Parshas Vayera: Why God Loved Avraham and Why I Plan to be a Hands-on Father07 Nov 202500:26:32

The week exploded with joy: a healthy baby boy, hospital runs, school interviews for our four-year-old, and more miles on the Parkway than we can count. In the rush, a harder truth surfaced—our Gemara seat sat empty—and that stung. So we turned to Vayera for clarity and found a verse that hit like a bell: God doesn’t single out Avraham for breaking idols, debating kings, or even building a tent of radical hospitality. The love lands here—he teaches his children and his household to keep the way of God.

That insight flips the scoreboard most of us carry in our heads. Public greatness is good; parenting is greater. We unpack how Avraham’s legacy makes the home the primary beit midrash and why brief, consistent moments with our kids—ten minutes of Torah, a Shabbat table that lives, a nightly story or song—can shape identity more deeply than any speech. We talk about brit milah as a parent’s obligation, the danger of outsourcing chinuch, and the quiet power of modeling growth where children can see it and feel it. When kids trust that love guides our choices, they’ll walk beside us even on steep paths.

You’ll hear practical ways to turn family life into lasting learning: questions at dinner that spark wonder, small rituals that stack into memory, check-ins that teach integrity as clearly as halacha. Work matters. Learning matters. But raising a child in God’s ways is where love and duty meet, and that conviction can redeem a week that might look “unproductive” on paper. If God loved Avraham for being a father first, we can reorder our homes—and our calendars—to follow suit. If this conversation speaks to you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review with one family ritual you’ll start tonight.

Parshas Noach: Noach Against The Tide24 Oct 202500:25:03

A world soaked in deceit, a flood that resets history, a tower that scrapes the sky—all before Abraham even arrives. We walk straight into the heart of those early chapters and uncover a surprising throughline: resistance is the engine of spiritual growth. Noah’s quiet defiance in a corrupt age becomes a template, not for perfection, but for courage under pressure. And when God warns Cain that “sin crouches at the door,” the final word is not fear—it’s possibility: “you can master it.”

I share a story about a student ditching class to watch soccer and why that simple game unlocked a deeper truth. Victory only matters when there are defenders on the field. The Yetzer Hara—the inner pull toward shortcuts and self—earns its “very good” not because harm is good, but because opposition turns choice into achievement. Without friction, there’s no faith. Without a goalie, there’s no goal worth cheering.

Across this conversation, we reframe failure, distraction, and delay as training grounds. Prayer counts most when your mind won’t settle. Study grows when fatigue whispers quit. Integrity shines when no one is watching. Instead of waiting for perfect conditions, we build small, sturdy habits that hold under stress and treat setbacks as practice, not verdicts. You’ll leave with a mindset you can use today: find the doorway where you often fall, plant your feet, and take one honest step forward—even when you don’t feel like it.

If this message helps you see your struggle with fresh eyes, tap follow, share it with a friend who needs encouragement, and leave a quick review so others can find the show. What defender are you facing this week?

Parshas Devarim - Tisha B’Av: Bring Along Your Golf Clubs, Stroller, and Gemara01 Aug 202500:36:45

What caused the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash? The Talmud provides a surprising, direct answer from God Himself that continues to challenge us today.

The connection between Parshas Devarim and Tisha B'Av is no coincidence. Both center on honest reflection about past mistakes rather than glossing over uncomfortable truths. Moshe's rebuke in Devarim exemplifies true Mussar – looking back at previous actions with clarity to understand where we went wrong. Similarly, Tisha B'Av isn't merely about mourning something we've never personally witnessed, but about examining the causative factors that led to destruction.

The Talmud in Tractate Nedarim tells us something remarkable: when asked why the Temple was destroyed, neither the sages nor the prophets could determine the reason. Only God Himself provided the answer: "They forsook my Torah." But how exactly? The explanation given is cryptic yet profound – "they did not bless the Torah first." This doesn't mean they abandoned Torah study completely; rather, they failed to prioritize it as their highest concern. While externally Judaism appeared to function properly with mitzvos being performed, Torah had taken a secondary position in their hearts.

To heal this relationship, we must reconsider how we approach Torah study. The Ramban advises not just learning Torah but implementing its wisdom immediately: "When you rise from your book, search in what you have studied to see if there is something you can now fulfill." Our relationship with sacred texts should mirror our most cherished relationships – treating them with care, keeping them organized, and ensuring they're never neglected. The way we pack for trips reveals our priorities; do our sefarim get packed first, or are they afterthoughts?

Ultimately, there is no meaningful Jewish identity apart from Torah. It constitutes our entire relationship with God and provides the framework through which we understand our purpose. By recommitting to blessing Torah first – making it our primary concern in both study and action – we take a crucial step toward rebuilding what was lost. How will you prioritize Torah in your life today?

Parshas Mattos-Masei: Greetings from Koh!25 Jul 202500:25:54

The fog of uncertainty isn't a weakness in our religious experience—it's the proving ground of our most profound faith.

Moses spoke to the tribal leaders with a unique clarity of prophecy, using the phrase "Zeh hadavar" (this is precisely what God said). But as Rashi teaches us, this perfect clarity was reserved only for Moshe. All other prophets received divine messages with some ambiguity, expressed as "Koh amar Hashem" (thus says the Lord). This distinction reveals a profound spiritual truth that transforms our understanding of faith itself.

Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, the Ponevich Rav, found strength in this teaching after losing his family in the Holocaust. He pointed to Abraham's binding of Isaac as the ultimate example of faith, not because Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son, but because he proceeded despite overwhelming confusion. Nothing made sense. How could God promise Abraham descendants through Isaac, then command him to sacrifice that very son? Yet Abraham's response was, "Neilcha ad koh" (let us go to koh). This "koh" represents not just a physical place but a spiritual state of uncertainty where faith thrives without understanding.

While we often celebrate stories where everything "works out" and makes sense in retrospect, the highest level of faith is found in continuing to trust God when Nothing seems to add up. When faced with inexplicable suffering—children dying young, righteous people suffering, evil seemingly triumphant—we don't need to torture ourselves seeking explanations. True spiritual maturity means acknowledging the limits of our understanding while maintaining unshakable trust. Perhaps this is what God meant when promising Abraham "Koh yihyeh zarecha" (so shall your offspring be)—that his descendants would inherit not just numbers matching the stars, but this profound capacity for faith amid uncertainty. Embrace the holy haze, walk toward "koh," and discover the most profound connection with the divine precisely where understanding ends.

Parshas Vaeschanan: Following the Straight Path28 Jul 202300:15:24

Ever wondered how ancient Jewish works of literature can guide our choices in this modern world? With an exploration of the Mishnias Gemara, the Mishni Brewer, and the Shulchan Aroch, we provide a fresh perspective on how these seminal texts continue to shape our lives as Jews. Drawing from these works, we delve into the importance of 'hayashar hatov' - acting uprightly and doing what's right, even when the Torah doesn't provide a definitive answer. We delve into specific examples that encapsulate this principle, showing how it's more than just following rules, it's about acting 'above the letter of the law' and being a mensch.

Then, we turn our attention to the challenging concept of 'chuva', the process of returning to the path of righteousness and goodness. In the face of countless laws and amendments, the idea of deciphering what is permissible and what's not can seem daunting. Yet, these teachings serve as a guiding light, bringing comfort and clarity during times of uncertainty. Join us as we unpack the question of what is 'the asesah ha'ayashar ve'atoyv Be'en e'ashem' - the straight and good path in the eyes of God. This episode promises a thought-provoking discussion that will leave you with a new perspective on how to navigate the complexities of life with the wisdom of our Jewish teachings.

Matos-Masei - Weekly Parsha: BEIS MEDRASH OF WALL STREET11 Jul 202300:03:53

Can you imagine that every dollar you earn and every transaction you make is a profound topic of Jewish law, a 'sugya'? Picture a life where the boundary between the secular and the sacred is blurred, where your work is not a diversion from Torah but an integral part. Our guest, Rabbi Elephant, illuminates this concept, using the example of war spoils from Parseh's Matos. He challenges us to see that the division of these spoils was not a mundane task but a sacred act akin to earning a livelihood.

Rabbi Elephant takes us back to the wisdom of European Jews who wore the same Jewish cap in the office or the base Medrish, symbolizing that every aspect of their life was 'helig' or holy. He suggests that this might be what the mission meant when it said that all Torah that does not have 'Melacha' or work with it would eventually be nullified. In this illuminating conversation, Rabbi Elephant prompts us to consider our livelihood as a form of worship, a sugya that enriches our understanding of Torah and Jewish life. Tune in to this profound discussion and experience a paradigm shift in how you perceive your work and life.

During our intimate reflection, we delve into the tragedies and the sins that led to such devastation. Parshas Pinchas: What Your Rabbi Isn't Telling You About Reality18 Jul 202500:27:07

What if the Torah isn't just a set of divine rules, but the actual software that runs our universe? Rabbi Aaron Lopiansky's revolutionary 8-minute discourse from 5779 (2018-2019) offers a perspective that transforms our understanding of reality itself.

Starting with a famous dispute between Talmudic sages Rava and Abaye about prohibited actions, Rabbi Lopiansky reveals a profound truth: when the Torah forbids something, it's not merely establishing a moral boundary—it's defining the parameters of reality itself. Just as computer hardware functions according to its programming, our physical world operates according to the spiritual principles embedded within it. God consulted Torah before creation, designing trees because blessings needed to exist, and parents because honoring them needed to be possible.

This insight changes everything about how we view transgression. When we violate Torah principles, we're not just breaking rules—we're attempting to operate outside the architecture of creation. It's like a player in Candyland moving their piece off the board entirely; such a player isn't advancing in the game but has removed themselves from it completely. Similarly, those who seek success through dishonest means aren't finding clever loopholes—they're stepping outside the fundamental structure that governs lasting achievement.

The story of Tzlafchad's daughters exemplifies this principle perfectly. These women didn't merely demand land rights; they presented a coherent halachic argument that worked within the framework of Torah's reality. God affirmed their claim not by changing rules but by acknowledging their correct navigation of spiritual truth.

This teaching resonates through every aspect of life, particularly in business ethics. Any gain achieved by violating Torah principles cannot endure because it lacks foundation in authentic reality. As Rabbi Lopiansky notes, "The roosters eventually come home to roost." What seems like getting ahead through cutting corners is exiting the game entirely.

Next time you face ethical decisions, remember: the spiritual realm isn't less real than the physical—it's the most authentic level of reality. When we align our choices with Torah, we're not just being obedient; we're harmonizing with the deepest structures of creation itself.

Behaaloscha – (Unfiltered) Sadistic Pride09 Jun 202300:15:34

Have you ever considered how far people will go to escape obligations, even when it comes to serving God? In this eye-opening episode, we unpack Rashi's insight that the complaint in the Parshah of Baaloscha wasn't a complaint but more of an excuse to cause chaos and upheaval. We discuss fascinating stories like the blood libel and the fire in Kelm, demonstrating how individuals can wield a complaint to fulfill their desires, often without even realizing it.

But what drives us to seek these excuses? We dive deep into our subconscious motives and how they can lead us to act in ways that don't align with our true intentions. For instance, we examine a movement promoting acceptance of perverse cultures under the guise of peace, love, and happiness, while in reality, it's a plot to cover up sin. Join us as we discuss valuable insights on better understanding our actions and motives, ensuring we pursue good things with genuinely good intentions.

Parshas Behar-Bechukosai 2023 | The Most Famous Rashi In The Torah12 May 202300:21:06

In this week's episode of The Weekly Parsha, we discuss the well-known analysis of Rashi in his first comment on Parshas Bechukosai. Often a misconstrued, fuzzy topic, we seek to clarify and illustrate this critical mitzvah of "Ameilus BaTorah!"

In this week's Parsha:

Behar

  •   Laws about resting land and crops every 7 and 50 years
  •   God permits the use of enslaved people with stipulations
  •   Obligation to eventually free servants

Bechukotai:

  •   God promises rain to feed crops if commandments followed
  •   Long punishments were described if Israelites did not follow laws

Parshas Balak: Do You Know What Color Your Friend's Kitchen Cabinets Are?11 Jul 202500:30:16

What inspires an enemy to offer praise? Bilaam, the infamous non-Jewish prophet whose prophetic abilities rivaled those of Moshe, was hired to curse the Jewish people. Yet, instead of curses, he delivered words so powerful that they became part of our daily prayers: “How goodly are your tents, O Jacob.”

As he gazed upon the Israelite encampment, Bilaam observed something extraordinary—something that speaks to us profoundly even today. The entrances to the Jewish homes were intentionally misaligned, ensuring they did not face one another. This subtle architectural detail reflected profound wisdom about safeguarding privacy, dignity, and sanctity within each household. By design, every family’s inner world was protected, creating sacred spaces where spirituality could flourish free from outside intrusion.

In today’s hyper-connected world, where boundaries are increasingly blurred and privacy is eroded, this lesson is more relevant than ever. A true Jewish home isn’t defined merely by religious symbols adorning its walls. It’s a sanctuary—a fortress of faith that shields its inhabitants from harmful influences while nurturing internal spiritual growth. It’s the place where Torah learning is a daily rhythm, where children witness their parents’ commitment to spirituality, and where the air resonates with uplifting Jewish music rather than negative distractions. Most importantly, it’s where we carefully filter what enters through our doorways—both physical and digital—creating an environment where our families can thrive spiritually and emotionally.

Our sages teach that when we strengthen the “bars of our gates”—the protective boundaries of our homes—we bring blessings to our children within. This isn’t mystical thinking; it’s practical wisdom. A home infused with kedusha (holiness) becomes fertile ground for growth. By dedicating spaces for prayer, setting boundaries around technology, and realigning our priorities to focus on what truly matters, we build homes that can inspire the same awe that Bilaam felt when he exclaimed, “How goodly are your dwellings, O Israel!”

HaGaon HaRav Meir Hershkowitz ZT”L02 May 202300:04:08

Baruch Dayan Ha'Emes: The Stamford Rosh Yeshiva, HaRav Meir Hershkowitz, has returned his soul to his Maker. We mourn the loss of a Torah giant who devoted his life to studying and teaching the Torah. His legacy lives on through the thousands of Talmidim he has taught around the globe and the generations of Torah he has Meyased. May his memory be a blessing.

As his funeral and levaya take place, we are reminded of his immense impact on the Jewish community. He co-founded Yeshiva Bais Binyomin in Stamford, Connecticut, alongside Rav Simcha Schustal, zt" l, and was the Rosh Yeshiva for many years.

Rav Hershkowitz was not just a Rosh Yeshiva but a beloved father and father-in-law. He was the father of Mrs. and father-in-law of Rabbi Ezra Neuberger, an inspiration to many.

Acharei Mos/Kedoshim | How to Change A Bad Habit, Cure Anxiety, and Learn For 18 Hours A Day27 Apr 202300:21:31

Parshas Acharei Mos and Kedoshim are two of the most well-known Torah portions in the Jewish tradition, mainly due to their focus on sacrifice and atonement. The portion begins with God instructing Moses regarding the ritual of Yom Kippur, which requires the High Priest to enter the inner sanctum of the Tabernacle and make atonement for himself, his family, and all of Israel.

The central theme of this portion is teshuva (repentance). It offers guidance on how to repent and achieve forgiveness from God. This message is further reinforced by various mitzvos that are introduced during this Parsha - such as: not eating blood or any other offerings made to idols; abstaining from incest and adultery; avoiding specific prohibitions of Shabbas, such as the lighting of a fire; and observing the laws related to kosher food.

In addition, Parshas Acharei Mos emphasizes the importance of charity and hospitality towards others. For example, it discusses how we should help those in need and assist strangers looking for a place to stay or a meal. This section also details specific regulations regarding handling animal remains after slaughtering – an act of kindness demonstrating our respect for all living creatures.

Parshas Shemini | You Have Been Chosen14 Apr 202300:19:02

In this week's Torah Podcast: Shemini, which is the Torah reading of the week and third in the Book of Leviticus. Parshas Shemini tells of the consecration of the Tabernacle, the deaths of Nadab and Abihu, and the dietary laws of kashrut (כַּשְׁרוּת‎). In this week's Torah podcast, we focus on an idea from Rav Shlomo Wolbe z"l about Moshe Rabbeinus's response to his brother when Aharon was hesitant to assume the leadership role of Kohen Gadol. This teaches us to recognize false humility and take leadership positions when needed. Plus, we explore a fascinating explanation of  Ramban about Aharon's first experience inside the Mishkan. In this fundamental Torah lesson from the Mashgiach, we are taught where our service of Hashem begins and the words that should come to mind when we are hesitant to take the leap of faith.

Summary:
First, we summarize Parshas Shemini. Then we explain Rav Wolbe's Insight on the Parsha. Lastly, we finish with actionable advice and a new mindset on a misunderstood character trait.

First Date Seder05 Apr 202300:04:46

Making the Pesach Seder fun and interactive is integral to connecting with our Jewish heritage and passing on traditions to future generations. The seder plate, which traditionally contains a roasted shank bone, matzah, maror (bitter herbs), charoses (a mixture of fruit and nuts), karpas (a vegetable, usually onion or parsley), and salt water, can be used to create exciting activities for the whole family! One fun activity that can be done with the seder plate is a "quest"—have each person at the table take turns finding an item on the seder plate. Whoever finds it first will get to tell everyone what it means and why we use it during the seder. You can also ask participants to act out a scene from the Passover story, with each person assigned a different role as they tell the story of our Exodus from Egypt. In addition to involving everyone in activities, you can make your seder more interactive by creating a "storyboard" around the outside of the table. Place pictures and symbols that remind us of our heritage and its traditions so that while eating and drinking at the table, you can still remember why we celebrate this memorable holiday. Finally, spicing up your Pesach Seder doesn't have to stop at activities—you can add a touch of fun by incorporating food into the festivities! Some ideas for creative dishes include matzah lasagna, potato kugel, macaroons, and more. Not only will these traditional dishes taste great, but they will also keep everyone engaged as we remember the story of our deliverance from Egypt. Making the Pesach Seder fun and interactive doesn't have to be complicated. With a few simple ideas and some creativity, you can create memories that last well beyond this holiday season—and remind us of why we celebrate it in the first place!

Parshas Tzav | Ashes of Glory30 Mar 202300:09:55

In this week's Torah Podcast: The Jewish mitzvah (commandment) of Terumas Hadeshen is a ritual that involves taking a small portion of ashes from atop the altar each day and setting them aside. Terumas Hadeshen teaches us about continuity, and setting aside part of the ash from the previous day reminds us that while our service may change, it originates in yesterday's work. Through this mitzvah, we understand that even as time passes, something tangible remains to connect us to the past and guide us into the future. The Hotza'as Hadeshen also reminds us not to rest on our laurels and fall into complacency due to previous accomplishments. We must strive for excellence each day regardless of what has been accomplished in days prior and approach our service of Hasehm with passion and enthusiasm.

Summary:
• Each day in the Mikdash, the Kohen's service began with the mitzvah of Terumas Hadeshen, by which a kohen separated and placed ash next to the altar.
• This mitzvah was not part of regular housekeeping as it required a kohen and was done ceremoniously.
• It served to remind those coming to serve Hashem that in service of Hashem, they need not reinvent the wheel.
• The mitzvah of Terumas Hadeshen taught continuity and building on the past, while Hotza'as Hadeshen taught the need to approach each day with new purpose and vigor.

Parshas Vayikra | Attention22 Mar 202300:15:27

In this week's Torah podcast, we explore a fascinating Midrash that
describes Moshe not entering into the Mishkan until he was called.
This teaches us an essential lesson about knowledge and focus - having
both before beginning any task. By taking the time to understand and
contemplate what lies ahead in our lives, we can ensure tremendous
success when achieving our goals. Parshas Vayikra encourages us to
step back and reflect on our actions before starting something new.
When beginning something significant, such as taking on a large
project or creating something from scratch, being mindful of what is
involved in making that endeavor successful is vital. To be effective,
we must have proper knowledge and focus. This Midrash teaches us an
important lesson about being prepared before taking on any task - to
ensure we are giving it our best shot. We can live a more productive
and focused life by understanding the importance of knowledge and
focus, as taught in Parsha Vayikra. With a conscious effort towards
self-improvement, success is within reach! Tune into this week's

Parshas Vayakhel-Pekudei | G.O.A.T Mentality16 Mar 202300:16:08

In this episode of The Torah Podcast:
Without prior knowledge of weaving, sewing, or constructing, how could the Jewish people build the Mishkan? The Ramban's answer in parshas Vayakhel is genuinely inspiring. He explains that under the guidance of Hashem, a few individuals could find within themselves the strength and determination to succeed despite the seemingly impossible task set before them. The lesson here is timeless – it takes grit and determination to build great things and achieve goals that appear spiritually unachievable. This same concept applies today when we look at those who have made successful companies or written critical commentary on Torah texts. It all comes down to drive, grit, and strong faith in oneself - knowing that with Hashem's help, anything can be achieved. With this mindset firmly rooted in our souls, there is no limit to what we can accomplish. It is this same drive and determination that the individuals in parshas Vayakhel had, which we can all emulate today. By believing in ourselves and investing our time, energy, and effort into whatever God asks of us, we can achieve great things - no matter how impossible they may seem. We must take one step at a time towards our goal with faith and confidence, knowing Hashem will provide us with the necessary resources for success.  Nothing stops us from making the impossible possible – just as those who built the Mishkan did!

Highlights:
-Tap into your inner strength and determination to achieve great things
-Believe in yourself and Hashem, and you can accomplish anything
-Find the grit to push forward even when the task ahead seems impossible
-Be inspired by those who have achieved greatness against all odds

Parshas Korach: The Sad Bald Egg27 Jun 202500:29:49

What drives a distinguished leader to rebel against divine authority? In Parshat Korach, we discover a fascinating psychological insight that resonates powerfully in modern life.

Korach wasn't merely challenging leadership—he was struggling with a profound identity crisis. After being ritually shaved "bald as an egg" and rendered temporarily unrecognizable, this esteemed Levi felt stripped of his significance. The Medrash reveals his lament to his wife: "No one recognizes me anymore." Rather than seeing his transformation as elevation into greater holiness, Korach interpreted it as diminishment, triggering a rebellion that would ultimately destroy him.

This narrative unveils a challenge many of us face today. Within our beautifully functioning religious systems—our yeshivas, seminaries, and standardized pathways of Jewish life—we risk becoming just another person in the crowd, "floating through" without feeling remarkable. The painful thought lurks: "If I weren't here, would anyone notice? Does my contribution even matter?"

The antidote lies in creating meaningful impact. Whether teaching someone weaker than yourself, showing up at simchas when it's difficult, or taking on community responsibilities, these actions combat the Korach syndrome. As one Rosh Yeshiva wisely advised: guaranteed but mundane work where you're easily replaceable will "quickly rot" your spirit, while work that challenges your unique abilities nourishes your sense of purpose.

Are you making yourself known to your community leaders? Are your children experiencing opportunities to give, not just receive? Does your Shabbos table function as a mini-Shabbaton where everyone feels valued? Parshas Tetzaveh | Parshas Zachor01 Mar 202300:14:48

This week, the parsha has two portions – parshas Tetzaveh and parshas Zachor. Parshas Tetzaveh discusses the ritual and construction of the Tabernacle and, more specifically, the Cohen Gadol's clothing, while parshat Zachor focuses on remembering Amalek. This nation opposed G-d's will. In this short Dvar Torah, we explore why Amalek is so bad. The Haftorah then recounts the story of Shaul Hamelech, who was instructed to battle against Amalek but failed in his mission when he spared a part of their nation. His mistake was ultimately deemed an act of rebellion, given that G-d had clearly stated they must be eliminated. Finally, we explore the message of determination to eradicate evil. Amalek represents real sinister motives and hatred of holiness, embodying Haman's essence in the Purim story. Let me know your thought on this vort. Good Shabbos!
