Episode 33: The WWF In 1993 - Setting the Stage!
09 Jun 2021
02:09:01
The Grenade Returns! After some downtime due to the nasty Coronavirus, the guys from the Grenade return to take on a whole new year and promotions as they analyze and dissect the entire year of 1993 in the WWF!
Yes, we’re going to talk 1993 in the WWF, for better or worse. From the Narcissist to the Lex Express. From Double Doinks to the Giant Gonzalez. From Togas to “Terrific” Terry Taylor. From Bartlett to Booger. From the debut of Monday Night Raw, to the return of… Hulkamania.
BUT, before we get there, it’s time to SET THE STAGE for 1993… In this episode of the Grenade, we thoroughly dissect all of the fallout of 1992 leading into the new year. We talk about the recent company firings and falling business that led to drastic changes within the company including all-new TV programming and new Champions across the board.
We dissect the entire WWF roster leading into 1993… Who’s coming, who’s going? It becomes downright scary when we categorize the current main eventers, the upper card, and mid-card of the time. Up until this point the WWF had never been so depleted on talent, tag teams, storylines, and established stars in their positions on the card.
We also peek into January of 1993 as we analyze the House Show marriages for the month, the current feuds, wrestler injuries leading into the Royal Rumble, and the January Tryouts of stars like the future Public Enemy and ‘Goon” Bill Irwin.
If that wasn’t enough, we also tell the tale of the Tatanka/Maxx Moon (Paul Diamond) affair and fiasco that ultimately led to Diamond’s WWF release. Then brief rehire… and release again.

SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE WWF IN 1993 (00:03:54) We briefly lay out our plans for the program and talk about the fallout of 1992 and what’s to come in 1993!
THE WWF TITLE SCENE (00:05:51)
New Champions are crowned across the board in the fall of 1992 as a true “Changing of the Guard” takes place We talk Bret Hart’s ascension to main event status, the elevation in the career of Shawn Michaels, Tito Santana’s claims of being considered for the WWF Title instead of Bret, Money Inc regaining the tag straps with next to no one left to work in the tag division, and more!
THE CURRENT ROSTER (00:27:45)
We deep dive into the entire WWF roster as we close out 92 and head into 1993. We analyze and dissect each tier of the roster from the Main Event scene, the upper-mid card, what constituted as a mid-card in this timeframe (it’s scary), and even the lower-level talent under contract at this time. Furthermore, we talk about the silly reason the Big Boss Man gave notice to the WWF, the downfall of the Tag Team and Manager division, the many unestablished stars being groomed for the Main Event, and so much more!
RECENT WWF RELEASES (01:16:18)
So many names have just left the company or will be on their way out following the Royal Rumble PPV in January. We discuss the loss of talent like Earthquake, the Big Boss Man, “Model” Rick Martel, the Genius, the Berzerker, the Mountie, and others… We talk Sgt. Slaughter being moved from the ring into an “official” role, the fallout of the Nailz/Vince McMahon encounter and what it meant for the future plans of the Undertaker, and the Ultimate Warrior firing and how he “ultimately” got the British Bulldog fired along with him. We talk all about the ramifications of the Bulldog & Warrior’s releases and how it affected the entire roster and booking plans. With Warrior & Bulldog gone we look at the implosion of the Mega Maniacs team, the in-ring return and babyface turn of Mr. Perfect, the rushed/force move up the card for several individual stars who may not have been ready or reached that “next level”. We fantasy book what the Rumble PPV may have looked like had the Warrior not been fired, including the rumored WWF title match between Bret Hart vs. the Warrior in which it was said the Warrior would play the heel and become Champion. It’s interesting what could have been!
THE TATANKA/MAXX MOON AFFAIR (01:29:45)
We share the story of Paul Diamond (Maxx Moon) being fired after having an affair with Tatanka’s wife. We also discuss Diamond’s firing for the affair and almost immediate return to the company to fill in for an already depleted roster.
CURRENT WWF FEUDS (or lack thereof) (01:34:08)
With only THREE feuds going into 1993, we talk the lack of attempts at storylines, angles, and the writing during this period in the company. It becomes very evident that it was time to regroup and rebuild as the roster changes continue.
BUSINESS & RATINGS WOES (01:36:59)
There’s a major decline in business and ratings by the end of 1992 which leads to new WWF TV programming and new stars. We also have a little fun with the old “There were TWO Ultimate Warriors” rumors that were all the rave back in the time period.
THE JANUARY HOUSE SHOW LINEUPS (01:42:42)
We investigate the matches and “marriages” on the WWF House Show loop for January as we head into the Royal Rumble. As we move into the list of matches it becomes quite obvious (and scary) that almost everyone on the upper mid-card and below were interchangeable as far as booking plans go here to start the year. Was it really just a lack of talent, or lazy booking? We also look at the grooming of Yokozuna as the next big thing as he is fed the like...

NWA Syndicated Issues (01:40:55) The syndication timeline woes continue. Even though NWA Pro for 9/9 is MIA, we discuss once more how behind the times the program is and what exactly is going wrong behind the scenes with the NWA production staff.
NWA World Wide Wrestling 9/9/89 (01:42:47) Okay, NOW the NWA hits an all-time low when they air Post Match Promos discussing results from Clash 8…. BEFORE THE CLASH HAPPENS!!! First, Jim Ross interviews Robin Green about her interference at the Clash, THAT HASN’T HAPPENED YET! Then, Terry Funk & Gary Hart discuss their dastardly attack on Ric Flair at the Clash, THAT ALSO HASN’T HAPPENED YET!!! Plus, the Midnights vs. The Militia, and more with the Skyscrapers, Flyin’ Brian, the Roadies, Lex Luger, and Tommy Rich. Plus, the Fan’s Man Joe Pedicino smells cheeseburgers… and dissension between Missy Hyatt & Robin Green.
NWA World Championship Wrestling 9/9/89 (02:04:56) Until now, it was thought that only 15 minutes of this show existed… but no more! It’s here, the full 2 HOUR VERSION of the September 9th WCW program! Wahoo McDaniel joins for commentary once more as we see Ranger Ross vs. Bill Irwin, Flyin Brian takes on Eddie Gilbert, the battle of the Mikes with Capt. NWA World Championship Wrestling 8/19/89 (00:01:26) Or… Maybe Not… In the biggest example of WCW being WCW, the company reaches an all-time low. It’s the biggest faux pas in company history, and that covers a lot of ground… instead of airing the show taped for 8/19, the NWA winds up accidentally airing the episode of WCW from 3 weeks prior on 7/29!!! By the time they realized the mistake and found the correct tape, WCW had been off the air for 45 minutes. We discuss the ludicrousy of it all here.

We get out first look at the NEW-look Robin Green hours before the vignette airs which actually explains the angle. Oh WCW, you never disappoint. Special thanks to @TheJimCornette on Twitter for chiming in and adding a little insight on the situation and what went on backstage after the mayhem in the ring. Also, a special thanks to the Hannibal Channel on Youtube for an excerpt of a Dan Spivey shoot interview discussing the fallout. It wasn’t disappointing!
Missy Hyatt Talks The Great Muta, Eddie Gilbert, and Politics in the NWA (00:05:29) Special thanks once again to @MissyHyatt on Twitter as she talks being misted TWICE by the Great Muta, the abrupt ending to the Muta/Eddie Gilbert feud, and reuniting with Muta nearly 30 years later and receiving a special gift. Was she misted a THIRD TIME? From there, Missy also talks the Politics within the NWA, Eddie Gilbert being demoted both on and off-screen, and Missy herself being removed from TV for “gaining too much weight”. GET REAL NWA!
Missy is truly underappreciated for her knowledge and memory of this time period in the business and doesn’t get nearly enough respect.
The Wrestling Memory Grenade Free Prize Giveaway Update (00:12:19) We talk the winners of the most recent Thanksgiving Free Prize Giveaway Event and what’s coming next! All you have to do is FOLLOW US on TWITTER for your chance to win future free prizes!

NWA Pro Results for 8/5/89 (00:27:23) We couldn’t find the footage in time for last week’s episode of the Grenade, but we did find detailed results of the program, and we share those with you this week. Featuring Match #1 in the Dr. Death vs. Rotunda Scientific Series.
The Omni Bash Revisited (00:31:14) As promised, Ray did some research and came up with some better answers for some of the unanswered questions last week in regards to the final night of the 1989 Bash Tour that culminated at the Omni. What was the legit figure in regards to crowd attendance? Why did Sting miss the TV Title Match with the Great Muta? We follow up on last week’s questions right here!
There’s a NEW BOOKER in Town. WOOOO! (00:35:32) With record-low TV Ratings and attendance at the house shows un the toilet, in steps the Nature Boy as the “Ultimate Decision Maker” as far as creative goes. Hear the story of just how Ric Flair came to be booker.

Or not! We talk negations, tryouts, who got hired, who didn’t, and the demise of the Ding Dongs… We have a lot of fun here talking Ron Simmons keeping it real, Iron Sheik impressions, John Nord’s interpretation of the business, the masked Mr. Z, Kamala II, and Dick Slater as Terry Funk V2.0.
After realizing how deep we were into the show, Ray calls an audible and elects to cover just one week of NWA TV this week for the sake of quality over quantity!
And with the Power Hour on Saturday Night this week, we kick things off with…

The New Zealand Militia mean business as they take on the Dynamic Dudes and break the cheekbone of Johnny Ace! Fun squashes with the Roadies and the Great Muta. The Steiners face Ron Simmons & The Bounty Hunter. Lex Luger is NUMERO UNO BABY! We discuss at length the production issues going on right now in the NWA. With the Bash PPV behind us, Ray Russell & Steve Xstat move forward with another two weeks of NWA news and action for the weekends of July 28 and August 4, 1989.
The Exodus of Ricky Steamboat (00:10:50) Jim Herd can’t seem to come to terms on a new contract with the Dragon, and Steamer shockingly walks. Where does this leave the Total Package as far as challengers for his U.S. Title goes?
The Conclusion of the Bash Tour (00:17:24) We take a lake at the final leg of the Bash Tour. How did the houses fair post Bash PPV?
NWA Power Hour 7/28 - 29/89 (00:21:25) The Braves go 17 Inning (and lose) causing the Power Hour to air LATE, LATE at night! It’s the battle of two friends as part of the NWA Top 10 rankings when “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert takes on “Wildfire” Tommy Rich. The storytelling from Paul E and Lance Russell in the Rich vs. Gilbert match is a thing of beauty. Gordon Solie breaks down the entire Bash PPV. Norman the… Clown(?) is the guest on Funk’s Grill. NWA World Championship Wrestling 7/29/89 (01:09:50) In a major production snafu, Mike Rotunda challenges Dr. Death to a scientific match, but they play the wrong rebuttal with Doc giving away the outcome of the match… BEFORE IT AIRS NEXT WEEK!!! The Steiner Brothers battle The Iron Sheik & Ron Simmons. SkyScrapers & Norman team up vs. Tommy, Johnny, AND Davey Rich. Action with Sting, Flyin’ Brian, and the already departed RICKY STEAMBOAT.
