An Explanation of The Human Mind: Introduction31 juil. 202600:07:29

Welcome.

Before we begin this series, I'd like to offer something simple.

These conversations are an invitation to explore something extraordinarily close to us, yet so easily overlooked — our own experience.

We begin with the thinking mind: why it behaves as it does, why we become trapped in patterns of thought, and how those patterns shape the way we experience ourselves and the world around us.

From there, the journey gradually moves deeper — into suffering, presence, awareness, consciousness, the sense of self, and the possibility of living with greater freedom.

This is not an academic course or a philosophy to adopt. It is an exploration, beginning with what we can observe in our own experience and following those observations wherever they lead.

This introduction provides the foundation for everything that follows. If you're new to the series, this is the best place to begin.

I hope you'll join me for the journey.

Talk 5 — Why We’re Really Here26 juil. 202600:05:41

This talk asks a deceptively simple question: why are we really here?

Beyond achievement, identity and the lives we spend so much time constructing, is there another dimension to human experience that we rarely notice?

We explore what happens when the continual movement of the thinking mind begins to quieten — and whether beneath all our striving there may be something much simpler waiting to be seen.

Perhaps the question isn't only what we are trying to achieve in life.

Perhaps it is also...

what we are trying to understand about ourselves.

Talk 6 — The Inward Turn: How To See Beyond the Mind’s Illusion25 juil. 202600:09:02

This talk explores a change in direction — from continually looking outward for meaning, fulfilment and answers, to beginning to look inward.

What happens when we stop trying to change the world around us for long enough to notice what is happening within us?

As attention turns towards thought, awareness and the sense of self, something interesting begins to happen.

We don't necessarily find new answers.

We begin to see more clearly...

the structure of the questions we've been asking.

Talk 7 — Everything You Believe About Reality Is Upside Down24 juil. 202600:13:25

This talk explores something we rarely question — the assumptions through which we experience ourselves and the world.

We tend to believe that we're seeing reality directly. But how much of what we experience has already been shaped by memory, interpretation and the thinking mind?

As we begin to notice that process, an interesting possibility appears.

Perhaps clarity doesn't come from finding better beliefs.

Perhaps it begins...

when we start seeing the beliefs we already have.

Talk 8 — The Illusion of Self — And What Free Will Actually Is23 juil. 202600:11:06

This talk explores one of the most convincing experiences we have — the sense of being me.

How does that sense of self arise? Why does it feel so solid and continuous? And what happens when we begin to look more closely at the processes beneath it?

We also explore what this might mean for free will, responsibility and the enormous pressure we place upon ourselves and others.

Perhaps understanding the self doesn't require us to get rid of it.

Perhaps it begins...

by seeing more clearly how it is formed.

Talk 9 — Why Most of Your Suffering Isn’t Real22 juil. 202600:10:15

This talk explores the difference between the pain that belongs to life and the additional suffering the thinking mind can create around it.

A difficult event happens. But then thought returns to it — remembering, interpreting, resisting and imagining what might happen next.

The original pain may be real.

But how much of what we subsequently experience...

is being created by the mind?

And what happens when we begin to see the difference?

Talk 10 — Why Happiness Fades and Peace Doesn’t21 juil. 202600:11:02

This talk explores the difference between happiness and peace — two experiences we often treat as though they were the same.

Happiness tends to depend upon what is happening. Something changes, something is gained, something goes our way... and we feel happy.

But what happens when circumstances change again?

Perhaps peace is something different.

Perhaps it doesn't depend quite so completely upon arranging life the way we want it.

And perhaps understanding that difference helps explain...

why happiness comes and goes.

Talk 11 — What Enlightenment Actually Feels Like20 juil. 202600:11:12

This talk takes a grounded look at what we sometimes call enlightenment or awakening — without the mysticism, drama or extraordinary claims that can surround those words.

What happens when the thinking mind becomes quieter?

When the continual sense of me begins to soften?

Perhaps awakening isn't a dramatic transformation at all.

Perhaps it arrives much more quietly — as greater peace, clarity and presence, while ordinary life continues around us.

And perhaps the most surprising thing about it...

is just how ordinary it can feel.

Talk 12 — What If Lower Life Forms Are More Evolved Than Us19 juil. 202600:11:09

This talk questions one of our most familiar assumptions about evolution — that greater physical complexity necessarily means being more evolved.

We tend to imagine evolution as a ladder, with simpler forms of life below us and human beings somewhere near the top.

But what if we're looking at that ladder in only one direction?

What if evolution and awakening represent different movements — one towards increasing Physical Intelligence, the other towards stillness and a less constrained experience of awareness?

Perhaps the question isn't simply which forms of life are more intelligent.

Perhaps we also need to ask...

what we actually mean by more evolved.

Talk 13 — Why No Beings Are More Intelligent Than Human Beings — In This Universe18 juil. 202600:13:15

This talk asks a provocative question: why does Physical Intelligence appear to reach its greatest expression in human beings?

If evolution can produce increasingly sophisticated forms of intelligence, why should that process stop with us?

We explore the possibility that the human condition represents a boundary — a point at which Physical Intelligence reaches the trailing edge of a particular window of experience.

Using the idea of separate windows, and the analogy of locks along a canal, we begin to explore why Physical Intelligence may not simply continue indefinitely.

Perhaps human beings aren't at the top of an evolutionary ladder.

Perhaps...

we are standing at a boundary.

Talk 14 — The Part of You That Dies — And the Part of You That Doesn’t17 juil. 202600:14:23

This talk explores one of the deepest questions we can ask: what exactly is it that dies?

Our bodies change. Our memories, identities and experiences belong to a particular human life. And eventually, that life comes to an end.

But if consciousness is not the same thing as the structure through which it is experienced, does everything we are necessarily disappear with that structure?

We explore the distinction between the temporary aspects of identity and the possibility of something more fundamental beneath them.

Not as a belief to accept.

But as a question worth examining.

What ends...

and what, if anything, remains?

Talk 15 — The Moment the Self Disappears16 juil. 202600:09:42

This talk explores something that can happen almost unnoticed — a moment when the usual sense of me becomes quiet, or briefly seems to disappear altogether.

Thought may still be present. Experience continues. The world hasn't changed.

And yet, for a moment, there may be no strong sense of someone standing at the centre of it all.

What remains when the continual reference to me falls away?

And what might these brief moments tell us about the relationship between awareness, thought and the self?

Perhaps nothing has been lost.

Perhaps, for a moment...

something simply stopped getting in the way.

Talk 16 — The Part of Consciousness That Never Changes15 juil. 202600:05:09

Until now, we’ve explored what happens when the thinking mind begins to quieten and the sense of me starts to soften.

In this talk, we go a little deeper.

What if consciousness, awareness and intelligence are not the same thing? What if consciousness remains constant, while awareness moves within it — increasingly guided by the structure of the mind?

Using the simple image of consciousness as a room, we begin to explore a different way of understanding the relationship between awareness, thought and Physical Intelligence.

Perhaps consciousness doesn’t expand when the mind becomes quiet.

Perhaps there is simply...

more of the room available to us.

Talk 17 — How The Loop Closes14 juil. 202600:09:54

In the last talk, we distinguished between consciousness, awareness and Physical Intelligence.

Now we ask what happens as Physical Intelligence becomes increasingly sophisticated.

Memory allows the past to influence the present. Prediction allows the future to influence the present. Thought begins referring to thought, and awareness becomes increasingly capable of returning to itself.

Using the analogy of light travelling through an optical fibre — and eventually around a ring — we explore how increasing intelligence may create the conditions for recursion.

And from that recursion, something extraordinary begins to emerge.

A centre.

A continuity.

A sense of...

me.

Perhaps the loop isn't a failure of the human mind.

Perhaps...

it is one of its greatest achievements.

Talk 18 — When Intelligence Reaches Its Limit13 juil. 202600:12:00

As Physical Intelligence develops, awareness becomes increasingly guided.

Memory deepens. Prediction improves. The loop becomes more sophisticated, and the sense of me becomes increasingly coherent.

But can that process continue indefinitely?

In this talk, we explore the possibility that every structure has limits — and that recursive awareness may exist within a window of coherence.

Perhaps increasing intelligence does not mean increasing consciousness. Perhaps what changes is the structure through which awareness is experienced.

And perhaps the extraordinary sophistication of the human mind has created a self-referential loop that works...

almost too well.

If so, freedom may not come from adding still more complexity.

Perhaps it begins when the structure can hold awareness...

a little less tightly.

Talk 19 — Living Freedom Within the Structure12 juil. 202600:11:18

The mind remains.

The self remains.

Physical Intelligence remains.

So what does freedom actually mean?

In this final talk, we bring together the ideas explored throughout the previous three talks and ask what happens when awareness is no longer held quite so tightly by the structure of the mind.

Thought can still appear. Memory remains. We can still plan, reason, create and navigate our lives.

But perhaps every experience doesn't need to return so completely to me.

As self-reference begins to soften, awareness becomes a little less constrained — not because consciousness has expanded, and not because anything new has been created.

The room was always there.

Perhaps there is simply...

more of it available to us.

And maybe awakening isn't about becoming something greater.

Perhaps it is something much quieter.

A remembering.

Talk 20 — When Life Touches You10 juil. 202600:07:27

Why do we keep replaying something that hurt us? Why is it so difficult to let go of an argument? And what happens when life simply refuses to go the way we planned?Living With Less Me is a four-part exploration of the way our thoughts, emotions and sense of self shape the ordinary moments of our lives.Through hurt, disagreement, disappointment and uncertainty, these talks explore what happens when an experience becomes my experience — and how quickly the mind can turn a moment into a story about who we are. This isn't about suppressing emotions, stopping thought or becoming detached from life. It's about learning to experience life more directly — feeling what we feel without every thought, argument or disappointment having to define us.Perhaps letting go doesn't mean caring less.Perhaps it simply means carrying less.

Talk 21 — When You Need to Be Right09 juil. 202600:08:36

Have you ever known that an argument no longer matters — and still found yourself unable to let it go?

We replay what was said. We construct better responses. We defend our position. And sometimes, long after the conversation has ended, we're still trying to prove that we were right.

In When You Need to Be Right, we explore what may really be happening in those moments — and why disagreement can sometimes feel like something much more personal.

This isn't about never having opinions or simply agreeing with everyone. Sometimes we are right. Sometimes something genuinely matters.

But what happens when being right becomes something we need?

What are we actually defending?

And what might change if disagreement no longer had to feel like a threat to who we are?
Perhaps letting go doesn't mean admitting we were wrong.

Perhaps sometimes it simply means discovering that we no longer need to win.

When You Need to Be Right is Talk 2 of Living With Less Me, a four-part series exploring overthinking, emotional reactions, relationships, disagreement, disappointment, letting go and what happens when me doesn't have to sit at the centre of every experience.

Talk 22 — When Life Doesn't Go to Plan08 juil. 202600:09:58

Have you ever looked at something that happened in your life and thought: this wasn't supposed to happen?

A relationship ends. An opportunity disappears. Somebody changes their mind. A plan you've worked toward suddenly falls apart.

Sometimes what happens is deeply painful. But alongside the pain, something else can begin: the mind compares the life that is actually happening with the life we thought should have happened.

In When Life Doesn't Go to Plan, we explore what happens when reality and expectation collide — and why we can spend so much time arguing with something that has already occurred.

This isn't about giving up, thinking positively or pretending disappointment and loss don't hurt. We can still make plans, pursue what matters to us and change the things that can be changed.

But what happens when something cannot be changed?

Can we experience disappointment without allowing it to define us? Can we let go of the future we imagined without withdrawing from the life that is still here?

Perhaps acceptance doesn't mean saying, “I wanted this.”

Perhaps it simply begins with: “This is what is here.”

When Life Doesn't Go to Plan is Talk 3 of Living With Less Me, a four-part series exploring overthinking, disappointment, relationships, emotional reactions, letting go, acceptance and how we meet the parts of life we cannot control.

Talk 23 — Living With Less Me07 juil. 202600:09:55

What would life feel like if everything that happened didn't have to become quite so personal?

We still have thoughts. Emotions. Opinions. Plans. We still get irritated, disappointed and occasionally become completely unreasonable.

Living with less me doesn't mean becoming detached from life or losing who we are.

Perhaps it means something much quieter.

A thought appears — and we don't always have to follow it.

Something goes wrong — and we don't have to spend hours arguing with the fact that it happened.

Someone disagrees with us — and we don't immediately have to defend ourselves.

In Living With Less Me, we explore what happens when we stop placing ourselves quite so firmly in the middle of every experience — and how that might create more room for attention, relationships, presence and the ordinary life already happening around us.

This isn't about becoming permanently peaceful or learning how never to get lost in thought.

We will get lost.

Perhaps the important thing is discovering that we can return.

Again and again.

Maybe freedom isn't freedom from thought, from difficulty or from ourselves.

Maybe it's simply the freedom to be here for the life that is already happening.

Living With Less Me is the fourth and final talk in the Living With Less Me series — an exploration of hurt, relationships, disappointment, letting go, overthinking and what it might mean to live with a little less me in the middle of everything.

Talk 24 — When Explanation Meets Experience06 juil. 202600:04:23

In this new series, we turn outward.

Throughout the earlier talks, we explored the human condition primarily from the inside — thought, identity, suffering, stillness and consciousness.

Now I want to place some of those observations beside other ways human beings have tried to understand the mind: cognitive science, psychology, philosophy, contemplative traditions and myth.

Not because they are saying the same thing.

And not because one proves the other.

What interests me is something quieter.

Sometimes, they seem to rhyme.

Different languages. Different methods. Different ways of looking — occasionally revealing strangely familiar patterns.

This is When Explanation Meets Experience..

Talk 25 — The Mind That Keeps Returning05 juil. 202600:11:31

Why does the mind keep returning to certain thoughts?

A worry. A memory. An old conversation. Something we wish we'd said. Something we're afraid might happen.

In this talk, we begin with a simple observation: thoughts don't merely appear. Some of them return.

We explore what happens when repetition creates familiarity, familiarity creates relevance, and what becomes relevant begins attracting more of our attention.

And then we take the question one step further.

What happens when the things that repeatedly return don't simply shape what we think about — but begin shaping who we think we are?

This is the first talk in When Explanation Meets Experience, a series exploring what happens when different ways of understanding the human mind are placed beside one another.

Different languages. Different methods. Different ways of looking.

Sometimes, they rhyme.

Talk 26 — The World We Don't See04 juil. 202600:12:53

How much of the world around us do we actually notice?

At any moment, there is vastly more happening around us than we can possibly experience. Sounds, sensations, movements, faces, memories, possibilities — something has to be selected.

In this talk, we explore how attention and relevance help shape the world that enters our experience.

The same airport can become a completely different place depending on whether we're late for a flight or searching for someone we love. The same street can change when we're frightened. A familiar object can contain an entire life when we're grieving.

The physical world may not have changed.

But our experience of it has.

And that leads us to an image we've encountered before:

The window.

Perhaps we don't simply look at the world. Perhaps we always look through something — a human mind, a human body, a history, memories, expectations and a particular structure of attention.

And eventually this raises a more unsettling question:

What happens when we mistake the window for the world?

Talk 27 — How the Self Is Built03 juil. 202600:13:35

What exactly is the self — and how does the mind construct the person we experience as “me”?

In this talk, we explore how memory, identity, experience and attention become organized around a sense of self — and what happens to the parts of ourselves that don't fit the story we have learned to tell about who we are.

We look at the boundary between what we include and exclude, how rejected parts of ourselves can continue to shape our behaviour, and why even familiar suffering can become strangely difficult to leave behind.

Drawing connections between cognitive science, psychology and lived experience, this talk asks whether the self is something fixed — or something far more dynamic, continually remembered, anticipated, defended and organized.

And perhaps the deepest question isn't whether the self is real.

Perhaps the deeper question is:

What kind of reality does the self have?

Talk 28 — When the Mind Becomes Myth02 juil. 202600:13:48

Why do human beings turn fear into monsters, uncertainty into wilderness, and the parts of ourselves we don't want to see into shadows?

Long before psychology, neuroscience or cognitive science, human beings were already trying to understand what it meant to be human — through story.

In this talk, we explore how myth and story can give form to experiences that are otherwise difficult to see: fear, loss, identity, fragmentation and transformation.

Story doesn't necessarily explain the machinery of the mind. It does something different. It allows us to inhabit an experience — to enter the forest, approach the locked door, encounter the shadow, and perhaps recognize something of ourselves.

This isn't an argument that mythology, psychology and cognitive science are describing the same thing. They aren't interchangeable.

But sometimes, when we place these different ways of understanding human experience beside one another, something interesting happens.

They rhyme.

And perhaps the question isn't whether they agree.

Perhaps the more interesting question is:

Where do they converge?

Talk 29 — When Explanation Ends01 juil. 202600:14:00

What happens when different ways of understanding the human mind begin to point toward strangely familiar territory?

Throughout this series, we've explored the mind from several directions — cognitive science, psychology, contemplative experience and story.

They are not the same thing. They use different methods, different languages and have different purposes. None of them proves the others.

But sometimes... they converge.

In this final talk, we explore what happens when explanation meets experience — and why understanding the mind is not the same as actually seeing what the mind is doing.

A thought appears.

It disappears.

And then it returns.

Perhaps the important question isn't always why it returned.

Perhaps, sometimes, the important thing is simply to notice it.

Because between the return of a thought and our identification with it, there may be a small space.

And perhaps that space is more important than it first appears.

Science can help us explain.

Psychology can help us understand.

Myth can help us recognize.

Contemplative experience can help us look.

But eventually...

there is just this.

A thought appears.

Perhaps it returns.

But this time...

we see it.
