My guest on this week’s episode is the awesome Jill Stark.
Jill, who is both single and childfree, is a best-selling author, content specialist and award-winning journalist, who uses the power of storytelling as a tool for connection and change. Her best-selling books include Happy Never After and High Sobriety. She is from Scotland but lives in Melbourne, Australia.
Topics that we cover are:
the parallels between sobriety and choosing the single life;
why she describes herself as a social agitator;
how Jill grew up in a culture of drinking, and how she took that into her adult life;
the irony of how she became a health reporter writing about binge drinking;
how she came to quit drinking, initially for three months, and how much she loved it;
the book deal that saw her quit drinking for a further year;
people’s reactions to Jill’s sobriety;
being single, and how Jill never questioned whether she actually wanted to get married and have kids;
the correlation between quitting drinking and her clarity around her relationship status;
Jill’s podcast, Well Enough Alone;
her ‘Solo Sunday’ events in Melbourne;
why we shouldn’t be looking to other people to fix feelings of loneliness;
the lie we’ve been told that one person can fix all of our problems or complete us;
Jill’s mental health crisis in 2014;
how fundamentally important it is to develop a strong sense of self;
how we’re so conditioned to see marriage and babies as ‘success’;
the growing ‘movement’ of single women;
how Jill resonates with Bella DePaulo’s notion of being ‘single at heart’.

In this week’s episode, I’m talking to the wonderful Nanette Riendeau.
Nanette is a psychotherapist living in Illinois, US. She is married, but spent several years as a single woman having married relatively late in life. She is childfree by circumstance and shares this aspect of her life on her Instagram page @childlessgrace.
Topics that Nanette & I cover are:
how Nanette is passionate about helping other childless women;
the relationship that Nanette thought would result in children, but subsequently ended;
what she learnt through her master’s degree in Women’s Spirituality;
how desperately she wanted to grow and birth a baby, as well as be a mother;
Nanette’s journey of self-discovery and personal growth during her single years from age 37 to 44;
the ‘secret’ that women actually get better with age;
how Nanette felt it was the pandemic that finally closed the door on her having a baby;
her advice for those women who are grieving not having children;
knowing that you are the observer of your thoughts, not your thoughts themselves;
how we always romanticise the paths in life that we didn’t take;
how cultivating our relationship with ourselves is one of the most important things;
social media, and the concept of ‘likes’;
how so many people don’t ask us about our lives if they don’t involve partners and kids;
the damaging narrative that you 'haven’t been chosen’ if you’re single;
the importance of understanding that our worth is inherent;

On today's minisode, I'm talking about 15 ideas for solo dates.
Despite being single and childfree, and subsequently spending a fair bit of time in our own company, it's important to spend intentional time going on dates...with ourselves. Planning out solo dates is a way of showing ourselves that we love and respect the person with whom we have THE most important relationship of all.

On today's episode, I'm talking about the things we wish our married and coupled friends would say or not say, and do or not do, to show their support and respect for our single lives.
From leaving us out of social events or asking us annoying questions, to not showing an interest in our single lives or assuming we can drop everything to accommodate their needs, this is the episode your coupled counterparts need to listen to!

On today's minisode, I'm talking all about starting over, starting again, or finally starting that thing you've always wanted to do.
We are often led to believe that once you get to a certain age, or a certain stage in life, that it would be foolish, or embarrassing, or even pointless to start all over again. I, for one, do not believe this to be the case.
Even if the people around us think we're crazy, and even if we're scared, it is more than possible to take the leap and make a fresh start. What is crazier and scarier is to continue living a life that feels mediocre.
And we don't need to know exactly what it'll look like, how it'll pan out, or even how we're going to go about it; we just need to start, because clarity comes through action. So many of the best things in life appear on the other side of uncertainty. So what are you waiting for? It's never too late to start over.

This week's episode is a recording of a presentation that I did a few weeks ago for the Childless Collective Summit.
But...even if you're happy with your childless or childfree status, I think there's something in here for everybody.
I talk all about happiness being an inside job, how we can change our lives by changing our thoughts, and how we need to get strict about what we're choosing to focus on.

Today's episode is a solo one where I'm talking about being single at Christmas - and a couple of other random things.
I talk about some of the reasons why it's great to be single at Christmas, as well as a couple of things we can do to feel better about our solo Christmas. I also talk about why Christmas as a single woman does not have to be any less fun or less lovely than Christmas as part of a couple.
Finally, I share my thoughts on the changing narrative around singlehood, and why I believe there is a shift in consciousness around women on their own.

On today’s Thursday Thoughts, Polly and I are talking about self-love.
From learning to accept all parts of ourselves, having the courage to get out of a bad situation, or refusing to dumb down the parts of ourselves that are ‘too much’, self love is more important than we might realise. Because how we feel about ourselves affects every area of our lives.

In this week’s episode, I’m talking to the very cool and very awesome, Jayne Archer.
Jayne works in the field of mental health, specifically children and young people, and has done so for 20 years. She also has her own small business called Grow In Your Own Direction, in which she offers counselling and coaching for people who are looking for meaning, direction, or purpose in their lives, including single, childfree women.
She has been single for 10 years, and lives alone in Bristol.
Topics that Jayne & I cover are:
how her journey of being single and childfree has been full of twists and turns;
how she grew up with two conflicting female role models in her life, and how this caused her confusion in terms of what she wanted for herself;
how Jayne always knew that she didn’t want kids or a ‘traditional’ life;
her love of music and how that and the community around it helped her to feel a sense of self for many years;
feeling as though she was an outsider whilst all of her peers were getting married and having babies;
how she’s always found her sense of belonging and ‘forward motion’ through her career in mental health;
being in and out of relationships since her teens, and how a part of her wanted to be with somebody;
how the end of her most recent relationship was the catalyst for Jayne to focus inwards and work on building the relationship with herself;
how she quit online dating, and how that allowed her to let go of any control or time frame around any future relationship;
whether or not Jayne feels she is the best version of herself when she’s alone;
Jayne’s experience of living in a spiritual community;
what spirituality means to Jayne, and how it can look very different for different people;
why Jayne feels so strongly that there shouldn’t be any shame in admitting to feeling lonely;
how being single and childfree gives us an opportunity to cultivate intergenerational friendships, and how Jayne truly loves having those relationships in her life;
our shadow selves, and how to confront those darker parts of us;
Jayne’s thoughts on the possibility of being single forever;
why living a simple life is equally valid if you’re single and childfree.

On today's minisode, I'm talking about the power of consistency.
We sometimes overlook how much can be achieved by taking small steps...consistently. It’s not about the grand, sweeping actions, but the tiny little things that we do over and over again that create the big wins. It’s not about the scope of what we do, it’s about the consistency with which we do it.

This week’s episode is Part 2 of my conversation with Bella DePaulo.
Bella DePaulo, PhD, is the leading expert on single life and has been described by The Atlantic as “America’s foremost thinker and writer on the single experience.” Bella coined the term ‘single at heart’, and her new book, Single At Heart, comes out on 5th December 2023. She is the author of Singled Out and How We Live Now, among other titles; has written the “Living Single” blog for Psychology Today since 2008; and has been published by the New York Times, the Washington Post, Time magazine, The Atlantic, and many others. She has appeared on shows including The Today Show and Good Morning America. She has been interviewed on NPR , as well as on podcasts by CNN, The Atlantic, and others.
Bella’s TEDx talk, “What no one ever told you about people who are single,” has been viewed more than 1.6 million times.
In Part 2 of this interview about Bella’s new book, Single At Heart, topics that we cover are:
how our preoccupation with loneliness has obscured the joys and wonders of solitude;
how loving solitude is linked with better psychological health, and how it can be fulfilment and contentment for the single at heart;
how solitude for Bella means that she can think with her whole mind and feel with her whole heart;
how the single at heart tend to have ‘the ones’ instead of ‘the one’;
the idea of being open to all sorts of relationships, including spiritual figures, nature, or pets;
how children can actually benefit from having a single at heart parent;
how singles can still have children in their life in the form of nieces, nephews, students and beyond;
asexuality, and how a significant number of single at heart people are asexual;
how during her research, Bella found that people who are single at heart tend to savour the simple joys in life;
how, despite what people may think, the long-term single actually enjoy their older years more than those who have been long-termed coupled;
the shocking research that shows that people simply do not believe it when single people ‘claim’ to be happy;
the most unexpected finding that Bella discovered about those who are single at heart.

On today's minisode, I'm talking about why our minds work in the same way as the Instagram algorithm.
If we watch a reel of a cute puppy, the algorithm will serve us up more reels of cute puppies. And if we keep watching reels of cute puppies, then we're guaranteed to see more and more of them in our feeds.
It's the same with our minds. Whatever it is that we place our attention on, we will find more of in life. Constantly thinking about how shit the world is? Expect to see more things that prove it to you. Constantly thinking about how fabulous the world is? Then you can expect your brain to find more things to feel fabulous about.
It's so simple. Place your attention on the things you want, take your attention off the things you don't want, and watch your life change for the better.

On today’s Thursday Thoughts, Polly & I are talking about early morning routines.
Both of us get up pretty early in order to cross things off our list, such as meditation and exercise; but if this fills you with horror…keep listening!
We talk about why carving out time early in the morning is incredibly beneficial not only to your day, but also to your life. We share tips on how to actually get your ar*e out of bed, and also discuss what our own routines look like.

In this week’s episode, I’m talking to the one-and-only Bella DePaulo.
Bella DePaulo, PhD, is the leading expert on single life and has been described by The Atlantic as “America’s foremost thinker and writer on the single experience.” Bella coined the term ‘single at heart’, and her new book, Single At Heart, comes out on 5th December 2023. Bella’s TEDx talk, “What no one ever told you about people who are single,” has been viewed more than 1.6 million times.
In Part 1 of this interview about Bella’s new book, Single At Heart, topics that we cover are:
being ‘single at heart’ refers to those who live their best lives, and who flourish, being single;
how the stigma surrounding singles remains prevalent and how singles are still considered to be living a lesser life;
the idea that you cannot be truly fulfilled or ‘adult’ until you are part of a couple;
how the research studies show that a large number of people do not desire a partner, despite the assumption that everybody wants a romantic relationship;

how singles are getting happier after the age of forty;
those people in relationships who are unable to live an authentic life as part of a couple;

how, if you’re single at heart, coupled life would be a smaller life, and single life can be an expansive life;
how when you’re single at heart, you can be genuinely happy for the married people with kids around you;
how Bella found that everyone she interviewed for Single At Heart cited freedom as one of the main benefits of being single;

On today's minisode, I'm talking about why, and how, we should make the most of the final 5 weeks and 2 days of 2023!
There is a tendency to wind down as soon as November arrives, telling ourselves: "Ah well - it's nearly Christmas, so I might as well leave it until next year." The 'it' being anything from our exercise regime, our healthy eating plan, or a life goal that we've been working towards.
I think this is a mistake. We can still achieve more than we think before Big Ben chimes midnight on New Year's Eve, and wouldn't it feel better to nail the rest of this year so we start 2024 as we mean to go on?

On today's episode, I'm talking about what it means to have 'fun'.
The word 'fun' is often associated with parties and other large gatherings of people, involving drinking, music, dancing...and all the other 'traditional' ideas of what fun looks like. But what about the quieter side of fun?
As someone who considers herself far more a homebody than a party girl, does that mean that I'm no fun? Or does it just mean that fun doesn't look the same for everybody?
For me, fun can mean getting up early to watch the sunrise by the river, or chilling at home on a Saturday night with my cat, or even so-called work that gets me in my creative flow state.
Whether you're happier dancing the night away with a group of friends, or going on a long hike with your rescue dog, fun gets to be whatever you want it to be. So the next time someone calls you 'boring' as you attempt to make a swift exit from a party, remember that you get to be unapologetic about doing what feels aligned for you.

On today’s Thursday's Thoughts, Polly and I are talking all about boundaries.
We discuss why it can be so incredibly hard to set boundaries with the people you love; why it’s ok to say no even when you don’t have an ‘excuse’; how saying yes to something you don’t really want to do is saying no to yourself; and how resentment can build when we fail to put the necessary boundaries in place to protect our own wellbeing.

In this week's episode, I’m talking to the inspiring Amy Key.
Amy is a poet and author who lives in London. Her poetry collection, Luxe, was published in 2013. Her second collection, Isn’t Forever, was published in 2018 and was a Poetry Book Society Wild Card choice. Amy’s debut non-fiction book, Arrangements in Blue, was published in spring 2023. The book uses Joni Mitchell’s 1971 album, Blue, as a framework to investigate our cultural obsession with coupledom, and what it means to live a life in the absence of romantic love.
Amy grew up in Kent and the North East, but has lived and worked in London since 2001.
Topics that Amy & I cover are:
how, when she broke up with her last boyfriend at the age of 22, she assumed her singleness would be temporary;
how in her thirties she thought there was something uniquely wrong with her that was the reason she was alone;
how putting romantic love at the centre of everything can be damaging to both singles and people in relationships;
how Amy used to think of herself as a perpetual adolescent rather than a ‘proper’ adult;
how Amy still feels lonely at times, but how she has learnt to embrace her solitude;
her advice for singles about the importance of being intentional with their weekend time;
why we should question the relative importance of romantic love;
how Amy came up with the idea for her book, Arrangements in Blue;
how Amy has spent a lifetime listening to Joni Mitchell, and how she is in her blood;
how she used the songs from Joni’s album, Blue, to give the book a framework to reflect back the different elements of Amy’s single life;
how the song, All I Want, resonated with Amy as soon as she heard it at the age of 14;
the meaning behind, and Amy’s interpretation of, the songs Blue, A Case of You, and The Last Time I Saw Richard in the book;
how the concept of having a ‘soulmate’ can make single people feel even more lonely;
how other things in life can make you equally as happy as romantic love.

On today's minisode, I'm talking about the completely divine and brilliantly funny, Matthew Perry.
I felt called to do a minisode following his death because it seems to have hit me harder than any celebrity death in my lifetime so far - and I know I'm not alone.
I talk about his cult character, the one-and-only Chandler Bing - aka Chanandler Bong, Friends mania and the TV show that captured our hearts for 10 years, as well as Matthew Perry's well-documented struggle with addiction.
I also read out some of his own words about how he wanted to remembered after his death.

In this week's episode, I’m talking to the fabulous Julie Sondra Decker.
Julie Sondra Decker, is an author from Tampa, Florida. She writes fiction for adults and children—usually speculative fiction, fantasy, and science fiction—and she is widely known for her nonfiction work in asexuality awareness activism. Her nonfiction title, The Invisible Orientation, was released in September 2014.
Julie is single and childfree, also asexual and aromantic, and she’s known as a very prominent voice for the asexual community.
Topics that Julie & I cover are:
what it was like to grow up as an asexual woman in the 80s and 90s;
how Julie doesn’t experience either romantic, or sexual, attraction;
how she isn’t drawn to either men or women, although asexuals who aren’t aromantic tend to have a gender preference;
the ‘excuses’ that people used to made for Julie’s asexuality;
how people can say hurtful things, even if they aren’t intending to;
what motivated Julie to write her book, The Invisible Orientation;
how she wanted to have a section in the book that de-bunked the common misconceptions about asexuality;
how one such misconception is that asexuality is a temporary state;

how in Julie’s experience, there tend to be more asexuals who want relationships than those that don’t;
how there are some asexuals who still enjoy sex, as well as those who still have a sex drive;
the benefits of being asexual;
how being asexual allows Julie to be more objective when it comes to judging other people;
the wonderful freedoms that come with being a single woman.

In the words of Frank Sinatra...'regrets, I've had a few'. But I choose not to dwell on them.
How many times have you been asked "Aren't You Worried You'll Regret Not Having Kids?" On today's minisode, I talk about why this question irks me (to put it mildly) not least because I don't believe that it's the regret that trumps all others.
I also talk more generally about regrets and why, unless we're actually going to do something about them, they truly are a waste of our time and our energy.
Ultimately, regret is a choice. And we have it within our power to choose NOT to regret things we've either done, or haven't done. Instead, we can choose to embrace the choices we have made, and focus our energy on what we have in front of us, rather than what we've left behind.

On today’s Thursday Thoughts, Polly & I are talking about fear.
The thing about fear is that it’s always going to be there. Whether it’s fear about handing your notice in at work, or fear about ending a relationship, fear isn’t going anywhere. So the question is: how do we face it, deal with it, and move through it?
Polly & I talk about our own relationships with fear, and share what we do to ensure that it doesn’t hold us back from pursuing the things we desire.

Laura is a travel writer, speaker, author and presenter who lives near Melbourne, Australia. She is the author of ‘Bewildered’, a book about her solo journey hiking New Zealand’s Te Araroa trail, 3000 kilometres of raw, wild, mountainous trail winding from the top of the North Island to the tip of the South Island. Originally, Laura was meant to walk the 5 month trail with her friend, but when the friend decided to drop out on day two, Laura made the decision to continue on alone.
Laura is single, childfree, and is a member of the Australian Society of Travel Writers and the Adventure Travel Trade Association. She has written for numerous publications including Escape (Newscorp), NZ Herald, Australian Traveller, Geographical UK, RAC, Jetstar, Virgin, Outdoor, Wild, Great Walks, Action Diver, Active Retirees and many more.

her decision to continue alone when her friend dropped out on Day 2;
how the trek involved hiking thick forests, volcanic terrain, mountains, as well as rafting down rivers;
how Laura loved the simplicity of ‘no makeup, no mirrors, no media’;
how although she was alone, Laura would sometimes walk with other people on the trail;
how getting caught in a snow storm taught Laura that she was capable of doing it on her own;
how Laura found the physical strength required for the trip more difficult than the mental strength;
how the anxiety and depression that Laura was suffering from before she left, completely lifted within a couple of weeks on the trail;
the transformative power of nature, and how Laura felt totally connected to the nature around her;
how the trip freed up her mind and she felt a lightness of being;
how her trip gave her the courage to go after her dreams of being a writer;
how passion is a great compass to tell you if you’re on the right track in life;
Laura’s book, BeWILDered, and how it was even harder than her 5 month hike;
how Laura would love a partner to share her life’s journey with.

On today's minisode, I'm talking about why it's not a problem when someone doesn't like us.
Much as we'd all love everybody to think we're bloody fabulous, that simply isn't how life works. Unfortunately, there will always be people for whom we're just not their cup of tea.
But is it really 'unfortunate'? Or is there actually a compelling reason why we should be happy that some people love us and others, well, hate us?!

The last couple of weeks have shocked us all to the core, and with the terrible events in Israel and Gaza it would be easy to forget about all the good in this world.
But ironically, the best way to stand against these kind of atrocities is by refusing to lose faith in humanity, and instead to look for the goodness in life every, single day.
I talk about a recent experience in my own life that reminded me that most of us are, in essence, loving, kind and decent.
The truth is that when we look for the bad, we will find it, but when we look for the good, we will find that too.

A couple of recent stories in the news have got me thinking (more than usual) about how much the content we consume impacts the way we think, feel, and behave.
It is so incredibly important to be mindful about what we're watching, listening to, who we're following, and who we're hanging out with.

On today's minisode, I'm talking about one of my favourite things...sleep.
We all know that sleep is important, but do we really understand how essential it is for us to get 7 - 9 hours' shut-eye per night?
As someone who prioritises sleep, I've listened to a fair few podcasts on the subject. This minisode takes some of what I've learned and condenses that information into about 15 minutes!
I talk briefly about some of the (scary) reasons we need to get serious about our sleep habits, and also about some of the things we can do right now to optimise our time in the land of nod.

In this week's episode, I’m talking to author and modern-day nomad, Lisa Jansen.
Lisa was born and raised in Germany, but has lived in New Zealand for 17 years. When she was 33, she realised that the ‘traditional’ life path of marriage and babies wasn’t necessarily for her, and she decided to buy a camper van which she lived and travelled around New Zealand in for four and a half years. During her travels around New Zealand, Lisa wrote her first book, ‘One Size Does Not Fit All’, and she has since written ‘Life Done Differently’ which documents the high and the lows of her time on the road. Lisa is happily single and childfree, and is currently housesitting in Auckland, whilst working part-time in marketing which has been her career since she arrived in New Zealand.
Topics that Lisa & I cover are:
how her 33rd birthday weekend was the beginning of her ‘mini life crisis’;
how the ‘dream’ of marriage and babies didn’t seem to resonate with her;
how Lisa initially planned to live and travel in her camper van for a summer;
Lisa’s journey of personal growth and how important self-awareness and mindset are to her;
thinking ‘outside the box’ and considering other options when it comes to the 9 - 5;
the challenges of ‘swimming against the tide’ and how Lisa’s whole life had prepared her for it;
relishing alone time, and how Lisa has a very rich inner world;
how the most valuable lesson Lisa has learned from her nomadic lifestyle, is how little she needs to be happy;
the idea in society that the ‘normal’ path in life inevitably leads to happiness, whereas anything else is ‘risky’;
how and why Lisa differentiates between being ‘solo’ and being single;
