THINNING OF THE VEIL – Details, episodes & analysis

Richard O. Cowan was a BYU Professor who wrote many articles about the relationship between Temples through out the ages. In our day, we cannot fully understand the nature of the ordinances and covenants made in any of the Lord's Holy Houses without a study of how and why these covenants were made anciently. Everything, even including the building of these structures have been received by revelation, showing God's will in all things. Patterns continually repeat themselves and it is no different when it comes to Temples. In this article Brother Cowan, cites the many evidences that temples existed in every dispensation in one form or another. Everything in the temples today directly correlate with Moses' Tabernacle, King Solomon's Temple, and many more. A study of the past, helps us to understand our responsibility in the present, thus giving us more opportunity in our day to realize the great endowment of power that we have been given.

In 1834, Jonathan Hale and his wife Olive, were baptized as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. That began a journey of soul stretching, discipleship for both. They were determined to serve the Lord at all costs and to do whatever was asked of them as they followed the prophet Joseph Smith and began to serve in God's Kingdom on Earth. Unfortunately, during their journey west, both were taken home to the other side of the veil, leaving small children to cross the plains by themselves. With the aid of Heber C. Kimball, those children made it safely to the Salt Lake Valley, with their testimonies intact. As the church grew and temples began to built up in numerous places the children knew they needed to be close to one. Logan valley became their new home as there was a newly built temple there. Through a series of miracles they acquired numerous ancestral records. They were stalwart in preforming the ordinances for their dead with the help of then temple president, Samuel Roskelley. At the completion of this family's work, a strange, miraculous, spiritual phenomena occurred at the Logan temple and was witnessed by many near and far. Truly the parting of the heavens has, is, and will always be a part of the sacred work that is done in any temple around the world.

Living the Law of Consecration is often put off until we actually are asked to join the coming United Order. However, in the temple, we covenant in real time to live this law here and now. What does living the Law of Consecration in full actually look like? The patterns contained in Enoch's Zion, ancient Israelite temple sacrifices, and current temple ceremonies and rites, are clues to how one becomes welcomed into the great, soon to be City of Zion. The Gathering of Israel is tied to the law of consecration in unmistakable ways. Zion is becoming one with our fellow mortals in the here and now, but also becoming one with the Resurrected Beings, Spirits, and Translated Beings who will also have residency in Zion. Temples connect both the heavenly and earthly cities of Zion in one work, building up the eternal Kingdom of God.

M. Russell Ballard, recounts the thinning of the veil experience of his grandfather, Melvin J. Ballard. This vision came in response after much pleading about how much the Saints would need to sacrifice. Truly being brought into the presence of the Savior requires the living of the full Law of Sacrifice. In a small way, Melvin J. Ballard experienced Zion in his own life for a few brief moments being brought into the presence of the Savior.

Much time is spent on knowing the "when" of Zion. While we are commanded to look at the signs and study the patterns, not much time is spent studying how to gain entrance into this Holy City. It really does not matter when Zion returns if we are not living the celestial laws required to live in the Savior's presence. In the temple we covenant to live the law of Sacrifice, but do we really understand it in it's entirety. Most do not connect the Law of Sacrifice to the Gathering of Israel. However both will gain us an eternal inheritance into Zion. Blood sacrifices have been required for all previous saints living in former dispensations. We are invited to live blood sacrifices in a new way in our dispensation. In patterning our sacrifice after the vicarious sacrifice of the Savior we can and will be worthy and sanctified to enter Zion and the presence of the Lord.
