| Friction: Adding Value By Making People Work For It: Best Selling Author Soon Yu | 15 Jul 2022 | 00:35:42 | |
Welcome to The Voice of Retail. I'm your host Michael LeBlanc. This podcast is brought to you in conjunction with Retail Council of Canada. According to Soon Yu in his new book "Friction: Adding Value By Making People Work For It", the idea of friction as a uniformly bad thing that needs to be rooted out is too simple, two dimensional. Soon has poured a lifetime of experience with major brands, consulting and start-ups into a very thought provoking work helping us understand that in many instances a bit of friction, a few speed bumps, are a good thing and can actually help build customer engagement and loyalty. https://amzn.to/3yxkFlq http://www.soonyu.com/ Thanks for tuning into this special episode of The Voice of Retail. From the natural resources industry to beauty, she is helping Deciem be the change agent and joins us on day one on the Driving the Sustainability Opportunity panel.

LeBlanc & Company & Maven Media, and if you’re looking for more content, or want to chat follow me on LinkedIn, or visit my website meleblanc.co! Have a safe week everyone! About Jackie Jacquelyn started her career in Sustainability, Social Impact, and DE&I over 14 years ago, after gaining a degree from the University of Toronto in Environmental Resource Management, a degree Jacquelyn chose to explore after studying the environmental aspect of International Relations. Inspired by her surroundings – living by the old Imperial Oil office building in Toronto – Jacquelyn was driven to make an impact in an industry that arguably needed it most, and began managing large-scale oil projects. This path could have been deemed ‘untraditional’ for someone in Environmental Studies where many would opt for non-profit, for Kankam the company was right, the impact would be greater. Starting out as a project coordinator, working alongside teams detailing the optimum environmental impact of various oil sands projects, named Environmental Impact assessments, she set out to make the meaningful change the industry so desperately needed. Driven for not only a curiosity of the environment but a yearning to do better for a lasting planet, Kankam set her sights on real estate, addressing ecological and social issues, whilst building future-proofing strategies in commercial and residential builds. As Jacquelyn continued to set out on a mission to do better within many industries she changed focus to aviation joining Air Canada, to manage environmental sustainability. Here Jacquelyn looked into ways to engage customers and industry on aviation’s sustainable journey while focusing on many topics including plastic and reporting. Growing a team of emerging professionals and mentoring the younger generation on preserving our future, Jackie saw a huge opportunity to create a powerful and good impact within an industry ready to overhaul preconceptions of its sustainability practices. That brings us to today, where Jackie holds the position of Director, Sustainability and Social Impact at DECIEM. Jackie leads the overarching company initiatives towards doing good to our people, planet, and animals. Kankam’s role develops, communicates, and executes the sustainability strategy across internal departments and external stakeholders, collaborating on all facets of the business and needs. She is passionate about diversity and inclusion, mental health and mentors young emerging professionals. In addition, Jacquelyn co-chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy alongside the VP of People. Together they set out to be an impactful voice and counsel, on behalf of the whole DECIEM family. Pushing to create a workplace environment idolised and considered by other companies around the world to do even better. Their work has been recognised by industry leaders, winning The Best Ethical Initiative for the Community and Family Funds, as well as the voting and protesting days available to the DECIEM family in the Marie Claire Sustainability Awards 2021.

Welcome to The Voice of Retail. I'm your host Michael LeBlanc. This podcast is brought to you in conjunction with Retail Council of Canada. Canadian retailer Joydrop was just named 2022 Independent Retail Ambassador of the Year by Retail Council of Canada. Shashi Behl, Joydrop's CEO and founder, is my special guest for this episode. As an entrepreneur with a passion for jewelry, sharing creator stories and advocating for women in business, Shashi has a history of partnering with other women leaders in business. About Shashi The Joydrop journey begins with one woman’s quest to share other women’s stories. Shashi Behl has always adored jewelry, but was also fascinated by the creators behind the scenes. She is inspired by the passion that goes into every piece - pieces which are part of a much bigger, beautiful puzzle.
For Shashi, life and business are about simple pleasures. Good margaritas. Really good friends. An epic mountain hike when the clouds are just right. Lime popsicles. Her husbands’ belly laugh. Her son's deadpan humour. And a gift that makes a friend gush. It’s that easy. They are simple things that mean everything.
A passionate entrepreneur and strong advocate for women in business, Shashi has founded and partnered with various women lead businesses before opening the doors of Joydrop.
When she’s not sourcing the world for the best products and stories, Shashi enjoys travelling with her family, road biking, practicing yoga, reading and hearing about other peoples’ stories.

Welcome to The Voice of Retail. I'm your host Michael LeBlanc. This podcast is brought to you in conjunction with Retail Council of Canada. In this special episode, I am thrilled to be sharing an excerpt from my The Food Professor podcast with Dr. Sylvain Charlebois. Our very special guest for this episode is Richard Scofield, Président et Chef de la direction at Groupe St-Hubert. We start by asking Richard to assess the health of the brand today versus his ambition for the business -is he at where he wants to be as a team and leadership and in the minds of consumers.
Next, Lots of chicken is found in restaurants, but St-Hubert stands above the rest. If we think of serving a good chicken as table stakes from a strategy point of view in a chicken restaurant, what differentiators does the business have /does he pursue that contribute to their success. Then we talk risks to the company, franchisee governance, and products coming to a grocery shelf near you!

| The 2022 Gustavson Brand Trust Index and What It Reveals About the Post-COVID era with Saul Klein, Dean, University of Victoria Business School | 02 May 2022 | 00:30:23 | |
Welcome to The Voice of Retail. I'm your host Michael LeBlanc. This podcast is brought to you in conjunction with Retail Council of Canada. The COVID era has brought with it many changes in consumer behaviour - and plenty of questions amongst retailers as to what patterns will stick.
We are all also trying to understand how consumers view brands in the modern, post-COVID (ish) era and how broader political, social trends and economics impact brand respect, regard and recognition.
My guest on this episode to help answer some of these questions is Dr. Saul Klein, Dean of the University of Victoria Gustavson business school.
Saul takes us through the eighth annual 2022 Gustavson Brand Trust Index in a fascinating interview that merges research and decades of thoughtful analysis.
The index reveals that Canadian consumers are more distrusting of dominant technology brands than ever before, and reveals the top performers in the Canadian retail landscape and what powerful attributes drive categories of retail and retail brands to the top of the list. You can review the results of the index here. . Thanks for tuning into this special episode of The Voice of Retail. As Crocs celebrates its 20th anniversary we dig into the remarkable growth story behind the increasingly iconic footwear company. We address head-on the polarizing (or is it fundamentally under-estimated?) nature of the brand and how Michelle has turned that to advantage. We also learn about the personalizing power of jibbitz and how product extensions and geographic expansion are fueling their growth. We also delve deep into the diverse, increasingly digitally-driven, go-to-market strategy that is putting the company on a path to hit $5 billion in sales by 2026. Lastly we get Michelle's perspective on how to balance purpose and profits.
About Michelle Michelle Poole became President, Crocs, Inc. in September 2020 and has oversight of the Americas, Asia and EMEA regional commercial teams, as well as Product Design and Management, Merchandising, and Marketing teams. In addition to her product and merchandising responsibilities, Ms. Poole assumed responsibility for our Marketing function in 2017. Ms. Poole has more than 28 years of experience and proven success in the development of leading global fashion and lifestyle brands including Sperry Top-Sider, Timberland, Kangol, Converse, MTV Europe and Pepe Jeans where she held a range of marketing, merchandising & product management roles.
