This fall, we’re exploring Inventory.
Not just the retail kind — counting what’s on the shelf — but inventory as a felt thing. September hits with so much “new, start, go” energy, and it’s easy to get swept up and reactive instead of deliberate. My approach, in life and in my work with clients, is building for longevity: making deliberate moves instead of reactive ones.
A few real things prompted this theme for me this fall — my oldest starting full-day kindergarten and suddenly handing me hours in the day I haven’t had in a long time, a client contract pausing at the end of September, and our youngest turning two in November, while we are decidedly not continuing to grow our family. That’s a real chapter closing, and it’s opened up capacity I didn’t expect.
All of that is inventory in action: taking stock of systems, structures, commitments, obligations, intuition, energy — and then recalibrating based on what you find. Restocking, adjusting, adding, subtracting. Inventory only matters if it’s followed by action — it’s not the opposite of doing, it’s what makes the right action possible instead of a reactive one.
I also get into the very meta reality that this show itself is an act of inventory — how Meant for Sharing, my old blog-turned-Substack, wasn’t sustainable, and how taking stock of that revealed the problem wasn’t the writing, it was digital media’s expectation of a consistent cadence. Audio removed that friction. And letting go of the pressure to publish has actually brought writing back into my life — just for the sake of writing.
Over the next 12 weeks, I’ll be exploring inventory from a lot of angles, including a few guest conversations — someone who took stock and got more ambitious, someone whose actual job is assessment and analysis, and someone who audited their own personal standards.
