Is the Traditional Ski Week Dead? | The Whiteout Ski Podcast LIVE from Manchester

Recorded live at The Snow Centre Manchester during the Northern Snow Show on 3 October 2026.

We're doing things a little differently for this episode of The Whiteout Ski Podcast!

Join Dom Killinger from InTheSnow and Rob Stewart from Ski Press as we take the podcast on the road, recording in front of a live audience at the Northern Snow Show in Manchester.

Please excuse the slightly different sound quality, occasional interruptions and general chaos of a live recording! There's plenty of audience participation, a few unexpected questions and, as always, plenty of friendly disagreement between Dom and Rob.

Our big question this week: Is the traditional seven night ski holiday becoming a thing of the past?

With more skiers choosing shorter, more flexible trips, we explore whether the classic Saturday to Saturday ski week is losing its appeal, and whether three or four days in the mountains might actually be the better option.

But that's not all. We also look ahead to the 2026/27 winter season, discussing everything from snow predictions and British ski racing to new ski gear, rising resort prices and the destinations we're most excited about.

WHAT'S IN THIS EPISODE?

• Will El Niño deliver a bumper winter? We discuss the early season snow outlook, glacier conditions and why autumn snowfall doesn't necessarily tell us much about the winter ahead.

• The biggest stories of 2026/27: The Alpine World Championships in Crans-Montana, the end of Ski Sunday and the exciting future of British ski racing with the Carrick-Smith brothers.

• Is the traditional ski week dead? Why shorter ski breaks are becoming increasingly popular, the advantages of flexible travel and whether a long weekend can really replace a full week.

• What really matters when choosing a ski resort? Huge ski areas, snow reliability, lift infrastructure or simply the price of a beer?

• The evolution of après-ski: Why live music and afternoon parties are becoming an increasingly important part of the ski holiday experience.

• What's new in ski gear? BOA ski boots, easier entry boot designs, avalanche transceivers and our ongoing obsession with ski goggles.

• Where should you ski this winter? From Baqueira and Serre Chevalier to Norway, Andorra and the Alps, we discuss destinations offering something different.

• Live audience questions: Low light goggles, ski technology, favourite resorts, stag dos and a few unexpected holiday plans!

Are Ski Shows Dead? And Is Alpine Skiing Boring?09 oct. 202600:28:27

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

I woke up in somebody's  chalet in Verbier dressed as Luke Sywalker, Are ski shows still worth visiting, or can you now find everything you need online? And has someone really suggested that skiing in the Alps is boring?

Dom Killinger from InTheSnow and Rob Stewart from Ski Press are back with another helping of ski news, opinions, snow reports, gear and the occasional disagreement.

Fresh from taking The Whiteout on stage at the Northern Snow Show in Manchester, we're looking ahead to the London Snow Show at Olympia on 17–18 October. With ski legends, Olympic stars, the latest equipment and destinations from around the world, there's plenty on offer. But would we actually pay to go if we weren't working there?

Then Rob gets fired up about an American ski magazine article suggesting that skiing in the Alps is, well, a bit boring. Is there any truth in it, or has the writer completely missed what makes European skiing so special?

Here's what's coming up:

Are ski shows still worth going to?

With endless ski resort reviews, YouTube videos, equipment tests and holiday advice available online, do ski shows still have a place? We debate what makes a great show, whether they're worth the ticket price and what we'd change if we were running one.

Is skiing in the Alps really boring?

An opinion piece in SKI magazine has got Rob rather worked up. We get into the differences between European and North American skiing, challenging terrain, local knowledge and whether the Alps deserve the criticism.

London Snow Show 2026

We're looking forward to the London Snow Show at Olympia on 17–18 October, featuring names including Dave Ryding, Mia Brookes, Charlotte Bankes, Matt Weston, Eddie the Eagle and Warren Smith.

We'll be recording The Whiteout live on both days, and joining Chemmy Alcott on Saturday for A Question of Snow. Come and say hello!

November skiing: Is it worth the gamble?

With resorts including Val Thorens preparing for their winter openings, we discuss whether November skiing is a clever way to get an early fix or too much of a risk for your main ski holiday.

Where's the Snow?

Our regular look at snow conditions, early-season skiing and where we'd consider heading for some turns.

Ski gear: Is BOA changing ski boots?

We take a look at the Salomon S/Pro Alpha C BOA ski boots and discuss what really matters when buying ski equipment. Can clever technology improve fit and performance, and why is trying boots on in person so important?

Seasonnaire Confessions

We finish with another tale from life working in the mountains. From the ridiculous to the downright unbelievable, there's never a dull moment when you're working a ski season.

Why Would Anyone Climb Everest 20 Times? – Kenton Cool Live from Basecamp05 juin 202600:45:49

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

The White Out Podcast – Live from Everest Base Camp with Kenton Cool

Dom Killinger and Rob Stewart speak live to British mountaineer and mountain guide Kenton Cool from Everest Base Camp, just days before he attempts his 20th summit of the world's highest mountain.

Broadcast directly from Nepal at an altitude of more than 5,300 metres, the interview offers a unique insight into life on Everest, the realities of high-altitude guiding and the challenges of leading clients in some of the world's most extreme environments.

Kenton discusses his journey from growing up in Buckinghamshire to becoming one of Britain's most accomplished mountaineers, his long-standing relationship with Nepal and the Sherpa community, and why he continues to return to Everest year after year.

The episode covers:

• Preparing for a 20th ascent of Everest

• Life at Everest Base Camp and how expeditions operate

• The physical and mental challenges of climbing at extreme altitude

• How mountain guides make difficult decisions under pressure

• The relationship between guides, Sherpas and clients

• Learning to ski as an adult in Chamonix

• Ski touring, mountaineering and skiing 8,000-metre peaks

• The similarities between guiding in the Alps and the Himalayas

• The rewards and responsibilities of being a mountain guide

• Why saying "no" is sometimes the most important decision a guide can make

The panel also discuss:

• Climate change and its impact on glaciers in the Alps and Himalayas

• The future of skiing in a warming climate

• Avalanche risk and decision-making in the mountains

• The next generation of climbers, skiers and mountaineers

• Skiing in Pakistan and other remote mountain regions

• Kenton's favourite ski destinations around the world

• The enduring appeal of the Arlberg ski region

Highlights include:

• Kenton speaking live from Everest Base Camp just before leaving for his summit push

• His reflections on nearly two decades of Everest expeditions

• Honest discussion about client pressure and mountain safety

• Insights into the effects of climate change on mountain environments

• Stories from Chamonix, Pakistan, Nepal and some of the world's biggest peaks

• Kenton's answer to The White Out's regular "one ski resort for life" question

Selected quotes from the show:

"Summits are kind of irrelevant. The number is irrelevant. It's the environment that I get to be in and working in."

"It is work. I'm an Everest guide. This is one of the ways I pay the mortgage."

"If it's good for climbing, it's crap for skiing. If it's good for skiing, it's crap for climbing."

"There is pressure on the mountain guide, whether it's here, whether it's the Matterhorn or skiing the Vallée Blanche."

"We are employed as guides for a reason. To be the decision maker."

"We think we've underestimated it. By the end of this century there won't be a single glacier left in Europe."

"If you're passionate about it, just do it."

Skiing Japan: Tokyo to Hakuba – The Ultimate Ski Trip Guide10 avr. 202600:38:18

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

So… what’s skiing Hakuba Valley really like? 🇯🇵⛷️

After flying 14 hours to Japan, we decided to start this trip properly — with a couple of days exploring Tokyo before heading into the mountains. And honestly, it set the tone for one of the most memorable ski trips we’ve ever done.

From incredible street food at Tsukiji Market, to temples in Asakusa, vintage shopping in Shimokitazawa, and the chaos of Shibuya Crossing — Tokyo delivered.

Then it was time for the main event…

✈️ Getting There

We flew with Japan Airlines — and it was genuinely one of the best long-haul flights I’ve taken. Great food, spotless planes, and next-level service throughout.

For parking at the airport, check out 👉 APH Parking: https://www.aph.com/

And if you're travelling, I’d highly recommend an eSIM — we used 👉 Holafly (unlimited data): https://holafly.sjv.io/LKWN20

🚄 From Tokyo to Hakuba

Getting to Hakuba Valley is surprisingly easy:
Bullet train (Shinkansen) from Tokyo to Nagano
Then a short bus transfer into the valley
In under 4 hours, you’re in the mountains.

⛷️ Skiing Hakuba Valley

Hakuba isn’t just one resort — it’s an entire valley made up of 10 different ski areas, all connected by the Hakuba Valley lift pass.

👉 Learn more about the resorts here:
https://www.inthesnow.com/hakuba-valley/

Across the valley you’ll find:
~120 ski runs
~90 lifts
~Terrain for every level from pow and tree skiing to wide open greens and blues to your hearts content

Each resort has its own personality — from beginner-friendly slopes to deep powder and tree skiing.

🏔️ Where We Skied

Over the week we explored:

Cortina & Norikura – deep powder, tree skiing, quieter vibe

Happo-One – Olympic runs, big vertical, incredible views

Hakuba 47 & Goryu – varied terrain + night skiing

Iwatake – some of the best views in the valley

We even hit a couple of proper powder days — the kind Japan is famous for ❄️

🏨 Where We Stayed

Hotel Green Plaza (Cortina) – ski-in ski-out, right on the slopes
https://greenplazahakuba.com-hotel.info/

Mominoki Hotel (Happo) – great location + onsen
https://hakubamominoki.com-hotel.info/

Hotel Keisui (Iwatake area)
https://www.keisui.jp/english/

🍜 Why Japan Is Different

Skiing in Japan isn’t just about the snow (although the powder is unreal).
It’s:
Incredible food (ramen, gyoza, wagyu…)
A completely different ski culture
Immaculate cleanliness everywhere
Friendly, welcoming people
Onsens after skiing (game changer)

❄️ So… is Hakuba worth it?

Absolutely.

You’re not skiing one mega-resort like in Europe — you’re exploring an entire valley, choosing different ski areas each day depending on conditions.

And that’s what makes it so special.

If you’ve been thinking about skiing in Japan…

Just do it.

What Really Goes On Behind the Scenes of a Ski Holiday? – Crystal Ski Holidays27 févr. 202600:30:40

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

The human side of Crystal — insight, passion, expertise and the decisions customers don’t usually see.

This Episode was recorded around four core questions:

  • What are your hidden gems?
  • What do you wish more customers knew?
  • Where’s the best value without compromise?
  • What shouldn’t customers miss this winter?

2. Hidden gems – Crystal team favourites

Crystal colleagues share the resorts they genuinely love and return to.  Resorts offering: Better value, Fewer crowds, Access to big ski areas, More character and authenticity

  • Brides-les-Bains – Three Valleys access with spa-town value and calm evenings
  • Châtel – Authentic Savoyard village with tree-lined skiing and family appeal
  • Montalbert – Quiet, charming base with easy access to La Plagne
  • Vaujany – Peaceful village with fast links into Alpe d’Huez terrain
  • Leogang – Small, quiet base plugged into a huge Austrian ski area
  • Galtür – Traditional Tyrolean charm with access to the wider Silvretta area
  • Serfaus–Fiss–Ladis – One of Austria’s strongest family ski regions
  • Folgarida – Relaxed base with access to the Campiglio ski area
  • Santa Cristina (Val Gardena) – Authentic village in the heart of Dolomiti Superski
  • Pila – Quiet, family-friendly skiing with easy access and good snow reliability

Key message:

  • These resorts often deliver big-area skiing without the big-area stress

3. Satellite resorts – the smart choices Crystal loves

What a satellite resort is: Just outside headline resorts, Same lift system, same terrain.

Why Crystal advisers recommend them:

  • Better prices
  • Shorter queues
  • Easier availability
  • More relaxed atmosphere
  • Crystal insight:
    • “People book the name, but miss the value next door”

4. Best value without compromise

Andorra consistently rated highly by Crystal staff

Why: Extensive terrain, Modern lift systems, Excellent ski schools, Good food and après, Straightforward logistics - It’s smart, smooth, high-quality skiing

5. What Crystal wishes more customers knew

Don’t dismiss lower-altitude resorts:

  • Often closer to airports
  • Better value
  • Great for families
  • Well-linked to major ski domains
  • Example:
    • Morzine base → Avoriaz → Portes du Soleil access
  • Reassurance:
    • Crystal’s Snow Promise
    • Customer-first approach if conditions aren’t right

What Does It Take to Race at the Winter Olympics? – Eddie the Eagle & Charlie Guest25 févr. 202601:02:05

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

Winter Olympics Special - sponsored by Crystal Ski Holidays

In this week’s special Winter Olympics episode, we’ve got an absolute cracker.

We’re joined by TNT Sports presenter and former Olympian Charlie Guest, who shares what she loved most about the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, what it was really like being there on the ground, and which British athletes we should be watching as the next generation builds momentum. From historic breakthroughs to near misses, she gives us her expert take on the future of Team GB on snow and ice.

We also sit down with the one and only Eddie the Eagle Edwards. Eddie talks candidly about what it really takes to become an Olympic ski jumper, how different the pathway looks today compared to his era, and why he doesn’t actually follow the sport as closely anymore. As always, he brings honesty, perspective and a few laughs along the way.

And of course, we dive into the stories that made these Games unforgettable. From 52 year old Austrian snowboarders defying age, to political controversy on the slopes, broken Olympic medals, funky skeleton helmets being banned, weather chaos, viral suit reveals, backflips in figure skating, and even a rogue wolfdog called Nazgul interrupting cross country racing. Yes, really.

We touch on Team GB’s historic snowboard cross gold, the big winners and heartbreak stories, and the bizarre off piste drama that included public confessions and that ski jumping controversy everyone was talking about.

It’s insight, opinion, drama and plenty of weird and wonderful Olympic moments — so let’s get stuck in.

Is the Winter Olympics Still the Greatest Show on Snow?06 févr. 202600:53:24

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

Intro + Sponsor

Dom welcomes listeners to The White Out Podcast in partnership with Crystal Ski Holidays, joined by co-host Rob Stewart (Ski Press). Rob throws to Crystal for the sponsor message. Back from the ad, quick welcome and tease: Olympics, news, weather, Crystal feature, gear and destination interview.

Olympics 2026: GB Reality Check

Key theme: not a medal-table pod, but what counts as a good GB result. Milano-Cortina runs 6–22 Feb 2026.

GB’s strongest medal potential is in snowboard slopestyle/big air, snowboard cross, and freeski halfpipe/park. Highlight the main names: Mia Brookes (real podium/medal chance), Charlotte Bankes (top medal route), Zoe Atkin (podium possible), plus Txema Mazet-Brown, Kirsty Muir, and Gus Kenworthy as strong finals/top-10 prospects.

In alpine, success is measured differently: clean runs, second runs, top-20/top-15 results. Mention Dave Ryding, Laurie Taylor, and Billy Major.

Cross-Country + Biathlon

Cross-country in Tesero: Andrew Musgrave, James Clugnet, Joe Davies, Anna Pryce. Targets are PBs and strong finishes.
Biathlon in Antholz: Jacques Jefferies and Shawna Pendry, focus on clean shooting and experience.

Crystal Feature: Ski Train Holidays

Crystal’s ski train option is a fun alternative to flying: relaxed travel, café onboard, generous luggage and ski carriage. Routes from London via Paris or Lille to Tarentaise resorts. Mention booking from July and flag a deal example.

Gear (Ellis Brigham)

Are the Nordics the Future of Skiing? With Crystal Ski Holidays30 janv. 202600:32:28

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

Today, we’re asking:  Are the Nordic countries the future of skiing?

Snow reliability thanks to colder climates and smart snow management, Quieter slopes with minimal lift queues, Excellent beginner and family environments, Something genuinely different from the Alps

🧘 A totally different ski experience

No early-morning rush, Relaxed resort layouts, Plenty of room to progress, lap runs and ski at your own pace, It’s skiing without the stress — paired with beautiful landscapes and a gentle, low-pressure holiday vibe.

✈️ Transfers: a huge hidden advantage

Many Finnish and Swedish resorts are under an hour from the airport, Levi is around 10 minutes away.  Norway transfers can be longer, but the scenery is spectacular.  Short transfers are a game-changer for families, short breaks and anyone who wants to be skiing as quickly as possible.

🏠 Accommodation that really works

Nordic accommodation is ideal for families, groups and mixed abilities: Spacious apartments, cosy log cabins and high-quality hotels. Excellent self-catering options. A standout feature: private saunas in many rooms or cabins

🐕 Beyond skiing: the Nordic excursion culture

A huge part of the Nordic appeal is the range of winter experiences, many of which can be pre-booked:  Dog sledding, Snowmobiling, Snowshoeing, Fat biking, Horse-drawn sleigh rides, Northern Lights tours

Night skiing: extending the ski day

Evening skiing often included in the lift pass, Quiet pistes, soft lighting and crisp Arctic air, A magical, cinematic experience that adds serious value, Some resorts even power lifts and snowmaking using renewable hydroelectric energy.

Spotlight: Finland – the Arctic winter experience

Resorts like Salla, Pyhä and Ruka offer tranquil forests, wide pistes and a true Arctic feel. Magical scenery and peaceful skiing. A strong chance — but never a guarantee — of seeing the Northern Lights. Perfect for families, first-timers and those wanting a complete winter experience, not just mileage.

Spotlight: Norway – scenery on a grand scale

Norway combines skiing with unforgettable scenery: Beautifully groomed slopes and reliable snow, Fjord views and stunning mountain landscapes.  Resorts like Voss and Myrkdalen pair skiing with once-in-a-lifetime sightseeing

Spotlight: Sweden – calm, friendly and family-first

Swedish resorts shine for families and learners: Resorts like Kläppen, Stöten and Hundfjället.  Dedicated children’s areas, mascots, themed ski zones and gentle progression.  Relaxed villages, approachable terrain and excellent organisation.  It’s skiing designed to be enjoyable, stress-free and welcoming.

In E3, we go long haul — when skiing becomes a true bucket-list skiing.

Why Short Ski Breaks Really Work - with Crystal Ski Holiday16 janv. 202600:28:09

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

Beyond The Basics, in association with Crystal Ski Holidays — your one-stop shop for brilliantly planned ski holidays.

Across this four-episode series, we’re digging a little deeper into smarter ways to ski, new destinations to consider, and how to get more out of your time in the mountains — whether it’s a long weekend or a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

❄️ This episode: Short Ski Breaks — do they really work?

⏱️ Why short breaks make sense

  • Perfect for long weekends, bank holidays and last-minute snow fixes
  • Ideal for experienced skiers wanting a “top-up trip” or to ski more often through the season
  • Easier to fit around work, family and real life
  • Still delivers great skiing, lively après, and a proper feeling of escape

Short doesn’t mean less. With the right planning, you still get:

Plenty of slope time, Great food and après, A new destination ticked off, Time away with friends or family

And with Crystal handling flights, transfers and accommodation in one simple booking, decision fatigue disappears — you just focus on skiing.

🏔️ Destinations that work brilliantly for short stays

We explore why some resorts are perfectly suited to 3–4 day trips, including:

  • France – Big terrain, high altitude, iconic après and Thursday–Sunday long-weekend formats
  • Austria – Charming villages, warm hospitality and classic Alpine vibes, ideal for couples and groups
  • Switzerland – Flexible arrival days, scenic train transfers and smooth logistics
  • Norway – Immaculate pistes, compact resorts and excellent tuition for skill-building weekends
  • Slovenia – Easy access, smaller ski areas and a very different, scenic Alpine experience
  • Canada (Tremblant) – A taste of North America as a long-haul short break, with big-trip energy in just a few days

Short breaks also open the door to destinations you might not choose for a full week — especially smaller resorts where value, ease and atmosphere really shine.

✨ What makes Crystal short breaks stand out

  • The same full Crystal service you’d expect from a week-long holiday
  • Options to add lift passes, equipment hire and more
  • Self-drive and ski-train options available
  • Clear pre-departure information, step-by-step travel guidance and 24/7 phone support

🔜 Coming up next we’ll ask a big question: Are the Nordic countries the future of skiing?

Make sure you’re subscribed — and we’ll see you in the next episode of The Whiteout Ski Podcast 🎧❄️

The Best of BC's Powder Highway - Panorama & Fernie19 déc. 202501:12:07

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

INTRO

Early-season legs are back. Gym-fit doesn’t mean ski-fit, and Dom and Rob kick things off with a familiar first-week-on-snow reality check. Take it easy, warm up properly, stretch after skiing, and accept that skiing fitness only really comes from skiing. Expect useful advice, unnecessary movie references and the usual White Out chaos.

NEWS

In the news, there’s good news for anyone driving to the Alps this winter. The EU Entry/Exit System has been delayed again, easing fears of Channel crossing delays at peak times. The Post Office Travel Money Ski Resort Report also lands, with Italy once again dominating the value charts, while Nordic resorts continue to rise as strong, family-friendly alternatives. We also look at a new report revealing where celebrities ski — Aspen, Courchevel, Verbier, St Moritz, Zermatt and Whistler Blackcomb — and why these resorts continue to attract the A-list.

WHERE IS BEST TO SKI NOW

Snow-wise, the Alps are delivering solid piste skiing despite recent warmth, while attention shifts west. Conditions in British Columbia are shaping up well, reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s great ski regions.

GEAR BUYERS GUIDE WITH ELLIS BRIGHAM MOUNTAIN SPORTS

Gear time, in association with Ellis Brigham, covers standout kit for the season including the Rossignol Arcade W 84, Nordica Unlimited 94, Dalbello Veloce Space boots, Scott’s Women’s Ultimate GTX jacket and Dolomite’s 54 High FG Evo GTX. Dual BOA boots, ZipFit liners, Thermic insoles and slope comms all get a mention as winter shopping ramps up.

DESTINATION BC

The Destination Guide is all about British Columbia this week. We’re joined by Jamie from Panorama Mountain Resort, who describes the resort in three words: destination, friendly and adventure. Panorama offers big vertical, wide-open terrain and uncrowded skiing high above the Columbia Valley — a proper Powder Highway classic.

We then head further along the Powder Highway to Fernie Alpine Resort, joined by Powder Matt. Fernie is renowned for its five alpine bowls, legendary tree skiing and consistent snowfall, paired with one of Canada’s best-loved ski towns.

If the Powder Highway isn’t already on your list, it probably should be.

Slope-side with Dave Ryding and Billie Major at Gurgl World Cup Race Weekend22 nov. 202500:15:12

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

In this special race-weekend episode, we’re coming to you live from Gurgl, where the atmosphere is electric and the world’s best slalom skiers have gathered to kick off the season in style. Team GB are out in force — and we’ve got exclusive access.

Opening

We’re in Obergurgl for a packed World Cup weekend, with heavy snowfall and temps down to –12°C.  Conditions totally different to Levi, adding unpredictability. Ben is on the ground with interviews and reaction.

Feature Interview — Dave Ryding

Pre-Race Mindset

Racing in his sponsor resort brings extra pressure: “You never want to let people down.”  Focus stays on routine, headspace, and controlling what he can.

Form After Levi

Encouraged by a strong opener but realistic about expectations at 39. Confident he’s still competitive.

Why Obergurgl Feels Like Home

Nearly a decade linked with the resort. Loves the support and familiarity.

Race Preparation

Treats every World Cup and Olympic race the same: same schedule, same process.  Values a polished routine and consistency.

Superstitions

None, beyond putting the right boot on first.  Past podium bibs don’t influence him anymore.

Final Season

Retiring to spend more time with family and reduce physical strain.  Post-ski plans include freeride days, mentoring young racers, and exploring new roles.

Next Gen GB Racers

Huge belief in Laurie Taylor and Billy Major, and excitement around younger athletes like the Kerrigan-Smith brothers and Molly Butler.  Dave: “The future is bright for British skiing.”

Race Day Recap

Dave Ryding

Finished 25th.  Skied conservatively in run two, likely due to pressure.  Points on the board but below expectations.

Billy Major

Finished 17th, one of his best WC results.  Built confidence through the day; second run much stronger.

Laurie Taylor

Missed run two after last week’s superb 4th in Levi.  Challenging winter-snow conditions caught many racers out.

Skiing in Alberta - is this as good as it gets?14 nov. 202500:36:14

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

Skiing Alberta with Ski Independence

In this episode, we’re joined by Karen and Ross, two true experts on skiing in Alberta, from our headline sponsors, Ski Independence. Together, we explore why Alberta is a must-visit destination for ski lovers and families alike.

Key Highlights:

  • Getting to Alberta:
Alberta is in Western Canada, near the British Columbia border. Direct flights from Heathrow to Calgary make it easy to access, with under two hours to Banff via car or shuttle. Hiring a car is optional, as shuttles are efficient and convenient.
  • Top Ski Resorts:
    • Banff & Lake Louise: Linked via lift passes, offering expansive terrain and excellent snow conditions, with skiing possible well into May.
    • Sunshine Village: Long season, spectacular views, and the chance to ski in optimal powder conditions.
    • Jasper: Quieter, peaceful, and perfect for those seeking a more serene mountain experience.
  • Travel & Scenery:
Driving along the Icefields Parkway to Jasper is highly recommended, with breathtaking landscapes and wildlife sightings. Alberta combines dramatic scenery with manageable travel distances between resorts.
  • Weather & Snow:
Alberta has dry cold temperatures, which preserve snow quality. Expect consistent snow conditions throughout the season, similar to the Alps but with fewer crowds.
  • Luxury & Accommodation:
    • Fairmont Lake Louise & Fairmont Banff Springs: Iconic luxury stays with spa experiences and proximity to slopes.
    • Jasper Park Lodge: Cabin-style accommodation set in nature for a serene and wildlife-rich stay.
    • Banff Town Hotels: A range of 3–5 star options for all budgets, with modern facilities and boutique experiences.
  • Family-Friendly Skiing:
Alberta is ideal for families, offering ski schools, flexible lift passes, and plenty of non-ski activities like wildlife tours, sleigh rides, and frozen waterfall walks. Kids can enjoy the mountains without the pressure to ski every day.
  • Tips & Experiences:
    • Consider a triple-center stay: Banff Springs → Lake Louise → Jasper for a full Alberta adventure.
    • Take advantage of early booking deals for the best value and availability.
    • Local expertise enhances the trip—guides and locals offer insights on hidden gems and activities.
  • Bucket List Destination:
Alberta is described as a must-see ski destination, combining luxury, adventure, nature, and wide-open slopes that cater to both families and serious skiers.

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

Welcome back to Skiing 101 - a 4 part mini-series in association with Crystal Ski Holidays! This series is designed to help you feel confident and prepared for your first ski holiday.

Episode 4 is all about:

The essentials for first-time skiers.

For packing, make sure to bring waterproof ski jacket and pants, thermal base layers, ski socks, gloves, a helmet, and goggles. A neck gaiter and comfy après-ski clothes are also important. They recommend booking rental gear in advance, with rentals for skis and boots available at the resort. It's also important to get a proper fit, especially for ski boots.

Ski lessons are key for confidence, with group lessons being budget-friendly and private lessons offering personalized instruction. Practice on an indoor slope beforehand if you’re nervous. Safety tips include wearing a helmet, skiing within your skill level, and staying visible. Hydrate, take breaks, and check the weather daily.

Dom and Rob also highlight mountain etiquette, like yielding to skiers below you, and enjoying resort activities beyond skiing, such as snowmobiling or visiting spas. Après-ski vibes vary by resort, from lively spots to quiet settings.

Lastly, for beginners, Crystal Ski package holidays take care of logistics, making it easier to focus on enjoying your trip, from ski hire to accommodation and ski school. Skiing is for everyone—embrace the experience, progress at your own pace, and create unforgettable memories!

This final episode in a 4 part mini series, in partnership with Crystal Ski Holidays, wraps up the mini-series with everything you need to know to ensure a smooth and enjoyable first ski holiday!

A Beginners Guide to Skiing - How? Why? Where?07 févr. 202500:35:40

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

Welcome to Skiing 101 - a 4 part mini-series in association with Crystal Ski Holidays! This series is designed to help you feel confident and prepared for your first ski holiday.

Episode 1 is all about:

  1. Understanding Your Travel Party:
    • Kids: If you're bringing little ones, look for ski schools and childcare options, like dedicated kids' zones and après-ski activities. Resorts such as La Plagne (France) and Zell am See (Austria) are fantastic for families.
    • Adults: Consider the fitness levels and interests of your group. Some adults might prefer quieter resorts or scenic spots where they can relax, while others might be more active. Resorts like Alpe d’Huez (France) and Soldeu (Andorra) offer a variety of runs for all levels.
  2. Budgeting For Your Ski Trip:
    • Ski holidays can be expensive, but there are ways to save! Early booking, avoiding school holidays, and considering travel options like driving or train can reduce costs.
    • Crystal offers packages that include flights, transfers, accommodation, and more to simplify your trip planning.
  3. Choosing the Right Resort:
    • Some resorts are family-friendly with excellent kids' ski schools and activities, while others cater to adults looking for a lively après-ski scene. Resorts like Ruka (Finland) are perfect for beginners and families.
    • In Episode 2, we’ll dive deeper into finding the resort that suits your needs.
  4. Travel Options:
    • Flying: Quick and convenient, but may have hidden costs (e.g., parking and food).
    • Train: Comfortable and scenic, but transfers to the resort can add time and cost.
    • Driving: Offers flexibility and can be cost-effective for families, though weather conditions and long travel times need to be considered.
  5. Other Activities:
    • Skiing isn’t the only thing to do on your holiday! Snowshoeing, ice skating, spa visits, tobogganing, and even winter hiking are great alternatives for non-skiers or if you need a break from the slopes.
  6. Packing Essentials:
    • Clothing: Layer up with moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers.
    • Accessories: Don’t forget gloves, mittens, goggles, helmets, and ski socks (avoid cotton!).
    • Other Gear: Pre-purchase your ski pass, and pack a small backpack for snacks, water, and extra layers.
  7. Preparation Before the Holiday:
    • Consider taking indoor ski lessons or dry slopes lessons to get comfortable with the equipment and techniques.
    • Skiing can be physically demanding, so it’s also a good idea to prepare your body with strength, flexibility, and balance exercises.

Next time, we’ll guide you through resort options, accommodation choices, and more tips for a fantastic skiing experience.

Stay tuned for more tips, and don’t forget to check out Crystal Ski Holidays for all your ski holiday needs!

Location & Access:

  • Situated in Western Austria, where Tyrol and Vorarlberg meet, the Arlberg is easily accessible from airports in Innsbruck, Zurich, and Munich. The Arlberg Express shuttle connects directly to the region.

Snow & Skiing History:

  • The Arlberg gets an impressive 9 meters of snow annually, thanks to its high altitude and northern-facing slopes.
  • The region is legendary for ski history, with Hannes Schneider founding Austria’s first ski school in St. Anton in 1921 and introducing the first ski lift in Zürs in 1937.

Ski Area & Terrain:

  • Ski Arlberg is Austria’s largest ski area, with over 300 km of groomed slopes and 200 km of freeride terrain across all five resorts. Whether you're a beginner or advanced skier, there's terrain for all levels.

Resort Highlights:

  • St. Anton: Known for its après-ski, lively nightlife, and extreme terrain. Must-visit après spots include MooserWirt. The resort is a freeride mecca, with challenging runs and deep powder.
  • St. Christoph: A quieter, more exclusive option, ideal for those seeking a luxurious, private experience. The Hospiz hotel is a historic gem in the area.
  • Lech & Zürs: Lech is renowned for its high-end, refined atmosphere, offering wide, sunny slopes, gourmet dining, and top-tier shopping. Zürs is quieter and more upscale, with luxury chalets and fine dining. Both are perfect for those looking for a more laid-back and luxurious experience.

Dining & Après-Ski:

  • The Arlberg is famous for its dining, with Michelin-starred restaurants like Restaurant Schwärzler and Rote Wand. For a rustic mountain experience, try Trittalm or Zürserhof. Après-ski varies, with St. Anton being the wildest, while Lech and Zürs offer more relaxed, sophisticated après spots like Schneggarei and Hotel Arlberg’s Lounge.

Best Time to Visit:

  • Prime season is from January to March, but early December and April offer quieter options. The region’s snow retention ensures good conditions late into the season.

Other Activities:

  • The Arlberg is also great for non-skiing activities like snowshoeing, winter hiking, cross-country skiing, and ice skating.

Whether you're hitting the famous slopes of St. Anton, enjoying the refined charm of Lech, or exploring the freeride paradise of Zürs, the Arlberg offers an unforgettable ski holiday experience.

Destination - Isère - What's so special about this French Alpine Region?11 nov. 202400:32:24

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

In this special episode we are joined by Isère expert Katja Gaskell to dive into everything this region of the French Alps has to offer.  From iconic resorts like Alpe d'Huez and Les 2 Alpes to hidden gems like Les 7 Laux and Auris en Oisans, they cover it all.

Katja shares her extensive experience in the region, offering insights into the best ski resorts for families, ski enthusiasts, and those looking for something off the beaten path.

  1. Introduction to Isère:
    • Located in the French Alps, Isère is home to 21 ski resorts across 4 mountain ranges  the Belledonne, Chartreuse, Vercors and Oisan.
    • It includes big-name resorts like Alpe d’Huez and Les 2 Alpes, as well as lesser-known gems like Les 7 Laux and Auris en Oisans.
  2. Misconception about Val d'Isère:
    • Katja clears up the confusion between Isère and Val d’Isère, emphasising that while both are part of the Alps, they are in different regions.
  3. The Ski Resorts of Isère:
    • Alpe d'Huez & Les 2 Alpes: Popular resorts with major international appeal, new lifts, and exciting developments for the 2024 season (including World Cup events).
    • Hidden Gems: Resorts like Les 7 Laux (featured in S2, Ep. 13) and Auris en Oisans, which offer unique experiences for those looking for quieter, more authentic ski holidays.

Rafting, Canyoning and Climbing Everest02 juil. 202400:43:38

Drop us a message with any questions you may have :)

In this weeks episode we discussed all things canyoning and white water rafting. And recommended 2 sites to get some great info that include Manawa.com and awe365.com. We talked about where you can do this and what gear you're gonna need!!

We also explored the Portes Du Soleil area, that includes the towns of Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz and Chatel on the French side and Champéry, Morgins and Les Crosets on the Swiss side and everything that this superb area ha to offer.

And finally we took you on our bucket list trip to Route to Everest Base Camp itself.

We looked at that trek itself, what you need to do it, what gear you need, and how fit you need to be and exactly what the route looks like...

The journey to Everest Base Camp typically begins with a flight into Lukla Airport also known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport.
From Lukla, trekkers follow the legendary trail known as the Everest Base Camp Trek, which winds through picturesque Sherpa villages to Namche Bazaar (2,860 meters) to Namche Bazaar (3,440 meters), the busy hub of the Khumbu region. This stretch involves crossing suspension bridges over rivers, ascending stone staircases, and passing through dense forests of rhododendron and pine.

Then Acclimatization stops are planned at strategic points such as Namche itself

The next stage is Tengboche (3860) to Dingboche (4,410 meters) and then Lobuche (4,910 meters)
Then Lobuche onwards  the final leg to Everest Base Camp (5,364 meters) and involves navigating glacial moraines and rocky terrain.

The Intro and Outro music today was supplied by Rob himself on the guitar singing a Rod Stewart classic.

Our next winter episode will be out on the 4th of October as we now take a break for the summer.

In the meantime, please do tell your mates about The White Out Podcast - it really helps us get bigger an dbetter.

Thanks for listening. See you soon.
