Ep. 270: Rye Coalition w/ Ralph Cuseglio14 Nov 202501:16:11

Rye Coalition came out of Jersey City in the early nineties and quickly built a reputation as one of the most fearless and inventive bands in the post-hardcore world. They toured with heavyweights like Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, and The (International) Noise Conspiracy, earned praise from outlets including Spin, Pitchfork, and The Village Voice, and worked with legendary producers Steve Albini and Dave Grohl. Their documentary "Rye Coalition: The Story of the Hard Luck 5" became a cult favorite, cementing their status as one of the most underrated but widely respected bands of their era. Loud, chaotic, swagger-filled, and always a little dangerous, they were the group other musicians whispered about as a secret influence. If you know, you know.

I got Ralph on the Zoom and this is what we chatted about:

  • John Hiltz
  • Gern Blandsten Records
  • What bands inspired their live show
  • Did their music stand for anything?
  • Recording with Steve Albini
  • recording with Dave Grohl
  • What did signing to Dreamworks do for the band
  • And a ton more

Be on the lookout for some old music of theirs to release in 2026 and follow their instagram.

Ep. 269: Sleepytime Trio w/ Drew Ringo24 Oct 202501:16:06

Sleepytime Trio formed in 1995 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, originally as a side project of Maximillian Colby. Known for their volatile, emotional sound and chaotic live shows, they quickly became a defining force in the late 90s post-hardcore scene, sharing stages with bands like Hot Water Music, Frodus, and Shotmaker. After a hiatus in 1998, members went on to form acts like Engine Down, Rah Bras, and Milemarker before reuniting to tour again. Their definitive discography, remixed by J. Robbins and remastered by TJ Lipple, showcases all their studio recordings and captures the raw energy that made them legendary.

In 2024, Solid Brass Records partnered with Sleepytime Trio and their longtime label, Lovitt Records, to work on a vinyl discography to memorialize this important band. The definitive Sleepytime Trio discography to date is packaged in a single pocket gatefold LP sleeve with complete lyrics. It also includes an 8-page zine/booklet featuring an extensive show list, behind-the-scenes notes, photos, and memories from friends of the band. There is a BONUS insert also included in this pressing only!

I got Drew on the Zoom and this is what we chat about:

  • 911
  • His thoughts on still touring
  • Fan tattoos
  • The meaning of 4 AM Friday
  • Their album artwork
  • Writing songs with no lyrics

Ep. 260: Day at the Fair w/ Robert J. Heiner30 May 202501:56:50

Day at the Fair was a New Jersey-based pop punk band that gained attention in the early 2000s with their emotionally charged lyrics and catchy, melodic hooks. Best known for their 2005 album The Rocking Chair Years, the band blended heartfelt storytelling with energetic, anthemic soundscapes. Though their time was brief, they left a lasting impression on fans of the Drive-Thru Records era.

Ep. 170: Elliott w/ Chris Higdon25 Mar 202201:34:52

Before we start, if you're company has a hard time explaining what it does you can hire me to do that in 60-90 seconds with an explainer animation. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more.

Elliott was formed in 1995. Their most notable LPs were U.S. Songs, False Cathedrals, and Song in the Air. 2000's False Cathedrals was a more polished affair than its predecessor, featuring vocal harmonies and more piano than US Songs. It was met with critical acclaim by a broad cross-section of the underground rock community.

Shortly after Song in the Air's release, Elliott announced their intention to break up. They completed final tours of Europe and the US, before disbanding in November 2003.

We tried getting Kevin on but for some reason, I couldn't hear his audio and we were pressed on time so we had to do the interview without him so sorry Kevin!

We had to take a 3-week break between the interview because Chris had parental responsibilities so it picks up in the middle. But I got him on the Skype and this what we chat about:

  • Playing Furnace fest in 2022
  • Revelation Records
  • 2 members quitting at the same time
  • not playing False Cathedrals the same way live as it was on the recording
  • The Toadies tour debacle
  • What were they like on stage
  • The Humble Beginnings story
  • What would have happened to the band if they had continued
  • The porn house

Before we start, if you're company has a hard time explaining what it does you can hire me to do that in 60-90 seconds with an explainer animation. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more.

Known for singer Harold's beautifully bespoke tenor vocals, Tampa, FL's Hankshaw (founded in 1994) played melodic indie rock- emo. The band saw releases on Network Sound, Doghouse Records, No Idea Records (among others), and tours with Hot Water Music, Elliott, Ann Beretta, and more.

I heard about these guys from my dude Casey Lee Morgan when my old band first traveled to FL and he put us up. Go check Casey's business Sparkway Smoke & Vapor shop in Bloomingdale and Netcong, NJ.

Ep. 168: Sicko Josh Rubin REPOST11 Mar 202201:21:16

Before we start, if you're company has a hard time explaining what it does you can hire me to do that in 60-90 seconds with an explainer animation. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more.

Sicko was an American rock group from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1991. Exceptionally, the three-piece pop-punk group maintained a constant membership for every recording as a band. This line-up was Denny Bartlett (guitar, bass, vocals), Ean Hernandez (guitar, bass, vocals), and Josh Rubin (drums, brother of Aaron Rubin from The Mr. T Experience). Sicko released four full-length albums and five 7″ eps as well as a retrospective CD with unreleased and rare material, a released demo and a tour video. They also appeared on approximately fourteen compilations on labels such as Lookout! Records and Liberation Records. They once exchanged covers with Cub. The vast majority of their recorded output was recorded by Kurt Bloch of The Fastbacks and released on Seattle-based punk label eMpTy Records. One EP and the retrospective CD were released on Mutant Pop Records. Three Sicko songs were featured on the Xbox game Project Gotham Racing 2 alongside artists like The Flaming Lips and Princess Superstar.

Ep. 166: Ann Beretta w/ Rob Huddleston18 Feb 202201:38:12

Before we start, if you're company has a hard time explaining what it does you can hire me to do that in 60-90 seconds with an explainer animation. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more.

Ann Beretta is a punk rock band from Richmond, Virginia. Formed in 1996, the band plays straightforward punk with small doses of rockabilly and country mixed into their sound.

They spent several years on tour playing with bands including Hot Water Music, ALL, the Bouncing Souls, Less Than Jake, and city-mates Avail. They were on Fueled by Ramen and Lookout! Records. In the fall of 2004, Ann Beretta disbanded until 2012 when they toured Europe and the UK in support of WIld, Young, and Free - an LP released exclusively in Europe by Gunnar Records and made up of demos and outtakes. In 2017 Ann Beretta released the album, Old Scars New Blood, a collection of re-recorded songs that spanned across the band's career representing each album previously released.

I reached out to Mr. Rob Huddleston to see if he'd like to chat, he said yes, and this is what we talk about:

  • The start of acoustic punk records
  • The origins of Rumbleseat
  • How that rougher vocal sound came about
  • What inspired Forever Family
  • How they first met Hot Water Music
  • American Steel

  • Fueled By Ramen
  • The upcoming Avail shows
  • And a ton more

Check out their new release "RISE". It's the first record of new material since 2003's Three Chord Revolution and following 2018's Old Scars New Blood; a collection of re-recorded songs from the band's catalog.

Ep. 165: Absolute Punk w/ Jason Tate11 Feb 202201:41:42

Before we start, if you're company has a hard time explaining what it does you can hire me to do that in 60-90 seconds with an explainer animation. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more.

AbsolutePunk was a website, online community, and alternative music news source founded by Jason Tate. It mainly focused on artists who were relatively unknown to mainstream audiences, but it was known to feature artists who have eventually achieved crossover success, including Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, New Found Glory, Taking Back Sunday, The Gaslight Anthem, Anberlin, Thrice, All Time Low, and a shit ton more. The primary musical genres of focus were emo and pop-punk, but other genres were included. On March 31, 2016, it was announced that founder Jason Tate would be re-acquiring AbsolutePunk from SpinMedia (the parent company of Buzznet) and the website would be shuttered and folded into Tate's new music and social platform, Chorus.fm

I reached out to Mr. Tate on Instagram, asked him to be interviewed and he was delighted. So I got him on the Skype and this is what we chatted about:

  • When We Were Young festival

  • Spin buying the website

Ep. 164: Baby Gopal w/ Alex Garcia-Rivera04 Feb 202201:21:37

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

Baby Gopal was fronted by Australian-born singer/guitarist Sri Kesava the band fused Hari Krishna dogma laced lyrics with a meld of hardcore and pop-punk to astonishing results. The music is endlessly catchy and Sri's beautiful voice will keep you captivated like a siren from wire to wire. This amazing album was sadly overlooked in 1996 because of another similar "girl power" band that was already ripping up the charts. You might have heard of them, No Doubt anyone? They later signed to Tommy Boy in 1998 before breaking up shortly thereafter.

Shot out to Casey Iodine for the intro

I got Alex on the Skype and this is what we chat about:

  • Playing in Kingpin
  • Playing in Shelter
  • How he got involved in Baby Gopal
  • How was it seen that Shelter made money off the band

  • Out of Band Experience Stickers in Boston
  • American Nightmare

  • Touring with them in 2022

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

Thick Records was formed in 1994 by Detroit native Zak Einstein, who started the label when he relocated to Chicago after graduating from Michigan State University. Early releases include albums from Chicago ska-punkers The Blue Meanies, Alton, IL's Judge Nothing, Seattle's grunge rockers Truly, and the Omaha-based Commander Venus. Blue Meanies singer Billy Spunke joined Einstein and signed multiple Chicago punk rock artists including The Tossers, The Arrivals, and The Methadones. The label also released several compilations documenting Chicago rock and punk music. The compilations included 2000's Magnetic Curses: A Chicago Punk Rock Compilation, which included music from Gaza Strippers, Alkaline Trio, and Pegboy. Oil: Chicago Punk Refined, a 2003 release from the label, included tracks from nineteen Chicago-area punk acts, including Rise Against, The Lawrence Arms, The Tossers, Plain White T's, Bob Nanna, and Local H.

In 2004 Einstein moved the label to Los Angeles. The last label releases came in 2007 with CDs from The Brokedowns and Seven Storey Mountain.

Gob's relentless touring and fun-loving attitude earned them a loyal fanbase and a lasting spot in Canada's punk legacy.

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

From the suburbs of East LA, four Mexican American kids came together in 2001 to form the band Audio Karate and developed a unique sound that drew from their many influences such as Descendents and Jawbreaker. Their unique mix of melodic and emotional punk rock helped them develop a big fan base and quickly caught the attention of Kung Fu Records, who signed them in 2001 alongside bands like Blink-182 and Tsunami Bomb. Their blend of melodies and hooks set them apart, making it difficult to place them in any one genre. The band has mastered the art of writing infectiously catchy songs with deeply personal lyrics, while still remaining upbeat and fun.

They recently signed to Iodine Recordings and will be releasing a new LP this January called ¡OTRA! that features rare and unreleased music spanning the band's career, produced by Bill Stevenson of the Descendents and Trever Keith of Face to Face.

Audio Karate are also working on new music that will be released on Iodine later in 2022, and the band is gearing up for some music festivals and regional tours.

Thank you Casey Iodine for the intro to Jason whom I got on the Skype and this is what we chat about:

  • Releasing old material on Iodine Recordings
  • Having shows get shot up by local gangs
  • 8-hour practices
  • Their love for No Knife
  • Kris Roe's assistance in getting them on Kung Fu Records
  • Trevor Keith producing their record
  • Recording with Bill Stephenson
  • Holding their ground on artwork and stage show

Ep. 158: The Blue Meanies w/ Billy Spunke03 Dec 202101:28:52

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

The Blue Meanies made their recording debut in 1991 with the release of their first single, "Grandma Shampoo". Although their personnel was continuously changing, The Blue Meanies' sound would remain consistent throughout their first four albums.

The band signed with MCA Records towards the end of the commercially successful third wave of ska.

By this time, a total of twenty-two musicians had passed through the band since their formation, including Jay Vance, as a bass player, who went on to form the one-man metal band Captured! By Robots. Their sixth full-length album, The Post Wave, released in late 2000 on MCA Records, was the most musically different from their other five albums. In 2001, the band regained the rights to The Post Wave and reissued it on Thick Records, their original record label. The band ceased touring, though they never issued an official break-up statement.

Thank you Sean Dolan for giving me Billy's info.

Weston is a punk rock band hailing from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1990, they took their name from singer Dave Weston's family, since his parents allowed them to practice in their basement. The band never found mainstream success but their energetic and irreverent live shows earned them legendary status amongst their peers as well as their fans. Following their major-label debut, the band split up. It was announced on October 17, 2006, that Weston would be reuniting for three shows in late December. This led to even more reunion shows in the following years and a live album released in December 2009.

Here's what Chuck and I talk about:

  • Not missing playing late at night
  • Helping a friend run away from home
  • Starting off writing harder sounding songs
  • Getting chased by the singer of Ignite with fireworks
  • The poop in the shower story

American Steel is an influential punk rock band from Oakland, California, formed in 1995 by Rory Henderson and Ryan Massey. Known for blending melodic punk with elements of hardcore and folk influences, the group released notable albums like "Rogue's March" and "Jagged Thoughts" on Lookout! Records before moving to Fat Wreck Chords for later releases. After a hiatus in the early 2000s, during which members formed the band Communiqué, American Steel reunited in 2007 and continued to be recognized for their thoughtful lyrics and distinctive vocal harmonies. Their music is characterized by catchy hooks, energetic performances, and a sound that evolved from raw punk to more polished rock while maintaining their emotional intensity and political consciousness.

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

Kill Your Idols was an American hardcore punk band from New York, active from 1995 through 2007 and were signed to SideOneDummy Records. The band released many 7" EPs, splits with other bands (including Full Speed Ahead, Fisticuffs, Voorhees, Good Riddance, and Poison Idea), compilation tracks, and full-length LPs in their 11-year run. Most of their records were released on vinyl as well as compact disc. They cite Poison Idea, Negative Approach, Sheer Terror, Agnostic Front, Minor Threat, Warzone, Sick of It All, and 7 Seconds as some of their influences. KYI was very fast and had a loud, dirty, dual guitar sound with shouted vocals. They employed hints of melody in their song structure. Although they derived many of their influences from California and D.C. style hardcore, they were considered a New York hardcore band.

I got Andy West on the Skype and this is what we chat about:

  • Starting off as a Dead Head
  • Was he a songwriter prior to starting the band
  • Who started getting their tattoos
  • What does he think about playing Long Island
  • Playing every small town that they could
  • Dealing with depression
  • Always writing a ton of songs
  • What are his thoughts on their new songs
  • Their last show when they broke up
  • The Webster Hall show
  • And a ton more

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

Fiddler Records was a small independent record label serving as the launchpad for several artists seminal to the pop, punk and emo genres. Starting as the brainchild of 16-year-old entrepreneur Amy Fleisher Madden in 1996, the label became well known for its early releases from marquee artists Dashboard Confessional and New Found Glory. Over the course of 10 years, Fiddler Records developed a steady roster of successful artists such as The Bled, The Higher, Recover, Juliette & The Licks, Name Taken and Classic Case. You can purchase some of their stuff at www.fiddlerrecords.com

I reached out to Amy last year but due to Covid it took us a while to make this happen. But, I finally got her on the SKYPE and this is what we talk about:

  • Why re-releasing records sometimes doesn't work
  • how did she fund her first releases
  • What would she document if she could go back in time
  • Did she have other labels to bounce ideas off of?
  • The band Milkshed
  • The reasoning behind The Shortest Distance: A South Florida Compilation
  • why selling band merch now can be a giant pain in the ass
  • Dashboard Confessional
  • the band Recover

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

The Stryder was an American band hailing from Long Island, New York. The band was formed by Peter Toh and Scottie Redix in 1999 after their previous project, Yearly, disbanded following the departure of bassist Eben D'amico, who left to join Saves the Day. They added a vocalist and bassist, John Johansen and Nick Wendel respectively. They were on Elkion Records and then Equal Vision Records. The band toured extensively and began writing new material in 2001. They added former Glassjaw drummer Durijah Lang, and moved Scottie Redix to guitar and backing vocals. In mid-2001 the band parted ways with vocalist John Johansen.  You'll learn about the rest in the interview.

There's a fire alarm dying in the background the whole time and I tried my best to kill it as much as possible but it creeps through. But you'll hear odd cuts in what Scottie's saying. That's where I'm slicing the audio.

Thank you to Chris Payne for the intro to Scottie who I got on the Skype and this is what we chat about:

  • Being friends with and a fan of Glassjaw
  • Brand New
  • What local drummers influenced him
  • Yearly
  • Eben's personality and how it influenced Saves The Day
  • Going from drums to guitar
  • 911 changing music
  • Their relationship with Saves the Day
  • What was their relationship like being on Equalvision
  • At Your Funeral being about them

Garrison was a post-hardcore/punk band based in Boston, Massachusetts from 1996-2004. Ed McNamara and Joe Grillo shared lead vocal, guitar, and songwriting duties. In their eight years, Garrison released two full-length albums, both on Revelation Records, as well as three EPs, two split EPs, and one early single released as a 7" vinyl record. After officially disbanding in 2004, members of Garrison went on to play with Pointillist, Instruction, Fires, The Fly Seville, Gay for Johnny Depp, Campaign for Real-Time, The Rise Park, Placer, and Kill Verona.

Throughout their career spanning nearly three decades, The Aquabats have maintained a dedicated cult following while continuing to release albums and perform their energetic, family-friendly shows.

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

Jump Start Records was born in a college dorm room first as a paper mailorder catalog and zine that quickly evolved into a vinyl 7″ release with Montreal's The Planet Smashers. Twenty years and over 100 releases later, they're still here, for better or for worse, fighting the good fight.

While the focus and drive of the label has shifted greatly over the years, one thing has stayed true and that's a personal connection with the music and a desire to work with their friends releasing music that they love. Times are tough, and being an independent record label in the year 2017 isn't easy; getting people to pay attention to a small record label run out of a suburban Philadelphia basement is no easy task, but they hope you enjoy what you find as much as they enjoy introducing the world to bands and music they think people ought to know.

They don't give a fuck what bands you've played with, who you recorded with, or how many followers you have on social media. If they like it, they like it, and there's not much else to say. It doesn't matter if it's punk, hardcore, ska, soul, hip-hop, or jazz, when the record needle hits you know it when you hear it.

Shout out to Adam Fowler of the Overdrives for the intro to Jeremy.

Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you've been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever.

Against All Authority was founded in Florida in 1992. A strong engagement in political and social issues is clearly evident in their lyrics. The band maintains a fierce DIY stance influenced by the approach of the Dead Kennedys and Subhumans. Early in their career, the band decided to book concerts, make recordings and even produce band T-shirts on their own. Their first release was a 7" called "Above The Law" in 1994. Later they signed to independent label Hopeless Records, becoming one of their major bands. In addition to touring and recording, the band is frequently involved in demonstrations and social projects. They have also influenced a number of other bands.

I got Joe on the Skype and this is what we talk about:

  • The punk rock museum
  • Being a band from Miami, FL
  • Hurricane Andrew's impact on the band
  • The Crumbs
  • Farout Records
  • Who did their artwork

Bluechannel was around for that whole mid-90s era but this newest release, This As A Drawing, was written in  2008 and shows that it stuck to its roots and remained gritty and punky while having more sophisticated lyrics and songwriting structures. The obvious comparisons were Samiam and The Get Up Kids but, and I say this a lot, it's more likely that they shared influences rather than being directly influential on Bluechannel.
