| 122. Hoosiers, Bears, fighting and Shackleton with Paul Frith | 09 Aug 2024 | 01:22:26 | |
This week, Seb and Verity are joined by composer, arranger, keyboard player with the Hoosiers, long time Bear’s Den collaborator and old mate Paul Frith. In true Three In A Bar style this episode is full of twists and turns - we find out whether Paul has ever been in a fight, how he came to write a symphony about Shackleton and some super niche mouthpiece chat. We also find out why Paul and his Hoosier band mates had to be speedily escorted from a gig venue somewhere in the north of England. Paul is the first guest we’ve had who has set us a mathematical challenge - Do we think this is something that will catch on? That is yet to be seen! In fact, Monique goes one step further and tries to teach Verity how to do the same. You’ll be delighted to hear the results are all recorded for your listening pleasure?! | 33. Chris Smith | 30 Nov 2020 | 01:17:25
It’s episode 33 and Seb and Verity head south of the river to chat to trombonist, co founder of the Old Dirty Brasstards and all round top bloke, Chris Smith. We don’t like favouritism here at Three In A Bar but boy, what a great host Chris was! In what felt as close to a social event as you get these days the wine was flowing and conversation covered Glastonbury - it may be the first time ever the world famous festival has been compared to Wigan - Spotify algorithms, the inception of the Brasstards and their speedy path to success. Chris reminisces about his days at Junior Academy and they talk about their varied early experiences of singing in choirs....you genuinely won’t believe which of the three sang at the Proms. Verity’s mind is blown by some 80’s TV trivia and Seb reveals the difficulties he faced googling the ungoogleable Chrs Smith. They quiz Chris on his extensive knowledge of Indie music, in particular his love of the Manic Street Preachers and they look to the future with what might be on the cards for ODB in the coming months. | 32. Anna Whitehouse (Mother Pukka) | 23 Nov 2020 | 01:24:42
We’re back with this week’s episode in 3, 2, 1 ......... and our guest is Heart DJ, journalist, author, podcaster, campaigner and influencer, Anna Whitehouse. Seb and Verity drop in to Anna’s East London offices, lukewarm cava in hand, for a chat about the various strands of her eclectic career. She talks them through her journey from Practical Caravan magazine (tow bar specialist) to becoming host of a Heart show with a multi million listenership. They also discuss her unashamed love of pop, the art of a slick 15 second segue, giving relationship advice to Darren Day and working with a Spice Girl. Anna chats candidly about her struggles with post-natal depression at a time when she was applying for her dream job in radio and the huge anxiety and pressure this created. She talks about pivotal moments that have shaped her career decisions and inspired some of her incredible campaigns, namely Flex Appeal. In an unexpected U-turn, Seb and Verity chat with Anna about social media as a force for good (they turn on a penny, that pair) and Anna gives some excellent advice on how we can all create a positive online presence. Thanks to the aforementioned cava, Anna tells us a great story about trying to pull H from Steps at V Festival. | 31. Alice Kent | 16 Nov 2020 | 01:13:53
It’s all about that bass, ‘bout that bass (you get the picture) with this week’s guest, Alice Kent. Seb and Verity chat to Alice in early November as she’s putting the final touches to the latest video in her YouTube series Alice’s Musical Galaxy. She talks about becoming tech savvy, green screen issues and how she’s making string teaching exciting and vibrant for players of all ages and abilities. Its a wide ranging conversation - at times underscored by the dulcet tones of tromboning from Alice’s partner, John Stokes... They cover everything from the Benedetti Foundation (Alice has tutored for them since it’s inception) to self defence lessons via folded Ross Kemp. They discuss the adaptability of musicians and the highs and lows of a busy freelance career. Alice has played for virtually every professional UK orchestra you could name. There is much discussion of Alice's incredible eyewear - jazz glasses no less - and a slightly awkward moment where Seb discovers he’d been at junior college with Alice for a couple of years and not realised. SOUND THE ALARMS, IT’S A NATIONAL TREASURE ALERT! This week Seb and Verity are joined by comedian, singer and actor Rob Brydon, who invited them into his beautiful garden for a hilarious and frank conversation. Rob regales them them with such tales as filming in Las Vegas with Tom Jones, receiving wise words from a Bee Gee, battling Steve Coogan on a lilo and the pain of unrequited love in school musicals. They chat about Rob’s tour, A Night of Songs and Laughter, and how Seb ended up in his and. He tells them what still makes him nervous and how he’s gaining confidence and improving his (already ruddy excellent) singing. Rob treats Seb and Verity to a healthy smattering of his legendary Tom Jones and Elvis impressions... along with an impressive bass effect, a touch of trumpet and an infamous Nirvana guitar line. /// Show Notes Rob Brydon Wikipedia (https://tinyurl.com/yxuflcll) Rob Brydon Live Website (https://robbrydon.live/) The Trip - Brydon & Coogan Sing The Winner Takes It All (https://tinyurl.com/y6fkvcaq) Rob and Tom Jones Sing The Jungle Book (https://tinyurl.com/y68fsqen) Barry Islands in the Stream - Red Nose Day song 2009 (https://tinyurl.com/y3gg5nvq) Paul Herbert Musical Director (https://twitter.com/paulhbtmusic) Hosted on Acast. It’s a Three In A Bar double whammy this week with clarinettist, presenter, workshop leader and teacher Jessie Grimes. Seb and Verity visit Jessie in her South London flat - also home to her hugely popular Homemade Garden Jam series. In the first episode, Jessie chats about her lockdown project which involved chamber music, audience participation and tomato juggling. They also discuss her early years in Ireland, folk music (including some fantastic live whistle playing and less impressive attempts to decipher folk notation by the others) and grunge fashion choices. Jessie talks about the joys of performing with her multi award winning ensemble - the Jacquin Trio, learning to value yourself personally and professionally and tactics for beating the winter lockdown blues. /// Show Notes Hosted on Acast. | 28. Chris Augustine | 26 Oct 2020 | 01:31:41
Joining us in the bar - or rather Seb’s living room this week - is trombone Adonis, Christopher Augustine. Chris is currently based in Cardiff where he is sub principal trombonist with WNO. Seb and Verity catch up with him as a small window appears in his busy schedule whilst he is briefly in London for a Chineke! project. They chat about early inspirations, Chris’ unlikely transition from soprano recorder to trombone and his dream of an idyllic retirement in Cornwall. Chris talks Seb and Verity through his daily routine, which includes an intense fitness regime and serious levels of discipline (4 boiled eggs for a breakfast side dish anyone?!). They also discuss his personal experiences as a black classical musician and whether it has affected his career/musical education. This episode is brought to you under the influence of high levels of sugar as all involved had consumed Seb’s notorious Curly Whirly cake.....words per minute are through the roof. /// Show notes Chineke! at the Royal Festival Hall, Radio 3 Broadcast Hosted on Acast. | 27. Dr Arun Menon | 19 Oct 2020 | 01:13:15
This week’s guest is half viola player/half anaesthetist, Dr Arun Menon - the most niche superhero the world has ever seen...... Having suffered kidney failure in 2005, Arun made the difficult decision to put his hugely successful freelance career on hold and go back into education to begin the epic journey into medicine - his training began in 2006 and he is still three and a half years away from being a fully qualified anaesthetist. During this time, Arun was frequently studying/on the wards by day and performing at the Royal Opera House and with Birmingham Royal Ballet by night. Seb and Verity chat with Arun about his duel career - the opportunity to draw similarities between viola playing and putting people to sleep is too hard to resist, particularly for Verity who is in full ‘end of the pier entertainer’ mode. Arun talks about the intricacies of brain surgery, what it’s like trialling for principal viola jobs and stereotypes for different medical specialists...he’s irritatingly diplomatic! Seb refers to his specialist medical knowledge (Breaking Bad) to quiz Arun on Nitrous Oxide.....unfortunately it seems Arun didn’t use that syllabus in his training. /// Show Notes Instagram: vlamenon Twitter: @amenondr Hosted on Acast. This week we go off piste (that’s right, p-i-s-t-e) with a visit from wine aficionado and co-owner of Yardarm Leyton, Eliza Parkes. Eliza selects four fantastic wines to compliment Seb and Verity’s four music choices and they spend a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon tasting the wine and discussing the music. Sometimes work is so trying eh? Be reassured in the knowledge that the spittoon is used liberally so the conversation remains coherent. In between each track, Seb and Verity chat to Eliza about her path into wine specialism, the relationship between the senses and memory and most importantly, her appearances on Sunday Brunch. Stay tuned to the very end to hear Eliza’s choice and the extraordinary wine she brings as a gift from her own personal collection.....chin, chin! Why not make this a full interactive experience? This is the first of two special episodes charting the Let Music Live events in London and Birmingham on 6 October 2020, highlighting the current threat to thousands of jobs in the freelance music industry. Seb and Verity have an exclusive chat to event founder, violinist and superwoman, Jessie Murphy. Jessie discusses her inspiration for creating this protest, how it’s grown into such a huge movement and what the plans for tuesday’s events are. Having actively avoided talking about the Covid crisis in detail, now seemed to be an important time to highlight the plight of musicians and support this cause. | 22. Laura Melhuish, Ric Ashton & Millie Ashton | 07 Sep 2020 | 01:38:11
It’s a momentous week at Three In a Bar......not only is this the first episode recorded where all parties are in the same space since February but it is also our first musical dynasty. Violinist Laura Melhuish, horn player Ric Ashton and their daughter, Millie Ashton (wunderkind violinist) invite Seb and Verity into their fabulous home for a chat, great snacks and much hilarity. The scene is set in the Ashton/Melhuish garden with Ric and Laura's other two daughters and assorted friends coming and going - a joyous contrast to the usual zoom set up. They discuss online final recital ordeals - Millie having just completed her undergraduate and how with twenty plus years attendance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama between them perhaps a blue plaque is in order? Conversation ranges from negotiating family life as freelance musicians to eating like Tudors during lockdown. They debate whether snakebite and black is legal and hear about Ric’s days partying on the beach in the South of France with Elton John. Seb and Verity quiz Laura on the illustrious list of artists and films she’s played for over the years....including a slightly cringe worthy exchange with Posh Spice on a Spice Girls tour. They broach the subject of fashion choices, with some strong looks being uncovered.....Think Laura Ashley dresses and in Seb’s case, a studded choker. | 21. Rachel Rowntree | 31 Aug 2020 | 01:14:31
C’est un invité magnifique! This week Seb and Verity are joined by violinist and broadcaster, Rachel Rowntree. Be honest, who hasn’t thought to themselves maybe now’s the time to up sticks and start again somewhere glamorous and exciting abroad? Well, rather than giving in after numerous failed attempts at Duolingo and booking a holiday, Rachel actually made the move to Paris ten years ago and has carved out a hugely successful career there. Impressive eh? Seb and Verity caught up with Rachel in the midst of a house move from Paris to Lille where her family will now be based. Surrounded by a wall of boxes, she talks about her work with Les Sieclés, an orchestra set up by François-Xavier Roth, and the familial feeling of being in the ensemble since it’s earliest days. They also discuss presenting education projects in French to hormonal teenagers, the perks of being a freelancer in France and some dubious colloquialisms she’s picked up along the way. Rachel discusses her work as a broadcaster, introducing concerts for the French channel Mezzo TV. This is a job she clearly loves....despite the hidden challenges presented by the occasional need for Chinese name pronunciation! Along with their own favourite moments, they hear from a number of the listeners about their own personal highlights. It won’t surprise you that Seb and Verity deviate from the course throughout, discussing hard hitting topics such as S Club 7, Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch and some musing on what Andrew Lloyd Webber might be up to currently. As Three In A Bar hits it’s twenties now seemed like a good time to try out a spot of blind dating. Introduced to us by the fabulous Michelle Taylor-Cohen (see episode 8), this week’s guest is composer, arranger and lyricist Shane Cullinan. Shane chats about his ensemble Tonic Fold and some of their early gigs, including the first Nottingham Pride - entitled Pink Lace, a show following a naked man covered in ultraviolet baby teats and a vomiting flautist. Since then the gigs have got rather more glamorous and have led to collaborations with the likes of David McAlmont, Rachel Tucker and Kathy Burke. They discuss Shane’s critically acclaimed oratorio, The Pieta, a beautiful piece set in Manchester and depicting a mother’s devastation at the loss of her son to street crime. Shane talks about some of the techniques he employed in the process of writing and scoring this as well as writing the libretto. Seb and Verity ask Shane about working with Kathy Burke again, writing the music for her West End production of Lady Windermere’s Fan. | 19. Laura Bangay | 10 Aug 2020 | 01:15:43
It’s episode 19 and who better to complement a hot summer’s day than the perennially radiant, Laura Bangay. Musical director/keyboard whiz/accordion hater Laura chats to Seb and Verity having had an extended period of Covid-19 lockdown isolation. They find out what she’s been doing to combat boredom, including a new found passion for kickboxing. Laura talks about her extensive work as a children’s MD, including a joyous five year stint on Matilda and most recently on the brand new musical The Boy In The Dress. There is a nod to her childhood self, who’s mind would have been blown at the prospect of working with Robbie Williams! They discuss Laura’s roll as an MD - a position in which women are still very much in the minority and suggest ways to rectify this imbalance. Laura also talks about nightmares caused by misfiring clicks, her turbulent relationship with the accordion and the potential for being bankrolled by her successful protégés....the latter may have or may not have been an idea perpetrated by Seb and Verity. /// Show Notes Twitter: @laurabangay Instagram @laurabangay ”Bread and Roses” from Pride, Musical direction-Laura Bangay Hosted on Acast. | 18. Irwin Sparkes | 03 Aug 2020 | 01:33:45
Warning, this episode contains unprecedented levels of Sid James style cackling emanating from Verity...brace yourselves. It’s episode 18 and look who’s dropped in to welcome them to the age of maturity....it’s none other than Hoosiers front man, Irwin Sparkes. Irwin also wears a magnificent new metaphorical hat for his solo alter ego White Tail Falls, releasing his album Age of Entitlement back in May to critical acclaim. Irwin chats about making his first album - the process starting back in 2016, writing for other artists, the highs and lows of being in a commercially successful band and navigating panel shows....made harder when a famous comedian nicks your gags (he’s not bitter). They talk about his stint at the Edinburgh Festival, existential crisis brought on by live streaming and Irwin impressively scatters some high class self referencing throughout the podcast. He tries to draw Seb and Verity into a clangfest but neither will break the unspoken code. There is the usual hard hitting journalism we’ve become accustomed to on Three In A Bar with discussions about how Eastenders and Coronation Street are negotiating the Corona Virus crisis and which is better, brass or strings? At the end of the podcast, Irwin gives a beautiful performance of Fake News and Body Weight from his new album. /// Show notes Instagram: @irwinsparkes Twitter: @IrwinofSparkes Irwin’s appearance on Never Mind The Buzzcocks Hosted on Acast. | 17. Cat Parker | 27 Jul 2020 | 01:13:15
We interrupt our regular broadcasts for a round the table chat with violinist and yoga guru Cat Parker. Think of this as interval drinks or a post concert catch up if you will..... Recorded back in January in a bustling kitchen in East Dulwich, Cat talks to Seb and Verity about a whole host of things including her experiences living in Paris and what led her there, future plans to potentially set up a yoga retreat In a rural French Idyll and bribing local mayors. Cat talks about training as a yoga teacher and encountering various interesting and sometimes bonkers takes on it around the world. She does a great job of selling the benefits of Yoga to even the perennially unbendy Verity and Seb discusses having revelations whilst doing hip rotations in Mayo Park. They catch up in mid July via zoom as Cat is in the process of house selling. She talks about uncovering old photos, videos and potential spy equipment....Cat also looks forward to moving on and finding a country pad that is part Jilly Cooper part The Archers. They discuss unearthing old repertoire through lockdown and attempting to relearn with varying success. At the very start of the interview there is a brief cameo from fellow violinist wunderkind, Millie Ashton who drops by to make a fish finger sandwich. /// Show notes Instagram: @catparkerviolin Hosted on Acast. | 16. Amos Miller | 20 Jul 2020 | 01:21:23
It’s episode 16 and it sure is a sweet one as today’s guest is trombone behemoth and recently appointed head of brass at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Amos Miller. Amos chats to Seb and Verity about online final recitals and his huge respect and excitement for the next generation of brass players passing through the conservatoire. He also tells them about his former lives as a psychology student (very useful) and a violinist (not so much). Amos talks about his internationally acclaimed quintet, Onyx Brass and their exciting upcoming projects, one of which involves previous Three In A Bar guest, Charlotte Harding. He also chats about Royal Ballet Sinfonia - with whom Amos is principal - and his renewed love for Swan Lake. They discuss Amos’ fantastic photography, which he somehow manages to fit into his packed schedule! Listen on to discover why it’s suggested Amos should form a band with an artist, a hiphop Dj and an Amish farmer.... /// Show Notes Twitter: @Amos_Miller Instagram: @amosjdmiller Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Hosted on Acast. | 15. Rachael Lander | 13 Jul 2020 | 01:16:55
This week Seb and Verity are joined by freelance cellist, Rachael Lander. Rachael discusses her battles with alcohol addiction and anxiety, which led to an extended break from playing and consequently entering recovery - all whilst in her early twenties. Since then, Rachael has returned to playing and has an extremely successful career working extensively in the West End, orchestral freelancing and as a session player. She credits her time in Raven string quartet for her return to music, finding a love for performing again... although a certain egg throwing incident brought these endeavours to an abrupt end. Rachael is a patron of Music Support charity (see link below). She is a truly inspirational person and her openness about issues that for years have been taboo throughout the music industry make a refreshing change. Regardless of whether you have suffered with addiction and anxiety, Rachael’s experiences and coping strategies are beneficial listening for all. /// Show Notes Instagram: @rachaellander84 Musician’s Union Support, Health and Well-being pages Hosted on Acast. Here come the bears! This week Seb and Verity are joined by Kevin Jones, one half of British folk rock band Bear’s Den. The release of this podcast coincides with the launch of Bear’s Den’s latest album Fragments.... It’s almost as if they had planned it! Recorded in late 2019, Kev talks about the band’s recent tours, from European stadiums supporting Neil Young to driving a land rover venue to venue around the wilds of Scotland. They discuss set design - with or without the inclusion of glitter canons, recording and leaving a bit of his heart in Seattle. They also share notes on the dubious origins of the Turbo Negroni. | 13. Charlotte Harding | 29 Jun 2020 | 01:23:19
Thirteen, unlucky for some? Not at Three In A Bar because their guest this week is award winning composer and saxophonist Charlotte Harding. Charlotte chats to Seb and Verity about her collaborations with BalletBoyz, Paraorchestra and Onyx Brass. The term ‘Orchestral Synthesizer’ gets bandied about by Verity - don’t worry, Charlotte clarifies what she’s wanging on about! There is misinformation about clubbing, discussions on dance music, leg warmers and some shocking discoveries about mutes. Yet again, Seb and Verity commit to a cause they will struggle to see through (see presents for guests). This time it’s starting a campaign for Charlotte to play ‘The Local Hero’ as Newcastle United run on to the pitch at St. James’ Park. Breaking news... this week, novice podcasters Seb Philpott and Verity Simmons invite journalist, interviewer, reviewer and broadcaster Jude Rogers for a chat. "Have they lost their minds?" we hear you ask. It's like Leyton Orient taking on Real Madrid. Luckily for them, Jude is both encouraging and forgiving and has countless tales to tell from her years interviewing and reviewing pop stars and musicians. Amongst other things, they discuss Mercury Award panel disagreements, interviewing Justin Timberlake on honeymoon (Jude's, not Justin's) and guests, both rude and delightful. Jude offers excellent advice on getting the most out of an interviewee (all carefully noted). In the third of their transatlantic trilogy, Seb and Verity chat to composer, arranger and multi instrumentalist Kelly Pratt. Kelly talks touring and orchestrating for David Byrne and St. Vincent, Beirut and Father John Misty. They chat about favourite festivals (remember them?!) and great venues. Verity tries to get Kelly to dish the dirt on the different character traits of musicians around the world whilst he tries to remain diplomatic. Kelly talks about his solo projects, including a homage of sorts to a much derided album from his childhood... Jimmy Buffett’s "Songs You Know By Heart". One of the tracks is entitled "Cheeseburger in Paradise". Nuff said. He earns serious guest points early on declaring his new found love for London, having travelled there for the first time last year to play Juan Peron in Evita at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.
During their conversation Ektor chats about his time on Broadway, a house visit from J-Lo and returning to Puerto Rico for an exciting new production of ‘In The Heights’, as well as a major solo art exhibition in St Juan. | ENO in crisis: what on earth is going on? With Coco Azoitei | 17 Feb 2024 | 00:27:30
In light of the recent announcements of redundancies in the Orchestra and Chorus at ENO and the extraordinary circumstances surrounding them we felt compelled to record an episode to chat through what on earth is going on. On 15 February orchestra & chorus members started receiving formal redundancy notices - some reporting they’d heard in the interval of their final performance of Handmaid’s Tail, having to then go on and complete the show. This comes in light of the MU recently calling off scheduled strikes as an agreement with ENO had been reached. We collar violinist Coco Azoitei on the train to Edinburgh to discuss ENO, Northern Ballet and the state of the music industry in general. Not currently the cheeriest of subjects but a very necessary conversation musicians need to be having to support our friends and colleagues. Just how do we both balance being parents of two whilst being busy freelance musicians, when our other halves are also busy freelance musicians? What do we wish we could say to our 20 year old selves? What's the best way to approacvh working with people when you're starting out in the music world? And just how much baby vomit does Seb have on his clothes right now? All this and more in today's episode. We're back at long last for Series 2 (can we call it that after 108 episodes?!) and what a fabulous guest to kick off 2024 - It's none other than West End leading lady Carly Anderson. Carly recently starred as Polly Baker in Crazy For You at the Gillian Lynne Theatre and her extensive list of credits include Glinda in the International tour of Wicked and Betty Schaefer in Sunset Boulevard at the London Coliseum. Seb and Verity caught up with Carly pre show at the Gillian Lynne in late 2023. Conversation includes audition nightmares, CFY's intense rehearsal process, corpsing on stage and ghostly experiences in theatres! Carly gets an insight into what was going on in the orchestral 'penthouse' at the Gillian Lynne - both musically and some loosely termed choreography. She talks about the cast's appearance on This Morning and the importance of having a great relationship with her fellow leads, Charlie Stamp and Tom Edden.
