Da Brat: Funkdafied (1994). A Platinum Plaque Fit For A Lady.
Season 6 · Episode 168
mardi 2 juillet 2024 • Duration 34:44
In our Season 6 finale, B. Cox is joined by Mac from MacTasticTV to review Chicago lady emcee Da Brat's debut album Funkdafied as it turns 30. Hailing from the west side of "The Chi", Da Brat got her chance at a deal when she won a Chicago rap contest and met the teen group Kriss Kross, who were signed to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def record label based in Atlanta. At the urging of the group, Dupri listened to her music and signed her to a deal.
The debut album, produced entirely by Dupri, is packed with funk based beats driven by heavy bass lines and punctuated by Da Brat's sharp witted rhymes and barbs on record. The short album was carried by two popular radio singles: The title track "Funkdafied" featuring Dupri and "Give It To You".
The public took to Da Brat and what she had to offer. The album went platinum making her the first solo female emcee to achieve that feat, setting the stage for the rest of the decade and other female counterparts who would follow in her footsteps. It is also the first major rap album from a rap artist from Chicago that broke into mainstream success.

Kanye West-The College Dropout: A Birth Within "The Dynasty"
Season 6 · Episode 158
lundi 5 février 2024 • Duration 55:44
In our premiere of Season 6, we welcome Van Everette from The Scenario Radio Show review Kanye West's debut classic album The College Dropout as it turns 20. After serving in the background as a producer for many of Roc-A-Fella Records best albums through the early 2000s, the Chicago-based producer took his turn as a feature act. The album was recorded over a four year period from 1999 to 2003 and is constructed during the period of many memorable moments of his life, including his near-catastrophe car accident.
For his debut effort, West produced the entire album himself and also enlisted the likes of many talented artists and musicians: Jay-Z, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Luda, Freeway, Consequence, GLC, Syleena Johnson, John Legend, Miri Ben-Ari, J. Ivy and the Boys Choir of Harlem. Mixing his unique production style that was dubbed "chipmunk soul", he impressed with his depth, wittiness and more than capable rhymes and flow as he talked the rap game, life, expectations, insecurities, injustices and more.
The album was backed by many notable singles including the debut "Through The Wire", the R&B collabo "All Falls Down" featuring Syleena Johnson, the moving "Jesus Walks" and his first #1 Billboard single "Slow Jamz" featuring Jamie Foxx and Twista. The album was certified 4x platinum and is noted as both the launching West's legendary recording career and also a iconic album of a new movement in the new millenium.

Makaveli (2Pac): The Don Killuminati-The 7 Day Theory (1996). Rap's Revolutionary Lives On In Death
Episode 85
lundi 8 novembre 2021 • Duration 35:34
B. Cox & J. Owe look back at the late Tupac Shakur's (recording under the alias Makaveli) fifth studio album and his first posthumous album The Don Killuminati-The 7 Day Theory. Released on Death Row Records not even two months after his fatal shooting in Las Vegas which shook up the entertainment industy, the album featured little features other than the Outlawz and R&B singers Danny Boy, Aaron Hall and K-Ci and Jo-Jo of Jodeci. It also featureed a less heralded group of producers from Death Row (Hurt-M-Badd, Quincy Jones III, Big D & Reggie Moore) who were tasked to keep up with the rapper's legendary work ethic and pace. The album was reportedly finished recording in only 7 days during the first week in August of 1996. Adding to the mystique and dark clouds over his death, Tupac delivers his usual hard-cutting and, at times, thought provoking lyrics as his final message to the world before departing. The album would sell over 600K albums in its first work, debut #1 on the charts and would go on to be certified quadruple platinum.

Episode 84
lundi 1 novembre 2021 • Duration 38:25
B. Cox & J. Owe review Ice Cube's classic, but controversial second album Death Certificate. After splitting with NWA and dropping his highly acclaimed debut AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, Cube followed up with a busy 1991 starting his label, kicking off the careers of fellow West Coast emcees Yo-Yo and Del The Funky Homosapien as well as making his acting debut in the cult classic film Boyz In the Hood.
He released his sophomore album with new production help from producers Sir Jinx and Boogiemen. Over 20 tracks, he continues his tales on life in the hood and the ills of the ghetto and poor black America, but also detail tough social commentary and the injustices of the day which still mirror an imperfect America in the present It's an album that is still highly regarded and is on the shortlist of many for the best 10-20 hip-hop albums of all-time.

Ghostface Killah: Ironman (1996). The Wu's Fortress Is Fortified By Iron
Episode 83
lundi 25 octobre 2021 • Duration 38:17
The crew take a look back at Wu Tang Clan crew member Ghostface Killah's debut classic album Ironman. After a four year run of excellence that started with the group's groundshifting debut Enter the 36 Chambers followed up by acclaimed solo releases by various group members, the release by the proclaimed Pretty Tone aka Tony Starks was the final solo release from a group member before the groups second album, Forever, in 1997.
Backed my soulful, but at times gritty beats, Ghostface showcases his witty yet entertaining flow packed equally with a stream of consciousness vibe and acerbic lyrical darts. He was also joined by his fellow Wu-Tang brethren, most notably by Raekwon, who would feature prominently on Ironman as Ghostface did on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. It would go on to debut at #2 on the Billboard 200 and go platinum, serving as Ghostface's best selling album to date.

A Tribe Called Quest: The Low End Theory (1991). Bass Is The Weapon...
Episode 82
lundi 27 septembre 2021 • Duration 39:58
B. Cox reviews A Tribe Called Quest's seismic second album The Low End Theory as it turns 30. Fresh of their successful debut People's Instinctive Travels And Their Paths of Rhythm, the quartet-turned-trio from Queens sought to make a deeper impact on their sophomore album. Buoyed by the presence of inventive jazz samples, stirring and sense tingling basslines, and the emergence of emcee and group member Phife Dawg, the album laid the groundwork of what many thought was possible with the fusion of jazz and hip-hop inspiring a key segment of the next generation of hip-hop artists, beatmakers and producers. Lauded and critically acclaimed upon its release, it has maintained its reputation being universally accepted as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time.

The Roots: Illadelph Halflife (1996). "Breaking Emcess Down to Fractions..."
Episode 81
lundi 20 septembre 2021 • Duration 29:53
B. Cox reviews The Roots' third studio album, 1996's Illadelph Halflife. After a respectable success and notoriety from their sophomore offering Do You Want More?!!!???!, the hip-hop band and outfit from Philadelphia found themselves moving a little bit away from their live instrumentation 100 percent output and experimented with samples and drum programming. The sound of a more traditional hip-hop album helped to popularize the group with an hardcore hip-hop audience and the emergence of Black Thought and Malik B as A Level emcees let the industry know that the "jazz guys" could stick with anyone in the game. They were assisted by a wide variety of guests; from rappers Common, Q-Tip and Bahamadia and frequent collaborator Dice Raw as well as singers such as Raphael Saadiq, D'Angelo, Cassandra Wilson and instrumentalists like jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman and former Roots crew member Scott Storch.

Jay-Z: The Blueprint (2001). A Day of Infamy, An Album Like No Other.
Episode 80
lundi 13 septembre 2021 • Duration 35:32
The crew discusses Jay-Z's sixth studio album, 2001's The Blueprint. The album was released ironically on the same day of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S., leaving it overshadowed by tragedy. After the smoke cleared (literally and figuratively), the album emerged as one of the most revered and acclaimed projects to drop in the new millennium, catapulting the Roc-A-Fella CEO and emcee into a another galaxy of success and carrying on the momentum from the end of the 90s. Backed the production prowess of the likes of Just Blaze, Kanye West, Timbaland, Bink and Eminem, Jay-Z's braggadocios and confident persona shone through with razor sharp lyrics and an impeccable flow. It combined street sensibilities with commercial appeal and also started his infamous feud with fellow rap icon Nas in a battle that would define the next half decade.
Since it's release, it has continuously been hailed among the best music releases o the new millennium and is consistently mentioned with Jay-Z best releases in his illustrious career.
