#176. Neil Arthur (Blancmange) on the career-spanning compilation 'Everything is Connected (The Best of Blancmange 1979-2024)'30 Apr 202400:48:36

In Episode #176 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to Neil Arthur from Blancmange about the career-spanning compilation Everything is Connected (The Best of Blancmange 1979-2024).

Blancmange's story is one of two distinct chapters. In the early '80s, they infused the emergent synth-pop scene with oblique lyrics, wry British humour and occasionally tabla-tinged sonics, an unlikely mix which saw them soar into the Top 10 with singles such as Living On The Ceiling, Blind Vision and Don't Tell Me.

And since 2011's Blanc Burn album, they've taken that singular style into a new century and somehow become more prolific than ever. Now Blancmange brings all – well, 38 to be precise – of these highlights together with the career-spanning collection Everything Is Connected, released on London Records on 11th May 2024.

In this interview, Neil Arthur discusses the career-spanning collection Everything Is Connected, his love for Abba getting stopped by the police on his way to Top of the Pops and lots more.

#165. John Power explores Cast's Latest Album 'Love is the Call'30 Jan 202401:02:55

In episode #165 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar engages in a captivating conversation with John Power, the lead singer of Cast, exploring their latest musical endeavour, 'Love Is The Call.' This marks a significant return for Cast, with their first album in six years set to be released on February 16th.

Love Is The Call doesn't just resonate with Cast's musical history but also draws inspiration from the influential band, The La's. Although reminiscent of their timeless hits like AlrightWalkawaySandstorm, and Flying, the album showcases a unique evolution that Power couldn't have envisioned during the peak of their chart-topping singles era.

While Love Is The Call takes listeners on a cohesive and immersive journey, it refuses to be confined to a single genre. From the captivating simplicity of Bluebird to the introspective and soul-stirring Tomorrow Calls My Name, the anthemic rock energy of Rain That Falls, to the rebellious punk vibes of I Have Been Waiting, and the infectious Merseybeat charm with an indie-pop twist in Look Around, the album fulfils John's ambition of creating yet another exceptional musical collection. While pulsating with life-affirming energy, some of its lyrics delicately touch upon the themes of the passage of time and the transient nature of life.

In this insightful interview, John Power delves deep into the new album's creation, discussing not only its musical aspects but also his Irish roots, the departure of Jurgen Klopp from Liverpool FC, and many other engaging topics. Listen to episode #165 of The XS Noize Podcast with John Power – BELOW:

A further nine songs take the listener on a musical rollercoaster embracing Techno punk (Reach For The Lasers), Nasty Northern Soul (Read The Room), Swampy Electronica (I've Been Down), Prog Punk (Stardust) and Trip Trop gospel (Lookout Mountain), before the psychedelic Do It Again, a song about trying to grow up but failing, closes this sumptuous album in the best possible way.

Along with the original version of Hello People, there is the Hello People' Facts vs Fear remix' featuring Stephen Fry, a bonus track at the album's end. In this interview, James and Ian delve into the writing and recording of the album, live shows and lots more. Listen to episode #164 of The XS Noize Podcast with James Atkin and Ian Dench – BELOW:

The seventh album from the band - Samuel T. Lined ten tracks deep, the band's debut album, Pools of Colour, is about coming to terms with insignificance. Sharing a deep connection resulting from being best friends for a decade, alongside a DIY formula at the heart of everything they do, junodream is building a captivating world within their tight community of fans and collaborators.

In the five years since their inception, junodream has amassed nearly half a million monthly listeners on Spotify and over 23 million collective streams on DSPs, forging blistering and immersive live performances, including a rapturous set at this year's The Great Escape Festival in Brighton.

#148. Princess Goes (Michael C. Hall) discuss their evolution in 'Come of Age'28 Sep 202300:28:45

In episode #148 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar meets and speaks to Michael C. Hall, Peter Yanowitz and Matt Katz-Bohen from Princess Goes about their 2nd album Come of Age.

Come Of Age is the trio's most accessible yet innovative work to date, replete with songs that traverse a thrilling and often surprising sonic and lyrical landscape. There's a clear cohesiveness to the 12 songs on the album that manage to be catchy and intoxicating, soundtrack-y musicscapes for the ages, synth-heavy but multi-faceted.

Hall, Katz-Bohen and Yanowitz are seasoned performers forging new creative ground together in Princess Goes: Hall may be well-known for playing moralistic serial killer Dexter Morgan in Showtime's hit series Dexter as well as David Fisher in HBO's revered Six Feet Under, but he's been singing and performing his whole life – commanding the stage with his presence as a frontman. Katz-Bohen has played with Blondie since 2008, while Yanowitz is a veteran of The Wallflowers and his own group, Morningwood.

In this interview, Michael, Peter and Matt discuss the making of Come of Age, upcoming live shows, and lots more. And I also squeeze in a question to Michael about Dexter.

#185. Janet Devlin - Navigating the "Emotional Rodeo"02 Jul 202400:49:28

In Episode #185 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to Northern Irish Songstress Janet Devlin. Janet Devlin recently returned with her powerful new country-rock single, 'Emotional Rodeo.' Later this year, she will release her latest album, bearing the same name.

Facing her battles with Borderline Personality Disorder and bipolar disorder, Janet captures the essence of what it's like to love fiercely and fearlessly despite the challenges that come with it. Emotional Rodeo is a reflection of the soaring highs and plunging lows of living - and loving - with BPD, and she hopes it resonates with listeners who may be facing similar struggles.

Since her early beginnings as a standout performer on the UK X Factor at 16, Devlin has gone on to do so much more. Her debut album, Running With Scissors, heralded a defining moment, wherein she sculpted her singular artistic identity with finesse. Her most recent album, Confessional, served as a deeply personal narrative as she poured her heart out, transforming her struggles into a captivating folk-pop odyssey that resonated with audiences worldwide.

In addition to her musical endeavours, Devlin's compelling journey was captured in the 2022 BBC documentary Janet Devlin: Young, Female, and Addicted. The programme explored her own story of alcoholism and its effects on her life and others around her while exploring the stories of other young women suffering from the consequences of alcohol addiction in Northern Ireland.

In this interview, Janet discusses Emotional Rodeo, appearing on the X Factor, her documentary, new music, touring with Russell Crowe, and more.

#184. Lisa Moorish on 'Divine Chaos' and Her Triumphant Return to Music25 Jun 202400:53:26

In Episode #184 of The XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar speaks to singer/songwriter and indie-dance pop icon Lisa Moorish about her new album, Divine Chaos. This is Moorish's first new music in 20 years, released on the sister label to Irvine Welsh's Jack Said What imprint.

Lisa wanted to work with a female co-producer on this new album and teamed up with Zoe Devlin Love (Alabama 3). Renowned producer Steve Mac brought an extra dimension to the collection's tougher electronic beats. Together, they have delivered many flavours—from dance-influenced tracks to indie electronica—amalgamating Lisa's varied sounds across the decades.

Lisa Moorish first made her name in music as a teenager when she had a club hit in 1989 with Rock To The Beat, a track written by Detroit techno luminaries Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson that fed into the UK's acid house explosion. She went on to work with the likes of Paul Weller and George Michael before being swept up in the Britpop scene and recording vocals on tracks by some of the biggest bands of that era — Oasis, Blur and Ash. She then started her indie electro-punk band, Kill City, in the early noughties, and they were snapped up by music mogul Alan McGee and signed to his new label, Poptones.

In this interview, Lisa discusses the writing and recording of Divine Chaos, duetting with George Michael, the Britpop scene and more.
