Episode #55 Ken Pavlick Pacific Coast K9

Season 3 · Episode 55

mardi 18 novembre 2025Duration 01:18:25

Send us Fan Mail

Pacific Coast K9 started operations in May 2004 and specializes in exceptional high drive sporting breeds for detection work.  We train and sell approximately 120 dogs per year, with the majority of those being Labradors for single purpose detection work (narcotics, explosives, currency, arson, cadaver, etc.).  Our many satisfied long-term clients include the Transportation Security Agency (TSA), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Canada Customs (CBSA), Washington State Patrol, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P), MSA Security, as well as multiple police departments, county sheriff’s offices and security companies.

Pacific Coast K9’s facility in Washington State is set on 10 acres, with a 48 run indoor kennel, a 5000 square foot training building, vehicles consisting of cars and buses as well as large open areas. We maintain an average of 30 to 40 dogs at our facility and can supply dogs as needed. We would be happy to provide you with numerous references.  Our excellent reputation was built on the quality of our working dogs, our professionalism, and a high ethical standard.

Pacific Coast K9 offers an intangible that many other trainers and vendors cannot:  The staff at Pacific Coast K9 have over 60 years of combined experience training and working every type of K9 we sell.   Our staff expertise includes prior military, police, customs (U.S. and Canada), federal agent, and search and rescue.

Ken Pavlick, the co-owner and head trainer for Pacific Coast K9, began his K9 career in the United States Air Force in 1982, where he handled, trained, and supervised patrol dogs, explosive detection dogs and drug dogs.  In 1986, Ken began work with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in California, where he worked both cross-trained patrol/ narcotic detection dogs and a bloodhound for man trailing.  In 1994, Ken moved to Idaho where he was tasked with starting a K9 program for Canyon County Sheriff’s Department.  Under Ken’s expertise and training, their unit grew to 15 working K9 teams, 10 of those teams being sporting breeds (single purpose narcotic detection dogs) working patrol, in the jail, narcotics units and with school resource officers.  Ken also trained over 40 single purpose narcotic detection dogs and handlers for agencies throughout Idaho. Ken handled multiple dogs on SWAT teams at his departments in both Idaho and California. Ken served as an entry team member, and a sniper. He has been a primary instructor for SKIDDS/KATTS, instructing in SWAT/K9 interdiction classes
since 2002. Ken is certified as an instructor in both patrol and detection dogs by Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training, Utah Peace Officers Standards and Training (also a Teaching Judge through Utah P.O.S.T.), Oregon Bureau of Peace Officers Standards and Training, and Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission. Ken is also a certified Master Trainer through C.L.E.A.R. in Canada. All these organizations award training hours credit to students of Pacific Coast K9’s handler and training classes. Ken has also been a detector dog certifying official for the National Police Canine Association (N.P.C.A.), Pacific Northwest Police Detector Dog Association, American Working Dog Association, and the Idaho Police Canine Association. In 2003, Ken left full-time law enforcement to open Pacific Coast K9.  Ken teaches at numerous Police K9 seminars throughout the United States and Canada each year, and has authored articles as a
contributor to Police K9 Magazine. He has also instructed at multiple K9 seminars across the United States and Canada.

We've got a special interview with two fine gentlemen. They are each well accomplished, but have unique stories. They may seem like an unlikely pair to be collaborating with each other which makes this story unique. This is a special episode about redemption and seeing the good in people in spite of past misdeeds. It took some intestinal fortitude and careful consideration to come forward with this story. Episode #43 Jessie Owens-Wilder "Dogged Determination"

Season 3 · Episode 43

jeudi 17 octobre 2024Duration 01:00:42

Send us Fan Mail

I first met Jessie some 8 years ago when she payed her way into a decoy class that I was teaching. She immediately impressed me with her athleticism and enthusiasm. At that time, she was simply a young law enforcement officer with and intense desire to become a k9 handler. She did her due diligence to make herself a viable candidate for the job and was rewarded with the opportunity.  On this episode, Jessie shares some of her journey. Like most journeys hers includes successes and hardships. There a many lessons to take away from this episode. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did.....Howard

Jessie Owens-Wilder (Aka Tanto) has been in law enforcement for almost 10 years and is embarking on her master police officer recognition.  Within that time frame she has had many different roles at her agency so of which were being on the agency's swat team, bike patrol team, and is now a part of the k9 unit.

She has always had an interest in k9 and quickly pursued decoying as a way to learn as much as she could about the specialty.  Jessie decoyed for multiple years until the k9 position opened up at her agency.  She was selected to be her agency's handler and she has been serving her community for the past 6 years with her partner K9 Wilson.

Season 2 · Episode 42

We have been after Ben for an interview for a good while. He is actually one of the first gentlemen we pursued when we began the podcast. It was in his best interest to wait until he had fully retired from the Army before we interviewed him.  Ben is one of those guys that makes you feel glad he's on our side! If your old enough to remember the original GI Joe toys you'll be able to relate to this. Ben looks like the original GI Joe with live action hair. We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did. As you might expect his biography is understated. Ben, we appreciate your friendship and of course your service to our country.

Ben Rader is a 21-year Veteran of the U.S. Army and the owner of Rader K9. Ben gained much of his operational experience conducting operations in the middle east during the Global War on Terror (GWOT) for a U.S. Army Special Forces Commander’s In-Extremis Force (CIF) Company and later as a Multi-Purpose Canine Handler/Trainer. Afterwards, Ben served as the Kennel Master/Detachment Operations Sergeant for his Group.

Episode #39 Rodney Spicer Gold Coast K9 "Perseverance"

Season 2 · Episode 39

mardi 28 mai 2024Duration 01:22:05

Send us Fan Mail

We had a great conversation with Rodney Spicer of Gold Coast K9.  Rodney shared how he became interested in working dogs in the 1980's.  He also shared his insights into puppy and working dog selection.  Rodney's transparency about his meager beginnings is refreshing. The theme that stands out is perseverance. We know that you'll enjoy what he has to say and most definitely will be inspired by his story. Be looking for a part two with Rodney Sr and Rodney Jr.

Gold Coast began from one man’s love of dogs and developed into a world class training and performance center. Rodney Spicer transitioned to actual working-dog training in 1985. He purchased his first dog, a beautiful German Shepherd named Arras, and began working obedience skills. Rodney had a natural ability to read and work with Arras and together they were a great team. After some initial success with Arras, Rodney branched out and joined a working dog club, ultimately taking Arras and several other dogs to titles. In 1991, Rodney founded Gold Coast K9. Gold Coast K9 and Rodney went on to successfully compete regionally and nationally as handler, helper/agitator, training director, and judge.

As Gold Coast K9’s capabilities grew through competition, Rodney focused on training police, military, and high-risk private client service dogs in both patrol and detection. Gold Coast K9’s unique, common-sense approach to overcoming real world distractions, pressures, and changing environments, while maintaining drive, enthusiasm, and goal oriented direction set a standard in the K9 training world. Gold Coast K9 teams went on to receive numerous awards including top dog, top agency, agitator’s choice, and medal of valor.
