Building Your LTC at Home Pharmacy Business | TWIRx16 May 202501:36:07
In this episode of This Week in Pharmacy for May 16th, 2025, Pharmacy Podcast Network founder Todd Eury is joined by his co-host Dr. Ryan Paul Liabenow, PhD, CEO of Mango Health as they review TWIRx News. Our first segment, we explore the transformative potential of the Long-Term Care at Home (LTC@Home) pharmacy model. As healthcare shifts towards home-based care, pharmacies have a unique opportunity to expand their services beyond traditional settings.  Key Discussion Points:
  • Strategic Partnership Spotlight: We delve into the recent collaboration between RxSafe/Eyecon, PharmaComplete, and the LTC@Home Pharmacy Network. This alliance aims to revolutionize pharmacy operations through automation and expert consulting, enhancing patient care in the LTC@Home space.
  • Expert Insights: Paul Shelton, founder of PharmaComplete and co-founder of the LTC@Home Pharmacy Network, shares his extensive experience in pharmacy operations and discusses strategies for pharmacies to successfully implement LTC@Home services.
  • Automation in Focus: We examine how RxSafe's Eyecon technology, including RapidPakRx and RapidCardRx, is streamlining compliance packaging and improving workflow efficiency for pharmacies transitioning to the LTC@Home model.
  • Business Transformation: Learn how integrating LTC@Home services can lead to increased prescription volumes, enhanced patient outcomes, and new revenue streams for pharmacies.
Why This Matters: The LTC@Home model represents a significant shift in pharmacy services, aligning with the broader trend of patient-centered, home-based care. By adopting this model, pharmacies can play a pivotal role in reducing hospitalizations and improving the quality of life for patients requiring long-term care.

On the second feature, we spotlight a remarkable family legacy that’s shaped community pharmacy in Salt Lake City for over 70 years. We’re talking about Jolley’s Compounding Pharmacy—a third-generation, family-owned pharmacy that continues to blend tradition with innovation.

From the pioneering vision of Joel Jolley in 1954 to the modern leadership of Dean Jolley, R.Ph., and now Dr. Benjamin Jolley, the Jolley family has remained committed to personalized care, compounding excellence, and pharmacist-driven leadership. Ben is joined by his sister, Megan Jolley Milne, PharmD, BCACP, entrepreneur and CEO of Nutranize.

ATRIUMX Pharmacy Conference and the Truth about GLP-1 Drugs | TWIRx14 Feb 202501:12:16
The Next Gen Pharmacy Conference, ATRIUMX February 27 – March 1, 2025 The conference that puts you in control— you create the content.  Thank you Independent Pharmacy Cooperative (IPC) for sponsoring this episode of TWIRx!  Check out the iCare+ digital health platform: https://myicareplus.com/  2-Part Special:  FIRST -- Special guests: Atrium24 founder, Dr. Nicolette Mathey PharmD, ATRIUMX organizers Kelley Babcock, and Jen Diehl, and Pharmacy Busienss Consultant and owner Donnie Jordan Vice President Pharmacy Strategy at Health Growth Pharmacy Solutions.  SIGN UP HERE: https://atrium24.io/atriumx-conference-attendees/  NEXT -- on the second half of TWIRx, we talk with Dr. Julie Schulz, MD, MPH and Dr. Michael Dovidio, PharmD from Avalon Health talk about the challenges of 'quick fix' treatments and weight management plans with the inclusion of GLP-1s. From the article titled: "How to Maximize the Value of GLP-1 Drugs While Improving Health Equity" --Julie and Mike talk about the real world needs of people who want to lose weight, doing it the right way for long term benefit.  Due to the continued high cost, only patients with greater financial resources or those with generous employer-sponsored drug benefits will be able to afford the medications for obesity. This can exacerbate health inequities, likely driving significantly higher costs for public and commercial health plans, intensified by the new financial strain from weight loss medications. Rather than denying coverage for GLP-1s for obesity, health plans could modify eligibility policies to require data from a standardized set of laboratory tests and other biometrics to identify patients in most need of GLP-1s and verify medical necessity. This approach would reduce inappropriate prescribing while ensuring that patients who are most likely to benefit from the drugs have access to them.

New Rx Leadership & Laughing with a Pharmacy Dad | TWIRx02 Aug 202400:55:28
“Hey Cory, what do you do?” I am a comedian, pharmacist, author, and speaker. With the eye for detail of a pharmacist and the mind of a comedian, I am out to help others challenge the conventions and PREscriptions holding them back while adapting to the unknown and living in the moment. All while getting some laughs along the way.   Rewind to 2013, two years into my pharmacy career and there I was, struggling to adapt to the unscripted world of pharmacy and healthcare.   On paper I had checked all of the boxes: perfect grades, residency, board certifications. But then I realized something was missing - the ability to create meaningful connections in the moment with those I cared for, and the ability to adapt and remain flexible. 2013 was the year I went to my first improv class and two simple words changed everything for me: "Yes, and."   _____________   The Pennsylvania Pharmacists Care Network (PPCN) is pleased to announce that Dr. Rob Maher has been selected to serve as its new President and Chief Operating Officer (COO). Dr. Maher brings over 30 years of experience working in independent community pharmacy practice, ambulatory care pharmacy, long-term care pharmacy and hospital pharmacy.   Dr. Maher has an extensive history with PPCN, since its formation in 2015. Dr. Maher has been actively involved in PPCN since by serving as a PPCN luminary, PPCN trainer and technology solution support lead for PioneerRX. Dr. Maher has also represented PPCN nationally, serving for the past three years as Chair of the Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network's (CPESN) Quality Assurance Committee.   Most recently he has served as Director of Pharmacy Services for Klingensmith's Drugstore, a seven-store independent, family-owned chain of PPCN-member pharmacies located in Armstrong and Clarion counties. In this role, Dr. Maher lead the development, implementation, and growth of enhanced community pharmacy services across multiple locations. Through use of key performance indicators (KPIs), careful workflow considerations and by leaning into technology, Dr. Maher was able to position Klingensmith's to serve their communities while growing new business revenue.   In addition to his practice experience, Dr. Maher has spent the past 25 years serving as a faculty member and administrative pharmacist at the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy. During this time, Dr. Maher has taught and inspired countless student pharmacists through didactic courses related to the fundamentals of pharmacy practice management, implementation of pharmacy services and business planning/entrepreneurship.   Dr. Maher earned both his B.S. in Pharmacy (’93) and PharmD from the University of Pittsburgh ('97). In 1998, Dr Maher completed a Geriatric pharmacy specialized residency at Duke University's Center for the Study of Aging and the Durham Veteran's Affairs Geriatric Research Education Center. Growing up, Dr. Rob Maher worked in his family’s community pharmacy in Patton, Pa. (Cambria County) that his father owned and operated for 47 years. In 2021, the business was sold to another independent pharmacy owner. Dr. Maher also was a pharmacy owner partner for Mission Pharmacy Services, a long-term care pharmacy.   Dr. Maher will be taking over for Dr. Brandon Antinopoulos, the network's first President and COO. Dr. Antinopoulos is embarking on a new career path as an independent pharmacy owner. Current PPCN Executive Director, Stephanie McGrath, will remain in her role leading the network's program design, implementation, and evaluation efforts to advocate for the quality care provided by PPCN pharmacies.  PPCN Director of Engagement, Kelsey Hake, will also remain in her role supporting payer program implementation, evaluation and quality assurance.

Fighting for Independent Community Pharmacy | TWIRx01 Jul 202400:55:27
Special Intervieww with Ed Holt On May 8, Ed posted a sharp criticism of Governor Kemp’s veto of SB 198, a bill with broad bipartisan support that would help Georgia’s independent pharmacies. As then-President of the Georgia Pharmacy Association, Ed heard from many independents that if this bill didn’t pass it could mean the death of their stores. As the representative of GPHA, Ed felt it was his duty to make a statement. Later that evening, Ed's employer, PruittHealth, contacted him and asked me to take it down. He  complied immediately. On May 9, PruittHealth told Ed the post jeopardized their relationship with the Governor, and then they fired him. After 17 years of loyal service with not a single negative evaluation, Ed was terminated with no notice and with no severance. Ed has spent the last 7 weeks trying to get some sort of compensation for his time at the company. But PruittHealth has flatly refused stating that they violated their social media policy. Pharmacy 50's Sartoretto Verna; Finch Marketing | TWIRx26 Jan 202400:41:52
Visual design plays a crucial role in establishing a community pharmacy as a trusted and credible healthcare destination. A well-thought-out visual design can significantly impact the perception of the pharmacy and attract customers. On this episode of 'This Week in Pharmacy' we talk with award winning Pharmacy Designer Fiona Sartetto Verna and veteran pharmacy busienss marketing leader Nicolle McClure - CEO of Finch Marketing.  Here's a short summary of how visual design and marketing content can influence a community pharmacy:
  1. Professional Image: Visual design can create a professional and welcoming atmosphere in the pharmacy. This includes well-designed signage, a clean and organized interior layout, and aesthetically pleasing branding. A pharmacy that looks clean and organized is more likely to be perceived as reliable and trustworthy.
  2. Branding: Consistent and appealing branding through logos, color schemes, and signage helps in building a strong brand identity. A visually appealing logo and color palette can make the pharmacy memorable and easily recognizable in the community.
  3. Information Accessibility: Visual design can aid in making essential health information easily accessible. This includes clear labeling of medication shelves, informative pamphlets, and user-friendly prescription instructions. When customers can find the information they need effortlessly, it enhances their trust in the pharmacy's expertise.
  4. Marketing Content: Solid marketing content is essential to inform the community about the pharmacy's services and products. This content can include brochures, flyers, and online materials that highlight the pharmacy's offerings, such as prescription services, over-the-counter medications, health screenings, and wellness programs.
  5. Online Presence: In today's digital age, having a visually appealing and user-friendly website and social media presence is crucial. These platforms should showcase the pharmacy's services, staff credentials, customer reviews, and health-related articles. It allows the community to engage with the pharmacy online and reinforces its credibility.
  6. Customer Engagement: Visual design also plays a role in customer engagement. Pharmacies can use visually appealing displays and promotions to capture customers' attention and encourage them to explore the products and services offered. Engaging visuals can create a sense of community involvement.
  7. Trust and Credibility: Ultimately, a well-designed community pharmacy exudes trust and credibility. Patients are more likely to choose a pharmacy that appears professional, organized, and knowledgeable about their healthcare needs. Solid marketing content reinforces this image.
In conclusion, visual design and marketing content are essential tools for community pharmacies to establish themselves as trusted and credible healthcare destinations. A well-designed pharmacy with informative and visually appealing materials can attract and retain customers, fostering a strong sense of trust within the community.

TWIRx | Treating Gram-Negative Bacterial Infections with Thomas Lodise, PharmD, PhD08 Dec 202300:25:44
A new, real-world evidence study of patients with Gram-negative infections showed that early intervention with Fetroja® (cefiderocol) significantly reduced in-hospital all-cause mortality. This real-world evidence, drawn from a retrospective analysis of 275 seriously ill patients, emphasizes the critical importance of timely treatment.    The retrospective multicenter observational study showed earlier treatment resulted in a reduction in in-hospital all-cause mortality (IHACM) in patients with Gram-negative infections who previously received other antibiotics, including those with difficult-to-treat pathogens that were resistant to other antibiotics.   Here is a link to the press release with a summary of the results presented by Shionogi at ID Week in October.   We would be happy to arrange an interview with pharmacist Thomas Lodise, PharmD, PhD, Associate Professor, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, to delve deeper into these results. Dr. Lodise can discuss the implications of this study for hospital pharmacists as it sheds light on the potential clinical utility of Fetroja in the treatment of difficult-to-treat adult patients with culture-confirmed Gram-negative infections. Tom Lodise, PharmD, PhD, professor at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and clinical pharmacy specialist at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, New York.(pronounced low-deese not lo-dice) This will be a quick review of the interview topics, and any additional questions that you may have about the material.--You should expect to receive sample interview questions to help you guide the interview.--I’ve included a recent article in CONTAGION LIVE directed to the study that you’ll be addressing in the interview. Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment, cultivating self-awareness, and embracing a non-judgmental attitude. It's a powerful tool that can help you navigate the complexities of your career with grace and resilience. Here's how:
  1. Stress Reduction: Mindfulness techniques can reduce stress levels, helping you stay calm and composed even in high-pressure situations.
  2. Enhanced Focus: By training your mind to be present, you can improve your concentration and productivity.
  3. Improved Decision-Making: Mindfulness allows you to make better decisions by fostering clarity and reducing the influence of impulsive reactions.
  4. Increased Creativity: Embracing mindfulness can unlock your creative potential, enabling you to find innovative solutions to challenges.
  5. Work-Life Balance: Achieving a balance between your career and personal life becomes more attainable as mindfulness helps you set boundaries and prioritize self-care.
Dr. Luana Colloca, a physician-scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, calls this our “inner pharmacy.” Just expecting to feel better can cause the release of these substances. “Our mindset is so critical,” Colloca says, “because our thoughts are not independent from our bodies’ responses.” The placebo effect can be powerful. It can help with pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety, or nausea. But our inner pharmacy can’t treat everything. It can’t, for instance, make tumors go away, lower your cholesterol, or get rid of infections. https://newsinhealth.nih.gov/2023/01/powerful-placebo#:~:text=The%20placebo%20effect%20can%20be,or%20get%20rid%20of%20infections
