146. Leading a Team Integration19 Dec 202400:13:50

146. Leading a Team Integration

So today's episode is about bringing a team together and integrating them in a way that they're successful. Sometimes this happens when you are the leader taking over a team and bringing a new team underneath you as well. You might be a new leader who's joining an organization and is inheriting a team that you haven't had before. There are all kinds of different scenarios that this can happen. When a new team begins to work together, it can take time to be productive and effective. So if you can do this successfully, they become more productive more quickly. They create a stronger bond together, and they actually are excited about the things that you're going to do together.

In this episode:

  • Integrating a team with intention can make a difference in the success of the team.
  • What are the team members thinking about during this kind of change?
  • What does a leader need to know with a change like this?
  • Look at leveraging more senior members on the team to support you as the new leader.
  • Help people get to know you as a leader professionally and personally.
  • Create a bonding experience for the team members to take advantage of through a Q&A activity.
  • Ensure that you answer the questions that the team has for you in the best way that you can.
  • Provide as much transparency as you can so they feel comfortable and build trust with you.

137. Embrace Your Imperfections17 Oct 202400:19:41

137. Embrace Your Imperfections

Today’s episode is focused on how to embrace your imperfections. We have all grown up with programming and messages from our families, teachers, media, society, culture, etc. that tell us what we are “supposed” to do in our lives. Some of these messages may include: get good grades, go to a good school, get a good job, get married, have children, save for retirement, follow the rules, don't talk back, respect your elders, etc. You get the gist of the messages that we have all heard and internalized over many years. These messages, also known as stories, may instill some sort of ideal picture into your head that you have to be perfect and act in a perfect way. Why would someone strive to be perfect? Usually, it is viewed as a way to gain the approval of others.

In this episode:

  • Brene Brown’s views on perfectionism.
  • My own experience of trying to be all things to all people, but myself.
  • Are you seeking too much external validation?
  • Choosing imperfection and being unique instead.
  • Common misconceptions of perfectionism.
  • Looking at failure in a positive way instead of only looking at a negative you want to avoid.

46. Visibility for Introverts19 Jan 202300:19:14

46. Visibility for Introverts

This episode is for the introverts out there in companies who want visibility, but don’t know how to get it for themselves. Introverts see the extroverts out in the world who love to speak up and enjoy the limelight and wonder how they can compete with that?

In this episode:

  • When did extroverts and introverts first become types that were identified?
  • My belief was that the world is made up of extroverts and they are the ones who are successful. I used to wonder if "I could be a successful leader, even though I am an introvert?”
  • Assumptions that introverted leaders aren’t as strong as extroverted leaders. But introverts are stronger listeners, more empathetic and introspective.  They may not the loudest one in the room, but they can still get their point across when they do speak.
  • Ways that introverts can be successful are reviewed and how they can complement extroverts.
  • Client case study on how she was impacted by being an introvert and what she learned.
  • Networking steps for introverts that help you be confident and ideas on how to do it.

44. Design Your 2023 Plan05 Jan 202300:21:09

44. Design Your 2023 Plan

Welcome to 2023!! Hope you had a Happy New Year!

Today’s episode is focused on 2023 and creating a plan that supports your career, your life and your visibility.

In this episode:

  • I referred to Episode 43 - Create Your Vision of Success with Nathalie Pincham where she talked about the importance of doing the inner work to achieve the success that you want in your life.
  • The importance of reflection when creating a plan like this. The plan should incorporate your values, priorities with a focus on your career and your life.
  • The first part of the plan is looking at your career, your values and priorities. Are they aligned? If not what needs to change?
  • Each and every day you have a choice to make on what you do with your time using an analogy of money. Unfortunately, many people spend their time on low value things because it's more in their comfort zone and it's easier. But it isn't actually moving their goals and plans forward.
  • Now Let's look at your life. Do you have dreams that you haven't focused on or things that you want to do in your life that you keep putting off? I share a story of a client who wants to create a life that has more freedom in it for traveling and spending time with family.
  • We only have so much time to live our lives. What you are doing each day that is helping you get to where you want to go. Is there anything that needs to change?
  • Shared my experience of designing a created life and some examples of what that could look like for you.

In this episode:

  • 86% of employees and executives blame the lack of effective collaboration and communication as the leading causes for errors in the workplace. A review of the top reasons communication doesn’t happen in the workplace.

41. Communicating with Impact15 Dec 202200:21:52

41. Communicating with Impact

Today’s episode is focused on communication. Think about your own communication and maybe where it’s working well for you and where it isn’t. You can open up communication and maintain a more neutral way of dealing with negativity or stress by first understanding how to handle it. It’s important to note that not everything will be solved with one conversation. Not everything is going to work for you. Through practice and time, you can achieve better results and be a stronger leader by rewiring your brain.

In this episode:

  • Take a break
  • The story I am telling myself is…
  • Assuming the best of others
  • Be Curious
  • Agreements vs. Expectations

37. Mastering Difficult Conversations17 Nov 202200:16:04

37. Mastering Difficult Conversations

Today’s episode is focused on mastering difficult conversations.

Although it is difficult to have these conversations, it is part of your role, and you are doing what is right for your team and the company. Your team is seeing the lack of performance just as much as you are. Your management is watching to ensure that you are going to handle the issue. Have the courage to hold people accountable, but also remember to have compassion for the person going through it.

Most of the time the anticipation of having the conversation is way worse than the actual conversation itself. Just like sitting in traffic, you just need to have the patience to wait, plan out your conversation, go forward and make it happen. The only way to get through difficult conversations is not going around it but going through it. You will be able to both move forward and reach a great outcome. The art of having difficult conversations should always be about creating a win-win situation for all involved. Even if it’s not the outcome you originally planned for.

In this episode:

  • Is there an art to having difficult conversations?
  • How do you prepare for a difficult conversation?
    • What are all the things that you need to say?
    • How can you say it to help them receive it in the best way?
    • What objections will they have that you can address proactively?
    • What questions can you ask to better understand the situation?
    • What do you think you may be assuming that could be wrong?
    • Do you understand really why they're struggling?
    • What if you assume that they are doing their best, but something is holding them back?
    • Is there something going on in their personal life? Do they need more support from you or additional?
  • Why do some people avoid conflict while others seem to thrive on it? Does it have to do with their personality style, and/or confidence level?
  • What if the person's in the wrong job for them based on their style and strengths?
  • What would you do if someone stated in front of a room of people that you and or your team didn't do what was expected on something?

36. Trusting Yourself10 Nov 202200:17:51

36. Trusting Yourself

Today’s episode is focused on self-trust. The trust that you have (or don’t have yet) in yourself and why it is important. When you don’t trust yourself, you look around for others to give you validation. What do they think about vs what do you think about. It comes from a lack of confidence in what you know and can do. It signals that you think others know more than you, that they may make better decisions and that you have put them on a pedestal. You care more about them and their thoughts than your own, which makes it hard to trust yourself and your decisions.

In this episode:

  • Why do people care what others think anyway?
  • Examples of choices that people make simply to make others happy – even if it doesn’t make them happy.
  • What are the choices that you have made in your life?
  • “What people think about you is not important, what you think of yourself means everything.”
  • Do you have the courage to stand up for something that you believe in…even if no one else does? Can you say what others will not and be the one to do what is right?
  • Do you trust your gut when making decisions vs needing external validation and approval?
  • Do you accept a no or view it as a not yet?
  • Are you willing to stand up for members of your team and defend them when necessary?
  • “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how much they seldom do.”
  • Track your decisions in a decision journal so you can see how many times that you are right!
