  8. Include fermentable fibers and prebiotics in your diet.
  9. Supplements with probiotics, L-glutamine, digestive enzymes, etc.
  • When it comes to parasite and candida cleansing, make sure to work with a practitioner, get the right testing, and have the right support. You need somebody who knows how to review your testing appropriately and provide the necessary protocols.

“Your gut barrier is really important, and we want to do all that we can to manage that and keep those mucosal cells really, really tight.”

“Leaky gut and bad gut flora are common because of our modern lifestyle, and if you have a leaky gut, you probably have bad gut flora and vice versa. And when your gut flora and your gut barrier are impaired, you will be inflamed.”

  • Do a 7, 14, or 21-day functional medicine detox. Then, maintain your results by trying to not be exposed to as many toxins and eating cruciferous vegetables.
  • Get blood work done. And if there’s something off on your blood work, look at the root causes to see why it’s off.
  • Do intermittent fasting.
  • Consider doing a one-day reset diet where you're doing daily nutritional support shakes every four hours.

  • One of the biggest reasons why many of us experience so much bloating is because we have issues with low stomach acid.
  • Food, water, and air are the biggest human consumption variables on a daily basis when it comes to our health. The quality of those ingredients matters to our overall outcome.
  • If you're on an elimination diet for longer than three months, you begin to create your own dysbiosis in the microbiome.
  • Taking out complex carbohydrates from your diet can create more food sensitivities, more food reactions, and less oral tolerance over time.
  • The specific carbohydrate diet is a version of a FODMAP style diet where you're not eating anything processed out of a wrapper or package. It’s a whole food diet where you're cutting out as many complex carbohydrates as you can.

Action Steps:

  • Consider going on the specific carbohydrate diet. Eliminate the foods that are giving you problems and attempt to reintroduce them as quickly as possible.
  • If you’re having an IBD flare, start with the intro diet along with the specific carbohydrate diet. This means eating all cooked meats, fruits, and vegetables and nothing raw. 
  • Support your body with all the mechanical needs it might be missing at the moment to break down foods.
  • If you want to protect your gut, eat a lot of fermented foods, say a gratitude prayer before you eat, slow down, and try to eat a wide range of foods.
  • Find a supplement that's going to cover your pancreatic enzymes, your brush border enzymes, and microbiome enzymes all in the same capsule. You also want to try to find something with minerals added to it.
  • Take enzymes with your meals and before bed. Also, don’t be afraid to experiment with your enzyme dosages.
  • If you're in a bad place, like if you’re someone who has refractory IBD or you're headed into the hospital, one of the coolest things you can do is give your gut a break by doing a 24- or 36- or 48-hour water fast.

 

Steven said:

“The hope... is that if you supplement with [HCl] long enough and you rebuild the natural processes, you reabsorb all your minerals, and you kind of train your stomach how to work, you will end up usually coming off of HCl.”

“The systemic part of enzymes can not be understated, and I think it's one of the most underrated anti-aging tools... It's really cool from an anti-aging standpoint.”

Tips to Balance Blood Sugar and Optimize Metabolic Health - Part 205 Oct 202100:23:00

Welcome to the second part of our metabolic health episode! Here you’ll learn more strategies to support your insulin and blood sugar levels, as well as take a closer look at how glucose impacts your mood, sleep, cycle, and energy.

  • A study has shown that when about one ounce of white vinegar was consumed with a carbohydrate-rich meal, post-meal glucose spikes and insulin levels were significantly lower.
  • Apple cider vinegar is not only great for digestion but also for supporting post-meal glucose.
  • According to one study, a single session of exercise at even a mild intensity has the ability to significantly increase insulin sensitivity the very next day.
  • A large body of research also shows that moderate aerobic exercise 30 minutes, three times a week over an eight-week period improves insulin resistance and glycaemic control, including your fasting glucose levels.
  • Similarly, high-intensity training improves both fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity in as short as two weeks. The more muscle mass that you can build, it's going to support how your body uptakes glucose.
  • A short stint of sleep deprivation can send the body into a pathological metabolic state. The good news is that this is reversible. All you need to do is improve your sleep duration for two days.
  • Stress raises our glucose levels. Studies have shown a significant correlation between perceived work-related stress and increased levels of circulating glucose.
  • Cinnamon is a delicious and effective way to blunt some of those glucose surges.

 

Action Steps:

  • Implement these strategies:
  • Use vinegar to support your glucose. Take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar 10 to 15 minutes before you eat your meal, or mix it with a little bit of warm water and drink it first thing in the morning.
  • Exercise and incorporate movement.
  • Prioritize sleep. You need to sleep at least 7 to 9 hours per night to have healthy and proper glucose regulation.
  • Control your stress. Practice stress management techniques such as deep diaphragmatic breathing for 20 minutes a day and twice-weekly meditation.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon on your meals.

 

Samantha said:

“If you feel like you're having a bit of this resistance with working out and exercise, that could be one way to reframe it. You're doing this because you love yourself. You're doing this because you want to support your body and you want to love your body.”

“No matter how good your diet is, sleep plays a really key role here in your overall metabolic function.”

  • We often look at pregnancy as the time when the egg is fertilized and when we get a positive pregnancy test. But there's an even earlier stage of development that's critical to a woman getting pregnant and setting the stage for that pregnancy, and that's what's happening to the egg before it's fertilized.
  • Before an egg is ovulated, there's a window of opportunity of three or four months where we can impact our likelihood of getting pregnant and how healthy that egg is.
  • New research shows that there's an increased risk of pregnancy loss with increased levels of caffeine. But it's very likely that low levels of caffeine are still okay. The guideline says to keep it under 200 mg a day, so it really depends on what you're comfortable with.
  • Your nutrient and energy needs in postpartum, especially if you're breastfeeding, are actually higher than during pregnancy.
  • What postpartum nutrient depletion basically means is that when you go through a pregnancy, for nine months, your body is going to take all the nutrients you have and preferentially give them to the baby. So oftentimes, our needs aren't met.

Action Steps:

  • Eat as many meals as you can from home and from scratch, especially vegetables.
  • Reduce, if not eliminate, your exposure to environmental toxins. Start in your kitchen with the materials that you use and your personal care products.
  • Consider lowering your caffeine intake in the first trimester when the pregnancy is most vulnerable.
  • Supplement with prenatal vitamins and choline.
  • Batch-cook meals, and make food that you can grab and eat with one hand.
  • Prep foods that would support your healing after pregnancy.

“The wild thing about the world of eating and nutrition in pregnancy is that it's full of misinformation. Most of the advice comes from a place of fear instead of facts, and we have old-school beliefs that are circulating nonstop."

“We get very caught up in what we need in pregnancy [that] we sort of forget about how important postpartum can be."

  • SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. It's not a disease in and of itself but a sign that something has gone wrong in your body. 
  • The majority of your gut bacteria is in your large intestine. Your small intestine is where you absorb your nutrients, so it isn't designed to withstand large numbers of gut bacteria. When a large number of bacteria is present there, they compete for your nutrients.
  • Research shows that the vast majority of all IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) cases are caused by SIBO.
  • Your liver is an integral part of your digestive system. When you're told "You have to heal your gut," this includes your liver too.
  • Diet is not a treatment for SIBO. Rather, it's a supplemental strategy that can help you reduce the symptoms.
  • Diets that are primarily for SIBO/IBS are incredibly restrictive. It would be ideal to find some sort of a happy medium. If you reduce your diet too much during treatment, you may risk that some of the bacteria just go into hibernation. On the other hand, you don't want to be eating things that are going to make you miserable.

 

Action Steps:

  • Improve your stomach acid by taking fresh lemon juice. Or you can dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with water and drink it 15 to 30 minutes before a meal.
  • Practice mindful eating.
  • If you're experiencing any symptoms of SIBO, get the SIBO test.
  • Supplement with digestive enzymes and vitamin D.
  • Eat like you're a pregnant person if you know that you're prone to food poisoning.
  • Space out your meals and don't snack as much.

 

Phoebe said:

“Everyone's SIBO is very different from one another, partially because everyone's microbiome is more unique than a fingerprint. That is true no matter where the bacteria are taking up residence. And it's one reason why SIBO can be complicated to treat."

"People often forget that treatment is very different from healing. And oftentimes, treatment in and of itself can cause more damage and require more healing."

This leads to hot flashes, sweating, trembling, weight loss, diarrhea, hair loss, nervousness, hyperactivity, emotional instability, irritability, insomnia, restlessness, and in some cases, bulging of the eyes.
  • Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition causing a form of hyperthyroidism. 
  • Thyroid auto-antibodies develop when a person's immune system mistakenly targets and attacks the thyroid gland. This can lead to chronic inflammation, tissue damage, and autoimmune disorders.
  • The toxins that affect the thyroid include the following:
  1. Phthalates - typically found in plastics and some personal care items
  2. Perchlorate - found in food and water
  3. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) - found in breastmilk, electronics, cars, and buildings
  4. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) - found in non-stick pans, water-resistant coatings, stain-resistant carpets, and microwave popcorn bags
  5. Organophosphate pesticides - found in agricultural spaces that end up affecting the produce that we eat

 

Action Steps:

  • Get diagnostic testing for your thyroid health.
  • Use glass instead of plastic containers for packing your meals.
  • Read the labels of personal care products and look into product ratings.
  • Avoid using non-stick pans and be conscious about wearing water-resistant clothes and accessories.
  • Buy fruits and vegetables that are treated with the least amount of pesticides.
  • Detoxify.

 

Samantha said:

“Your thyroid is governing the metabolism overall in your body. Weight is a part of that, but it's not the only piece... Metabolism means more than just weight gain and weight loss."

"Sometimes your antibodies are just going to go up and down for no real apparent reason. You can't just pinpoint one thing that's going to trigger [it]."

  • Think of your evenings as a time to reconnect with yourself. Have fun!
  • Consider getting cupping treatment if you have tight muscles.
  • Get circulation moving through play and fluid movement.

Action Steps:

  • At the end of the day, do something that’s not stimulating and allow your mind to truly relax. Nothing does that better than being in nature. So leave your phone for a while and go for a walk.
  • Supplement with ashwagandha (2 to 5 grams before going to bed).
  • Take medicinal mushrooms.
  • Supplement with a vitamin B complex.
  • Practice grounding.
  • Practice qigong.
  • Do the Legs Up the Wall Yoga pose.

“There are tools, and there are things outside of the mainstream paradigm that can definitely support us. And often, it’s the only way that we actually get to the root of what’s really going on.”

  • Ask yourself great questions (i.e. Who are you living for? If you can do anything, what would you do?)
  • Double down on self-care and self-love, and trust that you are getting to the place where you want to go.
  • Understand what you stand for so that you can stand for something.
  • Create healthy boundaries in your relationships.
  • Commit to your truth and learn to speak it to the world.
  • Define what authentic living means to you.
  • Do something outside of your thinking head, i.e. journaling, meditating, hiking, etc., to get your intuition flowing.
  • Let go of the things that are no longer serving you.

“You wear a mask when you show up in your life outside of who you truly are. And how far out of alignment that is, is the degree to which you are burning yourself out.”

“When you ask questions, you open the portal to your own answers. It’s that reconnecting and understanding that you do have so much more information and connection to your truth inside of you.”

  • Low estrogen can affect so many areas that are near and dear to a woman’s heart like sleep, sex, fertility, appetite, and weight.
  • The lower your estrogen is, the hungrier you might become. 

 

Action Steps:

  • Get hormone testing.
  • Support your bone density by lifting weights and eating calcium-rich foods.
  • Supplement with vitamin E to reduce hot flashes.
  • Try acupuncture.
  • Consider going on a gluten-free diet.
  • Be conscious of your caffeine intake.
  • Cut back on alcohol, or eliminate it altogether.
  • Add flax seeds to your diet.
  • Have sex and orgasm more.
  • Supplement with magnesium.
  • Don’t exercise too much.
  • Take herbs such as maca, red ginseng, hops, and valerian.

  • Test your vitamin D levels to determine how much of it you need to supplement.
  • Have a healthy sleep routine and go to bed no later than 11 p.m.
  • Get support when you’re having trouble with sleep.
  • Supplement and eat the right kind of fats. And be conscious about avoiding the inflammatory oils.

“If you’re struggling with sleep, it’s so important to figure out why… because without sleep, your body can’t heal; you’re going to have a ton of issues with hormones and balancing hormones.”

 

“Especially as we age and hormone levels change, and different things come up in our life and stressors, there’s always going to be things that impact our health and our hormones. So it’s always essential to come back to the foundational elements.”

  • Get on a good nutritional program.
  • Implement these everyday strategies to avoid getting a parasitic infection:
  • Have your pets tested and make sure you give them filtered water.
  • Rinse and soak your vegetables in vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Consume lots of garlic.

  • Make the Morning Adrenal Cocktail:

 

The key when making this drink is to make sure you have all three components- vitamin C + salt + potassium. If your trace minerals does not contain potassium, make sure to add in coconut water or find an electrolyte powder or trace mineral liquid that contains potassium.

 

OPTION #1

250-500ml of water

1 packet of ENER-C sugar free Orange 

1/2 tsp trace minerals

1/3 cup coconut water (optional - use if your trace minerals does not contain potassium)

 

OPTION #2

1/4-1/3 cup of fresh-pressed orange juice

1/2 tsp sea salt or trace minerals

1/3 cup coconut water

“Less sodium in the system means that there’s more stress in the system ultimately.”

  • Implement these strategies to optimize your gut:
  • Get food sensitivity tests.
  • Get a stool sample test.
  • Take foods and supplements that help restore the integrity of the intestinal lining.
  • If you’re dealing with mold infestation, make sure the mold is removed properly and stop the exposure.
  • Incorporate these healthy hormone hacks into your day:
  • Have a cup of green tea.
  • Fill up with fat. 
  • Make sure you get enough good quality sleep.

  • Eat “real” food.
  • Drink a lot of water.
  • Take supplements.
  • Move your body as much as you can.
  • Build boundaries with toxic people.
