Canada’s red carpets are often treated as visibility moments, but they also expose deeper gaps in the country’s fashion infrastructure: limited public metrics, smaller entertainment budgets, fewer celebrity styling pipelines and a fashion system still shaped more by retail access than by luxury houses, showrooms or established red carpet economies.
As award shows become increasingly valuable sites for fashion image-making, retailers, rental platforms and brand-managed outfitting programs are becoming more central to how Canadian talent gets dressed. The result is a changing red carpet landscape where visibility is available, but the pathways into that visibility remain uneven.
In this episode of The Vainqueur Podcast, Vainqueur founder and editor-in-chief Danica Samuel examines the retailification of Canada’s red carpet with Angela Pastor and Julie Kalinowski, co-founders of The Fitzroy, and award-winning fashion and wardrobe stylist Amber Watkins.
The conversation begins with The Fitzroy’s role in rental dressing and its partnership with the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, looking at how rental platforms can fill an economic and styling gap for artists, actors and behind-the-scenes industry workers who may not have access to designer gifting, personal stylists or large red carpet budgets.
The episode then turns to RW&CO’s growing JUNO Awards outfitting program and what it signals about retail’s role in Canadian red carpet visibility. As brand-managed outfitting becomes more visible, the discussion asks whether retail creates needed access, risks flattening self-expression, or reveals a missing space in Canada’s styling and designer infrastructure.
In the second half, Amber Watkins reflects on the current state of styling in Canada, the loss of traditional showroom systems, the role of independent designers and why stylists remain central connectors between talent, designers and image-making opportunities.
Key Insights
Rental dressing offers a different form of retailification than single-brand outfitting, acting as a connector between talent, stylists, designers and access.
A single-brand outfitting model can create visibility and convenience, but it also raises questions about whether red carpet fashion becomes too controlled, repetitive or disconnected from self-expression.
Canada’s styling infrastructure has weakened since the loss of traditional showroom systems, making red carpet work more dependent on direct designer relationships, budgets and individual stylist labour.
