| TIYA After Dark Preview — Blackmetalpalooza with Jetski | 22 Sep 2026 | 00:12:49 | |
This is a preview of this week's bonus episode. Subscribe to TIYA After Dark on Patreon to support This Is Your Afterlife & get all bonus episodes for $5 a month: patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife. Longtime listeners know my musical explorations have led me to black metal in recent years, but this is the first bonus episode I've dedicated to the fascinating extreme metal subgenre. My guest is Ian Ostaszewski aka Jetski. I've been following Ian's own black metal deep dive on the Jetski Twitter, where he has been posting a new black metal album he loves seemingly every other day. This is just two music dorks dorkin' out about their current musical obsessions. Welcome to Blackmetalpalooza. We talk about: fun evil, going down musical rabbit holes, art about cruelty, corpse paint, Black Metal Rainbows, unsavory guys, found footage horror, which of the big five Incubus singles are black metal. For a list of the albums we reference in this episode, subscribe to TIYA After Dark and read the show notes on Patreon! | Two More Minutes of "Purple Rain" with Hanif Abdurraqib | 15 Sep 2026 | 01:41:08
This is an all-time great episode of This Is Your Afterlife, the entry point I'll give to TIYA newcomers going forward. Poet, essayist, cultural critic, Ohioan, and MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient Hanif Abdurraqib explores death, loss, grief, awe, and even heaven so deeply in his work that I had to rephrase the show's tentpole questions for this conversation. The result is a dream episode with a new metaphor for the afterlife I can't stop thinking about. Hanif has a way with images that keep you thinking. We talk about: birds, aboutness as myth, talking to Martin Scorsese about The Last Waltz, not wanting war criminals in your heaven neighborhood, what Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchison taught him about "sad songs," making a city yours, checking in with people about the condition of their heart. | PATREON PREVIEW — TIYA After Dark: Mid-Life Crisis Tier List with Drennen Quinn | 09 Sep 2026 | 00:05:56
This is a preview of this week's bonus episode. Subscribe to TIYA After Dark on Patreon to support This Is Your Afterlife & get all bonus episodes for $5 a month: patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife. I turned 42 last week, which is honestly the closest to middle age I've ever been. I decided to have fun with it and do some CONTENT CREATION by making a tier list with my buddy, TIYA After Dark regular Drennen Quinn. I created tiers based on the Afterlife Power Rankings, and we slotted in as many standard mid-life crises as we could, plus a few super specific ones. You can see the final list on Patreon, but good luck guessing what any of it means without listening to the episode! | Utmost Worst with Tom Krell (How to Dress Well) | 01 Sep 2026 | 01:23:28
"There is nothing theorizable or interesting about death," Tom Krell says 30 minutes into his appearance on my podcast about death. He's speaking precisely. By "death," he means what he's learned of it from watching those close to him die. The annihilation of self. The finality of it. What he's not doing is dismissing the topic. Tom earned his PhD in philosophy, metaphysics specifically, so it makes sense he's intentional and unsparing with his words. But he also makes this beautiful music. Under the name How to Dress Well, his art-damaged R&B soundtracked my bike rides the summer before my coma in 2014. Since then, his music has grown deeper and more promiscuous. He incorporates metal, noise, and field recordings on tracks with lyrics about the hegemony of realism and intergenerational trauma. But it's all wrapped around a spine of primal, haunting melody. In our conversation, Tom tells me how important it is for him to use direct language to discuss philosophical ideas. And that is what he's doing with his music. He piles layers of sound and meaning onto melodies to bury the ideas and feelings deep. I'm still listening. This episode also includes the fun of Tom claiming Hegel, Heidegger, and Marx are easy to grasp and the rare TIYA exclusive! Here it is: Tom plans to call the new How to Dress Well album "Glow Palimpsest No Hell." We talk about: working on philosophy in piecemeal while touring, writing about your own work, Gaspar Noe's Climax, exoteric vs. esoteric, his version of the "terribly stupid" movie Memento, consciousness as Hegelian "picture thinking," metaphysical cope. | Podcasting in Time: Stalker with Philip Metres | 27 Aug 2026 | 02:22:22

You'll also get all the other bonus episodes of TIYA After Dark: https://www.patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife Welcome back to Podcasting in Time, a This Is Your Afterlife bonus miniseries exploring the filmography of Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky. Stalker is the only movie I'd seen before embarking on this project, and it's in the conversation for most people's favorite Tarkovsky. But for me, the real treat of this episode is my guest. Philip Metres is a poet, scholar, and TRANSLATOR OF ARSENY TARKOVSKY'S POETRY. That's right, the father of Andrei whose poems feature prominently in several of his films, especially including Stalker. Phil and his co-translator Dimitri Psurtsev published I Burned at the Feast: Selected Poems of Arseny Tarkovsky, an approachable volume that shows the father as an artistic force, a fact the son clearly knew. Beyond his translation work, Phil has amassed a heap of impressive accomplishments. Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships! A Pushcart Prize! He's the director of the Peace, Justice, and Human Rights program at John Carroll University! And I just happen to know him socially as a fellow Clevelander and 80s punk rock fan. Who better to talk to about Andrei Tarkovsky's status as "the poet of cinema"? What a treat. | Serving, Loving, and Mocking Children with Brandon Ogborn | 18 Aug 2026 | 01:28:31
I razz him for using "brutally honest" in descriptions of two separate projects, but I love Brandon Ogborn. I know the comedian, playwright, podcaster, and reluctant "content creator" from our days on the same improv team at iO Chicago, Sports Team. Reminiscing about that time is the closest I get to nostalgia, and even then, Bubba had stories that made all our eyes pop out of our skulls. He's continued to amass stories as a parent of two young kids he makes fun of on Instagram, and now he's turned his parenting and growing up stories into a one-man stage show, SAHD (Stay-At-Home Dad). It's a funny, personal piece full of heart and the idiosyncrasies that make Brandon such a joy to know. You should see it in L.A. if you can (details below). Either way, enjoy this little slice of Brandon. We talk about: his dead dad, ADHD, growing up Christian nationalist in the Midwest, out-of-body experiences vs. astral projection, people outgrowing homophobia, the accuracy of Pixar's Soul, reckoning with the statistical unlikelihood of Hollywood success. Also, there is one f-slur and a very quick mention of child sexual abuse. This Is Your Afterlife is made possible by listeners like you on Patreon. We've reached Mirror, the 4th of the man's 7 fiction features but not quite the midpoint of our series because of the inclusion of a documentary and a book. I say "fiction," but this is famously Tarkovsky's most autobiographical film. In at least one interview, he claimed every single thing in it had happened. I'm skeptical, but as you'll hear, he certainly went to GREAT LENGTHS for verisimilitude. My guest for this episode is Vienna, a contributor to Madeline Lane-McKinley and Sean O'Brien's The Return of the 90s anthology who also happens to love this movie. This episode is a special one because I refer to Tarkovsky's questionnaire for his mother. He had planned to include her answers as documentary footage in an early version of the film, but instead, these wide-ranging questions serve as punctuation throughout our episode. As always, let me know what you think. These bonus episodes are nothing if not experimental. Even more than This Is Your Afterlife, TIYA After Dark is a place to test how close I can come to replicating the experience of doing a live show in podcast form. Which is to say I am so curious what you think of this week's episode, in which my fellow comedians and longtime buddies Drennen Quinn and Daniel Strauss join me to talk over Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, a recently reissued concert film Drennen saw at the store recently. He suggested we do the podcast while the movie plays, and so we did. Does the concert audio cut out at one point? Does a baby interrupt the recording? Does the episode start with three people and end with two? Yes, yes, and yes! It is chaos. Here's hoping the good kind! I know I encourage your feedback every week, but if there's any week to email, it's this one. We talk about: boomers on weed, music babies can play, how volcanoes work, wearing diapers to concerts. | Resonance in All Its Forms with Oui Ennui | 04 Aug 2026 | 01:27:16
"Ants experience humans as shadows and wind." And with that statement, four-time (!) TIYA guest Oui Ennui blew my mind. There are forces bigger than we can imagine, and how can we be sure of what we know??!!! My conversations with Jonn (Oui) get heady, so I wasn't surprised to be talking about the nature of time, but that ants line was poetry. It's a moment of resonance in a conversation about resonance, artistically and in relationships. The episode starts and ends with the concept of no-contact, but it's the result of the exact opposite between Oui and me. We talk about: breaking no-contact, Alice Coltrane, Prefab Sprout, not being built for these times, passive suicidal ideation, reasons to stay alive, overexplaining as kink, one-person communities. My head is full of flowing waters, plants swaying in the wind, and horses being weird, and we've reached the point of the series where I'm not sure what I've said and on which episode. Plus, this movie affects me the way the planet Solaris does everyone in its orbit: it scrambles my mind! Fortunately, I've got film critic Fred Barrett here to talk about it. It's another episode of Bracketology, the comedy argument game show created by me and some of my longest friends in comedy. This time, it's Bill Stern, Claire Favret, Meaghan Strickland, and me arguing Ways to Live! How it works: pick a topic, fill a bracket with examples of that topic, and argue the matchups in the bracket until we crown a winner. The thing is, the winner of Bracketology is the quintessential example of the topic, NOT necessarily the "best" or our favorite example. | Communism or Faith or Both with E Conner | 21 Jul 2026 | 01:25:58
I don't remember when I started responding "THANK YOU" to guests saying, "Good question," but E Conner said it so often I felt obliged to explain the bit. I was slightly humbled by their admission it's an organizing trick for when you don't have an answer and not the turbo validation I interpret it to be. Fortunately, I don't need permission to self-aggrandize, and I have no plans to retire the bit any time soon. It's a silly moment in the midst of a really pleasant and sometimes intense conversation about E's punk rock radicalization, surprising (to me) orientation toward religion, and what it feels like to be part of an activist/artistic community in the Bay Area for 20 years. We talk about: punk roots, tenant organizing, Black Liberation Army pamphlets, Maximum Rocknroll, traveling as a homeless teenager, the Ghost Ship fire, environmental grief, turning self activity into collective activity. This is it, y'all: the Andrei Rublev episode. I write this blurb from a future where I've now seen 5 of the 7 Tarkovsky features, and currently, Andrei Rublev is my favorite. In the Mark Le Fanu book I reference throughout this series, he says this movie "represents filmmaking about as physically ambitious as it is possible to contemplate." And here, I'm contemplating it with Pod Casty for Me's Ian Rhine. Ian is a sensitive, funny, and intelligent conversation partner, and this episode was truly a joy to make. At one point during recording, I remember sitting back and just appreciating how nice it was to be having such a great talk about such an incredible movie. This episode is longer than the final cut of the film but not as long as the original cut, The Passion According to Andrei. As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts. | The Two Tape Decks in Your Head with Rhys Langston | 23 Jun 2026 | 01:36:08
I met rapper, writer, visual artist, and technical octuple threat Rhys Langston when he opened for This Is Your Afterlife's 200th guest, Open Mike Eagle, at a show in Cleveland. As I say to him in this episode, there were telltale signs he was my type of guy. I think he'll be your type of guy too. We recorded near the end of the NBA playoffs, as my partner and I were deepening our Cavs and general basketball fandom, and it just so happens Rhys has an entire former life as a basketball player. And that's not even his coma! Enjoy our conversation, and do yourself the favor of checking out his music. It's especially good for summer. We talk about: working in multiple art forms, the tingle vs. the cold sweats, being too intense, amassing an archive of your own work, brain breaking after calling off an engagement, how many notebooks he uses at once, (Long) COVID & brain fog, wishing your art was more of a conversation, anhedonia, berries from the neighbor's yard, George Jackson, Octavia Butler, My Life as a Night Elf Priest. | PREVIEW — Does a Yacht Have Mortgage?: Questioning AI and Myself | 17 Jun 2026 | 00:12:17
This is a preview of a bonus episode from the Patreon feed, TIYA After Dark! Head to patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife to hear this full episode and all the others for just $5 a month. This solo episode was an experiment. Of the things that have occupied my thoughts recently, I picked two, made one a starting point and the other an endpoint, and improvised my way from A to B. I'm pretty happy with it! As always, I'd love to know what you think. I talk about: no one actually understands AI, harm reduction, bubbles bursting, property over people, inane job interviews, reckoning with Tarkovsky, echo chambers, losing dreams, news flash: unemployment is hard and sad. | Return of the 90s Part 2: Spirals & Waves with Madeline Lane-McKinley and Sean O'Brien | 12 Jun 2026 | 01:41:45
Cultural critic & friend of the show Madeline Lane-McKinley joins my conversation with Sean O'Brien about their book The Return of the 90s: A Cultural History of the Present for the end of another two-episode week! Or am I joining their conversation? Doesn't matter! It's a great one because not only do we get to explore in greater depth the project of the book, in the back half of the episode it gets personal, as we explore how the project of periodization has affected them as people. Plus, we all share our "most 90s" memories. | Return of the 90s Part 1: Anti-Work, Pro-Sleep with Sean O'Brien | 09 Jun 2026 | 01:50:21
I don't tend to use the word "periodizing" for the project of This Is Your Afterlife, but when I ask my guests, "What's your coma?," I'm absolutely "categorizing the past into discrete, quantified, and named blocks of time for the purpose of study or analysis" (thanks, Wikipedia). Periodization is the explicit project of The Return of the 90s: A Cultural History of the Present, a new book edited by Sean O'Brien and TIYA friend Madeline Lane-McKinley. In another two-episode week, I'm talking to them about this cultural criticism project and personalizing it. What world did the 90s leave us with? What do we make of the decade's resurgence? And what does it mean if the world we remember never existed in the first place? First up is Sean's solo episode, in which I roll out the purple carpet to give him the same TIYA treatment Madeline got with her solo episode. Then on Friday, I talk to them both in a more free-form conversation about the book, so stay tuned! We talk: an intro to Marxism, the need for sleep, WIRED magazine, afterlife as anti-work utopia, prostrating at the altar of academia, lessons he learned from watching his mother die with grace. | Most Things Are Mid with Jeff Weiss | 26 May 2026 | 01:36:31
Is gossip the only thing people want from their media these days? Is your own taste to the contrary evidence of an audience for something different? What do you do when you want to create work that engages culture thoughtfully in a format longer than a single TikTok? The answer for Jeff Weiss is: double down on the publication you started as a rap blog in 2005, which has launched the careers of many excellent writers and influenced culture in mind-boggling ways, like helping to solve murders and free people from prison. Upon launching a subscription model for POW MAG, Jeff wrote an essay that resonated with frequent This Is Your Afterlife concerns: transformation, physical media, and creating sustainably outside the boundaries of corporations. I had to talk to him. In this conversation, I related to Jeff's fullness of opinions while deeply resisting the take-based attention economy. It's not that we hate gossip. We just don't want it forced on us! We talk about: manifestos, information DOESN'T want to be free, finally becoming the writer he wants to be in 200 years, boring ancestors, Drakeo the Ruler and a couple grisly details of his murder, searching for justice in the U.S. criminal legal system, the existence of evil, being an L.A. times bestseller. | PATREON PREVIEW — Nasty Squeezes with Sarah Knittel #00001: What Are Nasty Squeezes? | 19 May 2026 | 00:12:13
This is a preview of a bonus episode from the Patreon feed, TIYA After Dark! Head to patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife to hear this full episode and all the others for just $5 a month. You can also purchase just this standalone episode for $3 here: patreon.com/posts/nasty-squeezes-158644003 Sarah Knittel is a clown, actor, producer, deviser, previous TIYA guest, my close friend, a comrade-in-arms when it comes to DIY solo performance, and one of the people I consult most often on creative process questions. Her show Nightmare Fuel, which she brought to the Edinburgh Fringe the first year I went before we'd even met, includes a concept called "nasty squeezes." A nasty squeeze may contain elements of pubescent longing, anticipation, danger, sexual fantasy, and joie de vivre. Yet it's more than any one of those things, and there's no set formula. It's a fecund topic, and I've thought for a while it would make for a great podcast. So here it is, episode 00001 of Nasty Squeezes, in which Sarah explains the genesis of the phrase, we struggle to define the concept succinctly, and we lay the groundwork for future episodes of Nasty Squeezes. This was a blast to do, so if you like it, let us know! We'd love to do more under the umbrella of TIYA After Dark for now, but we've got nothing set in stone. We talk about: getting your tit touched, Mark Hoppus, cautionary tales (DO NOT DO THESE THINGS WE ARE DESCRIBING), Hard Copy, Jerry Springer, no-ring wrestling, Yahoo! checkers. | Pod Casty for Me Part 2: I Came Out of IOP and Started a Podcast with Jake Serwin | 15 May 2026 | 02:16:12
Pod Casty for Me week on This Is Your Afterlife concludes with a silly, serious, thorough, and discursive episode with that podcast's other host, Jake Serwin. I'm pleased to say our internet interactions have blossomed into an actual friendship, and I'm not at all insecure about how much I text him after the bit about "Lisa Lampanelli" he does at the top of the episode. Nah nah nah, c'mon, Jake is quick, funny, perceptive, irreverent, and a great hang. Enjoy the second of these episodes with my favorite movie guys who are also political guys. We talk about: toilet humor, being the sibling of a cancer kid, Y2K fear, depression, artful droppings, poststructural theory, ketamine therapy, hyper-vigilance, the poor timing of 9/11, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Old Guard, the Universal Studios backlot tram tour, another Pod Casty hiking memory, what red Gatorade is made for, his movie recs for TIYA listeners. | Pod Casty for Me Part 1: Forced Into the World with Ian Rhine | 12 May 2026 | 01:43:56
Ian Rhine is "one of the guys" who host Pod Casty for Me, my current favorite podcast. He and Jake Serwin talk about film and politics, and their deep friendship is evident in every episode. I find it illuminating and comforting and fun, and, wouldn't you know it, that's also how I feel about this conversation with Ian. I split him from Jake for another two-episode week, so stay tuned for Jake on Part 2. Ian and Jake joined me on a bonus episode a few months back to talk about Exorcist III, so these appearances on TIYA proper are overdue! I really love these guys, and I hope you do too. We talk about: each other's podcasts, bodies of work, depression, suicidal ideation, cognitive behavioral therapy, the stuff you're worried about mostly not happening, becoming a Movie Guy, the liberation theology to Politics Guy pipeline, hiking in Glacier National Park, his movie rec for TIYA listeners. | PATREON PREVIEW: Afterlife Power Rankings + Pixar's Soul with Daniel Strauss and Drennen Quinn | 05 May 2026 | 00:13:43
This is a preview of a bonus episode from the Patreon feed, TIYA After Dark! Head to patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife to hear this full episode and all the others for just $5 a month. People have mentioned many versions of the afterlife on TIYA, but which one is THE BEST? That's exactly why we're here today. Afterheads, I present to you the Afterlife Power Rankings. My long-time comedy collaborators Daniel Strauss and Drennen Quinn join TIYA After Dark to rank eight separate afterlives, but first, we discuss the Pixar movie Soul, since Lucia Whalen mentioned it on her recent episode. I'll update the Afterlife Power Rankings from time to time on the podcast, but those updates will all be reincarnations of this very first list. You're in on the ground floor. How did we do? In addition to assembling the APR and Soul talk, we play a game of Real vs. Fake: Jazz Venues! We talk about: Soul; jazz; achieving your dream and still feeling disappointed; Afterlife Movie Club & other film representations of the afterlife; Panama City Beach, Florida; DO NOT LIVE EVERY DAY LIKE IT'S YOUR LAST. | Place-Goers Part 2: Grief Is a Mole (The Sauce) with Danny Catlow | 01 May 2026 | 01:23:50
Place-Goers Week continues on TIYA, an acronym my guest—comedian/actor/YouTuber Danny Catlow—attempts to pronounce in this episode and we agree doesn't quite roll off the tongue. WE COVER SO MUCH GROUND IN THIS EPISODE. It starts with talk of how we met each other when my improv group Computer stayed on his couch for a festival in Austin when he was 18 and I was in my mid-20s. Strange! And then it ramps up (or cooks down?) into an exploration of grief in its many forms as Danny attempts to break the podcast's record for number of "comas" mentioned in an episode. We talk about: male hosting, sleep anxiety, bad breakup, mom dying young, contrarianism & shamelessness, play therapy, falling in love with restaurants, kids grieving performatively, Six Feet Under, mono no aware. | Place-Goers Part 1: The Muscles Are Releasing Juice Into the Holes with Kate O'Connor | 28 Apr 2026 | 01:17:40
I've become a weekly watcher of Kate O'Connor's YouTube vlog, Place-Goers, which features her going places with her boyfriend, Danny Catlow. I know both comedians—and unapologetic YouTubers!—from doing comedy in Chicago, but since they live in L.A. now, that's the site of most of their place-going. Their dynamic is great together, but for their TIYA appearances, I wanted to talk to them separately. These are the first two-part episodes featuring collaborators in a long time, and it's the very first two-episode week for the podcast. We talk about: relationship patterns, increasing bone density, Jungian therapy, being a gamer, codependency, abusive relationships, the euphoria of witnessing death, Delta Work and frying the small fish. | PATREON PREVIEW — Field Trip: Cemetery Visit to My Neighbor Harvey | 21 Apr 2026 | 00:15:53
All-new type of bonus episode this week! I decided to visit the cemetery across the street from me, make my way to the grave of Cleveland working class artist hero and underground comics pioneer Harvey Pekar, and bring you all on the trip. This was a blast to record, and it's one of my favorite episodes of TIYA After Dark and maybe even the entire project of This Is Your Afterlife. Some of the audio is rough around the edges, especially in the bookshop and coffee shop, but those segments are quite short, so stick through if you're having trouble! I talk about: historical people, violent ways of networking, coffee mishaps, daffodils, expectation vs. reality, art about everyday life. Patreon is the only place to see pics from the trip! | A Redo of THE FIRST DEAD EPISODE with Lucia Whalen | 14 Apr 2026 | 01:18:55
Chicago comedian and gem-of-a-person-to-talk-to Lucia Whalen returns to This Is Your Afterlife... for the first time? Lucia wanted a few things from episode 83 kept private, so I sent it to the great podcast beyond, and we took the opportunity to record a new conversation as episode 205. I honestly think we had even more fun than before! We're older, wiser, and Lucia is DEFINITELY prepared this time. Right, Lucia? We talk about: having a one-page worldview, the 2020 Pixar movie Soul, disappearing into oneness vs. losing consciousness, being present for her dad's heart attack, the lonely life of a touring standup comic, if clips on social media have changed the feeling in the room for standup shows, winning the lottery with your friends and family, our opinions of each other. | Arm the Choir with Wretched Blessing | 31 Mar 2026 | 01:14:28
There's only one piece of music from 2026 so far that I've loved, but it's nearing the point of obsession: Wretched Blessing's "How Deep Is Your Love?," which features guitar work from previous TIYA guest Genital Shame! It's a cover of the Calvin Harris & Disciples song (not the Bee Gees), but there's an important note: Norwegian singer/songwriter Ina Wroldsen is uncredited on the original, despite singing the hook and co-writing the song. Wretched Blessing drummer and singer Rae Amitay emphasizes this in the liner notes on Bandcamp, and they brought it up on this episode. Rae and Wretched Blessing are attuned to the overlooked, as their songs frequently face evils that are regular conversation topics on TIYA: fascism, Zionism, complacency. It was a pleasure to hear Rae and Kayhan Vaziri, the other half of Wretched Blessing (who are real-life engaged), talk about the intersections of politics and art. They're sweet and fun people who make heavy music full of righteous rage. You get all of that here. We talk about: preaching to the choir; teaching kids music in School of Rock; high school exes; the mind-expanding benefits of travel; Crimethinc.; Zionist indoctrination; Gruyeres, Switzerland; HR Giger; and basically everyone on earth should be in a touring band maybe? | How People Change with Leigh Claire La Berge | 17 Mar 2026 | 01:07:11
"How can this possibly be the way?!" is a question Leigh Claire La Berge asks constantly in Fake Work: How I Began to Suspect Capitalism Is a Joke. The book is Leigh Claire's reflection on her time prepping a Fortune 500 company for Y2K by essentially making a bunch of copies, double-checking spreadsheets, and traveling internationally to give frivolous PowerPoint presentations. It's very funny! And unfortunately hella resonant! Leigh Claire jumped right into the deep end with me on this episode, and the result is one of my favorites in a while. We talk about: anxiety, Fake Work, fake work, marxism, really trying to understand how other people came to their beliefs, psychoanalysis, getting a PhD, making room for pleasure and humor in our politics. | PATREON PREVIEW: "Synecdoche, New York" Is a Way Homer with Daniel Strauss and Drennen Quinn | 10 Mar 2026 | 00:11:48
This is a preview of a bonus episode from the Patreon feed, TIYA After Dark! Head to patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife to hear this full episode and all the others for just $5 a month. Daniel Strauss and Drennen Quinn return to talk about Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York. They're my closest comedy friends since right before this movie came out in 2008, and it was fun to sit down and goof off about a movie Daniel calls one of his favorites that he'll never see again. We talk about: bedtime, a career in the arts, phone etiquette when recording a podcast, Theatre of Cruelty, aging, nontraditional horror, no longer being able to relate to characters you dislike, still relating to those same characters. | Just Saying What You Mean with Christopher Jason Bell | 03 Mar 2026 | 01:41:56
I recently saw two movies that exemplified how I want to make political art: Neo Sora's "Happyend" and "Failed State" by Christopher Jason Bell and Mitch Blummer. Both films tell intimate stories that show rather than obscure the ways political systems influence their characters' lives. In this episode of This Is Your Afterlife, I'm grateful to talk to "Failed State" co-director Chris Bell about his approach to making political work and what makes him the artist and person he is. He's TIYA's first filmmaker guest! We talk about: DIY filmmaking, reconnecting with childhood friends, panic attacks, meditation, the mundanity of skydiving. | PATREON PREVIEW: "Emotional Man" Deep Dive with Lucas O'Neil | 24 Feb 2026 | 00:19:49
This is a preview of a premium episode from the Patreon feed, TIYA After Dark! Head to patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife to hear this full episode and all the others for just $5 a month. I love talking to Lucas O'Neil about the specifics of standup comedy craft, and since he just released his first special, Emotional Man, I use this bonus episode as an opportunity to dig deep with him into the process of conceiving, creating, and releasing it. It's the kind of creative exercise I've longed to do in podcast form, and I'm grateful to be able to do it with a previous guest of This Is Your Afterlife who also happens to be a very funny and thoughtful artist and friend. We talk about: Edinburgh Fringe, breaking gender and genre boundaries, outfit anxiety. | The Living Other with CRASHprez | 17 Feb 2026 | 01:39:56
Michael Penn II, aka CRASHprez, makes two rapper episodes in a row! Not since Mike Watt has there been a This Is Your Afterlife guest slinging this much of their own lingo (what is it about Mikes?), and I do my best not to pretend too hard like I understand it all. Fortunately, we take a detour into the topic of slang ("getting kirk" is simply unbelievable) on the way to Michael revealing one of his origin stories as an artist. It's a small, powerful moment, the kind I love featuring on TIYA, and I'm glad he didn't save it for his eventual Rolling Stone interview. We talk about: gay shit, COVID shit, ally fatigue, underground rapper trade, social death theory, Lil Wayne's "The Carter" documentary, the relationship between actions and words. | TIYA 200! What Is Experience If You Don't Have a Body? with Open Mike Eagle | 03 Feb 2026 | 01:09:07
Sometimes a guest breaks my brain, like when Open Mike Eagle asks the titular question of this episode. I'm still parsing the way the question reorients consciousness in the body rather than as an entity separate from it. Maybe it's a basic thought, but it hit me fresh this time. But let me back up. OPEN MIKE EAGLE IS ON EPISODE 200 OF THIS IS YOUR AFTERLIFE. The rapper, podcaster, streamer, TV writer-performer-producer-creator, and independent art-making role model of mine has been a dream guest since I started the show. You can hear why at the beginning of the episode. This conversation took years to happen, and I'm so glad it did. He's a pro talker and an interesting thinker, and I came away deeply evaluating how I want to live, create, and move through the world, which is one of my favorite states of being. Is this the greatest TIYA episode of all time? It's in the running! And hey, thank you for listening to This Is Your Afterlife. It is a joy to produce, and it means more than words to me that you listen. We talk about: sad pigeon man, Edinburgh Fringe and Baby Reindeer, Comedy Central, Internal Family Systems therapy, professional jealousy, compartmentalizing, ways people don't listen, unapologetic art rap. | [PATREON PREVIEW] Bracketology: Transformative Life Experiences with Meaghan Strickland, Bill Stern, Nick Leveski, Mark "Huberman" | 27 Jan 2026 | 00:19:17
This is a preview of a premium episode from the Patreon feed, TIYA After Dark! Head to patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife to hear this full episode and all the others for just $5 a month. I use my coma as the central metaphor of This Is Your Afterlife to discover the moments that transformed my guests' lives, but is there a more transformative life experience than a coma? What's the MOST transformative life experience? This is the question we answer in this week's TIYA After Dark, Bracketology: Transformative Life Experiences. "We" is several members of K.C. Redheart, my first improv team in Chicago at the Playground Theater: brilliant standup Meaghan Strickland, stupid (compliment) sketch comedian and improviser Bill Stern, and the very funny Nick Leveski (who improvises in Richmond, VA) and Mark "Huberman." These are some of my closest friends and oldest comedy collaborators, going back to 2008! Bracketology is a game show format we created where we a) pick a topic, b) fill a bracket with examples of that topic, and c) argue the matchups in the bracket until we crown a winner. The thing is, the winner of Bracketology is the quintessential example of the topic, NOT necessarily the "best" or our favorite example. If you want to follow along from the beginning without knowing the outcome of each match, here are the top 6 seeds we determined before the episode started:
I hope you love listening as much as we loved doing this. | An Amusement Park Based on Your Life with KR Riiber | 20 Jan 2026 | 01:19:17
KR Riiber wrote one of the best plays I've ever seen, Tangles & Plaques, a show about dementia and memory care borne from their time as an ensemble member of the Neo-Futurists, the Chicago theater group with core tenets like honesty, brevity, risk & chance, and transformation. Hmmmm, sound like any other show/podcast you know??? Jk, this is not exactly a "brevity" podcast. Truly though, the Neos have been a huge influence on my work, and I'm excited to finally welcome KR to the ranks of Neo-Futurists I've had on the show. The afterlife they imagine in response to the show's first big question is so rich and provides a scaffolding for everything else in the episode. What a treat! We talk about: divorce, Marfan syndrome, how live performance contains the possibility of failure, "graduating" from the Neo-Futurists, worry vs. practicality in response to traumatic news, a life-changing improv exercise. | PATREON PREVIEW: Exorcist III with Pod Casty for Me (Ian Rhine and Jake Serwin) | 13 Jan 2026 | 00:34:59
This is a preview of a premium episode from the Patreon feed, TIYA After Dark! Head to patreon.com/thisisyourafterlife to hear this full episode and all the others for just $5 a month. I got to talk about my favorite movie with the hosts of my favorite podcast! My guests this week, Pod Casty for Me's Jake Serwin and Ian Rhine, have not appeared on the main feed. YET! But I couldn't resist easing them into the TIYA universe with a talk about a movie I first saw in the fall of 2024 that has since become one of my all-time favorites: William Peter Blatty's Exorcist III! This is the most excited I've been to release an episode since relaunching the podcast, and that is really saying something. This is a wonderful conversation about faith, art, politics, and horror, on screen and in life, wrapped in a blanket of hating on Pete Holmes. Suffice it to say, you don't need to have seen the movie to enjoy this ep! But just FYI, it does spoil plot. I can't say E3 has edged out Bad Santa as my favorite movie ever, but I was not exaggerating when I said Pod Casty for Me is my favorite podcast. If you dig This Is Your Afterlife and want a podcast with a similar worldview but not similar subject matter, you should check out Jake and Ian's show. I hope you join the Patreon to hear the whole two and a half hour episode, and I'm even offering it as a standalone release over there for $3. If not, enjoy this meatier than usual preview. | What Is the Ladder When You're a DIY Artist? with Kevin Michael Wesson | 06 Jan 2026 | 01:54:31
I encountered the live feed puppetry of Theatre Nobody's "rustbelt." when I shared a venue with the show at Cleveland's BorderLight Festival 2025. That's how I met Kevin Michael Wesson, a Chicago puppeteer and theatre artist committed to the DIY ethos that so inspires me. This episode is full of gems like Kevin calling his childhood puppeteering "playing critters" or dropping the knowledge that doing puppetry is like "acting if you didn't have a body." We talk about: the foundations of puppetry, bunraku, urban exploration, Midwestern emo, being proudly unrepresented, moving to Chicago from Florida, LaVeyan Satanism, New Year's resolutions. I love year-end list season! Whether you're as gung ho as I am or view these lists with skepticism (or both), I've decided to share my enthusiasm by reading a bunch and then very UNSCIENTIFICALLY telling you which albums on them are truly the best. I sorted through hundreds of albums to arrive at these 11, unranked but sorted into six groupings. Plus three Unlisted Faves that didn't make the lists I perused but that I liked enough to share. You can read the full list on Patreon, but here are... | Creating a Space Within Yourself Nobody Can Touch with Keir Neuringer (Irreversible Entanglements) | 23 Dec 2025 | 01:15:32
Keir Neuringer is my kind of artist. The saxophonist, improviser, writer, and composer of Irreversible Entanglements and DROMEDARIES faces down the horrors of our world and plays AT them. He's not making easy-to-compartmentalize "political art." He's grappling with how to be an artist, father, bandmate, and human being during collapse. Like we all are. We talk about: being radicalized during the Iraq War, incorporating politics into music, depression, divorce, playing saxophone after a car accident, hospicing both of his parents when they died of cancer, literally arming the audience, No Mas Lagrimas in Ithaca.
