| Episode 211 : Nikki Pickle (Frankie & The Witch Fingers) | 11 Oct 2024 | 01:15:42 | |
Working in graphic design for the internal communications department of Guitar Center, letting it ride, and building around the seed. Nikki Pickle (Frankie & The Witch Fingers, Death Valley Girls)
"Frankie and the Witch Fingers have marked their triumphant return with “Bonehead,” their first new offering since last year’s landmark LP Data Doom. The thundering, fuzzy rocker begins with a formidable opening groove that quickly drops into a distorted, double-time cacophony of harmonizing guitars and blistering drums…. Over the past decade Frankie and the Witch Fingers have operated as an outright force of nature, offering up a revelatory form of psych-rock that hits on both a primal and ecstatically mind-bending level. In the making of their new album Data Doom, the Los Angeles-based four-piece forged a sublimely galvanizing sound informed by their love of Afrobeat and proto-punk—a potent vessel for their frenetic meditations on technological change run rampant, encroaching fascism, and corrosive systems of power. Animated by the explosive energy they’ve brought to the stage in sharing bills with such eclectic acts as Ty Segall and ZZ Top, the result is a major leap forward for one of the most adventurous and forward-thinking bands working today." | Episode 210 : Wyatt Blair #4 | 04 Oct 2024 | 01:14:11
Part time investigation, DP Del, and session traditions. Wyatt Blair (Wyatt Blair, Active Decay, Lolipop Records)
"Los Angeles’ Wyatt Blair can’t stop. A physical manifestation of inertia, Blair has been a musical object in motion since his father taught him to play the drums at 13 years old. In the years since, he’s spent his time playing in numerous bands, producing bands albums, releasing four self-produced solo albums, and founding the LA-based record label Lolipop Records, through which he helped break a new wave of young garage rockers out of their neighborhoods and into the world. His previous releases garnered praise from Pitchfork, The FADER, Spin, Uproxx & more, and led to support slots alongside acts like The Growlers, Broncho, Screaming Females, Peach Kelli Pop, Cosmonauts and more. Now, after a tumultuous year and relocating from Los Angeles to Flagstaff & back again, Blair is taking some time to help himself the only way he knows how: Channeling his struggles into massive arena rock/power-pop songs on his new EP For The First Time." | Episode 201: Jimmy James (True Loves, Parlor Greens) | 02 Aug 2024 | 01:17:37
Cheap tuner pegs, digging deeper, and the return of the sausage breakfast sandwiches. Jimmy James (True Loves, Parlor Greens)
"You could say that Parlor Greens are greater than the sum of their parts…however, the individual parts are simply stellar on their own. Tim Carman (GA-20) on drums, Jimmy James (True Loves, formerly Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio) on guitar, and Adam Scone (Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) on organ. Scone is perhaps the most tasteful living organist on planet Earth (and beyond) and to watch him play is to truly watch a master at work. He bends the organ to his will like a true mastercraftsman. He’s a veteran of the soul revival scene, having played on many Daptone recording sessions since their inception, but also has learned from some of the legends of soul jazz: Melvin Sparks and The Turbanator himself Dr. Lonnie Smith. Jimmy James needs no introduction to many as he’s been seen all over the world performing with instrumental groups The True Loves and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. Perhaps the most dangerous right hand in all of soul music, his signature funky approach can be identified by even the most novice of music fans, a feat most musicians could only dream of. Tim Carman. The backbone. The pocket. Having cut his teeth touring the world with blues group GA-20, Carman’s expertise in the world of blues shuffles might make him an unlikely candidate to lay the foundation for the funky Parlor Greens, but this debut LP shows otherwise. Steady, heavy pockets and as funky as they come." Excerpt from https://www.parlorgreens.com

| Episode 111: Seth Applebaum (Ghost Funk Orchestra ) | 28 Oct 2022 | 00:54:26 | |
Creative outputs, Putting music together through trial and error, and a necessary departure. Seth Applebaum (Ghost Funk Orchestra)
“Ghost Funk Orchestra is the brainchild of composer/multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. What started as a one-man recording project has now evolved into a 10-piece powerhouse live band. It’s a sonic kaleidoscope that defies genre specification, but draws heavy influence from the worlds of soul, psych rock, salsa, and beyond. Their unique blend of genres has attracted praise from the likes of Bandcamp, KUTX, Brooklyn Vegan, Earmilk, and more. Local NY blog Post-Trash described their sound as a ‘psych odyssey of traditional sounds delivered in a non-traditional fashion.’ Bandcamp’s Editorial Director J. Edward Keyes praised the band’s ability to ‘leave no funk-adjacent genre unexplored.’ Now, coming off of their highly regarded 2019 release ‘A Song For Paul,’ GFO is hard at work preparing their follow-up LP, to be released in fall 2020 on Karma Chief.” Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/ghost-funk-orchestra

Tinkering in the late hours, changing what you’re doing on a subconscious level, and Red Bull. Charles Prest (Noon Garden, Flamingods)
"Noon Garden is an exotic psych-pop odyssey, drawing on worldly sounds from the likes of Francis Bebey and Dur Dur Band to Shintaro Sakamoto, tearing up the sonic rule book and conjuring up a distant land where you find yourself cutting loose to grooves that meander their way through a wide spectrum of African Disco, Funk, Exotica and Psychedelia." | Episode 107: Lael Neale | 03 Oct 2022 | 01:01:12
Declamation day, moving a week after graduating college, and Conveying feelings without words. Lael Neale
"It is the simple thing that is so hard to do. This is the paradox that musician Lael Neale has lived within throughout her development as an artist. It is the reason she became enthralled with poetry. Poems are a distillation. Lael says, “this challenge to winnow away what is unessential is the most maddening and, ultimately, rewarding part of writing a song.” Lael’s new album Acquainted with Night is a testament to this poetic devotion. Stripped of any extraneous word or sound, the songs are lit by Lael’s crystalline voice which lays on a lush bed of Omnichord. The collection touches on themes that have been thread into her work for years: isolation, mortality, yearning, and reaching ever toward the transcendent experience." | Episode 104: Ed Moreno (The High Curbs) | 03 Oct 2022 | 00:58:14
Getting new goals, stolen equipment, and being on janitorial duty at a house show. Ed Moreno (The High Curbs)
"who the fuck are the high curbs?"
"Southern California based rock band The High Curbs formed in the spring of 2013 in Chino, CA. The band is led by frontman & songwriter Ed Moreno, guitarist Alberto Alvarenga, contributor & drummer of the band Aaron Korbe, and newly joined bassist Kenny Huerta. With earlier releases consisting of chaotic raw garage rock tunes and lyrics about pizza, girls, and skateboarding. The band now, continues its journey with a more sophisticated sound and words about the bitter truth of getting older. Listening to The High Curbs’ catalog is similar to watching a coming of age movie, and every new release is a different chapter in the story."

| Episode 103: Cameron Kinghorn (King Pari) | 03 Oct 2022 | 01:45:18 | |
Knowing everyone’s name, being farm to turntable, and trusting whatever comes. Cameron Kinghorn (King Pari and Nooky Jones)
King Pari is an almost accidental project. Cameron Kinghorn (Nooky Jones) and Joe Paris Christensen (PHO) didn’t even set out to start a band. When Joe texted Cameron some jams whipped up on his tape machine, Cameron hit him back with “what is this? I want in”. Ten minutes before they first linked up, Joe built the loop for their first single, ‘Sunshine,’ which they then wrote on the spot in a flurry on collective inspiration. The rest of their forthcoming ‘MARY EP’ grew from recording sessions in Joe’s Northeast Minneapolis bedroom, a guest house in New Orleans and a cabin in rural Wisconsin. Minneapolis left an obvious mark — the influence of Prince and the Minneapolis Sound, approached from a fresh psychedelic angle. It’s been called stonersoul, lo-fi R&B, dub meets 80’s electro with a heavy dose of funk. Except from https://www.kingparimusic.com

"The Red Pears are an indie/alternative band from El Monte, CA. The band consists of Henry Vargas on guitar and vocals, Jose Corona on drums, and their good friend Patrick Juarez helping on bass. The group started in the summer of 2014, when Jose and Henry got together with talks of forming another band having known each since high school and playing in different groups, separately and together. | Episode 100: Jacob Rubeck #2 (Surf Curse) | 03 Oct 2022 | 02:10:29
A $300 Grateful Dead lighter, concerns about the floor breaking, and the mouse in the apartment. Jacob Rubeck (Surf Curse, Gap Girls)
"Surf Curse owes its existence to the indomitable spirit of rock and roll, or maybe it’s just the enduring power of friendship. Some would argue they’re the same thing. But they’ll remain timeless as long as kids aren’t willing to feel like outcasts in silence. In other words, forever. So it’s no surprise that Surf Curse, a band that has dedicated itself to expressing the heartbreaks and alienation and small triumphs of growing up, has managed to thrive in DIY spaces, grubby clubs and wherever teenagers and lapsed teenagers can be found online—from their humble origins on Myspace to their rise through Tumblr to Bandcamp and now the 2021 equivalent of MTV—their eight-year old song is a viral smash on TikTok." | Episode 99: Laila Hashemi (The Paranoyds) | 03 Oct 2022 | 00:47:27
Working with Obama, being a spring chicken, and a Kirkland Signature sponsorship. Laila Hashemi (The Paranoyds)
"The Paranoyds have the kind of connection people only dream of: as non-biological sisters who have known each other longer than they haven’t and speak a language that no one else can understand. With a bond that began in preschool, Laila Hashemi (keys/vocals) and Lexi Funston (guitar/vocals) were always inseparable, so when they met Staz Lindes (bass/vocals) in ninth grade, it felt like they had known her all along. After all, they were a “package deal.” In high school, they began making music together in a friend’s laundry room and their relationship just blossomed from there. When it came time to add in a drummer, David Ruiz, who joined the band in 2015, fit in like he had been there all along. It’s that special bond that has solidified their relationship as bandmates who connect seamlessly to one another’s energy on stage—and best friends. And it’s the one thing that has remained a constant throughout the past two years." Excerpt from https://www.highroadtouring.com/artists/the-paranoyds/

| Episode 93: Gabriel Villa (Chicano Batman) | 03 Oct 2022 | 00:57:49 | |
Studying drums in France, communication in life, and not getting away from the sauce. Gabriel "El Drumero" Villa (Chicano Batman)
"Chicano Batman source their high-spirited alternative synthesis from tropicália, West Coast psychedelia, and late-’60s/early-’70s soul. Made up of Eduardo Arenas (bass, guitar, vocals), Carlos Arévalo (guitars), Bardo Martinez (lead vocals, keyboards, guitar), Gabriel Villa (drums), Chicano Batman has been well-respected locally for the best part of a decade. The group has opened for Jack White, Alabama Shakes, Vampire Weekend and Portugal. The Man in recent tours and has played major festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo. After signing with ATO Records, the group released Freedom is Free in 2017, teaming up with Leon Michels to craft an ambitious sonic experience that enhances the soul and R&B elements of their sound." | Episode 90: Juan Zaballa (Tall Juan) | 03 Oct 2022 | 01:03:18
Hot deli coffee, playing a prison show, and camping in Argentina. Juan Zaballa (Tall Juan)
"Tall Juan is as tall (about 6 feet 3 inches) as he is named Juan, and in his brief career, he has lovingly commanded the art of pastiche. On his 2017 debut Olden Goldies, Juan Zaballa introduced himself in 15 short songs as a rockabilly crooner raised on the Ramones—Iggy Pop doing an Elvis bit, maybe vice versa. The Buenos Aires-born singer made his way to Far Rockaway, Queens, where he honed his goofy brand of punk alongside former roommate Mac DeMarco and songwriter Juan Wauters (from whom “tall” distinguishes Zaballa)." The Jungle room, an 18 page paper on War and Peace, and trading shirts as a valet. (Thee Oh Sees, Warm Drag, Drums & Wires)
"The two people in Warm Drag do specific things. Vashti Windish sings, the way Siouxsie sang power, the way Nico sang allure, the way Patti sang sex. Paul Quattrone makes the noise with two Akai MPC 1000 samplers. Beats that pummel or seduce, usually simultaneously, synths that soar like Morricone or pump like DAF, and gloriously twangy guitars that clang and echo like Duane Eddy spiraling down a k-hole." Getting stuck at the Vancouver-Seattle border, The revealing nature of playing with other people, and passing out flyers in Waikiki. Alex Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches, Last Lizard)
"Alex Zhang Hungtai is a man of many names. As Dirty Beaches, he released several critically acclaimed indie rock albums, mixing what Pitchfork called “grimy, dissonant love songs” with a 1950s greaser look that made fashion editors take notice.
But just as he was gaining popularity, he ditched the pomade and began making jazz-inspired music under the name Last Lizard. Recently, he released an album with a trio called Love Theme and popped up on the Showtime reboot of “Twin Peaks” as a member of the fictional band Trouble." | The Vineyard Podcast Episode 84: Breanna Barbara | 03 Oct 2022 | 00:49:42
Being inside the music, being gluten free, and having genuine fun. Breanna Barbara
"NYC-based artist Breanna Barbara’s second album ‘Nothin’ But Time’ (out November 11 on Fuzz Club) is a raw and immersive trip through the sounds of psychedelic rock and blues, anchored by her forceful vocals and unforgettable songwriting. Sporting a sound that feels classic and of-the-moment at the same time, ‘Nothin’ But Time’ sees Barbara plumb new emotional depths as she bursts through every sonic barrier put in her way. Seeking to create mind-expanding music that’s also firmly rooted in the real, ‘Nothin’ But Time’ reflects Barbara’s headlong journey into the world of psychedelic pop by way of hard-driving blues-rock, warped theramin tones and celestial synths." Sharing influences, being in the moment, and getting too experimental. Paco Casanova (Paco Casanova, Prettiest Eyes, Corimia, Nakata)
""Last year’s “Pools" having taken up a sizable chunk of our cold dark hearts, we were delighted to hear that LA post-industrial trio Prettiest Eyes have a new gang of crowd-stirrers. None too early, either; once you’ve become accustomed to their clanging synthetic orbit, it’s hard to find other tunes that truly scratch the same itch. Volume 3 bursts at the seams with chrome-dipped timbres and surprise sharp edges, alien klaxon-calls and wailing dissonance offsetting the ziplock’d grease of their insistent drum and bass grooves. Prettiest Eyes are one of the most exciting live bands going on right now, and Volume 3 catches them in fine fettle. Not getting a clear signal path, Thurston Moore having the best time, and 2:00 AM creativeness. Phil Pirrone (JJUUJJUU, Desert Daze)
"In the 13th gigennium of cosmic expansion, minerals fired from the deaths of immense astrological engines of atomic fusion have coalesced, bubbled up, been digested and excreted innumerable times by increasingly complex lifeforms, fused as spermatazoon and ovum in passionate ballets of furious congress, producing beings who in turn survived and thrived by ingesting and metabolizing these same ancient minerals in all states of complexity, from rock to infant and most likely excrement, because nobody washes their hands. Primordial explosions formed rocks that learned to speak and to write, to dance, mine phosphates, destroy, love, eat rotten fruit to get drunk and eventually refine that process into the production of churro flavored vodka (look it up, it’s real). All this thrives due to the radiation blocking fields produced by a molten core made of speakers and guitar strings. No, really. Steel wound with nickel, magnets, vibrations. It’s all the same shit. The best tap water, the house concert circuit, and an encounter with a security guard. Cassandra Jenkins
"“Nothing ever really disappears,” Cassandra Jenkins says. “It just changes shape.” Over the past few years, she’s seen relationships altered, travelled three continents, wandered through museums and parks, and recorded free-associative guided tours of her New York haunts. Her observations capture the humanity and nature around her, as well as thought patterns, memories, and attempts to be present while dealing with pain and loss. Connecting with nature, European cafe vibes, and 17th century counterpoint. Jared Mattson (Mattson 2, Jared Mattson)
"The Mattson 2’s recent output has found them (jazz twins Jared and Jonathan Mattson) evoking the lush and carefree soundscapes of Japanese city pop. Their 2018 release Vaults of Eternity: Japan was full of loving reinterpretations of songs by artists like Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and while their latest LP Paradise doesn’t indulge in sonic excess, it does capture that breezy, sun-filled vibe. It charted Billboard at #1 Contemp. Jazz, #2 Jazz, #20 Alternative and landed features in the Washington Post and Pitchfork. Amongst collabs w/ Ray Barbee, Tommy Guerrero, Farmer Dave (of Kurt Vile), and Money Mark (of Beastie Boys), they released Star Stuff in 2017 with Chaz Bear (FKA Chaz Bundick, AKA Toro Y Moi) — also #1 on Billboard contemp. jazz charts — and reinterpreted Coltrane’s legendary A Love Supreme which Ashely Kahn (author of A Love Supreme: The Creation of John Coltrane’s Classic Album, 2002) says “there is a depth of sincerity and reverence in what the Mattson’s are doing that is unquestionable.”" Excerpt from http://www.mattson2.com/about

Playing drums with a broken wrist, a working freight elevator, and not playing Bob Seger covers for a ski resort. Colin Croom (Honeyslides, Twin Peaks)
"With lyrics about a “government check getting lost in the mail,” Twin Peaks’ Side A EP is yet another record released during the pandemic that was, surprisingly, completed way back before we were sneering at pictures of our former high school classmates on social media carelessly hitting up bars. Yet the TP dudes have been laying low since the record dropped at the beginning of the month, with no word of, say, a Side B EP following the brief set of tunes. In the meantime, we checked in with multi-instrumentalist Colin Croom to get a sense of what the band would be jamming in the van if they were on the road right now. The fifteen tracks Croom compiled range from Italian and Peruvian psych rock to prog-country, reminding us of just how dull our quarantines probably are in comparison." A love affair with music, not waiting until arrival, and the immediacy of now. James Brandon Lewis
"James Brandon Lewis (b.1983) is a critically- acclaimed composer, saxophonist, and writer. He has received accolades from NPR, ASCAP Foundation,Macdowell, and The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. He has been described as “ a saxophonist who embodies and transcends tradition” by The New York Times, and a promising young talent having listened to the elders by Jazz Legend Sonny Rollins. The saxophonist has balanced a deep, gospel -informed spirituality with Free-Jazz- abandon and hard-hitting funk-meets-hip-hop underpinning - Rolling Stone Magazine. He has released several critically-acclaimed albums, most recently highly touted 2021's Jesup Wagon and tours internationally leading several ensembles, and is a member and co-founder of American Book Award winning Ensemble Heroes Are Gang Leaders. James was recently voted Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist by Downbeat magazine's 2020s International Critics poll and most recently named top Tenor Saxophonist for 2021 by Jazz Times Magazine. Almost touching the light, early morning creativeness, and a glorified band practice. Brendan Sepe (Semi Trucks, The Pesos)
"Semi Trucks, created, fronted, and curated by California bred Brendan Sepe, are a “magic school bus”-esque escapade on track to bring art pop to the top of the charts. The duality of Sepe’s teenage-esque, yet cosmopolitan song writing charms to the point of blushing all listeners—with me being no exception. You may know Sepe from his prior engagement to the band the Pesos. This led him to get his foot in the door in the dank, dark music scene of Los Angeles. Los Angeles, where dreams are chewed up and spit out. Fortunately, Sepe has no dreams. He tells me all he truly wants is to be heard by kids twenty years from now in hopes to inspire them. He’s a man of the future. Laying tile by day, and laying tile by the next morning, Sepe aches to create and has done so immensely with his debut “vs California.”The Semi Trucks are like eating your favorite American meal laced with sincerity, struggles, love, freedom and euphoria. Shifting priorities overnight, the Steely Dan phase, and consistency in quality. Bert Hoover (Hooveriii, Mock Records)
"Having originally been born as a solo drum machine project by Bert Hoover, Hooveriii (pronounced "Hoover Three") has now evolved into it's true final form - a six member band adept at creating their own brand of psychedelic space rock. And after almost a decade in, the band is set to release their sophomore album and debut for The Reverberation Appreciation Society, Water For The Frogs. Influenced by Iggy’s The Idiot, Bowie’s Berlin records, and Soft Machine, the LP sees the band creating their own version of prog rock, circa 2021." | The Vineyard Podcast Episode 72: Stephen Burns (Triptides) | 03 Oct 2022 | 00:57:49
The Europe of Europe, getting into music through getting in trouble, and making an album for a cat. Stephen Burns (Triptides, Cosmo Gold, Little Rituals)
"TRIPTIDES is a Los Angeles based psychedelic rock group led by multi-instrumentalist Glenn Brigman. It began in the summer of 2010 as a series of sun-drenched home recorded tape machine experiments. The band has since released six full length records and a number of singles and EP’s. Their music dives through realms of sonic clairvoyance complete with melted guitars, swirling farfisa organs and vocals like sunlight through the fog." | The Vineyard Podcast Episode 71: Gabriel Fernandez (Levitation Room) | 03 Oct 2022 | 01:04:57
Mixtapes, getting vibey, and set lists. Gabriel Fernandez (Levitation Room)
"'Headspace' serves as the follow-up to Levitation Room's 2016 debut, 'Ethos.' and their first record on Brooklyn's Greenway Records. The band's fuzzy guitar-driven rock n roll must have struck a chord with a society yearning for their freakbeat brand of psychedelia. Since the debut, single "Friends" has amassed over 4 million streams on Spotify and in that time the band saw their fan base increase after various shows, tours and music festivals across the US and Europe.
With their new record 'Headspace', Levitation Room displays their process of maturity in sound and songwriting, exploring new territories of influence in music and instrumentation, combining folk, jazz, raga, soul/r&b, pop and of course… psychedelia." | The Vineyard Podcast Episode 70: Tim Hellman #2 (Thee Oh Sees, Flatworms) | 03 Oct 2022 | 01:00:58
Classic Line-ups, The Bachelor, and following rhythmic patterns. Tim Hellman (Thee Oh Sees, Flatworms, Sic Alps)
"Psych-punk psychic warrior, ear worm-farmer, and possessor of many stamped passport pages John Dwyer does not let up. His group Oh Sees (aka Thee Oh Sees, OCS, The Oh Sees, etc) have transmogrified to fit many a moment - from hushed druggy folk to groovy demonic pop chants to science fictional krautrock expanse and beyond - to suit his omnivorous whims. It’s common knowledge however, that at their shows, you’re there asking for a beating. 20 years going and the shows keep getting more and more intense, as many a soupy swarm can attest. The locked-in Rincon/Quattrone drum cops propel masses of strangers to froth and lean into each other as the insistent and repetitive underpinning tumbles nimbly from Tim Hellman’s bass. Meanwhile John ricochets breathy yips and snippets of synth and all manner of guitar heroics around your brain canyons while your reptile instincts yell “move”. Brain-stem body rock meets cerebral expanses, and their now du jour prolifically feeds a labyrinthine garden of well-hewn tunes." | The Vineyard Podcast Episode 69: Lucas Fitzsimons (The CUSP) | 03 Oct 2022 | 00:57:00
Deep memory banks, green juice, and being a working lad. Lucas Fitzsimons (The CUSP, The Molochs)
"The CUSP, a change, a prophecy, a realization that what once was will soon be no more. For Los Angeles’ Lucas Fitzsimons, The CUSP is not just apropos new solo project but a new creative beginning. Disillusioned and stymied by his former band The Molochs, Fitzsimons felt chewed up and spit out by a vague but all too familiar enemy. From Primavera Sound to pushin’ popcorn at a local theatre, lost inspiration and a confused mind became good fodder for change. As Fitzsimons recalls, “It took a while to admit I didn’t want to do my old band anymore. I just didn’t wanna do it. After nearly a decade with the Molochs, I couldn’t imagine starting something new without it seeming like some sort of desperate attempt to stay afloat. It was undeniable, though, and I had, I HAVE, no choice. A little part of me had to die in order for the Cusp to be born. Whatever died made room for something new.” Fitzsimons found new inspiration in the off kilter poetry-like lyrics of Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder, The DIY philosophy of Nipsey Hussle and Tommy Wright III, the bass heavy dub productions of King Tubby and Adrian Sherwood, and the psyched out rhymes of P-Funk. “I started hearing something different in music… the Dylanesque wordiness was shoved away by bass lines, by groovy drum beats, by sparse (yet eloquent) lyrics. I found a sub bass had more to say to me than heady lyrical verses.”" Excerpt from https://thecuspofficial.bandcamp.com/track/gum-2
