| Episode 289 : Noah Symmans (The Bures Band) | 16 Oct 2026 | 00:55:21 | |
Rogue tunes, drumaoke, and steakhouse blues. Noah Symmans (The Bures Band)
"On the back of the sell-out success of their mind-blowing debut LP, Birds Nest, Western Australian folk rock group The Bures Band are back with a repress of the highly-rated 2023 album. "There have been more than a few contenders crowding for the Cosmic American crown these days, but few are hitting the sweet spot quite like this"- Raven Sings The Blues Forming in 2022, The Bures Band is made up of five friends who share a love of late ‘60s, early 1970s music: Callum Anderson (lead guitar & vocals), Stephen Bailey (guitar & vocals), Danny Miles (guitar & vocals), Noah Symmans (drums) and Tom Beech (bass). Title track ‘Birds Nest’ promises great things for the album, an Americana folk rock uplifter, featuring jangly guitars and the band’s catchy four-piece harmony. The album continues into an early-1970s aural experience of laid back, melodic and joyful songs filled with catchy choruses and impressive performance. Making its way onto many Top Albums of 2023 lists including PIlerats and Raven Sings The Blues, plus capturing attention around the world, it’s no wonder the initial first pressing sold out in less than 24 hours! The Bures Band Birds Nest is released through Love Police Records & Tapes." Excerpt from https://lovepolice.bandtshirts.com.au

| Episode 288 : Trey Flanigan (Pardoner) | 25 Sep 2026 | 00:50:22 | |
The PA job for Uber, a bicoastal release, and a boys trip with the boys. Trey Flanigan (Pardoner)
Pardoner - Target Practice (Pre-Order) - https://www.bar-none.com
"Ripping guitars, pummeling drums, and catchy-yet thoughtful lyrics. These are the tools Pardoner have used for over a decade to chisel their “slacker” tunes. On their 5th LP, Target Practice, they continue to refine their approach in search of a Heavenly Pop Hit ™. Sensing a cultural slide back into math-rock and prog, this is their most straight ahead record yet. Absent are the surprise blast beats and scene changes that were hallmarks of Came Down Different (2021) and Peace Loving People (2023). 10 concise songs, tinged with playful meanness and satire, remain. It’s hard not to be a black-pilled doomer amidst the antagonistic forces in the world. The band’s attacks on faux-intellectual high art and peers in the scene, however, are not without self-critique. “Driving across the country //Preaching bulls**t gospel” is half-sung amidst jangly guitar on the lead single “Twisted.” Target Practice is a modern, fizzier take on 80s/90s college rock. Flying Nun, Smudge, and the noisier side of Yo La Tengo are all spiritually present. Digging deeper, the single, “Don’t Slouch,” is an attempted, xanax-ified Blessed Virgins song. Before their heart-on-sleeve album closer, “Changing Mags” the band covers Nuggets adjacent The Barracudas, whose lyrics perfectly encapsulate Target Practice, “I’m not imagining this, I see the signs. We’re living in violent times.“" Excerpt from https://www.bar-none.com

A whole other journey, a busy weekend in Mexicali, and a dry marketplace. Emanuel Cazares (Cafe Canela)

Born and raised in the Coachella Valley, Cazares has been involved in a number of different musical projects varying in sound, from the chill, soft sounds of Burgundy Blues, to the soulful Latin-rock of Slipping Into Darkness. He started his music career on guitar, and all along the way, he’s taught himself drums, bass, and production techniques to further nuance his sound. His solo career delves deep into the world of instrumental retro sounds that are perfect for a sonic journey filled with psychedelic groove." Excerpt from https://open.spotify.com

| Episode 286 : Tristan Lacombe (Population II) | 11 Sep 2026 | 01:02:07 | |
Pure frequency, tasty players, and abandoning thyself. Tristan Lacombe (Population II)
"Population II is a band dedicated to its disengagement, constantly working on refining their imposing, yet unpretentious sound. A trio consisting of singer/drummer Pierre-Luc Gratton, guitarist/keyboardist Tristan Lacombeand bassist Sébastien Provençal, Population II are masters at both improvised madness and sophisticated composition, delivering heavy psychedelic rock infused with feverish funk rhythms, a hint of jazz philosophy, a burst of energy reminiscent of punk's early days, and a love of minor scales that harkens back to the roots of heavy metal. Their sources of inspiration are diverse and not limited to music: the Detroit garage rock and psychedelic funk scenes of the late 60s, the Canterbury scene of the same period, the German experimental rock of the 70s, and Miles Davis’ eclectic era collide, bound together by the swampy decor of their hometown of Pointe-Calumet and, above all, by the deep friendship and undeniable chemistry emerging from its three members. The roots of Population II go back a long way and are inextricably linked to its members’ teenage memories. After years of jamming to the point of developing a sense of telepathy, the trio began recording a handful of independent releases that soon caught the attention of the independent label Castle Face Records. Thus was born À la Ô Terre, released in 2020. They returned in 2023 with their sophomore album Électrons libres du québec, this time released on Bonsound. A little more straightforward than its predecessor, the record reflects a natural progression of the sound the trio established on their previous releases, showing a sharp sense of songcraft and the undeniable expertise of their instruments. On a creative spree, Population II struck again the following year with their EP Serpent Échelle in the spring, and a split EP with local punk act Mulch in the fall. With this prolific sequence of releases, the band laid the groundwork for Maintenant Jamais, a third full-length album on which they stir up their various formative influences with sophistication, resulting in fourteen catchy, transgressive tracks. Released in March 2025, the album was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize the same year. Although Population II has kept busy touring internationally, sometimes supporting bands such as OSEES, SLIFT, and Frankie and the Witch Fingers, and playing at festivals like Levitation and Hipnosis, their creativity remains just as strong. After teaming up with You Doo Right and Nolan Potter to release the collective, improvised effort You II avec Nolan Potter in the fall of 2025, they return this spring with Gimmicks, a new EP that predominantly features keyboards and synthesizers." | Episode 284 : Booker Stardrum (SML) | 31 Jul 2026 | 01:10:41
Tambour focus, leveling out, and the upstate of Finland. Booker Stardrum (SML, Playtime, Photay, Booker Stardrum)
"Booker Stardrum is a composer, drummer/percussionist, and producer. Stardrum has been involved with countless experimental and improvisational collaborations, pop projects, film scores, and sound design productions, and has released four solo records (’Close-up On The Outside’ in 2026, ‘Crater' in 2021, ‘Temporary etc.’ in 2018, and ‘Dance And’ in 2015). Stardrum’s music is a highly personal amalgamation of electro-acoustics, minimalism, ambient, jazz, and contemporary experimental electronic music. His compositions are sculptural, carved from the dense layering of instruments and manipulated samples, a pantonal harmonic sense, and an intuitive approach to rhythm. Stardrum’s collaborators include SML, Play Time, Lisel, Photay, Horse Lords, Wendy Eisenberg, Amirtha Kidambi, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Chris Williams, Patrick Shiroishi, Carl Stone, Lee Ranaldo, and Nels Cline. His discography includes solo and collaborative releases on independent labels such as International Anthem, We Jazz, Balmat, NNA Tapes, Northern Spy Records, Mexican Summer, Suddenly Quarterly, and Luminelle. | Episode 281 : Gus Baldwin (Gus Baldwin & The Sketch) | 29 May 2026 | 01:04:47
Contextual differences, the banana band, and a weekly reset. Gus Baldwin (Gus Baldwin & The Sketch, Gus Baldwin)
"Gus Baldwin is a 20-something singer/songwriter/ex-hippie/part-time punk hailing from Austin, TX. He splits his time constantly performing as a one man garage band, or with his band The Sketch, and as a frequent collaborator with other local acts. His music spans an array of time periods (80s power-pop, 60s psych, 70s proto-punk, 90s indie rock), and his forthcoming self-titled debut solo full length showcases the immensity of his talents in making all of those influences sound fresh and new. “Each song on the record is a different piece of me trying to figure out who I was, and how the world was changing around me,” Baldwin says. “It’s a document of my early 20s.” And, it’s a document of an artist finding his voice from within several entanglements. More on that in a moment… The debut full length by Gus Baldwin & The Sketch, titled simply The Sketch was released earlier in 2025 to much critical acclaim: Austin NPR affiliate KUTX’s Artist of The Month in March, a front cover story in Austin Chronicle and Best Punk Band nomination, as well as personal invitations to support Jack White and tour with Bass Drum of Death in Fall 2025. While The Sketch continues to tour the US (and soon the EU) and write, Gus’ solo album serves to fill in the shades and background that made him. To wit: After a stint holding down drums for Dallas surf punk legends Sealion in high school, Baldwin went on to form the psych-pop combo Acid Carousel, which he led for 6 years and 20-ish releases before departing the band on Halloween night 2021. Quickly releasing a string of solo titles on his own GetWithIt! Records imprint, including the EPs THRILLER II, and Live Bugs, as well as a slew of singles, Gus established himself firmly as the godson of Texas rock ‘n’ roll. Teaming up with former Acid Carousel bandmates, and other friends, Gus formed The Sketch in 2022 with bassist Lucas Martins, guitarist David Rawlinson, and drummer Trey Gutierrez. “At the time of writing most of these tunes, I was still in Acid Carousel and fed up with how things were going, and mostly tired of the psych bag I had been put in,” Baldwin says. The pandemic was a prolific time for him, with a personal mission to write and record a new track every other day on his 4-track recorder. “It’s interesting seeing the songs written for Carousel put on the same album with the ones written right after both my breakup with that band, and my long term relationship. It made sense to put these all together to document my personal journey from age 21 to now.” The 12-track album was recorded on a Tascam 388 8-track tape machine at the home studio of Baldwin’s friend Ramiro Verdooren over many sessions throughout 2022-2023. Roky Moon (American Sharks) recorded the final touches and mixed the album, with Joey Oaxaca mastering in Los Angeles. Gus Baldwin will be available on LP and download on October 24th, 2025 via Permanent Teeth." Excerpt from https://hi-dive.com

Doing a scan, changing the Wikipedia, living within the roster. Scout Gillett
"Tough Touch, Scout Gillett's sophomore album, emerges from years of relentless motion—a period the Missouri-born, Brooklyn-bred, and now LA-based artist describes as one of growth, vulnerability, and learning to trust her instincts. Set for release in 2026 via Slouch Records, the album explores the pain that vulnerability brings, the fragility of life, and the challenge of finding oneself within a relationship—all rendered with the gritty, glittery cosmic twang that makes Scout's sound so singular." The tower of groove, curated jams, and the spaces in between. Grant Schroff (Polyrhythmics, Champagne Bubblebath)
Polyrhythmics & Adryon de León “Got to Be for Something” Single- https://synesthesia.ffm
“Polyrhythmics sound originated in Seattle’s underground deep funk scene combining impossibly tight grooves with bold brass and hypnotic percussion that showcased elements of R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat which defined the instrumental group’s early era sound. Now on their thirteenth year as a recording project and touring ensemble, the band’s sound continues to evolve following six full length albums, several EPs and live releases. The virtuosic musicianship and musical conversation built on a relentless touring schedule of the previous decade has led them to a brand of psych-funk that fills a room with an impending mood where anything could happen - sometimes evoking their brighter and cinematic Fela-influences, but also a more sinister and darker turn toward a more progressive sonic palette.” https://www.polyrhythmics.com/about

| Episode 275 : Gabriel Fernandez #4 (Levitation Room) | 24 Apr 2026 | 01:13:10 | |
The wonders of marketing, chalantness, and everyday lighting. Gabriel Fernandez (Levitation Room)
Levitation Room - Equinox (PRE-ORDER)- https://shop.greenwayrecords.com/collections/frontpage/products/levitation-room-equinox-lp
“East Los Angeles quartet Levitation Room’s floaty, cosmic songs are always a trip. Since forming nearly a decade ago, they’ve self-produced dizzying, otherworldly music that’s connected with fellow travelers in the hallucinogenic world of outré rock music. Led by singer and guitarist Julian Porte along with founding members Gabriel Fernandez (lead guitar) and Johnathan Martin (percussion), the band has enchanted live audiences at Desert Daze and on tour with like-minded groups Post Animal and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. The band’s vivid sound has found them placed on popular playlists like Modern Psychedelia and the legendary superproducer’s Danger Mouse Jukebox. Their 2015 debut, “Friends,” has surpassed 18 million streams. Joined by new member Kevin Perez (bass) in 2021, Levitation Room have continued to expand their colorful, unearthly sound, a process that has culminated with the vibrant new album Strange Weather. Collaborating with former Brian Jonestown Massacre keyboardist Rob Campanella, Jason Kick (Mild High Club), and Black Crowes’ Joel Robinow, Levitation Room take a new step in their story and vision with Strange Weather. The record’s lyrical narratives—about love in the park, life in the city, and the fact that “The world today is such an illusion”—are appropriately steeped in ’60s sonics and a dreamy, lo-fi atmosphere. It’s spacey, celestial guitar music for escaping into, and “it feels just like heaven.”” https://shop.greenwayrecords.com

The listening hours, chilling at the Airbnb, and Beethoven’s greenroom. Tim Hill
“…Hill is based in Whittier, California, where he was born and raised, and music has always been his guiding force. The son of a music teacher, Hill grew up playing various instruments in a formal manner, but eventually carved a niche for himself in local punk bands, before finding himself as an in-demand touring musician for artists like Nick Waterhouse and the Allah-Las. When the Las—one of Los Angeles’s most beloved psych-rock bands—decided to start Calico Discos, their record label, they knew just the guy for its inaugural release: Hill’s solo debut, a 7-inch for the 2018 song “Paris, Texas,” introduced him as an alt-country act to be reckoned with—and his full-length debut, 2019’s Payador, was an underground hit, with copies of the sold-out first run having gone for as much as $100 on Discogs.” https://innovativeleisure.net

The splice loop, living across the street from the Krispy Kreme, and the $3000 shagin wagon. Wyatt Blair, Scott Montoya, Julia Kugel (Soft Palms, Lolipop Records, Julia Julia, The Growlers, Mr. Elevator & The Brain Hotel, The Coathangers.)
Scott Montoya and Wyatt Blair were two of the earliest guests on this podcast (Episode #1 and Episode #13 respectively.) Their generosity of coming on the program early on gave me the momentum to push this podcast forward. I have wanted to get them in the same room for a while now and I am so pleased to have Julia Kugel (Whom I have wanted to have on for quite some time) on with them. Please enjoy this special episode of The Vineyard Podcast. - Jacob Burnett

Happy accidents, the gear that’s always moving, and bluegrass Outkast. Jimmy James (Parlor Greens, True Lovers)
PARLOR GREENS- Emeralds [RELEASE DATE: 4/10/2026]-

"Listening to the abundant sounds of the Seattle-based funk & soul group, True Loves, is like walking down a favorite neighborhood street, slapping five with friends, checking up with clerks in their stores, and smelling the familiar scents of your most cherished locale. The band is its own block party. What began in 2014 as a jam session between three of the city’s best - drummer David McGraw, bassist Bryant Moore, and guitarist Jimmy James - has since blossomed into a global force that features percussionist Iván Galvez, trombonist Greg Kramer, and saxophonists Gordon Brown and Skerik. Together, the group’s live performances have garnered them much acclaim and millions of streams on YouTube. In 2017, True Loves recorded their debut instrumental LP, Famous Last Words, which received worldwide adulation, earning them performances at coveted music festivals. In 2018, the group released the "Dapper Derp/Kabuki" 45' on WeCoast Records followed by 2019's Colemine Records "Famous Last Words/Mary Pop Poppins" 45 single. The band released their sophomore album "Sunday Afternoon" in 2021, on Color Red Music. 2024 saw the band release their latest "Good Weed and Red Wine" followed by their second European tour. A second single, "Dopus No. 1" was released in January 2025 with a vinyl 7" release of both songs on Valentine's day." Excerpt from https://www.truelovesband.com/about

“Straight Arrows have been proudly flying the banner of Aussie garage rock for years now. The Sydney band have two solid albums under their belts and a noteworthy touring notch count that has seen them play across Australia and overseas, including tours with the likes of Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall. With such impressive credentials, it’s no surprise that they’ve caught the attention of icons like Henry Rollins, as well as bands like The Sonics, who inspired them to make music in the first place. Ahead of the upcoming Red Bull Sound Select show in Sydney, Daniel Respall caught up with singer and guitarist Owen Penglis recently at his studio in Kings Cross, discovering that the DIY punk aesthetic is still alive and well." | Episode 268 : John Andrews #3 (John Andrews & The Yawns) | 27 Feb 2026 | 01:14:36
A boxing match in the park, the third wave of twee, and the Alaska documentary. John Andrews (John Andrews & The Yawns, Cut Worms, Woods, Quilt)
(PRE-ORDER) JOHN ANDREWS & THE YAWNS - STREETSWEEPER - PARK BENCH GREEN RECYCLED VINYL- https://earthlibraries.com
“John Andrews has spent the past few years tucked away in Red Hook, Brooklyn—a neighborhood that sits just beyond the natural drift of the city. Once shaped by maritime industry and later a haven for artists in search of vast warehouse space, its history and isolation give it a quiet magnetism. Streetsweeper, the fifth album by John Andrews & The Yawns, reflects that vantage point—tranquil, self-contained, and curious about the movements most people overlook. Just a few cobblestone blocks from the freight-ship-lined harbor, Andrews wrote dozens of new songs at his electric piano. Nine of them found their way to Los Angeles to be recorded with Luke Temple, who played guitar and some bass. Drummer Noah Bond and bassist Keven Louis Lareau, both longtime members of The Yawns and Cut Worms, form the rhythm section. Will Henriksen of Florry played fiddle on “Something To Be Said,” while Emily Moales of Star Moles sang harmonies recorded remotely by Kevin Basko at Historic New Jersey. Andrews finished his overdubs back home, letting the record settle again into the landscape that first inspired it. Around that same time, he took a seasonal job in his neighborhood with the NYC Parks, maintaining the soccer fields beside the hulking, abandoned grain terminal at the river’s edge. He’d ride his bike home at lunch to record vocals, weaving the workday into the songs themselves. No matter the task, he brings a steady devotion. The whole album was tracked using the personal guitar pick of late troubadour songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker; a gift to Keven Louis Lareau by a family friend. OnStreetsweeper, Andrews leans into guitar like he hasn’t in years, still letting his relaxed, unhurried touch guide the music. “Goodbye Dirty Snow” is delicate & full of heart, yet comfortably sits next to “Friends In Misery” with its jangly trash guitars and driving rhythm section. On “Through & Through” a Santo & Johnny inspired tune, he sings in an intimate lo-fi voice: “If I were to question your greatest vice, I’d be like Bambi out on the ice.” Each lyrical vignette is filled with Andrews’ gentle empathy—he sings like someone who might’ve seen you playing fetch, kissing on a park bench, or crying on a lunch break. Andrews remains active on the DIY circuit he’s traveled for almost 20 years now, taking his solo shows on the road to backyards and unconventional spaces, projecting his signature handmade animations, which dance behind him. He sells his artwork for cheap, guided by the Bread & Puppet Theater manifesto that art should belong to everyone who wants it, and those paintings funded this album. He’s long admired Little Wings, an artist cut from the same well-worn cloth. After flipping through Kyle Field’s work at a Baby’s All Right show, he asked him to paint the cover; two shaky hockey players clad in 1980’s New Jersey Devils red and green watercolor.
Red Hook may not be the easiest neighborhood to reach with its 25 minute walk to the nearest subway station but that distance gives a reward to patience and a singular glow—one Andrews sneaks into every 33 minutes of Streetsweeper. The Super 8 video for “Something To Be Said,” shot by Hilla Eden, wanders through its streets like a hazy love letter to a town on the cusp of inevitable change. The album offers a similar invitation: step off the main road, linger a little, and appreciate the small, overlooked moments that make a place—and a life—rich. Andrews has swept those margins with care, leaving songs that listen, observe, and stay with you. - Kyle Avallone" Excerpt from https://earthlibraries.com

An alchemical stew, correcting problems, and putting it all together. Sam Cohen (Apollo Sunshine, Yellowbirds)
“Multi-instrumentalist Sam Cohen writes naturalist songs steeped in blissed out soul grooves and futurist guitar work. This former member of Apollo Sunshine and leader of Yellowbirds is no stranger to fuzzy psychedelia and enchanting melodies. They are presented here with the direct minimalism innate to solo work by John Lennon and Neil Young. | Episode 263 : Drew Auscherman (Playland) | 22 Jan 2026 | 00:55:04
Joe Dirt on VHS, cool things happening in Indiana, and coaxing a song out of something mundane. Drew Auscherman (Playland, Hoops)
“In a world of constant change, one of the few things that provides consistency in our lives is the upcoming release of another album by Drew Playland and his Playland recording project, and the increasingly likely fact that it will, in all probability, be essential listening! Playland 2 marks his fifth album of 2025 and is arguably his best to date. It showcases his penchant for eclecticism, that is so deeply rooted in originality that listeners are completely immersed in new aural discoveries with each repeated listen (…and I assure you, there will be many!). In tracks such as “Red Hot Ranch”, “Everyone in the Park Is In Love”, “Power Outage”, and “Interactions”, a sense of dulcet jangle reminiscent of Porch Kiss or Van Chamberlain is juxtaposed with the melodic, Lush-style aesthetic that is found at the most melodic end of the shoegaze spectrum. In contrast, the shoegaze influences in “Luv Like That”, “I Don’t Want To Live Here Anymore”, and “Vanity” take on a more muscular pop quality, with sounds oscillating between fuzzy Mo Troper-style power-pop modernity and the incessant energy of Motorists. When the intensity diminishes, a playful C86 vibe emerges, revealing the cult 80s jangly indie-pop style of contemporary ‘retro acts’ like Zenxith and I Wanna Be A Truck Driver. This is accompanied by a rich, fractured baritone that is perfectly unsuited to its surroundings, offering an entirely original blend of sounds. Drifting with consummate energy through both prolificity and originality without ever diminishing quality, Playland truly is a modern day act to be celebrated." Not getting rockinized, the first European tour, and happily getting duped. Jacob Rubeck (Surf Curse, Casino Hearts)
"Surf Curse owes its existence to the indomitable spirit of rock and roll, or maybe it’s just the enduring power of friendship. Some would argue they’re the same thing. But they’ll remain timeless as long as kids aren’t willing to feel like outcasts in silence. In other words, forever. So it’s no surprise that Surf Curse, a band that has dedicated itself to expressing the heartbreaks and alienation and small triumphs of growing up, has managed to thrive in DIY spaces, grubby clubs and wherever teenagers and lapsed teenagers can be found online—from their humble origins on Myspace to their rise through Tumblr to Bandcamp and now the 2021 equivalent of MTV—their eight-year old song is a viral smash on TikTok." Recorded in a tent cabin on a river in the musician’s hometown of Big Sur, California, the lo-fi aesthetic of Richard Tripps sophomore album was a deliberate choice, inspired by the analogue charm of tape, where the musician’s formative demos crossed paths with key influences like the VU and fellow Big Sur psych-folk outfit The Range of Light Wilderness." The chilliest city in the world, going back to Windows 10, and hard Italian beds. Scott Montoya (Soft Palms, Happy Sundays, Studios For Studios)
"Soft Palms, the brainchild of wife-and-husband duo Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, White Woods) and Scott Montoya (formerly of The Growlers), have announced the impending release of their self-titled debut album on July 31st via Everloving Records. The album is a feast of rich sounds and simple, comforting melodies threading together sock hop rock n’ roll, scrappy dream pop, and ethereal torch songs into a sultry, spacey, and sublime journey towards brighter horizons. The entire album gives off an aura of intimacy while also creating a broader, pastel colored world—a duality achieved through Montoya’s unique and meticulous recording process at the couple’s home studio the Centre Of Mental Arts (COMA), and the magisterial mastering job by longtime friend and collaborator Mick Boggis (Pogues, Mötorhead, 12 Monkeys, Joe Strummer, etc.) who has served as a mentor throughout Montoya’s recording career." | Episode 252 : John Myrtle | 15 Sep 2025 | 00:59:56
Conceptual "dog" sound effects, a surreal experience with Ray Davies, and a spiritual Californian yard sale. John Myrtle
"Originally hailing from Birmingham and now based in London, John Myrtle began carving his brand of slightly off-kilter, loveable bedroom pop in 2019 with demos he uploaded to SoundCloud. Having caught the ears of Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music, John was invited to play a live session, and soon his EP ‘Here’s John Myrtle’ was self-recorded to tape and released to critical acclaim from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Brooklyn Vegan, DIY and So Young Magazine. John followed this up with home-produced mini-album Myrtle Soup in 2021, which was met with equal critical praise and garnered fans from the likes of Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos, Summer Salt, The Walters and Foxygen member and producer Jonathan Rado - whom John’s 2024 single ‘How Do You Break a Heart?’ was produced by. Recently, John has embarked on several tours across Europe and the rest of the world supporting the likes of Kate Bollinger and Cut Worms, and John is set to delight and warm hearts with his most accomplished album yet this summer. ‘Irresistible’ - Marc Riley, BBC 6 Music ‘John is creating his own world of sonic magic’ - So Young Magazine ‘Pop that’s wonderfully lost in time’ - Brooklyn Vegan" Excerpt from https://open.spotify.com/artist

Breakfast cookies, a vague wish, and shifty titles. Emily Tooraen (Tchotchke)
TCHOTCHKE- PLAYIN' DUMB - 12" BLACK VINYL- https://www.hellomerch.com
"Tchotchke is Anastasia Sanchez (drums, vocals) and Eva Chambers (bass, vocals) and Emily Tooraen (guitar, vocals). As teenagers, Sanchez and Chambers both played in Los Angeles' indie-darlings Pinky Pinky and recorded for the Innovative Leisure label. Now all grown up, at the ripe old age of 22, the NYC-based trio ushers in a new era with a new band name, home turf, line-up and of course, music. The band's debut single, "Dizzy," was recorded on Long Island in Brian and Michael D'addario's (aka The Lemon Twigs) parents' basement." Excerpt from https://www.utahculturalalliance.org.

| Episode 249 : Mike Brandon (The Mystery Lights) | 29 Aug 2025 | 01:09:14 | |
An unplanned party, taking a road trip to Philadelphia with Micheal Imperioli, and playing a show with M.I.A. in Poland. Mike Brandon (The Mystery Lights)
"The roots of the Mystery Lights can be traced back to Salinas, California, where guitarists Mike Brandon and Luis "L.A." Solano formed the band while still in high school. Crafting their own distinctive take on a Nuggets-era '60s sound, they played around their home turf for several years, frequently revising their lineup and eventually releasing their debut LP, Teenage Catgirls & the Mystery Lightshow, in 2009. By 2012, Brandon and Solano had each made the leap to New York, settling in Brooklyn and recruiting new members Alex Amini on bass and Nick Pillot on drums. Further honing their mid-'60s Kinks and Easybeats-inspired sound and adding spacy psych elements, they began gigging around the city, recording a handful of EPs and singles before getting picked up by Daptone's rock imprint Wick Records in 2015. Their first release for the label was the 7" single Too Many Girls/Too Tough to Bear, followed in 2016 by a self-titled full-length LP. A second album for Wick, Too Much Tension!, was released in May 2019; by this time, Nick Pillot had left the group and Zach Butler had taken his place on drums, with Lily “Lilcifer” Rogers joining on farfisa." | Episode 248 : Chester Hansen (BADBADNOTGOOD) | 08 Aug 2025 | 00:58:17
Requirements for achieving a high level of classical piano, new ways of working, and the hypothetical hang with Paul McCartney. Chester Hansen (BADBADNOTGOOD, Fieldrow)
"Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts--A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar--have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique. On their latest full-length effort, IV (due out via Innovative Leisure on July 8th), BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before. The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender," a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grand swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love," upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth"). The result is not just BBNG's most expansive, most dynamic effort to date, but their best. Lest anyone think the group is only concerned with blurring genre lines, the title track alone is enough to ensure the most discerning jazz purists will have to respect BBNG's technical chops. IV is a master class in mood. The opening three-song suite ("And That, Too.," "Speaking Gently," and the Sam Herring-assisted "Time Moves Slow") is a slow, slinking creep, like moving uneasily through an abandoned house. And while BBNG explores different tones on subsequent tracks, that feeling--the search, the push for the unknown--is the prevailing theme. "Chompy's Paradise" is peaceful and serene, but ends on an uncertain note, unresolved. Like most great artists before them, the quartet understands that it's more important to raise questions than to answer them." Excerpt from https://innovativeleisure.net

Cocktail hour music, the intention of success, and the espresso catering business. Philip Frobos (Omni)
"The music of Atlanta trio Omni has always swung fast and hit hard. And Souvenir, their fourth album and second for Sub Pop, packs their biggest punch yet. Inactive during the majority of the pandemic–the longest downtime in their history–they approached this recording with lots of pent-up energy. Guitarist Frankie Broyles, singer/bassist Philip Frobos, and drummer Chris Yonker converted their creative fuel into sharp, driving songs that land immediately, sporting chopping riffs, staccato beats, and wiry melodies." | Episode 244 : Patton Magee (The Nude Party) | 11 Jul 2025 | 01:11:38
Cop mode, black tar CBD, and the USA Tour Help 2015 Facebook group. Patton Magee (The Nude Party, Patton Magee)
"For The Nude Party, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time, the New York-based band has released a pair of well-received albums, an EP, and played countless shows. Prior to the pandemic, the band was really starting to hit its stride. They had a system in place and were spreading their brand of melodic rock to the masses. In fact, they could count Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, and Orville Peck as vocal supporters, which led to support slots for each. Soon, incredible live appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Shaky Knees became the norm. In late 2020, The Nude Party released its sophomore album, Midnight Manor, which debuted at #1 on the Alternative New Artists Album Chart. The sextet was unable to tour behind it and compared its release to skipping a stone over a raging river. A byproduct was that it showed the band that on their third album, they couldn’t lean on their tried-and-true method of testing out new material live and then hunker down to record. Instead of sitting around, the band got busy. Setting up shop in their Upstate New York headquarters, the group used the funds they’d saved and spent a year building a studio space out of a barn. Tired of paying for studio time and being rushed, The Nude Party methodically worked at their own pace. Out were the sessions lasting a strict handful of days. In were impromptu writing moments and picking every sound as they went along. When the band met the Tampa based engineer Matthew Horner, they discovered that they had the opposite problems: Matthew had a collection of incredible gear with no studio and The Nude Party had a great new studio with no gear. So they invited him to move his equipment up to the Catskills to record an album together. Such was the origin of the band’s third album, Rides On. Unlike their first two albums, The Nude Party decided to produce Rides On themselves. With their new space and the help of Horner, The Nude Party had as much fun creating as they ever had at any other point in their career. The lack of pressure allowed them to record over 20 songs, including some that dabbled in electro-pop and stripped-down country before settling on the final 14 songs. Rides On, the band confidently says, is their best record. It’s also the most homegrown and the most organic record The Nude Party has created to date. Working on the album themselves allowed for a democratic process where each band member could take a fuller role in producing the songs they wrote. There was some initial trepidation about there being too many cooks in the kitchen. But as is the benefit of owning your own studio space, time was not a factor. In turn, it allowed for the band’s ideas to blossom, everyone’s voice be taken into account and create an exciting, collaborative vibe. The relaxed atmosphere of the sessions, and arriving with only loosely structured material, allowed the band to thrive in the studio. It also unleashed a diverse sonic texture compared to their previous releases, as best demonstrated by the title track, “Ride On.” Sonically, the song is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, but its lyrics are mini-vignettes where Magee sings about persevering through adversity. The twangy, blues-drenched licks of the title track, the breezy desert dust encapsulated by the ‘70s infused “Hard Times,” the Shaun Couture-led “Sold Out of Love,” the swinging ‘60s garage vibes of “Cherry Red Boots,” which captures the spirit of what The Nude Party are going for — and showcases their growth as a band. As does expanding the band’s sonic palate with a cover of Dr. John’s “Somebody Tryin' To Hoodoo Me.” It would have been easy to stick to the New Orleans musician’s format, but the band showed off their prowess with their own darker, electric version of the deep cut. The Nude Party coalesced and embraced the spirit of collaboration. They’re excited to begin the next chapter of their career. At a time when it would have been easy to pack it in, the band continues to persevere." Excerpt from https://www.thenudepartymusic.com/bio

"The sound of RIO KOSTA, aka Mike Del Rio & Kosta Galanopoulos, echoes much of their respective heritages – with Kosta’s Greek background further flavoured by time in the Bahamas, and Mike being inspired by his Spanish and Italian roots, his time growing up in New York, and especially revisiting his identity following the passing of his Puerto Rican grandmother. Just as their music breaks free from genre constraints, their journey crosses borders without the need for a metaphorical passport. You could visualise them lost in the moment as day drifts to night at Coachella, like spiritual cousins to Khruangbin, but you could just as equally imagine them amidst the psychedelic haze of the original Woodstock." For his latest project, Jr. enlists the synth & soul wizards of Eraserhood Sound to construct a new sonic universe. His direct, uplifting songwriting pairs perfectly with a funky as hell breakbeat, sweet soul guitar licks, backup vocals smoother than honey, and a euphoric flute solo to bring things home.
