Memories that belong to another age tear through them, emotions bleed from one into the other, and the mysterious name Nevitari suddenly carries terrifying significance. Santia delivers the truth neither is prepared to accept: Ahstra has returned, the Hexars are hunting them, and Areus and Belvara possess an ancient secret powerful enough to change the course of the coming war. But recognition does not bring trust. Their connection is volatile, intrusive and almost impossible to control, leaving both struggling to separate their own emotions from those of the other. And while they wrestle with a bond neither understands, the danger outside is closing rapidly. A security transporter approaches the estate. Senator Diokles returns. Areus and Santia are forced into hiding only metres away, and Belvara is unknowingly carried toward Thyoni while the enemy's hunt for her intensifies.
