| How to Use Facebook to Make Money and What I Learned As a Contest Judge | 09 Nov 2023 | 00:34:18 | |
Hello and welcome to the latest edition of The Write Start podcast. I’m Lisa Iannucci and I have been a full-time freelance writer for more than 20 years. This podcast is where you learn how to navigate a freelance writing career and how to make more money. Maybe you are just starting and want to understand how you can be a successful freelance writer or you want to take your current career to the next level. On The Write Start podcast, I provide advice and suggestions delivered by myself and other experienced writers. It’s the right time for the write start. In case you missed it, here is the link to the essay by Nicole Brinkley that I mentioned on the show, here are 24 things publishing should change in 2024. It is well worth a read and a share with anyone you know in the publishing industry, including fellow writers. Nicole is a bookseller at Oblong Books in Rhinebeck New York, is a book reviewer, a speaker at numerous book conferences, and the co-host of the fun Novelstalgia podcast with the New York Times bestselling author Ashley Poston. In this episode, I talk about how the writing industry is hard and getting harder. Writers are facing lower wages, less rights to our work and laws that affect where and how we work. I also talk about how the publishing industry needs to stop focusing on about social media numbers when deciding to take on someone’s book. Finally, I share tips that come from my experience as a judge in a major publishing contest. If you're looking to submit your work to a contest, these tips might help! Hello and welcome to the latest edition of The Write Start Podcast! This is where you learn how to build a successful freelance writing career and, of course, how to make more money. The Write Start Podcast provides advice and suggestions delivered by experienced writers who have successful freelance writing careers. I’m Lisa Iannucci and I’ve been a full-time freelance writer for more than 20 years. Here is the link to the essay by Nicole Brinkley that I mentioned on the show, here are 24 things publishing should change in 2024. Nicole is a bookseller at Oblong Books in Rhinebeck New York, is a book reviewer, a speaker at numerous book conferences, and the co-host of the fun Novelstalgia podcast with the New York Times bestselling author Ashley Poston. This episode's guest is Jennifer L.W. Fink, a former nurse who built a successful full-time freelance writing career after a divorce and who used her experience as a mom of four boys to write the book, Building Boys: Raising Great Guys in a World that Misunderstands Males. We talk about how Jennifer guided her career to become what she wanted it to be while raising her children. Today, she’s an award-winning freelance writer; her byline has graced Parents, American Baby, Pregnancy, Boys’ Life, Ladies’ Home Journal, MyMidwest, Scholastic Instructor, Home Education Magazine, Proto, RN, Advance for Nurses, and other regional and national publications. | Let's Get Real About Life, Mental Health and Doing Better Interviews | 11 Jun 2023 | 00:35:32
(There were a few audio issues that I addressed and to fix them, I took out the original intro, so it jumps right to the start of the episode. My regular intro will return in the next episode!) In this episode, I talk about what I've been doing over the last year. I thought I would have been back last July, but life took me in a different direction, and I needed to step back and regroup. I am brutally raw and honest about grief, anxiety, depression, and mental health in this episode because I think there are so many other writers going through the same thing. I'm sure you feel alone, and I don't want you to.

| Cindy Begel On Her Successful TV Writing Career, Meeting Lucille Ball and more! | 11 Sep 2021 | 00:47:13 | |
On today’s episode of The Write Start my guest is Cindy Begel and I have to admit that I decided to do this episode purely for selfish reasons because this episode focuses on becoming a television and movie writer and not becoming a typical print journalist -- what I really focus on here. I still think that any writer can learn, and be inspired by, Cindy so I hope you'll listen. Cindy Begel is a television writer-producer who has worked for the legendary Garry Marshall and Norman Lear. She’s worked on many classic prime time hit shows, including some of my favorite TV shows ever -- Mork & Mindy, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, The Jeffersons, Head of The Class, Alice, and The New Leave It To Beaver. She has also written for The Martin Short Show, and Mama’s Family. She created/wrote all 52 episodes of the animated series The Kids From Room 402. She wrote feature films for Paramount and Universal Studios. Cindy has some great stories to tell including her chat with Lucille Ball, dinner with Carol Burnett, making Robin Williams laugh and more! | Sean Kanan, Michele Kanan and their book Way of the Cobra Couples! | 18 Jan 2025 | 00:27:31
Welcome to The Write Start Podcast. I’m your host, Lisa Iannucci. Happy 2025 and I’m starting this podcast off on the right foot. Today my guest is actor/producer, SEAN KANAN and his wife MICHELE KANAN. Sean you know either from Netflix’s COBRA KAI (one of my favorite shows), CBS’s The Bold & The Beautiful, the original Karate Kid, his Emmy-winning role on Studio City, or any of his other film/TV credits). Michele Kanan is an Emmy-winning producer, writer, and director. She has produced several films, including Darkness of Man starring Jean-Claude Van Dam, 'Til Death Do Us Part, and the sci-fi film Colonials, starring Greg Kriek. In 2021, Michele won an Emmy for OUTSTANDING DIGITAL DRAMA for STUDiO CiTY (streaming on Amazon Prime, Tubi, and Roku), which has received over twenty Emmy nominations. Together and the reason they are talking to me is because they co-authored the book WAY OF THE COBRA COUPLES which is not their first book. We dive into that book and the others, Sean’s interest in writing, how they worked as a team to write a book, and more, and yes, they do provide some relationship advice for the new year. Now I have to admit that for some reason I found myself a little loud at the beginning of the interview. I must have been exciting to do the interview! But I do settle down after a little bit. I hope you enjoy the interview too. Let’s get started! | Katherine Parker-Magyar Talks About Living Her Travel Dreams and Tips on Being a Travel Writer | 13 Dec 2020 | 00:34:41
Hey everyone it’s Lisa Iannucci and this is a special cross-over episode between both of my podcasts The Reel Travels podcast and The Write Start podcast. My special guest for this episode is Katherine Parker-Magyar, who is an extremely successful travel writer and I thought that writers would want to know how she accomplished what she did as a travel writer and the travelers who listen to Reel Travels would love to listen to what she’s accomplished as a traveler and, of course, her interest in film. Katherine Parker Magyar is the guest today and here is a snippet of her bio: “In my career as a travel writer, I’ve driven husky sleighs through Arctic forests in Finnish Lapland and sailed the Rio Negro to the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. I’ve practiced yoga with goats in the Swiss Alps and chased Alaskan King Salmon off the shores of Prince of Wales Island. I’ve jumped into black holes in Belize and trekked across the most active volcanic valleys in the Caribbean. I’ve hot air ballooned above the Sierra Nevada and tracked rhinos in the savannah of the Maasai Mara." She has written for Architectural Digest, Departures, Forbes, The Week, Business Insider, TripSavvy, The Daily Beast, Tasting Table, Elite Daily, PopSugar, Electrify, Brit + Co, Insider, Go Overseas, Quest Magazine, and the New Jersey Hills Media Group and she is the Caribbean Expert for TripSavvy.
