep environment is an absolute game changer. I chat about how darkening your baby’s room—even just about 80% during day sleeps—can help them transition through their sleep cycles more easily.

2. Sleep Pressure

The natural biological drive that tells our little ones it’s time to sleep. I share insights from my free sleep cheat guide, which gives average awake times as a guide to help avoid having either overtired or under-tired babies.

3. Hunger

It might sound simple, but ensuring your baby is well fed is a crucial part of the sleep equation. I discuss how distracted feeding can lead to reduced calorie intake during the day, which might then lead to more frequent wake-ups at night.

I also share some very personal moments from my parenting journey. From recording my son’s transitioning voice to delicately helping my daughter let go of her treasured teddies, I reveal the bittersweet realities of watching our children grow. It’s a reminder that even on the tough days, every little win adds up, and we’re all just doing our best to thrive as a family.

“Children do not experience our intentions, no matter how heartfelt. Instead, they experience our tone, behaviour, and actions.”

A less stressed parent is truly the best parent, and by making these small changes, we can all feel a bit more at ease.

Every Cry Makes You Question If You’re Doing It Wrong? Let’s Rewrite That Story Together17 Feb 202500:27:03

Welcome to the 50th episode of Thriving Parenting! First off, a huge thank you for being part of this journey. Releasing this podcast was once a fear, but now, it’s something I look forward to every week—connecting, supporting, and helping you embrace a thriving life in parenting.

To celebrate this milestone, I have a FREE masterclass for you! It’s all about understanding and responding to your baby’s cries, helping you become their emotional coach during sleep changes. Visit my new website, https://sleepthrivegrow.com.

Crying. It’s something all parents struggle with, and yet, society has conditioned us to fear it. We’re told a “good” baby is a quiet baby, and when our little one cries, we start questioning everything: Am I doing it wrong? Am I breaking trust? Should I stop this immediately?

But what if we rewrote this story? Instead of seeing crying as a problem, what if we recognized it as a form of communication—not something to fix, but something to support?

Today, we’re unpacking:

  • Why society has trained us to fear crying
  • How crying is essential for emotional development
  • The shift from “stop the crying” to “support the feeling”
  • Why embracing emotions at bedtime can actually make sleep easier
  • How to attune to your baby’s needs without feeling overwhelmed

When we learn to hold space for our baby’s emotions without panic, everything changes. Parenting becomes less about “fixing” and more about guiding, supporting, and responding with confidence.

Is Your Baby Intense, Sensitive, Easy or Adaptable? Understanding Temperament & What It Means for You04 Feb 202500:50:01

Welcome back, Thrivers! Today, we’re diving into one of the most powerful tools in parenting—understanding temperament. Temperament is the foundation of who we are, shaping how our children experience and react to the world. And the more we understand it, the better we can support them in ways that truly meet their needs.

In this episode, I break down the nine temperament traits identified by researchers Thomas and Chess, including adaptability, persistence, sensitivity, and intensity of reaction. I’ll also share real-life stories from clients and my own parenting journey to illustrate how temperament influences everything from transitions to sleep.

Plus, we’ll explore how your own temperament as a parent affects the way you interact with your child—because parenting is a two-way street! Whether you’re raising an easygoing dandelion, a sensitive orchid, or a slow-to-warm tulip, this episode will help you navigate the unique needs of your child without limiting their potential.

I talked about:

  • What is temperament and why does it matter?
  • The 9 key temperament traits and how they show up in daily life
  • How to work with your child’s temperament instead of against it
  • Why understanding your own temperament is just as important
  • Practical strategies to nurture your child’s growth without boxing them in

Tune in, take notes, and get curious about your child’s temperament. Share your reflections with me—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
