Tip of the Week-Habit Stacking01 Jan 202400:15:20

We’re kicking off 2024 talking about one of my favorite topics: Habit Stacking.

James Clear talks about Habit Stacking in his best selling book, Atomic Habits.

Essentially you take something you are already doing, and add the new desired habit on top of the existing habit. The correlation between time and/or location alerts your brain to trigger the new habit. For example: “Each time I go upstairs, I bring up whatever is in the basket” or “every night after dinner I run the dishwasher.”By building on an existing habit or routine, allows your brain to adopt the new habit easier than if you were to try to create the habit from scratch.

If you’re looking to create some healthy habits in 2024 ,I’ve outlined 5 different places for you to use as a jumping off point:
Remember to start small and be specific. The key to successful habit stacking is incremental change.
2024 we’re here for ya!

Tip of the Week-Christmas Episode Relax, Reset, and Recharge25 Dec 202300:05:28
Hi Friends,

Today's episode drops on Christmas Morning-so a very Merry Christmas to all of those who celebrate! And for those who do not, I hope you’re able to spend time with your loved ones.

I’ve been fortunate that I’ve always been able to take the week between Christmas and New Years as a time to relax, reset, and recharge.

It’s a time for me to loosen the reins of routines, and for me that looks like chilling in my pjs, drinking the extra cup of coffee, going for a long meandering walk, or watching a movie during the day.

I have a tendency to move into goal setting and planning so it requires a level of intentionality and giving myself permission to take my foot off the gas. and simply be present.

My tip for you today is to join me in being present this week. There’s plenty of time to think about what lies ahead for 2024, but for today and the remaining week of 2023, let’s focus on remembering the true meaning of Christmas.

Tip of the Week-Hostess Gifts11 Dec 202300:09:43
Hi Friends,

Today’s tip is how to simplify hostess gifts. The month of December is often filled with holiday gatherings and parties. Whether you are going to a Sunday afternoon cookie exchange, or holiday drinks at your neighbors, it’s always a good idea to have quick gifts on hand-especially for impromptu get-togethers!

Below are 3 things that I keep on hand during the holiday season that make for easy hostess gifts:

  • Bottles of Wine-let’s be honest, I usually have these on hand anyway, but especially during the holidays I like to have extra bottles of wine or prosecco on hand so that I am not walking into someone’s home empty handed.

  • Candles-If your host/hostess is not a drinker, Candles make for an easy and inexpensive gift. I usually make a homegoods run and stock up on some festive scented candles in fun jars and they are always a huge hit!

  • Desserts-I love bringing a tray of chocolate covered pretzels or truffles from our local chocolatier. Not only am I supporting a local business, but they are delicious! *to add an extra touch, grab an inexpensive festive plate/platter to display the chocolates. Once the treats are finished, the hostess is left with a lovely holiday plate to use.

Happy Holidays!

During our conversation we talked about:
  • Some of the leading causes of sleep disruption
  • The cycles of sleep and stress
  • How technology impacts our brain's ability to relax
  • Different strategies to create healthy sleep habits

There was so much great information during this interview, I had to go back and re-listen!

Tip of the Week-Gifting Budget04 Dec 202300:19:58
Happy December Folks!

We’re kicking off December with a simple tip about budgeting for the holidays.

There is no denying that it’s simpler than ever before to spend money. Where we used to have to drive to a store, take out cash and make an in-person transaction, has morphed into a convenience of shopping from your couch in your pjs with a click of a button.

As much as I personally love that, it’s also super easy to overspend without even realizing it, which is why I always create a separate holiday budget.

Whether you are an aspiring minimalist who trades physical gifts for experiences, or you are someone who still enjoys coming down on Christmas morning to houseful of gifts to unwrap, we are still spending money.

  • Why she puts her Christmas tree up in December
  • Her fav Taylor Swift Song
  • Why parenting is harder than it looks

In the throes of hectic schedules, holiday gatherings, and general feelings of overwhelm, just remember that life isn’t perfect, and the best thing you can do is surround yourself with people who continually remind you that you’re not crazy even when you feel like you are!

Tip of the Week-Organize Your Linen Closet20 Nov 202300:13:05
Hi Friends,

As someone who has a houseful of people during Thanksgiving and Christmas I’ve made it a practice to do a deep dive in the linen closet each November.
Here’s a quick cheat sheet to how I approach organizing my linen closet:
  • Sheets- A quick tip to making any closet appear organized is using baskets.I hate folding sheets-especially fitted sheets, so I use baskets with pretty labels to corral our sheets and hide any imperfections with my folding technique.
    • My rule of thumb is 2 sets per bed -one that’s on your bed and one spare.

BTW, If your sheets have seen better days, I love my new sheets from American Blossom Linens! They are made without any harsh chemicals, have deep pockets and get softer with every wash!

  • Towels-Get rid of anything that frayed, torn or worn out. Animal Shelters are always looking for old linens, blankets and towels for the animals!

  • My rule of thumb is approx 4 bath towels per person, 2-4 hand towels per person, and 6-8 washcloths per person.

  • Toiletries-It’s always good to have extra toiletries on hand like toothbrushes, razors, shampoo, conditioner, lotions. Not to mention things like tylenol, motrin, antacids, benadryl, and other popular over the counter remedies that may come in handy!

  • Rule of thumb: before you stock up, make sure you inventory your current stash and throw out anything that is expired.

Even if you're not hosting any overnight guests during the holidays, it’s still a good time to inventory your linen closet and check this area off of your list!

XOXO-
Laurie

Tip of the Week-Identity Theft13 Nov 202300:13:08
In today's digital world, keeping your identity safe is super important. Here are three top ways to do it:

1. Keep Your Info Secure:
  • Strong Passwords: Make unique and strong passwords for your accounts. Think letters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager to handle the heavy lifting.
  • Two-Factor Authentication: Add an extra layer of security with 2FA. It asks for a second form of verification, like a code sent to your phone.
  • Guard Your Docs: Keep sensitive stuff like passports and financial papers safe. Shred or trash any old docs with personal info.

2. Keep an Eye on Your Money:
  • Check Your Statements: Look through your bank and card statements often for any fishy transactions.
  • Credit Report Check: Grab your free credit reports yearly to spot any red flags. Think about credit monitoring for extra security.
  • Freeze Your Credit: Lock down your credit report to make it tougher for ID thieves to open new accounts.

3. Protect Your Online Presence:
  • Watch What You Share: Be careful about sharing personal info online, especially on social media.
  • Dodge Phishing: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading unknown files.
  • Secure Wi-Fi and Updates: Use secure Wi-Fi and always update your software to fix any security holes.
Also, consider identity theft protection services for added security. If you suspect ID theft, report it ASAP to the right peeps to limit the damage. Stay safe out there!

Tip of the Week-Micro vs. Macro Organizing06 Nov 202300:10:51
Hi Friends,

Today we’re talking about Micro Vs. Macro Organizing.Micro and macro organizing refer to two different levels of organization within various contexts and both serve a specific purpose- below is a description and examples of each:
  • Micro Organizing: (how)
    • Micro organizing focuses on the smaller, more detailed aspects of an organization or system. It involves managing individual components, processes, or elements within the larger framework.
    • This level of organization often deals with day-to-day operations, tasks, and interaction.
    • Examples of micro organizing at home: decluttering contents of a drawer, shelf, or cabinet
    • Micro Organizing can also include hanging up your keys, loading or unloading the dishwasher, or putting away laundry
    • Examples of micro organizing in a business: might involve managing individual projects, teams, or specific operational processes.
  • Macro Organizing: (why)
    • Macro organizing focuses on the larger, more systemic aspects of an organization or system. It involves designing and managing the overarching structures, strategies, and principles that guide the entire entity.
    • This level of organization often deals with long-term planning, vision and purpose.
    • Examples of macro organizing at home: how do we want our garage to serve us? What are the pain points of our kitchen and what problems do we need solved?
    • It can also be, we need to figure out how to build more margin in our weekends, or find time to meal prep, or exercise.
    • Examples of macro organizing in various contexts:
      • In a business, macro organizing could refer to creating the company's strategic plan, setting corporate goals, and establishing high-level policies and procedures.
In summary, micro organizing focuses on the smaller, more detailed aspects, while macro organizing deals with the larger, systemic aspects and big picture. Both types of organizing are essential and they often complement each other in achieving your goals and objectives.

Tip of the Week-Halloween Decor30 Oct 202300:10:59
Hey there, fellow Halloween enthusiasts! Today, I want to chat about something near and dear to my heart – organizing Halloween decorations. Over the years, my family and I have gathered quite a spooky collection, but it's essential to keep things in check to avoid clutter.

As Halloween wraps up, it's the perfect time to assess your decorations. Ask yourself if you still love them and if they hold sentimental value. If not, consider letting go or replacing them with items that bring joy. Remember, storage space is limited, so think twice before adding more. If you can spare the room, that's great; if not, find a new home for your decor without overloading your space.
It's all about being mindful of your available space and setting boundaries. Consider if you genuinely want and use each decoration. If not, consider donating or making room for new pieces.

We'd love for you to join our Facebook group, subscribe for exclusive content, and watch for our spookily decorated house on social media!

Wishing you a spooktacular Halloween and reminding you to stay safe during trick-or-treating. We've got exciting plans for the next episode, so please share, subscribe, leave a review, and visit our website for more organizing resources. Remember, staying organized during the holidays is possible, and together, we'll tackle it all. Stay tuned for more episodes filled with helpful tips on living an organized life.

Tip of the Week-Ditch Old Mugs23 Oct 202300:14:00
Today, we're tackling a common issue that plagues us all: the ever-expanding mug collection. Mugs seem to breed like rabbits in our cupboards, don't they? They're often packed with sentimental value or showcase quirky designs that are hard to part with.

Here are some ways to narrow down your mug collection:

Use the golden “one-row rule.” Unless you’re running a tea party for a small army, aim to squeeze 12 to 15 mugs onto a single shelf without piling them up.

The chipped and worn ones might find a better home through donation if they’re no longer your cup of tea (pun intended).

Seasonal mugs- keep those separately, and when the time comes, temporarily swap them in while respecting the one row rule.

Of course, organizing is as personal as your coffee order, so adapt it to your liking. And while you’re on that “first sip feeling,” share this episode with friends and family.

Tip of the Week-Clean Your Fridge16 Oct 202300:18:51
Today's tip: the fridge clean-out. Every week, it's as simple as tossing expired items and giving those surfaces a good wipe-down. Carve out an hour to empty, clean, and reorganize your fridge for a deeper cleanse. Take the time to check those expiration dates as you go. It's worth it.

Consider using turntables or bins to streamline condiments, and remember to label containers for easy identification. And remember, zoning your fridge makes life a lot easier—group similar items together for a more organized space.

Regular deep cleans, around four times a year, will keep your fridge fresh and organized. It's a chance to take inventory, swap out that baking soda to keep odors at bay and maintain a well-organized space.

After cleaning, quickly check for expired items and make a shopping list. Clean up any spills or drips to keep your fridge looking its best. And speaking of keeping things tidy, labeling is your best friend. Use labels on shelves, drawers, and containers to keep everything in its place.

If your fridge is due for some TLC, take the time to organize it. It's a simple path to a more organized life. If you enjoyed this episode, share it with a friend, and please consider leaving us a review. Your support means the world. Thanks for tuning in!

Tip of the Week-Donate Old Books09 Oct 202300:13:49
Today's tip is all about tackling that mountain of old books. We've all got them, right? Those books that have sentimental value or an "I'll read it someday" mentality. But it's time to make some tough decisions.

First, ask yourself if the book is still relevant. Let it go if it's a technology book from the Stone Age or a textbook from your college days. Information evolves, and so should your bookshelf.
Next up, be honest about whether you'll ever read those books you've been collecting. We've all been there—buying with good intentions, but they gather dust. Consider letting them find new homes if you'll unlikely dive into them.

Now, what to do with these books? Donating is a noble path. Libraries, schools, and even your local doctor's office can often use them. You might also find second-hand bookstores that accept donations, but check their criteria first.

Decluttering isn't a one-time gig; it's a way of life. Spice it up by hosting a book swap with friends. Declutter while bonding over books, and it's a win-win! Plus, you might discover some hidden gems in your pals' collections.

And remember, supporting fellow authors is a beautiful thing. Swapping books can be an eco-friendly alternative to buying new ones. I once traded a stack of Garfield books with a friend who adored the lasagna-loving cat—no cost involved.

Of course, if books are left after the swap, have a plan B. Arrange for a donation pickup or take them to a donation center. The goal is to share knowledge, connect, and declutter.

That's it for today's tip! Declutter those old books and make room for new adventures.

Time and The Enneagram with Christa Hardin | Ep 35605 Oct 202300:54:18
Special shout out to our sponsor for today's episode: MYLIO PHOTOS. A safe, simple and practical platform for storing all of your digital photos and more! Visit mylio.com/TOL to create your free account!

Today we are wrapping up our series about the 5 Clutter Pitfalls with the one thing we never seem to have enough of…TIME.I invited my friend Christa Hardin to join me for this one because of her unique perspective of how she uses the enneagram with couples.

Christa hosts the popular Enneagram + Marriage podcast, and has helped thousands of couples find refreshment, joy, balance, and connection together.I know first hand that although we all have access to the same 24 hours, how we choose to spend it looks different for each of us-which often results in a breakdown of communication, frustration and even resentment.

For many, this disconnect shows up as CLUTTER.

During our conversation, Christa and I talked about:
  • Why couples are often talking about the same things, but communicate differently
  • How each of the 9 types views TIME differently
  • The importance of articulating shared goals and painting a picture what that looks like
One of the biggest takeaways from learning about The Enneagram, and specifically this series, is that we often assume that everyone views the world the way we do-but they don’t.

Our methods may be different and that’s ok! I hope this series has shown you that there is a path for all of us, to reduce the clutter that stands in the way-regardless of our clutter pitfalls.

The Enneagram continues to prove as a powerful tool to help create conversations about how we think, feel and act. Having that shared language helps us communicate where we are struggling so that others can offer a lifeline for support.

If you want to begin living an organized life filled with peace, calm, and connection, we have a bunch of resources to help you get there! Click HERE to learn more.

XOXO-Laurie

Tip of the Week-Digitize Old Videos02 Oct 202300:07:50
Hi Friends,

Let's dive right into today's tip—it's more relevant than you might think, especially with the holidays approaching. Today, we're talking about digitizing old videos, those VHS tapes or DVDs packed with cherished memories.

Here's the deal: Many of us no longer have the means to play these old tapes, and finding a conversion service can be tricky. My recommendation? Find a local photo shop that offers in-house conversion. This way, you reduce the risk of mailing your personal videos, and you get immediate access to the digital files.

Apart from being a fun project, it makes a unique gift, especially for aging parents. By making their old videos accessible on their devices, you declutter their digital lives and preserve memories for future generations.

Tip of the Week- Renew Passports25 Sep 202300:10:22
Today, I thought I'd share a little life hack - keep an eye on your passport expiration date!
It's so easy to overlook, right? One day you're planning a big trip, the next you're scrambling to renew your passport. I've seen it cause some real headaches for my clients.

Think of your passport as a safety net. No travel plans right now? Doesn't matter. Life loves to throw curveballs and that passport might come in handy.

Here's a fun fact: some countries won't let you in if your passport expires within six months. So, it's not just about renewing before your trip, but way ahead of time.

Finally, give your passport the respect it deserves! Chucking it in a kitchen drawer? Big no-no. Keep it safe—you never know when you'll need it. Happy traveling!

Tip of the Week-Centralize Passwords18 Sep 202300:13:06
Hey there, and welcome back to "This Organized Life"! I'm absolutely thrilled to have you joining us for another episode. First off, I want to extend a massive thank you for your continuous support. It's mind-blowing to witness the growth of our show, and we're truly grateful for you being part of this incredible organizing journey.

Whether it's Netflix, your email, or work-related accounts, password chaos is frustrating. But fear not, we've got a solution: centralize your password management. No more jotting down passwords on paper or digging through old notebooks. Instead, go digital with password management apps or tools like Google Sheets. These not only keep your passwords secure but also offer the convenience of access from anywhere with an internet connection. Plus, sharing passwords becomes a breeze!

Remember, update your password list regularly for accuracy. Instead of hitting "forgot password," maintaining an organized system will save you heaps of time and frustration.

Tip of the Week- Throw Away Empty Boxes11 Sep 202300:13:02
Hey friends,

In our last episode, we tackled the thrilling topic of updating insurance info (I know, riveting stuff!). Today, we're talking about something that might be lurking in your home – empty boxes. Now, we've all been there, right? Holding on to shoe boxes, luxury jewelry boxes, and goodness knows what else, just because they look nice or make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

But here's the deal: these empty boxes are like little emotional clutter bombs.

So, I'm challenging you, to take a look around your place and really evaluate those empty boxes. Sure, repurposing is great, but what about those boxes from big-ticket purchases? You know, the ones that make you think, "What if I need to return this?" or "What if something bad happens?"Well, here's my take on it. If you haven't needed that box in the past 60-90 days, it's time to let it go. Trust me, the world won't come crashing down, promise!

And if you're not quite ready to say goodbye, set a time limit to make the parting a bit less painful.

Empty boxes, they're just placeholders from the past, and they're taking up precious space in your home.

And don’t forget about our Free Webinar on September 20th! There’s still time to secure your spot! Register here.

Here are some policies that should be reviewed annually:
1. Home Insurance
2. Auto Insurance
3. Life Insurance
4. Renter's Insurance

The key takeaway is to prevent being caught off guard during a crisis with outdated or inadequate coverage. In today's digital age, accessing and updating your policies is convenient and easier than ever. So, take a moment to ensure your insurance is current and suits your current circumstances.

Tip of the Week-Choose Your Hard28 Aug 202300:07:49
Hi Friends,

Today, I'm diving into the concept of choosing your hard and how it plays a role in every corner of our lives, even organization. Let's talk about those tempting shortcuts and how they might seem like a breeze now, but trust me, they often lead to more hassle down the road.Think about it – polishing off that bowl of ice cream might bring instant joy, but the health aftermath? Not so great. Same goes for leaving those videos unsorted – it's a headache to locate them later. So, what's the key? It's all about the bigger picture.I'm really putting emphasis on the long game. Sure, it might mean some extra elbow grease now – like making that bed or resisting those impulse buys. But believe me, this groundwork paves the way for a simpler, more serene life later on. It's like choosing a challenging trail that prevents chaos further down.Remember this: Choose your hard, make those intentional choices that declutter your life.

Laurie

Tip of the Week-Selective Minimalism21 Aug 202300:13:27
Before we get started a quick reminder: We have an upcoming FREE webinar on Sept 20th called 5 Ways to Make Money as a Professional Organizer. Spots are limited, so make sure you sign up (even if you can’t make the live event) we’ll be sending out the replay, but you MUST be registered first! Now on to the show!

Today, we're diving headfirst into the fascinating concept of selective minimalism.

Let's set the record straight from the get-go: while minimalism has taken the world by storm, you don't need to go all Marie Kondo to rock an organized life. It's about finding your own rhythm, and that's what we're about to explore together. As the years have gracefully passed me by, I've found myself drawn towards simplicity, eager to untangle my physical surroundings to free up space in my mind. And guess what? You can do it too, in your own unique way!

So, here's the scoop: I'm here to encourage you to hop on the selective minimalism train. It's like minimalism's cool cousin, and it's all about focusing on areas of your life you'd like to simplify. Maybe it's your closet, your footwear collection, or even your trove of housewares. The trick is to pinpoint specific categories within these realms and gradually pare them down.

Let's declutter the items that have overstayed their welcome – think old kitchen gadgets, snarled cords, ancient electronics, and those gardening supplies that have seen better days.

But here's where the magic truly happens: as you embark on this journey of selective minimalism in one area of your life, notice how it ripples through other aspects. Trust me, that tidy closet might just lead to a clearer mind and a more organized day-to-day.

I'm all ears for your success stories! Share your selective minimalism tales and give us a shout-out on social media.

XOXO-
Laurie

Slowing Down with Stephanie O'Dea | Ep 34917 Aug 202300:59:13
Hi Friends!

Joining me today is a New York Times best-selling author of 10 books and host of the Slow Living podcast, Stephanie O’Dea. I invited her on the show to talk about what it means to SLOW Down (you’d think it's simple, but we all know how hard it can be to put it into practice!)

During our conversation Stephanie shares how she transitioned from “The Crock Pot Lady” where she built a brand and business sharing crock pot recipes, to now teaching people how to slow down in their everyday lives.

While society is promoting bigger, better, newer, faster, Stephanie is advocating for a slower more intentional way of living.

She walks us through her SLOW acronym which stands for “SIMPLY LOOK ONLY WITHIN.”
Her Peace Pyramid covers 5 areas that we all need to achieve peace in our lives:
  • Time Management
  • Health
  • Finances
  • Organization
  • Relationships

Stephanie has a ton of resources on her website including a daily worksheet with guided prompts to help you intentionally slow down where you need it most. Make sure to check out the links in our show notes for everything mentioned in today’s episode.

Laurie

Tip of The Week-Declutter Your Computer14 Aug 202300:13:40
On today's tip of the week, it's important for you to declutter your digital spaces, specifically your computer. Let me emphasize the significance of digital detoxing in reducing invisible clutter and improving ease of retrieval for you.

Let's start with the first tip: delete old files. You've probably been using the same computer for a while, which means there are likely unnecessary files that can be deleted. Just like decluttering a physical space, consider when you last accessed those files and if you truly need them.

Furthermore, take a look at old drafts or multiple versions of files and feel free to delete them to free up storage. If you have larger files, especially related to video content, I recommend moving them to cloud-based platforms like Dropbox or Google Drive. This will help you create more space on your computer.

To simplify your digital life, it's crucial for you to declutter your inbox as well. Get rid of old files, unread emails, notifications, and emails from sources that are no longer relevant. By doing so, you'll create a more organized and manageable digital space tailored to your needs.
