Episode 74 | Life Sciences - The Science of Pain22 Nov 202100:31:22

This week’s Thought Starter asks where does pain come from, what does it mean, and what effect does it have on our daily lives?

Why Pain Hurts, And Why It Doesn't Have To', which explores why pain is complicated.  The way we treat pain is superficial – we seek out states of perfect painlessness by avoiding it at all costs, or suppressing it, usually with drugs. Through in-depth interviews, investigation into the history of pain and original research, the book paints a new picture of pain as a complex and multi-layered phenomenon.

Episode 72 | Take it from China: two design trade shows on how Covid-19 will change their events forever, with Aroma Xie and Zhuo Tan07 May 202000:23:18
As the whole world grapples with lockdowns, closures and cancelled events – and the milestones of the design industry’s busy calendar of trade shows disappears, we might look to one country for lessons on how to cope: China. The first to face the covid-19 crisis, and one of the first to begin emerging from it, we get the perspective from two major design industry shows on how 2020 might change their operations for good, and how they’ve tried to maintain value and purpose in the face of such an existential disruption. We speak with Aroma Xie, co-founder of Ontimeshow in Shanghai, which has become one of China’s biggest fashion trade shows, and Zhuo Tan, the Event Director at Design Shangai, one of the most important design and architecture trade shows in Asia.

Episode 68 | Kids go free: museums that design spaces for children, not about them, with the V&A's Philippa Simpson and architect Alan Maskin13 Mar 202000:39:42
Museums serve a lot of purposes – as places of learning, preservers of important artefacts and even as public spaces for people to relax and spend time.

But, how we think about the role of the museum does change, sometimes prompted by politics, other times by technology, and others because of changing tastes in architecture.

In this episode, we meet Alan Maskin, a principal and owner of Seattle-based architecture practice Olson Kundig, and Dr Philippa Simpson, Director of Design, Estate and Future Plan of the V&A. They are involved in reshaping museums for the future – and in particular, two museums for children, one here in London and the other in Berlin.

Episode 67 | Next stop: A train station you actually want to spend time in, with Adam Scott and Hiro Aso28 Feb 202000:35:45
There’s one thing we always take away from a space – an experience. Good, bad, totally neutral, their design and the way they’re brought to life affect our mood, they help or hinder us move through them, they provide amenity or perhaps they feel completely useless. One of the more complex and very often poorly executed spaces is that of the transportation hub. Stations are too often sad, too rarely exciting – they are vast and yet so often do nothing for a city unless you are coming or going.

In the pod today, architect Hiro Aso and experience masterplanner Adam Scott debate the joys and woes of these spaces around which we build the cities and towns we live in.

Episode 60 | The surprisingly colourful world of North Korean architecture, with Oliver Wainwright and Cristiano Bianchi01 Nov 201900:33:40
As guarded as the country is about itself, and as careful about who and what they let in, there is a certain pride taken in the architecture of North Korea – so found our two guests, both who’ve recently authored books on the subject. They first visited Pyongyang together four years ago, and this episode is bit of a reunion between them and the telling of a number of quite insightful observations and unusual anecdotes – seeing, for instance, a model of Sir Terry Farrell’s MI6 building in London next to the great pyramids of Egypt as sources of design inspiration; or, spending a meal singing Italian communist songs with a local architect.

The world’s population continues to flood from rural areas into cities often putting huge strain on their infrastructure. Earth’s climate is rapidly changing thanks to human activity and lack of care, putting at risk our fragile ecosystem. Episode 56 | In praise of the prototype, with Riya Patel and Dean Brown02 Sep 201900:34:24
Design, so it is so often said, is a process – one that drives idea into object, building or service. In the Pod today, a curator and a designer in praise of the prototype, which, as one of our guests puts it can “liberate you to think beyond the conventional.”

Episode 55 | The power of the smaller details, with Alex Gore and Timothy Smith29 Jul 201900:33:34
Buildings aren’t only to be admired from a distance – we also experience them up-close and personal. And that’s why details matter: the touch of a door handle, the ornament on a column; the colour of the walls; they can make a difference between spaces that work for us, and spaces that we love.

There are a lot of simple ideas that have big impact, and architects are often trying to find the balance between creating new and interesting work, putting ideas to action, but also ensuring that their work feels accessible to a broader audience. In this episode, a conversation with architects Alex Gore and Timothy Smith.

Episode 53 | The do-it-all design work of Sella Concept23 May 201900:28:51
It’s often hard to define the boundaries around ‘Design’ – and, more and more, design studios are dropping the posture that there are really any boundaries at all. Interior design, event design, branding, curation – they can all emerge from the same creative thought process, so why shouldn’t young business, in particular, lap them all up? And while we’re at it, why can other disciplines play a part in design too?

In this episode we meet the founders of Sella Concept, a design studio that challenges all of that.
