When it comes to yoga, sharing what we practice, what we learn, and even what we wrestle with creates a ripple effect far beyond the mat. • 🌿 How ShareYoga started as a way to support charities (and how it continues today)
  • 🌿 Why MJ donates a portion of all income to the World Food Program in 2025

Yoga Teaching After 50: The Tech, the Truth, and Why I Keep Going

Description:
Back in the 80s, I was teaching aerobics in the Jane Fonda era—yes, leotards and leg warmers included. By the mid-90s, I fell in love with yoga and soon began teaching.

Fast forward to 2025, and yoga teaching looks very different. Studios want numbers, social media wants constant content, and if you’re over 50, it can feel like you’re being left behind if you don’t know Instagram, TikTok, or how to run a website.

In this episode, I’m sharing my honest experience as a solo entrepreneur and older yoga teacher navigating the tech-heavy yoga world.

This isn’t about shiny success stories or follower counts. It’s about truth, persistence, and remembering that older teachers are deeply needed in today’s yoga community.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • My journey from aerobics in the 80s to yoga teaching in 2025
  • The challenges older yoga teachers face in studios and online
  • Why building an online platform is both frustrating and (sometimes) worth it
  • How I’ve kept podcasting consistently with zero sponsors and a whole lot of love
  • Encouragement for older teachers who feel overwhelmed by tech or left behind

Takeaway:
I may not have thousands of followers or a six-figure yoga empire—but I keep showing up, because teaching yoga is about connection, wisdom, and presence. If you’re an older teacher struggling with the modern yoga world, you’re not alone.

Teaching with Confidence26 Apr 202500:39:17

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

Ever had a student quietly confess something right before class—“I just had surgery”… “I’ve never done yoga before”… “I can’t get up and down from the floor”… or list off a medical condition you’ve never even heard of? Cue internal freak-out. 😳

In this episode, I share real fears yoga teachers face—especially when we worry we don’t know enough to support our students safely. I'll share some personal stories, practical tools, and the exact words I use to help new, injured, and older students feel welcome, safe, and empowered on the mat.

Whether you’re a new teacher or a seasoned pro still having “Wait…what?” moments, this one’s for you.

In this episode, you’ll hear:
✅ The early panic moments I had as a new teacher
✅ Real-life experiences from my weekly 55+ yoga class
✅ What you might say when a student shares a fear, injury, or limitation
✅ How to support older beginners with grace and a good sense of humor
✅ Why you don’t need all the answers to be a great teacher

Quotes to remember:
🧘‍♀️ “The only flexibility required is a flexible mindset.”
🧘‍♂️ “You won't be left on the floor—we move slow, safe, and steady.”
🎶 “Ah, the symphony of knees… music to my ears.”

Yoga Guilt12 Apr 202500:32:32

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

Ever felt like you're not yoga-ing hard enough? Like maybe you should be practicing more, eating differently, meditating daily, or have read the entire Yoga Sutras by now? Yeah… me too.

In this episode, I get real about the sneaky little voice of yoga guilt—the one that whispers “you should…” whenever life pulls you in a different direction. I share some personal stories, including a time I had zero interest in rolling out my mat, the shame spiral triggered by an Ayurveda teacher who wasn't too thrilled about my microwave habits, and my evolution from "meditation is a waste of time" to "how did I ever live without this?"

We’ll talk about how curiosity can be a powerful antidote to guilt—and how swapping “I should” for “I choose to” or “I’m curious about…” can bring the joy back into our practice.

Yoga is not a competition or a checklist. It's a practice—and there’s no shame in making it your own.

👉 Curious about my offerings for yoga lovers (especially those of us in our prime time of life)? Visit www.shareyogawithmj.com to explore classes, workshops, and retreats.

🎥 PS: If you're watching this on YouTube, yes—that is lipstick on my tooth the entire time. I thought about refilming, but then I remembered: yoga isn’t about perfection or appearance. It’s about presence. So here I am, lipstick and all.

The Power of Props22 Mar 202500:26:28

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

Props aren’t crutches—they’re assistants. And guess what? Everyone needs an assistant sometimes. In this episode, I dive into the power of props and how they help us refine, support, and evolve our yoga practice.

Using a block, a strap, or a bolster isn’t about taking the easy way out—it’s about making space for what works now. As our bodies change, so does our practice, and that can be tough to accept. But yoga teaches us aparigraha, the art of letting go—not as defeat, but as an act of wisdom.

We’re exploring:
✨ Why props aren’t just for beginners—they’re for EVERY body
✨ How aparigraha (non-attachment) helps us shift our mindset around our evolving practice
✨ Practical ways to integrate props without resistance or ego getting in the way
✨ The essential props—blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, and the wall—and why they belong in every practice
✨ What to say and teach to help students embrace props as tools for a sustainable, intelligent, and safe practice

Join me as I stress the importance of learning how to use props in your own practice so you can impart their power when you your students.

Our yoga is a lifelong conversation between ourselves and our bodies.

🎧 Tune in and let's prop up our practice—literally and figuratively!

The Posture of Podcasting with Adrianne Jerrett08 Mar 202500:54:27

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode, I sit down with yoga educator and fellow podcaster Adrianne Jerrett, host of All Mats Taken, a podcast that brings together online yoga teachers to share advice and wisdom on navigating the digital space.

We dive into the realities of building an online yoga presence—sharing our wins, challenges, and the lessons we’ve learned along the way. From podcasting to virtual studios, there’s no single "right" way to do it—just like yoga, it’s all a practice. Whether you're tech-savvy or tech-challenged, this conversation will reassure you that taking it one step at a time is the key.

Tune in as we go behind the mic, talk about embracing the learning curve, and remind you that age has nothing to do with your ability to grow online!

Key Takeaways:
🧘‍♀️ Tech is a practice too – Just like yoga, learning new technology takes patience and consistency.
🔍 Stay curious, not frustrated – Approaching tech challenges with curiosity instead of stress makes the journey smoother.
🎙 Podcasting & online teaching are unique to you – There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, so find what works for you.
💡 Small steps lead to big growth – Focus on one thing at a time rather than feeling overwhelmed.
👩‍💻 Age doesn’t define your ability to grow online – Anyone can build an online presence with the right mindset.

Slow Shifting with Rita Smith08 Feb 202500:35:36

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode, we sit down with Rita Smith, a yoga instructor, holistic health coach, and cardiac rehab exercise specialist, to explore the power of slowing down. Rita shares her personal journey of being diagnosed with Hashimoto's in her 30s and how it forced her to embrace a slower, more intentional way of living.

As a former Type A personality, she understands firsthand how challenging it can be to shift gears—but she also knows the long-term benefits for overall health and well-being. Rita walks us through the preventive measures that have made the biggest impact on her life and the lives of her clients, including:
✔️ Smart nutrition for sustained energy and balance
✔️ The power of yin yoga and meditation to cultivate deep healing
✔️ The importance of pausing and embracing stillness

Rita is also a passionate surfer, and she beautifully parallels her time on the waves with the ebb and flow of life. Just like in surfing, she’s learned that resisting the current only creates struggle—but when we learn to ride the waves, whether in the ocean or in life, we find more ease, resilience, and joy.

If you’ve ever struggled with slowing down, this episode is for you. Tune in to learn how intentional rest, mindful choices, and learning to ride life’s waves can lead to a more fulfilled and vibrant life.

In this episode Mj share the joy and the many benefits of practicing yoga with your furry friends.

She tributes her two favorite yoga buddies, Sir Benson the cat and Yogi Caler the dog. They have since passed but MJ recalls how they added a sense of play, patience and joy whenever she rolled out her mat.

She talks about the two poses named after them, Marjariasana, cat pose and Adho Mukha Svanasana, Downward Facing Dog. These poses are in most yoga traditions and provide many benefits.

"Barnyard" yoga has been a trend for several years. Goats, llamas and mini-pigs practicing alongside humans. The connection between human and animals is undeniable.

The effects of being around animals have been studied and confirmed that it has stress reducing impacts such as decreased cortisol, heart rate, and blood pressure, and increases in oxytocin.

Breath is Beautiful with MJ Waddell07 Dec 202400:16:31

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode MJ shares tips and resources when you're dealing with a respiratory illness and it's hard to take a deep breath.

Yoga is the practice of joining breath, body and mind. When the breath and body are weakened from illness, practicing is put on hold so your miraculous body can heal.

She explores the questions:
Should we teach or practice while we're sick?
Are there exercises or remedies that help to expedite our recovery?
How can Pranayama be used?

Bhramari Pranayama, the humming bee breath, is a simple and effective technique for moving and shaking things up in your nose, throat, chest and lungs.

Simple yoga poses like fish, baby cobra and reclined twist are recommended movements from PARI to clear "gunk" from your lungs.

SOVT - Semi-occluded vocal tract, is  the fun practice of blowing bubbles through a straw into water. It helps to change the pressure on your vocal chords so they can relax.

In closing MJ shares a poem that seemed to fit how beautiful our breath is and how visiting your lungs can be healing in more ways than one.

There are no absolute do's or don'ts, just some tips and resources that were useful for her during a recent unwelcome bout of bronchitis.
Here are the links to the studies and resources.

Is Breath Boring?23 Aug 202500:19:54

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

Breathing—it’s something we do all day, every day, without thinking. But what happens when we do think about it? Turns out, the benefits are anything but boring.

In this episode of The Youthful Older Yogi, MJ explores and shares the surprising science of conscious breathing. You’ll hear:

  • 🌬️ Fun facts about your amazing respiratory system
  • 🏥 MJ’s post-surgery story and why doctors gave her a spirometer
  • 📊 Research comparing conscious breathing with mindfulness meditation—and why breathwork often comes out on top for boosting mood, sleep, focus, and decision-making
  • 💡 Simple techniques like box breathing, sama vritti (equal breath), and the powerful “cyclical sighing” breath—shown to be especially effective for lowering stress
  • 🧘 A guided breathing practice you can try right now (don’t worry, it’s short and so simple!)
  • 🙌 Tips for weaving breath awareness into everyday moments—before bed, while waiting in line, or ahead of a stressful conversation

Breath is universal. You don’t need to practice yoga to get more in tune with your breath—you’re already a breather, and that makes this episode for you (and all your friends).

✨ Takeaway: Conscious breathing is one of the simplest, most powerful tools we have to age well, stay resilient, and reconnect with the present moment.

Resources & References Mentioned:

👉 If you enjoy this episode, please share it with a friend—after all, everyone you know is a breather too.

In this episode MJ shares times she's had to teach yoga when that's the last thing she wanted to do.
She explores the questions: How do we teach during times of personal distress?
How do we make our student's feel good, when we feel like shit?
How do we navigate different personal and political views while maintaining our own personal convictions?

MJ has taught during a heart-breaking divorce, injuries, the pandemic and presently when many in this country are feeling disappointment, hopelessness and distrust.

There are no absolute do's or don'ts, just observations from what she has observed and learned from teaching yoga during challenging times.

Remembering that yoga translates as, to yoke, to join and to unite.
Remembering that Ahimsa ( non-harming) is paramount in cultivating compassion towards yourself and all.

Please share your experiences and reflections on teaching or practicing during times of turmoil.

Meditation Made Easy02 Nov 202400:15:18

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode I'll share with you a simple way to start a meditation practice.
No need to sit for a long period of time, trust me that will suck if you're new to meditation.
Just 10-12 inhales and exhales can do wonders.
You start to tame and train you mind.

Meditation is just that, you become the tamer and trainer of your mind.
It's simple but  it may not feel easy as your mind isn't used to being told what to do!

"Monkey Mind" is a concept used to describe how your mind jumps from thought to thought.  The mind is restless, chaotic and easily distracted with thoughts swinging wildly in different directions.

Sound familiar?
Remember Curious George--always causing trouble?

'Monkey Mind" can detract us from work, relationships and quality of life.
Meditation provides calm redirection.
You watch.
You breathe.
You pay attention.
With practice you notice a shift. You wean your mind away from distractions.
You train your brain to focus on one thing at a time.

Try the short finger touch method of observing your breath in this episode.
It only takes one minute!
Everyone can find one minute to
Pause.....Breathe.....and Watch.

Receive my 6 minute guided breath meditation when you
subscribe to my newsletter.

It's Free!

Thank you for listening, sharing and subscribing.
With love and gratitude,

No Age Limit with MaryJayne Waddell19 Oct 202400:28:33

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode, I'm the guest!

This is my first, off-the-cuff episode. Non-scripted, just a from-the-heart thank you to my teachers, my trainings and my willingness to keep learning and growing.

Honestly, the yoga is the easy part as I love my practice and it's ever evolving surprises. The hard part is learning how to share it virtually and all the technology involved.

There is usually a daily outburst of complete frustration when attempting to learn how to build a better website, increase my e-mail list or create engaging content. Even writing these show notes comes with an amount of insecurity...
Does anyone even read them?
Am I wasting my time?
Will it make a difference?

I don't have the answers but I continue to have faith that consistency leads to positive outcomes, the same as yoga practice.

I've been inspired by so many dedicated and knowledgeable yoga teachers.
What I teach and share with my students is in many ways a smorgasbord of all their teachings.

My yoga library is packed with binders of trainings from teachers of all different disciplines. I frequently re-visit the binders, the many books with highlighted passages, the sequences, the modifications, the philosophy, the anatomy and still take away something new or fresh.

It's never too late to start pursuing what you love, finding purpose and making the most of your life.
Stop saying, "I'm to old."
Start saying, "Let's get started!"

HOLISTICALLY WHOLE with ROBIN WILNER28 Sep 202400:53:36

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode Robin shares her own personal journey from body shaming and disordered eating to becoming a Holistic Nutrition coach and teacher. She understands, first hand, the disconnect that can happen between body and mind. That disconnect led her to yoga, which in turn taught her how to sit with her breath, treat herself compassionately and heal her body.

Robin's journey started in the dance studio as a little girl after she saw The Nutcracker and proclaimed “I wanna be Clara someday!” Seven years later, she was.
At 16, she saw Cats on Broadway and proclaimed she’d be in the show. Eight years later, she was on the Broadway national tour. At 29 while in another show, she secretly told a friend she wanted to be in Wicked on Broadway. You guessed it, she was!
Fast forward to today she has a Master of Science in Nutrition, is an E-RTY500 yoga teacher and trainer and is a sought after motivational speaker. Her health and wellness business, Joyful Remedies empowers women to take charge of their health and hormones to reach optimal health.

Our conversation covers how she has navigated "retirement" from Broadway,
the outdated thoughts of perfection, and how she began running at 44! That's impressive!
Fun fact, Robin and I worked together in the North American Tour of Mamma Mia! in 2007-8.
I know you'll enjoy her joyful energy on this episode!

Family Connection with Linda & Kailyn Kehoe14 Sep 202400:35:20

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In a world where parents and children are so busy, practicing yoga with your family provides happy, healthy, quality time together. No tv, no devices or duties, just you and your kids. My guests today, Linda and Kailyn Kehoe, are Mother and Daughter. They've been practicing yoga together since Kailyn was a youngster. Sharing their practice has not only strengthened their bond but provided so many useful tools for their wellbeing.
You'll find their relationship is heartwarming and refreshing.

Linda Kehoe's professional career(s) have included corporate event coordinator, real estate agent  and registered yoga teacher.
We discuss how practicing and teaching yoga ebbs and flows with the demands of life and the new challenges of practice as we age.
We share how yoga philosophies help us be less reactive in challenging situations.

Kailyn's yoga practice began at an early age and has served her well through some challenging times during college. She has recently graduated with an MBA and even working full time she still makes it to yoga class.
She shares how yoga was introduced in the classroom and she recalls
her high school physics lab exploring yoga and the force of gravity.

A big inspiration and example for Kailyn and Linda is Linda's 94 year old Mother who is still active in exercise and dance. Witnessing her dedication has had a profound effect and proof that staying active leads to a long, healthy life.

In our conversation, we also dive into the rich philosophy of yoga and how it can be seamlessly woven into daily practice. Learn how to balance effort and non-harming by practicing the yamas and niyamas, such as ahimsa (non-harming) and tapas (discipline). We discuss the importance of self-awareness (svadhyaya) and how understanding one's limits and capabilities can lead to a more sustainable yoga journey. This segment touches on the sensitive subject of living with chronic illnesses and the often-invisible nature of disabilities, emphasizing the need for compassion and understanding within the community.

We wrap up with a heartfelt exploration of wellness through poetry and the practicalities of aqua yoga. "Sharing my love for poetry, especially pieces that highlight chronic illness and women's issues, I hope to offer a sense of recognition and empathy to listeners facing similar challenges." Christa and I discuss the nuances of aqua yoga, from managing sun exposure to finding the right pool environment, and how these elements can make yoga more accessible for everyone. Welcome Yourself Back09 Aug 202500:21:01

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

Have you ever stepped away from your yoga practice—or any passion or routine—because of injury, illness, or just… life?
 Me too.

After living with advanced arthritis and undergoing a double hip replacement (yes, both hips!), I’m experiencing yoga like it’s brand new—because in many ways, it is. In this episode, I share my story of how my asana practice changed, how I leaned into other limbs of yoga like breath and meditation, and what it means to start again with compassion and curiosity.

I’ll also offer gentle, realistic tips to help you return to any kind of practice—not just yoga—with kindness, flexibility (in your mindset more than your hamstrings), and a healthy dose of humor.

We’ll talk about:

  • What to do when your body won’t move like it used to
  • Why your breath might be your best teacher
  • How to start small and stay curious
  • Why props—and support in general—are a sign of wisdom, not weakness
  • How these principles apply far beyond yoga: to art, music, movement, and any discipline you’ve had to pause

Whether you’re returning to the mat, a hobby, or just feeling like it’s time to reconnect with yourself—this episode is your invitation to begin again.

Because it may be different now… but so are you.

Change Agent with Sue Burden15 Jun 202400:40:56

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode, MJ talks with "Change Agent" Sue Burden about the challenges of being labeled, her weight journey, taking yoga classes internationally, helping others find acceptance no matter what their age or ability and of course staying youthful.

After a 40+ year career as a retail executive, Sue Burden asked herself, "What's next?" She leaned into her 20 year passion for yoga to build strength. The mat became her space to work through adapting to her new retired lifestyle. Over time her yoga instructors encouraged her to explore teaching yoga and to share her passion.  In January 2024 she completed her studies and earned her RYT 500-hour certification with Yoga Alliance. She started a yoga teaching career in her mid 60's.

As a Hatha Yoga teacher, her passion is Yoga for all ages. Sues' special connection is with the over 50 age group wishing to exercise smarter rather than harder. No matter your age, she believes the mat can be a place of release and escape from thoughts & emotions to reach the ultimate in mindfulness.

Sues' yoga philosophy is: Be kind to yourself. This opens the doors to calm breathing, allows for stretching and free movement resulting in stress relief, balance, compassion and a connection with ourselves.

She continues to broaden her yoga experience off the mat and into the water.  Sue received certification as an Aqua Yoga instructor in May 2024.

"Yoga has given me so many gifts like mindfulness, acceptance, stress relief and so much more.  My goal is to connect and share this gift with others."
If you've ever thought you're "too old" to start something new, this episode is for you.
Sue defies typical limitations and will inspire your sense of curiosity at any age!

Befriending Your Body with Kaitlyn Vittozzi28 Oct 202300:38:11

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode, MJ  talks with Yoga Therapist, Kaitlyn Vittozzi, about yoga therapy and how it differs from the traditional yoga class, how couples therapy has renewed her faith in love, how yoga therapy is suitable for anyone at any age and you don't have to have a "problem" to take a class and how befriending your body leads to freedom.
Her work with KMB For Answers helps anyone of any age help with eating disorders or body image and it's free.
She shares a touching story  of how  an 85 year old took a SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) class and proved that it's never too late to start yoga or anything!

Kaitlyn Vittozzi of Rochester, NY is a C-IAYT Yoga Therapist who specializes in chronic pain relief, stress-reduction, and perinatal struggles. Kaitlyn began teaching in 2014, taking a yoga teacher training as a healthy summer hobby. Soon after teaching for her first few months, realized people would leave class happy and let life’s stressors quickly interrupt their mood so she went to study yoga therapy with Phoenix Rising to help people use the tools of yoga to enhance their whole life, rather than an hour per day.

Teaching since 2014, her classes focus on alignment of mind, body and spirit by helping people anchor into the present moment. Clients learn to improve their relationship with physical, mental, and emotional tensions that show up in their bodies.  Kaitlyn also teaches paddleboard yoga and writes for Rochester Woman Online. She loves spending her downtime with her dog.

The Hip Chronicles--Episode # 5: Hip,Hip Hooray!12 Jul 202500:15:05

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

🎙️ This episode is the big one—Surgery Day.

In Hip, Hip Hooray, I take you behind the curtain (literally) of the operating room and share what it felt like to finally arrive at the day I’d been mentally prepping for and nervously circling for months.

I knew it was the right choice. I had the research, the second opinions, the pre-op yoga practice, the calming breaths.
And still—my heart pounded, and a very real part of me wanted to run the other way (I didn’t).

This episode is about what it means to say yes to healing, even when you're scared. It's about how sometimes the bravest thing we can do is lie down on a table and trust that we’ll rise up stronger.

And—because I’m now 10 days post-op—I’ll also share what the first stretch of recovery has really been like.

It’s been a dance of swelling, small wins, surprise tears, and serious gratitude for grabbers and leg straps.

As I say in this episode:
🌀 “Healing is not about rushing—it’s about returning.”

So grab your tea, take a deep breath, and come with me into this pivotal chapter of the journey.
We’re not just fixing a hip—we're learning what it means to rebuild, reframe, and rise.

The Hip Chronicles--Episode #4: From Om to OMG: Pre-Surgery Chronicle28 Jun 202500:10:06

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

When you hit play on this, I’ll be two days post-op, resting with two brand new hips (and probably packed in ice and filled with a relaxed euphoria thanks to pain meds).

But this short episode was recorded two and a half weeks before surgery — in the thick of it. I was overwhelmed, anxious, and buried under a mountain of insurance calls and logistics. I share all of that here, honestly and unfiltered.

This episode is for anyone navigating a health challenge, especially if you're doing it alone. I know how heavy it can feel. I know the moments when you want to throw your hands up and say, “Forget it, it’s too much.” Or in my case multiple expletives!

But I also know this: you are capable. You are strong. Even when it’s messy. Even when you feel anything but.

 I share:

  • Pre-surgery anxiety
  • Insurance madness
  • Logistics overwhelm
  • What it really feels like leading up to a major health decision

🎧 Follow for updates as I share the real recovery in upcoming episodes of The Hip Chronicles. Not sure when I'll be able to make complete sentences after the surgery, but as soon as I can, I will record all the post-surgery stories.

The Hip Chronicles --Episode #3: The Flexible Mayor: Yoga, Hips and Healing 14 Jun 202500:54:42

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

In this episode, I sit down with Julie Domaratz — Mayor of Fairport, NY, fellow yogi, and proud owner of two titanium hips.

Nine years ago, Julie underwent the exact procedure I’m about to have: a double anterior hip replacement. And let me tell you — her story is a masterclass in self-advocacy, resilience, and hope.

Julie shares:

🦴 The first signs something wasn’t quite right

😨 The fears and hesitation around getting surgery

🧘🏽‍♀️ The emotional toll of being told she’d never teach yoga again

🔎 How she interviewed five doctors to find the right one — who just so happened to be a yogi, too

💪 What recovery looked like and how she made it back to her mat

🎉 Why she cheered when I told her I needed new hips (and didn’t gasp like everyone else)

Julie’s story is a beautiful reminder that healing is possible, advocacy matters, and sometimes the path forward starts with a big "no" to the wrong answer — and a bold "yes" to what you know you need.

Thank you, Julie, for showing us what’s on the other side of fear.

The Hip Chronicles Episode: Episode #2 No Pain, No Clue: The Silent Hip Saga24 May 202500:49:15

Send a text and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

🎙️In this keep-it-real episode of The Hip Chronicles, I sit down with my friend and hip hero Wendy Lopez-Swiatek, who just recently had her hip replaced.

Wendy is no stranger to putting her body to work—she was a competitive swimmer and field hockey player, and she spent 36 years as a USPS mail carrier. Yep, this woman’s hips have seriously earned their retirement package.

We talk about the real stuff no one warns you about:

  • The sweet river of denial leading up to surgery
  • Why raised toilet seats are your new best friend
  • Tools you never knew existed to help you put on underwear
  • The wild things people say when they hear you’re getting a new hip
  • What those first two weeks really feel like (hint: it’s not just naps and Netflix)
  • The awkward beauty of accepting help from friends (yes, even for that thing)
  • That even though it's a surgery, it's a miracle—and our bodies? They're magnificent healing machines

Whether you're on your own hip journey or supporting someone who is, this episode is packed with practical advice, belly laughs, and the kind of honest talk that makes you feel less alone (and way more prepared).

💬 Real stories.
 😂 Real laughs.
 🦴 Real new hips.

Hit play, and let’s talk about the weird, the wonderful, and the wildly awkward moments of early recovery.
